EDITOR’S WELCOME Hello and welcome to the final game of 2016, and what a year it has been! 30 December 2015 saw us sit 5th in the league after two months of Andy Morrison at the helm having won nine and lost nine, but I don't think anyone could have quite predicted the 2016 we were going to have. The dramatic victory here over Airbus in the play off final, the amazing victory over Stabaek and the impressive performances against a very strong Vojvodina side, followed by securing our top six place with a few games to go in the league. Away from the first team, our U19's reached the Welsh Youth Cup final for the first time since 1946 and Chris Coleman opened our new 3G facility, The Quay 3G. Overall, an amazing 2016, and if we can maintain that curve into 2017, I'll be a happy man! Come on The Nomads! Nik

MATCH PREVIEW

2016 draws to a close with Airbus visit Today's game marks the final match of the 2016 calendar year, and what a year it has been for the club. For the first time ever, we reached the Europa League Qualifying Rounds, advancing to the second round where we were defeated 3-1 on aggregate by Serbian side FK Vojvodina who currently sit third in the Serbian Super Liga behind Red Star and Partizan Belgrage. That journey all began with a victory over today's opponents in the dramatic play-off final here at Deeside in May where a solitary Wes Baynes strike gave The Nomads the victory over Andy Morrison's former side. The Airbus team on that day featured a number of players who are now at Deeside including the injured duo of Ian Kearney and Michael Pearson along with Jay Owen who has now made over 20 appearances for The Nomads this season. Since that game, fortunes have flipped for both sides with The Nomads continuing to push for Europe with their targets on automatic qualification this season, while Airbus have found themselves near the foot of the table for the majority of the season since the departure of Andy Preece just days before the beginning of the season. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said "Last season's encounters with Airbus were very close, culminating in that amazing play off final that took us to Europe. I expect the same this season - a lot has changed since that afternoon in May and both club's fortunes have gone in different directions, but this game is a local derby and form goes out the window. Airbus, like us, have had their fair share of misfortune with injuries, suspensions and players leaving the club - Thommo has had to totally rebuild his squad. Ater losing so many key players that were a major part of the success they experienced, it was always going to take time to get things right. Having worked with Thommo for a number of years, I have no doubt that with the right backing, he will bring back those great times we experienced together." Morrison concluded; "We will have to be at the top of our game as they still have players who can win a game on their own - their recent performances against Bangor and Bala, which we had watched showed that they are more than a match for any team in this very tight league."

Quigley (4'), Draper (47'), Rawlinson (58') Dafabet Welsh Premier League | Saturday 17th December 2016 Deeside Stadium, Connah's Quay | Attendance: 274

Nomads succumb to unbeaten Saints The Nomads were defeated for the first time at home this season on Saturday evening after a 3-0 defeat to The New Saints. Scott Quigley scored after just four minutes, with Draper and Rawlinson adding goals in the 46th and 57th minutes respectively. The result, a first home defeat of the season for The Nomads, was a disappointing one as they had played well throughout the game, with the scoreline failing to reflect their performance. With John Danby out injured, Jon Rushton started in goal for The Nomads, with Nick Rushton and Nathan Woolfe also starting. The New Saints named 6

The Nomads vs Airbus UK Broughton

an ever strong lineup with captain Paul Harrison, Ryan Brobbel and Scott Quigley in manager Craig Harrison’s first eleven. The game began and The New Saints found the net after just four minutes, when a defensive error from Baynes meant Quigley could send a left footed half volley from 25 yards into The Nomads' net. Despite this early goal, The Nomads went on to put on an impressive first half performance against the champions. After forcing a corner in the 11th minute, Les Davies had a low shot blocked just eight yards from the TNS goal. 20 minutes in and The Nomads had fought their way back into the game, and began to put the TNS goalmouth under some serious pressure. A Nathan Woolfe cross was headed just wide by

Davies who had been tussling for the header with Marriott, before Callum Morris saw a strike blocked inside the Saints' area. In the 31st minute, an opportunity fell to Jay Owen inside the box, only to see his shot go wide. Shortly after, The Nomads nearly equalised as Paul Harrison struggled with a Wes Baynes corner, as the 'keeper parried the ball narrowly wide. As the half went on, The Nomads’ attacks increased, with Nathan Woolfe unable to get a clean connection on a dangerous cross from Wes Baynes to the left of the Saints goal. Despite further efforts, many involving long throw-in’s from Lewis Short, the score remained 0-1 at half time. Although The Nomads were trailing, there was an atmosphere of confidence around Deeside that the home side could come out of the game with a result after matching TNS for the majority of the first half. These hopes however, were seriously damaged when Greg Draper scored just one minute after the restart. Breaking through The Nomads’ defensive line to go clear on goal, Draper struck a clean effort low into the bottom left corner of the goal to leave The Nomads with a mountain to climb for the second half. The Nomads looked to retaliate to yet another early TNS goal, with Davies shooting just wide from the edge of the TNS area in the 51st minute. The Saints got their third and final goal when after a scramble in The Nomads' area, the ball fell to Connell Rawlinson who slotted the ball in just a few yards from The Nomads' goal. Changes for The Nomads saw Wes Baynes and Nick Rushton substituted for Chris Rimmer and Declan Poole, but this did little to change a game now dominated by TNS. The Nomads still created chances but did not finish them clinically, with Poole running into the Saints area on 71 minutes only to have his shot loop past the left post. The Nomads’ best chance of the game came when Les Davies headed against the crossbar after connecting with a cross from Woolfe in the 77th minute. After Danny Harrison came off for Matty Owen, The Nomads continued to push but The New Saints used their experience and passing play to see out the remaining ten and three additional minutes of play. The result does not affect The Nomads’ league position of second, but reduces the gap between themselves and third placed Bala Town to three points following The Lakesiders' 3-0 victory over Llandudno earlier in the day.

NOMADS' ARCHIVE

WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE 2008/09 BY DAVID RAPSON It was literally in with the ‘new’ for the 2008/2009 campaign as the Nomads adopted a new name with new owners, a new chairman, secretary, director of football, manager, assistant, coach and many new players! So it was that gap Connah’s Quay FC entertained Haverfordwest County on 16th August 2008. Steve O’Shaughnessy replaced Jim Hackett as first team manager assisted by Roger Preece and Nick Hughes while Levi Lloyd joined the club as director of football. Trevor Green came in as secretary with Stewart Roberts taking on the role of chief executive. The first team kit was kindly sponsored by Safetyworks Ltd. Goals from Danny Forde and Liam Loughlin ensured a 2-1 victory over Haverfordwest although goalkeeper Chris Maxwell (on loan from Wrexham) proved his worth with a couple of stunning saves. Indeed, throughout the first half of the season Chris came up with many brilliant performances and it is no surprise that today he is Preston North End’s regular ‘keeper in the Championship. A week later Neath were trounced 5-0 at the Stadium allowing The Nomads a brief stay at the very top of the league table! So brief, in fact, that despite our third league game of the season also being at home we succumbed by the odd goal in three to Aberystwyth Town. A win at Port Talbot with goals from Tommy Mutton and Loughlin was balanced out by a similar two goal defeat at Carmarthen Town so that after five games we lay fifth in the table but already six points behind a strong Rhyl side that had won every game. Attendances had increased for each home game and 327 turned up to see Bangor City gain a 3-1 victory over The Nomads in mid-September when Chris Sharpe, son of the former Everton striker and Bangor City manager, Graeme, scored twice. Twelve months earlier a decent start to the season was followed by an almighty slump as winter set in so it was important that the odd defeat was counteracted by a victory this time around and so it proved a week after the Bangor game when Andy Alston’s first league goal ensured we came away from Caersws with all three points. Despite a 2-0 loss at all-conquering Rhyl, we kept clean sheets against Airbus UK Broughton (0-0) and Technogroup Welshpool (1-0) to remain in contention at the top of the table. A 1-2 defeat followed away to The New Saints when, with Chris Maxwell unavailable, Craig Vernon was injured in the warm-up and third choice ‘keeper Mike Price was called into the team only to concede twice inside the first quarter-hour. Thereafter, he kept TNS at bay allowing Kieran Quinn to reduce the arrears early in the second-half. NEWI Cefn Druids, next to bottom with a solitary victory to show from 11 games, were next up on Deeside but shocked The Nomads by taking all three points. Peter Doran 12

The Nomads vs Airbus UK Broughton

gave us the lead seconds after the interval but Druids scored twice in three minutes and despite a Craig Jones equaliser in the 71st minute, Mark Stewart grabbed his second and Druids’ winner three minutes later. Adam Dickinson’s return from a year long absence following his cruciate ligament injury was longawaited and it took him a while to settle back into the team. He scored his first goal of the season in a memorable game at home to Newtown on 29th November, played in foggy conditions. The Robins scored twice in the first four minutes but we stormed back to equalise through two more Peter Doran goals before Dickinson gave us the lead with ten minutes left. A penalty converted by Craig Williams in the 89th minute earned the visitors a 3-3 draw. Doran found the net once more as Llanelli, second in the table, were brushed aside in mid-December by The Nomads who were full value for the 3-1 scoreline. Christmas had rarely produced good cheer for our team but on 27th December 2008 we had nobody to blame but ourselves. In a quite remarkable match at The Traeth, gap Connah’s Quay romped into a 5-1 lead with 19 minutes remaining – and still lost! Porthmadog were on a run of four consecutive defeats in which they had conceded 16 goals prior to those strikes from Loughlin, Doran, Craig Jones (2) and Michael Cronshaw. Instead of hanging their heads, Porthmadog made a valiant attempt to gain something from the match once Rhys Roberts and a Mike Foster penalty had reduced the arrears. When John Rowley scored with still nine minutes left the home side were in fifth gear and it was no surprise when Marc Lloyd-Williams equalised in the 86th minute. The Nomads were stunned but worse was to follow as the game seemed to last an eternity allowing enough time for Lloyd-Williams to grab his second and an incredible 6-5 victory in the fifth minute of added time. A break of three weeks followed courtesy of the winter weather and it was April before our players could say they had recovered from the trauma of Boxing Day at Porthmadog. Between January and March we lost eight of 11 league games including two 0-6 losses at Bangor City and Cefn Druids, the latter leaving us below The Ancients in the league table and uncomfortably near the bottom. Thankfully, a trio of victories over Prestatyn Town, Newtown and Porthmadog (the latter being sweet and very necessary revenge) saw The Nomads rapidly climb back up to half way prior to our final home game of the season against Caernarfon Town. The Canaries were already relegated having won just four league games all season. An own goal just before the break gave us the lead in an uninspiring performance and it was typical of the latter part of our season that Ged Courtney, a former Nomads player, should net an equaliser in the 89th minute. Nevertheless, once again we had kept our membership of the WPL intact since day one back in August 1992 and that point against Caernarfon earned us ninth place – just inside the top half of the league. We had little cup success during the campaign losing 0-1 away to Bangor City in the second round of the Welsh Cup and failing to qualify from our group in the Loosemores League Cup despite twice beating Prestatyn Town. Only one team qualified from each group and, needless to say, in ours that was The New Saints. With the likelihood of a severe reduction in the number of teams competing in the WPL from the start of 2010/2011, the following campaign was going to be very important for every club. AIRBUS' HISTORY

With changes in the factory name the football team has followed suit, being known at various times as VickersArmstrong, de Havilands, Hawker Siddeley, British Aerospace, BAe Systems and Airbus UK. The club is now firmly established as Airbus UK Broughton and, until the end of the 2003/04 season, played its football in the Cymru Alliance, the second tier of the Welsh soccer pyramid. The club was formed in 1946 and has played in both Chester & District League and the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area). Their last move, into the Welsh pyramid system, saw them canter to the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division Two title during the 1991/92 season winning it by a clear 19 points from Gresford Athletic Reserves. In that season they won 28 of their 34 matches and scored a remarkable 130 goals, an average of almost four goals per game. They also reached the NEWFA Challenge Cup final losing narrowly to Gresford Athletic. They then spent four seasons in Division One, the first two seasons finishing sixth then, in the third season, two places better in fourth. Season 1995/96 saw a further promotion, finishing runners-up behind Wrexham Colts at the end of the campaign: enough to see them move into the Premier Division of the Welsh National League along with the divisional champions. Once again they spent four seasons at that level, the first two witnessing steady consolidation, finishing seventh and sixth respectively. In 1998/99, the side pushed hard for the championship but could only finish runners-up once again, a mere two points behind eventual champions Corwen Amateurs. At last, in 1999/2000, British Aerospace went one better and won the title with 21 victories from 30 matches, finishing their programme four points ahead of Ruthin Town and Penycae. This success meant promotion once

14

The Nomads vs Airbus UK Broughton

again, into the Cymru Alliance league and to coincide with the promotion the club changed its name from British Aerospace to Airbus UK. Their first season in the Cymru Alliance was something of a struggle, eventually finishing in a creditable 11th-place with 10 wins and 14 defeats. Unfortunately, the campaign was badly affected by the outbreak of foot and mouth disease which disrupted much of life in Wales. Continuing the pattern seen after previous promotions, the second term saw a steady improvement and in the 2001/02 Airbus UK finished in eighth spot with 16 wins. The club was clearly ambitious and again showed signs of progress in the 2002/03 season, achieving their highest ever finish of fifth spot in the Cymru Alliance and reaching the NEWFA Challenge Cup final, losing narrowly on penalties. 2003/04 was tremendously successful when Airbus UK took the Cymru Alliance title with considerable ease, winning it by 19 points from closest rivals Buckley Town, and thus gained promotion to the national league competition, the Welsh Premier. Ground improvements 'The Wingmakers' as they are known carried out steady improvements to their ground sited just inside the massive Airbus Works in Broughton, near Chester. A new stand was built with a pavilion incorporating changing rooms being completed early in 2004 and two more stands were later added on the opposite touchline and at the Runway End, bringing seating capacity to more than 500. Floodlights were installed in time for the beginning of the 2004/05 season in the Welsh Premier League. The first two seasons in the Welsh Premier League were something of a struggle as Airbus UK came to terms

with the higher standards. The club battled hard to avoid relegation and appointed the former Wrexham midfielder Gareth Owen as player-manager following two seasons at nearby gap Connah's Quay Nomads. Performances gradually improved and the Wingmakers finished 12th in 2006/07 earning a spot in the FAW Premier Cup for the first time. The following season brought 11 victories and 42 points to finish in 11th place. Gareth Owen moved to Rhyl during the 2008 close season and the former Middlesbrough player Craig Harrison assumed the managerial reins having previously been assistant to Owen at The Airfield. However, after three and a half years, Harrison moved on to TNS and was replaced by Andy Preece as director of football with ex-Manchester City defender Andy Morrison as his assistant. There followed the most successful period in the club's history. Finishing a creditable seventh in the league and reaching the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup, the club embarked on its most successful Welsh Premier League campaign in 2012/13. After an exciting climax to the season, the Wingmakers clinched runners-up spot with a 2-0 home win over Bangor City to clinch a first-ever place in Europe. Three players - Lee Owens, Ian Kearney and Wayne Riley - were included in the WPL team of the season chosen by the 12 league managers. And Owens, along with Steve Tomassen and Preece, were nominated for the player of the season, young player of the season and manager of the season awards. The following campaign, 2013/14, was even better as the club again finished runners-up to TNS in the WPL, closing the gap by eight points on the previous season

and remaining undefeated against the champions in four league meetings. Airbus finished 11 points clear of the thirdplaced club Carmarthen Town, securing another Europa League appearance with three league games remaining. Ian Kearney and Lewis Short were included in the league's dream team with Tom Field shortlisted for the player of the season award and director of football Andy Preece again nominated for manager of the season. In May 2014, it was announced that the pitch at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium would be converted to synthetic 3G in the close season with the assistance of grants from the FAW and the Broughton Wings Sports & Social Club. A third European appearance came 12 months later when the Wingmakers finished third in the League and faced NK Lokomotive of Croatia, losing 5-3 on aggregate but doing well to draw the away leg 2-2 in Zagreb. The club was unable to repeat its league performance in 2015/16, finishing in sixth place, but again came close to European qualification, losing 1-0 to neighbours The Nomads in the play-off final. Airbus also reached the Welsh Cup final for the first time in the club's history, losing 2-0 to TNS at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground. Youngster James Murphy was voted the Welsh Premier young player of the season at the end of the campaign, with striker Tony Gray nominated for the player of the season award. In August 2016, the club parted company with Andy Preece by mutual consent and his assistant for the previous 12 months, former player Andrew Thomas, was handed the managerial reins.
