NOMADS LOOKING TO CONTINUE UNBEATEN RUN AS PENYBONT HEAD NORTH Connah’s Quay Nomads will be aiming to continue our unbeaten start to the season as we host Penybont in today’s JD Cymru Premier clash. We were last in league action here at Deeside against Aberystwyth were a 4-1 victory saw that unbeaten run continued, and it was again continued this past week against both Newtown and Guilsfield respectively. The game marks the first time that Penybont have visited Deeside Stadium and the newly promoted side have had a tough start to life in the JD Cymru Premier, having won only one fixture thus far, in their previous visit to Deeside when they beat Airbus 3-1 a last weekend. Elsewhere in the league, they have lost to Barry, Cardiff Met, TNS, Bala and Caernarfon and were knocked out of the Nathaniel MG Cup on Tuesday night by Newtown. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “Sunday’s game brings a first ever game for myself against Penybont. Having won the league below so convincingly last season and picking up their first victory last weekend, their tails will be up. In Rhys Griffiths, they have a very bright young manager who knows the league well and who i know is very ambitious. We again will have to be right at the top of our game to get the desired result. I still feel there is so much more to come from us - we have shown in spells this season that we are playing well, but maintaining the hightest standard week-in, week-out and over 90 minutes is something we have to improve on. With a big change in personnel this season we know that this will take time and hard work.” Connah's Quay Nomads vs Penybont 5

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

The Nomads won 5-3 on pens

SHOOTOUT SUCCESS FOR NOMADS Connah’s Quay Nomads beat Guilsfield FC 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the Nathaniel MG Cup third round on Wednesday evening. After a Jamie Insall goal in the 43rd minute sent Nomads ahead, but a 48th minute Callum Bromley goal was enough to send the game to penalties. - Jamie Insall nets for Nomads - Sameron Dool makes Nomads debut - Callum Bromley’s equaliser took the game to penalties - Bakare takes spot kick to win shootout 5-3 The tie was set up by Nomads’ early season second round Nathaniel MG Cup game against Rhyl, in which goals from Nathan Woolfe and Ryan Wignall sent them through to face JD Cymru North side Guilsfield at Clos Mytton. Nathan Woolfe made the starting line along with debutant Sameron Dool, whilst Conor Harwood formed part of Nomads’ attacking line up with Insall. The first major chance of the game came in the 4th minute, when an aerial ball into the Guilsfield area saw Callum Morris head just over the crossbar. Connah’s Quay then began to target the host’s area with the long throw ins of Priestley Farquharson, but these were headed away by the Mid Wales side’s stern defence. Nomads again went close in the 14th, when a Woolfe corner went to Jamie Insall near the left post, but he was unable to connect with the ball, seeing a follow up strike from Farquharson go wide. It was then the turn of Harwood to go at goal, but his well taken 17th minute strike was saved by keeper Mike Jones. As the half went on, Nomads were continuing to look to put pressure on

the opposition’s goalmouth at every opportunity, but were coming against a spirited performance from Guilsfield. As half time neared a goal before the interval looked likely, but Nomads broke the deadlock via Jamie Insall in the 43rd minute. He burst into the area and connected with the ball on the edge of the box to slot past keeper Jones. Boosted by their goal, the Nomads came out for the second half aiming to add to their lead and consolidate their winning position. But they were set back early on, as Callum Bromley rose up in the Nomads’ area on 48 minutes to head a cross past Lewis Brass. Sameron Dool was impressing in his first Nomads appearance with some skilful and pacy runs down the midfield, which he utilised to set up the likes of Woolfe and Insall as they looked to reply to the equaliser. After 56 minutes, Andy Morrison made his first change of the evening, bringing on Michael Bakare in place of Declan Poole. Two minutes later Guilsfield almost took the lead when a corner ball went close to the Nomads’ goal, but was cleared off the line in a packed Connah’s Quay area. After the hour mark, Michael Wilde replaced Conor Harwood as the cup tie began to play out with an end-to-end feel as both sides sought to take the lead. Nomads won a number of set pieces in the Guilsfield half, but were again frustrated by the hosts, seen in the 71st minute when Woolfe broke clear in front of goal only to be blocked by keeper Jones from six yards. With 15 minutes to go, Nomads’ final change saw John Disney take the field in place of Danny Harrison. Disney was soon involved with Nomads’ efforts to find a late winner inside the final 10 minutes, which saw them increase their share of possession and set pieces in the Guilsfield half. In the 83rd minute, Nathan Woolfe sent a corner swinging in close to goal, and then fired just over from 15 yards in the 85th. Despite last ditch efforts from both teams to find a winner in normal time, full time saw the tie decided by penalties with no extra time played as per competition rules. The shoot-out saw some consistently strong penalties from Jamie Insall, Callum Morris, John Disney, and George Horan, but Guilsfield remained in the shootout, scoring two and missing one. The penalty to send Nomads through fell to Michael Bakare, who stayed cool on the spot to fire low into the goal to book Nomads’ place in the quarter final for the fifth consecutive season.

JD Cymru Premier Tuesday, 10th September 2019 Deeside Stadium, Connah’s Quay

1-1 NEWTOWN

CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS

UNBEATEN RUN CONTINUES WITH DRAW AT NEWTOWN Connah’s Quay Nomads maintained their undefeated record in the JD Cymru Premier with a 1-1 draw with Newtown AFC on Friday evening at Latham Park. A Nick Rushton goal sent Newtown ahead on the stroke of half time, but a 62nd minute equaliser from Michael Bakare ensured the spoils were shared. - Ex-Nomad Rushton gave Newtown the lead - Michael Bakare’s chip secures Nomads equaliser - Both teams settle for a point in live Sgorio streamed game Following a period of three games within just six days, the Nomads went into the match with a full week’s worth of preparation to face a Newtown side that are notoriously tough to beat at home, and had beaten high flying Bala Town 1-0 in their last outing. Nomads named a line up with Jamie Insall, Michael Bakare, and Michael Wilde leading their attacking line, whilst Danny Harrison joined the defence as a replacement for the suspended captain George Horan. The opening minutes saw both teams looked to establish their game plan and Newtown fire some early warning shots. After Sheridan sent a half volley over the crossbar from the right wing on four minutes, Lewis Brass pushed out a 30 yard free kick effort from Craig Williams. With 10 minutes played the game’s flow was interrupted whilst Newtown’s Joe Kenton was treated for an injury, but it resumed with Nomads continuing to soak up pressure from the hosts with great tackles from the likes of John Disney and Callum Roberts. Connah’s Quay did look to attack, but found themselves halted by the officials

on two occasions, with Bakare being found offside and then having a handball given against him as he darted down the left wing in the 23rd. Newtown’s Nick Rushton looked to score against his old side, going close on 26 minutes when his 25 yard effort glanced wide of Lewis Brass’ left post. But as the half hour mark approached, both keepers had still seldom been tested with Newtown and Nomads’ well set up shapes ensuring a clean sheet each so far in the game. Jay Owen nearly sent the Nomads ahead on 43 minutes, as he hit a volley in a crowded Newtown area from just seven yards, but was blocked by Robins captain Craig Williams. Just as the game looked to inevitable end goalless at the break, Nick Rushton sent the hosts ahead on 45 minutes, breaking into the Nomads are to fire an effort high into the roof of the net. This sucker punch goal left Nomads disappointed at having given a goal away after a half of few major chances for Newtown or themselves. During the break, a change saw Nathan Woolfe replace Jamie Insall, and Nomads started the second half on the front foot as they chased a much needed equaliser. Woolfe got involved early on, cutting into the area to shoot just wide, with Bakare getting to the Newtown byline in the 47th minute only to have his cross headed away. Nomads kept the pressure on, as on 49 minutes a Bakare cross was then headed just wide by the rising Callum Roberts on the edge of the Newtown box. The hosts retaliated to Nomads’ attacks by getting back into the Connah’s Quay half and winning a corner in the 59th minute. It was sent in and met with shouts for a penalty due to a handball, but the referee waved the appeal away. As the hour mark passed Nomads were still searching for a goal, but it soon came in style via Michael Bakare. He got on the end of an aerial ball from Priestley Farquharson, and expertly chipped it over keeper David Jones, who had came off his line, to score into the open goal. Boosted by the equaliser, Nomads heavily concentrated their play in the Newtown final third, seeing Bakare go close again in the 69th when he sent a well weighted Callum Morris cross above the crossbar with a volley from 10 yards. As the game entered its latter stages, the three points were well and truly up for grabs with both sides eager to find the winner. Newtown utilised set pieces in the Nomads’ half, winning a corner kick on 78 minutes which was calmly collected by Lewis Brass. A minute later, they won a free kick from near the edge of the Nomads area, but despite the dangerous position, it hit the Nomads wall before being cleared to safety. In the 83rd minute, Nathan Woolfe threatened with a well placed cross into the home area, but it was punched away by keeper Jones with Wilde trying to get a head on it. In the 85th, Jay Owen was forced off with an injury and replaced by Kris Owens who joined the Nomads’ efforts for a late and dramatic equaliser. Connah’s Quay built up play nicely inside the final five minutes of normal time, winning two consecutive corners only to be halted by a foul by Wilde on keeper Jones, for which he saw a yellow card. With the 90 minutes up, five additional minutes of time were awarded, giving both sides the chance to push a late winner once again. Bakare came the closest to doing that in the 92nd minute, nearly breaking into the Newtown area to go one on one against the keeper, who swept off his line to recover the ball before the Nomads’ number seven could strike it. Full time saw the spoils shared between the two side, with the result enough to keep Nomads’ unbeaten record intact and keep them third in the JD Cymru Premier. Connah's Quay Nomads vs Penybont 9

A VIEW FROM THE STAND BY WILL CATTERALL

It’s always good to be back at Deeside after a tough week and a half going to and from Mid Wales. We last played at home against Aberystwyth, leaving here undefeated, and we come into today’s game with that record still intact. Following on from that match, we went to Newtown on a Friday evening to face them in a live Facebook game. Latham Park is a notoriously difficult place to go to, and the encounter was no exception as we went 1-0 down before a great goal from Michael Bakare gave us a 1-1 draw to stay unbeaten in the JD Cymru Premier. Then, on Wednesday, we went down to another difficult Mid Wales ground in Clos Mytton, the home of Guilsfield, for the Nathaniel MG Cup third round. A Jamie Insall goal sent us ahead, but an equaliser saw the game go to penalties which we won, scoring all of our five spot kicks. The football authorities in Wales are often criticised, so it’s only fair we give them credit when it’s due. The Nathaniel MG Cup rules were changed to state that if games finish at a draw after 90 minutes, they’ll go straight to penalties. This was the right decision, as no one, particularly spectators, wants to commit to a potential extra 30 minutes at a far flung ground on a midweek night game. Going straight to penalties helps the competition’s appeal and ultimately decides the game quicker – fortunately, it went in our favour this week, and we’ll be working hard to make sure it doesn’t come to that in the quarter final. But that will be easier said than done, as we’ve been drawn at home to historic rivals Flint Town in the last eight. This will be a great occasion which will hopefully attract a big crowd from both ends of the A548 – the derby will be played on either Tuesday 29 October or Wednesday 30 October – stay tuned for the confirmation announcement on our social channels. Today will be another big test for us if we are to extend our undefeated record to eight games – Penybont beat Airbus last week and will no doubt be looking to build on that win to get out of the relegation zone. Welcome to all players, officials and fans, and a safe journey home after this afternoon’s game. Nomads Player of the Week: Sameron Dool After building up some game time with the U19s, Sameron made his debut against Guilsfield this week and impressed with some strong passing in the midfield and a determination to get us into the final third as we pushed for a late winner. We hope to see much more of Sam throughout the season! Score Prediction: Nomads 2-0 Penybont

GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN

Good Afternoon , Welcome to Pen-y-bont FC who are making their first visit to the Deeside Stadium after winning the last Welsh League Championship before the new Cymru Division One South replaced it. The club was formed in 2013 following the merger of Bridgend Town F.C. and Bryntirion Athletic F.C. and play at the Kymco Stadium in Bridgend ,which was the former home of Bryntirion . They are led by one of our leagues legendary top scoring forwards ,Rhys Griffiths, who was often a thorn in our side when combining his role as a part-time footballer with being a firefighter in the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. He signed a professional contract with Plymouth Argyle but prior to making his debut in the Football League, Griffiths played for Cwmbrân Town, Haverfordwest County, Carmarthen Town, Port Talbot Town and Llanelli scoring over 200 goals at our level. Pen-y-bont have not amassed too many points yet, but they have impressed with their neat and attractive forward play and last Saturdays comfortable win against our next door neighbours Airbus UK shows their potential . We welcome their officials, Rhys ,his staff , players and the supporters who have made the long haul up from the South. Its never easy at Newtown and to win their you need to be at your best, unfortunately we were far from that and so to come away with a point was probably “one against the head”. Why a side has an off day can be a result of many things, but when a bad day doesn’t end in defeat its probably a sign of a good team. However, after four draws in the first seven games our points tally is not what we hoped for. Yes ,we are still unbeaten ...but in the Cymru Premier its wins that count. To get those wins we need to take more of the many chances we create. Perhaps today will see the start of putting the ball in to the net. Whilst no one has conceded less than the four put past us so far, only three of the twelve teams have scored less than our nine, with four of those coming in the one game against Aberystwyth. I have two personal opinions to make. Firstly ;We are competing in the top Domestic League in Wales, its a league that provides a club into the Champions League, its club sides are superbly organised and professionally run. Its also the only senior League in Britain without a functioning website. Next week we will be into October and yet the official Website is still a title page stating that a web presence is “coming soon”. The FAW has done well to restructure the pyramid and streamline the top two divisions but their effort is undermined by this. The fault is possibly the new Comet recording system which many have found to be over complicated , inflexible and inefficient. I hope not too many groundhoppers travelled to Guilsfield on Monday for our Nathaniel Motors Cup Game (which was played on 14 Connah's Quay Nomads vs Penybont

Wednesday as scheduled) after National media were confused and listed it wrongly. This also happened with the TNS match at Cardiff Met. In this day and age people (and especially the media) need a simple access point showing fixtures, tables and results. When even local Sunday and youth football can manage this, to many it is a cause of embarrassment that a Nations top competition can’t. Hopefully this will be put right very soon. My second issue of concern at the moment is the shortage of referees. Fixtures down the pyramid are being cancelled in ever increasing numbers. Part of this is the fault of people (me included) who make negative comments about individual decisions and errors. Its human nature but it has led to a bit of a them and us attitude. We have allowed referees to be seen alongside Lawyers ,Bankers and Traffic Wardens as a sort of Public Enemy. Well these chickens are now coming home to roost. Something needs to be done and instead of moaning about it I have a suggestion to make. Its one I have made before, but I believe its time has come. Every year we see over 100 players at each Welsh Club Academy. There are nearly thirty Academies of Football . That’s 3,000 kids who are all elite level and love the game. Of these perhaps ten percent go on to play at senior level. Why are we just letting them walk away after so much time in developing them? What I am suggesting is diverting those who wish to stay in football into a mentored refereeing section at each Academy between fourteen and 16 years old. A former top level referee should be employed as director on the same basis as Senior Academy coaches at each Academy, and the lads properly equipped and cherished. They would gain experience by refereeing Academy Matches under mentorship and train with the players on a weekly basis. We cant keep on hoping to attract referees from the general public by doing after work theoretical study in a room at a Pub or club. Its 2019 and its time to solve this issue . Next weekend (on Saturday) the first team travel to Carmarthen Town. The following week we make the trip to meet Partick Thistle in Glasgow. Another big day. The game is at 5-15 on Saturday October the 12th. We hope to see loads of you there, its an easier trip than Carmarthen, and we hope to recreate the Spirit of last years day out in Inverness. If you can’t go the match will be shown on S4C. Next up here at the Deeside Stadium will be Caernarfon Town on Tuesday 15th October for a 7-45 Kick Off. As I write, I don’t know who today’s match officials are, but they are welcome and we are grateful that they did put in the time and effort to enable us all to have a game to enjoy.
