NEW DECADE STARTS AT DEESIDE Saturday afternoon will see the first game of the new decade for Connah’s Quay Nomads as we host Barry Town United in our penultimate Phase One fixture of the JD Cymru Premier. The Nomads come into the game on the back of a great December which saw us take nine points from a possible twelve despite having a number of players out through both suspension and injury, which led to Andy Morrison and Danny Holmes being nominated for the December Manager and Player of the Month awards. The last time Barry were here at Deeside saw us secure second place in last season’s campaign as a 1-1 draw was enough to seal second place, Europa League and Scottish Challenge Cup football for another year. Barry head north having somewhat regained some of their early season form, having won two of their last three games, having lost six of their previous seven prior to that including a 4-0 defeat to ourselves. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “We had four games last year and I don’t think we beat them - we drew three and lost one - we played them earlier in the season and we got a good result down there, albeit against ten men but we were in a strong position when the player left the pitch. We’re very strong at home - we’ve got an incredible home record, we’re unbeaten there in a long long time, through this season and into last season so it’s very difficult for any team to come to our place and if we maintain the standards we’ve shown this season, at home especially, it’ll take a very good team to beat us. We’re looking forward to the challenge - we’ve got the utmost respect for Barry for what they’ve done over the last few seasons, they’ve grown and got stronger and stronger - brought in good players and I’m sure they’ll bring more good players in to their team and be a formidable force going forwards for many seasons.”

NOMADS FINISH DECADE WITH FLINTSHIRE DERBY WIN Connah’s Quay Nomads claimed a 4-0 Flintshire Derby win over Airbus UK Broughton at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium in the JD Cymru Premier on Monday evening. The match was goalless at half time, but second half strikes Danny Holmes, Priestley Farquharson and a Jamie Insall brace secured the win. • 18 year old keeper Eric Merner makes clean sheet debut • Nomads broke deadlock via Insall near the hour mark • Insall doubled lead with Panenka penalty • Defenders Holmes and Farquharson strike late on The game, which marked Nomads’ final of the decade, was the second part of the traditional double header with Airbus UK Broughton over the festive period. In the first game, Nomads went 2-0 up via Jamie Insall and John Disney in the first half, but an 80th minute penalty ensured the game ended up a battle on a heavy pitch at Deeside. Andy Morrison made two changes, with one significant for goalkeeper Eric Merner, who made his full league debut with Lewis Brass out injured. Priestley Farquharson meanwhile started in place of Callum Morris. Airbus also had a change of goalkeepers, replacing Dave Roberts with Lewis Hall, whilst Andy Owens remained leading the line for the Wingmakers. The derby kicked off in typically tight fashion, with neither side conjuring a real chance until the 10th, when a 25 yard out Jay Owen effort curved and hit the post, and Michael Bakare’s follow up strike from eight yards going wide. Airbus replied to that chance with a period of sustained pressure on the

Nomads goal, in which they won three successive corners which were dealt with by Andy Morrison’s tightly organised defence. Having held off the Wingmakers’ attack, Nomads hit back with another chance off the woodwork when Wilde hit the bar from 12 yards in the 29th, with another secondary strike from Bakare saved by the keeper. On 34 minutes, the strong number of Nomads’ travelling support thought Wilde had broken the deadlock from close range, but referee Iwan Griffith ruled it out for a foul on the goalkeeper. With half time approaching, the tight nature of the game showed little sign of a goal going in. Andy Owens threatened close to half time but was found offside, and a late attempt from the Wingmakers was cancelled out by the composed Eric Merner who came off his line to catch a cross into his area in injury time. The second half started with the encounter remaining tight, seen when Wilde just missed a header on a Declan Poole cross in the 47th before Airbus had a claim for a penalty via handball waved away two minutes later. But as the hour mark approached, the Nomads finally found their goal via Insall. After a cross from Bakare was met by Wilde who hit the post, leading to both him and Wilde scrambling for the ball with Insall looking to have got the final touch at close range in the 57th. Nomads’ lead was however nearly short lived, as on 59 minutes they launched a counter attack and shot wide from around 10 yards. But as the well-attended Flintshire derby went on, Nomads began to establish themselves as the team on top, dominating the midfield to produce regular runs on goal. This was seen in the 68th, when good work down the wing from Declan Poole saw him head the ball to keep it from going out for a throw in, and cutting down the byline to send a low cross in at a tight angle. This pressure ultimately led to Nomads’ second goal after Michael Bakare was fouled after bursting into the Airbus area. The penalty was given, and Jamie Insall stepped up to score a cool Panenka finish to send Nomads 2-0 up on 76 minutes. Connah’s Quay were now in control, and showed no signs of slowing down as the 80th minute came, making it 3-0 in the 83rd. After Michael Bakare broke clear in front of goal, causing keeper Hall to rush out to block him. The ball spilled to defender Danny Holmes, who scored into the now open goal from around 15 yards to all but seal the three points for Nomads. Nomads then rang the changes, with Callum Roberts replacing Declan Poole and Conor Harwood coming on in place of goalscorer Insall. The now dominant Connah’s Quay side were firing on all cylinders, and capped off the night with an excellent individual goal from Priestley Farquharson, who surged from the midfield and into the area where he finished from around 12 yards into the near bottom right corner. The night also saw another Nomads academy graduate make his first team debut, as Max Moore was brought on in place of Michael Bakare to help see out the evening.

REFLECTIONS
David Rapson looks back at the previous league games between Nomads and Barry Town United Despite being late entrants into the League of Wales, Barry Town quickly established themselves. Finishing 7th in their inaugural 1994/1995 campaign, The Dragons went on to win the title in each of the next four seasons until pipped by Llansantffraid in 2000, Nomads having a hand in that! Three more championships followed before internal strife and the loss of their professional footballers resulted in relegation at the end of the 2003/2004 season. During the first five years in which our two clubs competed in the League of Wales, Nomads failed to win any of the clashes. The balance has been redressed of late with Barry Town United winning just one of our last nine meetings. With this season’s ‘Top Six’ being such a close-fought affair, there are no easy matches from hereon in and a true battle for the title is about to take shape with Nomads and Barry yet to meet twice more after today. Our first meeting with The Dragons took place at Jenner Park on 10th September 1994, the game ending in a 1-1 draw. Peter Hughes gave Nomads the lead on the hour mark, but it took the home side a mere two minutes to equalise courtesy of Terry Boyle. The return fixture ended 2-2 and the third meeting between the clubs was also drawn this time a goalless affair at the Halfway Ground in September 1995, although Connah’s Quay struck 14 goals in their next two home matches against Briton Ferry Athletic and Caersws! By January 1996, Barry Town were already well on the way to a first league title when defeating Nomads 2-0 in Glamorgan although David Withers’ brace only came after 85 and 90 minutes. Nevertheless, that proved to be the first of seven consecutive league victories over Nomads for the side in gold and blue. On 2nd November 1996 Barry won 4-1 at the Halfway Ground, their ninth win already in a season that saw them retain their title by a massive 21 points scoring 129 goals and losing just once, 1-0 at Llansantffraid in March 1997. They soon got over that little hiccup by beating us 2-0 a week later! The first league fixture of 1997/1998 pitted us against The Dragons on Deeside, and it was ‘more of the same’ with our visitors repeating their 4-1 victory of the previous season. It was not a game for the faint hearted either with Caernarfon-based referee Arwel Jones at the centre of the action. Two Nomads players were dismissed, and Barry Town awarded two penalties both of which Chris Pike buried into the back of our net. Strangely none of the four incidents were connected.

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Barry Town United
Nomads did well to contain the size of our loss in the away game to just 1-2 as Barry swept to a third title, this time undefeated and netting 134 goals in their 38 games. Disappointingly 1998/1999 saw Nomads suffer a third successive league ‘double’ at the hands of our opponents before a huge change in fortune a year later. A week before Christmas 1999 we travelled to Jenner Park having collected a mere five points from our previous six games. During that period Barry had taken 15 points and netted 21 goals yet a goal from Jon Kenworthy inside two minutes put our tails up and despite Jodie Jenkins equalising a couple of minutes later, Stuart Rain restored Nomads’ advantage on 11 minutes. Paul Evans and Justin Perry then scored to give the home side a 3-2 lead at the interval but Kenworthy grabbed his second (56 minutes) and we came away with a hard-earned point.

The return game played at the Deeside Stadium on 29th April 2000 will long remain in the memory of our then record League of Wales attendance of 688. Barry Town needed to win the game in order to snatch the title from Total Network Solutions, but Nomads had other ideas and took an early lead through Stuart Rain. The Dragons battled hard, but our defence stood firm and a second Rain strike in the 84th minute sealed Nomads’ victory and a first title for TNS.

Nonetheless, Barry went on to win the championship in each of the next three campaigns although by smaller margins. They claimed a fourth league ‘double’ over us in 2000/2001, without Nomads getting on the scoresheet in either game and a fifth two seasons later. In between, however, the 2001/2002 season witnessed Nomads winning 1-0 at Jenner Park courtesy of Lloyd Roberts and scraping a 2-2 draw in the return fixture – after twice falling behind – when Stuart Terry scored from the spot five minutes from the end. Things turned sour for The Dragons in 2003/2004 and that season saw them having to find no fewer than 73 different players in order to fulfil their 32 league games only three of which were won. It was a sad way for such a successful club to go and it took a great deal of heart from officials and supporters to eventually fight their way back to the top-flight 14 years later. Either side of the void it was Nomads’ turn to record consecutive league ‘doubles’ although the successes in 2003/2004 cannot hold too much merit. Indeed, last term we met four times (twice in each phase) and failed to beat our opponents so our 4-0 victory in South Wales earlier this season was well-received by our growing band of supporters! It will be interesting to see how the remainder of this campaign unfolds and we look forward to further challenges from The Dragons of Barry Town United.

BYRNE JOINS THE NOMADS Connah’s Quay Nomads are pleased to announce the signing of 22 year old goalkeeper, Oliver Byrne. Byrne has previously played at Stevenage Borough and Atherton Collieries, having spent much of his youth at three of the top academies in the country in the form of Blackburn Rovers, Cardiff City and Manchester United. Byrne was part of the Manchester United U18 team that also included Marcus Rashford, Tim Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe. On joining The Nomads, Byrne said “I’m delighted to have signed for The Nomads - I’ve been training with the club since November and have enjoyed every session. I am looking forwards to being involved in matchdays and working under Andy and his staff. I had other offers on the table, but the professionalism and hunger of the club is what swung my decision. I’m really looking forward to the second half of the season and helping The Nomads to more silverware.” Byrne will wear the number 13 shirt at Deeside.

Hello Welcome to title contending rivals Barry Town. David and the committee, Gavin his staff and players and an away support that rivals ours in number, but exceeds us in noise, are all very welcome. Last season, they claimed a Europa League berth after a third place finish and I am sure they want more. They have a very impressive record on the road in this campaign winning eight (at Penybont , Carmarthen, Airbus, TNS, Newtown, Aberystwyth and Cardiff Met) drawing once at Bala Town and losing twice (Caernarfon and Druids) for a haul of 25 points. Easily the best record in the competition. TNS have gained 20 points, Nomads and Bala both have 19. The home record has not been as impressive with four wins, three draws and three defeats. But they are on the road today and are very dangerous opponents. We have done well to gain three consecutive wins despite an injury and suspension crisis. Today we will have the skipper back in action and hope that one or two more can return. At Airbus, Eric Merner made a sound debut in goal and with Lewis still out it will be either he or new signing Oliver Byrne between the sticks. Max Moore became the 35th player to make a first team appearance whilst in our academy and although it took us an age to score we were impressive and always too strong for the Wingmakers. Our near neighbours are in trouble near the foot of the table but played with sprit and we wish them every success in their battle to stay in the Cymru Premier. It was good to see such strong support and more than half of the five hundred strong crowd were with us, it was very encouraging. Next week we go to The New Saints for our final Phase one fixture. On many websites its still listed as a 7:45pm match on Friday. However, due to television requirement the whole league programme will kick off at 5:15pm on Saturday. Eddie is running a bus, please support it by booking your place today. Recently I have fielded a few questions from supporters on the changes to European competition due to start with the summer of 2021. Here’s how it will be arranged. Here’s how they get to enter and why they go in at the different levels. European football ranks member Associations in an order of Merit based upon aggregated club performances. The Cymru Premiership is currently ranked at 48th , The English Premier League is ranked 2nd and Scottish League ranks 20th . Clubs get to enter according to a complicated system based upon their own record, and that of the league they compete in. Its called the Co-efficient system. There are fifty five nations currently members of UEFA. From the summer of 2021 their will be three competitions . THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE This remains unchanged with the champions of all 54 Associations entering. Europe’s big leagues end up entering more 16 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Barry Town United
clubs and in later rounds. The Cymru Premier has achieved enough Coefficient points to avoid the play off and go in at Q1. Should a club lose at that stage they are transferred into EUFA Conference 2nd Qualifying Round. Should they win they go into Q2 and if they lose at that stage they are transferred into the Europa League Q1. THE EUROPA LEAGUE In the wake of criticism from the big league about the drain on their clubs by playing so many matches, (Wolves entered on 23rd July and have played 12 matches to reach the Knockout round). Although clubs like ours would love this, clubs like them see it as a serious drain on resources and a cause of fixture chaos. To meet the demands of the super Leagues, UEFA have reduced the Europa League to a 58 club competition in which the Cup winners from Associations 1 to 15 are joined by the fourth placed team from France and Fifth placed teams from England , Spain, Italy and Germany. Thirty seven Champions League Q” losers also compete. So if it was this year Wolves would have come in on the 30th of August to play in a group of four followed by a Quarter Final, Semi final and Final. THE UEFA CONFERENCE. This is the old Europa League reformed. 138 clubs will start off in this new cup. 46 more will join them. There will be no preliminary round. 72 clubs including three from the Cymru Premier will enter the 1st Qualifying Round. Clubs keep their current Coefficients. The Nomads are on 3.250 and would be seeded in Q1 and would expect to be in Q2. In the second round the winners are joined by 14 cup winners from associations 16–29; 14 runners-up from leagues 16–29; 16 thirdplaced teams from Leagues 13–28; 9 fourth-placed teams from Leagues 7–15 and one fifth-placed team from League 6 (Russia). The 20 losers from Champions League preliminary and first qualifying rounds enter at this stage but play in a separated part of the draw. So we would be in a competition in which recent opponents Soligorsk, Stabeak, Vojvodina, Partizan and Kilmarnock couldn’t be met until at least the 3rd Qualifying Round. We would have a real prospect of advancing to the Group Stage. However, my personal opinion is that this reform is a bit of a dogs dinner dreamt up to keep the big boys happy and at the expense of everyone else. We shall see how it works. Next home game at the Deeside stadium will be the Welsh Cup fourth round tie with Afan Lido from Port Talbot. They are currently in sixth place in the Cymru South. Having won 8 of 17 fixtures, scoring 34 goals and conceding 27. Our old rival Kaid Mohammed will be up front for them, and after leaving Carmarthen he played for Swindon, Torquay and Cheltenham Town amongst others. A recent wonder goal he scored was highlighted on S4C and we will have to watch him if we are to progress. Trevor
