TV TABLE TOPPER AS SAINTS VISIT Friday night’s live televised game sees Connah’s Quay Nomads host The New Saints with a position at the top of the JD Cymru Premier at stake for the victor. Both sides come into the game on the back of fine recent form with The Nomads picking up three wins and a draw in the league in October while TNS three successive victories following their defeat at Caernarfon early in the month. The last time the two sides met at Deeside saw TNS pick up a vital 2-0 victory en route to a domestic double last season - goals from Aeron Edwards and Ryan Brobbel were enough for the Saints to pick up the victory on a wet day at Deeside. Ahead of the clash, Andy Morrison said “We will have to leave the team selection until the last minute having picked up two injuries in mid-week against Flint, we currently have seven unavailable or struggling for Friday night. This can happen in a season and we have to find a way to deal with it. Tuesday was pleasing as we didn’t miss the five key players who were injured for the game - the young lads who stepped in did really well and haved shown they are ready when opportunities come their way. We go into the game unbeaten - there has been a steady improvement all season and although still not reaching the heights I believe we can, there’s an honest desire to improve. We need to continue to train at a high intensity and believe that when we get it right defensivley and offensively, we will be a very difficult team to beat.”

Nathaniel MG Cup Tuesday, 29th October 2019 Deeside Stadium, Connah’s Quay, Wales
Connah’s Quay Nomads booked their place in the Nathaniel MG Cup Semi Finals following a 4-1 victory over Flint Town United on Tuesday Night.
4-1 CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS
DERBY DAY DELIGHT FOR NOMADS
The game marked the first competitive encounter between the two sides since 2011 when The Nomads earned a 2-1 victory in Flint. FLINT TOWN UNITED
Harwood gives Nomads early lead Woolfe gets second before Flint pull one back Late own goal and Bakare strikes sees game end 4-1 The Nomads started with a much changed team missing regulars like George Horan, Mike Wilde and Jamie Insall, which gave opportunities for starts for Sameron Dool, Kris Owens and Conor Harwood. It didn’t take long for The Nomads to establish themselves in the game - in the seventh minute, Nathan Woolfe hit a rasping left-footed effort from the edge of the box only to see ex-Nomad John Danby tip the effort over the bar. The visitors did however have an early chance themselves as they forced corner in the ninth minute - Brandon Burrows whipped in a corner and Richie Foulkes rose highest at the near post but saw his header fly just over Lewis Brass’ crossbar. Four minutes later and The Nomads early pressure told as some neat play down the left wing between Sameron Dool and Kris Owens saw Owens break into space before flashing a ball across the face of the Flint goal which Conor Harwood finished neatly to send The Nomads deservedly 1-0 up. The goal gave The Nomads added confidence and saw an immediate search for a second as Nathan Woolfe again tested John Danby, this time from inside the penalty area but Danby managed to keep the scores to 1-0. The Nomads went on to dominate the majority of the first half with plenty of possession in the final third, however clear cut chances weren’t quite falling. A big chance came in the 25th minute when Sameron Dool again linked

up neatly down the left wing before bursting into the box - when it looked as though he could have shot himself, Dool chose to square the ball to Conor Harwood but the ball was just out of his reach mere yards from the goalline - there were shouts for a penalty as some thought that Harwood was hauled to the ground in the process, but nothing was given by referee John Jones. It was again the combination of Woolfe and Danby as Woolfe once more got away from his man before cutting in to test Danby in the 31st minute and just two minutes later the ex-Nomads was called into action yet again to prevent two successive crosses from Woolfe. Half time arrived with The Nomads 1-0 up thanks to Harwood’s 11th minute opener but the difference in score could have been more significant had Danby not made so many vital saves. The second half resumed with much of the same pattern of play Nomads on the attack in search of a second and it came just nine minutes into the second half. Nathan Woolfe’s persistence paid dividends as he finally got himself on the scoresheet in somewhat unusual circumstances. Conor Harwood hit a shot from the edge of the box and as Woolfe was running in for any potential rebounds, he actually intercepted the shot and turned it into an assist as he quickly readjusted his feet to slot the ball past Danby from close range. In the 66th minute, Dool was again on the attack and found himself free inside the box before lifting the ball over John Danby only to find that he had been flagged offside, thus ruling the goal out. Just a minute later however, Flint were given a lifeline in the game as they got into a pocket of space down the right wing, flashing a ball across the face of The Nomads’ goal and Andy Brown tapped in at the back post despite the efforts of Disney to stop the goal. The goal changed the pattern of play somewhat as Flint looked to get back into the game for the next 10 minutes with more possession than they had seen all game. Andy Morrison brough Jamie Insall into the fray in the 72nd minute as he replaced Nathan Woolfe and Michael Bakare came on for Kris Owens. Insall was denied an almost immediate goal as he got on the end of a neat through ball only to see his effort rebound off the post and then John Danby again denied The Nomads as Sameron Dool’s rebound was saved. Flint were struggling to deal with the introduction of the fresh legs that had been introduced but it was one of the starting eleven who forced the next goal as Declan Poole raced into the Flint box down the right before sending a low cross into the box, only ot see Kyle Smyth turn the ball into his own net in the 90th minute. The Nomads final substitution saw 17 year old Sam Williams introduced to the game, an academy player who has been with the club since he was 10, who featured on the bench alongside other academy players Jimmy Worthington, Jack Robinson and Harry Owen. The Nomads were denied a fourth minutes later as a couple of goalline clearances denied Jamie Insall and Michael Bakare, but Bakare wouldn’t be denied a goal as in the 93rd minute a bit of pinball in the box saw the ball drop to Bakare who slammed home an emphatic finish to give The Nomads the 4-1 lead that their performance had deserved. John Jones brought the game to an end seconds after Bakare’s strike and The Nomads booked our place in the Semi Finals along with Aberystwyth Town, Bala Town and STM Sports who all won on the night as well.

Connah's Quay Nomads vs The New Saints
GREEN’S PIECE BY TREVOR GREEN
Welcome to what I believe to be a season defining match. In the Welsh System no one has come close to the achievements of The New Saints. We were good last year, and were holding on to their coat tails going into the second phase of ten games, and had realistic hopes of being the club that could end their run of eight successive titles. Indeed they have won twelve of the last fifteen and in the three they did not win they were runners up twice and third once. Our hopes were soon cast away by their remarkable run of nine wins and a draw against the other five in the top six play off’s. This season they have been less assertive with defeats at home to Barry and away at Caernarfon and Bala. They were rescued a from defeat at Cardiff Met with a last kick of the match equaliser too. However they have won more games than us and are only one point back. Should we intend to end their run of championships then this is a game that must be won. The New Saints are welcome. They bring a numerous and an enhanced vocal support (although I, personally, find the loud hailers annoying and about as welcome as vuvuzelas were in the South Africa World Cup). Mike Harris is always a pleasure to entertain and Scott, Steve the staff and the players are welcomed as are the officials of the club. The win in Tuesday night’s Deeside derby was very welcome; a crowd of 400 turned out on a bitterly cold night, indicating that the support would be there if we make the move to a rebuilt Cae y Castell Stadium in the near future. Flint were big, strong and aggressive. With ex-nomads John Danby, Dom McHugh, Mark Cadwallader and Aden Shannon in their colours it was almost more of a reunion than a football match. We were quite good and some of our passing football was a joy, but at 2-1 they had moments when the result did appear to be in danger. However two late goals gave a true reflection of the evenings work. We go into the semi final for the fifth season in succession hoping to go better than the previous four 1-0 defeats. The highlight for me was seeing a Nomads side featuring the emerging young talent of Kris Owens, Sameron Dool, Declan Poole and Connor Harwood playing with such maturity and composure. Also seeing Sam Eilliams come on as a sub for a debut. The first goal, a sweeping move involving Kris and Sameron ended by a very good Conor finish was indicative of what we hope is to come. Sir Alex Ferguson was credited for knowing when to introduce young talent and knowing how and when to rebuild his side. Andy Morrison has brought in those young men; and also has Lewis Brass, Priestley Farquarson and Callum Roberts here as well. That’s seven of the regular first team squad under 23 and on Tuesday’s showing ready to compete at the highest level of Welsh Domestic Football.

Also doing well was a graduate of Gerald Davies’ refereeing mentorship scheme. John Jones took the whistle and did well. He might have given us a penalty for a foul on Conor mid first half, but he officiated with clarity and presence. It’s a tough job refereeing and they deserve all the help they can get. I remember a teenage John travelling with his parents to officiate at Academy matches across the region on Sunday mornings always with a smile on his face, passionately committed to his refereeing. Great to see him making the grade. There must be many more lads (at Academies and not), who could be supported into this role, I hope so because the game needs them. The first team have a difficult month ahead, we go to current league leaders and fellow undefeated club Barry Town United next Saturday. Then we are back here on Friday 15th to meet Newtown before the League cup semi final on the weekend of the 23rd. The month’s activity ends on Saturday 30th which sees another long haul South when we go to Penybont for the first time. The Under 18’s had another great result on Saturday in the WNL Reserve and Colts League beating Bala Town 3-1 away Ricardo Chinea-Pegler netting twice with Max Moore getting the other. The week before they smashed Overton Recreation 6-2 with goals from Eric Brown (2), Tom Dewis, Ben O’Neill, Josh Allen, and Ricardo Chinea-Pegler. The Bala win took them to the top of the table having won all eight games scoring 41 and conceding 11 times. We moved up to this level to get tougher fixtures for the lads We might have to elevate further to get the competition they need for their development , but all credit for doing a great job in beating what’s put in front of them. Tomorrow they travel to meet Coedpoeth United . I am hoping to go along to see them, join me there. Our academy cup sides (U-12 , U-14 and U-16) all secured their progression to the FAW Academy Cup Super Six with three wins at home to Caernarfon Town. This gave all three a 100% record. The 12’s beat a strong Caernarfon side 4-1. The lads moved the ball superbly and scored some excellent goals. The 14s completed their academy cup preliminary group with a maximum 5 wins out of 5 following a 2-1 victory over Caernarfon who also had a 100% record coming into this fixture. It was an excellent game of football . The 16’s dominated from start to finish , Caernarfon worked extremely hard right through however nomads where stronger in all departments particularly second half where they moved the ball much quicker , winning comfortably by 7-0. The Under19’s were held to a 1-1 draw by The New Saints who scored a stoppage time equaliser. Mark Petch is refereeing tonight. He is assisted by Dan Becektt and Johnathon Bryant with Kevin Parry as 4th official. Remember without them we would not have a game and we thank them.. Enjoy the Game .
