LIDO HEAD TO DEESIDE FOR CUP CLASH This afternoon’s JD Welsh Cup fixture sees Afan Lido make their first trip to Deeside Stadium since March 2014. Back then, it was a 3-0 victory to a Connah’s Quay Nomads side managed by Mark McGregor thanks to goals from Craig Jones, Luke Holden and Gary O’Toole, with our last encounter against the side from Port Talbot coming in south Wales at the end of the same season. It was a fixture that saw The Nomads need a victory to secure safety in the Welsh top flight, and it was The Nomads who came out on top thanks to a thumping 8-1 victory, a result which not only secured our safety but also saw Afan Lido play their final game in the then Welsh Premier League. The Nomads come into the fourth round tie after a 3-0 victory away at Abertillery Bluebirds in the previous round, while Lido have defeated Llandudno, Aberbargoed Buds and Monmouth Town to reach this stage. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “We’ve had a great run in the Welsh Cup in the last two seasons, winning in 2018 and getting to the final last year. In getting to this stage, clubs from the leagues below have been on a great run - we have watched Afan Lido on a few occasions - they’re a squad full of Cymru Premier quality and had a convincing win in the last round against Llandudno so we are well aware of the challenge ahead. In the cup, all we can hope for is a home game where our record is fantastic - we’ve shown this season that it will take a very good team to beat us.” Connah's Quay Nomads vs Afan Lido 5

2-1 THE NEW SAINTS
CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS
NOMADS LOSE OUT AT PARK HALL IN FINAL PHASE ONE GAME Connah’s Quay Nomads lost by two goals to one at The New Saints on Saturday evening in the JD Cymru Premier. • Strong start for Nomads saw Wilde take lead • A Callum Morris own goal gave TNS equaliser • Simon Spender sent TNS 2-1 up with close range strike • Late chance goes begging for Nomads to confirm only second loss of the season There was much at stake in what was the final game of phase one before the JD Cymru Premier split, as Nomads travelled to Park in second place with just a point between themselves and league leaders TNS. They were also looking to defend a formidable record in the first half of the season before the split, as they had lost only one game in all domestic competitions, and conceded just 15 goals from 21 games. A spate of injuries saw Andy Morrison make five changes to his side, seeing the likes of Callum Roberts and John Disney come into the defence, and Sameron Dool replace Bakare in the attacking midfield. TNS boss Scott Ruscoe named a line up full of key players, as the likes of Jamie Mullan, Aeron Edwards, and golden boot holder Greg Draper all started. The Nomads started the game on the front foot, forcing a corner within a minute which was taken by Callum Roberts and sent into the net after a goalmouth scramble, but the would-be goal was ruled out for a foul on keeper Paul Harrison. Connah’s Quay then forced a free kick on the edge of the TNS area, which hit the wall via Roberts with a follow up effort from Disney going wide of the

right post. TNS’ first chance of the evening came in the 10th, when Draper shot at goal with the ball bouncing towards him from 12 yards out. He was however denied by a good save from Lewis Brass, who dived near his bottom right post to push it away. On 14 minutes, Nomads’ positive start paid dividends, as Callum Roberts made a run down the left wing and sent the perfect cross to Wilde, who headed into the top right corner at close range to make it 0-1. Boosted by the opener, the travelling Connah’s Quay side continued to make their presence felt in the TNS end through good runs and crosses from the likes of Poole and again Roberts, who was proving highly effective for the Nomads’ attacks. But on 26 minutes, the game was brought level from an own goal by Callum Morris, who unfortunately met a low Jamie Mullan cross inside the six yard box to inadvertently send the ball into the net. With the game level at 1-1 and half an hour played, both sides sought to tighten up, leading to few chances but many solid clearances at both ends. In the 37th, a Roberts cross glanced across the TNS goal mouth, with no one available to get a touch on the ball at close range in a good chance for Nomads. After successfully defending a corner in the 40th, Andy Morrison’s side went in at half time knowing they were very much in the thick of the top of the table clash. The restart was a tight one, as both TNS and Nomads looked to take control of the possession before opening up to try and take the lead. In the 53rd, a TNS move saw them get close to goal, but Callum Morris made a vital interception to clear. Nomads were again forced to defend in the 58th, when a threatening cross from the Saints’ Daniel Redmond was well headed away by John Disney. After the hour mark, Andy Morrison made his first change, swapping Sameron Dool for Ryan Wignall to bolster the Nomads’ attacking options. But just as Nomads went to push for a second, they were dealt a blow from a TNS counter attack, which led to Simon Spender striking from close range to make it 2-1 in the 69th minute. Nomads then quickly moved to bring on Michael Bakare and George Horan in place of Jamie Insall and George Horan respectively, as they battled for the possession to find an equaliser. As the game entered its final 10 minutes, TNS tried to restrict Nomads’ movement in their final third, but some determined play meant much of the action was played in the Saints’ end. On 85 minutes, a Declan Poole free kick was met close to the goal by Farquharson, but he couldn’t connect with it properly, allowing Paul Harrison to collect it. Two minutes later, a long throw in from Danny Holmes was met by Michael Bakare who again didn’t get enough on the ball to pull off a late equaliser. The Nomads’ urgent search for a second goal continued late into injury time, with the fourth official indicating a minimum of five minutes at the end of the game. With the likes of Horan, Farquharson, and Bakare all muscling into the TNS end, Nomads were targeting the goal at every opportunity including set pieces via Holmes’ long throw ins. They went closest in the 93rd minute, when a Nomads attack saw the ball bounce to Roberts who found himself clear in front of the goal from around seven yards out, but his shot went over in an agonisingly close chance for a dramatic equaliser. NOMAD’S WELSH CUP RECORD IN THE 21ST By David Rapson
Goals from Mike Wilde, Michael Bakare and Sameroon Dool saw Nomads progress past Abertillery Bluebirds in the third round of this season’s Welsh Cup to earn today’s home tie with Afan Lido. This will be Nomads’ 172nd game in the competition since first opposing Rhostyllen SC back in 1951. Matches between Nomads and Afan Lido stretch back to the very first day of the then League of Wales in August 1992 but this will be only our second encounter in the Welsh Cup. The first was ten years ago this weekend in Round Four. Lido were a second-tier side then, as now, but upset the odds to beat us 2-1 after extra time. It was a deserved victory too, as the home team battered Nomads in a goalless first period before Sam McNutt latched on to a ball over the top to put Connah’s Quay ahead in the 69th minute. Rather than feeling sorry for themselves, Lido fought back and from an 87th minute free kick Mark Jones drove in an equalising goal. Ten minutes into extra-time Nathan White found himself free at the far post to net the winner. Nomads’ team that day (30th January 2010) was: Terry McCormick: Tommy Baker, Allan Glover: Mark McGregor, Ben Alston, Alan Hooley; Jamie Petrie, Stuart Scheuber, Aaron Burns, Andy Olsen and Stuart Cook. Substitutes: Sam McNutt (for Hooley), Chris Herbert (for Burns), Mike Hayes (for Olsen) and Danny Pinch (unused). The following season, when Nomads were also a second-tier club playing in the Huws Gray Alliance, saw us reach the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup before bowing out to a single goal scored by the Welsh Premier League champions-elect Bangor City. That transpired to be the first of five such semi-final ties for Nomads over a period of eight years during which time we lifted the trophy when defeating Aberystwyth Town 4-1 in May 2018. Last season’s Cup Final loss to The New Saints was disappointing but hardly unexpected if past results are anything to go by. We have opposed TNS in eight Welsh Cup ties since the 2003/04 campaign and failed to score in seven of them! We did beat them 2-1 on our way to winning the trophy two years ago and despite sharing a 0-0 draw after extra-time in 2007/08, Nomads managed to progress by winning the penalty shoot-out. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Afan Lido
GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN
Good Afternoon and welcome; It’s Welsh Cup day. Afan Lido have traveled up from Port Talbot full of hope to make a giant killing, and they have players who could deliver it. It’s a traditional tie and for the neutrals the only thing that might have made it better would have been for it to have been played at The Marston’s Stadium, we are not neutral and are glad to be playing it on Deeside. Lido have a playing squad full of professional experience with no fewer than five players who have tasted action at Football League clubs in Scott Coughlin (Cardiff City); Bradley Flay(Wrexham); Kaid Mohamed (Cheltenham, Swindon); Chris Jones, (Swansea City, Grimsby); Steve Cann (Derby County, Rotherham). With the very well known ex-Carmarthen pair of Liam McCreesh and Sacha Walters also in the side it’s a team not to be taken lightly. They are tucked in to sixth place in the Cymru South table just behind next weeks cup final opponents STM Sports. Any promotion hopes they had were probably stifled by losing five of their first eight games. Since October it’s been almost championship form though with twenty two points from twelve games. They are a free scoring outfit with forty one goals coming in the twenty games. However, they have conceded thirty four. Being the Welsh Cup there will be extra time and penalties if necessary. The game will be decided today. We give a warm welcome to all connected with Lido and wish them a pleasant off pitch stay and a safe journey home afterwards. To get here Afan Lido have beaten Monmouth Town (3-1), Aberbargoed (2-1) and Llandudno (5-1) all at home. We came in at the third round and defeated a spirited Abitillery Bluebirds (3-0) down in South Wales. TNS lead by four points going into Phase Two of the League having defeated us by 2-1 last Saturday. It was a tight game in which we more than held our own. The game was decided upon two very controversial refereeing decisions. Refs are human, they make errors and they don’t have VAR in the Cymru Premier (yet). I’m not criticising the individual official, but we seem to have more of these decisions go against us than any other club. They have but seconds to come to a decision: but the good ones are more often right. Unfortunately on Saturday, and in my opinion, he got them wrong. Within the first minute TNS goalkeeper Harrison collided with his own defender allowing the loose ball to be netted for what should have been a dream start for us, inexplicably the ref blew for a foul . Then in mid-second half Jamie Insall got inside center back Hudson and was fouled for what must have been a very clear penalty. It wasn’t given and within seconds the ball was swept down field and put into our net for what turned out to be the winning goal. Football is unpredictable and luck rules. Ours was out on the day. Such are titles won. Our play was OK but TNS are still the side to beat and they continued their success over us at home that has lasted for 16 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Afan Lido
twenty three years. It will be difficult for us to claw back the four point gap in the remaining ten games and to do so that barren run at Park Hall will need to be ended. So, finally, the Nathaniel MG Cup Final will feature The Nomads. After losing four successive semi finals by 1-0 (Denbigh, TNS, TNS and Cardiff Met) we made it to the last stage by defeating Bala Town 2-0 at Deeside Stadium. We play STM Sports in the final at Newtown with a 5:15pm kick off. Our opponents are Cardiff based (in the suburb of St Mellons, which gives them their name), and they play at the Cardiff University Sports fields. The club was formed as recently as 2007 mostly from players of the Sunday League side Willows FC. They played originally in the Cardiff Combination Premier League, before beginning a rapid rise. Winning South Wales Amateur League Division Two at their first attempt. Promotion to the Welsh League was obtained at the end of 2014–15 season, finishing as Champions. The club had to defeat Pontlottyn 4-1 at Cardiff City Stadium in the SWFA promotion play-off. The match featured the unusual situation of one of the club’s players being arrested during the match by police officers for an outstanding charge of assault and failing to answer to court. They gained promotion to Division Two which they won the 2018–19 season. The season included a record 20–0 League Cup away win over Caerau which saw five STM Sports players score hat-tricks. As Division Two champions, the club was eligible for promotion to the newly established Cymru South League but were not awarded Tier 2 license to be eligible to play at that level. The club won their appeal and under the Management of Nana Baah they sit fifth in their first season of direct affiliation with 33 points from 18 games, ten of which have been won and 44 goals scored. Young striker Callum Bateman has netted eighteen of them. This year there is a real prize for winning. The victors will get to compete in the Scottish Challenge Cup alongside the League Champions. Make no mistake we want this silverware and maintaining our Scottish Campaigning really matters to us. Lee Evans is refereeing today. He is assisted by Gareth Wyn Jones and Richard Dolphin with Cheryl Foster as 4th official. Without them we would not have a game and we thank them.. Enjoy the Game . Trevor
