GUARD YOUR HEARTS As we enter the Christmas season and come to the end of yet another year, there is always much to celebrate and to consider. After the shepherds came to the stable to visit Jesus the Bible says that Mary pondered different things within her heart. What things? The angel Gabriel’s words. Her cousin Elizabeth’s words. The shepherds’ words. The Old Testament prophecies about the coming Messiah. The Psalmist said “your word have I hidden in my heart.” Mary kept adding to the treasure store within her heart. She held all that was happening in a precious recess. Over and over again, she unpacked it and spread it out on the table of her heart. We will never really know the thoughts which Mary reflected upon, however I’m sure that there was a sense of awe and gratitude which left her speechless to what she had observed and heard. It’s interesting that Mary pondered those things in her heart and not in her mind. Proverbs 4:23 says “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Each of us has a responsibility to be the gate keeper of our own hearts and lives. The things which we ponder on and allow into our hearts will ultimately manifest when we least expect. Every day we are all faced with choices of how we live our lives, however I would urge each of us to guard our heart’s against the fiery darts of hurt or offence. In this issue of REACH we are asking the question Who is Jesus? We trust, as you read it, you will personally gain a greater understanding of who Jesus is and also be equipped to share the Good News this Christmas. R|03

THE GIFT OF FAITH Gordon Robertson
If we believe, we will see the glory of God
R|04
BLOOM |
This Christmas season, let’s ask God for the gift of faith. That we may grasp the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe (Ephesians 1:19). We want to attain everything God has prepared for us, all for His glory. There is literally no end to the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). When we pray in faith, we hear His voice, know His will, and understand that we are in good relationship with Him. John was called the beloved disciple and enjoyed an intimate relationship with Jesus, so when he talks about prayer, we should pay close attention. He writes in his first epistle: If our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence towards God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight (1 John 3:20-22). If our hearts condemn us, we have the promise of 1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us. He goes on to say: Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him (1 John 5:14-15). John witnesses how Jesus demonstrates this principle at Lazarus’ tomb, recorded in John 11:40-44. Jesus asks Martha, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” This is a transcendent glory that has power over sin, sickness and death. It overcomes everything in
the world and answers each human need. Jesus lifts up His eyes and prays, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.” Then, because His will is so oriented to the Father’s will, He commands it: “Lazarus, come forth!” It’s a shout from His innermost being that Lazarus hears and obeys. One final key is in Revelation 12:11, where John hears a voice in heaven telling of Satan’s downfall: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” What we learn in our prayer closet becomes the word of our testimony, which overcomes with the blood of the Lamb.
“WHEN WE PRAY IN FAITH, WE HEAR HIS VOICE, KNOW HIS WILL, AND UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE IN GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM.” Now more than ever, we need the gift of faith. And when we dwell in God’s love, declare our testimony, and proclaim His will, we will see the miraculous. Scripture is taken from the NKJV. This teaching was given during a CBN staff chapel meeting.

VISIT TO CBN GERMANY
Recently we had the opportunity to visit the CBN offices in Hamburg Germany. CBN UK has helped to financially support this office for a number of years and provide oversight. During the trip, we were able to welcome to the team Andreas Pitti Heerwagen as the new Director of Operations for CBN Deutschland who will work closely with the CBN Director and Club 700 Presenter Andreas Waldmann. While we were there, we had the privilege of spending time with all the staff envisioning, sharing ideas and best practices. This proved to be a great blessing to everyone and it was great to have the opportunity to strengthen relationships between the two offices. CBN Deutschland produces their own version of The 700 Club called Club 700 which is aired on TV in Germany, Switzerland and Austria once a week. As well as Club 700 the office has a prayer line, Superbook, and social media departments. It is also reaching out with humanitarian projects particularly with refugees across the German-speaking countries. We look forward to a greater collaboration with CBN Germany and together help to bring hope and salvation to even more European nations.

TUNNEL OF SALVATION Jesus Brings Us Hope
I lived in Sarajevo, Bosnia for five years. During those years I learned many lessons but one in particular. Sarajevo is the city where the 1984 Winter Olympics were held. The world assembled amidst the picturesque landscapes of the tall white mountains that surrounded the city. None present could imagine in their wildest nightmares that only eight years later, those same mountains would become the front line of a conflict zone. In 1993 the city inhabitants dug a tunnel under the airport runway to the free territory. The tunnel was 800 metres long, 1.5 metres high and 1 metre wide. It was named The Tunnel of Salvation. A few years ago, I brought a mission team to see the tunnel and next to us was group of school children with their teacher and a tour guide. The guide asked them a question: What do you think was the most important thing that passed through the tunnel? Intrigued we moved closer and heard the answers that varied from water, medicine, electricity, weapons, food and people. Whilst all these things were correct, it still wasn’t the answer that he was looking for. Then he gave the answer and when the word came out of this mouth, it hit my heart like R|08
a sharp arrow, settling the case. The word was hope. We are in the middle of the Christmas season, and every year it seems to start earlier and earlier. The hungry commercialistic monster sweeps us away into a season defined by music, gifts, decorations and shopping. It can be a season of constant reminders of the emptiness in our hearts, houses, pockets and possibly our future. We can become focused on this and miss the reason for the season. But what is the reason? We echo the answer given to those school children in Sarajevo – its hope. We celebrate Christmas to remember that Jesus came to this earth, that the wait is over, that God intervened, that He didn’t forget, that He answered prayers and fulfilled the promises made to His people. So this year, during the Christmas season, lets focus on its real reason. It’s Jesus. It’s hope. “Totally without hope one cannot live. To live without hope is to cease to live. Hell is hopelessness. It is no accident that above the entrance to Dante’s hell is the inscription: ‘Leave behind all hope, you who enter here,’” Jurgen Moltmann, Theology of Hope.
CBN STORIES |
A BRAND NEW LIFE One morning, while making tea for her family, Jainy came across CBN India’s TV programme, Ek Nayee Zindagi, which means “A Brand New Life.” She saw a story about a girl whose family members had all passed away. “This girl, who had lost everything, didn’t give up on life. I wondered what was the reason that was driving her to move forward in life,” Jainy explained.
“THROUGH THIS SHOW, MY LIFE HAS CHANGED, MY FAMILY MEMBERSʼ LIVES HAVE CHANGED AND PEACE WAS RESTORED IN MY FAMILY.“
Jainy found out “that reason” was Jesus. She wanted to learn more about Him, but growing up in a strict Hindu family, it was forbidden to explore other religions. So for the next three months, she secretly watched the show and learned about salvation and how God forgives sins. Jainy even had some of her prayers answered. That’s when she knew it was time to make a decision. “I went to my room, locked the door, got on my knees, confessed my sins and gave my life to Jesus,” said Jainy. “After that prayer, for the first time in my life, I felt the peace of God and my heart was filled with love.” Jainy wanted her family to feel this same peace and love, so she prayed in front of them for personal problems they faced. Jainy said, “Many times, my prayers were instantly answered. So this made my parents slowly grow in the Lord. They also started watching the show. It was around that time when my younger brother started to have suicidal thoughts. So I told my parents, ‘Let’s all pray for Ajay.’ When we prayed, God touched Ajay and delivered him from all those thoughts. When my parents saw the change in Ajay, they started believing that Jesus is the one, true God and decided to dedicate their lives to Him.” Today, Jainy’s entire family is Christian.

CBN CELEBRATES 55 YEARS Impacting Nations With The Gospel
‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts. Zechariah 4:6b On the 29th October we celebrated 55 years of ministry, giving glory to the Lord for bringing us this far. When Pat Robertson and his wife Dede ventured into the unknown after God had instructed them to buy an old, defunct TV station in Virginia, they could not anticipate fully how big this God-vision really was. But at that moment, the only thing that mattered was to obey Him, and be in the centre of His will. 55 years later, here we stood, in Everyday Church, Kingston Upon Thames, to celebrate the global work R|10
of the Lord through the ministry of CBN. Together with many CBN partners and guest speakers from CBN USA, we thanked God for His faithfulness and for the ‘fruit that remains’ when we think of the millions of lives impacted through CBN’s global ministry. CBN International’s Vice President, Mr Ben Edwards, shared how CBN is making a global difference through indigenous programming and ministry follow up. He shared that our audience research in 2015 showed that CBN broadcast programming in 153 countries, reached more than 338 million viewers who watched one or more of our programmes. Our largest audiences were in India, Indonesia

and the Philippines. Did you know that CBN has production centres in 16 countries, broadcasting in 38 different languages on over 500 TV stations around the world? In 2015, CBN conducted 406 medical missions, serving over 125,000 people. Together, we dug 572 new freshwater wells, blessing over 201,000 people! Our children’s series Superbook has been aired to over 252 million viewers in over 90 countries, translated in 41 languages. Besides the TV programmes, Superbook websites and apps are making a global impact, reaching a new generation with the Gospel. More than 2,600,000 people downloaded the Superbook Bible App, resulting in 227,193 decisions for Christ through the app alone! (March 2013 – August 2016). Isn’t that fantastic? In the afternoon we heard from our CBN Regional Director Mr Jon Cassel who shared about CBN’s ministry to the French speaking nations on the continent of Africa. We also welcomed our CBN Germany director, Mr Andreas Waldmann who shared about the impact of CBN’s ministry in the German speaking world. We honoured Mr Peter Darg who retired as CBN Europe’s Regional Director, celebrating his work for CBN’s global ministry. We are so thankful to all our CBN partners who helped us to get this far – and are continuing to sow into CBN’s global ministry to impact nations for His glory.

NEW EYES, NEW WORLD Free Surgery For A Little Boy
When Zulfikar was born, his father saw white spots forming in his son’s eyes. He knew what that meant; that just like his wife Ellis, his son would go blind too. “The first time I saw my son’s eyes I was heartbroken” said 20-yearold Nurdin, Zulfikar’s father. “I couldn’t imagine what kind of future he would have.“ Over time Zulfikar’s eyes got worse. “Every time I came home, he didn’t seem to recognise me,” said Nurdin. “It made me so sad. When he walked around, he bumped into things. He often bumped into the door.” The family lives in a remote village in Indonesia where Nurdin drives a motorcycle taxi. Earning less than £2 a R|12
day, how would he be able to pay for a surgery? Then we came to visit their community. “CBN told us they would help our son,” said Nurdin with a big smile. “That was such good news for our family.” We took Zulfikar to the hospital where a surgeon replaced lenses in his eyes with new inner ocular lenses. A short time later, we went back for a visit and found the little boy happily taking in the world around him. “Now when I come home my son recognises me and calls my name,” said Nurdin. “I am so relieved. Thank you CBN for helping our son to see!”

Her kindness was rewarded when CBN’s Operation Blessing heard of their need. Because of partners like you, our staff were able to carry wall panels and roof timbers up the mountain, where a team assembled them. Little Marco exclaimed, “I cried with joy because I didn’t have a house and now I do! Thanks, Operation Blessing!”
Nat was so excited when her first daughter was born, until she saw the baby’s severe cleft palate. Her heart sank when she thought of how difficult Neth’s life would be. When the family discovered a poster in their village with information about CBN’s Life- Changing Surgeries programme, they were full of new hope. They contacted CBN and Neth received surgery, at no cost to the family!
On a mountaintop in Peru, Maria and her 9-year-old son Marco gazed at the smoldering ruins of their hand-built house. She said, “We lost Marco’s books, beds and even our clothing.” Although they were now homeless, Maria salvaged the wood scraps and donated them to a nearby soup kitchen, where she cooks meals for children who would otherwise go hungry.

WHO IS JESUS? John Bezant | Systems Support & IT Manager ‘Who is Jesus?’ must be one of the simplest yet most revealing questions that you can ask someone. In their answer, a person’s whole world view is displayed. In a few moments you can tell if they are looking at him as just an historical person or as the risen living creator God; whether he was a wise teacher with good ideas or is their own saviour, friend and brother. “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” 1 Peter 3:15-16
As this is such a powerful question, which unlocks so much about a person, why do we often find it so hard to ask? Could these simple three words be a tool you could use to start a conversation; it could be with a close family member to a complete stranger. It has no religious trappings or phrases that need to be explained, but immediately makes people produce an answer. People can talk about the positive morals and ethics of Christianity and how important love
and peace is, without much trouble. But once you mention the Name that is above every name, once the name of Jesus leaves your lips everything changes. People have to make a decision as to where they stand. Talking to people in the street I found some amazing insights into people’s ideas. Even amongst those who went on to say that they had no time for church, there was usually a belief that He existed, was a great man of R|15

his time and showed us how to live.
“ʻWHO IS JESUS?ʼ MUST BE ONE OF THE SIMPLEST YET MOST REVEALING QUESTIONS THAT YOU CAN ASK SOMEONE.” Some did say they didn’t believe in anything, but went on to say that they would “probably be struck down now for saying that”. Showing, without them realising, that they had some sort of belief in judgement and an almighty God. Although the current figures on regular church attendance are startling, down R|16
to 5% of the population in 2015, there is still a recognition of his name and an underlying knowledge and acceptance that He lived. The UK may be labelled as post Christian and a secular society but thanks to the labours of those who went before us, be encouraged, there is still a knowledge of him in the land. And people are still searching. The growth of ‘New Age’ spirituality shows they know there is more than just the stuff they see around them with their eyes. The question is of course, how we move people on from an acknowledgement of him as probably a real person, to discovering He is alive now. And we know that even a belief in Jesus is not enough. As James says “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder”(James 2:19: ESV). Few people will deny Jesus lived or was a ‘good man’, but it is a huge step, crossing the chasm of faith to a place where they will confess Him

as their Lord, their everything. Getting them to accep they desperately need to give up their own lives and follow him, trusting Him to bring them into the Father’s embrace, freed from shame and guilt, free to love, free to live life in all its fullness, that is the question we have to answer. I would be as bold as to say that you are the answer. Your life, your story could be the key that unlocks someone’s heart. Your journey could be the instrument God uses to bring another person Jesus died for, into His Kingdom. In 1 Peter 3:15 NIV scripture says “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”
“YOUR LIFE, YOUR STORY COULD BE THE KEY THAT UNLOCKS SOMEONEʼS HEART.”
Your personal experience of encountering Jesus cannot be disputed, it is real and solid. The listener has to decide, either you are telling the truth about your experience or you are insane! They did the same with Jesus himself, some followed while others scoffed, some wept as he was crucified, others rejoiced. We may not know the one who’s hearts the Holy Spirit is working on at any given time, but we do know He wants all people to be saved (1 Tim 2:4).
with a real interest in their lives and compassion for their problems.
So why not use this simple question ‘Who is Jesus?’ as a tool to open up meaningful conversations with people. Pray for guidance and timing, let the Lord put people’s names and faces into your mind, then go out and give it a try! I think like me you will be amazed at people’s responses if you go with a heart of love, not condemnation,
And if you think your own story with Jesus is not special enough, not worth listening to, that is a lie! The Angels rejoiced at your salvation. You are special, loved by God, unique and called for a purpose, and that might just mean introducing someone to your Jesus today.
We hope you will use the DVD we have produced this month as tool to help you. It is filled with people’s real life stories of how meeting Jesus has transformed their lives and relationships. Our desire is that, by asking the simplest of all questions and after sharing who Jesus is to you, you can invite them to watch how others have had incredible encounters too.

BEAR GRYLLS
Interview from CBN.com
“WITH LESS OF YOU THEREʼS MORE OF GOD.”
Bear Grylls is known around the world as an outdoor adventurer, survivalist and the star of Discovery Channel’s Man Vs Wild series. Before becoming a celebrity, he served three years with the elite British Special Air Service, or SAS, where he honed his survival skills. But most people aren’t aware of his deep love for God. Bear grew up on the Isle of Wight in England. He’s always had a close knit family and has added lots of friends along the way. In his newly released autobiography, Mud, Sweat and Tears, Bear explains how the death of a close friend brought him back to his faith. Bear and his wife Shara are the parents of three energetic boys. So when he’s done doing the dirty work of survival, he’s home. In the field, whether he’s jumping from great heights or buried up to his neck, Bear has learned the hard lessons of faith. In the book you said you weren’t really interested in the God of endless school assemblies as child. I always had a really natural faith as a kid. Where I knew God existed and it felt very free and pretty wild and natural, and it wasn’t religious. Then I went to school and suddenly it all became much more religious, and I thought, ‘Oh I don’t like this.’ It was all about church going and telling you not to smoke behind the bike shed when you are age 12. I thought, ‘if that’s God maybe I’ve got the whole deal wrong,’ and I kind of ditched my faith. R|18

What brought you back to faith? At the age of 16 I lost my Godfather who was like a second father to me. He lived with us and we were super close. It happened totally out of the blue and it was a real shock to me. I remember wanting to pray but not knowing how to, and I remember sitting up in this tree and saying a very simple prayer that said, ‘Will You be that friend to me that You were when I was like five or six and it felt natural? Amen.’ And that was actually a prayer of finding a faith. And I think for life now it’s still a continued journey of not letting too much of the religious stuff cloud the heart of faith that is very simple. It’s about being loved. It’s about being forgiven. It’s about finding home. And those are great things that all of us need. I think my faith through that journey has been an important thing. I found it hard to talk about for a long time. But I look back now and realise that it takes a proud man to say he never needs any help. I’m not that man now. And I love that great verse from The Message it says, ‘You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there’s more of God.’ In your book, you talk about your faith as your secret strength. My faith was, as you say a quiet strength, like a backbone, that’s sustained me a lot during those times when you’re at your wits end, and have nothing more to give. The journey’s been that faith has been the wildest ride. And Jesus, the heart of the Christian faith is the wildest, most
“JESUS, THE HEART OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IS THE WILDEST, MOST RADICAL GUY YOUʼD EVER COME ACROSS.”
radical guy you’d ever come across. He was always hanging around with the prostitutes and the tax collectors and having parties and banquets, and I found myself drawn to that character not the kind of fluff that we like to box as religion. I always get asked by people difficult religious questions and I just say, ‘Sometimes, I don’t know. I know I’m loved.’ And that’s the heart of Christianity. And that can be a life time journey to wade through the stuff to get to that.

When her father left, Joselyn was devastated. Her mother worked hard as a waitress, up at dawn each day, just to make enough money to survive. Most mornings, she wasn’t even able to prepare breakfast for her daughter, and 10-year-old Joselyn had to go to school hungry. But one day, in their town in Peru, Joselyn was on her way home when she was stopped by a woman who was handing out flyers for an event. The paper told her that Jesus loved her, and then invited her to a Superbook event. Joselyn decided to go, and was pleased to find so many other children there, and so much good food to eat. Together, they all watched the Superbook episode, “Roar!” Joselyn now attends the event regularly and is glad to find a place where she can always find food when she needs it, and encouragement through the Word of God. She said she now knows that even though she is small, she can “do everything with God.”

SHA RE J OY T H I S C H RIS TM A S Christmas is a season to spend time with family and enjoy great food and laughter. Sadly, there are families who won’t be able to celebrate with gifts under the tree or a warm family meal around the dinner table. At Orphan’s Promise we want to make sure that no one ever has to worry about having enough food to take care of their children. That commitment is the basis of our Something To Eat Every Day (SEED) programme, which blesses people in Ukraine. SEED teaches local villages how to grow and harvest their own food. This provides not only nutrition, but creates financial opportunities as well. This Christmas you can help families in Ukraine to have enough food for their children.
