SEARCH FOR FIRST WIN CONTINUES Connah’s Quay Nomads will today be looking to record our first victory of the new JD Cymru Premier Campaign. Two frustrating results against both Cardiff Met and Caernarfon Town in the past week have seen two draws despite dominating the majority of both games, and having opportunities to win both games with gilt-edged chances. Carmarthen are also looking for their first victory having lost 3-2 to Aberystwyth on the opening day before falling to a 2-1 defeat at Newtown on Friday night, so both Andy Morrison and Neil Smothers will be keen to get points on the board today. Carmarthen at home was Andy Morrison’s first game in charge back in November 2015 on a day we hit The Old Gold for four, while their only visit to Deeside last season saw a 3-1 victory for The Nomads, so no doubt Morrison will be looking for something similar this time round. Our record at home under Andy Morrison against Carmarthen reads played six, won five, lost one with 13 goals scored and just three conceded. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Carmarthen Town 5

CONNAH'S QUAY NOMADS
NOMADS DRAW WITH COFIS IN FRIDAY NIGHT CLASH Connah’s Quay Nomads played out a 0-0 draw with Caernarfon Town on Friday evening at The Oval in the JD Cymru Premier. Despite a missed penalty for the hosts and multiple chances for Nomads, the spoils were shared in North West Wales. • Disney rattles post as Nomads see penalty claim denied • Caernarfon miss 42nd minute penalty • Nomads push for winner in second half with multiple chances • Caernarfon’s late chance goes wide to confirm nil-nil draw The game followed Nomads’ JD Cymru Premier opener at Deeside last Saturday, which saw them play out a 1-1 draw against Cardiff Met with Jamie Insall netting for Connah’s Quay in his first goal for the club. They were looking to get off the mark with a win against Caernarfon Town, who had proved worthy opponents in the 18/19 season after defeating Nomads 1-0 both home and away in phase two and one respectively. Andy Morrison named a strong starting line up consisting of John Disney, Danny Harrison, Nathan Woolfe, and Jamie Insall upfront. His counterpart Sean Eardley started the likes of Sion Bradley, Darren Thomas, along with ex-Nomads Mike Pearson, Jamie Crowther, and Noah Edwards. The Nomads forced a throw in and free kick within the first two minutes of the game, but neither created a chance despite their efforts to rise up in the area and head towards goal. The first real threat came in the 5th, when a Woolfe cross was whipped close to the right post of the Caernarfon goal, with an outstretching Michael Wilde just missing the opportunity to have a shot from just four yards out.
6 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Carmarthen Town
Caernarfon replied with an attack of their own on 8 minutes, as Leo Smith dribbled through the Nomads area only to be tackled by Callum Roberts before shooting from six yards, with the resulting corner being cleared. There was controversy in the 14th minute, when a Woolfe cross saw Disney hit the post at an angle after a handball claim for a penalty from Nomads was denied by referee Mark Petch, who later booked Andy Morrison for his protests from the side line. The game had an even feel to it as Nomads’ chances were quickly followed by Caernarfon’s own, with Cai Jones getting goal side to drag a shot wide from just six yards in the 16th. This pattern of a Nomads attack, followed by Caernarfon pressing forward, continued into the half, but as both stood up to each other’s threat, it led to few clear goalscoring opportunities up until the 28th, when Lewis Brass did well to save a seven yard Edwards shot. Caernarfon then failed to clear their lines in the 33rd minute, giving Wilde a chance to shoot, but his eight yard effort was held by Cofis’ ‘keeper Alex Ramsay. The 40 minute mark came and although both sides were pushing for an opener, the half looked to be ending goalless, but this nearly all changed when Caernarfon were awarded a controversial penalty for a Callum Morris challenge on 42 minutes. Leo Smith stepped up, but hit his effort off the left post, keeping the scores level at the break, and further motivating Nomads to take their chance to get in front first. The first chance of the second half went to Nomads from a corner kick taken by Wignall, which went to Michael Wilde who sent it just over the crossbar with a bullet header. Two more Nomads crosses went close in the 55th and 58th respectively, with Wilde just missing a Roberts cross, before a second delivery from the left back saw Insall head over at close range. With half an hour to play the Nomads’ ramped up their campaign for an opening goal which could well have proved to be the winner. In the 63rd minute they won a deep throw in which led to two consecutive corners, with the latter seeing Jamie Insall just miss a chance to head a Wignall cross into the goal. On 68 minutes, a great run into the area from Farquharson saw him have two shots, and Disney strike from the edge of the penalty area, but all were blocked inside a packed and chaotic Caernarfon area. The Nomads then introduced Declan Poole in place of Jamie Insall to further boost their campaign for an opening goal, but with just 15 minutes to go the score remained goalless. In the 78th, Caernarfon went agonisingly close when Jamie Breese broke through on goal and fired an effort just wide of the Nomads’ left post. A minute later, Lewis Brass sprung into action to keep at Leo Smith at close range as Caernarfon stepped up the pressure. In the final ten there was an onslaught of attacks in the Cofi area by Nomads, which saw Disney head just over from a corner in the 83rd and a corner won in the 86th which was dealt with by the battling hosts. With two minutes of normal time to play, the Nomads had multiple men in the Caernarfon area, which led to an in swinging cross from Roberts being well kept out by the palm of ‘keeper Ramsay. In injury time there was one more near-twist to the game, when Sam Jones sent a cross-come-shot narrowly wide of the Nomads’ left post for the second time in the half. Despite both sides’ battling performance over the 90 minutes, they took a point each home at full time with the deadlock remaining unbroken. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Carmarthen Town 7

1-1 CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS
CARDIFF MET UNI
NOMADS DRAW WITH STUDENTS IN JD CYMRU PREMIER OPENER Connah’s Quay Nomads bowed out of the Europa League at the second qualifying round stage after a 3-0 defeat to FK Partizan on Thursday evening. The Nomads kept the tie goalless at half time, but second half strikes from Tosic, Ozegovic, and Stevanovic saw the Serbians progress to the third round. • Nomads book glamour tie in Belgrade after shock win over Kilmarnock • They frustrated the Serbs for much of the game • Zoran Tosic broke the deadlock • FK Partizan win 4-0 on aggregate The Nomads’ boss made one change from that game, replacing Nathan Woolfe with Danny Harrison, who started alongside ever present captain George Horan and Danny Holmes, with Michael Wilde leading the Connah’s Quay line. Partizan manager Savo Milosevic also made one change, starting Rajko Brezancic in place of Slobodan Urosevic, who assisted Scekic’s goal in Rhyl. The first major chance of the game came in the ninth minute, when pressure from Partizan saw Umar Sadiq go clear in front of goal from 10 yards out, but shot wide in a good opportunity for the hosts to take the lead. Nomads also got into the Partizan end early on, as Sadiq’s effort followed Jamie Insall getting to the byline of the Belgrade area only to see his low cross intercepted in the 7th. Having seen out the opening ten minutes, Nomads were standing up to the Serbian’s exceptionally strong attack, with George Horan and Danny Holmes combining to keep them out. This pattern of Partizan attacks being dealt with by Nomads continued, with
8 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Carmarthen Town
a 23rd minute free kick from Tosic hitting the wall and eventually going out for a Nomads goal kick. Left back Callum Roberts was keeping his cool alongside his teammates, doing well to win a free kick under pressure from Suma in the 28th, and making a decisive tackle 60 seconds later which was followed by a headed clearance from Horan. In the 34th minute, John Disney showed great strength to keep the ball away from Umar Sadiq on the edge of the Nomads area to win a free kick for his side, with George Horan making a headed clearance two minutes later. With 40 minutes played, the Nomads were showing no sign of letting their defensive guard down, stopping Tosic on a run into their area in the 42nd thanks to a combined tackle from Disney and Callum Morris. Three minutes of injury time were awarded as the Nomads came within touching distance of half time with their clean sheet intact. But this was nearly cancelled out when a free kick taken upfield by Lewis Brass was intercepted, leaving the Nomads’ goal open. A long range effort was sent towards the net, but a heroic run and clearance from George Horan kept the ball out with seconds to spare. Despite this late scare, half time saw the sides go in goalless, with Nomads knowing they were well in the tie as they looked for two goals to turnover Partizan’s 1-0 lead on aggregate. The second half commenced exactly as the first, with Partizan immediately taking control of the possession, and Suma firing a 20 yard effort wide on 45 minutes. They then won a free kick in the Nomads’ final third which was taken by Tosic and headed goalwards by Pavlovic at close range, but this effort was well caught by Lewis Brass. But in the 54thminute, Partizan finally found a way through, breaking via Suma, Sadiq, and Tosic, who ran into the Nomads area to finish at close range to make it 1-0 on the night, and 2-0 on aggregate. On the hour mark Nomads made their second off the line clearance, after Sadiq dribbled into the area and sent a chipped effort towards goal to see Declan Poole rise up and head it off the line to deny Partizan a second. Andy Morrison then made a change, introducing Ryan Wignall in place of Danny Harrison to add to Nomads’ attacking options as they sought a goal to get back into the European tie. But in the 69th minute, Ognjen Ozegovic made it 2-0 to Partizan, giving them a 3-0 lead on aggregate, after getting close to the goal and shooting low into the centre of the net. With 20 minutes to play Partizan were now in full flow despite the best efforts of Nomads who were continuing to defend valiantly. In the 72nd, Partizan found their third goal of the night via a low slotted finish from Filip Stevanovic, putting the Serbian side firmly in control with a 4-0 lead on aggregate. Nomads made their second substitution with the replacement of Michael Wilde with Priestley Farquharson, who immediately made an impact as he sent a 20 yard effort towards goal as soon as he came on in the 74th. After 80 minutes, the third and final change from the Nomads bench brought Jamie Insall off in place of Michael Bakare who was chasing down the ball upfront as Connah’s Quay still looked for a goal against a now dominant Partizan Belgrade. The final ten saw Nomads continue their brave performance against Partizan, who had their progression to the third round, where they will play against Turkey’s Malatyaspor. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Carmarthen Town
THE DEESIDE STADIUM COMES OF AGE BY DAVID RAPSON
Following on to half a century of football at the old Halfway Ground, Connah’s Quay Nomads F.C. moved to the brand-new Deeside Stadium during the summer of 1998. The facilities at the new Stadium were a vast improvement upon the tiny and rather rickety stand at the old ground. Furthermore, the playing surface was flat although somewhat distant from the spectators being laid inside the athletic club’s running track. Nonetheless, local football fans were quick to take a peek at the new ground and a crowd of more than 350 attended the first competitive fixture on Saturday 29th August 1998. Nomads’ opponents that day 21 years ago were Rhayader Town and soon after the half-time interval the home team were four goals to the good, largely thanks to a Jamie Hughes hat-trick. Nomads Team: Phil Collister, Andy Thomas, Paul Jones, Barry Thomas, Jamie Jardine, Carl Smyth, Steve Futcher, Craig Hutchinson, Jamie Hughes, Jon Kenworthy and Neil Davies. Subs: Chris Davies, Darren Wynne and Mike Carroll, all three being used. Goals: Jamie Hughes 13’ 28’48’, Andy Thomas 37’. There was a ‘feel good’ factor around the place on that sunny afternoon as Nomads ran out 4-1 victors and such was the enthusiasm that almost 600 turned up the for the next match a fortnight later against the reigning League of Wales champions Barry Town. Nomads stumbled to a 0-3 defeat, however and then failed to score in each of the following three home games as autumn turned to winter. The wet weather claimed several home fixtures as the drainage proved unsatisfactory. Several fixtures were postponed and those that were played became farcical in the cloying mud. Another home league victory did not arrive until late March 1999 and the team still had eight fixtures to fulfil at the Stadium. Memories of that initial campaign were quickly committed to history. Nonetheless, no sooner had the Millennium arrived than Nomads suddenly became almost unbeatable at the Deeside Stadium. Six league wins and two draws in the first nine home fixtures of 2000 included a 10-0 drubbing of the unfortunate Conwy United with Kevin Davies grabbing half of the goals. 1999/2000 culminated in a 2-0 win over Barry Town in front of our then LOW record ‘gate’ of 688 as Stuart Rain’s brace of goals gifted Total Network Solutions their first league championship – the first of thirteen titles to date! The next season followed a similar pattern with no league home wins until 27th January 2001 and then seven in ten games while 2001/2002 saw the team start and end well but lose 0-6 at home to lowly Llanelli at Christmas. Having never previously finished higher than 7th in the league table, Connah’s Quay gained a creditable fifth place finish in April 12 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Carmarthen Town
2003 on the back of an impressive record on Deeside where ten wins were recorded despite another Christmas ‘blip’ with successive losses at the hands of Oswestry Town and Barry Town. Three disappointing seasons of mixed league results at home were not improved by the standard of the playing surface. Despite recording our 100th home WPL victory in April 2005, ten home defeats that term and a mediocre campaign twelve months later when the Nomads’ faithful witnessed only 32 goals (15 for and 17 against) in 17 matches forced the club’s officials to consider a groundshare option with neighbours Flint Town United. Attendances at the Stadium had been dwindling largely because of the poor football being played on a sub-standard pitch. The visit of well-supported Rhyl FC provided our best league attendance for seven consecutive seasons and thanks to the Lilywhite fans and those of Bangor City our average ‘gate’ continued to hover around 175. Cae-Y-Castell at Flint was our home ground for 2006/2007 and the temporary move proved successful as nine ‘home’ wins propelled the team to another top five finish. Whilst the pitch drainage was better by the time the club returned to the Stadium in August 2007, there was little improvement in league results at the ground. Having won only seven home games in the season leading up to the temporary switch to Flint, the first three terms back on home soil each yielded exactly the same number of successes. In April 2010 Nomads’ lost their 18-year tenure in the top-flight finishing one place off safety and dropping into the Cymru Alliance as six teams were demoted as a prelude to the ‘streamlining’ of the Welsh Premier League. On a brighter note, the two years spent at the lower level proved to be highly successful. Thirty home fixtures at the Stadium produced 23 wins and three draws and a goal tally of 108 scored against 25 conceded. Such impressive statistics resulted in successive title wins and the Nomads were back in the WPL by August 2012. Connah’s Quay Nomads re-joined the Premier League with ambition. Initially, the step-up proved tougher than perhaps some people imagined it would and despite the acquisition of some well-known players progress was slow. A disappointing start to the 2015/2016 season led to Allan Bickerstaff’s departure and Andy Morrison arriving as Director of Football. The transformation since that day has been nothing short of remarkable. Andy Morrison’s first game in charge was on 7th November 2015. The team lay just a single point off the bottom of the league and this afternoon’s opponents Carmarthen Town provided the opposition. Aided considerably by a Nick Rushton hat-trick Nomads won 4-0. To date (including the recent match against Cardiff Metropolitan University) Andy’s 59 Cymru Premier games in charge at the Stadium have brought us 38 wins, 13 draws and a mere eight losses. This afternoon marks Nomads’ 299th home Cymru Premier league fixture at the Deeside Stadium. The preceding 298 matches have brought 133 wins, 64 draws and 101 defeats with a goals for and against ratio of 482:402. Of course, the two seasons in the Cymru Alliance and any number of cup matches in various competitions over the past 21 years must also be taken into consideration, but that is for a future tale. GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN Good Afternoon Welcome to Bank Holiday football at the Deeside Stadium. Carmarthen Town are today’s visitors and we hope their cross-country trip from South to North amongst holiday traffic was not too horrendous. We wish them a pleasant stay in every other respect than on the field. Neil Smothers and his players, Chris Edwards and his officers and The Old Gold’s supporters are very welcome here. We respect the battling style that has kept them in the Cymru Premier in recent seasons. In Lee Idzi , Lee Surman and Liam Thomas they have players who would get in most teams, and we know that if we are to get the points we will have to earn victory. So, not the start we hoped for against Cardiff Met. Both teams came into the league on the back of Europa League giant kills against opposition well ahead of us on the seeding lists. Met are decent opponents and will be in the top six come January. We didn’t do badly but as Andy rightly stated after match it was two points dropped. We were ok though in the way we dominated; missing a penalty , seeing Will Fuller make several good stops and hitting both post and bar. On another day we could have won by four or five. Met tested us once and netted. Jordan Lamb finished well from close range but the pass that set up the goal was outstanding. It was good to see Jamie Insall score, his modesty afterwards in stating “it was just a tap in “ might be true, but that’s what a forward is there to do. I am writing before Fridays trip to Caernarfon and so can’t comment on that. Well two cup draws since last I wrote; In the Scottish Challenge Cup (Tunnock’s Caramel Wafers) we will entertain Cove Rangers on Saturday 7th September with a 5:15pm kick off to accommodate S4C Live coverage. Its a Deeside derby as we both play near the south bank of a River Dee, theirs being the one that hits the North Sea just south of the Granite City. They are currently top of Scottish League Division Two in their first season in it. They were promoted to the Scottish League after winning last years Highland League and then defeating Berwick 7–0 on aggregate in the League Two play-off. They are based in the Cove Bay area south of Aberdeen and play their football at Balmoral Stadium, having left their former home of Allen Park in April 2015. In the Cymru Leagues Cup (Nathaniel MG) we have been rewarded for our 2-0 win at Rhyl in Round Two with an away tie on familiar territory. We go to Guilsfield probably on Tuesday 24th September (to be confirmed). Last December we were there in the 3rd Round of the Welsh Cup and we were 2-0 down at the break; staring an 14 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Carmarthen Town
unwanted upset in the face. We forced extra time with goals courtesy of Callum Morris and Michael Bakare. Then on a mud and rain soaked surface our superior fitness told as Michael Wilde and Ryan Wignall secured a 4-2 success. But it had been almost a giant kill and we will not want to leave it that late this time around. It seems like only a few days ago that we were battling with FK Partizan of Belgrade. One of the players who caught the eye in the very good Serbian side was the 18 year old central defender Strahinja Pavlović who was the only one I’ve seen consistently out jump Michael Wilde in all his time with us. Its not a surprise to see Pavlović sold to Lazio for a fee of €5.5m. Shows what a good side we were up against and how well we did. Partizan went on to beat The Turkish side Malatyspor in the 3rd Qualifying round and lead top Norwegians Molde 2-1 after the first leg in the play off round. Life in the higher level, Welsh National Reserve and Colts League, seems to suit our Under 18’s. Following on from their opening day 4-0 success against Llangollen Reserves they won 2-1 away at Airbus last Monday. On Saturday (after I’m writing these notes) they entertained Johnston Reserves. We have a good young side well worth watching and next Saturday(31st) they entertain Brymbo Reserves up at the 3G.With no first team game to clash with, the opportunity occurs. We await the commencement of the Under 19’s in the Cymru Development League and I will endeavour to keep up to date with both our young sides progress in these notes during the campaign. The first team go to Bala Town this Friday evening before returning here to play Cove Rangers on Saturday 7th September . Druids then visit on Tuesday 10th for a 7:45pm kick off. So busy times. Kevin Parry is refereeing today. He is assisted by Gareth Jones and Martin Roberts with James Walker as 4th official. Without them we would not have a game and we thank them. Enjoy the Game . Trevor
