HE GIVES US STRENGTH Why do we go through times of hardship? Can we thrive through adversity? What good can hard times bring to our lives and those around us? These are some questions that may go though our minds when we enter in to tough seasons in our lives. “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” Romans 5:3-4 (ESV). If anyone knew what tough times meant, it was the apostle Paul. I encourage you to read 2 Corinthians 11:13-33. In this letter, Paul explains how he escaped death time after time, how he was flogged, stoned and persecuted for his faith. He knew the definition of ‘hardship’ all too well. Yet, he did not boast in anything other than in his weakness so that Christ’s power would become his strength. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10. When you are going through a tough time, or you know someone who is, let us rejoice in knowing that although we are weak, His strength is in us, helping us to overcome adversity in our lives. For we know that the purpose of our hardships will produce perseverance, character, and hope. I pray that when you read this month’s magazine, hope will arise in your circumstances as you look to Jesus, who gives you strength! R|03

You look at John 9, it’s a story of a man born blind. As Jesus passed by him his disciples asked him ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” And they were getting into a theological argument, because they thought there had to be some sin for this great thing to happen to him. Was this a sin that he would commit after he was born? Or, was this a sin that his parents comited? Either way you could ask “where is the fairness here?” Why should he be judged by what his parents did? Or why should he be judge at birth for what he may do in his life? I love the answer Jesus gave:“Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.” And when you start thinking about whatever obstacles you are facing, whatever has happened to you, whatever injustice has happened to you, you start thinking this happened so the glory of God could be revealed in me. Here is a thought for you. Jesus asked us to pray and he said “pray this way, that God’s will would be done on earth as it is in heaven.” That gives us that very definite clue that God’s will has not always been done on earth, but the wonderful news is, He has empowered us to pray that His will will be done that His glory would be revealed on Earth as it is in Heaven. Now start thinking about heaven. Does anyone have a birth defect? Does anyone a oppressed? Does anybody have addiction? The answer is no. So,

that is God’s will and we are authorised to pray here on Earth. All of us go through troubles, all of us have problems and here is what the apostle Paul said about in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

“HE HAS EMPOWERED US TO PRAY THAT HIS WILL WILL BE DONE.” When you get your eyes on heaven, when you get your eyes on Jesus and start asking those questions: “how can God’s glory be revealed? How can Heaven be revealed on Earth through me? How can Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith, work through this? How can He be glorified today in me?”, and when those are the questions, wonderful things can happen. And this verse can be true for you: “I can do all things through Christ who strenghtens me.” Philippians 4:13 (NKJV).

HURRICANE MATTHEW

For the first time in more than 50 years, a category 4 hurricane hit Haiti with 145 mph gale force winds and heavy rains. It was reported that over 1000 lives were lost and more than 1.4 million people are in need of aid. The storm wiped out towns and villages off the map completely, destroying tens of thousands of homes, crops and food reserves. CBN’s Operation Blessing was on the ground handing out chlorine, needed to provide safe drinking water and prevent an outbreak of waterborne diseases like cholera as much as possible. Thanks to your generosity, we will not be caught unprepared and unarmed but ready to act and to honor not only your generosity but also the call that God has entrusted to us at this time. Together we were able to bring aid, food, clothing, blankets, medicine and chlorine to victims in Haiti’s disaster. Operation Blessing was able to produce and deliver hundreds of gallons of life-saving chlorine to ensure people have safe drinking water.

HE WILL DELIVER US Trusting In God At All Times

Have you ever seen a horse running at the Grand National and wondered why the horses are wearing blinkers? It’s to keep the horse focused on the path ahead, limiting it’s field of vision to avoid distractions. Horses without blinkers, as you can imagine, are more likely to be easily distracted, particularly dangerous in a very fast race with hurdles. It has been said that blinkers were invented by a preacher who made a bet with a friend that he could get his horse to go up the stairs of his house. The horse did this, no problem, the challenge came when attempting to get it to come back down! The preacher realised that if he covered the horse’s eyes it would be less afraid and be able to be led back down. It worked! Overcoming Adversity begins with the mind. When faced with a storm, feeling overwhelmed with something we have no idea how to navigate, we have a choice, we can choose to see it as an opportunity to trust God, prove His reality and grow in faith, or, feel anxious! King Solomon had the same insight, R|08

he says in Proverbs:Proverbs 4:25-27 (NLT): “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil”. David, Solomon’s father, did this, defeating Goliath and escaping Saul’s assassination attempt. Joseph did this when wrongfully accused and thrown into prison. These men were no more human than we are. Their response to personal, and very real adversity, was not to look at their situation but to fix their eyes and thoughts on who they knew God was, who He still is today. For this reason, Paul strongly advises us in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “Taking every thought and purpose captive to the obedience of Christ”. One of the many promises God has made to us is to rescue us from adversity but this will only happen when we consciously choose to apply His Word to our life. In Psalm 91:14, “Because he has focused his love on Me, I will deliver him. I will protect him because he knows My name”. (ISV) God wants to be your refuge, let Him, it is the safest place I know.

CBN STORIES |

MET BY MIRACLES August 2006, Lorraine drove her mother Emily to the emergency room. Lorraine says, “She was complaining a lot, the pain was strong.’ She’d never experienced anything like that before but she thought it was her heart. As hospital staff performed a cardiac cauterization test, Emily’s heart quit beating. Doctors struggled to revive her. Soon after a doctor told Lorraine the terrible news. “He sat me down and said, ‘It’s very serious; your mom has a torn aorta. There is nothing we can do for her.’ He said really ‘It’s a death sentence.’”

“HE IS A MERCIFUL GOD AND HE DOES MIRACLES TODAY, NOT JUST IN BIBLICAL TIMES. HE DOES MAJOR MIRACLES TODAY.”

Lorraine called family to join her and pray, then she spent a few minutes alone with her mom. She says, “At this point there was no hope, no hope I had been given.” Emily was transported to the university hospital. When Lorraine arrived minutes later she noticed a license plate that read Y.H.W.H. YHWH, the intimate name of God. At that moment Lorraine says she felt his presence. “The peace that passes all understanding that guarded my heart and mind kicked in and came over me and from that moment on my anxiety was gone. My hopes are eternal and my hopes are in Christ and I knew where my mom was going no matter what and I knew the LORD was with me no matter what.” Doctors ran a new test and told Lorraine their findings, ’We’ve done all the tests that we could and there is no torn aorta.’ What was clearly visible just hours ago was now healed. Lorraine says, “Anything that came out it was all God!” The next morning, Emily woke up and tried to communicate. Miraculously, she had no signs of brain damage either. Emily and Lorraine say the presence of God sustained them through the entire experience.

MELODY STAYS IN SCHOOL Girl Is Breaking Tribal Customs

In a small tribal village in Masai, Kenya, a 14-year-old girl has a dream to be a doctor. There are many odds against her: poverty, history, tradition, but she’s young enough to dream anyway. It’s a Masai tribal custom for girls her age to drop out of school and marry. Their lives become about cooking, cleaning, making the dung-mud huts, and raising children. Tradition. Melody is one of 12 children. She is the only girl left in her class at school. Her sisters both dropped out of school and are now married with one child each. Family history. Melody’s mother, Nylepo, struggles to survive. Her husband has 12 wives altogether and he has pretty much R|10

abandoned her; a single mum raising the remaining 4 children. Poverty. Nylepo graciously invited us into her home – a hut built from cow dung & mud, which she made herself. It’s quite nice inside but very small. There is a main area about 5 feet by 5 feet that serves as the kitchen, the dining room and the living room. On her shelves are a few potatoes, two green onion shoots and a small bag of cornmeal – probably the staple of their diet. There are three sleeping areas, but two of the beds also serve as seating in the main area. And of course, there is no running water or bathroom facility. Nylepo makes beautiful jewelry and her only income comes from selling it to tourists. Many come to see the

Masai people dance and they buy their beautiful beaded jewelry, but the competition is very strong as all the ladies in the village make jewelry and all flock around any potential buyers. She is very grateful for the education opportunities we are offering Melody. Melody is the first girl in her large family line to be educated! Orphan’s Promise recently built a new classroom for the children because all the kids were crowded into a tiny one-room church. They were teaching different age groups in each corner. It was chaos. The new classroom is full of little children, but only a handful of preteen and teen girls. Melody has a lot to overcome. She probably doesn’t know what it will take to become a doctor, but she has seen so much sickness and death around her that she wants to provide medical care. What a noble idea. Who gives children the vision to dream such thing? I think in Melody’s case it is her School Headmistress, Charity, who is also educated and wants the girls to do more with their lives. She believes in Melody and sometimes that’s all that it takes. Melody has a dream, and thanks to Orphan’s Promise donors, she now has the support to make it come true.

Vivinah has thrived at this children’s home.

FORCED TO SERVE

Girl Now Attends The School When Vivinah’s parents died, she was taken in by her uncle, who made her the family servant. “I was only three years old, but he made me do lots of chores, like washing the dishes and cleaning the house,” Vivinah recalls. “I got into trouble if I didn’t do it all fast enough. He didn’t take good care of me, or let me go to school.”

able to get.” Vivinah has thrived at this children’s home. She’s a very bright girl. Out of 350 students at her school, she ranks third. “I know that I have a good future ahead of me. As long as I can grow up here, I will enjoy my life,” Vivinah said. “After school, I know I can be anything I want to be.”

When people saw how Vivinah was being treated, they contacted the Love and Blessing Children’s Home. Her uncle let her go to the home, which was built entirely by Orphan’s Promise. There, Vivinah has grown up in a new home, where she isn’t the servant girl.

Before we left, we took Vivinah shopping to get some school supplies for her and the other children. You can tell that all of the kids here are happy to have a home and an extended family of 50 brothers and sisters. They have hot meals every day, and people who care about them.

“I’m really comfortable here,” says Vivinah. “I go to school and I feel good about myself. The things I never had before, like good clothes, I am now

“I thank God for you, and I pray that he will help you take care of other children like me,” Vivinah says. “Thank you!”

THROUGH YOUR SUPPORT: #America Latina CBN’s Orphan’s Promise (OP) provided more than 11,300 meals for children living in poverty across seven communities in Costa Rica. And in Peru, Orphan’s Promise provided breakfast to over 3,000 children throughout extremely impoverished districts in Lima.

#Europe Jajce is an ancient city located in the central, mountainous region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the horriffic Bosnian war (1992 - 1995) the city was heavily bombarded, reducing population to a few thousand. The people of Jajce are by no means rich as the economy is still weak and greattly depends on tourism. Recently, CBN partners helped reach out to 80 primary school children by providing much needed school supplies. We provided colourful backpacks with pencils, notebooks and other useful items that will help the children in school. We also purchased shoes for some of the most needy children in the village. Thank you CBN partners for making a difference in the lives of the children of Jajce!

Mrs. Jiamaldi’s carries heavy buckets of water for six miles every day. Her family lives in a region where clean water is scarce. It made her youngest child so sick that she had to rush him to the hospital. How she longed to have clean water someday. That day came, when caring CBN partners provided a cistern and water pipes to serve every home in the village! “You have taken all the pressures off of me,” she said gratefully. R|13

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY Richard Sanders | Prayer Centre Team Leader If by reading this title, you somehow assume this will be an ABC of how to avoid adversity in life, I would suggest you stop reading now and avoid disappointment! The truth is, adversity is very much a part of life. The word adversity describes a difficult or unpleasant situation, something that is common to all of us, whether we have faith in Christ or not. This can be expanded to mean trouble, difficulty, hardship, distress, disaster, misadventure, suffering, affliction, sorrow, tribulation, R|14

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20

hard times – I’ll stop there or else those of you who are still reading may stop as well! It is guaranteed that we all will, at some point in life, face adversity in some form or another, even those of us who are followers of Christ. The real question surrounding adversity isn’t how to avoid it, but how to face it and survive it. A better title could be Adversity - An Opportunity for Growth. One of the last things Jesus said to his disciples was this, ‘In me you may

have peace. In the world you will have tribulation (adversity). But take heart, I have overcome the world’ (John 16:33 ESV). Jesus wanted to let his disciples know that not all of the world were going to welcome the message that they would proclaim, with open arms. If you are in any doubt about that, just read the account of someone who was described as ‘being full of grace and power, doing great wonders and signs among the people’ (Acts 6:8). His name was Stephen and you can read R|15

what the world did to him in Acts 6-7.

“CHOOSE TO TURN ADVERSITY INTO A CATALYST TO PRESS INTO GOD.” It was only about 10 years after Jesus said this that James, the leader of the Jerusalem Church and Jesus’ brother, wrote his letter to Jewish Christians who were suffering persecution and living in poverty, experiencing social and spiritual conflict. He encouraged them and said “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that R|16

you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2-4). On first reading, James’ encouragement to ‘count it all joy’ could be a bitter pill to swallow. But he wasn’t saying, ‘if you have trouble, tough, just learn to live with it’, by no means, he was saying, not only can you get through this, but you will be stronger, and closer to God, despite of your adversity, if you trust Him. If you’re still not convinced, just think about your own Christian walk for a moment. Can you think of a difficult time in your life? If you are a follower of Christ, I’m sure it was a time when you prayed more and read God’s Word more too! It was most likely a time where you had to rely on and trust in the power of the Holy Spirit to see you through it. And now think of how you felt when you came through it. I expect

FEATURED |

there were feelings of joy, relief, praise and excitement, but there was also a real sense of new strength and hope that you discovered through your faith in Christ, right in the middle of your personal ‘adversity’? So, these times of adversity, if we had allowed them to, could have destroyed our faith, actually caused us to grow in our Christian walk! It is just like Paul wrote, “for those who love God, all things work together for good”, (Romans 8:28). The ‘good’ here does not talk about earthly pleasures, but it talks about the ability to be more Christ-like (v.s 29). And because of that growth, that assurance of our newly revived and proven faith, we would not only have the strength to face any future adversity, but also help us bring Godly encouragement and hope to others who are facing their own ‘trying’ times! Paul knew this for himself and is a great example to us. Paul was present when Stephen was executed for his faith. In fact, Paul was so enraged he was, “breathing threats and murder against Christians”, (Acts 9:1). That event encouraged him to be even more fervent in his endeavours to stamp out this ‘new cult’. However, because of the way in which Stephen faced his own moment of adversity, because of the grace and strength that the Holy Spirit gave him, he became a catalyst that led to Paul’s encounter with Christ and him becoming one of the pioneers of the Christian faith!

“PLACE YOURSELF INTO A POSITION TO HAVE A FRESH ENCOUNTER WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND EXPERIENCE ʻTHE PEACE OF GOD.” through some difficulty, do not merely accept it as just part of life, choose to turn it into a catalyst to press into God, and “by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving let your requests known to (Him)”, Phil 4:6, begin to expect the miraculous and the intervention of the Holy Spirit. Place yourself into a position to have a fresh encounter with the Holy Spirit and experience “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, and guards our hearts and minds in Christ” (vs.4). You have the Holy Spirit within you and you are a carrier of hope and faith, don’t wait for the adversity to overtake you, face it head on with the Holy Spirit and the assurance that “If God is for us, who (or what) can be against us? (...) In all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us”, (Romans 8:31-39).

So, the next time adversity comes knocking at your door, or indeed, if you or someone you know is going R|17

SARA HAGERTY

Interview from CBN.com

“I CAN BE HUNGRY AND FIND THE SWEETNESS OF HIM HERE.”

Today Sara Hagerty is a happy wife and mother of 5 but for years Sara suffered from multiple setbacks and disappointments. Sara and Nat married in 2001 and few years later Sara found out she couldn’t have children. In 2009 the couple decided to adopt. In her book, Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet, Sara shares how her personal setbacks, transformed her life into a hope filled journey. As much as you and Nat loved and served God for a long time, there was an emptiness inside you and sense of longing. Can you talk a bit about that? Early in our marriage we both had a passion for non-believers coming to know Jesus. Within the first month of our marriage we had both prayed a prayer saying to God that there has to be more of you than we are experiencing. We were nurturing the souls of others but on the inside we were bone dry. It is so easy for us as Christians to perform for God’s love. How did you come to a greater understanding of God’s love whilst going through financial crisis and setback? R|18

INTERVIEW |

After praying that prayer, we began to see that pain is an invitation and an opportunity. The title of my book Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet, it’s from Proverbs 27:7: “One who is full loathes honey, but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet.” When I first read that, we were in the middle of the bitterness in our lives and I was getting hardened on the inside. I read that verse and I thought this is an opportunity. I can be hungry and find the sweetness of Him here.

“HOPE IS WHAT LEAVES US VULNERABLE BEFORE HIM.”

You were doing devotions, studying the Word, doing outreach with others, but what was the element that you finally found? I think it was the intimate conversations with God. It was opening up the barest parts of my heart before Him and having Him speaking to those parts of my heart. Sometimes what we hear isn’t what we want. Sometimes the answer is no. How did you deal with that? Specifically with my infertility, it was an opportunity for me to see that God had words for me when everything else felt dark. It was a struggle to know that God is healer, he can heal and yet he wasn’t healing me. I had to keep holding onto hope, realising God is Sovereign and yet He wants me to keep asking Him. Hope is what leaves us vulnerable before Him. In the middle of that, God asked you a question, “Will you still love me if my answer is no?” That was one of the most profound moments in my life. I was sitting in church and I saw a picture of the cross

with the word ‘family’ nailed to it. I felt God say to me “If you never have a family, will you love me?”. It took me a couple of days to respond but from within my heart came this cry “You’re that good, I will still love you.” It takes so many of us to see God’s bigger picture, and that God had an answer for other children at the same time it was answering your prayer. Not in ways you expected but in a unique way. Talk about that. We always had a heart for adoption, even early in our marriage we wanted to adopt one day. We had no idea we would do it before we had biological children. But at the same time we were experiencing brokenness in our external lives, we had children who were living on the other side of the world whose lives had been shattered, and God married these two stories and show redemption. In the Superbook episode Elisha and The Syrians, Joy is embarrassed by a video of her eating that was posted online by a girl named Barbara. Joy plans to get even but before she can upload the video, Superbook takes the kids back in time to meet the prophet Elisha and teaches them that we need to show mercy and kindness to our enemies. Jesus spoke about this in Luke 6:32-36: “If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them! And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much! (...) “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid.” What makes us different to the world; showing kindness and mercy to those that love us? No! What makes us different is how we treat people who don’t like us! This is God’s way, not the world’s way. We can’t do it on our own. We need God’s Spirit to show His love and compassion to others! Our natural instinct is to treat them like they treated us. But, Jesus in Luke 6:31, instructs us to act differently. Order your copy at www.superbook.tv or call 0800 652 5095 (UK). R|21

WHAT DOES FAITH LOOK LIKE? Faith always requires an action. Sometimes that looks like handing a troubling situation over to God. Other times, it looks like making a bold move by the leading of the Holy Spirit. Whatever form it takes, faith delights the heart of God. In fact, Scripture goes so far to say that we cannot please God if we do not have faith. Faith is like a bridge that connects our present earthly circumstances to heavenly encounters and breakthrough. Trust in Him today. Take a step of faith!
