A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR Good evening and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of The New Saints who have made the journey to the Deeside Stadium. This is an eagerly awaited clash between the top two in the table and we are hoping for a bumper crowd for what promises to be an exciting match. Following last weekend’s sad news regarding Caroline Flack, Connah’s Quay Nomads are proud to support MIND, the mental health charity. Our very own Emma-Clare Hewitt will be attempting to climb Mont Blanc in September. A gift aid link is included on our website and buckets will be available at all home games. Thank you for your support, enjoy the evening. Vicky

TOP TWO MEET AT DEESIDE Tonight sees the top two teams in the JD Cymru Premier meet as Connah’s Quay Nomads host The New Saints in a live Sgorio game. The Nomads head into the game currently sitting atop the league and a win on Friday night would open the gap to four points over TNS, who have drawn at Bala and lost at Newtown so far in Phase Two of the league campaign. Our start to Phase Two has been fantastic with a 1-0 victory at Barry and a 4-0 victory here last Friday over Caernarfon Town. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said “I think for me to say that it’s just another game would be pointing out the obvious cliches - it isn’t - it’s a top of the table clash but we have to go about it in the same way that we have done the last couple of months, probably the last three months at home where we’ve won nine and drawn one, scored 27 and I think conceded seven so we’re in a phenomenal run of form at home and we’re playing really well so I don’t need to sell anything to the players about having belief, because it’s there - the facts and the stats are there on how well they’ve played so we should be going into it buoyant. Since Park Hall, we’ve gon 8-0, 3-0, 1-0, 4-0 so we’re playing incredibly well and we’re a team right in form and if the boys produce the quality and he standards they have done over the last couple of months we’ll be fine come Friday night.”

NOMADS GO TOP WITH WIN OVER COFIS Connah’s Quay Nomads went top of the JD Cymru Premier on Friday evening with a 4-0 win over Caernarfon Town at Deeside.
CAERNARFON TOWN
A George Horan double gave them the advantage at the break, before strikes from Craig Curran and Michael Bakare sealed a vital win for Andy Morrison’s side. • Nomads go top after TNS draw at Bala • Horan scored inside two minutes before securing brace in the 23rd • Craig Curran opens Nomads account on his Deeside debut • Aron Williams returns to action for Nomads The evening couldn’t have started better for Nomads, as within the first two minutes, George Horan took the lead. After a cross from the right wing from Danny Holmes reached the area, Horan rose up near the back post to head in and give Nomads an early 1-0 lead. They used the quickfire goal to quickly gain control of the encounter, limiting Caernarfon’s possession across the field as they went on to target more goals at the Cofi’s end. Callum Roberts and Declan Poole were proving effective on the wing, sending good crosses in where the likes of Wilde were looking to get headers on goal. Wilde did just that in the 15th minute after a half volley from Roberts deflected and went up into the air, heading up and over the Caernarfon goal from around six yards. A blistering run down the wing from Poole two minutes later then won a throw in near the Caernarfon end, which saw Nomads keep the ball in the

Cofi’s end. And that pressure paid dividends, as they went 2-0 up as George Horan secured his brace after just 23 minutes. He got the ball in the area, chested it down and hit a half volley past keeper Alex Ramsay to extend his side’s lead. With half an hour played, the Nomads were in control thanks to Horan’s brace and a composed performance across the pitch. They were still looking for a goal before the break, with Craig Curran heading over on 37 minutes as he looked to open his Nomads account in his first game at Deeside since signing in January. Before half time came, Caernarfon did have a chance to reduce the deficit, but Lewis Brass was there to push a 20 yard effort around his left post to force a corner which was subsequently cleared. The second half opened in a more even fashion to the first, with Caernarfon growing into the game to win a corner in the 48th, although Lewis Brass remained relatively unchallenged in his goal. As the hour mark approached Andy Morrison rung his first change, bringing Michael Bakare on in place of Declan Poole as Nomads looked to add further goals to their game. Bakare got involved immediately, holding up the ball in the Caernarfon end and using his pace to get past defenders and send dangerous looking crosses into the area. In the 68th, John Disney was brought on to replace Jamie Insall to help keep what would become Nomads’ fourth consecutive clean sheet intact. Nomads kept their discipline against a Caernarfon side still willing to find a way back into the game, making it 3-0 on 76 minutes, with a goal from Craig Curran, to all but secure the three points. The newly signed striker went clear in front of the Caernarfon end, and out paced the chasing defenders to fire a shot past the inside of Ramsay from around eight yards out. Andy Morrison’s third and final substitution handed a debut of different sorts, as he replaced Callum Roberts to bring on Aron Williams, who returned to the club from Buckley Town in January having first appeared for Nomads in 2013 after graduating from the academy. Already familiar with Deeside, he got stuck into the action quickly with a dangerous looking cross into the Caernarfon area as the game entered the final ten. Nomads showed no sign of letting up, with Wilde nearly getting on the scoresheet as he went one on one with Ramsay off his line, who managed to block Wilde’s effort with his legs. But Connah’s Quay did eventually get a fourth, as Michael Bakare stepped up to send a piledriving strike in from around 12 yards on 83 minutes. Nomads’ victory was confirmed at Deeside, but their night wasn’t over there, as they awaited the full time result of TNS’ clash with Bala Town to see if they would spend the next week in 2nd or 1st place of the JD Cymru Premier.

REFLECTIONS
David Rapson looks back at previous league games against TNS Nomads’ supporters of a nervous disposition should look away now because our past record against tonight’s visitors is not good! This will be our 59th meeting in the league since The New Saints entered the competition in 1993 when they played under the title of Llansantffraid. Since then we have ‘amassed’ just seven victories and four of them have come in the past five years. When opposing Llansantffraid between 1993 and 1996 we won two and drew two of the half dozen matches until a change of title, to Total Network Solutions ‘pulled the rug from beneath us.’ As champions for the past eight seasons, TNS have been the team to beat in everyone’s eyes and few have managed it. In fact, since the start of the 2011/12 campaign, TNS have played 280 league games and lost a mere 32, to thirteen different teams. Newtown’s recent victory was their fifth against TNS, with four of those being at Park Hall. Bangor City and Connah’s Quay have each beaten TNS four times during the period while Airbus UK Broughton and Carmarthen Town each claimed three victories. Aside from Newtown’s successes at Park Hall, TNS have lost only seven other home games on their own pitch since the start of the 2011/12 season. An astonishing record. Although our two clubs had met early in the 1993/94 season in a two-legged League Cup tie, remembered for Nomads coming from 3-0 down on aggregate to win on away goals, our first league encounter was on 12th February 1994 at the Halfway Ground when goals from Dave O’Gorman, Dave Davies and Scott Taylor cancelled out strikes from Billy Morris and Graham Ellis. The 2-2 draw at Treflan in May 1994 ensured The Saints kept their place in the league, for a Nomads victory would have sent Llansantffraid back to the Cymru Alliance twelve months after their promotion to the League of Wales. The following year Llansantffraid completed a league ‘double’ over us – the first of 15 such occasions. The 1995/96 season featured a goalless draw at the Halfway after Nomads had won 2-1 at Treflan on 28th October 1995. That remains our solitary victory in the away fixture after 29 attempts! Nomads’ team that day was as follows: Phil Collister, Gary Wynne, Mike Carroll, Darren Wynne, Barry Thomas, Carl Smyth, Stuart Rain, Marc Limbert, Danny McGoona, Peter Hughes and Chris Davies. In the midst of a run of ten unbeaten games Nomads took the lead in the eighth minute courtesy of Danny McGoona. An own goal just after the interval increased our lead before Tony Henry’s penalty kick left us with more than half an hour to hang on for the 8
Connah's Quay Nomads vs The New Saints
three points. We shared the points at Llansantffraid in each of the next two seasons before embarking on a run of 24 visits from which Nomads have gained one solitary point to date – a 0-0 draw in January 2016. There have been a few heavy defeats along the way none more embarrassing than being trounced 0-7 at home in November 2004 when Mike Wilde scored one of the goals, something he made a habit of doing over the years before Andy Morrison brought him to Deeside! That victory was The Saints’ biggest away win in the league at the time although this season a 12-0 success at Airbus UK Broughton usurped that, as well as two other huge away wins at Bangor City (April 2014) and Aberystwyth Town (August 2019). On the other hand, Nomads have lost ten of the previous meetings with TNS by just the odd goal. The most recent at Park Hall was one such defeat, on a night when Nomads could feel aggrieved at losing a game in which they performed so well. In 2009/10 The New Saints were pushed all the way for the championship by Llanelli yet TNS lost only two games and conceded a miserly 13 league goals in 34 games. That was the season in which Connah’s Quay found themselves demoted as a result of the league contracting from 18 teams to just a dozen. Nonetheless, it was The Nomads who inflicted one of those two losses when Mike Hayes scored in the 69th minute of the match at the Deeside Stadium on 5th February 2010. Earlier that season we had lost the away fixture by three goals to nil yet that scoreline fails to tell the whole story. Nomads battled heroically to keep the match scoreless until the 86th minute when Steve Abbot netted. A minute late Scott Ruscoe doubled the lead before Abbot added a third in the dying moments. It may have been a true reflection of The Saints’ superiority but harsh on the defeated team, nonetheless. This is the fifth consecutive season in which our two clubs have met in Phase Two. Our ratio of wins to losses in the 18 fixtures since the start of the 2015/16 season is an improvement on the overall statistics but still leaves us trailing in our opponents wake. The tide has not yet turned.

Connah's Quay Nomads vs The New Saints 9
A VIEW FROM THE STAND By Will Catterall
Hello and welcome to the Deeside Stadium under the floodlights for another massive Friday night game. We always have the ethos of our next game being the biggest ever, but there’s no denying that tonight is an especially significant occasion. Long-time fans and critics of our league have always lamented the lack of a title race in seasons gone by, but thanks to us, there can’t be any talk of that this time round. We go into tonight’s match top of the league, but will need a win to stay there against opposition who have time and time again showed why they’re the champions in games like these. We last met TNS over a month ago at Park Hall, where we lost 2-1 in a game that might have had a more favourable score line for us had certain things gone our way. But as Andy Morrison has already said, our reaction speaks volumes, as we’re unbeaten since. Tonight’s result will of course have an impact on the fate of the title come April, but there’s seven more vital games after this, and all ones where we’ll need all the support we can get. This season so far has been one of the best ever in terms of our growing fanbase, both home and away, and we hope to see even more of you backing the red and white army as we get down to the business end of the JD Cymru Premier.
Our next away day is in my opinion one of the toughest games of the whole season – Bala away. It has in recent seasons been a pivotal fixture for us, and of late we’ve picked up some fantastic victories there. It’s not an easy place to get to, but do let us know if you’re planning on making the journey down. For now, get behind the lads in what is bound to be a huge 90 minutes in the JD Cymru Premier, and another night of history at Deeside – Come on Nomads! Player of the Week: Michael Wilde An apt player of the week going into this fixture, Wildey spent several seasons at TNS where he rightfully earned the reputation as one of the league’s leading strikers. Since joining us he’s continued that form, quickly becoming a mainstay in our starting line up and lifting the JD Welsh Cup, Nathaniel MG Cup, and going on no less than four European tours. With seven goals in his last five games, we know he’ll be gunning for more tonight! Score Prediction: Nomads 2-1 TNS 10 Connah's Quay Nomads vs The New Saints

We’re also still fighting on two fronts, so make sure you’re here next week to see us take on Cardiff Met in the JD Welsh Cup quarter finals on Saturday the 29th for a 2:30pm kick off. A win there would see us reach the semi-finals of Wales’ premier domestic cup for the fifth consecutive time, and we’ve every intention of reaching the final for a third.
