EDITOR’S WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to another home game at Deeside Stadium, however this is our last league game here until the 10th of December - no doubt our programme for the Cefn Druids game on that day will be packed with content! If you'd have told me this time last season that we would currently be sitting second in the league and unbeaten I'd have probably laughed you off, but the team have been outstanding so far, and I'm hoping we can keep it up for as long as possible. Today's programme features the usual great articles from Will Catterall, Trevor Green and Dave Rapson, while we also take a look back at our previous encounter with The Archers earlier this season. Also, rather strangely, I had to interview myself this week, so you can have a read about me towards the back of the programme in "The Last Word". Enjoy the game and come on The Nomads! Nik

MATCH PREVIEW

High flying archers come to Deeside This afternoon's game sees The Nomads host in-form Cardiff Metropolitan University in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League. The Archers are on a fine run of form having lost just one of their last five games since our 2-1 victory at Cyncoed in mid-September, with their most recent result a 5-0 victory over Cefn Druids last weekend. While Cardiff Met will be looking to continue their fine form, they will be coming up against a Nomads side who hasn't lost a competitive game since a 2-1 defeat to Serbian side, FK Vojvodina in the Europa League qualifiers in late July. Last weekend's 2-2 draw with Bangor marked the 12th game of the unbeaten run and they will be looking to make it 13 in a row today. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said "A very warm welcome to Christian, his players and all associated with Cardiff Met - since we played earlier in the season, they have had the results that their performances deserved. After beating them, I boldly stated that they would not be rooted to the bottom of the league for long and had the players and infrastructure in place to mount a top six challenge come the split. Along with TNS, they are technically full time, and this extra time together can be seen in certain areas of their play. We know we will be in for a real challenge and we need to be at the top of our game to get the result we need." Morrison continued; "Sunday's game against Bangor was a great advert fo the league - on reflection, the result could have gone wither way - we have two great chances to win it late on, but three points would have been a bonus and a point a piece was a fair result. When I look at the squad Bangor had on the day and the options available to them, and in contrast, we were bare bones withfive players out of position, so I must give credit to my players for finding a way to be competitive. Going 12 games unbeaten at the start of the season with the catastrophic injury problems we've had says everything you need to know about the courage and character of my players." Nomads stay unbeaten in Bangor draw The Nomads were held to a 2-2 draw by Bangor City on Sunday afternoon in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League. The game began and it took only eight minutes for a goal to be scored. During a Nomads attack, a John Danby free kick was headed into his own net by River Humphreys, accidentally sending it past Bangor goalkeeper Connor Roberts to score an own goal, giving The Nomads the lead in unconventional fashion. 6

The Nomads vs Cardiff Met

Despite The Nomads being ahead, the game was very even, with Bangor looking dangerous on the attack. Jordan Davies made a good run into The Nomads' area before Branco scored only for the offside flag to disallow the goal in the 23rd minute. Five minutes later however, Branco was successful in scoring when, after Jordan Davies broke free and had a low effort saved by Danby in a one-on-one situation, Branco followed up to score from around six yards out from the right of The Nomads' goal. This goal meant Deeside had seen a small piece of Welsh Premier League history as it was the first ever goal scored by a Brazilian national in the league.

With the scores level, both teams went looking to get ahead, with Nick Rushton having a bouncing shot well saved by Connor Roberts, who also stopped a good effort from Les Davies from 15 yards out. The Nomads had a late scare at the very end of the first half, when John Danby was caught off his line trying to head the ball back to one of his defenders - The Nomads acted quickly to get back and defend, with an eventual shot from Gary Roberts going over. In the second half, The Nomads chose to fight fire with fire, going on the offensive against Bangor early on. Matty Williams glanced a header wide of goal on 50 minutes, with Branco nearly getting his brace by breaking free on The Nomads' goal, before John Disney got back to make a last-second challenge before Branco unleashed a shot. John Disney was again in action, tackling Gary Roberts inside The Nomads' area, prompting penalty appeals from Bangor which were waved away by referee Mark Petch. Michael Wilde was then introduced in place of Matty Williams, and went onto send The Nomads 2-1 up in the 68th minute when he connected with a Lewis Short cross right in front of the Bangor goal to nod The Nomads in front. The Nomads looked to defend their lead but knew it would be an almighty task against a Bangor side who were for some parts of the second half the better of the sides. Bangor indeed equalised and in fashion, when Brayden Shaw sent a curling 25 yard effort past John Danby who could do little to stop the outstanding effort going in on 75 minutes. A tense closing period of the game followed, with Bangor looking the more likely side to get the winner forcing The Nomads to dig deep. The Nomads again went through a late scare in the second minute of the four added onto the end of the game, when Bangor were awarded a free kick just outside their area. Henry Jones took the kick which hit the wall, before the ball fell to substitute Jamie Reed inside the area only for the Bangor man to be found offside. This was the final action of the game, meaning the spoils were shared between Nomads and Bangor. The game was a difficult yet successful one for The Nomads who battled hard for the draw despite missing a number of influential players.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND

BY WILL CATTERALL Hello and welcome to a view from the stand where we’re in our seventh week of the home run of fixtures and what will be our last Dafabet Welsh Premier League game at Deeside for a while, and a big one against a Cardiff Met side well worthy of the top six come January. It speaks volumes that we’ve had it tough recently and are still unbeaten and second in the table. Injuries have pushed us to the brink, seen last week when we faced our toughest test yet against Bangor. It was a hard game where for the first real time we’ve looked threatened this season, but we held out for a draw, which was probably the right score in the end. Today, we go into a game promising to be another huge challenge, with Cardiff Met currently on a run of three wins from their last four games. After an initial start which saw them go without a win, they’re now well in the mix in an incredibly tight mid table. Just four points separate 11th to 4th, and while this could all change it is seems as if a scrap for the top six is again very likely. We know all about having to fight tooth and nail to qualify, but will remain intent on securing our top six spot sooner rather than later. News this week continues to consolidate our status as a European football club. We welcomed Norwegian side Fredrikstad U19s on Friday, following our visit to their home where we beat Stabaek in July. At the time of going to press, the game hasn’t been played, but whatever the score we’re confident it will be a great occasion being able to welcome a continental side to Deeside. We also set up our first European fan club, after Bulgarians Alexander, Martin, Ivan and Emil visited us against Bangor last week. Having been following us for about a year, they are now our first foreign fan club and may be coming back for more soon. We’re grateful for their support and hope more fans from Europe will follow with our name getting known around the world thanks to our UEFA Europa League successes. Nomads Ultras Prediction: The Nomads 2-1 Cardiff Met Nomads Ultras' Player of the Week: Jay Owen Joining us in the summer, Jay was immense in our European campaign and has continued to impress during the season. Despite being a natural midfielder he’s put in some tremendous shifts for us as a centre back owing to injuries, and he’ll be important for us again today.

GREEN'S PIECE

BY TREVOR GREEN Good Afternoon and a warm welcome to Cardiff Met. Hopefully this is the last Sunday match in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League to be played here at the Deeside Stadium. We went along with the idea in response to a request for solidarity from our league AGM in order to help our league campaign for fairer treatment from the big English TV companies. This, despite knowing how unpopular it would be with our players, staff and supporters. To say it got thrown back in our faces would be an understatement. We were given an appalling set of fixtures. • We were the only WPL club not to have been given a 2:30pm Saturday kick off between August and November. • We were the only WPL club to be given EIGHT consecutive home games. • We are the only WPL club not to have been given a home game at all in the Month of November. We protested and requested changes, but were refused on all occasions. However, it’s over now. After today we will play on Fridays when we can and Saturdays when we can’t. We hope we can win back the supporters we have lost and we can assure you that the next time we are asked for self-sacrifice then the answer will be no. We welcome Cardiff Met to Deeside for the first time in their current incarnation. Their predecessor club Inter Cardiff played here last in March of 2001 and we recorded a 2-0 win in their final year of football at this level. Our visitors are administrated by Simon Evans who is the son of the late Alan Evans, former Chief Executive of the Football Association of Wales (from 1982 to 1995) who was the founded League of Wales (now the Welsh Premier League) after a mighty battle against a core of resistance from people who wanted to protect their own fiefdoms and who had little interest in the national good of his idea. We all owe Alun a debt and he must be smiling down to see Cardiff Met doing well in the top class competition he hatched. We welcome Simon and his 10

committee, Christian Edwards, his staff and players and the supporters who have made the long trip north. They come having jumped into the top six with a demolition of Cefn Druids last Sunday. We won 2-1 down there in September but we had to battle. We saw enough to know they would be a good side and we are not at all surprised to meet them in a top six berth today. They have played six home games losing to us, Bala Town (0-1) and TNS (1-2) but beating Newtown (2-1) Aberystwyth (1-0) and Druids (5-0). Away, they have won at Llandudno (1-0), drawn at Druids (0-0) but lost at Airbus (0-1), Rhyl (0-1) and Bangor (1-2). Four conceded in five away games, no one having won by anything other than an odd goal indicates a tough match. What an achievement it is to be second in the league and still unbeaten. As someone said last week, we had more of the first team squad watching from the sidelines than playing on the pitch. It’s a slight exaggeration, but the injury crisis is devastating. On Sunday, we entertained a full strength and in-form Bangor City side without skipper George Horan, Mike Pearson, Ian Kearney, Wes Baynes and Callum Morris. Michael Wilde was fit enough to be on the bench alongside Chris Rimmer who is nearly match fit again after his long injury. Yet again, we found a way to compete and it took a fantastic rocket of a 30 yard shot to give Bangor a share of the points that, in truth, they deserved. We are doing brilliantly and we are very proud of our manager, staff and players. Everyone is giving their all and we might just be able to get to January and secure a top six place. If we do so, it will be a fantastic achievement by a set of lads who always give us their all. Our next league fixture after today is an away trip to TNS next Sunday. It’s a real pity we aren’t able to go there with our strongest team, but the side who take the field will still take some beating because they have shown true grit! Before then, we entertain Rhyl in the Nathaniel MG Cup Quarter Final here on Tuesday night. Kick off is at 7:45pm and it will be a good match. In the last sixteen win over Buckley, we saw some outstanding performances from Under 19 players. I am looking forward to seeing if Conor, Luke and Jake can play to the same level against Welsh Premier League opposition. We thank Tom Williams for refereeing this afternoon. He is assisted by Alex Livesey and Ellis Hughes, with John Jones as 4th official. See you all on Tuesday. Trevor

NOMADS' ARCHIVE

LEAGUE OF WALES 2005/06 BY DAVID RAPSON Neville Powell was rewarded for his twelve years of service as The Nomads’ manager with a testimonial against a strong Tranmere Rovers side during the close season. A midfield player with the club until injury on the first day of the 1996/97 campaign ended his playing career Neville consistently had his teams playing with spirit and determination. Following the start The Nomads endured to 2005/2006 plenty more of both of those qualities was needed to avoid relegation. The bare statistics show that the team’s first eleven games in the Welsh Premier League (sponsored by Vauxhall MasterFit) brought a grand total of two points from a possible 33. A goalless draw at Port Talbot Town and a point from a visit to Porthmadog (2-2) thanks to a late Craig Hutchinson equaliser were the only ‘bright spots’. The season had begun with a long trip to Haverfordwest. On the eve of the game a telephone call to the club secretary Bobby Hunter advised that the usual coach company could not provide a vehicle. A frantic few hours followed as arrangements were made for the team and backroom staff to travel by cars to the ground furthest from Deeside. Bank Holiday traffic in Carmarthen led to the kick-off having to be put back and a couple of players who should have been substitutes had to start the game instead. County won 2-0 but the second goal didn’t arrive until the 89th minute. If we thought that things could only get better after such a start then we were sadly mistaken. A 0-2 home defeat at the hands of Newtown followed and then a 2-4 loss at Caernarfon Town. One of our goals was scored by Stuart Rain, making his 300th start in the WPL, and the other from Gary Reay – his only goal for The Nomads. A late Chris Williams penalty at Welshpool Town was our only consolation in a 1-4 defeat that left us rock bottom of the league without a point. By then, TNS were way out in front and, as luck would have it, our next opponents. A battling effort saw the Nomads keep the score down to 0-2 before that first point arrived at Port Talbot in the next game. Even a goalless draw can bring hope during times of adversity and as our next two league fixtures were against Bangor City and Caersws, the teams immediately above us and in a similar predicament, that hope of improved fortunes sprang eternal. Yet we lost both games 0-1 and followed up with a similar score at home to Carmarthen Town. By now Neville Powell was searching for ‘new blood’ and several possible signings had been identified. Phil Molyneux scored his first goal for The Nomads in the 2-2 draw at Porthmadog on 12th November. At least that brought to an end our search for a league goal that had stretched to an embarrassing 519 minutes. Gary Pinch made his debut at Porthmadog as did Martin Robinson, a striker from Irish club Crusaders, at Cwmbran a week later. Just seven minutes into that game Robinson unleashed a 25-yard free-kick into 14

The Nomads vs Cardiff Met

the back of The Crows’ net and could have had a hat-trick had not Cwmbran goalkeeper Gareth Wesson kept his side in the game. It almost goes without saying that despite The Nomads’ reinvigoration, the home side took the points with a goal in each half. The afternoon of 25th November 2005 was as gloomy as the atmosphere around the stadium for a local ‘derby’ with Airbus UK yet with further new signings Gary O’Toole, Alan Morgan and Conall Murtagh in the side it was not beyond the realms of possibility that a couple of good results could reshape our season and so it was to prove. Despite playing as a central defender, Gary Pinch scored twice against Airbus either side of O’Toole’s first goal for the club just before the break to earn the most welcome of victories. A week later an early goal for Aberystwyth Town from Glyndwr Hughes was cancelled out in the 73rd minute by Phil Molyneux and our luck turned when Chris Williams netted a disputed penalty with virtually the last kick of the game at Park Avenue. NEWI Cefn Druids were defeated at the Stadium by another Martin Robinson goal which took Connah’s Quay off the bottom of the table at Druids’ expense. Then, just a week before Christmas, a trip to play Cardiff Grange Harlequins for the first time resulted in a fourth successive victory as goals from Murtagh, Rain and a Molyneux brace brought a 4-1 success. A dozen points from those four fixtures turned The Nomads’ season despite losing both Christmas fixtures against high-flying Rhyl. Lee Hunt scored the only goal of the Boxing Day clash and netted again as Rhyl turned a half-time deficit, courtesy of Ryan Crawford’s 4th minute strike, into victory when Tommy Mutton of all people scored The Lilywhites’ winner in the final quarter of an hour. Conall Murtagh earned us a point against Haverfordwest County at the start of the New Year and then scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Caernarfon Town which took us into three games against the top three sides. At Llanelli we were beaten 0-2 and then welcomed Welshpool Town to the Deeside. Having failed to score in just one game all season and with a defence that had not conceded a goal for 350 minutes, they were deservedly second in the league though a long way behind TNS. A week earlier Tommy Mutton had returned to The Nomads following a brief stay at Belle Vue and to our delight he netted both goals in a fine 2-0 success against Welshpool. We now found ourselves in a run of five games with an alternate 2-0 scoreline, a loss at TNS being followed by a win away to Bangor City thanks to an own goal and a penalty before Porthmadog’s Jason Sadler netted both his side’s goals here at the Stadium on 17th March. Two goals in three minutes earned us a 2-2 home draw with Cwmbran Town. The match programme highlighted the fact that The Nomads had used 32 players in just 24 league games and despite an upturn in playing standards, we were still too close to the lower reaches of the league table for comfort. By the start of April, Connah’s Quay had slipped back into the bottom three places following a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Port Talbot Town. Gary O’Toole was featured on the cover of the match programme for the visit of Aberystwyth Town and it was his second half goal that separated the sides. Drawn games at Newtown (1-1) and NEWI Cefn Druids (2-2) followed with our former player Darren Williams typically grabbing Druids’ equaliser, leaving us with three games to play – at home to already relegated Cardiff Grange Harlequins and second from top Llanelli and away to Carmarthen Town. We needed to beat the Harlequins but they gave us a very difficult game before it was settled right on half-time by Phil Molyneux. That result ensured that Nomads retained their cherished membership of the WPL since the competition had begun in 1992. Llanelli came north having won 15 and drawn four of their previous 20 league matches but on a memorable evening another Molyneux goal in the 36th minute gave Nomads the points and ended the most difficult of seasons at the Stadium on a high. A 1-1 draw at Carmarthen four days later saw Phil Molyneux take his goal tally to nine for the season as The Nomads climbed to a finishing position of 12th thanks to a second half of the term that produced six wins and six draws. We now had to gather ourselves for a year away from the Deeside Stadium while the pitch was relaid and looked forward to games just four miles away at Flint’s Cae-Y-Castell ground on the banks of the River Dee.

Nomads conquer Cardiff Met in away win

Corsby.

The game saw The Nomads travel to the capital for their first league meeting with newly promoted Cardiff Met, who had so far endured a tricky start to the season with four losses and one draw. The Nomads were looking to get back to winning ways after two frustrating draws to Cefn Druids and Bala Town.

The Nomads kept up their pressure and high tempo play after the goal, which made for a first half largely dominated by the away side. Ian Kearney had the chance to double The Nomads’ lead on nine minutes when he headed a corner from Woolfe just above the Met crossbar.

The Nomads’ line up omitted Michael Wilde and Lewis Short through injuries, with Sean Smith starting amongst captain Ian Kearney and John Disney. Cardiff Met started the likes of Adam Roscrow and Charlie

Controlling the game, the tempo of The Nomads’ play relaxed slightly, but not without good attacking movement from the Nathan Woolfe, Les Davies and Jay Owen. In the 23rd minute, The Nomads did manage to breakthrough again via an impressive

18

The Nomads vs Cardiff Met

The game began and The Nomads took the lead with just six minutes gone, when an aerial ball came into the Cardiff area and fell to Williams, he shot low from around 12 yards to send the ball into the bottom right corner.

25 yard effort from Les Davies. Shooting low, his shot hit the left post and bounced onto the right post, before eventually crossing the line and further consolidating The Nomads’ hold on the game. One of The Nomads' best chances to further their lead came when Nathan Woolfe got into the Cardiff Met area and fought off two defenders to shoot low towards the left corner only for Fuller to push the shot away for a corner which was subsequently cleared. Towards the end of the half, Cardiff Met showed more of their attacking play, a feature that would be repeated at the end of the game. Corsby latched onto a cross into the Nomads area, sending it above the crossbar to keep The Nomads’ clean sheet intact for the interval. The Nomads were dealt a blow at the start of the second half, when Ian Kearney went down in great discomfort with a knee injury. He was able to limp off the pitch, and was replaced by Tom Field. The next period of the game saw John Danby go unchallenged, the home side having more possession but without creating any real goalscoring opportunities. However, Met’s persistence began to pay off, seen when with 20 minutes to go Roscrow had a shot go wide from 15 yards. The Nomads then brought Nathan Woolfe off with Nick Rushton his replacement, who went onto to chase a free ball all the way into the Cardiff Met area only to be beaten to it by the keeper. Nomads’ final change saw Wes Baynes go off for Matty Owen. Inside the last five minutes of the game Nomads’ victory looked to be all but confirmed, but Cardiff Met’s Roscrow reduced the deficit for his side in the 86th minute. Roscrow got inside the Nomads and area and hit the bottom right corner of the net with a controlled low strike. Boosted by their goal, the home side were further enthused by five minutes of additional time at the end of the game. Pushing for the equaliser, Jay Owen was forced to make an interception in the area before Danby caught a cross heading towards his goal. A challenge on Danby forced the keeper to receive treatment, bringing the total amount of game time to 98 minutes. Despite this addition, The Nomads held firm to come away from Cardiff with all three points from a controlled, professional performance.

THE LAST WORD The Last Word is a new feature which speaks to one of our players or staff on various topics.

THIS WEEK: NIK MESNEY Age: 30 Birthplace: Chester Previous Clubs: Back in my playing days (10+ years ago)... Hawarden Rangers, Penyffordd, Broughton Super Saints, Airbus UK Broughton, Garden Village and even a trial for Manchester City on the way Favourite player (as a kid): Peter Schmeichel - loved his ability, stength and passion Favourite current player: Cristiano Ronaldo - he's just unbelivably talented and I was lucky to see him play at Old Trafford quite a few times including that free kick against Portsmouth Team you support: Manchester United

C

M

Y

CM

Most memorable match watched: Got to be Man Utd winning the European Cup Final in 1999, but for The Nomads it's got to be the away victory against Stabaek Best Manager: Sir Alex Ferguson Biggest moment of your life: The birth of my two boys, Jacob and Oliver Favourite artist/song: Limp Bizkit - My Way - a little bit heavier than Trevor's usual pre-match playlist! Top Film: The Matrix Biggest career influence: I guess for my career, I'd have to say Gary Dewhurst Away from The Nomads, what do you get up to? Obviously, I don't go anywhere without my camera, spending plenty of time taking photos, but most of my time is spent with my family. I've used to run six times a week and I've just started running again once a week to get back into shape and maybe enter a few competitions here and there, and maybe live up to a challenge Andy Morrison once set me against the players! 30
