OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS FOR NOMADS Tonight’s game sees The Nomads have the opportunity to open up a six point gap at the top of the league if results elsewhere go in our favour. After last weekends victory at Barry, we currently sit three points clear at the top of the league and with both Bala and TNS playing tonight, who are third and fourth respectively, and dropped points by those two sides could see The Nomads open up a six point gap at the top of the table with a win at Deeside. Our last encounter with Newtown ended in a 1-1 draw at Latham Park back in late September after Michael Bakare skillfully equalised after Newtown had taken the lead through Nick Rushton. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “We have a fully fit squad to choose from with Kris Owens being the only doubt. Training have been really bright and intense this week - competition for places is strong and every players know they have to be ready and at the top of their game to stay in the team. Our games against Newtown have always been tight affairs with the odd goal bein the difference and after last weekend’s result, their tails will be up. We know that if we start right and our quality matches our intensity we will be a very hard team to beat.”

JD Cymru Premier Saturday, 9th November 2019 Jenner Park, Barry, Wales
0-4 BARRY TOWN UNITED
CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS
NOMADS RAMPANT IN BIG WIN OVER BARRY Connah’s Quay Nomads went three points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier table with a 4-0 win away at Barry Town’s Jenner Park on Saturday afternoon. They found themselves 3-0 up at half time thanks to strikes from Jamie Insall and Michael Wilde, with Insall sealing his brace to find Nomads’ fourth in the second half. The game was highly anticipated as a clash between the JD Cymru Premier’s top two sides, with Nomads sitting in first place after a 1-1 draw with TNS in the previous week. Barry Town were meanwhile second, having succumbed to their first loss of the season seven days earlier, losing 4-1 to Caernarfon Town at The Oval. With Callum Roberts and John Disney suspended, Andy Morrison brought stalwart centre half Danny Harrison into his back four, whilst Sameron Dool was handed a start in the midfield. Goalkeeper and academy product Callum Manley also earned a call up to join the squad in South Wales. Morrison’s counterpart Gavin Chesterfield named a side full of household Barry names, including Jonathan Hood, Kayne McLaggon, and Chris Hugh The game got off to an even start with both sides looking to implement their carefully devised game plans. Danny Holmes sent a throw in into the Barry area in the first minute, but the hosts cleared and went onto enjoy an early period of possession in the Nomads’ half, although with no threats to Lewis Brass in goal. Nomads’ first chance of the day came in the 11th, when a Sameron Dool corner ball was headed just wide by captain George Horan who rose high to meet it in the area.
6 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown
In the 16th minute, Danny Holmes was again threatening with his throw ins into the Barry area, but this move was countered and saw Kayne McLaggon run towards goal with Brass sweeping to collect for Nomads. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute, thanks to slick move upfield from Nomads. Starting from Danny Holmes at the back, the ball went to Dool in the centre midfield, who surged up the pitch and laid on Bakare who was waiting on the left wing. Bakare crossed perfectly to Michael Wilde, who beat keeper Mike Lewis at his near left post to head the travelling Nomads into the lead. There was then drama on 25 minutes, when Barry forward Jonathan Hood was dismissed by referee Dean John. Initially cautioned with a yellow, he appeared to dissent and was then a shown a straight red in a further blow to the trailing hosts. Nomads sought to exploit their one-man advantage, and were playing some free-flowing and expansive football deep into the Barry half. This was seen with runs from the likes of Michael Bakare, who beat multiple defenders on his way into the Barry area, where his shot from around 12 yards out turned out to be tame was collected by keeper Lewis. Nomads’ attacking play paid off in spectacular fashion on 35 minutes, when after a Declan Poole shot from 15 yards was blocked and went into the air, Jamie Insall attacked it with an acrobatic bicycle kick at close range near the left post, sending it just inside the right post at a tight angle. Now with a 2-0 lead and into the latter stage of the first half, there was no let up from the relentless Nomads, who continued to get at the Barry final third and win set pieces including a 25 yard out free kick and corner ball. And just as the half looked over, Nomads struck with a sublime move upfield, once again driven by Dool. He picked up the ball in the centre circle, and shot from 12 yards out only to be saved - but Wilde was there to tap in the rebound, sealing his brace, and a resounding 0-3 lead at the break. The second half started brightly with Andy Morrison’s men sticking to their disciplined shape to frustrate a Barry Town side looking for a way back into the encounter. But only nine minutes after the restart, Nomads further tightened their grip on the game with a fourth goal in the form of a brace from Jamie Insall. The Nomads’ number 10 got on the end of a great run and low cross from Priestley Farquharson to send a diving header in near the Barry goal line. 4-0 up in less than an hour, Andy Morrison made his first change around the 60th minute when he replaced Bakare with Nathan Woolfe, whose tricky style and pace further complimented Nomads’ free flowing style. In the 64th, Connah’s Quay proved their defence remained alert despite their big lead, when George Horan blocked McLaggon from getting a goal back after he tried to convert a cross from Drew Fahiya, who had beaten the offside trap to break into the Nomads’ area. A minute later, Dool was seeking a goal to top off an excellent individual performance, going on a run before shooting from 10 yards, with the effort saved by Lewis. As the 70th minute passed, the Nomads were showing great composure as they coolly passed the ball around their half and the midfield without allowing Barry a chance on goal. In the 76th, Conor Harwood came on in place of Michael Wilde as Andy Morrison introduced fresh legs to keep Nomads’ momentum going. On 77 minutes, Danny Holmes found himself unlucky with a 20 yard strike on a half volley blocked in the area on its way to the Barry goal. Inside the final 10 minutes, the Nomads’ academy system celebrated another JD Cymru Premier debut for one of its graduates, as 17 year old Sam Williams was introduced in place of Sameron Dool. The substitution marked Williams’ second appearance for Nomads in as many weeks, as he made his club debut in Nomads’ 4-1 victory over Flint Town in the Nathaniel MG Cup quarter final. And his job was a simple one for the remaining minutes of play, as Nomads continued to enjoy control of the game throughout the 90th and two minutes of injury time. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown 7

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown
GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN Good Evening Welcome to Newtown . Tonight’s visitors are always formidable opponents and are to be given the respect they deserve. One of the smallest playing budgets in this league but certainly one of the biggest hearts. Chris always presents opposition with a determined outfit who keep Great shape and are so well drilled. If you give these Robins an inch they take a mile. We welcome their Directors, Management, players and supporters. All wins are good, but some are better than others. We set out to meet a Barry side who were level on points with us at the top of the table but with a game in hand. A real six pointer and surely a very difficult game in which returning from the mammoth journey with a point would do just fine. Well Andy just doesn’t think that way. Instead we were impressive from the off. Everyone played well and after an initial bit of ineffectual probing in which Barry played a bit of keep ball in their half we started to terrorise them with pacey incisive running. Sameron Dool showed the promise that I am sure is going to make him a big player in this league ( incidentally after the match FAW officials who witnessed the match asked if we could find a Welsh Grandparent in his family tree), Declan Poole put in as good a display as he has done for us. Baks crossing threatened their defence and everyone did their jobs. With a spine of George,Danny and Wildy then the youngsters have every chance to progress. It was a great team display. When the first goal came on 20 minutes it seemed overdue, a trademark Michael Wilde header fro a deep Bakare cross. Barry were chasing shadows and when John Hood swore to the face of the referee and saw the inevitable Red Card their was only going to be one outcome. Jamie Insall is a busy player always chasing and harrying opponents but he’s a finisher too. His perfectly delivered scissor kick pt us two up . Michael Wilde profited from excellent Sam Dool work to steer home after the keeper parried and it was 3-0 at the break. We were not flattered and the scoreline fitted the game. Priestley’s surging run and great cross allowed Jamie Insall to net a fourth and after that we moved the ball around with style as a destroyed Barry chased shadows. Possibly the best away win of Andy’s reign. It was a privilege to be there to watch it. Also putting on a show at the weekend were Bala Town. Their 5-0 away win at Aberystwyth was very good and with some excellent team goals too. I am becoming convinced that this years Cymru Premiership will see a four way battle till the end. Whilst this might mean that one ,or two ( if someone else wins the Welsh Cup) ,very good sides miss out on Qualifying directly for the Europa League then it also means that this year sees a good chance of 12 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown
ending the TNS hegemony as the Champions . Nothing would be better for Welsh Football than seeing the title go somewhere other than Park Hall. I think that the title might well be won by the club who makes the best additions to their squad in the January transfer window. I hope its us. At the risk of upsetting a few ,(something I seem to have an unwanted talent for), here is how I see the League after fourteen matches. Ourselves, Barry, TNS and Bala look like getting away at the top. In my opinion its still TNS’s to lose, but all could win the title with a winning run through February and March. Newtown, Cardiff Met and Caernarfon will fight for advantage in the Europa League play off berths. Aberystwyth and Druids will steer home a safe mid table placing with Airbus,Penybont and Carmarthen in a dog fight to stay up. After last summers great results from TNS and Nomads; Wales has risen to 47th place in European Club Football. This confirms our four places in UEFA competitions but means that only our play off winners go into the Preliminary round of the 2020/21 Europa League . With us on 3.750 co-efficient points then should we qualify we can look forward to seeding and a winnable tie next summer. Crystal ball away and back to today. Our Under 18 team played a similar fixture to the first teams on Saturday. They met Cefn Mawr Rangers at the Quay 3G. Both sides had won all of their fixtures. Should have been a thrilling end to end affair in which either side could have won and a draw the probable outcome. That’s not how Nomads do football though. Just like the first team away at Barry our youngsters thumped the tough opposition. The 5-1 success was spectacular . Well done to all of the Staff and Players. The Cymru Premiership clubs come in to the Welsh Cup on Round three on December 7th.It was second round day last Saturday and the biggest shock was that there were no shocks. All the teams from a higher league beating the teams from a lower one. Except for one!! Abertillery Bluebirds play in the Welsh League Division Two and they defeated Llanidloes of the Welsh Alliance by 4-3 and that’s who we drew. Abertillery play at the local Sports Centre. Other Flintshire clubs involved had the following results; Flint won 3-1 at Greenfield, Mold thumped Llanrug 8-1 and Buckley won 3-0 away at Holyhead. Their rewards were ; Flint meet Bala Town at Home. Mold travel to TNS and Buckley travel to the winners of the postponed Pontardawe Town verses Croesyceiliog tie. Next up for us is the Nathaniel Motors League Cup Semi Final here next Saturday against Bala Town. Kick off is at 2-30. We hope to go at least one better than the past four seasons when we have lost 1-0 in the semi final. It is always nice to be in a final and with a Scottish Challenge Cup place available to the winners, its one that matters. Welcome to Tom Owen who is refereeing and both Connor Fowler and Phil Roszkowkski who are his assistants. James Walker is Fourth official with Cliff Evans as referee observer. We thank them all . Enjoy the game, Trevor Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown 13
REFLECTIONS
DAVID RAPSON LOOKS BACK ON PREVIOUS LEAGUE GAMES AGAINST NEWTOWN Since ‘The Robins’ are one of only two clubs to have retained membership of the league since it was inaugurated (Aberystwyth Town is the other) it is not surprising that we have met Newtown AFC on 57 previous occasions since 1992. While Connah’s Quay has the edge on the number of victories, we have scored only a single goal more than our opponents in total. In fact, matches between the two clubs have generally been even affairs although only a dozen have been drawn. Just four of those ended goalless, three of them at Latham Park. The Nomads took advantage of Newtown’s slow start to life in the infant League of Wales by gaining a ‘double’ over The Robins in 1992/93. Having won the away fixture 2-1, goals from Stewart Ritchie, Barry Thomas, Dave O’Gorman and Dave Davies sealed a 4-1 success at the Halfway Ground in March 1993. Having made his debut in a League Cup tie at Newtown (October 1992), O’Gorman went on to score 25 goals in his first season with the club. The following three seasons brought little success for us, however, as The Robins won on each of their visits to Deeside including a 4-1 victory in September 1994 when Mark Williams scored twice. The balance was redressed in December 1996 as Nomads ran out 4-0 winners in their home fixture, gaining the upper hand soon after half-time by netting three goals in 15 minutes. Honours were even in 1997/98 as both fixtures ended 1-1, the third consecutive drawn game between the sides at Latham Park following a couple of goalless affairs. Unusually, the 1998/99 encounter at the Deeside Stadium was played on a Thursday with Nomads winning 3-2 after an explosive first half. Mark Roberts gave Newtown an early lead which Carl Smyth cancelled out after 25 minutes. A minute before half time Stuart Rain put Connah’s Quay ahead for the first time adding his second and Nomads’ third straight from the restart to give the home side a 3-1 advantage. Mark Thomas reduced the deficit after the break, but Nomads hung on to claim all three points. Nomads remained undefeated in their home games against Newtown for the seven seasons between December 1996 and March 2003, although three of those fixtures were drawn. Following a 0-0 stalemate in February 2001

we entertained Newtown ten months later when defenders Gary McCosh and George Horan netted in between a brace of strikes from The Robins’ Justin Wickham.

The tables soon turned, however, for Newtown completed a league ‘double’ over us in both the 2003/04 and 2004/05 campaigns and added a further insult by winning the next game too! On 17th April 2004 Danny Barton registered the first hattrick in games between the two sides. Although Connah’s Quay took the lead on Deeside a minute before the break, Barton scored his goals in a twelve-minute spell around the hour mark and Rain’s late strike was mere consolation. A year later, having beaten us 2-1 at Latham Park, The Robins won 3-0 on Deeside, Mike Brown scoring twice and notched a fifth straight victory when that man Barton scored both goals in our first home match of the 2005/06 season.

Probably the most memorable meeting was the 3-3 draw on Deeside in November 2008. On a misty afternoon, which became foggy, Newtown went two goals up inside four minutes. Undeterred, Nomads hit back with a vengeance laying siege to the visitor’s goal and scoring three times courtesy of Peter Doran (2) and Adam Dickinson. Disappointingly for the home fans, an 89th minute penalty allowed Newtown to share the points.

Since returning to the Premier League in August 2012 following our two years in the Cymru Alliance, there has been a further 21 league fixtures with Newtown, six of them in the second phase of seasons when both clubs found themselves in the same half of the league table after the mid-season split. Overall in those matches Connah’s Quay has had slightly the better results although in 2015/16 Newtown won three of the four matches, as did the Nomads last time around.
