NEW NAME, NEW SEASON Welcome to Deeside Stadium for our first game in the newly named JD Cymru Premier League against Cardiff Metropolitan University. While it is our first league game of the season, it marks our 6th competitive game of the season, and fourth for our visitors, with Met having played two Preliminary Round games in the Europa League as well as defeating Llantwit Major in last weekend’s Nathaniel MG Cup clash. Our European matches against Kilmarnock and Partizan were fantastic experiences for everyone involved in the club with the obvious highlight of the campaign being the 2-0 victory away at the team who finished 3rd in the Scottish Premier League last season. Our game with the Met however, ses us re-focus on the league campaign for a new season. We started last season with a 7-0 victory away at Llanelli however the visiting Archers will no doubt provide a sterner test, having won 1-0 here the last time they visited in the Nathaniel MG Cup Semi Final. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “Everyone connected with the club can’t wait for the start of the league programme. Pre-season has been a long and again great jourey for Connah’s Quay Nomads. The reason it’s long is the reward for the success of the previous season. We go again against Cardiff Met on the opening day with a clear vision of having the challenge of European football and a two week break as our reward at the end of the 2019/20 season. It doesn’t get much tougher than Cardiff Met on the opening day - for me, any team that finish above Cardiff Met this season will be in Europe come next summer.”

CONNAH'S QUAY NOMADS

NOMADS DEFEAT RHYL TO PROGRESS IN NATHANIEL MG CUP Connah’s Quay Nomads defeated Rhyl FC by two goals to nil in the second round of the Nathaniel MG Cup on Saturday afternoon. Goals in the 22nd and 24th minutes from Nathan Woolfe and Ryan Wignall respectively were enough to put Nomads into the third round of the JD Cymru League’s league cup competition. • Nomads kicked off domestic campaign in domestic cup competition • Nathan Woolfe scores straight from corner kick • Ryan Wignall secured second minutes later • Professional performance sees Nomads enter the third round Andy Morrison opted to start the likes of Danny Holmes and Callum Roberts in defence, and introduced Ryan Wignall and Nathan Woolfe on the right and left wings respectably to form a fast paced attack with Jamie Insalll leading the line. The bench included Priestley Farquharson, Danny Harrison, and new signing Kris Owens, who had been announced just two hours before kick off having been cleared to make the matchday squad. JD Cymru North side Rhyl meanwhile started captain John Peate, target man Asa Hamilton, and Nomads’ academy product Ben Nash. Both sides showed their will to win in the opening stage of the game, with Rhyl winning a free kick from 30 yards out on three minutes and Nomads forcing two early corners, one of which was headed narrowly wide by Declan Poole. With heavy rain coming down in quick intervals at Rhyl, the Nomads were looking to establish themselves in the game with a number of flowing

attacking movements from the likes of Woolfe and Wignall. On 22 minutes, Nomads took their fourth corner of the game, and it broke the deadlock in unusual fashion as Nathan Woolfe’s delivery from the left corner flag went straight into the goal. Andy Morrison’s side were ahead but didn’t rest on their laurels, as just two minutes later Ryan Wignall made the most of a defensive slip up from Rhyl to run into the area and slot past keeper Keighan Jones at close range to make it 0-2. In the 27th the Nomads again went close from a corner after George Horan headed the ball towards goal only for Jones to deny him with a good stop. In the latter stages of the first half Rhyl hunted for an equaliser, with Horan stepping in to stop Hamilton having a clear run at goal in the 36th minute. Then, in the 42nd, there was a penalty claim from Rhyl when Horan made a tackle on Cai Owen in the Nomads’ area, but referee Tom Owen showed the Lilywhites’ man a yellow for simulation. In one of the last kicks of the first half, Rhyl sent a threatening cross into the Nomads’ area, but George Horan was once again there, making a decisive defensive header to clear the danger for his side. At half time there was a change, with Jay Owen being replaced by Danny Harrison who bolstered the Nomads’ campaign for a clean sheet in Rhyl. The second half saw Nomads take control of the game with some highly efficient attacking moves down the wing coupled with a sturdy defensive set up. In the 47th Michael Bakare went close to getting on the scoresheet when he headed a Nathan Woolfe cross to see it bound close to the Rhyl goal line but go wide for a goal kick. Ten minutes later Bakare was once again in the thick of the action, having a shot from six yards out saved before having his follow up effort cancelled out for handball. With an hour played, the Nomads continued to search for a third goal to solidify their position as the team on top, seeing Ryan Wignall send a powerful effort into the side netting from 12 yards out in the 65th. Two minutes later Callum Morris was denied from getting on the scoresheet by the feet of keeper Keighan Jones, which blocked his effort from just eight yards out as the Nomads’ search for a third went on. As the game entered its latter stages, Rhyl kept in the competition and looked to threaten the Nomads’ goal, but keeper Lewis Brass remained unchallenged thanks to the Nomads’ defence. Changes then saw Bakare replaced by Conor Harwood, and Kris Owens handed his Nomads’ debut as he was brought on in place of Nathan Woolfe. Both players got into the action but were rarely stretched thanks to Nomads’ hold on the affair, with a final chance from Rhyl seeing Sam Molyneux connect with a long ball in the Nomads’ area but shoot wide in the 87th. Full time confirmed Nomads’ victory and place in the hat for the third round of the competition, in which they have reached the semi final stage for the past four consecutive seasons.

UEFA Europa League Second Qualifying Round Thursday, 1st August 2019 Partizan Stadium, Belgrade, Serbia

3-0 FK PARTIZAN

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

NOMADS BOW OUT OF EUROPE IN BELGRADE Connah’s Quay Nomads bowed out of the Europa League at the second qualifying round stage after a 3-0 defeat to FK Partizan on Thursday evening. The Nomads kept the tie goalless at half time, but second half strikes from Tosic, Ozegovic, and Stevanovic saw the Serbians progress to the third round. • Nomads book glamour tie in Belgrade after shock win over Kilmarnock • They frustrated the Serbs for much of the game • Zoran Tosic broke the deadlock • FK Partizan win 4-0 on aggregate The Nomads’ boss made one change from that game, replacing Nathan Woolfe with Danny Harrison, who started alongside ever present captain George Horan and Danny Holmes, with Michael Wilde leading the Connah’s Quay line. Partizan manager Savo Milosevic also made one change, starting Rajko Brezancic in place of Slobodan Urosevic, who assisted Scekic’s goal in Rhyl. The first major chance of the game came in the ninth minute, when pressure from Partizan saw Umar Sadiq go clear in front of goal from 10 yards out, but shot wide in a good opportunity for the hosts to take the lead. Nomads also got into the Partizan end early on, as Sadiq’s effort followed Jamie Insall getting to the byline of the Belgrade area only to see his low cross intercepted in the 7th. Having seen out the opening ten minutes, Nomads were standing up to the Serbian’s exceptionally strong attack, with George Horan and Danny Holmes combining to keep them out. This pattern of Partizan attacks being dealt with by Nomads continued, with

a 23rd minute free kick from Tosic hitting the wall and eventually going out for a Nomads goal kick. Left back Callum Roberts was keeping his cool alongside his teammates, doing well to win a free kick under pressure from Suma in the 28th, and making a decisive tackle 60 seconds later which was followed by a headed clearance from Horan. In the 34th minute, John Disney showed great strength to keep the ball away from Umar Sadiq on the edge of the Nomads area to win a free kick for his side, with George Horan making a headed clearance two minutes later. With 40 minutes played, the Nomads were showing no sign of letting their defensive guard down, stopping Tosic on a run into their area in the 42nd thanks to a combined tackle from Disney and Callum Morris. Three minutes of injury time were awarded as the Nomads came within touching distance of half time with their clean sheet intact. But this was nearly cancelled out when a free kick taken upfield by Lewis Brass was intercepted, leaving the Nomads’ goal open. A long range effort was sent towards the net, but a heroic run and clearance from George Horan kept the ball out with seconds to spare. Despite this late scare, half time saw the sides go in goalless, with Nomads knowing they were well in the tie as they looked for two goals to turnover Partizan’s 1-0 lead on aggregate. The second half commenced exactly as the first, with Partizan immediately taking control of the possession, and Suma firing a 20 yard effort wide on 45 minutes. They then won a free kick in the Nomads’ final third which was taken by Tosic and headed goalwards by Pavlovic at close range, but this effort was well caught by Lewis Brass. But in the 54thminute, Partizan finally found a way through, breaking via Suma, Sadiq, and Tosic, who ran into the Nomads area to finish at close range to make it 1-0 on the night, and 2-0 on aggregate. On the hour mark Nomads made their second off the line clearance, after Sadiq dribbled into the area and sent a chipped effort towards goal to see Declan Poole rise up and head it off the line to deny Partizan a second. Andy Morrison then made a change, introducing Ryan Wignall in place of Danny Harrison to add to Nomads’ attacking options as they sought a goal to get back into the European tie. But in the 69th minute, Ognjen Ozegovic made it 2-0 to Partizan, giving them a 3-0 lead on aggregate, after getting close to the goal and shooting low into the centre of the net. With 20 minutes to play Partizan were now in full flow despite the best efforts of Nomads who were continuing to defend valiantly. In the 72nd, Partizan found their third goal of the night via a low slotted finish from Filip Stevanovic, putting the Serbian side firmly in control with a 4-0 lead on aggregate. Nomads made their second substitution with the replacement of Michael Wilde with Priestley Farquharson, who immediately made an impact as he sent a 20 yard effort towards goal as soon as he came on in the 74th. After 80 minutes, the third and final change from the Nomads bench brought Jamie Insall off in place of Michael Bakare who was chasing down the ball upfront as Connah’s Quay still looked for a goal against a now dominant Partizan Belgrade. The final ten saw Nomads continue their brave performance against Partizan, who had their progression to the third round, where they will play against Turkey’s Malatyaspor. A VIEW FROM THE STAND BY WILL CATTERALL

Hello and welcome to a view from the stand where 118 days since we last turned out at Deeside, we’re back for a new season and ready for another campaign in the weird and wonderful world of Welsh Football. Whilst others have had time to rest and recover in the summer, there has been no off season for Connah’s Quay with the JD Welsh Cup final being followed by immediate preparation for the Europa League. You surely already know how that went, but we’ll cover it here anyway! We’ve added new names in Callum Roberts, Kris Owens, and made a number of re-signings including Ryan Wignall, to once again position the squad as a favourite to challenge at the top of the newly named JD Cymru Premier. The pre season campaign was, as is now the standard expectation at the club, highly professional with clashes against the Isle of Man, Cliftonville, and a trip to Cork to play Aberdeen where we were praised for holding the SPFL side to a 0-0 draw. Few predicted what would follow in our next Scottish clash. Having a club the size of Kilmarnock travel to Rhyl was a huge undertaking off the field, with our board and volunteers working extremely hard alongside Rhyl FC to make the event happen in the first place. A sell out with many more Killie fans travelling to North Wales, it felt like a real occasion, but it ended in disappointment for Nomads as we took the lead before going down 2-1 to a late winner. With an away goal advantage and a home tie heralding the first European game at Killie’s Rugby Park for 18 years, the impetus was surely with the Scots. But ever since we kicked off against them that night in July, the game was slowly turning Nomads’ way, with a second half header from Wignall and a penalty sealing the impossible and securing a trip to Serbian giants, Partizan Belgrade. We don’t like losing, but have no reason to have our heads down over conceding four goals across 180 minutes to a team with the quality of FK Partizan. We held them for an hour at Rhyl before they could break down us down, with a 3-0 loss at the Partizan Stadium a respectable result considering the multi-million pound players we were up against. It’s worth remembering we were in the Huws Gray Alliance (now the JD Cymru North) just eight years ago, and to be starting the season after a summer defeating a top flight Scottish side and standing up to one of Serbia’s top sides goes to show our extraordinary rise in such short time. Work starts today to make sure we can do it all again! Today’s game, following our Nathaniel MG Cup 2-0 win over Rhyl, will be another tough one against Cardiff Met FC who come in energised and focused after their own European exploits in Luxembourg. We welcome all from the capital knowing we’re in for a good game this afternoon. Score Prediction: Nomads 2-0 Cardiff Met Nomads’ Player of the Pre Season: Lewis Brass It’s tough to choose one stand out man after such an impressive summer, but our new No.1 Lewis Brass comes into his first full JD Cymru Premier season ready to go after proving his worth over the past few months. 10 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Cardiff Met

GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN Good Afternoon Well , here we go for another league season. Much is the same, 22 games against all 11 opponents home and away and then the top six playing off in phase two with a further 10 games. We saw Llandudno and Llanelli relegated with Penybont and Airbus replacing them. The League has a new name, we now compete in the ‘Cymru Premier’, the newly named top tier of Welsh football and it will form the peak of the new pyramid system. ‘Cymru North’ and ‘Cymru South’ replace the Huws Gray Alliance and Welsh League Division 1 respectively, with both leagues coming under the FAW’s jurisdiction for the first time. JD will continue their support of Welsh domestic football by becoming the title sponsor of all three divisions, which will henceforth be known as the JD Cymru Premier, JD Cymru North and JD Cymru South, with JD Cymru Leagues becoming the overarching name for the leagues. As usual the other eleven will have to battle to hold on to The New Saints. Whilst there are no easy games in the Cymru Premier League it is true that some are harder than others and this is certainly one of them. Cardiff Met did themselves proud last year in winning the Europa League play off. They were given a very tough tie in facing the top seed in that round. Progress Neidercorn of Luxembourg beat Glasgow Rangers two years ago but they were beaten by today’s visitors in the home leg and only went through on away goals with the aggregate score 2-2. Last year Met won here in the Nathaniel Cup semi final so we know that they are here to present a severe challenge. We welcome their staff, players, officials and supporters. Our Europa League campaign was a great success, the ripples from our defeating Kilmarnock are still racing towards the edges of the European football pond. I covered that in the notes for the Partizan Belgrade program but still the fact that gets home the scale of the achievement to me was that we deserved to win and were the better side. The truth was that we prepared to win , they assumed they would. Whilst we flew out to Cork to play a full blooded practice match against Aberdeen’s first team they played Golf in Spain. The reason we are successful on the field is that we prepare exhaustively off of it. You get back in proportion to what you put in and we put in big style. It was good to test ourselves against a true giant of European football in Partizan Belgrade and although we lost 4-0 on aggregate we did not let ourselves down. There were many successes in our campaign but Lewis Brass in goal was one of them. He had a hard job here taking over from John Danby who was magnificent for the past few years. Also leaving were several of last term’s 14 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Cardiff Met

Nomads. Michael Parker, Rob Hughes and Jon Rushton have moved to Prestatyn Town managed by our former Head Coach Neil Gibson. Andy Owens is down the road at Airbus. Jonny Spittle has moved to Bala Town. Adam Barton ended his loan spell here and is now at Wrexham. Coming in have been Callum Roberts from Newtown and Kris Owens from Bristol Rovers. With Lewis Brass,Priestly Farquarson and Jamie Insall all arriving towards the end of last season we now have a great blend of youth and experience here. We are ready to try to chase down TNS once again. We got under way in the Nathaniel Cup last week with a 2-0 win at Rhyl. In a game dominated by high winds we went through comfortably enough, but Rhyl didnt make it easy. We await the draw for the next round. One draw that was made this week was for the third round of the Scottish Challenge Cup. Last year we made the final of the Irn Bru Cup - this year we hope to do as well in the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup. We start out against Cove Rangers at home on the weekend of the 7th September. We were drawn into a group that sees us play a Scottish team at this stage, separate from the other invitees. However ,if Wrexham get through against Ayr United we could meet them in the following open round. Our under eighteens have moved from the North East Wales league to the much stronger Welsh National Colts league for this season. Matt Sampson and Kevin Manley’s men started out with a fine 4-0 victory over Llangollen Town Reserves with Max Moore (2), James Worthington, Caleb Rose our scorers. They are away to Cefn Albion today and at Airbus on Tuesday. Next Saturday (24th) they entertain Johnstown at the 3G. The first team go to Caernarfon Town next Friday evening before returning here to play Carmarthen Town on Bank Holiday Monday with a 2-30pm kick off. Dean John is refereeing today. He is assisted by Ian Bird and Bryn Jones with Simon Evans as 4th official. Without them we would not have a game and we thank them.. Enjoy the Game . Trevor
