A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Cardiff Met who have made the long journey north to Deeside Stadium. We’ve already won one cup this season and I’d love nothing more than to add more silverware to our trophy cabinet, so hopefully today can be another step towards picking up another trophy. As I mentioned last week, our very own Emma-Clare Hewitt will be attempting to climb Mont Blanc in September to raise funds for MIND, the mental health charity.

NOMADS AIM FOR ANOTHER CUP SEMI Saturday afternoon will see Connah’s Quay Nomads aim to make our fifth successive Welsh Cup Semi Final as we host Cardiff Met at the Deeside Stadium. The two sides have met earlier in the JD Cymru Premier Campaign with The Nomads coming out on top at Cyncoed in October and sharing the spoils here in August. Our last Cup meeting with Met was in last season’s Semi Final which we won 3-0 thanks to goals from Michael Bakare, Callum Morris and John Disney. Both sides come into the game in rich form with The Nomads winning all of our last five games without conceding, while Met sit at the top of the lower half of the league having won three of their last four games in the league, drawing most recently with Penybont last weekend. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “We’ve been very good at home, we’ve been exceptional in fact and we lost the [League Cup] Semi Final last year to Cardiff Met albeit on the day we were magnificent, but that can happen in cup football so there will be no complacency - we’ve done our work, our preparation will be perfect and we’ll go about it in exactly the same way we have one all season at home and like I’ve said many times it’s going to take a very very good team to come o our place and beat us. We’re creating so many chances, we’re scoring goals - I don’t think we’ve conceded now in what must be 480 minutes, so we really are in a good place at the minute.” Connah's Quay Nomads vs Cardiff Metropolitan 5

1-0 CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

NOMADS WEATHER STORM TO STAY TOP AGAINST TNS Connah’s Quay Nomads went four points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier on Friday evening with a 1-0 win over The New Saints at Deeside.

THE NEW SAINTS

In a game ravaged by Storm Ellen, a Craig Curran goal in the seventh minute of injury time in the first half was enough to hand Nomads a significant win in the title race. • Game played throughout strong gales of Storm Ellen • Nomads went close with Horan denied by Harrison • Curran’s 45+7 volley at the death of the first half sent them ahead • Organised Nomads battle to go four points clear Andy Morrison made just one change to his side, replacing Danny Harrison with Priestley Farquharson as he looked to Jamie Insall, Michael Wilde, and Craig Curran to threaten upfront. TNS boss Scott Ruscoe handed starts to Ryan Brobbel, Jamie Mullan and Aeron Edwards, but golden boot holder Greg Draper wasn’t included in the night’s squad. The game began and was straight away impacted the by wind, which was blowing towards the TNS goal in the first half. Nomads looked to use it to their advantage, sending throw ins into the TNS end through Priestley Farquharson, whose long deliveries would prove vital in the game. In the 12th minute there was a lengthy stoppage, as a tackle between Kris Owens and TNS Keston Davies unfortunately forced the Saints’ man to come off for further treatment with Owens seeing yellow. When play got back underway, Nomads were still looking to create chances

regularly, with Wilde shooting just wide from 18 yards in the 19th minute, and a short corner from Declan Poole being whipped wide with a cross-come-shot from Kris Owens in the 22nd. In the 25th, Owens was again in the thick of it as he sent a 30 yard free kick on target that had to be pushed out for a corner by keeper Harrison. Such was the strength of Storm Ellen’s gales that it was hard to predict where the ball would end up once it was kicked into the air, but Nomads continued to react well and work hard in the Saints’ half. One of the best chances of the first half came in the 34th, when George Horan had a close range header kept out by Harrison with a point blanc reaction to deny Nomads the lead. In a rare TNS chance in the 42nd, a well-timed block from Farquharson stopped the prolific Ryan Brobbel from getting a shot away at 15 yards. A minimum of seven minutes’ injury time was indicated at the end of the half, and this went on to be the vital moment of the match for Connah’s Quay. Just as referee Lee Evans was nearing the signal for half time, a long throw in from Farquharson was headed on by Wilde, allowing Craig Curran to strike a brilliant volley over the keeper and in to make it 1-0 for the interval. Boosted by their opener, the Nomads came out in the second half with the wind now against them and knowing they were in for a battle to keep the score in their favour. The ball was soon in the Nomads end with TNS winning a corner in the 49th, but Callum Morris stood on the ball to help regain possession for the home side. Andy Morrison’s side again showed their mettle on 53 minutes, with Danny Holmes coming out on top of a battle with Danny Redmond on the right wing of the Nomads’ half to win a free kick. With an hour played, the Nomads were putting on a great display of game management and discipline across the field, as they continued to stifle TNS’ efforts for an equaliser. The likes of Jamie Insall were helping keep the Saints at bay as well as hunt for opportunities upfront, as his tackle on the halfway line in the 65th helped keep Nomads in possession. Insall then nearly got a chance on goal after good link up play from Roberts and Curran on 69 minutes. From the left wing, Roberts put the ball near him inside the six yard box, but it rolled across the face of goal to just evade him and be collected by Harrison. The game entered its final 15 minutes and with Nomads still looking the team on top, the atmosphere grew at Deeside as the Connah’s Quay faithful began to sense a big result. There were more chances for Nomads to extend their lead, with the ball spilling to Michael Wilde from six yards in the 79th, but again Paul Harrison managed to stop him. It took until the 83rd minute for Nomads to make their first change, which replaced Jamie Insall with defender John Disney who shored up his side’s solid defence. With the full time whistle close, Connah’s Quay’s composure was yet again showing as Callum Morris made another decisive tackle to stop a Saints run in the 87th. Goalscorer Craig Curran was then substituted to a standing ovation, and swapped for Ryan Wignall who added pace to Nomads’ attacking line as the game entered injury time. A minimum of four minutes of additional play were given, and TNS were handed a last chance saloon to equalise in the 92nd when they won a free kick on the edge of the Nomads’ area. The set piece was sent wide, giving Nomads the chance to keep possession, and they did just that well to earn a well deserved win at Deeside. The result sends them four points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier, with seven games left to play. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Cardiff Metropolitan 7

REFLECTIONS

David Rapson looks at The Nomads Welsh Cup record in the 21st century By recording the club’s biggest-ever Welsh Cup win last month, Nomads progressed into the fifth round of this season’s competition to earn today’s home tie with Cardiff Metropolitan University. By defeating Afan Lido 8-0 in the last round Nomads beat their previous best effort in the Welsh Cup, an 8-1 away victory at Guilsfield in 2003/04. This will be Nomads’ 173rd game in the competition since first opposing Rhostyllen SC back in 1951 and the third time we have been drawn to play the Cardiff-based students in the past four years. Last season our two clubs met in the semi-final at Newtown and whilst Cardiff Met started very brightly and dominated the early stages, it was Nomads who settled down after scoring the first goal (a Callum Morris penalty) to eventually win the tie 3-0. The first meeting, four years ago, was staged at the Cyncoed Campus in Cardiff during the 2015/16 season. Cardiff Metropolitan were top of the Welsh League South at the time and went on to win the league and gain promotion to the top-flight. Both sides had chances in the first period which appeared to be heading for a stalemate until Nathan Woolfe tapped the ball home on the stroke of half-time. Ten minutes after the interval a Callum Morris shot was tipped onto the bar by Will Fuller, but Morris reacted quickly to score from the rebound thus earning The Nomads a 2-0 victory and a place in the semi-finals. Nomads’ team that day (5th March 2016) was: John Danby: Wes Baynes, George Horan, Paul Linwood, Sean Smith: Danny Harrison, Nathan Woolfe (Chris Churchman), Callum Morris, Jamie Crowther: Robbie Parry (Ashley Ruane) and Les Davies. (Unused Subs): John Disney and Sean Miller. A semi-final defeat followed at the hands of The New Saints; the second of five such ‘last four’ games for Nomads over a period of eight years during which time we lifted the trophy when defeating Aberystwyth Town 4-1 in May 2018. Furthermore, today’s game marks Nomads’ sixth consecutive appearance at the quarter-final stage. The Nomads’ record in the JD Welsh Cup since 2000

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Cardiff Metropolitan 9

A VIEW FROM THE STAND By Will Catterall

Hello and welcome to Deeside where we have a big afternoon of cup football ahead of us with this JD Welsh Cup quarter final against the always disciplined Cardiff Met. In 2011, when we faced Bangor City in the semi-final at Rhyl, it was billed as one of the biggest games in our history. So it speaks volumes that today, we’re aiming to make it our fifth semi final in a row. Andy Morrison has always took us to at least the semi finals of both the JD Welsh Cup and Nathaniel MG Cup in each of his seasons at the helm of The Nomads, as well as lifting the JD Welsh Cup in 2018 and of course getting our hands on the Nathaniel MG Cup earlier this month. While the afternoon’s focus is the cup, it makes no sense to ignore the momentum we have from the league going into this game. Last week’s 1-0 win over TNS was well deserved and has created a buzz around the club that has been amplified across the game in Wales. With nearly 500 in, the atmosphere was rocking at Deeside despite the game being hampered by hurricane gales – if anything, it seemed to make the occasion rawer with the crowd buying into it.

Taking a look at that list of sides, and remembering that league form counts for nothing in the cup – this year’s JD Welsh Cup really does look open to anyone who fancies it enough on the day. This is testament to the growth of our game over the past few years – no one is a pushover, and no one is unbeatable. Next week, it’s an away trip to Bala – in my view one of the toughest games of the season, and in past seasons, the most important. We know it’s not an easy place to get to, but all support will be massively appreciated next Friday evening – hopefully we both see and hear Andy Morrison’s Red and White Army at Maes Tegid! Score Prediction: Nomads 2-1 Cardiff Met Nomads’ Player of the Week: Kris Owens It was tough to pick a standout player from last week’s game, but Kris Owens got a deserved man of the match prize for his efforts against TNS last week. He’s a great example of a player who bided his time on the bench, got his chance, and grasped the opportunity to become highly effective for us. Watch out for his pin point crosses and great strength should he feature for us today. 10 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Cardiff Metropolitan

In the past, the stadium’s running track has been put down as a cause of a lack of atmosphere at our home ground, but anyone there last week will tell you how it made no difference in a fantastic occasion for all Nomads involved, and we hope many of you are returning this week. The winner today will go through to the semi finals, played at a neutral venue, and will face one of: TNS, Newtown, Caernarfon, Cefn Druids, and either Flint or Prestatyn depending who won in that clash played yesterday.
