Connah's Quay Nomads vs Penybont

This week has certainly been one of the most challenging in my time as chair, and potentially one of the most difficult in our whole club history. Our protocol and processes to limit the risk of COVID-19 have been meticulous, but as we know the virus can strike anywhere at any time, and we unfortunately saw positive results from our latest rounds of tests, ruling out senior players for our Europa League clash on Thursday.

We have a great team, in my view one of the very best, and the events of the week just go to show why we’ve been so successful on and off the pitch over the past few years.

HONORABLE CLUB PATRONS Lord Barry Jones, Roger Speed

Good afternoon and welcome to another digital programme as we welcome Penybont to Deeside for our second outing in this very different JD Cymru Premier season so far.

Just keeping the Tbilisi game on was a monumental effort, which couldn’t have been achieved without incredible work from our staff. Club secretary Tom Houghton was instrumental in keeping match preparation on track, along with Jay Catton, Gemma Bamford, Dr Chris Jordan, Nik Mesney and Roma Gray to name just a few.

THE CHALLENGES CONTINUE WITH VISIT OF PENYBONT Sunday afternoon will see The Nomads play our third game in eight days as we welcome Penybont to Deeside Stadium. The side from Bridgend will also be playing their third game in as many days having lost out 3-0 to Barry last weekend before drawing 1-1 with Aberystwyth in the week. Last season Almost one year ago, Rhys Griffiths’ side came to Deeside and were on the end of a 3-1 defeat thanks to a Jamie Insall brace and Callum Morris penalty. Later in the season we visited the SDM Glass Stadium and left with a 0-0 draw after a frustrating afternoon in Bridgend back in November.

NOMADS DRAW WITH LAKESIDERS IN CLASH AT BALA

0-1

UEFA Europa League Thursday 17th September 2020 The Racecourse, Wrexham, Wales

Gabedava (90+7’)

LAST MINUTE TBILISI PENALTY SENDS NOMADS OUT OF EUROPE Connah’s Quay Nomads exited the Europa League at the second qualifying round on Thursday evening after a 97th minute penalty from Dinamo Tbilisi’s Giorgi Gabedava. • Nomads went into game with only 14-man squad • Jamie Insall’s overhead kick nearly sent Nomads ahead time • Connah’s Quay frustrated Tbilisi with solid display throughout • 97th minute penalty sealed victory for Tbilisi In accordance with all regulations and after permission from relevant authorities, the players were placed in self-isolation with the game set to continue with a depleted Nomads squad. This left Andy Morrison with a selection of only 14 with influential captain George Horan and Callum Morris out through injury. Priestley Farquharson wore the armband for the game, with Jamie Insall upfront and Aeron Edwards in the midfield, albeit with a cast on his left hand after an injury against Bala. Recently appointed Tbilisi manager Francisco Munoz Llompart meanwhile started a host of pacy attacking players including Nodar Kavtaradze, Giorgi Gabedava and Giorgi Zaria. The Nomads started the game well, pushing up into the right wing in the 2nd minute where Declan Poole won a free kick which quickly led to a corner ball swung in by Dool before being caught by goalkeeper Roin Kvaskhvadze. Andy Morrison’s limited squad made it clear they weren’t there to make up the numbers from the early stages, with Farquharson challenging defender Amossou, and Aeron Edwards making a run up to the byline in just seven minutes of the game starting. With confidence from their start, Nomads then held their own as Tbilisi took more of the possession. They looked to expose Nomads with runs down the wing from the likes of forward Nodar Kavtaradze, but he was met by the likes of Danny Davies and John Disney who stopped the visitors having any major chances early on. 6

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Penybont

In the 16th minute, another run from Kavtaradze down the left wing saw him collide with Nomads keeper Lewis Brass, who took a knock to the head but was able to continue after treatment. The first real chance of the game came on 23 minutes, when a quick passing move from Tbilsi saw Giorgi Kimadze clatter the Connah’s Quay crossbar with an effort from around 20 yards out. But just three minutes later Nomads got themselves in the opposite end, winning a corner kick which Sameron Dool took and eventual goalscorer Gabedava headed away. After half an hour of play, the game remained goalless and Nomads were looking worthy opponents on the evening despite being outnumbered squad-wise by the Georgian champions, who had seven names on the bench to Nomads’ three. In the 34th, they fended off another threat from Kavtaradze as he shot from the edge of the area to win a corner ball which was headed wide. As the game neared the interval, Nomads began to attack well and were regularly in Tbilisi’s final third as the fourth official awarded six additional minutes of injury time at the end of the half. It was during this that Nomads had one of their best chances of the afternoon, winning a throw in taken by Farquharson, who followed up by bursting in the box to send a ricocheted ball high up towards Insall. Insall rose to the ball with a well taken overhead kick, but was denied by the left foot of goalkeeper Kvaskhvadze to deny Nomads the lead at half time by the finest margin. Knowing they were matching their opponents well, Nomads came out for the second half looking for the vital opener. Just one minute into the restart, Farquharson found Declan Poole inside the Tbilisi area, and in the 49th Dool so nearly found Insall in front of the goal as they continue to threaten the visitor’s final third. After 50 minutes, Tbilisi were seeing possession inside the Nomads half, but failing to create major chances thanks to the stern defensive organisation of Andy Morrison’s side. With an hour played and Nomads still undeterred in their game plan, Tbilisi manager Francisco Llompart introduced Dos Santos in place of Filip Orsula as he looked to find a breakthrough. But this substitution did little to impact the game as Nomads started to mount a real battle at the Racecourse. In the 62nd, another Kavtaradze run was met by Danny Davies before Nomads won a free kick right on the edge of the Tbilisi area and near the byline on the right. Kris Owens sent his delivery to the goal and was on target, but kept out by the keeper who was forced to push away the powerful effort on 65 minutes. In the 68th, Tbilisi had a free kick of their own which led to a shot, but it was sent wide with only 20 minutes of normal time approaching. With the game hanging in the balance, Nomads showed great composure in their game plan and continued to push for the opener, winning a number of set pieces which Tbilisi tried to counter only to find themselves again without a way through the Connah’s Quay defence. As the game passed the 80 minute mark, Nomads had everything to play for with extra time looming. By now the encounter was end to end, with multiple set pieces for both sides being cleared amid packed penalty areas. Andy Morrison made his first change in the 88th, as Jamie Insall had taken a knock on one of his darting runs up-field and was replaced by Aron Williams. As the fourth official indicated a minimum of five minutes’ injury time, the already ferocious pace of the game increased further with each Nomads player putting in major efforts to keep Tbilisi at bay. Dos Santos tried to be the man of the moment for his side, but was blocked by Dool from around 10 yards on 90+2 before he fired an effort over Brass’ goal on 90+4. As the clock ticked onto 95 minutes, the Nomads looked to have done enough to earn an additional 30 minutes of extra time, but at the death of the tie, a Callum Roberts challenge on Dos Santos saw referee Alain Durieux of Luxembourg point to the penalty spot. With nothing on the clock, Gabedava stepped up and slotted past Lewis Brass to hand his side a dramatic victory, and cruelly send Nomads out of the competition after a phenomenal performance from Andy Morrison’s side. NOMADS DRAW WITH LAKESIDERS IN CLASH AT BALA

1-1

Dool (90+5’)

JD Cymru Premier Saturday 12th September 2020 Deeside Stadium, Connah’s Quay, Wales

Peate (21’)

SUPER SAMERON STRIKE SEES NOMADS DRAW WITH LAKESIDERS A 94th minute equaliser from Sameron Dool saw Connah’s Quay Nomads draw 1-1 with Bala Town in their first game of the JD Cymru Premier on Saturday evening at Deeside. • Nomads start JD Cymru Premier title defence in live Sgorio game at Deeside • Peate sends header over Brass to take lead for Bala on 21 minutes • Nomads see close chances kept out in second half • Dool’s dramatic 94th minute equaliser sees both sides take a point The match marked the start of the Nomads’ title defence as their inaugural game of the JD Cymru Premier season, which started as their previous one had ended; against close rivals Bala Town. Since then, both sides had gone onto notable successes, with Nomads clinching the league championship after the curtailing of the 19/20 campaign and going onto make their Champions League debut in Cardiff, against Bosnian champions FK Sarajevo. Bala Town meanwhile came into the game flying high off the back of their first ever win on the continent from a 1-0 victory over Valletta of Malta. Andy Morrison gave a start to the league’s newly crowned Young Player of the Season, Priestley Farquharson, along with his new signings Danny Davies and Aeron Edwards. Michael Wilde meanwhile made his 300th appearance in the top flight and his 88th start for Nomads since joining the club in 2015. Bala manager Colin Caton meanwhile gave starts to league stalwart Chris Venables as well as signings Will Evans and Nathan Peate from Cardiff Met and Cefn Druids respectively. 8

Connah's Quay Nomads vs Penybont

Played in line with the FAW’s safe return to play protocol, the game was played behind closed doors, with only limited personnel inside the stadium during the season opener. After both sides kneeled in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, the game began and Sameron Dool won a corner kick early on, with former Nomad turned Bala defender Sean Smith booked for an early challenge in the Nomads half. This bright but controlled start from Nomads and Bala meant the game went without major chances in the opening stage, with Farquharson targeting the Lakesiders’ end with his long throw ins into their final third. The deadlock was however broken on 21 minutes, when Peate sent a looping header over Lewis Brass to send the visitors 0-1 up. Nomads looked to cancel this goal out quickly with runs from Danny Davies down the wing, one of which saw him reach the Bala area in the 24th only for his shot to go wide. Craig Curran was also looking to cause problems for the Bala defence upfront, but couldn’t quite find that clinical finish Nomads needed to get back on level terms before the interval. Andy Morrison added more firepower to his side with a half time substitution that saw Nomads’ top goalscorer last season, Jamie Insall, replace Callum Morris. Nomads’ eagerness for an equaliser was clear early on in the second half, with Dool taking two corner kicks within six minutes of the restart. This led to a bicycle kick from Aeron Edwards at close range which was on target, but blocked in a busy Bala box on 53 minutes. On the hour mark, Farquharson had one of Connah’s Quay’s best chances, heading just over from a well placed cross via Dool. But Bala’s reply to this was almost instant, with Chris Venables breaking clear on goal just seven yards out with Lewis Brass making a stop to deny him at close range. In the 68th Bala were still on the front foot and looking to take the game away from Nomads, but Will Evans’ strike from around 20 yards out sailed out for a goal kick. With 20 to play Nomads were well in the game, but found themselves frustrated in the final third as Bala dug their heels in to hold out the scoreline at Deeside. Andy Morrison then made his second substitution, bringing on Kris Owens in place of Danny Harrison to further drive Nomads into the Bala area. Owens proved effective in swinging crosses and set pieces in, with pressure from Nomads seeing the ball scramble inside the Bala end regularly, but with ten minutes to play Nomads still found themselves trailing. They continued to push for a late opener, nearly levelling in the 90th when a corner kick for Nomads was headed at close range by Aeron Edwards, who rose highest in a packed box, only to see Bala keeper Alex Ramsay stop the ball on the line. In the 92nd, Nomads won another corner which was taken by Owens but cleared by Bala, who looked all but set to take three points home from Deeside. But deep into stoppage time on 94 minutes, Sameron Dool received the ball from around 30 yards out before striding forward and curling a sensational 25 yard strike into the top right corner past a helpless Ramsay. A VIEW FROM THE STAND By Will Catterall

Hello and welcome back to our second digital programme for today’s game at Deeside, which tops of a huge week for the club, on and off the pitch. Going back a little bit, we opened our JD Cymru Premier campaign here last Saturday against Bala Town, and what a game it turned out, with a 94th minute equaliser from Sameron Dool – which could well turn out to be a goal of the season contender – seeing us snatch a late point after Bala’s opener in the first half. Then, we turned attentions to Europe, which feels strange in itself, as in normal times the only way we would play European and domestic football within just five days would be reaching the final play off qualifier or even group stages of either the Europa League or Champions League. But nevertheless, we went to the Racecourse for a clash with Dinamo Tbilisi, in a game that saw the champions of Wales face the champions of Georgia as we both went into the second qualifying round of the Europa League after losing out in the Champions League. What happened before the game was something no one could’ve stopped, despite all protocols being followed by the letter. Positive COVID tests, coupled with other players being injured, took some of our senior players out of the squad, leaving us with just a 14-man squad for the European clash. Not that you would’ve noticed that on the pitch, mind. In the face of this unprecedented challenge, our team put on a fantastic performance which matched the might of Tbilisi, and the 0-0 score line proved that up until the 97th minute. But just as we looked to have sealed extra time, a penalty kick gave the visitors the victory in the cruellest fashion. It might’ve sent us out of Europe, but the feeling around the club was pride in the lads for representing Wales and the Cymru Leagues fantastically well and I fancied us to nick it at some stage had extra time gone on. We move on and head straight back into domestic action, welcoming Penybont to Deeside. Rhys Griffiths has a very well drilled side, which we know all too well having been held to a 0-0 draw at their place last season. It will no doubt be another tough battle today and we’re looking forward to this one which is of course again behind closed doors – there’s no update as of yet on when fans can come back, but we’ll be getting the news out to you as soon as any more information becomes available. Score Prediction: Nomads 2-0 Penybont Nomads Player of the Week: Danny Davies Danny joined us from Prestatyn in the summer, and played a key role in frustrating the Tbilisi defence on Thursday for well over 90 minutes. As an attacking wing back he’s just as comfortable looking for goals as he is defending, and we hope to see much more of him as the season continues.
