EDITOR’S WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to Deeside Stadium for the first of a glut of fixtures here on Deeside as we will not leave our home for another seven competitive matches! We come into the game in good form, having not lost a game all season, conceding only two goals in the process. The journey to Cardiff Met last Sunday was a long one but when you get the result that we did, it makes it all worthwhile. Today's programme contains a lot of content including four match reports, an article from Trevor Green, Will Catterall and David Rapson as well as our usual look at the opposition. I'm hoping for another win today which will help cement us in the Top Six ahead of the split, and I am confident that if the team continue to play they way they have done so far, we will be right up there come January for the split. Six in a row at home for Nomads Welcome to Deeside Stadium for the first of six home league games in a row for The Nomads. Today's game sees 10th-placed Aberystwyth Town come to Deeside as The Nomads aim to stake a strong early claim for a place in the Top Six ahead of the split. With The Nomads currently sitting in second place on 12 points, a good run during these upcoming home games could see The Nomads give themselves a strong chance of finishing in the Top Six having leapfrogged Bangor City last weekend following their 4-0 defeat at the hands of TNS. Aber meanwhile will be looking to improve on their recent form, which has thus far seen them lose four of their opening six games in the league, conceding 12 goals in the process. Our last meeting is little over 11 months ago when the side from Park Avenue hit a smash and grab victory at Deeside Stadium. Goals from Stuart Jones and Chris Venables overturned Les Davies' early opener. Ahead of the game, Manager Andy Morrison said "Going into today's game, we will have to wait until the last minute before we can name the team. Every club has periods in the season where numbers are low due to injuries and suspensions and we are there now. Just as I thought we were looking at a fully fit squad by the end of the month, we now have seven players in the treatment room with four of them having no chance for today and the other three 50/50. I was so pleased with the performance and the way we started the game at Cardiff last week - no team could have lived with the pace, agression and intensity we showed in that first 30 minutes and we cruised to half time. We then, again, had to deal with injuries, changing shape and changing personnel, but the result was never in doubt. After watching Aber at last weekend, I know they will pose some serious threats - they posess quality players throughout and should have taken something from the game against Carmarthen. For me, the difference between the top three and bottom three are very small margins, such is the standard this season, that every game is a real challenge. We have had a recovery week, prepared well on Thursday night and I know that whatever team I put on the field toay will see every player giving it their all for the three points." Nomads conquer Cardiff Met in away win

The Nomads beat Cardiff Met 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League. Goals from Matty Williams and Les Davies meant The Nomads retained their unbeaten record in the league, despite a late goal from Adam Roscrow.

The game began and The Nomads took the lead with just six minutes gone, when an aerial ball came into the Cardiff area and fell to Williams, he shot low from around 12 yards to send the ball into the bottom right corner.

The game saw The Nomads travel to the capital for their first league meeting with newly promoted Cardiff Met, who had so far endured a tricky start to the season with four losses and one draw. The Nomads were looking to get back to winning ways after two

Controlling the game, the tempo of The Nomads’ play relaxed slightly, but not without good attacking movement from the Nathan Woolfe, Les Davies and Jay Owen. In the 23rd minute, The Nomads did manage to breakthrough again via an impressive 25 yard effort from Les Davies. Shooting low, his shot hit the left post and bounced onto the right post, before eventually crossing the line and further consolidating The Nomads’ hold on the game. One of The Nomads' best chances to further their lead came when Nathan Woolfe got into the Cardiff Met area and fought off two defenders to shoot low towards the left corner only for Fuller to push the shot away for a corner which was subsequently cleared. Towards the end of the half, Cardiff Met showed more of their attacking play, a feature that would be repeated at the end of the game. Corsby latched onto a cross into the Nomads area, sending it above the crossbar to keep The Nomads’ clean sheet intact for the interval. The Nomads were dealt a blow at the start of the second half, when Ian Kearney went down in great discomfort with a knee injury. He was able to limp off the pitch, and was replaced by Tom Field. The next period of the game saw John Danby go unchallenged, the home side having more possession but without creating any real goalscoring opportunities. However, Met’s persistence began to pay off, seen when with 20 minutes to go Roscrow had a shot go wide from 15 yards. The Nomads then brought Nathan Woolfe off with Nick Rushton his replacement, who went onto to chase a free ball all the way into the Cardiff Met area only to be beaten to it by the keeper. Nomads’ final change saw Wes Baynes go off for Matty Owen. Inside the last five minutes of the game Nomads’ victory looked to be all but confirmed, but Cardiff Met’s Roscrow reduced the deficit for his side in the 86th minute. Roscrow got inside the Nomads and area and hit the bottom right corner of the net with a controlled low strike. Boosted by their goal, the home side were further enthused by five minutes of additional time at the end of the game. Pushing for the equaliser, Jay Owen was forced to make an interception in the area before Danby caught a cross heading towards his goal. A challenge on Danby forced the keeper to receive treatment, bringing the total amount of game time to 98 minutes. Despite this addition, The Nomads held firm to come away from Cardiff with all three points from a controlled, professional performance.

Williams penalty seals draw with Lakesiders A Matty Williams penalty handed The Nomads a 1-1 draw with Bala Town on Saturday evening at Deeside Stadium. Former Nomad, Michael Hayes sent Bala ahead after just three minutes in the game televised live on S4C. Both teams would have wanted more from the game, coming into it with mixed form - Bala Town hoped to kick-start their season, having won one out of a possible four games in the league so far. The Nomads meanwhile, were unbeaten, but looking to make up

for a stalemate draw with Cefn Druids during the week. The game began and the crowd of 166 were thrown straight into the action when Hayes sent his side ahead on three minutes. Running through The Nomads' defensive line, Hayes struck the ball in powerfully from around 12 yards to shock The Nomads, who had not conceded in 580 minutes of Dafabet Welsh Premier League football. Going behind so early, The Nomads faced a difficult challenge in getting back into the game. Callum Morris won a corner from which Nathan Woolfe shot wide, before John Danby was forced to head the ball out of The Nomads' area in order to avoid a backpass and stop an oncoming Michael Hayes breaking through once again. The Nomads searched for an equaliser in the first half but with little results. Their best chance came when Michael

Wilde squared a ball to Les Davies, who was set to slot the ball in just yards off the Bala goal line, but missed the assist by inches. Despite The Nomadsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; efforts, they went in 0-1 down at the interval in what had been a subdued half, leaving Bala largely comfortable in their lead. The second half came and The Nomads set out to improve their performance, creating a chance when Field was flicked goalwards by Michael Wilde - he saw his first shot saved by Lynch and then yards out from goal he sent the rebound wide to the disbelief of many in the ground. This was the first of a number of missed opportunities for both The Nomads and Bala. After this chance, Lewis Short was forced off with an injury, being replaced by Sean Smith. In the 51st minute, Deeside Stadium was shocked to see referee Lee Evans send Balaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s David Thompson off with a straight red for an apparent off the ball elbow to substitute Smith. The Nomads' hopes for an equaliser were boosted by this, but their efforts were still not rewarded. A Baynes cross landed perfectly to Wilde who had a shot yards from goal blocked by Murtagh. New signing Shelton Payne then made his debut for The Nomads, replacing Jay Owen. He was involved straight away, sending a cross into the Bala area which Wilde headed but fouled a Bala defender whilst doing so. Former Nomad Ryan Edwards came on for Bala, and had the chance to get the probable winner for his side, receiving the ball yards out and in space inside The Nomads' area, but the ball bobbled over his foot yards from goal. Les Davies then scored for The Nomads, but his goal was ruled out by a foul committed by Michael Wilde whilst Davies headed the ball in. The Nomads made another change with Matty Williams coming on for Tom Field. This substitution proved its worth just four minutes later, when Williams converted a penalty kick for The Nomads. After Baynes was fouled by Valentine, Lee Owens pointed to the spot and gave Nomads the chance to finally get the equaliser. This made a tense finish for the game, with both teams still very capable of scoring another goal. This was proved when Michael Hayes broke free and looked set for his brace, but John Danby came off his line to make an excellent save with his feet. The Nomads now had all the momentum of the game and were displaying good quality in their build up play. Shelton Payne crossed to Michael Wilde who was practically on the Bala goal line, but he was unable to attach himself to the ball. The Nomads' onslaught on the Bala area continued, with efforts from the likes of Woolfe and Davies sending respective headers and shots just wide. After four minutes of injury time, The Nomads were forced to settle with their second draw of the week.

Nomads frustrated in Druids deadlock The Nomads recorded a goalless draw against Cefn Druids on Wednesday evening in a match played at The New Saints’ Park Hall stadium. Relocated as Druids’ home fixture due to the installation of a 3G pitch at The Rock, the game brought together The Nomads and Druids for the first time since early 2015, with Druids promoted back into the top flight at the end of last season. Druids named a strong squad which included Aaron Bowen and Mike Pritchard, with new loan signing from The Nomads, Ashley Ruane, unavailable against his

parent club. The Nomads started a line up that reintroduced Danny Harrison following suspension along with Matty Williams and Michael Wilde. The Nomads opened the game with dominance, Michael Wilde testing 'keeper Michael Jones twice within the first minute of the game, with a volley which forced a corner and a subsequent header from the same set piece. Nathan Woolfe, Les Davies and Matty Williams all enjoyed chances but were unable to take advantage of The Nomads’ hold on the game, which soon decreased as the half went on. Cefn Druids thought they had taken the lead in the 16th minute from a header assisted by a Jake Phillips free kick, but referee Kevin Parry had already whistled for a foul on John Disney.

Both teams made claims for a penalty, with The Nomads claiming a hand ball had been committed in the area by a Cefn Druids defender, while the 'home' side were unhappy with a Les Davies challenge in The Nomads’ area. Lewis Short was effective with both his darting runs down the wing and long throws into the box which influenced The Nomads’ attacks regularly. Despite this, Nomads could not break the deadlock before the interval which was a justified reflection of what had grown to be an evenly contested game. This continued into the second half, which started with a substitution that brought Callum Morris on in place of Nathan Woolfe. Jordan Barrow sent a well took cross into The Nomads' area on 49 minutes, but without any Druid striker to send the ball goalwards. The Nomads’ second and final substitution saw Matty Owen replace Tom Field who had been captaining the side with the absence of George Horan through injury. As time began to run out, The Nomads increased their attacks on the Druids goal mouth but to little effect, with almost every long throw or cross being cleared by a well organised defence. The best chance of the game went to Druids, when near the 80th minute mark Barrow sent a low cross across an open Nomads goal mouth, which would almost certainly have led to a goal if a Druids shirt would have been available to get a touch on the ball. With ten minutes to go, The Nomads went all out to try and snatch a victory with many long throws from Lewis Short entering the area, but after two Nomads unsuccessful corners deep within the five minutes of injury time, both sides were forced to settle with a point.

Wilde wins it for Nomads The Nomads secured a 1-0 victory in their first home game of the Dafabet Welsh Premier League season. A goal from Michael Wilde in the 69th minute was enough to take all three points in a tight affair. The Nomads entered the game in high spirits, with an undefeated record so far in the league, drawing to Carmarthen and beating Bangor 2-0. Newtown matched this as they also had four points in the league from a draw to Bala and win over Carmarthen Town. 12

Both sides were looking to retain their positive form, but knew it would be difficult with strong lineups on either side of the pitch. The Nomads welcomed Ian Kearney back into the lineup following a suspension, who was captain for the day with George Horan out injured following his knock against Bangor last week. Newtown started formidable names such as Oswell and Sutton, with new signing Craig Williams also in their first eleven. The game began and the first real chance of the game came in the seventh minute, when two shots towards The Nomadsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; goal were blocked by Danby. Newtown continued to attack, with a header from Tom Goodwin going just wide minutes later. After a high tempo opening to the game, the

intensity of play dropped but not without both sides trying to create. Tom Field went on a run towards goal only to be intercepted, before sending a tricky corner ball into the Newtown area which was ruled out by a foul on a Robins defender. Newtown maintained a steady pace of attacks on The Nomads' goalmouth, which whilst tricky, were well dealt with by The Nomads' back line of Kearney, Disney, Short and Baynes. Before half time, both sides had chances to sneak a goal when Jason Oswell went yards from The Nomads' goal only to tackled by John Disney at the last second. A 44th minute corner for The Nomads was swung in by Woolfe for there to be claims that the ball had crossed the line by The Nomads, but referee Dean John waved them away and soon whistled for half time. The second half began and The Nomads had two significant chances go amiss within the first five minutes. A powerful effort from Jay Owen was stopped by David Jones from 10 yards out, before the Nomads missed out on a penalty. Jay Owen was brought down in the box, forcing Dean John to award a penalty to The Nomads. Callum Morris stepped up and hit a powerful shot which unfortunately bounced off the crossbar to deny The Nomads a goal and keep the game goalless. Shortly after, The Nomads made a change which saw Morris leave the field with Les Davies coming on, in an effort for The Nomads to get ahead with around 25 minutes left to play. This much-sought after goal came in the 69th minute, when from a deft Wes Baynes cross, Michael Wilde slotted the ball in at close range near at the back post. Despite their lead, The Nomads were up against it from Newtown at times following this goal, seen when Ryan Kershaw edged a shot wide from 12 yards. Nomads saw a possible game-winning chance go amiss when Les Davies headed another Baynes cross just above the goal on 76 minutes. The Nomads then made another substitution which saw Matty Owen come on for Tom Field to face his old club. A tough ten minutes followed for Nomads as they held onto the lead. Newtown were awarded a free kick around 25 yards from goal, but John Danby rose up to catch the effort. Following three minutes of injury time during which Nomads used the experience of Les Davies to hold up the ball, full time was confirmed handing Nomads a well earned victory.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND

BY WILL CATTERALL Hello and welcome to a view from the stand, where we’re inviting you to get comfortable at Deeside as we enter a run of seven consecutive home fixtures. After a start to this year’s Dafabet Welsh Premier League campaign that saw us hit the road for four out of six games, it’s great to have the next month spent at home. Last season, our strength at Deeside was vital in securing the top six at Europe, and over the next few weeks we will look to build a fortress once again. It’s no secret that we wanted to have more points on the board at this stage, but that also highlights the standards that this club aims for as at time of going to press we sit 2nd in the league and undefeated. If not for some frustrating draws against Carmarthen, Druids and Bala where for large parts we dominated but just couldn’t find a goal, we would indeed have 18 points. We have to remember that our season started in June in Europe, and that there’s plenty more football to play to get us at our absolute best. Some critics have already lamented the league as boring, with TNS starting with a 100% record as expected. This was harsh, with plenty going in the league below them. Bangor have invigorated the league with some strong performances, whilst times are looking uncertain for Airbus who sit 11th in the table having only won one game so far. Without a doubt Rhyl have had the most sensational start, coming back from a 10-0 defeat to TNS to win three league games on the bounce. They play us here on September 25 in game that isn’t to be missed.

Our opponents today come into the game having won two games and lost four so far, but in this league you can’t rule out any team on the day. Aberystwyth have always been a tough outfit to go up against and we will have to battle for the full 90 to kick off our super seven run of fixtures with a win. BY TREVOR GREEN Good afternoon and welcome to our friends from Aberystwyth. Always good company and yet very difficult opponents, Aber are a mainstay of the WPL and one of the reasons it’s such a good league to be members of. They do it properly - well run, well budgeted and always just a bit understated. An example to some. They have had a difficult start to their season, winning at Llandudno and Airbus but losing the other four to Rhyl, TNS, Bangor and Carmarthen. All six games (including the home one played at Newtown) have been away matches. As I’ve said in every programme so far; this season’s fixture list is a mess. It’s simply awful and no way to conduct a league at this level. Hopefully, this is a one-off due to the developments causing disruption. This is Aber’s sixth away game, and today we begin a run of six consecutive home league games and then we go into five consecutive away games. Why everyone else are not up in arms I do not know. People bemoan our league's low attendances and it’s a fact that gates are poor, but in the 2016/17 season it’s as well we don’t depend on income through the gates to survive because if we did some would go to the wall. Aber are one of three clubs laying a new 3G playing surface in season and it will more than make up for the temporary disruption in years to come and once again shows the sound planning that epitomises the club. Well, if you’ve got a pair of boots you might get a game for the first team at present. I have never known a run like it - it seems almost every game sees another player fall. Currently injured are; Wes Baynes, Lewis Short, Chris Rimmer, Ian Kearney, Michael Pearson, Michael Wilde and George Horan. We are delayed getting Conner Harwood cleared through FIFA and it’s a miracle that we can get a competitive side on to the field at all, yet alone remain

undefeated. We have seen outstanding performances from many and it’s a testimony to the preparation and planning that we are up in second place after all of this despite the fact that four of the first six matches have been away from home. Well done everyone. Sunday’s long distance trip to Cardiff sums things up nicely - we were without George Horan, Lewis Short and Michael Wilde from our last game, but welcomed back Ian Kearney. The usual high power start forced Cardiff back and we were 2-0 up after 25 minutes, chances came for a third but weren’t taken. It looked like a very comfortable win against a good side that put a lot of pace into their attacking. However, on 45 minutes Wes [Baynes] became walking wounded but carried on minus the pace and devastating counter attacking ability we normally see from him. Then on 49 minutes Ian Kearney went down with a knee injury - and after his season out last year, we feared a re-occurrence - the injury forced him off but the good news is that although he might be out for a while it was the other knee.

We re-organised and had to dig in deep to hold what we had, with John Disney outstanding once again. We held on to win 2-1 - important, gutsy and a sign of what we might be when everyone is fully fit. George and Wes might play today; others have less of a chance just yet. We are back here for one of the season's big games on Tuesday night, Llandudno have not started as well as Alan Morgan might have hoped, but we know they are a very good side. They, Bala and Newtown, will fight us all the way in the battle for second place this season and although it's only September, make no doubt this is a six pointer. We need your support - with the injuries we are up against it. Both Aber and Llandudno are good sides and both are well capable of winning. LEAGUE OF WALES 2000/01 BY DAVID RAPSON The summer of 2000 was, in general, dull and damp and football fans had little to excite them during the European Championships as British involvement was minimal. Our League of Wales season began with a trip down to Mid Wales to oppose Rhayader Town and the day became something of a portent for the campaign ahead. The team arrived late following traffic delays in Newtown and were caught cold when the home side scored an early goal. Fortunately Stuart Rain came up with an equaliser to make the homeward journey a little more boisterous than it might have been. The following Sunday we entertained Bangor City in what was Nomads’ 300th game in the league since its inception eight years earlier. Neville Powell was at pains to point out in his programme notes that Connah’s Quay had finished the highest of the six North Wales teams the previous season and this on a tight budget. On the other hand Bangor City had won the Welsh Cup! Another 1-1 draw ensued but the Citizen’s 90th-minute goal was scored by former Nomad Jamie Hughes to add to our frustration. Belle Vue, Rhyl was our next port of call where, in an entertaining game Nomads came back from 3-2 down to win thanks to late strikes from Steve Futcher and Jon Kenworthy and this after having been reduced to ten men with the dismissal of Steve Hopkins. A single goal home loss to Barry Town was countered a week later by a 2-1 success away to Llanelli and then a goalless draw with Haverfordwest County. We went into that game in third place just four points behind league leaders Cwmbran Town and surprise-package Oswestry Town, the latter eventually slipping to finish fourth from bottom. While all this was going on in the league, Nomads were involved in both the FAW Premier Cup and the Gilbert League Cup. As both competitions featured mini-leagues we had played 12 games by the start of October when the Welsh Cup began. Participation in the FAW Premier Cup, as a result of finishing 7th in the league in the previous season, was a bonus but the draw for the group stage soon brought us down to earth. We found ourselves pitted against Barry Town, TNS and Swansea City and lost all six games despite going 2-0 up during the early stages of the first game against Swansea. The group stage ran right through until February 2001 when we had to travel to Llanelli’s ground to face a strong Swansea City side on a wet Thursday night. That we lost only 1-0 in front of almost 1,700 fans failed to make the occasion memorable. Early autumn league matches at Carmarthen Town and at home to Caersws both ended in 3-0 defeats and the inability to win at home was causing concern. The only successes at the Deeside 18

Stadium had been in two cup games the second of which was against Gresford Athletic in the Welsh Cup and earned us a tilt at Maesteg Park in the third round. Despite having slipped out of the League of Wales six years earlier, Maesteg came to Deeside and won 2-1. There was a hint of desperation in the matchday programme notes for the visit of Oswestry Town on 2nd December 2000. We had suffered more postponed matches during another wet autumn and had failed to score at home in the league since August. Oswestry were already moving down the league after a bright start but two goals were all they needed to collect the three points. Our next game away to TNS yielded nothing but then a 2-1 win at Cefn Druids brightened the mood prior to Christmas. Aberystwyth Town were our Boxing Day visitors and a glance at the league table proved that had our home form matched that ‘on the road’ then Nomads would occupy a place in the league’s top four. Aber won 2-1 but at least Nomads scored. A trip to Farrar Road on Friday 5th January 2001 brought us a very pleasing 1-0 win with Stuart Rain netting his eighth goal of the campaign to leave Bangor second from bottom with just two wins from 14 games. Nomads, on the other hand, climbed to 11th position although 17 of our 19 league points had been gathered from our away fixtures. A home win arrived at last on 27th January at the expense of Llanelli (2-1) when our goals were scored by Carl Smyth and George Horan who was playing only his fourth game for the club. We had managed to squeeze through into the knockout stages of the Gilbert League Cup and faced a trip to the old Park Hall ground, home of Oswestry Town in the quarter-final. We expected to win but didn’t, going down 2-0 to end our interest in cup competitions for another season. Nomads enjoyed 75% possession on a soggy pitch but the home side scored with their only real attack of the first-half. The evening became misty and cold and the playing surface ever more treacherous but still we couldn’t find the net and a second goal for the team in blue did for Nomads. As it transpired the loss at Oswestry was a turning point in our season. The next weekend Nomads entertained third placed Carmarthen Town, a team we had lost to in seven of the previous eight meetings. A 2-1 victory (goals from Andy Griffiths and John-Paul Stanhope) was secured which heralded the start of a 15 game run-in to the end of the season of which we were to lose only three. Early spring witnessed the Nomads going six games without defeat gaining victories over Port Talbot Athletic (away) and UWIC Inter Cardiff in addition to the win against Carmarthen Town and picking up points from games with Caersws, Newtown and Afan Lido. The month of March ended with a surprise 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Port Talbot who had slipped below us in the league following our win at their ground only three weeks before. Easter week brought us further victories over Cefn Druids and Oswestry Town (a satisfying 3-1 win at Park Hall) and a creditable 1-1 draw at Aberystwyth in front of a crowd in excess of 500. A 2-1 defeat at Cwmbran Town was followed by a re-arranged game at home to the same team a week later. The Crows were occupying second place in the league table, six points behind Barry Town but with a game in hand and 16 points ahead of Newtown in third place. As if that wasn’t enough of a challenge for the Nomads, we were obliged to entertain Afan Lido the following day, a Sunday. In the event Connah’s Quay won both games by 1-0; Andy Griffiths netting the winner against Cwmbran and Paul Mazzarella doubling his total for the season 24 hours later against Lido. We still had to play two more home games during the first week of May, losing 1-2 against TNS but finishing with a flourish against Rhayader Town. We should have entertained Rhayader on 30th December but the rain had turned the pitch into a morass. Instead the team took the field on an early summer evening and romped to a 5-nil win to register our 50th point of the campaign and a finishing position of ninth. The late surge helped to gloss over the disappointments of the first two thirds of a season that has been largely forgotten. The Nomads vs Aberystwyth Town

ABER'S RECENT HISTORY

In 1987 Aber returned to the Welsh League (South). They were three times runners-up before their inclusion as founder members of the League of Wales. Aber achieved their best LoW position - 3rd in their first season and the club's administrative and social set up are now well established. After struggling for a few seasons in the League, and flirting with relegation in 1996/7, it took until February for the Black & Greens to gain a home win. Aberystwyth at last found some success in 1998/9 when they qualified to represent Wales in the UEFA InterToto cup competition. They did this by virtue of finishing fourth in the league on 57 points behind Barry on 76, Inter Cable-Tel on 63 and Cwmbran who took third place on goal difference. Manager, Meirion Appleton made way for former Wolves, Derby County and Coventry City midfielder Barry Powell. This took place part-way through the season as a result of Aber crashing 5-0 at home to Caersws in a league game. Powell took over the reins of the club and led the Black & Greens into European competition for the first time. It was a memorable event with Aberystwyth narrowly losing 3-4 over two legs against Floriana of Malta. The success of European qualification brought many changes to Park Avenue. A new BBC studio and TV gantry, followed by the new "Dias" stand which brought the number of seats in the two stands up to nearly 600. The "Dias" stand being named after club legend David "Dias" Williams who holds the club scoring record of 476 goals in only 433 games between 1966 and 1983. The pressures of maintaining the standards achieved in 1999, and the ongoing upgrading of 22

the stadium left the club financially stretched in the 2000/2001 season. Consequently they were unable to repeat the feat of attaining a European berth, just missing out by three points, although the club gained entry to the FAW Premier cup competition for the third year running. They managed to progress to the quarter-finals twice. Barry Powell paid the price for his failure to qualify for Europe, and left the club by mutual consent. Powell was replaced at the beginning of the 2001/2 season by Frank Gregan. Frank had a very impressive background in English non-league football and was unanimously voted into the job as new manager prior to the start of the season. He was responsible for bringing in several players with extensive experience in the English pyramid, but it took too long for him to produce any kind of consistency on the field of play. When Gregan was linked with the Dr Martens League Western division club, Weston-super-Mare - and the team suffered an ignominious home exit from the Welsh Cup at the hands of CC Sports league Aberaman Athletic in October 2001 - the writing was on the wall for Mr Gregan. This was combined with a poor away record and an exit from the lucrative latter stages of the FAW Premier cup at the hands of Caersws. Gary Finley took over as player/manager immediately after Gregan departed for Weston. There was an instant improvement in form and with minimal additions to the squad despite most of Gregan's signings departing, a top eight finish looked possible. The club just missed out on the FAW Premier cup ending up in ninth place in the league on 51 points which was seven points adrift of the UEFA InterToto cup spot claimed by Caersws. They elected to play their home tie in the competition at Park Avenue, and like Carmarthen

Town did the year before, Park Avenue witnessed the third undefeated Euro performance in four seasons, as Caersws drew 1-1. Finley took the club to equal its best-ever finish of fourth in 2003/4 and again qualify for Europe, via the Uefa InterToto Cup, but following a policy decision to base the team on more local players, Finley departed with the Merseyside contingent and David Burrows took over as player/manager. The change of strategy produced a worsening of results in 2004/5, but the club's management decided to stick with the Ceredigion player policy despite seeing Park Avenue attendances slump by nearly 40%. The club also received a further set-back in December 2004 when a serious fire destroyed much of the social club's facilities, ruling out the ground for the staging of cup finals until the new John Charles lounge was opened in 2005. After several undistinguished seasons, the Seasiders reached the final of the Welsh Cup in 2009 under manager Brian Coyne, only to be beaten 2-0 by Bangor City. Coyne stepped down early the following season with Alan Morgan appointed as the new boss, and the club had one of it's best finishes for years, finished in 4th in the 2009/10 season, narrowly missing out on qualification for Europe to Port Talbot Town. Then under the first season of the Welsh Premier League Super 12, Aberystwyth, although in top 6 for most of the first half of the season, saw themselves in the bottom half of the table at the mid season split, being beaten to the top half again by Port Talbot. The club finished in 7th place, before beating Airbus in the Europa League playoff quarter

final, and eventually losing out to Neath in the Semi-Final. The 2011/2012 season was something of a struggle, with ill-discipline taking its toll on the performances of the team overall. Aberystwyth Town found itself in the bottom 6 again, and in a real relegation battle. After a defeat to Cymru Alliance side Cefn Druids in the Welsh Cup, Alan Morgan stepped aside and the board made no hesitation in bringing back Tomi Morgan. Under Tomi the team rallied and managed to finish in 8th place, and so managed to qualify once again for the end of season Europa League playoffs. After beating Airbus in the quarter finals, Aber faced Llanelli, and although the team all performed admirably, it was to be another season of disappointment as Llanelli won in extra time

ABER'S MANAGEMENT

MATTHEW BISHOP - Manager Aberystwyth Town FC announced the appointment of Matthew Bishop as First Team Manager of the Club in May 2016. Penrhyncoch-based Matthew, or "Bish" as he is fondly known, had just completed an incredible season as Assistant Manager at Hereford FC with a Wembley FA Vase Final. The Bulls had already won the Midland Football League Premier Division, League Cup and Herefordshire Challenge Cup in a remarkable first season for the Club. He previously Coached Newport County to promotion into the Blue Square Premier in 2009/10 with a record points total, and has also worked with Aldershot Town, Wales Under 16s, 17s and England Under 20s sides. Matthew is currently employed by the FA as Senior National Coach Developer and of course holds the prerequisite Pro Licence Certificate. 42 year old Bish played eight games for the Black and Greens in their first two WPL seasons (1992-4) before moving to Bangor City, Conwy United and Rhayader, making a total of 61 WPL appearances, scoring once. WAYNE JONES - Assistant Manager Wayne, aged 36, joined the club from Haverfordwest County where he carried out the role of First Team Manager for three years. In this role he inspired the Club to promotion from the Welsh League into the Welsh Premier League in May 2015 and he oversaw the development of a number of talented young players into impressive WPL prospects. Previously manager at Newcastle Emlyn before joining the coaching staff at the Bridge Meadow, Wayne worked as assistant manager with Derek Brazil and Micky Ellis before being appointed manager in May 2013. Prior to his Managerial Career Carmarthen based Wayne had an impressive Career as a WPL Player, making 295 appearances and scoring 11 goals between 1996 and 2008 for both Haverfordwest and Carmarthen as a combative left back.
