FAITH OR FEAR ‘Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,’ Ephesians 3:20 We hope for good when God promises the best. The opposite of faith is fear. Imagine a world in which car brakes only worked half the time. Driving would be terrifying. Our God is infinitely more reliable than the best car on the market, but we don’t treat Him that way. We extend our faith just beyond our own ability even though God is able to do abundantly more than we can imagine. Fear doesn’t disappear from our lives, we have to ruthlessly cut it out of our lives. When we worship, and read the Word of God, we replace fear with truth by remembering God’s promises, remaining in God’s protection and rejoicing in God’s provision. During this past month we had our Partnership Week. Thank you to all our viewers and partners who sowed into the ministry this week. We saw people break chains of fear and step out in faith and freedom. No matter what circumstance we may currently face, as we learn to fix our gaze on Jesus our problems seem to become smaller and the perspective clearer. As you read this month’s magazine you will discover articles and stories about fear. My godly mother, who prayed me into the Kingdom, frequently used to say she was “worried sick” about this or that. But here’s the plain truth: worry is a sin! Over and over, the Bible commands, “Do not worry!” It doesn’t do a bit of good, but it can certainly do harm -like causing ulcers. Jesus bluntly challenged His followers: “Don’t worry about everyday life, whether you have enough food, drink, and clothes. Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Of course not. You have so little faith!” (Matthew 6:25,27, 30). To illustrate His point, Jesus said, “Look at the birds. They don’t need to plant or harvest because your heavenly Father feeds them” (Matt. 6:26). Have you ever seen a bird having a nervous breakdown? They don’t worry because they know God will feed them. And remember, “You are far more valuable to Him than they are” (Matt. 6:26).

“WHEN WE WALK CLOSELY WITH JESUS DAY BY DAY, WE FIND REST.” Many worries stem from worldly desires. Television adverts create an insatiable demand for things we don’t really need. Lust is wanting it now; trust is depending on God to provide.

Jesus said: “Why be like the pagans who are so deeply concerned about these things? Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs, and He will give you all you need from day to day if you live for Him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern” (Matt. 6:33-34).

“AS YOU FACE EACH DAY, DONʼT MISS THE BLESSING - ITʼS HIM!” When we walk closely with Jesus day by day, we find rest. But inner peace doesn’t come if we run here and there, wasting time and chasing worldly things. The world can corrupt us with its troubles, making us scared. After all, good news doesn’t sell newspapers! The devil wants to keep us on a treadmill with our nose to the grindstone, worrying about everything. But God says, “Fear not!” As you face each day, don’t miss the blessing - it’s Him! God loves you and knows your true needs, whether they be physical, social or financial. So come to Him in faith, give Him your burdens, seek His face, praise His name and He will supply!

CBN PARTNERS ARE CHANGING LIVES During September we had our Partnership week. On that week we broadcast special editions of the 700 Club show, which was full of testimonies and stories of how CBN partners are impacting the world. CBN Disaster Relief partnered with Italy for Christ to bring humanitarian aid to the victims of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake which struck on the 24th August at 02:36 (BST) and destroyed many small towns in the country. Unfortunately, there was a high number of casualties. Food, clothing and basic necessities came from all over the world. CBN and IFC provided shelter, beds, blankets, food and water for some of the victims. The focus now is to help with the reconstruction of the life and of the homes, for thousands of people who have lost everything. Thanks to your generosity we were able to mobilize quickly and work alongside partners to provide emergency relief and be a voice of hope in the midst of tragedies. NOT AFRAID

Learning How To Trust If there’s one thing that’s readily available in the world right now, it’s bad news. It’s everywhere; with every news cycle brimming with stories of chaos and danger. It produces a climate of fear and anxiety, no matter where you are in the world. It’s not just on a global, big picture scale either. Everyday I meet people who live with a “what if” fear, terrified of unknown yet fully expected bad news. I have to be honest, I find this fear infectious. Maybe you do too. When we look to the Bible for comfort, we can find it dressed in a way that we might not expect. Often we are guilty of believing the lies that Christianity means that we no longer experience bad news, or worse, that we should pretend bad news isn’t bad. That’s simply not the case: Psalm 112 is a description of a righteous man and in verses 7-8 we find these words: “He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.” Even the righteous man (or woman!) will experience bad news - that’s part R|08

of living in a fallen world. However, the difference for those of us who know Jesus is our response to this bad news. Our flesh naturally reacts in fear; but, as we follow God, we learn a new response; trust. Look at the words the Psalmist uses: Not afraid. Firm. Trust. Steady. These are our promised experiences when we trust God through our bad news. The pathway to trusting God is simply accepting that he loves us. He loves me... so he will keep me safe. He loves me... so he will provide. He loves me... so he will make a way. That’s why John, in 1 John 4:18, reminds us that there is no fear in love: knowing God’s love will cause faith and trust to flourish, whilst choking the weeds of fear. Bad news is inevitable but our reaction to it is a choice. Fear may be our first response but, just like an Olympic diver, we can confidently plunge into the deep pool of the Father’s love for us, which will wash our fears away.

AN ARTISTʼS JOURNEY When I was 20 I took my first design class. They taught me how to paint, shape and form. I knew then this was something God wanted to use. I feared I would never make it as an artist, so I got a desk job and stayed there for 8 years. There was so much negativity spoken over me when I was younger that I believed it as truth. It was easy for me to accept hateful words, so that I didn’t trust love. One night I was really struggling with it all. I cried out to God and this force of pure love came over me, in a brief moment I saw all the areas I had been trapped in, things God wasn’t pleased with. It wasn’t condemnation, it was intense love. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever experienced.

“IT WAS LIKE MY VISION WENT FROM BLACKS AND GREYS TO COLOUR.”

I had a dream that this woman in my small group was praying for me. I felt peace in contrast to all the depression. I described what I had seen to her and she prayed for me. I believed I was hateful, a horrible person, that there was no point, and it was not a Christ mindset. Even though I was saved and I was given the mind of Christ, I was choosing to believe those lies. I went to a deliverance ministry, and with God’s help I was able to replace lies with what God said about me, after that the fear just lifted. The day after I got back I walked into my job. I asked God for courage because I knew I couldn’t do this anymore. Instead of making an 8 year fear based decision, I made an instant faith based decision. I packed a box with my stuff and left. Blessings started pouring in, the best way I can describe it is the way an artist would describe it: It was like my vision went from blacks and greys to colour.

LIFE CHANGING CALLS Providing Prayer in Lifeʼs Trials

CBN is a ministry founded on prayer. Prayer has been a part of our DNA from the very beginning. Prayer is God’s provision for a life-changing relationship with Himself. It is through prayer that we exercise our faith and communicate with our Father in heaven. Our prayers declare that we believe God will answer our requests and keep His promises.

We can learn much from the Lord’s Prayer, which Jesus taught His disciples (see Matthew 6:9-13):

be willing to forgive other people—even as God is willing to forgive us. Finally, we must ask the Lord to keep us walking in His way, so that we might be covered by His power and anointing, and protected from Satan’s influences. CBN’s outreaches have always been grounded in the power of prayer. You, as a CBN partner, help provide a place of prayer for millions of people around the globe. When hard times come, or circumstances are overwhelming, you make it possible for people to find someone who cares and will pray with them for their encouragement, salvation and miracles. Internationally, we received millions of calls, emails, and text messages as well. Just think of the impact your partnership has in providing hope and miraculous answers to prayer for hurting people when they need it most. Here is just an example: Fereshteh in Iran was diagnosed with an incurable disease. The pain was intolerable and she planned to take her own life. Before following through, she turned on the television and began watching a CBNproduced programme translated into her native language of Farsi. Fereshteh gave her life to Christ. Days later, she was medically re-examined - and given a clean bill of health! After her estranged husband found out, he returned home to their family, and made Jesus the Lord and Saviour of his life. Amila is happy now that she can attend daycare.

CAKE FOR AMILA Hope for a Better Future

Amila turned 4, but she didn’t have presents or cake. Her mom was ashamed to tell her that there wasn’t money for a party. Neither was there money for day care in their poor community in South Africa. Then, LifeChild, a ministry supported by CBN’s Orphan’s Promise learned about Amila. We enrolled her on the daycare and payed all of her fees. Now, during the day she is learning lots of new things and she finally gets to play with her friends. “I love it here! At home I only have one toy, but here there are many toys and many friends,” says Amila. During one of the Bible lessons, the teacher asked the class who wanted to be Jesus’ friend. Every little hand went up, except Amila’s. She explains: R|12

“I didn’t raise my hand, because I first wanted to go home and clean myself up. I didn’t want to be dirty when I met Jesus.” Soon, Amila’s parents gave their lives to Christ too. “Amila is the one who told us to pray. Something we never did before. I know now that the most important thing is the Bible in our relationship with God,” shares her mother. To help the family earn a steady income, CBN enrolled Amila’s mother in sewing classes, soon she will be starting her own business. So, the next time Amila’s birthday comes around she will have plenty of cake and presents. “I no longer worry, she has a bright future ahead of her”, concludes her mother.

THROUGH YOUR SUPPORT: #West Africa Recently, more than 29,000 people heard the Gospel through 91 evangelistic outreaches. Also, the prayer centres in Nigeria and Ghana responded to over 16,000 calls, emails, letters, and text messages. Additionally, CBN built fresh water wells in three rural communities in Ghana, benefiting 1,950 people.

#Cambodia Every day during Cambodia’s 6-month dry season, Ratana trudged 5 miles to a polluted pond for his family’s water. The 13-year-old often got sick drinking it. Ratana’s parents were poor sugar cane farmers. They saved up and bought vegetable seeds and chickens to provide food and income. But a severe drought killed the crops and chickens and sadly, Ratana’s parents couldn’t afford to keep him in school. Thankfully, CBN discovered the situation and dug a well for their village, giving them clean water! They also gave Ratana’s family seeds, chickens, ducks and pigs. Their farm is thriving, and Ratana is back in school! Best of all, the family began attending the local church that partners with CBN - and they all received Christ!

Dido’s father dove for sea cucumbers. It’s a dangerous job that pays little - but it was the only way he could feed his family. In desperation, the couple cried out for God’s help. Then, CBN’s Orphan’s Promise started a preschool nearby, where Dido gets healthy lunches and his mother works part-time! We also gave his father a boat engine and new nets. He earns more so he can now provide for his family. R|13

MOUNTAINS OF FEAR Milly Smart | Superbook UK Coordinator One summer I was training to climb a mountain. A physical mountain, the highest free-standing mountain in the world, a huge 5,895 metres of mountain. I had signed up for the challenge during my freshers week at university, when the following September felt like forever away, but suddenly Mount Kilimanjaro loomed at the end of my summer striking fear into the deepest part of me. My biggest fear was that I wouldn’t be able to do it and that I would fail to reach the top. R|14

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20

So I was training hard. I was on holiday with my family in Turkey and my dad and I would get up before the sun rose (which is pretty early for a holiday!), put on our hiking boots and set out into the hills. We walked for several hours, across vineyards and olive tree groves, along deserted tracks and through sleepy villages. My feet blistered and my legs ached, but we carried on, my fear of failure pushing me forward. I remember the clear blue skies

as we came to the top of a hill one morning, when we were following the path alongside a property with a large metal fence. Suddenly three large Alsatian dogs were barking and growling, fighting to get past each other and straining at the fence to get to us. We jumped, hearts pounding, and then laughed, agreeing that we were extremely grateful for the barrier that separated us from these ferocious beasts. stopped. Thirty seconds later, we heard it again, and looked behind us, seeing, to our horror, the three dogs racing towards us, snapping and snarling.

ran. My tired legs gained a burst of energy and we started to sprint across the field. Logic told me they would catch us, I couldn’t possibly outrun them, but panic had seized me and fear had me tightly in its grip. Thankfully, my dad was with me. He suddenly shouted ‘No! Stop running! Pick up rocks! Throw them!’ Then he stopped, turned, placed himself in front of me, lifted his arms wide and high and he roared. I scrabbled behind him for stones, and had them ready to throw, but the battle had already been won. At the sight of my dad, roaring with all his might, the three savage animals cowered and stopped advancing, growling still. Once I started throwing stones in their direction they turned and bounded back to their home.

Fear, a most basic instinct, rose instantly and sickeningly. Adrenalin shot through me and we turned and

I tell you this story because I can remember the physical effect of fear. Fear freezes us. Our muscles tense, our

heart beats faster, our mouths go dry, we sweat and feel dizzy. This happens in times of immediate fear; when we are chased by dogs, when we see a spider, when we are trapped in a small space, or looking down from a great height or plunged into darkness. It can also happen when we are faced with metaphorical mountains; redundancy, a marriage breakdown, debt, exams, illness, failure, rejection, or perhaps even missing God’s call on our lives. In the Bible we read how God’s people respond to fear, sometimes by fleeing, and sometimes by freezing. Remember when the Israelite army stopped for forty days because ‘they were so frightened of Goliath that they couldn’t do a thing’ (1 Samuel 17:11)? Or when 22,000 men left the battle because God told them they could go if they were too fearful to fight (Judges 3:3)? When fear rules in our hearts, we miss out on seeing the greatness of God’s plan over our lives. Who won the victory in these situations? God! Yes, it’s the Sunday school answer. The Bible tells us that the devil ‘prowls around like a roaring lion’ (1 Peter 5:8). The enemy longs for you to flee from your potential, or to hide in your room. But remember my story. You see, my dad was bigger than those dogs. And I can promise that whatever fear you are facing today, the One who is with you is bigger and more powerful. Someone once advised me: ‘instead of telling God how big your mountains are, tell the mountains how big your God is’. It has always stuck with me. How often do I come to God with my impossible fears; the things I’ll never

accomplish, the relationships I could never heal, the adventures I’ll never go on, or the illness, poverty, hate and pain I see in this broken world? These mountains that I fear can dominate my prayer life. But what does the Bible tell us can move mountains? Faith.

“LET FAITH BE YOUR MOTIVATION, NOT FEAR.”

I reached the summit of Kilimanjaro. My God moved that mountain, as I put my faith in him, step by step. All God asks is that, rather than focus on our fears, we fix our eyes on him. Let faith be your motivation, not fear. When you are most afraid, choose to step out in faith. Know that, although the enemy is like a lion, our God is the roaring Lion of Judah. In the words of Psalm 27 ‘The LORD is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life-- of whom shall I be afraid?’ R|17

“CHANGE THE FOCUS FROM THE CIRCUMSTANCE TO WHO GOD IS.”

Ruth Graham, daughter of famous televangelist Billy Graham, has faced some hard times and tough situations throughout her life, including her husband’s infidelities, her divorce, her teenage daughter’s two unplanned pregnancies, her other daughter’s bulimia and her son’s battle with drugs. Now, she’s drawing on those experiences to help others cope with adversity. As the third child of Billy Graham, it comes as no surprise that she now has started her own ministry Ruth Graham and Friends. What may be surprising is that she’s talking about real issues that some people may be reluctant to share. You have gone through some real struggles, talk about some of the difficulties God has walked you through: God has given me a unique voice in my family because of some of the stuff I have been through; with the infidelities, the depression that followed the divorce, and then knowing that my oldest child was suffering with an eating disorder, my son was dabbling in drugs and my third child came to me and said, “I think I’m pregnant”. More recently, I got a phone call from her, she was pregnant again but R|18

she is now married with an 18 month old child. She called me and said she thinks she was going into labour. While I was on my morning walk the next day, I got a call from my oldest daughter saying the baby had come. The baby has multiple problems. Oesophageal atresia, which means the stomach and the oesophagus don’t meet. That was in August and he is still in the hospital and will have surgery next week. I know what it is to face uncertain times. When you are driving up the highway to go see your child, and every mile your phone rings and the information gets worse. I couldn’t read my bible because I was driving, and the praise music was not registering with me. In the back of my book I have an ABC praise list, characteristics of God with ABC’s, that’s what I pulled into my mind. Change the focus from the circumstance to who God is. That is when we can let go of the fear. Focusing on God is the key. I love the title of your book: Fear Not Tomorrow God’s Already There, can you explain this? It actually came from my mother’s plaque which came from her bible study desk. When I was going through a difficult time with one of my children, she pulled it off her wall and sent it to me. It now hangs in my office. When I got it I wondered if that was a platitude, fear not tomorrow, God’s already there. Is He really there? What’s He like? I delved into the scriptures to find characteristics of God, through the person of Jesus Christ. How do you trust God in the midst of uncertainty, and tragedy? How did you come up with an answer for yourself?

“THATʼS HOW I FOCUS ON GOD, I KEEP A TRACK RECORD OF HIM.”

It’s about knowing who He is, and building a track record. If you don’t know Him, you can begin today. I write things down. One of God’s big gripes with the Israelites was that they didn’t remember. They would get into trouble somewhere and he would be like ‘but don’t you remember I delivered you’. They would grumble because they didn’t have food, and he’d be like ‘don’t you remember I delivered you’. Over and over again they would forget and I am the same way. I face a new problem and I get all upset, anxious, worried, and He reminds me what He did back there. That’s how I focus on God, I keep a track record of Him. You do that through scripture, prayer, and through friends. It’s very important to have christian friends around us.

THE GOOD SAMARITAN

Superbook: The Good Samaritan brings one of Jesus’ famous parables to life. He tells the story to answer the question, “Who is my neighbour?” Like the priest and the temple assistant who passed the wounded Jewish man on the side of the road, we may not want to get involved in the sin and the sorrow of this world. But in His sermon on the mount, Jesus taught that blessed are those who mourn. This means that God wants our heart to break for the things that break His heart. Even though the Samaritan came from a different culture and background than the Jewish man, he felt compassion for this wounded man. We must ask the Lord to give us the compassion of Jesus for those who are hurting in this world - even if they are different from us. And then we must act to reach out with love to these hurting people. The ministry that the good Samaritan gave to the wounded Jewish man cost him something - in his own physical strength, His time, and from his finances. God is calling us to have a giving heart and to trust Him to be able to give from our treasure to help those who are hurting around us - even when it is a sacrifice to do so.
