DERBY DAY AT DEESIDE Tuesday night’s Nathaniel MG Cup game brings our first derby with Flint Town United in almost eight years as both teams look to progress to the semi finals. Since arriving at The Nomads back in November 2015, Andy Morrison has guided The Nomads to the Semi Finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup at every time of asking, however is yet to make the final in the competition, so will no doubt be hoping his side can once again secure a berth in the final four and hopefully go one better this season in making the final of the league cup competition. Getting to this stage has seen away victories over Rhyl and Guilsfield while Flint have beaten Porthmadog and Airbus to reach the quarter finals. Our last competitive encounter with Flint came on Boxing Day 2011 where The Nomads earned a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Gary O’Toole and Rob Jones at Cae-y-Castell. Since then we have played two pre-season friendlies, losing 3-2 at Flint in 2013 and picking up a 4-0 victory in 2016. There will also be a few familiar faces in the Flint team with ex Nomads John Danby and Dom McHugh in the Silkmen’s squad. Danby made 175 starts for The Nomads in all competitions before leaving this past summer while McHugh was part of our academy setup and broke into the first team squad last season.

JD Cymru Premier Friday, 25th October 2019 Park Avenue, Aberystwyth, Wales

1-1 ABERYWTWYTH TOWN

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

NOMADS STAY UNBEATEN WITH DRAW AT SEASIDERS Connah’s Quay Nomads drew 1-1 with Aberystwyth Town on Friday evening at Park Avenue in the JD Cymru Premier. A Jamie Insall goal on 37 minutes sent them ahead, but a 90th minute spot kick from Matthew Jones ensured the score was level at full time. - Insall scored third in three games - End to end game played out at wet Park Avenue - Aberystwyth put pressure on in second half - A 90th minute Matthew James penalty sealed draw The Nomads came into the game as league leaders following a dramatic injury time own goal away at Cardiff Met, whilst Aberystwyth were looking for their first win after three successive draws. Andy Morrison made no changes to his starting lineup, with Jamie Insall leading the line alongside Michael Wilde with Declan Poole and Michael Bakare supporting them. Meanwhile, Aberystwyth’s starting eleven included ex-Nomads Wes Baynes and Ryan Edwards. The encounter kicked off at a fast pace, with a low driving cross from Priestley Farquharson being sent out for a corner - the resulting delivery saw a Jamie Insall header cleared off the Aberystwyth goal line in the 1st minute. In the 5th, Aber hit back with their first chance, sending a dangerous cross into The Nomads’ area which was collected by ‘keeper Lewis Brass. On 11 minutes, he was again called into action, denying the Black and Greens the lead by tipping a header from a corner ball over his crossbar. With 20 minutes played the game was goalless, despite lots of proactive play from both sides which had seen Declan Poole score but have the goal ruled out due to Michael Wilde being found offside.

6 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Flint Town United

The pouring rain did little to put off the teams’ urgency for a goal, as an end to end feel to the game continued throughout the second half. After a Nomads corner came to nothing in the 27th, play from Paolo Mendes saw Lewis Brass pull off another good save in the 29th. After a goal mouth scramble in the Aberystwyth end led to another corner ball for Nomads on 32 minutes, Jamie Insall used his attacking prowess to get through on goal in the 35th, but was stopped for offside before he could strike. But two minutes later he made no mistake, converting from a tight angle after a low cross from Michael Bakare, who had beaten Wes Baynes to win the ball, sending Nomads 1-0 up with a strike low into the bottom right corner of the Aber net. Aberystwyth continued to attack well, winning a corner during injury time of the first half, but Nomads held onto their lead to take it into the interval with them. The Nomads started the second half brightly with Farquharson bursting into the Aber box within the first minute of the second half, but ultimately sending his cross over the bar. As The Nomads continued to attack, Danny Holmes booked for a foul that halted an Aber counter attack and the Seasiders sent a powerful effort on goal in the 57th, with Brass once again on hand to deal with it. Set pieces were being won all over the field by both sets of teams, with Aberystwyth looking to utilise corner kicks, forcing another great save from Brass in the 64th in their search for an equaliser. After a sustained period of pressure from Aberystwyth, The Nomads tried to hit back with a corner ball after a Declan Poole effort was denied in the 69th, but the kick came to nothing. Insall then went for his brace going clear on goal in the 72nd, but was stopped by the offside flag. As the latter stage of the game approached, both Nomads and Aberystwyth were digging deep to find the result they wanted. Whilst Andy Morrison had brought on Callum Morris who returned from injury to replace Farquharson, Aberystwyth introduced two forwards in Alex Boss and Geoff Kellaway to boost their attacking options. The chances were still coming thick and fast into the 85th minute, when Callum Roberts got past Baynes and crossed to Wilde, who couldn’t send his header on target. Aberystwyth’s efforts to find a goal carried on into the 90th minute, when they finally equalised thanks to a Matthew Jones penalty kick. The spot kick was awarded after referee Iwan Griffiths judged that Jay Owen had handled the ball in blocking an Aber shot. Matty Jones made no mistake in the final minute as he fired into the bottom right corner to equalise late on. The draw saw Nomads stay at the top of the JD Cymru Premier for the evening, and leaves them unbeaten in the league after 12 games.

JD Cymru Premier Saturday, 19th October 2019 Cyncoed Campus, Cardiff, Wales

0-1 CARDIFF MET

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

NOMADS GO TOP IN LAST GASP WIN OVER MET Connah’s Quay Nomads rose to the top of the JD Cymru Premier with a 1-0 win against Cardiff Met thanks to a 93rd minute own goal on Saturday afternoon. The game saw two of the JD Cymru Premier’s three unbeaten sides go head to head. Since meeting at Deeside in the opening game of the season and playing out a 1-1 draw, Nomads and Cardiff Met had remained undefeated after 10 games, and sat 2nd and 6th in the table respectively. Connah’s Quay travelled to the capital after a 4-2 win over Caernarfon Town to bounce back from their Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup defeat at Partick Thistle in Glasgow the week before. Andy Morrison made no changes to his line up, with centre half George Horan captaining alongside the likes of John Disney and Priestley Farquharson, with Jamie Insall leading the line and looking to continue his goalscoring form after getting a brace against Caernarfon. Cardiff Met were meanwhile looking for their first win in two, following draws with Airbus and Aberystwyth. Their coach, Christian Edwards, started the likes of Jordan Lam, Emlyn Lewis, and Chris Baker. The game began with Nomads on the front foot, winning set pieces including a deep throw in into the Met area, taken by Priestley Farquharson, and a corner kick inside the first seven minutes. The first keeper to be tested was however Nomads’ Lewis Brass, who dealt with a Jordan Lam effort from the edge of the area in the 14th. After a corner from Nomads in the 16th minute helped keep the pressure on the Cardiff Met final third, Jamie Insall went within eight yards of the goal in the 18th, but his low effort was well saved by keeper Alex Lang to deny him

a goal. With 20 minutes played the game had somewhat settled, with the likes of Jamie Insall and Michael Bakare making good runs into the Met end but without finding the breakthrough they were looking for. Cardiff Met then grew into the game and began to threaten, with Kyle McCarthy nearly scoring a goal from a corner ball in the 30th. His delivery swung close to the near post, but Lewis Brass was able to catch it with aid from the inside of the post to stop it going over the line. The Students then won free kicks in the Nomads half in the 34th and 36th minutes, but neither led to a goalscoring opportunity thanks to Connah’s Quay’s well disciplined defensive shape. As the half went on both sides were still actively looking for an opener, with Callum Roberts seeing a shot go wide from around 10 yards out. Met then had a late chance to go 1-0 up in the 44th, when Chris Baker got into a good position from around seven yards out, but didn’t get enough on his shot, allowing Brass to sweep and collect comfortably. The second half started similarly to the first as Nomads again went on the attack. In the 47th, Declan Poole crossed to Priestley Farquharson, who sent a well taken header towards goal only for keeper Lang to collect it. Whilst Nomads kept the pressure on upfront, George Horan’s defensive line was continuing to soak up chances from Cardiff Met who were, like Nomads, seeking a goal at every opportunity. As the hour mark approached, Andy Morrison rung his first change, replacing Michael Bakare with left sided midfielder Kris Owens in a substitution that proved vital at the last moment. In the 66th, a free kick for Nomads from around 25 yards out was sent in by Owens, with the ball just evading the outstretched boot of Insall who tried to poke it into the net from close range. A second substitution then saw Jay Owen replaced by Sameron Dool as the deadlock continued at Cyncoed Campus. On 73 minutes, Jamie Insall sent a cross close to the goalmouth where Michael Wilde was waiting, but he was tackled by Bradley Wooldridge before he could get a shot away. In the 78th Nomads went agonisingly close to scoring, when a Priestley Farquharson header caused problems in the Met area, allowing Declan Poole to have a close range half volley which was blocked on the goal line amid a packed six yard box. On 81 minutes there was drama at the other end, when Emlyn Lewis got close to the Nomads goal and nearly scored from within six yards, but Lewis Brass stepped in to tip the bouncing ball over the crossbar. In the 85th, there was another chance for Nomads which saw Farquharson just miss out on a low diving header aimed for the bottom right corner, but the opportunity went begging as he narrowly missed out on the ball. As the game entered an additional four minutes of time it was looking set to be a 0-0 draw at full time, but this all changed in the third minute of injury time in bizarre circumstances. Nomads won a free kick from around 25 yards out, which was initially taken by Sameron Dool. But set piece was blocked and went to Kris Owens, who whipped the ball into the area and near the six yard box, where Woolridge was unfortunate enough to rise up and see an attempted headed clearance go past Lang and into the back of the net. The own goal gave Nomads a dramatic late winner, which sends them top of the JD Cymru Premier and keeps them unbeaten after 11 games in Wales’ top flight. GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN Good Evening Welcome to a rare midweek match , its a Quarter Final in the Nathaniel MG Cup. In this competition we have reached the last four semi finals; losing them all 1-0. We hope to be in the draw for a national semi final which will be played on the weekend of November 23rd. We supporters love matches under the lights, especially when the opposition are our next-door neighbors; and in a match against high-riding oppositions challenging for promotion to the Cymru Premier League, Flint Town United are not just rivals they are also friends. Many of our supporters watch them when we are not playing, and vice versa. Off the field both clubs have announced that they are in deep discussion over independently sharing a redeveloped Cae y Castell ground , brought up to UEFA standard by considerable investment from F.A’s ,Councils and Clubs. A move of 3.3 miles to the West. Whilst not popular with everyone, my view is that to have a fully enclosed ground with no running track and a hybrid grass pitch similar to those in the English Premier League would be great. Having income from food and drink, currently denied us, and a stadium management that actually supports us, would make a pleasant change. A covered end which could enhance our ultra’s volume so that Mr Shouty and company could generate a real atmosphere would also be good. The youth and development wing would remain at our excellent base at The Quay 3G and its clubhouse, best of both worlds in my opinion and for those that bemoan the extra travel I must point out that the distance from the Stadium to Flint is less than the distance from the Stadium to Queensferry Asda! Needless to say I am not neutral on this and firmly support the idea. Flint are welcome. They have good support and with them being on a great run of form and scoring freely (31 goals from their last seven matches including a 2-1 giant kill against Airbus in this competition). Then this is a big game. Niall, his staff and the players are welcomed; as are the officials of the club. Since the last home game we have hit the road twice. The passions of football, its highs and lows cannot be better illustrated than in those games. Against high flying Cardiff Met we put in a resolute display and seemed likely to come away with a well deserved goalless draw when in the 93rd minute one of the league’s best defenders had a melt down and inexplicably headed into his own net. Out of nowhere we had won. Then on a monsoon drenched evening at Aberystwyth against a team at the wrong end of the table we seemed certain to scrape a 1-0 success through Jamie Insall’s first half goal, but we conceded a 90th minute penalty and the high became a low. We would have taken four points from the two games but expected them to occur the other way around. That’s twelve games unbeaten, and we are just one league game away from beating the twelve game unbeaten league run at the beginning of the 2016-17 campaign – which was our best ever unbeaten record in the Cymru Premier. Unbeaten and 2nd in the league, so all in all, not bad; its just that we know it should be better.

Also undefeated since the start of the season, last weekend saw the first league defeat for our U19 team as they lost out to Caernarfon Town in the JD Cymru Premier Development League, however our U18, U16, U14, U12 and our newly formed Ladies team all mirror our first teams achievement as all are still unbeaten in domestic league action. Our ladies team, only six games in to existence have also proved their ability, netting 38 goals, 24 of which have come in league competition, whilst also progressing through two rounds of the FAW Women’s Cup. Ladies Team Following our first team’s unbeaten streak our recently formed Ladies team also boast an unbeaten start to their league campaign. Quite remarkable with them team only formed two months ago with Sara Hilton and Cassie at the helm. The new ladies team has been followed by our newly formed U8s, U10s and U12s girls teams off the back of our great community project led by Leighton Sumner and Jordan Parry. The open girls sessions for four to twelve year olds are ran every Thursday from 5pm-6pm at The Quay 3G with some great coaches also in Steve Boyes, Elise Hughes and Andy Molyneux. Another landmark for the club was the three teams facing Chester FC recently in some great games. Academy and Scholars Feeders to our first team, our Nomads Academy Coleg Cambria scholars U18s and U19s are both undefeated in league and cup action with both sides also top of their respected leagues. The addition of Gareth Richards to the program in a full time position leading this section has been immense and pushed the program onto new heights already in such a short space of time. Gaz also added coaches and analysts staff Richard Cusato and Antonio Magalhaes whose commitment has been exceptional in their first season at the football club and both been great additions. Long term staff Kevin Manley and Matt Sampson continue their great work with our U18s who currently sit one point from top with seven wins from seven in the Welsh National Reserve League. Gareth Richards U19s suffered their first defeat of the season but Gareth and Jordan Parry’s side have recorded some great wins and performances to date in both the U19s league and North West Category 1 League. The great start to the campaign has also been followed by our academy cup squads at under 12, 14 and 16 who have won all 12 out of 12 games in the initial academy cup phase defeating Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, Rhyl and Airbus and qualifying for the Super Six stage.Across these groups we possess four UEFA B coaches and 2 UEFA B candidates and with the new Skill Acquisition and Youth phase curriculum with so much great work by coaches Dale Johnson and Matt Griffiths U16s, Leighton Sumner and Mick Nickson U14s and Ben Nash and Anthony Weaver U12s. A fantastic start for all with great work from so many top staff and players. Huge well done to all involved. This Friday comes the crunch. We will find out if we deserve to be top of the League. In Cymru Premier football the yardstick is always a match against The New Saints. Are we good enough? Its Friday night at 7:45pm to find out. We follow that with another six pointer as we make the long trip South for the third time in a month by playing Barry Town. John Jones is refereeing tonight. He is assisted by Gareth Jones and Connor Fowler with Mark Petch as fourth official. Without them we would not have a game and we thank them. Enjoy the Game . Trevor
