Nomads Academy product Rhys Healey joined Cardiff City in January 2013
What to do if you are approached by a professional club... The Nomads have always been very much a development academy, looking to push players onto the highest levels possible. 28 players from the Academy have been signed by professional clubs in just five years which is testament to our scouting and coaching. As a further 10+ players have been offered trials in the last two months, we felt it important to reiterate how we recommend parents and players manage these approaches. All players signed on with The Nomads Academy are registered with both the Club and the FAW. Should a player be invited to trial or sign with another club, certain protocols have to take place, in the best interests of all parties. Technically, The Nomads Academy should receive an email, confirming interest in signing/trialing any of our registered players, however, we are flexible, so a telephone call to Jay Catton on 07952 646463 would suffice if people don’t have the time to send an email. Jay can then liaise with the interested club, the player’s Age Group coach and of course the player and parent. This is to ensure that all parties are aware of the length of trial and the impact on their Nomads’ training and match schedules. If a player simply disappears for six weeks or so, the Age Group coach could likely replace the player in the team/squad and the player on trial may not be able to rejoin the club. To stress, this is not law, it is 4

best practice. So, to re-emphasize this message: What to do when asked to trial at a professional club directly from a scout or club? As a parent, if approached by any pro club, you must inform Director of Football Jay Catton immediately via e mail on jay.catton@the-nomads.co.uk or by telephone on 07952 646463 so that the Club are aware. We can cross reference this with any formal approach. Why is it Important that The Nomads Academy are Informed? It is vital that we are informed so we can inform all age group specific staff of the approach and allows us to speak directly with parents and players as to whether this is a good opportunity and progression from The Nomads Academy. We can also aid a clear communication line with the club the player is trialing at so we are aware of their progress at the trialling academy, as well as areas that The Nomads Academy could work on more with the player to give them the best chance of success at gaining success during their trial. How long should a trial last for? A trial should last no more than six weeks. When you begin a trial process at an official academy under EPPP guidelines you will sign a contract on first day stating the exact six week period you are under trial. This can be cut short if club wishes but can not go over these agreed dates. After the six weeks the club must then offer you the player a contract or release you. We as Nomads Academy, will also be informed when your trial period has started and when it will finish so we are all clear. Players have previously spent months, even over a year traveling to clubs in their academies or even development centres and no decisions have been made. Vital you are aware decision must be made within six week time frame. This could potentially save parents a lot of money in fuel and travelling if you go over this agreed date and then not taken on. Am I encouraged to trial at Professional clubs and will it jeopardise my child’s place in Nomads Academy if he is unsuccessful? Absolutely players are encouraged to trial and aim to use Nomads Academy as a stepping stone into professional football. A six week trial even if unsuccessful is an experience in a different environment which is a success in itself. It is vital that players view it as a success and long-term experience and not a disappointment if not taken on. Nomads Academy will work with players during their trial periods and if unsuccessful the player is immediately taken back in with ourselves, which is a great security to all players. If anyone has any further questions or concerns on above issue please don’t hesitate to contact Director of Football Jay Catton 07952 646463 jay.catton@the-nomads.co.uk. 5

Academy 1:1 sessions 2017
U8-U12 1:1 sessions every Thursday afternoon 4:15pm-5:00pm @ Deeside Leisure Centre The Nomads Academy in partnership with CBC 1-to-1 Football Training will be continuing our succesful program with all coaches from The Nomads Academy being run by U11 coach, Chris Brooks. The 1:1 programe will run from 4:15pm-5:00pm at Deeside Leisure Centre and will be directly before Coerver Curriculum sessions starting at 5:00pm. This gives players the opportunity for just over two quality hours of training if they wish to take it up. Three pitches will run with a maximum of five players per pitch, so only 15 spaces per week are available, however this maybe extended to further pitches if keen interest and Nomads Academy Coaches are available. The cost for players is just ÂŁ5 per player which must be paid in cash to Chris Brooks on arrival. The 2017 curriculum of topics over the campaign include: - January/February Shooting/Finishing - March Defending (tackling/pressing/heading 1v1 2v1 2v2) - April Combination play/passing/free kicks After a hugely successful first six months of the program we wanted to boost this addition again for the academy. For those players interested you must contact Chris Brooks via email on chris.brooks@the-nomads.co.uk. The last chance to book will be 6:00pm on the Tuesday before a Thursday session. This is non-mandatory but it is a great opportunity for players to gain more individual focused training with different Nomads Academy Coaches in a 45 minute period which leads then into team Coerver Training. Again, another progression for the academy and the key word is opportunity for those players who wish to take advantage and utilise for their own individual development. Five players in particular who have committed to this extra program have seen huge gains in their personal development and within the academy highlighting the quality of this 1:1 program.

News from Quay in The Community The month of January has seen a massive step forward for the community arm of the club. Head of community Lee Breeze has been able to bring into the team Ben Nash, who has been appointed Head Coach. January has also seen us build and grown new partnerships. We have joined with BGC and Us Girls who will help us grow and develop our girls only sessions. This shows our commitment to the female side of the game and these partnerships will help it grow into something, we believe, that will be very exciting. We have also had Jump 2 It be confirmed as a partner. This fantastic link with the trampoline park in Deeside will help us provide rewards for all participants across all programmes. Last but not least, as some of you may of see the article in the Evening Leader (27th Jan 2017) we have joined in partnership with Flintshire County Council National Exercise Referral Team (NERS) and the Sports Development department to create and deliver a Walking Football programme at Deeside Leisure Centre. We had our big launch event on Tuesday 24th January which was a massive success and had 16 players taking part in structured sessions and small sided games. All of these partnerships will be vital to us moving forward and are delighted to have them all on board. Now to our weekly children sessions. We are currently delivering sessions in six primary schools across Flintshire where we deliver to both boys and girls of ages 5-11. Ben Nash and Jamie Wynne have been delivering these sessions to such a high standard - the children are developing week-to-week but most importantly, loving playing the beautiful game. As mentioned earlier, we also have a girls only session running. Jamie has been doing a great job and has picked up where Leighton Sumner left off. These sessions are growing all the time and with the partnerships we have with BGC and Us girls we are excited to see how they develop further. Over the next few months we as a community have new and exciting programmes ahead of us. Programmes such as Soccer Tots, u5 football in our community club house, schools and junior league festivals and much much more. Keep an eye out on February nomads news for full updates. If anyone would like any more information on the community programmes please contact Head of community Lee Breeze on Lee.breeze@the-nomads.co.uk

The Nomads Academy Structure Our pyramid is a clear example of the pathway into gap Connah’s Quay Nomads First team in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League and potentially the UEFA Europa League. It is a clear goal and pathway, which is accessible, and should be the aim of all Nomads Academy footballers. At our mini phase, the focus is very much technical with a huge emphasis on Nomads Moves and our Coerver Curriculum on Thursday evenings at Deeside Leisure Centre. The youth phase sees a progression year for our under 12s who, although in the FAW Academy Cup, are still very much in the mini phase with a big emphases still on technical-based development, and still work under our Coerver Curriculum. Our youth phase, in particular U13-U16, is a more physical and tactically based program. These age group players will play in a Nomads Club way that has been filtered down from our first team. Our senior phase starts off with our Coleg Cambria Academy Scholars. Those lucky enough to progress from our under 16s to our full time football and academic program will train up to five times a week with college games each Wednesday across the North of England. Players can choose to study any course or A Level on top of football, but must ensure that all work is up to date and have a 95% attendance in order to train or play. From our Academy Scholars, those players are then selected for our under 18 and 19 sides who play Saturdays and Sundays. Th firt progression for our under 18s is playing in the mens Senior Clwyd East League with the final progression of the Senior phase being our under 19s who play in the Welsh Premier North Wales Development League. A further addition to the football club which will be announced more in the coming weeks, is our Elite Development Program. This will be made up of eight to ten 18-23 year olds who will be full time professional footballers and be part of the first team squad. As the club look to make the transition from part time to full time football at first team level, this is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to make it in the professional game. The First Team is the pinnacle and should be the aim for all of our academy players. To play in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League for academy players like Rhys Healey and Ryan Edwards gained them senior transfers to professional clubs. As well as this, the opportunity to play in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League which is televised every week, a national league and potentially offers players the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League. A clear pathway for all of our academy players to make it as high as possible with gap Connah’s Quay Nomads Football Club.

Academy Pathway to UK University or American Colleges We take a look at a former Nomads Academy player Thomas Bibby and his journey on our program, which has led him from Nomads Academy under 11s to studying a Sports Management Degree at San Antonio Texas College. Bibby joined The Nomads Academy U11 side back in 2008 - the following season, the Club only operated three teams at that point being U12, U14 and U16 who played in the Academy Cup. In the 09/10 season Thomas represented our U12 team who made it to the national semi finals of the Academy Cup, only to be knocked out by CPD Porthmadog who went on to win the National trophy. 2010/11 season Thomas played for our under 14s, playing up a year, along with a number of other U13 academy players. The benefits of playing a year up showed when Thomas was selected for the Welsh National North side and represented them in the Cymru Cup in Aberystwyth. The following U14 season saw The Nomads finish fifth, failing to make the top four but Thomas gained valuable football experiences in trials at Oldham Athletic and Tranmere Rovers. Across all of Bibby’s youth development at U12-U16, he also represented Flint High School, the county of Flintshire and his local junior league team of Shotton Steel. The 2012/13 campaign was a development season with Thomas again playing up for the under 16s in the academy cup on numerous occasions.
14
NOMAD S ACAD NEWSL EMY ETTER FEBR UARY 2017
The 2013/14 season for Thomas truly was one to remember as, along with the U16s that season, went on to win the National Academy Futsal Cup in Cardiff and National Academy Cup in Newtown in the same season. An achievement which is still yet to be done by and academy in Wales at the under 16 age group. In 2014, Thomas was one of the first ever Nomads Academy Scholarship players - training full time, he studied Level 3 Diploma in Sport at Coleg Cambria and in its first year the scholarship side won the North West College League and won the National Welsh Colleges Cup. He also earned a regular place in the U18s before making the progression to the U19s side early on in the season. On Friday 5th December 2014, Thomas made his first team and Welsh Premier League debut as a substitute away to The New Saints at just sixteen years of age. He went on to make a further four first team appearances that season. The 2015/16 campaign saw Thomas cement his place in our under 19s and was part of the side that made the Welsh Youth Cup Final against Swansea City. An achievement that had only ever been achieved by the club once before which was over seventy years ago. On our academy scholarship program, Thomas thrived on the field with the scholars claiming the National Welsh Colleges Cup for the second year on the bounce as well as winning a league and cup double for the A side. Representative honours came knocking and Thomas represented Wales Academy U18s, Welsh Schools and Welsh Colleges select squads. He went on to make another three first team appearances which included his first ever start at home to Bala Town in the Welsh Premier League. At the end of the 2015/16 season, Thomas also graduated from our Academy Scholars program with a Level 3 in Sport. With this qualification Thomas was able to go into higher level employment in sport or gain the opportunity to study further at university level. A testament to how our scholarship program works hand-in-hand with Coleg Cambria and with strict guidelines bringing the best out of players on the pitch and academically. Along with fellow Academy Scholars James Kilburn and Jack Chambers, Thomas took the decision to apply for an American Scholarship. After applying and attending open trial days Thomas was offered a part funded four year scholarship at the College of San Antonio Texas to study a degree in Sports Management. Through The Nomads Academy, Thomas had gained numerous great experiences on and off the football pitch which made him a great candidate for the college who plays in the top tier of the NCAA league. He has played multiple games in different states across the country and his side made the National Finals in Miami. A tremendous life experience and we wish Thomas all the best for his remaining years in USA. Thomas is fully enjoying his experience in America and when he returned home for his Christmas break trained The Nomads First Team also. A fantastic example of The Nomads Academy pathway and a route which is accessible to all players who share a clear focus and determination to success both on and off the football pitch.

Academy Pathway to English Premier League Football After looking into Thomas Bibby’s pathway to American university, we now take look at the pathway into the professional football game. As an academy which is also at the heart of the community it is great for us to help players into further education and America, but it is also great for our players who are solely focused on becoming a professional footballer that there is an opportunity through our system. We take a look at the journey of Rhys Healey who joined Cardiff City in 2013 and just two weeks ago made his first ever start in a Cardiff City shirt away at Reading. Healey joined The Nomads Academy at the end of the U15 season in 2008. He went onto represent our academy U16s the following season in the Academy Cup and played for the side, which were knocked out to Bangor City in the National Semi Finals. From here, Rhys moved on to play for the Academy’s U18s side scoring goals in both the U17 final vs Abergele and North Wales Coast final vs Llandudno Town. He also played for the U19s and moved into the first team where he made 10 appearances in one season in the Cymru Alliance and was part of the squad that won promotion back to the Welsh Premier League. Over the 2011-12 season Rhys trialled at a number of clubs including Manchester City and Stoke City but was unfortunately never taken on.
16
NOMAD S ACAD NEWSL EMY ETTER FEBR UARY 2017
The following season, he made a small number of U19s games in the first half of the season for the side then coached by Jay Catton and Mark Rowlands and was part of the youth team that went onto win the Welsh Premier Development League in the 2012-13 season. But this season in 2012-13 and having turned 18, Rhys had become an integral part of the first team and scored 12 league goals in the first half of the season, which earned him, a move and senior contract at Cardiff City. The Club have moved over 30 players on to professional clubs from the ages of U8-U16 and only one has ever been given a scholarship U17-U19 (Joe Brett at Tranmere Rovers) all other players have been released before this point and re-joined The Nomads Academy. Rhys is the only player, alongside Ryan Edwards (signed by TNS January 2013) who has been signed and gained a professional senior contract. A great example of how opportunities for professional senior football are still there beyond U16 and how much of an opportunity players can have if they make the The Nomads First Team through our academy system. After joining Cardiff in January 2013, Rhys made a number of appearances for Cardiff City U18s before progressing into their U21 side. In March 2014 he signed a new three year contract with the club. On 11 May 2014, he made his first-team debut, on the last day of the season, in a 2–1 defeat against Chelsea as a substitute in place of Craig Bellamy. In doing this he had completed a journey from The Nomads Academy U15s to Barclays Premier League Football. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season he was loaned out to Colchester United in League 1. Rhys made his debut, coming on as a substitute in the second half, and scored in a 3–0 win over Crewe Alexandra, which was followed with another in the next game, in a 4–2 loss against Preston North End. Having made ten appearances and scored four times, Healey’s loan spell with Colchester United was extended further until the end of the season. In the 2015/16 season Rhys enjoyed a loan spell at Dundee until January making seven appearances and scoring once. He was loaned back after an injury, which kept him out for the remainder of the season. This season, Rhys enjoyed the first half of the season on loan at Newport County scoring six goals from seventeen appearances. After being recalled last month by Cardiff City, Healey found himself placed on the bench for Cardiff City for the first time in three years against Aston Villa. On 21 January, he scored the winner against Burton Albion, also his first for the Bluebirds, after replacing Junior Hoilett. On Saturday 28th January, Rhys made his first ever competitive start for Cardiff City in the Championship away to Reading. An incredible journey for Rhys and yet another example of the Nomads Academy Pathway.
