PHASE TWO RETURNS TO DEESIDE Friday evening sees The Nomads first home game of Phase Two of the JD Cymru Premier as we welcome Caernarfon Town to Deeside Stadium. The Nomads come into the game following a great opening weekend in the second phase with a 1-0 victory over Barry Town United thanks to Michael Wilde’s seventh goal in four games, while Caernarfon fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Bala, who came from behind thanks to two Chris Venables goals to take all three points at The Oval. The last time Caernarfon came to Deeside Stadium was back in mid-October in a game which saw The Nomads go 10 games unbeaten in the league after a convincing 4-2 victory. Goals from Michael Wilde, Decalen Pool and a brace from Jamie Insall cancelled out strikes from Jamie Breese and Danny Brookwell in either half. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “I was at the game (Caernarfon vs Bala) - a very strange game - 50-60mph wind and both teams seemed to play better against the wind than actually with it - they’ll be disappointed because at 1-0 they had two or three chances to get the second and then the way the game was it would have been dead, but Bala stayed alive and got back into the game so I know they’ll be disappointed because I think a draw would have been a fair result so they’ll be coming here slightly wounded and wanting to put that right. We’ve got a terrific record at home - if you look back over the last year, I think it might be one defeat in a year so we’ve been very good, we’re in a rich vein of form and we’re playing really well at the moment and in all areas of the game, asking questions in all different areas - if we maintain the standards we’ve set over the last couple of months where we’ve kind of raised the bar a little bit and we can keep producing the opportunities to score goals, it’ll take a good team to beat us.” Connah's Quay Nomads vs Caernarfon Town 5

NOMADS START PHASE TWO WITH WIN OVER BARRY Connah’s Quay Nomads commenced their Championship Conference campaign in phase two of the JD Cymru Premier with a 1-0 win over Barry Town at Jenner Park. A Michael Wilde goal in the third minute was enough to hand Nomads a win to send them within one point of first place in the league table. • Craig Curran makes full club debut • Early Wilde goal sent Nomads ahead • Barry reduced to ten with McLaggon seeing red • Disciplined Nomads hold out for victory The Nomads’ boss named a strong attacking line up, giving January signing Craig Curran his full debut alongside fellow forwards Michael Wilde and Jamie Insall. Gavin Chesterfield meanwhile handed starts to household Barry names including Kayne McLaggon, Chris Hugh and Jordan Cotterill as the Linnets looked to reverse their two losses against Nomads in phase one of the JD Cymru Premier. Despite the first half being a close contest, the Nomads had to wait only three minutes before taking the lead. After a low Michael Bakare strike from 20 yards, coming from a Declan Poole run down the left, Michael Wilde got on the end of it to convert from just six yards out. Barry Town were behind but still well in the encounter, with the George Horan led defence keeping their early equaliser attempts at bay. On eight minutes, Craig Curran was keen to open his Nomads account with a

well taken 25 yard effort, but Barry keeper Mike Lewis held it. As the game went on it remained tight with both sides fighting hard to try and take the lion’s share of possession. In the 14th minute, a free kick for Nomads from the left wing was crossed in by Bakare, with his delivery headed just over the bar by Horan. Curran then again threatened for Nomads, sending a volley set up by Horan over the goal in the 20th. Against a Barry side with plenty of firepower, Andy Morrison’s side were doing well to contain them as they looked to the likes of Chris Hugh to send them further into the Nomads’ final third. In the 27th, the crossbar was hit by Nomads through Michael Wilde, who went close to heading another effective Bakare cross in. Poole was looking dangerous on the wing for Nomads, nearly breaking into the Barry area in the 33rd minute after combining well with Insall, and sent a shot over from 18 yards after using some impressive skill to get past the defence. With five minutes to go before half time, Barry were dealt a major blow when referee Iwan Griffith showed star man Kayne McLaggon a straight red card for a challenge on Declan Poole. After a competitive first half and good advert for the JD Cymru Premier, Nomads had done enough to take their lead in at half time while Barry were tasked with staying in the game with 10 men. The first chance after the restart came in the 51st, when Craig Curran broke free on goal but was met by Mike Lewis, who came off his line to sweep Curran’s 10 yard effort away. Andy Morrison then made his first change of the day, bringing on Kris Owens to replace Jamie Insall as Connah’s Quay sought to ensure their clean sheet remained intact. On 55 minutes, Callum Morris triggered a surprise attack on the Barry end with a tackle on the halfway line which set Craig Curran up to shoot wide from 12 yards in another promising chance on his first start. After the hour mark, Barry moved to make a significant substitution when they replaced Paul Morgan with new signing and ex-Birmingham City winger David Cotterill. He joined his side as they began to put pressure on the Nomads’ end, sending a 65th minute free kick towards goal from 25 yards out in his first touch of the game, which was on target but pushed away for a corner by Brass. After a challenge from Farquharson, the hosts won a free kick near the edge of the Quay area two minutes later, with Cotterill stepping up but sending it wide. As the game entered the final 20 minutes it became a tense and tight affair, with Callum Morris seeing a yellow card as both sides battled hard for a result. Despite regular attacks from Barry, the Nomads were managing well, and brought on left back Callum Roberts to replace Bakare in the 75th as they continued to focus on their clean sheet. In the 81st, Cotterill again lined up a set piece in a good position around 20 yards from the Nomads’ goal, but the delivery didn’t challenge Brass as it went over and out for a goal kick. A minute later, Wilde was causing problems at the Barry end but couldn’t get enough on the ball to send it goalwards at close range. Nomads’ third and final substitution saw John Disney replace Craig Curran as he joined a well drilled defensive effort to keep out last ditch attempts to salvage a result from Barry. Composure was key in the final stages of the game, and the Nomads showed it in abundance as they controlled the ball down the left wing to win a late corner, which was held up near the corner flag by Morris. Full time confirmed a hard fought victory for Nomads which sends them just a point off the top of the table with nine games to play in the league season. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Caernarfon Town 7

Connah’s Quay were the hot favourites for the cup clash, as they came into the game 2nd in the JD Cymru Premier with only two losses, and had beaten Rhyl, Guilsfield, Flint Town and Bala to meet STM Sports in the final. Nana Baah’s outfit were the underdogs, but far from written off as they were enjoying a fine first season in the JD Cymru South, and were looking to add a third top flight scalp to the record having beaten Newtown AFC and Aberystwyth to meet with Nomads. Andy Morrison named a strong line up to start the game, with captain George Horan and Michael Wilde looking to add a Nathaniel MG Cup winners’ medal to their Nomads honours. Jamie Insall joined Wilde upfront, with Horan backed by Danny Harrison and Priestley Farquharson, whilst new signing Craig Curran started on the bench.

STM Sports named a line up full of their regular names including captain Joseph Evans and the pacy attacking midfielder Marcus Jones. The game started with a good amount of possession for Nomads who sought to put pressure on the Nomads’ end early on. They made their attacking intent clear almost immediately, winning a free kick around 25 yards out from STM’s goal which hit the wall via Insall in the third minute. In the 7th, a well weighted cross from Michael Bakare looked dangerous as it went inside the area, but STM keeper Ben Boyer came off his line to catch it. But against the run of play on 12 minutes, Marcus Jones had a good chance for his side when he dribbled through a gap in the Nomads’ defence and shot low and wide from around 10 yards. Andy Morrison’s side quickly regained possession, having a good chance of their own when Wilde flicked a ball to Insall whose close range lob effort looped over the STM goal. After 20 minutes, Nomads were looking increasingly dangerous on the front foot, with good runs being made down the wings by the likes of Bakare and Priestley Farquharson. Michael Wilde was in the thick of it on 29 minutes, when he rose up to challenge keeper Boyer in the air and won a corner for his side. That corner was taken quickly by Bakare, who received it back to send an excellent cross near the goal where Wilde was waiting to send a trademark header into the top right corner of the net. Connah’s Quay kept the pressure on at 1-0, with a low volley attempt from Bakare in the 33rd being followed by another close range Insall strike going wide as the chances kept coming for Nomads. And they were rewarded for the persistence, with Wilde sealing his brace before half time in the 41st minute. It was again from a header as he converted an excellent ball from Kris Owens, this time sending it to the into the left side of the net. The Nomads took their well-deserved 2-0 lead in at half time, and came out for the second looking to build on it while maintaining their strong hold of the cup encounter. This target was met in a matter of just 20 seconds, as Jamie Insall made it 3-0 in style immediately after the whistle blew for the restart. When Wilde headed the ball up in the STM area, Insall, with his back to the goal, turned and hit it with a first-time volley to send it past a helpless Boyer. With the Nomads having all but cancelled out any threat of a comeback from their opponents, they continued to press, with Farquharson seeing an outstretched strike just a few yards from the STM goal trickle wide. Just before the hour mark, the game saw a Nomads debut, as former Tranmere, Ross County and Dundee man Craig Curran replaced Jay Owen. He got involved straight away, seeing a shot blocked from seven yards as Nomads were playing much of their football in STM Sports’ final third. A second change from Andy Morrison in the 65th introduced Sameron Dool in place of Jamie Insall to help uphold Nomads’ domination all over the park as the cup final entered its latter stages. Curran was unlucky not to extend Nomads’ lead in the 73rd, with keeper Boyer doing well to push away a header from a Wilde cross which was going towards the bottom left corner. STM were making a good account of themselves as they battled for every ball, and got into the Nomads’ area in the 78th only to see Lewis Brass to successfully sweep away in a rare moment of involvement for the Quay stopper. With ten minutes to go, and John Disney coming on for Priestley Farquharson, a composed, professional and attacking performance from Andy Morrison’s side left Connah’s Quay in complete control. The full time whistle confirmed Nomads as champions of the Nathaniel MG Cup for the first time in 24 years, and kicked off great scenes of celebration between the players, coaches, academy, and jubilant Nomads’ fans. REFLECTIONS
David Rapson looks back at previous league games against Caernarfon Town Wishing to remain in the English non-league pyramid upon the formation of the League of Wales, Caernarfon Town played in the Northern Premier League’s second tier between 1989 and 1995 when a decision was taken to join the Principality’s national league. The Canaries’ first game was against The Nomads at the Halfway Ground on 19th August 1995, Connah’s Quay winning 4-1, a victory that was repeated at The Oval in the return fixture in May 1996. Having scored one of our goals in the first game, left-winger Danny McGoona notched a hat-trick as Nomads completed a league ‘double’. Despite the foregoing, Caernarfon enjoyed a good inaugural season finishing sixth in the table, four places and eight points above Connah’s Quay. The following campaign saw them finish fourth, equal on points with Ebbw Vale. A European spot was in their grasp when they arrived at the Halfway Ground for the last game of the season, but a solitary goal scored by Chris Davies in front of 507 spectators condemned Cofi to a 1-0 defeat and the European chance was snatched away. As if to rub salt in the wound, Nomads completed a league ‘double’ in 1997/98 without conceding a goal, Davies and Stuart Rain netting on Deeside and Carl Smyth scoring the game’s only goal in the return fixture at The Oval in late February 1998. Honours were even in 1998/99 as both matches were drawn. Jamie Hughes equalised down at Caernarfon after Jason Sadler had given the home team a first-half lead and Hughes grabbed a brace inside 10 minutes in the return fixture. Goals from Steve Fisher and Chris Pickering either side of the interval rescued a point for our visitors. Nomads claimed a third league ‘double’ in 1999/2000 despite Mark Edwards giving Caernarfon an early lead at the Deeside Stadium in October 1999. Jon Kenworthy scored just after the break and with five minutes remaining Julian Pepper struck our winner. Our victory at The Oval was rather more comfortable after Andy Griffiths (penalty) and Carl Smyth had put Nomads two goals to the good inside the first 12 minutes. The Canaries suffered relegation at the end of that campaign having won just a solitary match (3-0 v Rhayader Town) but took the Cymru Alliance title twelve months later after scoring 105 goals in their 32 games. Once again, their first match back in the national league was away to Connah’s Quay Nomads and this time they went home happy. Former Nomad Darren Wynne scored after eight minutes George Horan equalised two minutes later, but Wynne completed the scoring on 25 minutes. 10 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Caernarfon Town
Strangely, the return on 4th January 2002 had the three goals at the back end of the game which had been goalless until Tommy Mutton (another with Nomads connections) put Caernarfon ahead (83 minutes). Andy Griffiths equalised with two minutes remaining only for Ryan Baker to grab victory for the Ovalites in the dying moments. Since then results have fluctuated without either side taking command for long spells. A trio of second-half goals earned Nomads a 3-0 home success in September 2003. The away fixture that season, however, was amongst the most memorable in which either club has played in the competition, the game at The Oval in February 2004, 16 years ago this week, ending with a 5-5 scoreline. Steve Watkin (penalty) and Mark Hobson put Caernarfon 2-0 up before Stuart Rain quickly pulled a goal back. The Canaries went in at half-time 3-1 to the good after Waynne Phillips’ 42nd minute strike. Rain then completed his hat-trick early in the second period, scoring twice either side of a goal for Caernarfon from Calvin Davies whose second strike in the 66th minute made it 5-3 to the home team. In a breathless finale, Gareth Owen reduced the deficit before Stuart Rain earned Nomads a point with his fourth goal of the afternoon in the 82nd minute.

2-0 Over the ensuing five seasons Connah’s Quay won four of the ten fixtures 2018/19 0-1 0-0 with four others drawn. A 2-2 draw on Deeside in September 2006 Phase Two 6-2 0-1 witnessed Tommy Mutton scoring for Nomads against his former club while Adam Dickinson registered the other goal. Dickinson was also on target as 2019/20 4-2 0-0 Nomads won 2-0 at The Oval four months later with Chris Williams adding the second. Caernarfon Town suffered relegation from the league for a second time at the end of the 2008/09 campaign although they gained a 1-1 draw here. A Peter Smith own goal had given Nomads the lead but Ged Courtney (yet another former Nomad) claimed a point for Caernarfon in the last minute. There was to be no quick return to the Welsh Premier League this time and ten years passed before The Canaries regained their place. In fact, Caernarfon suffered another relegation in 2010 dropping out of the Cymru Alliance into the Welsh Alliance for the two years that Nomads played in the Cymru Alliance, hence no league matches between our two clubs. Since Caernarfon returned to the top-flight, we have opposed one another on six occasions with honours even. Two wins apiece and two drawn games. The odd fact about those games is that Nomads’ two wins have been by 6-2 and 4-2 yet we haven’t managed a single goal in the other four fixtures!

MORRISON SIGNS NEW CONTRACT AT DEESIDE Connah’s Quay Nomads are delighted to announce that Andy Morrison has signed a new contract with the club. Morrison originally joined The Nomads in November 2015 with the club sitting rock bottom of the then Welsh Premier League. In his first six months in charge, Andy led the team to the Top Six for the first time ever and then went on to qualify for the UEFA Europa League thanks to a 1-0 victory over Airbus at Deeside Stadium. Since then, Morrison’s achievements at the club have gone from strength to strength, following up our first ever Europa League qualification with a second, third and second place finish in the League in the following three seasons respectively, again qualifying for Europe on each occasion. In 2018, Morrison led the side to our first ever Welsh Cup success in beating Aberystwyth 4-1 at Newtown’s Latham Park, and that same stadium was the site of our most recent success this past weekend as we won the Nathaniel MG Cup for the first time since 1996.
Owner Gary Dewhurst commented; “I am delighted we’ve agreed a two year extension to Andy’s contract, taking us through to the summer of 2022. Since his appointment in the autumn of 2015, the club has gone from strength to strength, both on and off the field and Andy has demonstrated outstanding leadership, loyalty and conviction during this time. Continuity is a crucial element of success in football and with Jay Catton recently extending his contract too, Connah’s Quay Nomads are well placed to face the challenges ahead.”

Good Evening, Caernarfon Town were here in October for a phase one game that we won by 4-2. Sounds comfortable, but was anything but, with the visitors giving Lewis one of his busiest nights of the campaign. Our visitors did well to confirm a fifth place finish and left it to Newtown, Met and Druids to scramble in. Newtown won that race and in last weeks first game of phase two produced a result that justified their inclusion by winning 2-1 at TNS. As always the Canaries are welcome visitors, in Sean Eardly they have a good manager and his acquisition of Huw Griffiths to work alongside him might prove to be the scoop of the season. Jamie Crowther and Noah Edwards both played for us and are welcomed back along with their colleagues, staff and supporters. Nomads made the most important signing of our recent history last week. No one has ever had as positive an effect upon this club than Andy Morrison has. He joined us on 2 November 2015. At that time we were on 13 points and second bottom of the League (Jay Catton as care taker manager had got us off bottom the week before with a 4-0 win at Port Talbot). Under his leadership and with the same set of players that were in last place shortly before his arrival, Nomads climbed to their highest ever finish; leading the side to fourth and winning the play off final against Airbus UK Broughton. That giving us the club’s first ever venture into the UEFA Europa League. We have reached the top four on every season he has been here, won the League Cup, The Welsh Cup and beaten Kilmarnock, HJK Helsinki and Stabaek in European competition and reached the final of the Scottish Challenge Cup. His overall record in the League is a sensational played 138, won 78, drew 30 and lost 30. We have netted 240 goals and conceded only 121. In all cup ties we have played 58, winning 37, drawing three, (winning three penalty shoot outs). We lost 18. So Andy’s total competitive record in charge so far is ; Played 196, Won 115, drawn 33 and lost 48. There have been some late changes to our playing roster in the past few weeks. Striker, Craig Curran joins The Nomads with a wealth of footballing experience having played over 150 games in EFL League One and over 100 games in the Scottish Premiership. Craig started his career at Tranmere Rovers and has gone on to play for the likes of Carlisle United, Morecambe and Rochdale in the English system, which included winning the Football League Trophy in the 2010-11 season with Carlisle. Following this, Craig spent five years in Scotland playing for Ross County, Dundee United and Dundee where he would make over 120 appearances across the SPFL and Scottish Championship. Also signing was Aron Williams from Buckley Town. Williams originally came up through the ranks of The Nomads Academy, winning the Welsh Premier U19s league in 2012 and making his debut for the first team as a second half substitute against Prestatyn in the Welsh League Cup in September 2013. Since leaving Deeside, Williams has been playing in the JD Cymru North making over 60 appearances for The Bucks and netting 20 goals in his time at The Globe. Curran wears 19 and Williams will wear the number 21 shirt. Leaving is Nathan Woolfe who has signed for Airbus on a permanent basis. He spent a portion of the 2018/19 season on loan at our Deeside neighbours and recently returned on another loan deal, but that the deal has now been made permanent. Woolfe originally joined The Nomads in January 2016 as one of Andy Morrison’s first signings upon his arrival at Deeside and has since made 81 starts in all competitions for The Nomads, scoring on 15 occasions including famously in the 1-0 victory over HJK Helsinki in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers. Good luck in the future Woolfey! We are also likely to send a couple of our most promising youngsters out on loan to gain first team experience. The Welsh Premier Development team (effectively our second side) sit in second place behind TNS. Our Under 18’s have completed sixteen of their twenty six Welsh National League Reserve and Colts Fixtures. They lead the division with a two point advantage plus a game in hand over Airbus. Two go up into the Reserve division, and with a thirteen point gap back to third placed Cefn Mawr it looks very good. Last Saturday they gained a 3-0 win over Saltney Town Reserves. Tomorrow they play away at Ruthin Town with a 2:30pm kick off. Why not make the short trip to support them, I will be. FIRST TEAM STAFF ANDY MORRISON - First Team Manager Morrison joined The Nomads in November 2015 and oversees all football development at the Club, working with the chairman and staff to create and implement the strategies that will help the Connah’s Quay club reach its’ full potential. Morrison, who left Airbus UK Broughton in July of 2015, was instrumental in helping the Broughton-based club reach the Europa League Qualifying Stages for three successive seasons, finishing 2nd twice and 3rd in the Welsh Premier League between 2013 - 2015. As a professional player, he captained the Manchester City side who won the Division 2 Play Off final at Wembley in 1999 and now represents the Etihad outfit as an Official Fan Ambassador. JAY CATTON - Assistant Manager and Director of Football Previously a player with The Nomads but took on coaching role after four knee operations. Completed UEFA A license and also has UEFA B license in coaching goalkeepers and a BA (Hons) degree in Sports Coaching and exercise Sciences. Catton is not only the Assistant Manager of the first team, but also Academy Director, over seeing all aspects of The Nomads Academy, including the scholarship programme run in partnership with Coleg Cambria, and was also heavily involved in ‘The Quay 3G project. CRAIG HARRISON - First Team Coach Former Middlesbrough, Preston North End and Crystal Palace defender, Harrison joined The Nomads in late October 2018 having previously enjoyed success as manager of TNS, winning the Welsh Premier League on six successive ocassions. Played alongside Andy Morrison during their brief spell together at Crystal Palace.
