EDITOR’S WELCOME
Good afternoon and welcome to today's live televised game against Bala Town. The last time The Nomads were on TV was on the opening day against Carmarthen Town where the goals just wouldn't seem to come. Today, we hope for a different story! Today's programme might feel a little light on content, and that is due to our printers unfortunately being on summer shutdown for a week, so this programme has actually been made before we even played Newtown (hence the lack of match report from the Newtown and Cefn Druids matches). Despite that, we have done our best to provide you with a quality programme as always with a focus on Danny Harrison joining the coaching staff, as well as Dave Rapson taking a look at the 1999/2000 season in his archive section of the programme. You can also check out a squad photo in the middle pages of today's programme. Hopefully by the time you read this, we will have picked up more points against Newtown and Druids and you'll be able to read all about that in our next programme against Aberystwyth. Enjoy the game Nik

MATCH PREVIEW
Europa qualifiers meet at Deeside Welcome back to Deeside Stadium for our second home game of the 2016/17 Dafabet Welsh Premier League Campaign. Despite this being only the fifth game of the league season, both The Nomads and Bala Town come into this game having already played 10+ games each having both ventured into Europe in late June and early July. The Nomads faired slighlty better than The Lakesiders in Europe, defeating Stabaek before bowing out to Vojvodina, while Bala were drawn against Swedish giants, AIK and were defeated 4-0 on aggregate in the first qualifying round. No doubt that both sides will be looking to achieve European football again come the end of this season, but both will be primarily looking to secure a spot in the top six ahead of the January split in the league. The last time Bala came to Deeside, they secured their European place with a Lee Hunt penalty in late April, but their previous visit to Deeside last season saw goals from Les Davies and Jay Crowther secure a 2-1 win for The Nomads. Crowther has since gone to join The Lakesiders and we welcome him back to Deeside today along with a few other ex-Nomads in the form of Mike Hayes, Conall Murtagh, Ryan Edwards, and former manager Steve O'Shaughnessy. The Nomads are next in action on Sunday 11th September with a journey to south Wales to take on newly promoted Cardiff Metropolitan University.

The Nomads vs Bala Town
HARRISON JOINS THE NOMADS FIRST TEAM COACHING STAFF The Nomads are pleased to announce that midfielder Danny Harrison has stepped into a player/coach role with the first team. Harrison joined The Nomads in January 2015 and made his debut in a 1-0 victory over Bala Town, going on to make 14 appearances for The Nomads in his debut season. It was announced in May 2015 that Harrison had signed a two year deal to keep him at the Club until the end of the 2016-17 season. Harrison is a product of the Tranmere Rovers youth system, having joined the side as a 13 year old, he made his first team debut in 2001 at home against Wigan Athletic. He went on to make 125 appearances for Tranmere before joining Rotherham United in 2007 where he made an additional 188 Football League appearances. In June 2012, it was announced that Harrison had rejoined Tranmere and the following summer he joined Chester FC. On Danny's appointment to the staff, Manager Andy Morrison said "I'm really pleased Danny, I think reflects a lot about me as well - I like his intensity, I like his desire, he does things right, he's extremely fit and he's a winner... he's a ferocious competitor and I like him and if I can just bring him on board and show him the ropes and bring him into our format, the way we do things, I think he's going to be a fantastic addition - I think he's got all the attributes to be a top coach. Harrison added "I'm really happy that Andy has asked me to come on board in a player/ coach role. I've been really impressed with the manager from the first day that he came in, so for him to ask me to be on his staff was massive for me. First and foremost, I'm a player, but I'm really looking forward to learning of the manager and the rest of the coaching staff and helping out in any way I can."

A VIEW FROM THE STAND
BY WILL CATTERALL Hello and welcome to a view from the stand, where we’re preparing for a Dafabet Welsh Premier League cracker this evening. The live cameras aren’t here by accident, with two of the league’s big hitters going at it tonight. Before the league even started, ourselves and Bala were already being talked about as the teams to challenge The New Saints. We’ve been talked up all summer thanks to our success in Europe, whilst Bala have consistently pushed the champions, securing their second-second place finish in the league here at Deeside last May. Both clubs secured Europe and endured different fates: Bala drawing the mighty AIK Stockholm, yet only succumbing to a 2-0 loss at the 50,000 capacity Friends Arena, which will host this season’s Europa League final. After a 2-0 loss at home, they bowed out with ourselves going one step further against Vojvodina in the second qualifying round. Although our campaigns differed, both teams showed the toughness and resilience that is vital for competing in this league. The last time we beat Bala was here last season in November, the goals coming from now-Lakesider Jamie Crowther and Les Davies. Our last two Bala fixtures have brought defeat, and our away record against them remains sketchy ever since we beat them in 6-3 in the most bittersweet of fixtures, qualifying for the top six but losing out over a one point deduction. We wanted the top six then, and that remains our aim today. However, a win against the Lakesiders would also have more to it than three points towards the cause, as the motivation from beating last season’s runners up will be massive. Vice-versa for Bala, who would make a huge statement with a win here today. Whatever happens, enjoy this live S4C Sgorio game which always seems to add a bit more atmosphere under the Deeside floodlights. Nomads Ultras Prediction: The Nomads 1-0 Bala Town Nomads Ultras' Player of the Week: Danny Harrison We were delighted to hear the news of Harrison joining Andy Morrison’s staff on a player-coach basis last month. Danny is massively influential whenever on the pitch for us, and his experience has helped us on the way to victory both in Wales and Europe. Recently returning from suspension last season, we’re glad to see him back and are confident he’ll have a key part in our season.

GREEN'S PIECE
BY TREVOR GREEN Good afternoon, Well the games are coming thick and fast now - it’s the fourth weekend of the new season and our fifth game already. A sense of how things look likely to pan out will be easier after we have welcomed Bala Town to Deeside for our second televised match. The cameras are here because this a big match. There are no easy games in the WPL, but some are harder than others, and both sides today will see this as a benchmark for their ambitions. A winner today will have staked an early claim for an automatic European place come June. We warmly welcome the Lakesiders - we are pleased to welcome Colin and his staff, their players, committee and supporters. We wish them a pleasant stay and safe journey home. It is a mark of their achievement that the club with the smallest population in the WPL are one of its biggest clubs, and it’s a mark of their contribution to their own community that they are going ahead with a major investment to put in place a 3G surface. It will bring enormous rewards for the whole of the community. Bala might well become the smallest town anywhere in Britain to possess facilities of that order. Well done to those who have made it possible, we know from our own experience how many obstacles they have overcome. Unfortunately, due to the Bank Holiday we have had to go to print very early and I can’t comment on the performances of the past week. However, I can comment on the cruelty of the Gods of Football. We went into preparation for our European campaign with seven recognised central defenders. With George Horan, Ian Kearney and Mike Pearson likely to fight for the two starting spots and youngsters Chris Rimmer, Chris Boyes and Ben Nash ready to press them in future years, we had an abundance. Seven became six as Paul Linwood recognised that he might struggle to start and decided to move on to Ramsbottom. (what a great servant he was, we will not forget his keeping going for 80 minutes of the play off final carrying an injury that others would have succumbed to). Six became four as teenagers Nash and Boyes went out
10
The Nomads vs Bala Town
on loan to get match experience (at Gresford and Brickfield respectively). Then before the Stabaek games four became two as Chris Rimmer suffered a severe shoulder injury that will keep him out until late Autumn. Then in the week before, Mike suffered a break in his foot and has only come back to training last week. Add to that the fact that Ian Kearney was harshly sent off at Carmarthen and two became one. So we went to Bangor with George alongside the dependable but makeshift John Disney. At 25 minutes seven became none as George was injured and despite trying to continue had to come off. Jay Owen moved in from midfield alongside Diz. Just to rub in our defensive hoodoo, he was forced off with a cut to his head just past the hour. What a testimony to our organisation that we kept a clean sheet. Next week we are off down south again. Cardiff Met are a challenging side and unlike any other in the WPL. Technically I suppose they are the league's other full time team. Their players are all sports degree students. They train full time and have the very best of facilities, they may be young and inexperienced but they will be competitive in every game. Two single goal defeats opened for them and I am sure they will be a danger and when they get their WPL bearings, and will challenge for the top six. Next here on Sunday 18th at 3pm are a new look Aberystwyth. Another good game. Thanks to our match officials, Lee Evans, Lewiss Edwards, Dan Beckett and Tom Williams - we are grateful for the time and experience they give us. Enjoy the game; Trevor

NOMADS ARCHIVE
LEAGUE OF WALES 1999/2000 BY DAVID RAPSON Comfortably assured of a place in the ‘top seven’ and thus qualification for the following year’s FAW Premier Cup, Connah’s Quay approached their final game of the 1999/2000 season, at home to Barry Town, in a relaxed manner. Nonetheless, aware of the importance of the result in terms of the League championship’s destination, Nomads were determined not to capitulate in the face of a Barry Town side eager to claim its fifth successive title. Spurred on by a crowd of 688, the biggest to congregate at the Deeside Stadium for a League of Wales fixture up to that point, Nomads took the game to the Dragons and deserved their 2-0 success thanks to a brace of goals from Stuart Rain. The result ensured that Total Network Solutions (today’s New Saints) would claim the coveted league championship for the first time. The campaign had begun on 21st August 1999 with an undeserved 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Cwmbran Town but the team quickly bounced back with victories over newcomers Flexsys Cefn Druids and then Newtown. Defeat followed at Conwy United where we led 2-1 with two minutes remaining before a brawl resulted in both Stephen Hopkins and Andy Griffiths being red-carded. In added time the home side scored twice to take all three points. The autumn months proved disappointing despite a couple of 4-1 away wins at Haverfordwest County and Rhyl. Once again Carmarthen Town emerged victors on Deeside to record Nomads’ 100th League of Wales defeat before the team lost 2-0 at Inter Cardiff, always an unlucky ground for us, and conceded home points to both Rhayader Town (0-0) and Caersws (1-1). Having already gone out of the Gilbert League Cup to Bangor City in early September an embarrassing Welsh Cup defeat followed a month later at the hands of Mid-Wales League outfit Guilsfield. On ‘one of those days’ Nomads battered the home side and missed chances galore while Guilsfield attacked sporadically. Both teams netted twice in the 90 minutes but Julian Pepper gave Nomads the lead in extratime. That lasted all of sixty seconds and the game went to penalty kicks which the ‘minnows’ won 5-4. A difficult Christmas period was looming with Connah’s Quay having to play all the top teams in succession and they made a bad start, turning in a season’s-worst performance at home to TNS who triumphed easily by four goals to two. Defeat at Llanelli and at home to Bangor City on Boxing Day, thoroughly against the run of play, sandwiched an excellent 3-3 draw away to Barry Town with Jon Kenworthy scoring twice. Connah’s Quay FC entered the new millennium in mid table but with the promise of better things to come based on some good performances in the first half of the season that were not supported by results. Nevertheless January 2000 was to prove a memorable month for the team. 12
The Nomads vs Bala Town
Following a 3-1 away win at Rhyl in the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup a 2-0 victory at Cwmbran, only the club’s second at that venue, was supported by single goal successes against Cefn Druids and Newtown during the following week to give the league position a boost prior to the visit of Conwy United on 22nd January 2000. Just a couple of days prior to that match, Conwy’s playing staff left en bloc and new manager Matt Corcoran had to find many local players in order to fulfil the fixture. To his great credit he succeeded in doing so but the players were simply not of the standard required and Nomads won 10nil. It was a hollow victory but our players did what they had to do despite ‘taking their foot off the gas’ after an hour. Centre-forward Kevin Davies scored five of the goals to equal Stuart Rain’s League of Wales record for the Nomads. It was only the second time that both of our centre-backs, Jamie Jardine and Carl Smyth, had scored in the same game – and on each occasion we won 10-0! The next three league fixtures brought only two points with both Haverfordwest County and Afan Lido sharing the spoils on Deeside but the side’s New Year resilience saw them win five of the next six games three of them away from home. Even the one defeat at home to Aberystwyth Town was by just a single goal and this was countered by a rare victory over Inter Cardiff. These results propelled the team up to seventh place in the league table just three points behind fourthplaced Carmarthen Town as we entertained Rhyl towards the end of March. Already Caernarfon Town and Conwy United were virtually assured of relegation while Barry Town held an eight points lead over TNS at the top end, although the Llansantffraid-based outfit had a couple of games in hand on the champions. Rhyl were despatched thanks to goals from Rain and Davies, the former having netted both goals in the win at Caersws a week earlier while Davies scored the winner when Llanelli came to the Deeside Stadium in early April. In between there was another ‘hard luck’ story in the 1-0 loss away to TNS. Nomads were reduced to ten men with the dismissal of Craig Hutchinson but reorganised to such an extent that they dominated the second half of the match. Typically, with Nomads in the ascendency, the home team took all three points when John Toner, always a thorn in our side, hit a speculative shot on the turn from 35 yards out that flew past Phil Collister. Of course, goals like that win championships and this one went a long way towards TNS achieving just that. Our season concluded with the afore-mentioned victory over Barry Town that assured TNS of the title but a 2-0 win at Bangor City a week earlier, in which Stuart Rain once again scored both goals, had set-up the finale. Nomads could look back on a season which saw them achieve the second-best defensive record (conceding 35 goals to Barry Town’s 34). A finishing place of 7th (for the third time in seven seasons) was acceptable but could have been much better had we taken more points off the sides finishing above us in the top six places. A return of only ten points from the three dozen available in those fixtures let us down. Kevin Davies and Stuart Rain each scored 13 league goals while midfielder Jon Kenworthy notched eight. The entire squad put in a tremendous effort led by captain Carl Smyth who, along with Kenworthy, played in every league game. Neville Powell must take great credit for the way in which his team gelled and was a deserving winner of the ‘Manager of the Month’ award for January 2000.

BALA'S RECENT HISTORY
2009-10 was Bala's first season in the Welsh Premier was a big learning curve and in any other season a finishing position of 11th amongst the 18 top clubs in Wales would have been a massive achievement. However the fly in the ointment was the decision by the Welsh Premier League committee to reduce the league to 12 clubs and therefore immediate relegation was seemingly inevitable – however it was deemed the feeder leagues promoted clubs were unable to reach the criteria to receive the Domestic Licence to achieve promotion and Bala Town took their place among the elite ‘Super 12’ for the 2010-11 season. If we thought 2009-10 was a baptism of fire it was nothing compared to 2010-11 and a poor set of early results saw us fighting to remain out of the two relegation spots for most of the season. When the league split into two after the New Year we battled gamely but by the narrowest of margins finished again in 11th place (and once again in a relegation spot) but as fate would have it one of the feeder league winners was again denied a promotion spot and therefore we proudly took our place again with renewed vigour for our third season in the top league tier in Wales. The 2011-12 season, was however much better and saw further progress with the Lakesiders finishing a record 5th place in their 3rd season in the Welsh Premier League. Town didn’t drop out of the top 6 all season and cemented 5th position deservedly. They progressed into the newly formed ‘European Playoffs’ and faced Prestatyn Town in the Semi Finals. A 2-1 home win saw Colin Caton’s men reach the final where they travelled to Llanelli AFC. 90 minutes away from Europe but narrowly missed out on a European place as Andy Legg’s men won 2-1. During this season captain Mark Jones won the 18
The Nomads vs Bala Town
Daily Post’s WPL Player of the Year award, was named in the WPL Team of the Year and scooped up the Welsh Premier League’s Player of the Year award which showed Town’s progression yet again. Another record breaking and history making season followed in 2012-13. Colin Caton took charge of this 10th season with the Lakesiders and passed the 400 match in charge milestone in February. The campaign was very mixed as Town slipped into the Playoff Conference early on and were playing catchup for the rest of the first half of the season. After the split the Lakesiders ran away with 7th place and yet again were in the Playoff spots after a 10 match unbeaten and winning run. A 1-0 win against 8th place Connah’s Quay in the Quarter Finals and then a convincing 4-2 away win against Bangor City saw Bala back in the Playoff Final for the second succession and extend their run to 12 games unbeaten. But this time the outcome was different as a John Irving 89th minute winner against Port Talbot Town secured a European place for Bala Town for the first time in their history and finish the season with a record breaking 13 unbeaten matches. The Europa League draw on the 24th June saw us drawn against FC Levadia Tallinn of Estonia. The European adventure into the unknown saw us win the first leg at home by one goal to nil before losing 3-1 away to go out on aggregate by 3 goals to 2. This is hopefully just the start to the next chapter for Bala Town Football Club and we can have further European matches in the forthcoming seasons. After our European adventure it was back to the
2013/14 league campaign but it was a sluggish start which saw the Lakesiders pick up only 7 points from the first 3 months of the season. The results in ‘theWord’ Cup were however solid and saw Bala secure a place in the final and also a progressive improvement in League form towards the Christmas/ New Year period. A loss on penalties in ‘theWord’ Cup saw attention full back on the second half of the league in the bottom six and pushing towards a playoff spot. Town reached the Welsh Cup Semi Final but lost 2-1 against TNS – however with Aberystwyth reaching the final and qualifying for Europe, hopes of the 7th placed finish were still alive. Results and goals were going in Town’s favour but slipping up towards the end of the season and Aberystwyth’s domination meant the 6 point gap saw the campaign ending in 8th spot. However after Town’s slow start they still scored the 3rd highest amount of goals and conceded the 3rd least amount of goals in the league. 2014/15 saw new faces arrive at Maes Tegid with Huw Griffiths joining the Club’s management and Town’s line-up taking on a more youthful look. The season got off to a superb start with Bala firmly placed in the top three by Christmas. A successful cup run in ‘theWord’ Cup saw them finding themselves in the final for the second successive season but sadly fall to a 3-0 defeat to TNS. By the half-season split Bala didn’t drop below 3rd position in the league as the run in to the final matches of the season approached. Going into the final match of the season, Town sat in 2nd – were 3 points ahead of Airbus in 3rd with
Bala needing a point or more against TNS. Ahead of a bumper crowd a 1-1 draw saw the Lakesiders seal 2nd spot and qualifying for the Europa League for the 2nd time in their history. After a 3-1 loss away at FC Differdange of Luxembourg, it was all to do in the second leg but goals from Conall Murtagh and Ian Sheridan saw Bala take the lead but their hopes of a second round tie were dashed due to an injury time winner by Differdange. The Club broke their highest points tally (59) in the Welsh Premier and their highest ever position (2nd). All in all, the best season ever for the Club. 2015/16 was another successful campaign for the Lakesiders. A successive second place finish in the Welsh Premier League after only losing 6 WPL fixtures all season saw them secure European qualification on the final day of the season.
