Editoriale Editorial La chiamano “Italia dei mille campaniliâ€? per sottolineare la grande varietĂ di tradizioni, culture locali, patrimoni storici e artistici, di dialetti e anche di prodotti tipici e piatti esistenti sul territorio italiano. I “mille campaniliâ€? sono un simbolo di questa varietĂ : su ogni paese spicca un campanile, nel quale ancora oggi gli abitanti si identificano. Una volta a questi campanili era affidato anche il compito di guidare il viandante che procedeva a piedi o a cavallo e non disponeva di altri punti di riferimento.

Oggi la situazione è radicalmente mutata, ma il campanile continua a farci da guida per conoscere un territorio attraverso i suoi “punti fortiâ€? che sono i centri storici.

Nella Bergamasca sono decine e decine quelli che meritano di essere visti. In questo numero di The Key ne presentiamo alcuni partendo, naturalmente, da quello di Bergamo Alta. E sempre in questo numero, considerata la stagione, non possiamo non parlare degli sport sulla neve, ai quali la catena delle Orobie offre uno spazio ideale.

Italy is often known as the “country of a thousand bell towers� to highlight the great variety of traditions, local cultures, historic and artistic heritage, dialects and even typical products and dishes found throughout the land. The “thousand bell towers� are a symbol of this great variety: each town has a bell tower, in which its inhabitants identify themselves.

Once these bell towers were used to guide wayfarers who travelled on foot or on horseback and had no other points of reference. Today the situation has changed dramatically, but the bell towers continue to guide us in our discovery of the “strong pointsâ€? – the old districts – of a town. Bergamo province offers dozens of old districts that are well worth visiting. In this edition of The Key we are presenting several, beginning, naturally, with CittĂ Alta (Upper Bergamo). And again in this edition, considering the season, we inevitably talk about winter sports‌ and the Orobie mountains offer the perfect environment.

Per la prima volta su una nostra copertina pubblichiamo un’immagine della provincia di Bergamo. Tra le tante bellezze che il territorio offre abbiamo scelto la regina dell’inverno: la montagna. Questo panorama delle alpi Orobie bergamasche è stato ripreso da Colere (Val di Scalve), sulla destra spicca il maestoso massiccio dolomitico della Presolana.

A Colere si può sciare dai 1050 mt ai 2250 mt ed è una delle poche stazioni lombarde con piste omologate per gare internazionali. Bergamo offre due ottimi comprensori sciistici: quello della Val Brembana e quello della Val Seriana/ Val di Scalve; 130 km di piste baciate dal sole per una vacanza “bianca” imperdibile!

Curiosità / Curious facts: La Valle di Scalve non è solo sci e sport invernali ma racchiude storia e tradizioni, cultura e splendidi paesaggi. Da scoprire assolutamente la caratteristica “Via Mala”, una strada antica scavata nella roccia.

Lungo il percorso incontrerete incisioni rupestri e romane, sorgenti e acque termali e soprattutto dei panorami incantati. La strada nasce in una ricca zona mineraria che conduce alla storica Miniera di Schilpario. Qui è possibile seguire vari percorsi museali e, oltre a rivivere l’atmosfera del passato, si viene a conoscenza dell’essenza e autenticità della Valle.

The Scalve Valley is not just a skiing and winter sports destination, but also a treasure trove of history and traditions, culture and splendid scenery. An attraction that must not be missed is the characteristic “Via Mala”, an ancient road carved into the rock which features ancient Roman and rock engravings, springs and thermal waters, and above all enchanting views. The road is found in a rich mining area that leads to the historic Schilpario Mine. The mine offers various museum tours and, in addition to reliving the atmosphere of the past, visitors can get a taste of the essence and authenticity of the valley.

Sono come perle, grandi o piccole, in una collana che impreziosisce tutto il territorio, e non ce n’è una che sia uguale all’altra. Gli antichi borghi sono una caratteristica del territorio italiano e la provincia di Bergamo non è da meno. Un tempo la vita delle singole comunità si concentrava in questi nuclei, che avevano al loro centro la chiesa parrocchiale e immediatamente individuabili grazie al campanile che spicca al di sopra dei tetti. Un itinerario vero e proprio che colleghi i centri storici sul territorio bergamasco non esiste: è una presenza diffusa, al centro della quale non può non es6

In the past, the life of each community revolved around these districts, which had the parish church at their centre and were immediately recognisable by a bell tower that stood out above the roofs. They offer many old villages, some of which are more important than others, but all of which have a certain charm. In the Brembana Valley, a stop in the town of Zogno to follow the old road lined by sombre buildings, visit the ‘Museo della Valle’ (Museum of the Valley) and climb the monumental stairs that lead to the parish church is a must. Continuando verso l’Alta Valle Seriana ecco Gromo, con la piazzetta medievale, le antiche chiese e il compatto castello la cui torre domina tutto il borgo. musica/music (Settembre-Dicembre/September-December 2010) Bergamo Musica Festival Seconda tournée in Giappone per il Bergamo Musica Festival Gaetano Donizetti, Stagione lirica e di balletto del Teatro Donizetti, dopo quella del 2007, durante la quale le produzioni bergamasche furono viste e applaudite da un pubblico numerosissimo: circa 30.000 spettatori. La tournée toccherà dodici Città: Osaka, Kobe, Iwakuni, Tokyo, Yokohama, Hamamatsu, Nagoya, Tsu/Mie, Musashino, Morioka, Chigasaki, Yokosuka. Diciassette le rappresentazioni: otto della verdiana Traviata e nove dell’Elisir d’amore di Gaetano Donizetti, produzioni che il pubblico del Donizetti ha potuto apprezzare nell’ottobre 2009.

L’appuntamento sarà poi con la quinta edizione del Bergamo Musica Festival Gaetano Donizetti, da settembre a dicembre 2010. In programma Poliuto di Donizetti, Amor ingegnoso di Mayr, Don Pasquale ancora di Donizetti, Rigoletto di Verdi, Don Giovanni di Mozart e il balleto Il lago dei cigni di Tchaikovskij.

Ancora una volta Bergamo si trasformerà in Città della Musica, coinvolgendo i luoghi donizettiani della Città Bassa e della Città Alta: da Casa Natale ai Teatri Donizetti e Sociale.

Bergamo Music Festival A second tournée in Japan has been organised by the Bergamo Gaetano Donizetti Music Festival, the opera and ballet season of the Donizetti Theatre, after the first in 2007, during which Bergamask productions were seen and applauded by a large audience of 30,000 people. The tour will visit twelve cities: Osaka, Kobe, Iwakuni, Tokyo, Yokohama, Hamamatsu, Nagoya, Tsu/Mie, Musashino, Morioka, Chigasaki and Yokosuka. There will be seventeen performances: eight of Verdi’s Traviata and nine of Elisir d’amore by Gaetano Donizetti, which Donizetti enthusiasts enjoyed in October 2009.

The fifth Bergamo Gaetano Donizetti Music Festival will be held from September to December 2010. The programme includes Poliuto by Donizetti, Amor ingegnoso by Mayr, Don Pasquale again by Donizetti, Rigoletto by Verdi, Don Giovanni

by Mozart and the ballet Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky. Once more Bergamo will be transformed into a city of music, and all places associated with Donizetti in both Upper and Lower Bergamo will be involved, from the house where he was born to the Donizetti Theatre and the Teatro Sociale (Social Theatre). www.donizetti.org

Bergamo becomes a city of international cinema in February and March. fiera/trade fair (15-16/03/2010) cooking expo 2010 - Polo fieristico di Bergamo Una cabina di regia che valorizzi il territorio attraverso l’arte della cucina e della ristorazione, in una logica di filiera agroalimentare che va dalla produzione agricola, all’industria fino ad arrivare alla distribuzione. è questo l’obiettivo di Promozione del Territorio, l’Associazione presieduta da Carlo Spinetti e promossa da Camera di Commercio, AscomConfcommercio, Confindustria, Ente Fiera Promoberg e Bergamo Fiera Nuova. “L’Associazione si propone come un laboratorio vivente in grado di catalizzare le istanze volte a sostenere il turismo che provengono dall’intera società civile afferma il presidente Spinetti - l’obiettivo è quello di mettere fondamenta sempre più salde alla ricchezza del patrimonio enogastronomico italiano”. La selezione si svolgerà in Fiera dal 15 al 16 marzo 2010 nell’ambito della prima edizione di Cooking Expo, manifestazione dedicata all’alta ristorazione. cooking expo 2010 - Bergamo Trade Fair Centre A management committee that valorises the region through the art of cuisine and catering in the context of an agri-food chain that ranges from agricultural production through to industry and distribution. This is the objective of ‘Promozione del Territorio’, an association chaired by Carlo Spinetti and promoted by the Chamber of Commerce, AscomConfcommercio (retailers’ association), Confindustria (industries association), Ente Fiera Promoberg (trade fair organisation) and Bergamo Fiera Nuova (Bergamo Trade Fair).

“The Association is a living workshop that implements decisions aimed at supporting the tourism that arises from civil society” states the chairman Spinetti.

Passeggiando tra arte e storia Strolling among art and history di/by Pino Capellini Per le sue dimensioni contenute si può andare alla scoperta di Bergamo Alta con una piacevole passeggiata su un percorso ad anello che può richiedere anche solo un paio di ore; una mezza giornata se si desidera visitare alcuni dei monumenti più importanti e sostare in un accogliente locale per una pausa di riposo. La funicolare che sale da viale Vittorio Emanuele è il mezzo più rapido per entrare nell’antica città offrendo al tempo stesso, nella salita, inconsueti scorci panoramici e vedute sull’imponente cerchia di mura. Usciti dalla stazione della funicolare, il centro storico si presenta con la singolare Upper Bergamo, because of its small size, can be easily discovered in only a couple of hours, or half a day if you wish to visit some of the most important monuments and stop in one of the welcoming bars or restaurants for a break. l’incrocio e un breve tratto in salita tra altri negozi e bar (spicca un caratteristico locale storico) ci si affaccia a sinistra sul sorprendente spazio di piazza Vecchia, la più importante testimonianza lasciata dal Rinascimento nel tessuto della città medievale; al di là dell’ampio portico del palazzo della Ragione dominato dalla torre civica, si apre un’altra piazza, con il Duomo, la Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, la Cappella Colleoni e il Battistero. Questo spazio, con i suoi monumenti e i locali pubblici invitano a sostare un po’. Ma se si vuole proseguire, attraversata la piazza e continuando in asse col percorso finora seguito ecco l’inizio di via Colleoni, tra edifici ciascuno dei quali ha una storia da raccontare. A sinistra la facciata del Teatro Sociale, opera dell’architetto Leopoldo Pollak (1803), a destra, al civico 9, il portale quattrocentesco di marmo d’accesso a quello che resta della casa del condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni. On the other side of the square and beyond the spacious arcade of Palazzo della Ragione and the Civic Tower lies another square housing the Duomo, Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Colleoni Chapel and Baptistery. This square, with its monuments and public buildings, needs some time to explore. If however you wish to continue your walk, cross the square back to Via Gombito and continue along Via Colleoni. This street is lined with buildings, each of which has a story to tell. On the left is the façade of the Teatro Sociale (Social Theatre), the work of the architect Leopoldo Pollak (1803); on the right, at number 9, stands a fifteenth-century marble doorway leading to what remains of the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni’s house. The road opens into the light and spacious Piazza Mascheroni, built in the sixteenth century to hold the city’s market. versando il cortile della Cittadella per raggiungere Colle Aperto da dove partono gli autobus che riportano a Bergamo Bassa. Noi vi consigliamo un altro suggestivo percorso per tornare alla stazione della funicolare. Dal lato sud-ovest di piazza Mascheroni un vicolo in salita (via San Salvatore) vi consente di imboccare (svoltando a destra e subito dopo a sinistra) la via Arena, sicuramente la più suggestiva dell’antica città. A destra l’alto muro del monastero di Santa Grata, interrotto dall’ingresso al monastero stesso e, più avanti, dal portale barocco della chiesa; a sinistra il Palazzo della Misericordia con il Museo Donizettiano. La via sbuca sulla piazza caratterizzata dalla presenza del portale meridionale della Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, dove è custodita, tra l’altro, la tomba di Gaetano Donizetti, il grande musicista. Superato lo slargo, inizia la via Donizetti: più avanti, sulla destra, sorge il palazzo dove morì il celebre compositore (come ricordato da una lapide sulla facciata). Il fondo alla via ecco di nuovo la Piazza Mercato della Scarpe e l’ingresso alla funicolare. La bella passeggiata è finita.

Aperto from where buses head towards Lower Bergamo. We however recommend another interesting route leading back to the funicular station. From the south-west side of Piazza Mascheroni, an alleyway (Via San Salvatore) climbs up towards Via Arena (after turning right and then immediately left), a road that is certainly one of the most beautiful in the city. On the right stands the high wall of the Monastery of Santa Grata, which is interrupted by the monastery itself and, further ahead, by the Baroque gateway of the church; on the left lies Palazzo della Misericordia and the Donizetti Museum. This road leads to a square overlooked by the southern doorway of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, which houses the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti, the great musician. Via Donizetti begins beyond this open space, and further ahead, on the right, the building where the famous composer died can be seen (a plaque on the facade commemorates this fact). Piazza Mercato della Scarpe and the entrance to the funicular railway lie at the end of this road. Our beautiful walk has come to an end.

Bergamo Città Bassa Lower Town Come per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, Porta Nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, affiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la via Tasso e, a ovest, la via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.

In via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il palazzo della Provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il Teatro Donizetti affiancato dal monumento al grande musicista.

Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta. I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni genere, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie.

Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, via San Tommaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’Accademia Carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittoriche italiane ed europee. Di fronte la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è utilizzata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposizioni permanenti. Non molto lontano, nel borgo di Pignolo, il Museo Bernareggi d’Arte Sacra.

Porta Nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lower Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demolished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Bergamo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.

Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the Provincial Authority Building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone.

The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of San Bartolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the Donizetti Theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were established along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias.

Along via San Tommaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century building housing the Accademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The Bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

Città Alta Upper Town Piazza Vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Bergamo, è il naturale punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazione di arrivo si esce subito sulla Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di via Gombito-via Colleoni, la strada principale che attraversava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la via Gombito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.

Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza.

Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla torre civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del Palazzo della Ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo. Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il Battistero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la Basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi trecenteschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di Gaetano Donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla Rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monastero di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

Piazza Vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop.

We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the funicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town. e se ne avvantaggiano sicuramente gli sciatori di altre nazioni, si aggiunge il fatto che l’aeroporto di Bergamo-Orio al Serio si trova a non più di un’ora (in auto o in pullman) dalle piste della Bergamasca.

Si può quasi dire che si scende dall’aereo e si possono subito calzare gli sci. E allora, da dove incominciamo?

Non c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta perché le due principali valli bergamasche, la valle Brembana e la valle Seriana, sono dotate di una buona rete viaria che consente di arrivare alle stazioni sciistiche molto rapidamente. Incominciamo dalla valle Brembana che ha in Foppolo il suo centro d’eccellenza: assieme agli impianti delle vicine località di San Simone e di Carona, con cui costituisce il comprensorio Brembo Ski, offre ottimi impianti e 120 chilometri di piste. Tra le novità della stagione il nuovo tracciato della pista “Nif” sul monte Valgussera, che potrà essere utilizzata per gare nazionali e internazionali. Sempre in valle Brembana,

You are certainly spoilt for choice because the two main Bergamask valleys – the Brembana Valley and the Seriana Valley – offer an excellent road network that enables you to arrive very rapidly at the ski resorts. We’ll begin in the Brembana Valley, which has Foppolo as its centre of excellence. Together with the nearby resorts of San Simone and Carona, which combined make up the Brembo Ski Area, Foppolo offers excellent lifts and 120 km of runs. One of the new features this season is a new section of piste: the “Nif” on Mount Valgussera, which will be used for national and international races. Again in the Brembana Valley, Piazzatorre offers newly furbished ski lifts and even the opportunity to try ice hockey.

Piazzatorre si presenta con impianti di risalita rinnovati e c’è anche la possibilità di praticare l’hockey su ghiaccio. Da Valtorta si possono infine raggiungere i Piani di Bobbio, centro sciistico della Valsassina che proprio sul versante bergamasco offre le piste migliori. In tutto la valle mette a disposizione oltre 40 impianti di risalita, cui si aggiungono ottimi anelli per il fondo immersi nella natura e con grandiosi paesaggi. Si va dal centro di sci nordico della Conca dell’Alben, a Oltre il Colle, ai percorsi di Valtorta Piani di Bobbio, di Branzi Gardata, di Roncobello, del Monte Avaro.

In valle Seriana spicca la “palestra dello sci” della Presolana. Gli impianti sono l’ideale per le famiglie con bambini e per i principianti, mentre le vaste distese del Monte Pora sono preferite da chi vuole godersi intere giornate di sport e divertimento in piena luce e sole. Si può anche sciare nella conca, circondata dalle fitte abetaie degli Spiazzi di Gromo, con discese in grado di soddisfare gli sciatori più esigenti ma anche i principianti. In valle Seriana numerose le piste per lo sci da fondo, tra cui quelli della Spessa a Clusone, della piana della Montagnina (Gandino), di Onore e di Bondione. La Ski Area 2200 di Colere in valle di Scalve, dominata dal bellissimo massiccio Presolana, chiamato anche “Piccole Dolomiti”, con i suoi impianti consente agli sciatori di salire fino alla quota di 2.500 metri in un ambiente unico. Tra le novità la pista di ski cross e boarder cross, con curve paraboliche e salti che si snodano per più di 400 metri. A Schilpario, nel cuore della pineta che è tra le più vaste della Lombardia, si scia sulle piste di Epolo, ma la località è nota soprattutto per praticare lo sci nordico. La Pista degli Abeti, che incomincia appena fuori dal paese, si snoda per oltre 10 chilometri lungo un tracciato che offre varie possibilità: dall’anello “Baby” alla pista agonistica. In soli 5 minuti, passando attraverso un tunnel scavato nelle mura venete, vi ritroverete nel cuore della città antica. Se poi volete salire ancora più su, potete prendere la panoramica funicolare che da Porta S. Alessandro conduce al colle di S. Vigilio.
