A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR Welcome back all to our digital programme after a lengthy pause in Welsh football proceedings just before Christmas. Thankfully, the situation is now better, and we once again have the all-clear to get back into it. Thanks also to Chris Hughes and his Newtown side for travelling up today as we officially resume phase one. Before we go into things on the field, the latest lockdown once again showed the best of what we have at Connah’s Quay Nomads. Our academy has continued to lead the way in the remote training and learning sessions we provided to keep our youngsters healthy and happy, Supporting each other during these times when mental health is tough for many is so important, and as a club supporting the work of Mind, we’ve certainly gone the extra mile – hundreds actually, as Jay Catton led the way in January with his amazing 200 mile running challenge where he raised over £5,000. To date, we’ve now topped over £10,000 with the help of our February academy initiative which saw our players complete a mile of activity per day to keep active and raise money for the cause, with the club donating £5 for every player that completed all 28 days. This is an incredible achievement considering the circumstances we’re all going through, and we should be very proud of all our efforts. During the break, we’ve been busy in the transfer window – welcome to Deeside to Johnny Hunt, Tom Moore, Doug Tharme, Rio Glean and Neil Danns who are now all part of the squad, who have been getting in some quality training within the rules during lockdown. After a brief ‘pre season’ of sorts, it’s back to business in the Cymru Premier today and all is to play for at the top of the table. We’re also set for one of our busiest periods ever – playing the rest of phase one, phase two, and the cup all within the space of just over 3 months. It’s a tough ask at any level, but as usual at Connah’s Quay, we say bring it on!

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown

WELCOME BACK! Saturday afternoon sees The Nomads return to JD Cymru Premier action with the visit of Newtown to Deeside Stadium The match is the first competitive time we have faced The Robins since November 2019, with both lockdowns in the past 12 months resulting in our matches with Chris Hughes’ side being postponed or cancelled. Today’s opposition With both sides having not played competitive football since late December, there isn’t much in the way of a form book, however, Newtown currently sit 9th in the league table, having won the first game back in the Cymru Premier on Tuesday night against Penybont. Prior to that, they had not won in their previous five games, with draws at Caernarfon and Barry, whilst losing out to TNS, Cardiff Met and Bala. Previous encounters The Nomads’ record at Deeside Stadium has been a 100% one since Andy Morrison’s arrival in 2015, with six successive victories, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two, with the most recent victory coming in a 3-1 win back in November 2019. From the gaffer Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison spoke to give his thoughts; “We’re back playing football, back doing what we want to do - picking up from where we left off hopefully, we were on a fantastic run of form, playing really well and it was taken from underneath us as it was for every other team in the league, so it’s just great to be back preparing and seeing that end line - we’ve had to wait for a few weeks now and it’s great. I’ve woken up the last couple of morning with a nervous stomach which I haven’t had now for 2-3 months and it just means that football’s coming back again!” Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown

NOMADS CONTINUE WINNING RUN AGAINST CARDIFF MET Goals from Michael Wilde, George Horan, and Aron Williams saw Nomads extend their winning run to seven games in their final home fixture of 2020. • Wilde heads in early opener • Emlyn Lewis equalised to ensure tight encounter • Horan headed Nomads back in front • Aron Williams opens club account to seal victory The game saw Nomads return to Deeside in fantastic form, having won six games in a row with the most recent a 2-0 victory against TNS in a top of the table JD Cymru Premier clash. Andy Morrison made two changes from that line up, with captain George Horan starting in place of Priestley Farquharson and Brayden Shaw replacing the suspended Craig Curran. The Nomads manager also handed John Disney his 125th start in a milestone for the Nomads defender who has seen play-off, Nathaniel MG Cup, JD Cymru Premier and European success in his time at Deeside. Cardiff Met were meanwhile looking to bounce back from a 1-0 midweek defeat against Penybont having taken only one point from their last three. Manager Christian Edwards named a line up including the likes of Emlyn Lewis, Charlie Corsby and target man Eliot Evans. The game began and it took only three minutes for a goal to come, as Michael Wilde got on the end of a Brayden Shaw cross to head in from the edge of the six yard box. Boosted by their lead, Nomads continued to attack the Met final third, winning a series of throw ins and corners within 6

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown

the first 10 minutes. As the game went on the weather conditions worsened, with both sides battling against the strong winds and heavy rain at regular intervals. With 15 minutes played the Nomads were on top and playing much of their football in the Met half, but the visitors countered to equalise via Emlyn Lewis in the 18th. After a looping ball into the Nomads area which looked to have beaten the offside trap, Lewis was able to tap in from close range to bring the score level at 1-1. Cardiff Met’s equaliser ensured a tough encounter at Deeside, as they sought to block Nomads’ efforts to retake the lead. These came via the likes of Aron Williams, who made a number of great runs down the wing only to find his final pass blocked or intercepted. Half time came and the Nomads were dominating the possession, but had yet to find the finish to restore their lead thanks to some tough defending from the Students. Andy Morrison made his only change of the game during the interval, replacing Brayden Shaw with Kris Owens who was returning from injury. He also instructed his captain, George Horan, to push forward into an attacking role to add to Nomads’ firepower upfront. And the skipper got involved straight away as Nomads quickly targeted the Met area with an array of long throw ins, corner balls and runs down the wings. After 50 minutes, Danny Davies found Wilde who headed just over from around eight yards, and in the 56th a Kris Owens cross turned to a shot as Met keeper Alex Lang was forced to come off his line to deal with it. With an hour played, the Nomads were still being frustrated by the Cardiff Met defence and faced a big 30 minutes in order to get a result. However, in the 64th, George Horan stepped up to make Nomads’ pressure finally pay off as he beat the keeper with a diving header at close range from a Declan Poole cross. Nomads’ lead was restored and they looked to stay on top as the game entered its latter stages, seeing a close chance to score a third in the 76th when a Kris Owens corner was sent off the underside of the Cardiff Met bar. Three minutes later, Nomads countered a Met throw in deep in their own half to break via Aron Williams and Declan Poole, with Poole running through on goal only to be denied by Lang. In the final 10, Cardiff Met pushed for a late equaliser, seeing a throw in go into the area in the 84th amidst a packed area, but they were unable to get a shot away before Nomads cleared to safety. However, Nomads withstood this late attack and countered to seal victory via Aron Williams in the 88th minute. He ran onto a ball from Davies to coolly send the ball over the keeper to open his club account and make it seven wins in seven for Connah’s Quay.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND By Will Catterall

It’s been a long wait to return to Deeside, but today we finally do that as we resume our phase one campaign with this clash against Newtown. 2020/21 will be remembered as a season like no other, but in a campaign of few certainties, one constant has been Nomads’ professionalism as a club in the face of a challenge. Not only have we impressed on the pitch, with just one loss from sixteen JD Cymru Premier games so far – we’ve set the standards for club activity during the lockdown. Our academy online programme is thriving, and as we’ve been allowed to train throughout, we’ve been staying sharp with some friendly games against quality opposition. Not to mention some highly encouraging signings, which we’ll come onto later. Now, where we were in terms of the season? Well, we’re the form team in the JD Cymru Premier as it stands, on a run of seven straight wins. Most recently, we pulled off a storming 2-0 victory over TNS and then a 3-1 win over Cardiff Met, both at Deeside just before Christmas. This run has put us second in the table, four points off top with a game in hand. So it’s well and truly all to play for as we come into this game with 16 games left to play in the season overall. Coming up after this is the derby at Flint on Tuesday evening, followed by Penybont away on Saturday the 13th, and then Bala away on the following Tuesday. We don’t yet know if any of these games are confirmed to be on Sgorio, but keep an eye on our socials for any updates on that. This afternoon is also a chance to potentially see some of our new signings in action, as Johnny Hunt, Tom Moore, Doug Tharme, and Rio Glean all joined during the break, giving us even more options within the squad as we enter this vital phase. We’ve also made one of the biggest signings for Welsh Football since Gary Taylor Fletcher joined Bangor a few years ago, as another highly experienced professional has arrived at Deeside. Boasting over 400 Football League appearances, Neil Danns joined this week after an illustrious career with the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace and Leicester City. Senior pros like him tend to thrive at this level, and he’s an extremely exciting addition as we go all out for the strongest possible finish to phase one. Score Prediction: Nomads 1-0 Newtown 8
