Per sapere dove è stata scattata l’immagine di copertina basta salire in Città Alta e camminare a testa in su, fino a notare, in Piazza Vecchia, la torre più alta della città: il Campanone, che con i suoi 52 metri sovrasta i monumenti circostanti, sui quali proietta da secoli la sua maestosa ombra. Il Campanone risuona ancora oggi i cento rintocchi delle 22.00, che un tempo segnalavano la chiusura delle porte d’ingresso alla città.

To understand where this cover photo was taken, just head towards upper Bergamo and walk to Piazza Vecchia looking upwards until you see the highest tower in the city: the “Campanone”, or big bell tower, which at 52 metres tall dominates the surrounding monuments, and onto which it has cast its majestic shadow for centuries. The Campanone still tolls one hundred times at 10 p.m. This sound once signalled the closing of the entrance gates of the city. Its true charm lies in the view that can be enjoyed from its rooftop: a breathtaking panorama that takes in the whole of Bergamo and the surrounding Prealp mountains, which has fascinated many poets, dreamers and photographers over the centuries.

Editoriale _ Il condottiero buongustaio In una delle scene del celebre affresco che il Romanino realizzò nel Castello di Malpaga è raffigurata la tavola alla quale sono seduti Bartolomeo Colleoni e Re Giovanni di Danimarca, che il grande condottiero ospitò nella sua fastosa residenza nella pianura bergamasca. Non è possibile distinguere i cibi nei piatti, nÊ il cronista che narrò lo storico incontro entra nei dettagli, ma ci si può immaginare che nei bicchieri dei due personaggi e del loro seguito ci fosse il vino migliore. Si dice che il Colleoni apprezzasse molto il vino prodotto nella Val Calepio e che le sue dispense ne fossero ben provviste. Il condottiero e sua maestà brindarono con l’ottimo vino che ancora oggi è la principale caratteristica della bella fascia collinare che si affaccia sul Lago d’Iseo. Non è l’unico riferimento storico all’itinerario che condurrà i lettori di questo numero di The Key tra le eccellenze dei prodotti della terra bergamasca. Documenti attestano, ad esempio, che i Duchi di Milano apprezzassero molto i formaggi che dagli alpeggi sui monti bergamaschi venivano portati alle loro mense con lunghe carovane. Un viaggio tra passato e presente, ottimi prodotti e cucina di qualità che sicuramente richiameranno i buongustai. Ma la scoperta del territorio bergamasco non si esaurisce qui. Ed ecco allora un anticipo della stagione invernale tra le località sciistiche.

The gourmet “condottiero�

In a scene in the celebrated fresco painted by Romanino in Malpaga Castle, Bartolomeo Colleoni and King John of Denmark are depicted seated at a table. The king was a guest of the great “condottiero� at this splendid residence on the Bergamask plain. We can’t distinguish the food on their plates, and the chronicler narrating this historic encounter does not go into details, but we can imagine that in the glasses of the men and their cortege was the finest wine. It is said that Colleoni really enjoyed the wine produced in the Calepio Valley and his cellars were well stocked with it. The “condottiero� and the king were making a toast with a fine wine that is still today a main feature of the beautiful band of hills that overlook Lake Iseo. This is not the only historical reference on a journey that guides readers in this issue of The Key through the excellent products coming from the Bergamo area. Documents bear witness, for example, to the fact that the Dukes of Milan enjoyed the cheeses which, from the Bergamask valleys, were brought to their dining halls in long convoys. A journey among past and present, excellent products and fine cuisine that will surely attract the gourmets among you. But this is not all Bergamo province has to offer: we’re also previewing the upcoming winter season in the ski resorts.

l territorio bergamasco ha caratteristiche tali da renderlo inconfondibile: pianura, laghi, colline, e poi montagna, tanta montagna. Notevoli differenze ambientali, forti contrasti che si riflettono anche sulla vita e sull’economia, sulle tradizioni e sulla cultura locale e, inevitabilmente, anche sui cibi e la cucina. Un viaggio attraverso la terra bergamasca non solo offre la possibilità di conoscere un patrimonio del tutto inaspettato ma è l’occasione per godere la buona tavola: quasi ovunque itinerari storici e artistici incrociano percorsi enogastronomici, con gustose tappe da non dimenticare.

Fino a qualche decennio fa i formaggi prodotti negli alpeggi sul versante delle Orobie ben esposti al sole avevano molti estimatori ma erano poco conosciuti. Oggi la provincia di Bergamo detiene il primato, su tutto il territorio italiano, della produzione del maggior numero di formaggi a Denominazione di Origine Protetta (DOP).

Si tratta di un record di eccellenze tali da soddisfare i palati più esigenti e che, ben giustamente, ha portato a livello internazionale la fama di alcuni di questi formaggi.

Lo Strachitund (che sta diventando DOP) di antica e limitata produzione, gode di un sapore e gusto molto caratteristico, e ha trovato estimatori anche a New York e a Tokyo.

Questo speciale formaggio ha origine dalle casere della Val Taleggio, patria anche del Taleggio che è strettamente collegato a questa valle che gli dà il nome. Di sapore delicato, al Taleggio viene affiancato lo Stracchino, che viene prodotto in tutto il

ergamo province has features that make it unmistakeable: a plain, lakes, hills and mountains - a great many mountains. A place of considerable environmental variety and marked contrasts that also influence the area’s lifestyle and economy, traditions and local culture and, inevitably, food and cuisine.

A journey through Bergamo province not only offers the opportunity to discover an entirely unexpected heritage, but it is also an occasion to enjoy superb food: almost everywhere historic and artistic itineraries mingle with wine and food tours featuring unforgettable culinary experiences.

Up until a few decades ago, the cheeses produced in the pastures on the sunny slopes of the Orobie mountains had a great many admirers but were little known.

Today the province of Bergamo holds the record for the greatest number of cheeses with Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) in Italy. These cheeses are of such good quality that they satisfy even the most discerning of palates and this, rightly so, has made some internationally renowned. Strachitund (soon to become DOP), a historic cheese of limited production, has a very characteristic flavour and taste, and has found admirers even in New York and Tokyo. This special cheese is made in the dairies of the Taleggio valley, which is also home to Taleggio cheese and to which it has given its name. With a delicate flavour, Taleggio complements Stracchino, a cheese produced throughout the Bergamask area. Gourmets also focus their attention on nearby Brembana Valley which produces Branzi, a cheese that complements

bergamasco. Nella vicina Valle Brembana, si concentra l’attenzione dei buongustai; a partire dal Branzi, che si affianca al Bitto e al Formai de mut (Formaggio di monte), entrambi a Denominazione di Origine Protetta.

Sempre lungo l’arco della montagna bergamasca troviamo diversi tipi di formagelle (di Valle Imagna, della Valle Seriana, di Bossico, della Val Cavallina, della Valle di Scalve, oltre alla formaggella bergamasca). In Alta Valle Seriana troviamo lo Scalet, formaggio di pasta dura dalla forma strana, mentre sul Monte Bronzone nasce lo stracchino chiamato appunto Bronzone. Scendiamo al piano. Dal latte di allevamenti in pianura hanno origine altri formaggi noti: Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, Provolone, Quartirolo, Salva.

La qualità dei vini bergamaschi è molto cresciuta rispetto al passato. La produzione è ora concentrata nelle località più belle e meglio esposte della lunga fascia collinare che va dalla Valle San Martino alla Valle Calepio. Gli ottimi terreni, una lunghissima tradizione, una autentica “cultura del vino” sono all’origine dei vini Valcalepio che nel 1976, con il rosso e il riserva rosso, ha ottenuto il riconoscimento della Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC). Un rigoroso disciplinare garantisce pure l’ottimo Valcalepio bianco. Oltre che nell’area specifica della Valle Calepio, i vini Valcalepio vengono prodotti nell’agro di Almenno (celebre per le testimonianze d’arte romanica) e sui pendii della Valle San Martino che scendono dolcemente verso il fiume Adda. Un autentico “unicum” è rappresentato da un altro grande vino bergamasco: il Moscato di Scanzo Docg, da dessert e un classico “da meditazione”.

Molto antico, l’area di produzione è compresa nei confini del Comune di Scanzo ed è la DOCG più piccola a livello nazionale.

Quasi in parallelo all’estendersi dei vigneti Valcalepio, si sta diffondendo nella fascia collinare la coltivazione degli ulivi che sta dando notevoli risultati. Grazie anche al particolare clima dovuto alla presenza del lago, grande vanto è l’olio extravergine “Sebino”, al quale è riconosciuta la Denominazione di Origine Protetta (DOP).

We also find different types of soft cheeses along the Bergamask mountain range (in the Imagna and Seriana valleys, in Bossico, and in the Cavallina and Scalve valleys, as well as in Bergamo). The upper Seriana Valley is home to Scalet, a hard cheese with strange shape, while on Mount Bronzone a type of stracchino cheese is made which is called, obviously, Bronzone. Descending to flatter ground, we find other well known cheeses made from milk produced on farms on the plain: Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, Provolone, Quartirolo and Salva.

The quality of Bergamask wines has increased greatly compared to the past. The production is now concentrated in some of the most beautiful and better exposed sites on the long band of hills that extend from the San Martino Valley to the Calepio Valley. The excellent soil, ancient traditions and a genuine “wine culture” are at the heart of Valcalepio wines, which in 1976, with a red and reserve red, obtained the Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) recognition. Strict controls also guarantee the excellent white Valcalepio wine. Valcalepio wines are also produced, in addition to the specific area of the Calepio Valley, in the countryside surrounding Almenno (famous for its Romanesque treasures) and on the slopes of the San Martino Valley that descend gently towards the river Adda.

Another great and unique Bergamask wine is Moscato di Scanzo DOCG, a dessert wine and a classic “meditation” wine. The extremely old production area of this wine is located within the boundaries of the municipality of Scanzo and is the smallest production with Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG) in Italy.

Almost in parallel with the expansion of Valcalepio vineyards, olive groves are spreading over the band of hills and producing excellent results. Thanks to the unique climate due to the presence of the lake, “Sebino” extra-virgin olive oil with DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) recognition is the pride of the area. The undisputed symbol of Bergamask traditions is polenta, which features, above all, as

Indiscusso simbolo della tradizione bergamasca è la polenta, che spicca soprattutto come componente di piatti tipici: con la carne (un classico è la polenta e coniglio), con i funghi (in collina e nelle valli se ne trovano pregiati e di ottima qualità), con un bel tagliere di formaggi (bergamaschi, ovviamente), con i salumi. Molto appetitosa è la polenta taragna, un tempo piatto forte dei montanari. Altra presenza costante nella maggior parte dei menu di tradizione sono i “casonsei” (casoncelli) e gli “scarpinocc”. In entrambi i casi si tratta di ravioli il più delle volte di produzione familiare o artigianale. I primi con un ripieno di carne e salame, i secondi sono invece del tutto “magri”. Per gli “scarpinocc” esiste un luogo rigorosamente d’origine: Parre, dove si tiene anche una sagra. All’elenco di specialità per buongustai sono da aggiungere salami, cotechini e salsiccia, lardo e pancetta, per i quali si ricorre a carni di qualità da suini allevati quasi ovunque nella pianura.

L’elenco potrebbe continuare ancora, ma ci limitiamo ad indicare “nicchie” di una produzione estremamente varia e qualificata, sempre tenendo conto di alcune peculiarità locali. Come i coregoni, i cavedani e le sarde: pesci pescati nel Lago d’Iseo, fatti essiccare e poi stagionati sott’olio. Con la polenta sono una squisitezza. E poi i tartufi (neri e bianchi), l’insalatina dei colli di Bergamo (nota come scarola), le mele dei pometi in Valle Brembana, le birre artigianali, le castagne nella caratteristica produzione dei “biligocc” (ossia castagne affumicate), proposti in tutte le sagre della stagione invernale.

E per finire all’elenco di tante specialità va aggiunto quella che può essere considerata una caratteristica e una ricchezza della terra bergamasca: le acque minerali che, imbottigliate, sono diffuse ovunque. Una fonte, quella di San Pellegrino Terme, la si trova sulle tavole dei ristoranti di ogni continente.

an ingredient in many local dishes: with meat (a classic dish is polenta and rabbit), with mushrooms (many prized mushrooms of excellent quality are found in the hills and valleys), with a delicious platter of cheeses (Bergamask, of course), and with cured meats. A delicious alternative is polenta taragna (polenta with buckwheat flour), once the staple dish of mountain dwellers. Another continuous presence on most traditional menus are “casonsei” (casoncelli) and “scarpinocc”. In both cases these are ravioli-type stuffed pasta shapes that are often home-made or produced locally. The first type has a filling of meat and salami, the second type is instead much “leaner”. “Scarpinocc” are only produced in Parre, where a festival to celebrate them is also held. To this list of speciality gourmet products we should add salami, “cotechini” (type of sausage) and sausages, “lardo” (cured bacon fat) and “pancetta” (bacon), made from quality meat from pigs raised almost everywhere on the plain.

We could continue naming excellent foods, but we’ll just mention some of the “niche” items in this extremely varied and distinguished list, taking into account some of the unusual local produce, such as whitefish, chub and shad: fish caught in Lake Iseo, dried and then pickled in oil - with polenta they are exquisite. And then there are truffles (black and white), salad from the hills of Bergamo (known also as scarola or escarole), apples from the orchards of the Brembana Valley, local beers, and chestnuts, which are used to produce “biligocc” (smoked chestnuts), offered at all festivals and feasts in winter.

We’ll end this list of specialities with something that is an abundant feature of the area: mineral water, which, bottled, is found everywhere. Water from the San Pellegrino Terme spring, for example, is found on the tables of restaurants on every continent.

La manifestazione coinvolgerà vini a base Merlot, Cabernet e tagli bordolesi. Weekend sugli sci tra le nevi delle Orobie: Sport, gusto e benessere

li sport della neve sulle montagne bergamasche sono molto diffusi e si possono trovare impianti di risalita e piste per la discesa e per lo sci da fondo lungo tutto l’arco delle Orobie. Ambienti molto vari e di grande suggestione dove trascorrere giornate indimenticabili sugli sci. Un’autentica vocazione allo sport e all’ospitalità offre agli appassionati e ai turisti la possibilità di weekend sulla neve passando non solo da un impianto all’altro ma di valle in valle.

Ogni località sciistica e ogni valle ha proprie caratteristiche inconfondibili: un patrimonio ambientale cui si affianca una straordinaria ricchezza d’arte e di storia. Senza dimenticare le opportunità di svago e di divertimento, apprezzando al tempo stesso l’ottima cucina alle cui radici sta la tradizione della gente di montagna. Non c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta che, qualunque essa sia, sarà sempre al meglio.

Ecco qualche spunto per una vacanza di due giorni sulla neve adatta a tutti i gusti.

Each skiing location and each valley has its own unmistakeable characteristics: an environmental heritage accompanied by an extraordinary abundance of art and history, together with plenty of opportunities for leisure and entertainment and for appreciating the excellent cuisine, which has its roots in the traditions of the mountain folk.

You’ll be spoilt for choice but, whatever you choose, it will always be the best.

Here are some ideas for a two-day holiday on the snow suited to all tastes.

Valle Brembana: sci e buona cucina La Valle Brembana è storica per gli sport invernali nella Bergamasca, ma è ancor più nota forse come “valle dei formaggi” per la produzione di ben quattro formaggi DOP. 1° giorno: la prima sciata è d’obbligo a Foppolo, che con i suoi impianti è tra le maggiori località sciistiche dell’arco alpino. Gli impianti di risalita arrivano fino a 2.100 metri di quota consentendo di utilizzare decine di chilometri di pista ben esposti al sole. Qui si può trascorrere una giornata sugli sci intrecciando discese in ambienti naturali molto suggestivi, e se si vuol variare si può praticare pattinaggio o sci di fondo. Al termine della giornata ci godiamo un’ottima cena a base dei prodotti tipici e degli speciali formaggi di questa valle non dimenticandosi di assaggiare la polenta taragna che in questa area è rinomata. Completano la serata le discoteche e i locali per il doposci.

2° giorno: continuiamo, sci a i piedi, nel comprensorio Bremboski, che include anche gli impianti di San Simone-Valleve e di Carona, per un totale di 80 chilometri di piste. Da non perdere le località di Piazzatorre e anche di Valtorta, piccolo centro chiuso tra i monti dal quale gli impianti di risalita portano al comprensorio dei Piani di Bobbio. Nel pomeriggio potremmo fare visita ad alcuni caseifici di Branzi e della Val Taleggio per assaggiare il meglio della produzione casearia locale per poi scendere a cenare in San Pellegrino Terme, la celebre località termale, dove possiamo ammirare gli splendidi edifici Liberty che testimoniano i fasti che la cittadina visse durante le “Belle époque”.

Valle Brembana: skiing and good cuisine Valle Brembana is historically well known in Bergamo province for its winter sports, but it is even better known as “the valley of cheeses” for its production of some four PDO cheeses.

1st day: our first day’s skiing should take place in Foppolo, one of the major ski resorts of the Alpine region. The ski lifts climb up to 2,100 metres, giving skiers the opportunity to use dozens of kilometres of sun-kissed pistes. The day can be spent skiing, winding down slopes through striking natural environments, or there is the option for variation with ice-skating and cross-country skiing. At the end of the day an excellent meal made with traditional produce and the valley’s special cheeses can be enjoyed, without forgetting to taste polenta taragna, which is renowned in this area. Discotheques and after-ski clubs complete the evening.

2nd day: we continue on, with a ski on each foot, to the Bremboski area which also includes the San Simone-Valleve and Carona resorts, making a total of 80 kilometres of pistes. Piazzatorre and Valtorta, a small centre hidden away between the mountains, whose ski lifts reach the Piani di Bobbio resort, are not to be missed.

In the afternoon, we can visit a few dairies, such as Branzi and Val Taleggio, to taste the best of the local dairy produce, and then descend to the valley to dine in San Pellegrino Terme, the famous spa location, where we can admire splendid “Art Nouveau” buildings, testimony to the glories that the city experienced during the “Belle époque”.

Comprensorio Bremboski: sci con tutta la famiglia o con gli amici e un buon pranzo nei rifugi.

Bremboski ski area: skiing with all the family or with friends and an excellent lunch in the mountain refuges.

Valle Seriana: sole, sci e benessere Le chiamano le piste nel sole quelle della Val Seriana, e la tintarella è garantita dall’ottima esposizione delle quattro skiarea: Monte Pora, Presolana, Lizzola, Spiazzi di Gromo.

1° giorno: calziamo subito gli sci e iniziamo dalla più nota delle piste della Presolana; Monte Pora, con i suoi grandi spazi sui quali sono state tracciate 14 piste, lunghe complessivamente 40 chilometri, tra vedute entusiasmanti sul massiccio della Presolana.

Breve pausa in rifugio e proseguiamo nel vicino Passo della Presolana: le piste, lunghe 15 chilometri, sono tra le preferite dalle famiglie; c’è tanto spazio perché i bambini si divertano.

Dopo la giornata di sport cosa c’è di meglio di un percorso benessere per rilassarsi e rigenerarsi, godendosi le cure e i prodotti naturali dell’ambiente montano.

2° giorno: eccoci quindi a Lizzola, sciando nello straordinario anfiteatro offerto da alcune tra le più alte cime delle Orobie. Gli impianti di risalita sono 5, con 6 piste e 20 chilometri di discese con ampia possibilità di scelta tra tracciati dalle varie difficoltà.

In alternativa un ambiente più quieto è offerto dagli Spiazzi di Gromo, nella cui bella conca spaziano 15 chilometri di piste alla portata di tutti. Per la sera passeggiamo tra le stradine di Clusone, cittadina posta ad inizio valle, che offre, oltre al delizioso centro storico tanti caratteristici locali per cena e dopocena.

Valle Seriana: sun, ski and wellness They call the Valle Seriana pistes the ‘slopes in the sun’ and a tan is guaranteed thanks to the excellent exposure of the four ski areas: Monte Pora, Presolana, Lizzola and Spiazzi di Gromo.

1st day: we immediately strap on our skis and start from the best known resort of the Presolana area: Monte Pora with its wide slopes, out of which 14 pistes with a total length of 40 kilometres have been carved among exciting views of the Presolana mountain. After a brief stop in a mountain refuge, we continue on to nearby Passo della Presolana. The pistes here, which are 15 kilometres long, are preferred by families: there’s plenty of space for children to have fun.

After a day of sport, what could be better than a wellness experience for relaxation and regeneration, enjoying the treatments and natural products of the mountain environment?

2nd day: we arrive in Lizzola and ski in the extraordinary amphitheatre offered by some of the highest peaks in the Orobie range. There are 5 ski lifts, with 6 pistes and 20 kilometres of slopes, and a wide choice of trails of varying difficulty. Alternatively, Spiazzi di Gromo offers a quieter environment, where 15 kilometres of slopes, suitable for all, extend along its beautiful valley. In the evening, we can walk through the alleyways of Clusone, a town located at the foot of the valley, which offers many characteristic places for dinner and after dinner, as well as a delightful historical centre.

Valle di Scalve: sci e antiche tradizioni L’appartata Valle di Scalve ha mantenute intatte le sue caratteristiche di alta vallata alpina, intatta nella corona di alte cime di tipo dolomitico che racchiudono una delle più vaste pinete di Lombardia.

1° giorno: la regina delle piste da discesa della bergamasca è Colere con la sua Ski Area 2200, i cui impianti, come rivela il nome della stazione sciistica, portano fino ai 2.200 metri di altezza nel maestoso scenario del massiccio della Presolana.

Con piste omologate FISI, sciare qui accontenta sicuramente anche i più esperti.

2° giorno: per il giorno dopo cambiamo radicalmente e andiamo sull’altra pista da primato della valle, la pista da fondo che da Schilpario si addentra nella pineta con tracciati di varie difficoltà (uno anche agonistico) e con panorami naturali davvero speciali. Valle di Scalve: skiing and ancient traditions The high Alpine valley features of secluded Valle di Scalve, set among a crown of high Dolomitic peaks that surround one of the largest pine forests in Lombardy, have been largely left unspoilt.

1st day: the queen of the downhill slopes in the province of Bergamo is Colere with its Ski Area 2200. Its lifts, as described by the ski resort’s name, take skiers up to 2,200 metres among the majestic scenery of the Presolana mountain. With FISI approved slopes, skiing here satisfies even the experts.

2nd day: for the next day we make a radical change and move to the other record-breaking piste of the valley: the cross-country skiing track which, from Schilpario, disappears into the pine forest, with trails of varying difficulties (including a competition one) and truly special natural panoramas. The small Val di Scalve is rich in traditions, the mining industry being the most fascinating one; a visit to the ancient mines is not to be missed. To discover the real lives of the inhabitants of this part of the Alps, we conclude our day with a visit to the ethnography museum, one of the most interesting in Italy.

C

ome per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, Porta Nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, affiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la Via Tasso e, a ovest, la Via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.

In Via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il Palazzo della Provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il Teatro Donizetti affiancato dal monumento al grande musicista.

Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta.

I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni genere, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie.

Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, Via San Tomaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’Accademia Carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittoriche italiane ed europee. Di fronte la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è utilizzata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposizioni permanenti. Non molto lontano, nel borgo di Pignolo, il Museo Bernareggi d’Arte Sacra.

orta Nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lower Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demolished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Bergamo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.

Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the Provincial Authority Building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone.

The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of San Bartolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the Donizetti Theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were established along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias.

Along Via San Tomaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century building housing the Accademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The Bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

iazza Vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Bergamo, è il naturale punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazione di arrivo si esce subito sulla Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di Via GombitoVia Colleoni, la strada principale che attraversava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la Via Gombito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.

Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla Torre Civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del Palazzo della Ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo.

Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il Battistero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la Basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi trecenteschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di Gaetano Donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla Rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monastero di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

iazza Vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the funicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town.

Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval.

Via Gombito leads to Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful square built in the fifteenth century along the line of this road axis. There are many elements of great interest in this wonderful square including the fountain donated by the Venetian podestà Alvise Contarini; the civic tower built in the XII century; the municipal library building with its white marble façade (built in the seventeenth century as a new town hall), and the Palazzo della Ragione, dating back to the second half of the XII century.

Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni is entombed, and the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century frescoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizetti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter.

Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s history unites the various museums: the Rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti Cittadella.
