Una guida comoda e pratica, i cui contenuti sono stati studiati per rispondere alle reali esigenze del turista moderno, per viaggiare e contemporaneamente scoprire il territorio.

Stampata in 80.000 copie, “Key” è presente nelle camere degli hotel, Bed & Breakfast e Ostelli di Bergamo e dell’hinterland, nell’ufficio di Turismo Bergamo presso l’aeroporto di Orio al Serio e nelle sue 18 sedi estere, negli uffici Iat, in ristoranti, bar, negozi e anche negli aeroporti collegati con Bergamo.

Il nome della città deriva dal celtico ‘Bérghem’ proveniente da Berg (montagna) e Hem (casa). Ancora oggi la città viene chiamata, nel dialetto locale, Bérghem.

Bergamo ha la particolarità di essere disposta su due livelli: Bergamo Alta, situata su un colle e la Città Bassa, sulla pianura sottostante. In dialetto bergamasco la Città Alta si chiama “Berghèm de sura” e quella bassa “Berghèm de sòta”… provate anche voi a chiamarla come i veri bergamaschi, vi si apriranno molte porte, o almeno, molti sorrisi!

The city’s name comes from the Celtic ‘Bérghem’ – Berg (mountain) and Hem (house). Still today, the city is called Bérghem in the local dialect.

Bergamo has the unusual feature of being situated on two levels: Città Alta (upper Bergamo), on a hill, and Città Bassa (lower Bergamo), on the surrounding plain. In the Bergamask dialect the upper city is called “Berghèm de sura” and the lower “Berghèm de sòta”… why don’t you try calling it as the Bergamask people do, it might open a few doors, or at least bring some smiles!

Piazza Vecchia, il cuore di Bergamo di Pino Capellini

Bergamo città bellissima.

Così scriveva un viaggiatore veneziano del ‘600 che attraversò le terre lombarde. Probabilmente era già rientrato a Venezia quando lasciò queste note, e aveva ancora negli occhi, oltre che nel cuore, l’immagine della città, alta sul colle, vista dalla pianura mentre si avvicinava distinguendo a poco a poco i particolari del suo mirabile profilo, tra torri e campanili. è la stessa immagine che accoglie oggi il turista, anche se ha meno possibilità del viaggiatore di un tempo di sostare per ammirare le vedute, spesso disturbate da nuovi edifici. Ma l’incontro con la città sul colle è ancora quello di quattro secoli fa quando si supera la principale porta nelle mura, dedicata a Sant’Agostino. Ecco, al di là del passaggio, la monumentale fontana di candido marmo e di arenaria grigia con al centro il getto d’acqua fresca di una sorgente. Rappresentava per lo stanco viaggiatore la ricchezza e l’abbondanza della città.

Ma un’altra fontana oggi richiama l’attenzione del visitatore. è quella di piazza Vecchia, autentico perno visivo che esalta le proporzioni della piazza, considerata una delle più belle nei territori sui quali Venezia estese il proprio dominio.

Piazza Vecchia, the heart of Bergamo

Beautiful Bergamo city.

This is how a Venetian traveller in the seventeenth century described the city as he crossed Lombardy.

He had probably already returned to Venice when he put down his thoughts, but still had an image of the city in his mind, as well as his heart, high on the hilltop as he approached from the plain, slowly making out the details among the wonderful profile of spires and bell towers.

This is the same image that today welcomes tourists, even if they have less opportunities than the traveller to stop and admire the view, which is often obstructed by new buildings. But once through the main gate in the walls, dedicated to Sant’Agostino, the city on the hill is just the same as it was four centuries ago. A drinking fountain of white marble and grey sandstone gushing a jet of fresh spring water greeted the tired traveller and was a symbol of the richness and abundance of the city.

Another fountain today attracts the attention of the visitor. It is the one in Piazza Vecchia, a focal point that enhances the proportions of the square, considered one of the most beautiful in the area over which Venice extended its rule.

Anzi, c’è chi afferma che il luogo sembra una scena teatrale, tanto è perfetto l’equilibrio tra il vuoto della piazza, unificato dalla pavimentazione a grandi quadrati, e l’allineamento degli edifici, sormontati dalla mole della torre civica, o Campanone. Quasi un gigantesco punto esclamativo di pietra, verso il quale convergono le linee di questo spazio misurato. Per ammirarlo, occorre collocarsi sul lato opposto della piazza e da lì lasciare che lo sguardo vaghi libero, per essere alla fine attirato dalla sommità della torre, momento culminante di questa mirabile architettura. E non sembra, osservando nel chiaroscuro della loggia sotto il palazzo della Ragione, di vedersi muovere le maschere della Commedia dell’Arte? Dell’immortale Arlecchino e del suo compagno di avventure Brighella, che un’antica tradizione vuole siano nati nella Bergamasca? Un palcoscenico dove storia e leggenda, grandi personaggi e artisti, si muovono e fanno parlare di sé. Ma si può anche cambiare il nostro punto di vista e raggiungere, con un rapido e modernissimo ascensore, la cima della torre del Campanone. Per spaziare, con una vista a 360 gradi, sullo splendido panorama sui tetti della città, sulla pianura, sulla catena delle Alpi Orobiche, annunciata da una sequenza di verdissime colline. E, sempre da lassù, immaginare ideali percorsi attraverso Bergamo, per scoprirla e fare tesoro della sua bellezza.

In fact, some believe that it seems like a theatre stage, such is the perfect balance between the open space, united by the large square paving slabs, and the alignment of the buildings, dominated by the sheer size of the civic tower or Campanone (bell tower).

Like a giant stone exclamation mark, towards which the lines of this well-proportioned area converge, the tower is best admired from the opposite side of the square. Let your gaze roam freely until it is drawn towards the top of the tower, the highlight of this wonderful building.

And looking through the light and shade of the loggia under the Palazzo della Ragione, you can almost make out the stock characters, the immortal Arlecchino (Harlequin) and his crony Brighella, of the Italian Commedia dell’Arte, which according to tradition was created in the Bergamo region.

A stage where history and legends, great personalities and artists accompany visitors on their tour of the city.

You can also change your viewpoint and reach the top of the Campanone with a fast and modern lift. From here you can admire the wonderful 360-degree view over the roofs, the plain, and the lush green hills beneath the Orobie Alps, and plan your tour of the city, in discovery of its treasures.

24·02·2008 Circa 200 opere di 120 artisti riflettono ed esprimono gli influssi esercitati dal Futurismo sugli sviluppi dell’arte visiva del ‘900 fino ad arrivare alle più recenti ricerche contemporanee. La mostra, tra le più importanti a livello nazionale, si articola attraverso un percorso espositivo tematico che pone in relazione i linguaggi che hanno trovato il proprio fondamento teorico e poetico nei manifesti del movimento. Dalle opere degli esponenti storici del Futurismo (quali Boccioni, Balla, Carrà, Russolo, Severini, Depero) all’Astrattismo al Costruttivismo, dall’Arte Cinetica alle Neo Avanguardie degli anni ‘60 e ‘70 fino ai protagonisti dell’arte contemporanea.

Approximately 200 works by 120 artists reflect and express the influences exerted by Futurism on the developments of visual art from the nineteenth century up to the present day. The exhibition, among the most important at a national level, develops along a thematic trail which compares the languages that found their theoretical and poetic foundation in the manifestos of the movement. With works by the historic exponents of Futurism (such as Boccioni, Balla, Carrà, Russolo, Severini, Depero), to Abstractism and Constructivism, from Kinetic Art to the Neo-Avant-garde of the sixties and seventies, up to the protagonists of contemporary art.

Dal 1983 ad oggi, il ristorante “Ol Giopi e La Margi” offre piatti tipici ricchi di specialità locali ed estro gastronomico, con la stessa dedizione e passione di sempre.

I richiami alla tradizione e al territorio bergamasco sono molti iniziando dal nome che fa riferimento a due maschere bergamasche, il Gioppino e sua moglie Margherita, fino al menù che, con filastrocche (poesie della cultura contadina bergamasca), riporta la traduzione dei piatti in dialetto.

L’ambiente è articolato in tre sale dallo stile familiare ed elegante con caratteristici soffitti a botte e mattoni a vista dove le prelibatezze degli chef vengono servite ai tavoli in modo scenografico da ragazze che indossano il tradizionale costume orobico.

Assolutamente da provare e gustare sono i prelibati vini, che danno ampio spazio alla produzione lombarda di qualità, il ricco carrello dei formaggi con la migliore produzione casearia delle valli bergamasche e la succulenta pasticceria di produzione propria.

Since 1983, the restaurant “Ol Giopi e La Margi” has been offering typical dishes made with the same dedication and passion as always using local products and gastronomic flair.

References to traditions and the Bergamask area are many including the name, which comes from two Bergamask stock characters, Gioppino and his wife Margherita, and the menu, which uses Bergamask folk rhymes written in the local dialect to describe the dishes.

The restaurant is divided into three rooms, decorated in a welcoming and elegant style with characteristic barrel vault ceilings and exposed bricks, in which the excellent food is served by waiters wearing traditional costume.

Some of the items that absolutely must be tried are the choice wines, with many fine examples produced in Lombardy, the cheese trolley, offering the best dairy production from the Bergamask valleys and the delicious home-made pastries.

You’ll find it extremely difficult not to take home a souvenir from Bergamo, but take note of the opening times of the stores! Bergamo città bassa Bergamo lower town

Come per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, Porta Nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, affiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la via Tasso e, a ovest, la via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.

In via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il palazzo della Provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il Teatro Donizetti affiancato dal monumento al grande musicista.

Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo alta. I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni genere, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie.

Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, via San Tommaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’Accademia Carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittoriche italiane ed europee. Di fronte la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è utilizzata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposizioni permanenti. Non molto lontano, nel borgo di Pignolo, il Museo Bernareggi d’Arte Sacra.

Porta Nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (lower Bergamo) just as piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta (upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demolished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Bergamo, completed in 1927,was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.

Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the Provincial Authority Building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone.

The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of San Bartolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the Donizetti Theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were established along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias.

Along via San Tommaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century building housing the Accademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The Bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

Bergamo città alta Bergamo upper town Piazza Vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Bergamo, è il naturale punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazione di arrivo si esce subito sulla Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi.

Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di via Gombito-via Colleoni, la strada principale che attraversava la città da est ad ovest.

Ed è la via Gombito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.

Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla torre civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del Palazzo della Ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo. Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il Battistero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la Basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi trecenteschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di Gaetano Donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla Rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monastero di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

Piazza Vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the funicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town. Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along via Gombito-via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval. Via Gombito leads to Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful square built in the fifteenth century along the line of this road axis. There are many elements of great interest in this wonderful square including the fountain donated by the Venetian podestà Alvise Contarini; the civic tower built in the XII century; the municipal library building with its white marble façade (built in the seventeenth century as a new town hall), and the Palazzo della Ragione, dating back to the second half of the XII century. Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni is entombed, and the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century frescoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizetti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter. Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s history unites the various museums: the Rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti Cittadella.

Mi sono fermato a Bergamo 2 giorni e ho visitato la città, soprattutto la parte vecchia. Era la prima volta che mi trovavo a Bergamo. Ho preso la funicolare per raggiungere la Città Alta, ho fatto delle passeggiate lungo le mura e ho trovato la città davvero carina, con dei panorami molto suggestivi ed un’atmosfera molto affascinante! In Francia c’è una canzone che cita Bergamo e per quello ho sentito nominare la città! Ritornerei volentieri a Bergamo, anche per conoscere meglio la sua provincia e le offerte del territorio, ma mi piacerebbe trovare più proposte per i giovani (soprattutto concerti e vita notturna).

Penso anche che dovrebbe essere più pubblicizzata, perché è molto bella e spesso i turisti pensano di essere a Milano e non a Bergamo.

I stayed in Bergamo for 2 days and visited the city, in particular the old part. It was my first visit to Bergamo. I took the funicular to reach Città Alta and walked along the walls. I found the city very pretty, with beautiful views and a wonderful atmosphere. In France there is a song that mentions Bergamo and this is how I heard about the city!

I would willingly come back to Bergamo, and would like to get know its province better, but I would also like to find more offers for young people (particularly concerts and night life). I also think the city should be better advertised, because it’s very beautiful and tourists think about going to Milan and not Bergamo.

Purtroppo abbiamo avuto poco tempo per visitare Bergamo, ma ci torneremo sicuramente per conoscerla meglio, perché siamo rimasti affascinati dalla bellezza della sua architettura e anche del suo clima. Era la prima volta che sentivamo parlare di Bergamo e questa visita ci ha piacevolmente colpiti, perché non ci aspettavamo una città così ricca di fascino! Unfortunately we had little time to visit Bergamo, but we will certainly come back because we were charmed by the beauty of the architecture and enjoyed the climate. It was the first time we’d heard of Bergamo and it was a pleasant surprise as we hadn’t expected to find such an interesting city! We took loads of photos which we’ll show to our friends, and we’ll tell them to come and visit this city!

Vengo spesso a Bergamo, perché è una città che amo molto ed è molto facile (ed economica) da raggiungere. Qui poi ho trovato nuovi amici ed una grande ospitalità.

Ho potuto scoprire le bellezze della Città Bassa, tra cui Piazza Matteotti e Piazza Pontida, oltre che della parte alta. Inoltre mi piace esplorare le offerte della Provincia: questa volta ho affittato un’auto e sono stata in montagna, a Camerata Cornello e San Pellegrino e mi sono trovata benissimo. Sarebbe bello trovare tante nuove offerte benessere dopo le lunghe camminate e visite per la città!

I often come to Bergamo because it’s a city I love and it’s very easy (and cheap) to get to. Here I’ve found new friends and wonderful hospitality. I’ve been able to discover the beauty of the lower city, including Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Pontida, as well as the upper city. I also like exploring Bergamo province: this time I rented a car and stayed in the mountains, in Camerata Cornello and San Pellegrino, and I enjoyed myself a great deal. It would be wonderful to find many new wellbeing offers after long walks and visits to the city!

Ci sono oltre duecento vette – per l’esattezza sono 231 – che nella catena delle Alpi Orobiche superano i duemila metri, e tra queste un buon numero sono più alte dei tremila metri. Tantissime, se si pensa che sono concentrate in uno spazio relativamente modesto, delimitato dalle due maggiori vallate lombarde, la valle Camonica e la Valtellina. Montagne molto frequentate quelle bergamasche, sia per la grande passione che i bergamaschi riservano all’alpinismo e a tutti gli sport che in qualche modo sono legati ai monti, a partire dallo sci, sia per il fatto che sono le più vicine alla vasta area metropolitana nel cuore della Pianura Padana, al cui centro si colloca Milano.

There are more than two hundred peaks in the Orobie Alps – 231 to be precise – which are over two thousand metres high, and many of these are also over three thousand metres. This is an extremely large amount if you consider that they all are concentrated in a relatively small area, bound by the two largest Lombardy valleys, the Camonica valley and Valtellina. The Bergamask mountains are an extremely popular destination, primarily because the Bergamask people have a great passion for mountaineering and all sports connected to the mountains, in particular skiing, but also because they are the nearest mountains to the vast metropolitan area in the heart of the Padana plain, at the centre of which stands Milan.

Il modo migliore per raggiungere Città Alta è sicuramente utilizzare una delle due storiche funicolari.

In soli 5 minuti, passando attraverso un tunnel scavato nelle mura venete, vi ritroverete nel cuore della città antica. Se poi volete salire ancora più su, potete prendere la panoramica funicolare che da Porta S. Alessandro conduce al colle di S. Vigilio.

The best way to reach the upper town, is to take the historical funicular. In just five minutes you will pass through a tunnel dig in the old walls, that leads you in the heart of the Old Town. If you wish to get higher you can take the panoramic S.Vigilio hill Funicular.
