BOXING DAY DERBY AT DEESIDE Boxing Day afternoon will see Connah’s Quay Nomads host Airbus UK in our first encounter of the season. The Nomads head in to the game on the back of a great bounce-back performance against Bala Town last Friday - a game which saw us trail 1-0 at the break before a Michael Bakare brace sealed a great victory which marked not only a comeback on the night, but also showed a great way to bounce back from our first defeat of the season the week before at Cefn Druids. Airbus come into the game on the back of a good result against Cefn Druids last Saturday, picking up a 1-1 draw against Huw Griffiths’ side having led for a large portion of the game thanks to an early strike from ex-Nomad, Andy Owens. Prior to that result however, it was mid-October when the Wingmakers had last picked up a point in the JD Cymru Premier when they beat Newtown 2-0. Since then, they had been on a run of six consecutive losses, so last weekend’s point against Druids was a welcome one for our neighbours. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “Boxing Day games are a fixture you look for at the start of the season with Airbus being our closest Cymru Premier club, we hope to get a cracking crowd and a cracking atmosphere on Wednesday. Airbus have had a tough period with injuries but now have those players back and it’s no surprise that they got a result against an in-form Druids last time out and will feel that htey should have won the game. There will be some old faces for both clubs coming up against each other which always adds an edge to these games. Our home form has been fantastic and if we can match the second half performance against Bala, we will be a very difficult team to beat.” Connah's Quay Nomads vs Airbus UK Broughton 5

BAKARE BRACE COMPLETES BALA CHRISTMAS COMEBACK

2-1

Friday night saw Connah’s Quay Nomads bounce back from our first defeat of the season with a 2-1 victory over Bala Town to take back second place in the JD Cymru Premier.

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

BALA TOWN

• Ex-Nomads, Jonny Spittle gave Bala an early lead • Bala squandered opportunities to increase their advantage befor half time • Bakare scored twice in seven second-half minutes to send Nomads ahead • Nomads leapfrog Bala to regain second place in the league table There were two changes for Nomads, as Michael Wilde returned from a suspension to start in place of Michael Bakare, and John Disney came in for Callum Roberts at the back. Bala-s lineup included the in form Chris Venables, as well as ex-Nomad defenders Jonny Spittle and Sean Smith. The game began and after an evenly contested opening few minutes, Bala took a surprise early lead in the fifth from a corner ball. The set piece was punched away by Brass, but the clearance fell short allowing Spittle to head in from around eight yards out. Boosted by the opener, the Lakesiders stayed in the Nomads’ half, with Lassana Mendes crossing to Steven Leslie who headed just wide from close range in the 8th. Nomads grew into the game, and were constantly looking to play up and into the Bala end with the likes of Declan Poole and Sameron Dool making good runs into the final third. As the 20th minute mark approached, Bala were again dangerous from corner balls, as they won three consecutive set pieces, two of which caused a scramble in the Nomads’ six yard box in which they managed to keep the

visitors out. In the 22nd, Nomads saw one of their best chances of the half, when a deft volley effort from Declan Poole was pushed over the crossbar by the fingertips of keeper Josh Tibbetts. By the half hour mark, the game had evened out, but Nomads were still chasing chances in front of the Bala whilst the visitors were continuing to get into the Connah’s Quay final third. In the latter stage of the first half, Bala turned the pressure on again, with Danny Holmes keeping out Lassana Mendes who was making cutting runs from the right wing into the Nomads’ area. In the 38th, Bala missed out on a great chance to double their lead when Steven Leslie got the ball around 10 yards from the goal and sent it just over the crossbar. Despite Bala’s efforts to make it two before half time, Nomads stuck to their defensive discipline which saw them take the game to the break with Spittle’s opener separating them. Andy Morrison made a change at half time, with Michael Bakare coming on to replace Sameron Dool. Nomads showed their will to find an equaliser early on in the second half, with Poole rushing into the area in the 46th and shooting only to be blocked by multiple Bala shirts behind the ball. In the 50th, after Priestley Farquharson received a yellow for a foul on the halfway line, Nomads’ second change saw him depart with Kris Owens coming on to join the Quay defence. Bala went up to rekindle their search for a second, but neither side could get a hold of the game as the hour approach, with a number of missed balls in the midfield seeing Jamie Insall run at goal but be beaten to the ball by Tibbetts. Michael Bakare was meanwhile getting in and around the Bala final third, but the ball didn’t seem to be falling for him in the 60th as Nomads were left with 30 minutes to find a result from the game. John Disney helped Nomads’ attacking campaign in the 63rd, winning a corner after a battle with Mendes, which led to a series of set pieces culminating in a deep throw in for Nomads. Holmes took it and sent it long into the Bala area, where it fell to Michael Bakare who hit a powerful strike into the back of the net to equalise in the 66th and make it game on at Deeside. It was clear that neither side wanted to settle for a draw, with Lewis Brass making a great sweeping save against Mendes who was about the strike from seven yards out. With 20 minutes to play the game had an end to end feel, and Nomads were increasing their presence on the Bala end, seen through an Insall cross just missing Bakare in the 71st. And in the 74th, Bakare was again on target to complete a fantastic turnaround for Nomads, getting on the end of a hard fought Declan Poole cross to head it in at close range to make it 2-1 to Nomads. The final ten minutes saw Bala introduce another ex-Nomad in Mike Hayes as he looked to push for an equaliser. The Lakesiders’ best chance falling to Hayes in injury time, but he saw his close-range effort blast over Lewis Brass’ crossbar before Rob Jenkins blew his whistle to signal full time shortly after. The result sees The Nomads leapfrog Bala back in to second place in the JD Cymru Premier league table while league leaders TNS lost at home to Cardiff Met, meaning that the gap at the top narrowed to just a point. REFLECTIONS

DAVID RAPSON LOOKS BACK AT THE PREVIOUS LEAGUE GAMES BETWEEN THE NOMADS AND AIRBUS UK BROUGHTON This Boxing Day we renew league conflict with our near neighbours from Broughton. The last Welsh Premier League clash between our two clubs was almost three years ago on 30th December 2016 when The Nomads gained their most comprehensive victory over Airbus UK to date. Our two clubs first met at the top level of Welsh football during the 2004/2005 season. The previous season Airbus UK had convincingly won the Cymru Alliance in only their fourth season in the league following promotion from the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) – as British Aerospace FC – in April 2000. That first meeting at The Airfield (today known as The Hollingsworth Group Stadium) was more than 15 years ago on 10th December 2004, the game ending in a 3-3 draw. After beating Newtown 1-0 in their inaugural WPL fixture, courtesy of a rare Andy Thomas goal, The Wingmakers suffered a run of 18 games without another victory. Nevertheless, after taking an early lead against Nomads, three quick strikes from Tommy Mutton and Stuart Rain (2) put the visitors in command. Richard Smart reduced the arrears in the 75th minute before Steve Hughes netted an equaliser right on full time. Roles were reversed almost twelve months later, however, when the teams met at the Deeside Stadium on 25th November 2005. Connah’s Quay had failed to win any of their first 11 league fixtures while Airbus already had 14 points under their belt. Gary Pinch opened the scoring for Nomads on 20 minutes and when Gary O’Toole added a second just before the break, it looked like that barren run would end. Airbus fought to stay in the match but a second goal from Pinch ensured three points and began a run of four straight league victories for The Nomads. The first clash of the 2006/2007 campaign witnessed another twist ‘at the death’ as Nomads trailed 2-1 going into added time despite having taken an early lead courtesy of a Dave Swanick strike. Mapletoft and Crawford then put the home side ahead before the dramatic closing stages when first Mark Limbert equalised (90+1) and then Chris Taylor snatched all three points for Connah’s Quay with seconds remaining of added time. Overall the two clubs cannot be separated in league games with both having won nine times with six games drawn. Nomads edge the goal difference by a single strike netting 39 goals to our opponents 38. Strangely each club has a better record away from home against one another, Airbus having won on six of their twelve visits to the Deeside

Stadium while Nomads have won four and drawn five at Broughton. After two seasons when each team won once at the Quay and both games at Broughton finished goalless, The Wingmakers enjoyed a league ‘double’ in 2009/2010, the year that Connah’s Quay suffered demotion as the league was reduced in size. Despite keeping Airbus at arms- length until the interval, four second half goals sunk Connah’s Quay as did a single Jack Abraham goal in the return game. Following a two-year exile when Nomads twice won the Cymru Alliance title, Deeside ‘derbies’ were renewed at Christmas 2012 and this time it was The Nomads who gained the upper hand. Following a 2-2 draw at Broughton the return game saw Nomads enjoy a 4-1 victory with two goals from Ricky Evans (both penalties), and one each for Jamie Wynne and Jamie Petrie. After both teams won their away game 2-1 in 2013/2014 it was the turn of our opponents to inflict a crushing ‘double’ over us the following season. Indeed, it was a miserable Christmas for Nomads’ supporters as they watched a 0-4 loss at Broughton on Boxing Day only to follow that with a 0-3 defeat on New Year’s Day 2015.

In the six seasons since Nomads returned to the top-flight, our two clubs have only finished in the same phase two group on one occasion (The 2015/2016 Championship Conference). In the first phase we had taken just a single point off Airbus but then won both games in the later stage to finish fourth in the table. Nathan Woolfe scored the only goal in the away match while a Nick Rushton double at the Deeside Stadium cancelled out Ian Kearney’s late effort. Following a disappointing 2016/2017 campaign Airbus were relegated to the Cymru Alliance, their situation not being helped by heavy Christmas defeats at the hands of Connah’s Quay. Three second-half goals ensured Nomads took the points away on Boxing Day while the return fixture four days later gave the home fans plenty to cheer as Nomads ran out 5-1 victors. Not only that but centre-half and captain George Horan registered a remarkable hattrick from open play. Our visitors will be fighting hard to retain their place in the JD Cymru Premier at the end of this season so the two Christmas clashes over this week and next will be crucial.

GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN

Hello So, Boxing Day 2019 and the last home game of the year. What better way to end 2019 than to welcome our near neighbors and good friends from Airbus UK Broughton. That they come to us having ended a truly dispiriting run of defeats with a brave display that gained a point against the only club to have defeated us in this League season, Cefn Druids, is to their credit. We welcome all the officers players and supporters. Sosh and Andy get a special welcome for they both served us well, one as manager the other as player. Airbus are in a relegation battle and that is the fate of nearly every promoted side in the past few years. The Cymru Premier is a tough competition and the class gap between it and the second tier is vast. However the Wingmakers can harbor hope because their displays at Bala and against Druids show that on their day, they can challenge the best this league has to throw at them. We are truly a resilient side and as Andy often says our group of players often seem to find a way to win when they shouldn’t. Depleted in personnel we were up against a Bala side who came to Deeside having won their previous five league games; and in the process scoring 13 goals without conceding. We were just not at the races in a first half of total Lakesider dominance, but only saw our defense breached the once. In a second half of improvement we final leveled and then snatched a crucial win. It was a brave display and reminds me of an old football homily,”only very good sides win when playing badly”. The defeat must have been a crushing disappointment to our title chasing rivals. We hope that supporters will avail themselves of the coach trips that Eddie is arranging to away games. TNS (Oswestry) away on Saturday 18th of January, kick off 17:15. Picking up at the Custom House pub a cost of Adults £11, kids £7. Then the League Cup Final (Newtown) Saturday 1st February, kick off 17:15. Picking up at the Ship pub Connah’s Quay at 14:00, arriving in Newtown around 15:30.again Adults £11, Kids £7. We had a real fun day out at Penybont on the last one, so get on board for these. This club goes into the new year in very good shape. The first team have every chance of securing a fifth successive European qualification and are in the League Cup Final on February 1st. Drawn at home to a side from the league below in the Welsh Cup and with an outside tilt for the championship ahead we have never been better placed in our history. Our development side end the year in third place but with games in hand over TNS and Airbus that would see them go top if won. We moved the Youth side (our Under 18s) into a tougher men’s competition to give them more daunting experiences, however they seem to flourish against better sides, and currently sit second to Airbus ; one point behind but with two games in hand. At Academy level all our Academy cup sides are through to the final stages. On the playing front this portends to be a simply outstanding season. We are halfway through it and lets hope this success can be maintained through to May. So what happened in the year of 2019 on the field for the first XI? Well, we played 31 League Games and won 17; Drew 9; Lost 5. We scored 59 goals and conceded 29. This gave us 60 points securing second place at the end of season 2018/19 and leaving us 16 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Airbus UK Broughton

in second place so far this time around. We played 12 cup ties winning 9 of them. Reaching three finals we lost the Irn Bru by 3-1 against Ross County at Inverness and the Welsh Cup at the Rock by 3-0 to TNS. We could have won both but missed chances in the Highlands that should have given us an unassailable lead, in the Welsh Cup we were denied two stonewall penalties when only one down. The league cup has seen us reach a final against second tier STM Sports which will be in next year’s stats. We played four Europa League ties and shocked the football world by beating Kilmarnock. Who can ever forget the headline in the Scotsman Newspaper on the day we prepared to entertain Cove Rangers, ”Three words that spread terror into the heart of Scottish Football – Connah’s Quay Nomads”. Partizan Belgrade were a step too far though; and we went down 4-0 to the Eastern European Giants on aggregate. We played three pre Europe warm ups and drew with the Isle of Man national side beat Northern Ireland’s Cliftonville and drew with Aberdeen over in Cork. So what a great year and this one promises even better. Next seasons Europa League is the last one before UEFA re-organise into three competitions. The value of our wins over HJK Helsinki and Kilmarnock (1.500 points) both of which were in Qualifying Round one and not in the Preliminary competition to Welsh Football were shown last week when a UEFA statement confirmed a change to the number of places allocated to national associations. Our success combined with TNS achieving victories in the Champions League saw Wales reach 48th place leapfrogging Northern Ireland and the Faeroe Islands and achieving parity with Montenegro. We keep our three places but NI are reduce to two. UEFA stated that; “The rankings at the end of the 2018/19 season define the access list for the 2020/21 season”. The body has ruled that associations ranked below 50th in the country coefficients table will be allocated only two spots for the 2020/21 season, it could so easily have been us as we scrape home by 0.125 points. The UEFA Executive Committee also approved the creation of a third UEFA club competition from summer of 2021.This will see more clubs from more associations play European football. The new competition (which has the working title of UEL2) will mirror the existing UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, and feature 32 teams in a group stage. The format will see eight groups of four teams, followed by the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. An additional knockout round will be played before the round of 16 between teams ranked second in their groups and the third-ranked teams of the UEFA Europa League groups. The winner of the new competition will be elevated to participate in the UEFA Europa League in the following season. The new competition matches will continue to be played on Thursdays starting in June. The UEFA Champions League continues to be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This new third competition will ensure that at least 34 countries will be represented in the group stages of the UEFA club competitions . All member associations will have access to the three club competitions and all associations will keep the same overall access quota as currently. The detailed revenue distribution and solidarity systems and other details, such as the competition name/brand, coefficient system, and commercial strategy will be finalised during 2019/20. No changes were made to the format and access list of the UEFA Champions League. Enjoy the game; Trevor
