Connah's Quay Nomads vs Cefn Druids

It was the start of October when we were last at Deeside, and although we’d prefer it to be with our fans, it’s great to be back on home turf where our track record is excellent. Nowadays, the standard of our league is at such a level where you have to be on top of your game to win, and no less will be required tonight – a big welcome to all players, staff and officials from our visitors. Tonight of course marks our first home game since the firebreaker, but we certainly didn’t rest up as a club during the near three-week off period. It was fantastic to see the work our staff put in to keep not just our first team, but players across all levels fit and engaged with the game.

Above all, it kept them enjoying their football even during a lockdown, and that’s testament to the exceptional standards our academy has become known for.

Hello and welcome to our digital programme for tonight’s clash against Cefn Druids where another vital three JD Cymru Premier points are up for grabs.

Jay Catton and our academy team rolled out a phenomenal home programme for all players, including sessions with the likes of Rhys Healey and Frank Sinclair. For our youngsters, hearing from such a high level of professional is an amazing experience and one full of insight that they can use to progress in the game.

Caernarfon was certainly a memorable game – it’s not often your centre back has to go in goal – but what mattered most was the three points and we again did the job. Now in the run up to Christmas we have a number of home games to capitalise on and two live games here against Barry and TNS, which I’m again grateful for so our fans get keep track of the action. Keep safe everyone and back the lads from home this evening!

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Cefn Druids

NOMADS FINALLY RETURN TO DEESIDE Friday night will see The Nomads face Cefn Druids at Deeside Stadium in the JD Cymru Premier. The match marks The Nomads’ first home game since a 3-1 victory over Caernarfon Town on October 6th - since then we have played away at Cardiff Met, TNS, Barry and Caernarfon, picking up two wins and one draw in the process. Druids’ Form Since our last encounter with Druids in early October, Brun Lopes’ side have lost at home to Aberystwyth and Penybont, however picked up their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win at Caernarfon just before the firebreak. Previous encounters The last time Druids came to Deeside was in early September last season, a game in which Priestley Farquharson hammered home his first goal for the club to secure all three points. Our last home defeat to Druids came little over nine years ago with a 2-1 loss in the Welsh Cup. Since that match, our home record reads five wins and three draws against the side from The Rock. From the gaffer Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “Having played 6 of our last 8 games away from home, it’s great to be at the Deeside Stadium. Following on from what was a great result away at Caernarfon, it’s now important we maintain our excellent home record in our quest to cement a top six position come the split. We will also have John Disney and Danny Davies back available after illness.”

NOMADS DRAW WITH LAKESIDERS IN CLASH AT BALA

JD Cymru Premier Friday 13th November 2020 The Oval, Caernarfon, Wales

NINE MEN NOMADS WIN IN LATE DRAMA AT THE OVAL Connah’s Quay Nomads ran out 2-1 winners against Caernarfon Town at The Oval on Friday evening in their first JD Cymru Premier fixture following the national firebreaker. Michael Wilde equalised for Nomads in the second half, whilst an injury time penalty for Callum Morris triggered a frantic finish in North West Wales. • Good saves from both sides kept first half goalless • Hayes’ opener was cancelled out by Wilde’s headed equaliser • Callum Morris converted penalty to seal victory in injury time • Injury time saw four red cards in total, with Roberts and Brass dismissed for Nomads The match saw Nomads return from the firebreaker with a number of players back from injury, including captain George Horan and Michael Wilde who both started. They were joined by the likes of Aeron Edwards and Sameron Dool as Nomads looked to pick up where they’d left their campaign in October, having lost only one league game so far this season. The game started with a Nomads’ attack, as Dool won a corner which was headed wide by George Horan. A bright start from both sides followed, as Caernarfon and Connah’s Quay sought a way into their respective final thirds. Lewis Brass was called into action for the first major chance in the 13th minute, when Hayes got into the Nomads’ area and cut onto his right to shoot, with Brass stretching out well to push the ball to safety. Hayes again looked to cause problems in the 15th, but Danny Holmes was there to stop him with a vital tackle before runs down the wing from Dool saw Nomads move further upfield. Despite pushing up, Nomads were yet to find a clear chance on goal after 20 minutes as they battled hard against the 6

Cofis. Aeron Edwards did nearly send Dool clear in front of goal in the 27th, but the offside flag went up against him. After half an hour the game was goalless but proving a good advert for the JD Cymru Premier, with the well-disciplined defences largely cancelling each other out as half time loomed. It was then that Nomads began to really threaten, with a low header from Aeron Edwards in the 38th being denied by a good save from Caernarfon keeper Josh Tibbetts. Holmes followed up with a powerful effort from the edge of the area, but this was blocked by the Cofi defence. Andy Morrison was also forced to make a change before half time, as Craig Curran went off injured to be replaced by Aron Williams. The second half started in similar fashion to the first with both sides showing their eagerness to get at goal. This saw Danny Holmes take a knock while defending in his own goalmouth just after the restart, but he was given the all clear to continue after treatment. In the 55th minute, Nomads found themselves behind after a Gareth Edwards pass found Hayes in front of Lewis Brass goal where he slotted through to send the host’s 1-0 up. Andy Morrison’s side looked to reply instantly, winning a throw in near the Caernarfon end in the 57th, but it was cleared as the Cofi’s sought to hold onto their lead. After 60 minutes, The Nomads’ manager rang the changes with Brayden Shaw and Callum Roberts coming on to replace Danny Harrison and Sameron Dool. In the 66th, Brass again pulled off an impressive stop against Darren Thomas who shot from 10 yards out, and followed up to collect the following corner kick which swung in close to the Nomads’ goal line. With 20 minutes to play, the Nomads were still seeking a leveller and had been boosted by Brayden Shaw who was playing some dangerous balls into the Caernarfon area. And this finally paid off in the 75th, when a Shaw cross was knocked up into the air inside the Caernarfon box and dropped down to Wilde, who headed into the back of the net to equalise. In the 85th, Wilde nearly secured himself a headed brace when a second effort went off the right post following a free kick, but the move was found offside despite the Nomads forward’s protests. As the game entered the injury it looked likely to finish as a draw, however there would be much more in store at the Oval with late drama leading to almost 10 minutes of additional action. It arrived when Callum Morris went down from a challenge in the Caernarfon area, with referee Lee Evans pointing to the spot in the 92nd minute to hand Nomads a lifeline to take all three points. Morris stepped up as the club’s serial spot kick taker, and made no mistake to score the winner for Nomads in late fashion amid Caernarfon’s protests at the penalty decision. The 93rd minute then saw Sion Bradley sent off for a foul as tempers flared in the final moments of the game, which then saw a challenge from Paulo Mendes on Aeron Edwards spark a melee between the two sides. For their part in the scuffle, Noah Edwards was shown a second yellow card, with Callum Roberts and Nomads keeper Brass both shown red cards, leading to a nine-versus nine men finish with Priestley Farquharson going in goal for Nomads. Connah’s Quay had however done enough to seal the victory, with full time confirming victory in late and dramatic fashion at The Oval.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND By Will Catterall

Hello and welcome to another instalment of our programme from home as our JD Cymru Premier campaign continues here at Deeside this evening. With Covid-19 impacting all of us, it’s been a season like never before, but one thing that hasn’t changed is our positioning in the league table which is once again at the top end. It hasn’t been easy, with the firebreaker interrupting the schedule and a spate of injuries, but last Friday against Caernarfon we once again showed that we can find a way to win whatever the circumstances. We weren’t at our best for long periods, but the never say die attitude we’ve become renowned for came good with Michael Wilde finding our equaliser before Callum Morris’ 90+2nd penalty sealed a 2-1 win in a ferocious finish at The Oval. It of course came at a cost with two red cards for our goalkeeper Lewis Brass and Callum Roberts, but as ever we’ll adapt and overcome, with highly rated stopper Oliver Byrne coming in to cover for us in goal this evening. This week, we also learned of our rescheduled phase one fixture list due to the firebreaker back log, and it makes good reading with lots of home games this side of the year. For the remainder of 2020, our calendar is as follows: • Druids (H) • Barry (H) • Flint Town (H) • Aberystwyth (A) • TNS (H) • Cardiff Met (H) • Flint (A) Five home games out of seven (with Barry and TNS live on S4C) is excellent news, as we’re very hard to beat here and must use this period to solidify ourselves in the top three ahead of the rest of the season. That of course starts tonight against a Druids side who will be eager to prove themselves after our 5-0 win at their place earlier this season. Score Prediction: Nomads 2-0 Cefn Druids Player of the Week: Brayden Shaw Brayden joined us with a solid reputation in the Welsh system for creating goals, and although he was set back with an injury on his debut, he proved it last week at Caernarfon. His introduction as a sub gave us a new element, and his corner kick delivery helped sealed our vital equaliser to get back into the game. We’re looking forward to seeing more of Brayden as the season goes on.
