Today’s game

Today sees The Nomads start our pre-season a little earlier than usual as we welcome one of the most successful sides in Romanian football to the Deeside Stadium as Dinamo Bucharest take to the pitch here at Coleg Cambria. “The Red Dogs” have won no less than 18 Romanian Legia 1 Titles, 13 Romanian Cups and 2 Romanian Supercups. They were the first side to reach the European Cup semi-finals in the 1983-84 season where they lost out to Liverpool 3-1 on aggregate with Welsh legend Ian Rush netting two goals in the second leg. Since then, Dinamo have gone on to make over 60 appearances in the Champions’ League, and 88 appearances in the Europa League. Along with other games, they’ve played over 175 games in European Competition in total. A far cry from The Nomads, however our close-season has seen us make some big steps in the right direction in our own right, signing Jay Colbeck and Jamie Rainford to partner Gary O’Toole up front, while keeping hold of a number of our key players including Terry McCormick and Michael Burns. Today will be the first time that The Nomads face European opposition, but won’t be the last, as we welcome Ludogorets Razgrad later this week, and hopefully we can start to become used to European competition and perhaps this time next season, it might not be just friendlies that we are having with European opposition!

News Article

2014-15 Fixtures Announced The fixtures for the 2014/15 season in the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League were announced today, and The Nomads start the season at a ground that was favourable last season as we visit Prestatyn Town. Bank Holiday Monday then sees us host Carmarthen Town, before we head to our former first team coach’s new home as Chris Herbert’s Cefn Druids host The Nomads on Friday 29th August. We will once again have our Christmas double header against Airbus, and hopefully it should go ahead as planned this season, as Airbus will have their new 3G pitch in place for our pre-season friendly with them.

New arrivals at Deeside Stadium

Nomads sign Wrexham starlet Colbeck The Nomads are pleased to announce the arrival of Jay Colbeck at Deeside Stadium. A product of the Wrexham Academy, Jay played for the youth and reserve sides at The Racecourse before making his senior debut against Kettering Town, scoring twice in the process. At Wrexham, Jay scored four goals in 11 starts between 2011 and 2013. Following knee surgery at the start of the 2013-14 season, Jay spent part of the season on loan at Welsh Premier side Bangor City, scoring 1 goal from 4 starts and 3 sub appeareances. On the move, Jay said; “I am delighted to have signed for The Nomads. Mark [McGregor] sold the club to me straight away with his aims for the season and the way he wants the team to play. I can’t wait for the season to get started now and hopefully I can score a lot of goals and contribute to a successful season for the team.” On a seperate note, The Nomads can confirm that Mike Hayes has left Deeside to return to Bala Town. We wish Mike all the best and thank him for his goals last season. 8

Rainford arrives at Deeside The Nomads are pleased to announce the signing of 26 year old striker Jamie Rainford. Jamie arrives at the club following spells at Chester, Marine FC and Halifax Town where he once made an FA Cup appearance against Charlton Athletic. Jamie has also played for many other lower league sides including AFC Fylde, Colwyn Bay and Prescot Cables. On his move, Jamie said: “I am delighted to have signed for The Nomads. From the moment I spoke to the gaffer, he didn’t really have to sell the club to me, but once he told me his ideas and ambitions for next season, I knew it was where I wanted to be playing my football. I’m looking forward to playing attacking football and creating and scoring goals is whetting my appetite - I can’t wait to get going. It has given me the motivation to make sure I hit the ground running when the new season starts. It’s exciting times for me at the start of a new footballing chapter with The Nomads!” Director of Football Mark McGregor said: “I am delighted to have a new and exciting forward here with us and he will add to the fire power we’ve currently got.” The Nomads v FC Dinamo București

Green’s piece

GREEN’S PIECE

Club secretary Trevor Green gives his views Good Evening Welcome back to the Deeside Stadium for the opening of a new season. 2014/15 promises to be a very good one for ourselves. Having been scared to death by just how close we came to the catastrophe of relegation last season, we are determined never to let that happen again. A thorough review has been conducted and we have made serious investments into the three main areas of operation. In terms of facilities we have made huge strides towards the creation of a soccer centre of excellence with partnerships close to fruition with Flintshire County Council, The Football Association of Wales and Coleg Cambria. Hopefully we will soon be underway on a major development that will give the development arm of the club the facilities it needs to make the next step up. Our Academy has expanded even further, fresh from winning the National titles at U16 and national runners up at U14 with Welsh championships at U12 and U16 in Futsal we are now able to offer a full time football course at Coleg Cambria to elite young players. They will compete against elite college sides from England and Wales at the same time as offering high quality academic qualifications to the participants. Many of us look forward to seeing how last years U15’s do as Academy cup players, was the 2-0 win over Athletico Madrid - a one off, or are they really that good? Time will tell. But of course, it’s the first team performance that a club is judged by. We went on a remarkable spring run to save ourselves last year with late season wins over Port Talbot, Aberystwyth and Airbus. We need to carry that on into this campaign. Mark has been supported by our owner to retain those who came in to such great effect last January and to add a select few new faces to ensure we are battling for Europe and not to avoid the drop into the Cymru Alliance at the next season’s end. We can welcome strikers Jamie Rainsford (from Marine) and Jay Colbeck (from Wrexham) to the club. They have signed by the time I write, and tonight you will see a couple more who will have done so in the time between. Of last year’s team only Simon Everall (to Conwy) and Mike Hayes (to Bala) have left. Sean Smith returned to Wrexham and was rewarded for the success of his loan spell here with a professional contract. Russ Courtney is away playing in Tasmania until late September and a couple have yet to agree terms with 12 The Nomads v FC Dinamo București

us, however Mike Sharples has recovered from a season long injury, and the Ruthin based defender will be like a new signing on his return. We will also be hoping to welcome a new Head Coach tonight. Mark remains as Director of Football and is very much in charge. Jay remains as Head of Development and has the college scheme to deliver as well as his other duties, so we have gone out to seek for a suitably experienced and enthusiastic new man to take over from Chris Herbert (now at Cefn Druids). We are confident we have our first choice coming on board, a man who holds the cherished Pro license to give us the qualification necessary for us to gain the European License and compete in European competition at this time next year. So we couldn’t get into Europe by the front door for summer 2014. Here we are bursting through the back door! The Nomads verses Dinamo Bucharest and The Nomads verses PFC Ludoorets - our Welsh Europa and Champions’ League qualifiers would have to win a few rounds to get ties like these - it still seems unreal, but here we are. We wish our guests from Romania and Bulgaria the warmest of welcomes. We hope they are enjoying their stay with De Vere Hotels and that the excellent programme they are participating in is being enjoyed. We are delighted to be the right people in the right place and at the right time to give them a football component. Little did we know when Jay signed up to a partnership with the premier hotel chain to provide all of our social events and to be our official supplier of venues, that this fringe benefit would fall into place. We welcome the players, staff and officers of our giant visitors. We hope we can be competitive and be able to hold up our heads at the end of the programme. The magnitude of the task facing us is that our Luke Holden’s last European experience was playing in Rhyl’s 8-0 defeat at Partizan Belgrade (11-0 on aggregate). Ludogorets did the double over Partizan last year in the Champions League! Finally, a topic that can’t be ignored. We were amazed when Bala and ourselves were accused of match fixing. It was bad enough that we lost 7-0 to my former club and those that stood with me that night at Maes Tegid would know just how severely I was taunted - it was not pleasant. If anyone had seen the faces of our players coming off the pitch they would have thought that the accusation that we hadn’t tried as laughable as I did. Evidently this self-appointed and attention seeking group of Belgians based their claim on an assertion that lots of people in Asia had been betting on us to win and had changed bets at the last moment. Betting on us to win?! We were at the lowest point of a historically low run of consecutive defeats. We had been ‘giant-killed’ at Caersws in the Welsh Cup six days earlier. The pitch was so heavy that our little light players were bogged down and unable to match the physically superior Bala behemoths. We had an injury crisis and seven Academy players were in the fourteen. Who were these people? Did they change their bets after consultation with a psychiatrist? I spend a bit of time with this group of players - I know them - if anyone asked them to give less than their best then I’m sure the answer would consist of two words with the second one being off! Enjoy tonight and Saturday. I will be here tonight but will be in North Devon on Saturday. Big thanks to Nick for organising our match officials for us once again. Thanks to Colin for the Medical cover, to Deeside Athletics Club for backing us in this, and to Emma and the Stadium groundstaff for their invaluable support. Enjoy the game, Trevor The Nomads v FC Dinamo București

The Nomads v FC Dinamo București

A view from the stand

You don’t need telling again that tonight you’re witnessing a big night in Nomads history. Dinamo Bucharest play here tonight in what many are quick to point out is only a friendly match, however those closer to the club know this is a sign of nomads hopes and directions to move towards. At this year’s Welsh Premier League AGM, the fact that now 10 of the 12 clubs in this league have played in European Competition was rightly flaunted, but it was us who were at the expense having not yet reached European competition in this Welsh Premier League along with Newtown. Tonight we show our ambition to push ourselves through to Europe with our already impressive contacts evident with tonight’s fixture and enhanced reputation throughout the continent with the Academy ever flourishing last season, defeating Atletico Madrid 2-0. Each team knows the importance of European competition with the likes of Bala and Prestatyn reaping the benefits it brings in recent years. We’ve shown we have the attitude to push for European competition by being a point away from the top six two seasons ago and with last season our turnaround to avoid relegation a sign of the spirit installed within the squad, which will today include new signings such as Jamie Rainford and Jay Colbeck. Of course we can’t claim we’re heading into the Europa League for sure this season and not because of this game, but we’re putting the right things in place to ensure at some point in the future Nomads can grace further afield than Welsh Football. To clubs like us the first few qualifying rounds of European Football really is the holy grail and everyone’s main motive. Tonight you’ll get a taste of what we want to come, with a great atmosphere built up that should continue through to the many other attractive friendly matches we have in place and into the 2014/15 season. Many may be here for the first time today, so don’t make this a one-time thing as there’s much more to offer after Bucharest with Bulgaria’s Ludogorets on Saturday with Celtic Nation and Tranmere Rovers to come. More recently we can confirm that we will take on old and recurring rivals Rhyl FC on the 18th August in the word cup 1st round. That’s right, we’re really not stopping much this season. Away from just our matches the NomadsCast podcast is going well with plenty more episodes soon to be available. Through these the Nomads word will hopefully spread more, quicker and faster around the Welsh Prem scene. We’re just one of the clubs hitting the airwaves with Newtown and Aberystwyth already with their own methods of broadcast. Do get in touch with any comments on the Podcasts as we hope they will really take off. Sit back and enjoy the atmosphere tonight as for the first time, European giants come to Deeside. Return after tonight’s match and look ahead with us towards another action packed season for Nomads.

Dinamo Bucharest’s Club History Fotbal Club Dinamo București is one of the two most successful football teams in Romania, having won 18 Romanian Liga I titles, 13 Romanian Cups and 2 Romanian Supercups. They became the first Romanian team to reach the European Champions’ Cup semifinals in 1983–84. Founded in 1948, Dinamo has spent its entire history in Liga I, the top league of Romanian football. The team’s traditional home colours are white and red. The current crest is a modified version of the one adopted in the 1998. Dinamo Bucharest’s home ground is the 15,032-seater Dinamo Stadium in Bucharest’s city centre, where it has played since 1951. The club’s biggest rivals are Steaua București, and matches between the two teams are commonly referred to as “The Eternal Derby”. Dinamo was founded on 14 May 1948, when “Unirea Tricolor MAI” — newly entered, in January 1948, under the umbrella of the Communist regime’s Internal Affairs Ministry — merged with “Ciocanul București”. The sporting club represented the above-mentioned institution. The “Dinamo” name was used for the very first time on 1 May 1948. Nevertheless, the real debut of Dinamo was on the 1947-48 Divizia A edition (finishing 8th). Some of the team’s players were Ambru, Angelo Niculescu, Teodorescu, Siclovan, Bartha, Sârbu. In 1955, Dinamo won their first championship. With Angelo Niculescu as head coach, Dinamo impressed mainly in the offensive, with an attack formed by Ene I, Neaga and Suru. The defense, with players like Băcuț I, Băcuț II, Szoko, Călinoiu, was the best in the championship – only 19 goals received. In the fall of 1956, the team make its debut in the European Champion Clubs’ Cup (competition created a year before). Dinamo was the first Romanian team to play in the European competitions. The debut game was played on 26 August 1956, in front of 32,000 spectators. Dinamo defeated Galatasaray with 3–1. In the second leg, Dinamo lost in Istanbul with 1–2, and moved forward. The following years, Dinamo met famous teams in Europe, such as Real Madrid (a team with Di Stefano and Gento - The game played in Bucharest took place at „23 August” Stadium, and established a new record for this arena: 100,000 spectators), Inter Milan and Feyenoord: 0–3 and 0–2. In 1973, in the European Cup, Dinamo surpass Northern Ireland’s Crusaders Belfast. The 11–0 home game against Northern Ireland’s team is still the biggest margin of victory in the history of the European Cup. The autumn of 1983–84 was going to represent a valuable step into the international arena. The 20 The Nomads v FC Dinamo București

“European Champions Cup campaign” started with the Finnish team, Kuusysi Lahti (1–0 and 3–0). The second round pushes Dinamo against the current champion, Hamburger SV – team of Stein, Kalz and Magath. At Bucharest, Augustin, Multescu and Orac score for 3–0.The thrilling second leg finishes 3–2 (goals Talnar and Multescu). In order to accede in the semifinals of CCE, Dinamo had to defeat another top team: Dinamo Minsk, with Aleinikov, Zigmanatovich and Gurinovich. The first leg was 1–1 (Rednic equalizing in the 87th minute), and it was followed by a 1–0 victory at Bucharest (with Augustin scoring). Dinamo was the first Romanian team to reach the European Champions Cup semifinals, where it met Liverpool FC. Dinamo lost 1–0 at Anfield and 2–1 in Bucharest, as Liverpool progressed to the 1984 European Cup Final. In 1986 Dinamo wins the Cup against Steaua, the team that only with a few days before won the European Cup. In the summer of 1990, Dinamo – with Mircea Lucescu as coach – conquers a new national title, the 13th. Also the team wins the Cup final, against Steaua: 6–4. But the Romanian revolution from 1989 opened the doors for the Romanian footballers to leave and play abroad and Dinamo lost almost its entire team, thus a downfall regarding the results came the following years. Dinamo managed to win the title in 1992, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2007, but failed to reach the final phases of the European competitions. In 2013, the team changes its ownership. Businessman Ionuț Negoiță bought the club and promised to revive the golden years.
