EDITOR’S WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to Deeside Stadium for The Nomads first forray into the JD Welsh Cup this season, and hopefully it won't be our last. The last time we met Goytre, I would have been 12 so this game obviously doesn't come along very often! This week's programme actually features programme art and match reports from both of the games in the 1997/98 season thanks to Dave Rapson's Nomads Archive article. We also take a look back at our recent games against Rhyl, TNS and Newtown as well as an interview with Nathan Woolfe. This time last year we had just experienced our first month under Andy Morrison's watch and a year on, it has been a fantastic year for the club with many memories to stick with us all forever... who's to say that today can't be the start of a run to win our first ever Welsh Cup?! Thanks for reading and enjoy the game. Come on The Nomads! Nik

MATCH PREVIEW
Third round start for The Nomads with visit of Goytre United This afternoon sees The Nomads enter the JD Welsh Cup for the 2016/17 campaign with our third round tie with Goytre United of the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League. The side currently sit ninth in the southern league having earned 16 points from their 12 games so far in the league, and to progress to the third round of the JD Welsh Cup, they overcame Croesceiliog in the first round, having drawn 1-1 after extra time, they won 4-2 on penalties. They then progressed to a tie with Trefelin BGC where a solitary goal setup today's game. This is not the first time that The Nomads have met Goytre United in the Third Round of Wales' premier cup competition, having met in November 1997 with Goytre holding The Nomads to a 1-1 draw before bowing out following a 4-1 defeat in the replay the following Wednesday. David Rapson takes a close look at both of those games in his "Nomads' Archive" article today. The Nomads will be looking to build on last week's victory over Rhyl in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League as they bounced back from their 2-1 defeat at Newtown the week earlier. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said "We head into today's game looking to begin a good cup run. We reached the semi final last year and we're looking to better that achievement this season. We start that journey at home to an in form Goytre United who I watched last Saturday. Their 5-0 win could have been more - they have quality and experienced players and a manager who has been involved in the Welsh Premier system for many years, so we are under no illusions as to just how hard the game will be. Before the draw was made, I would have taken anyone at home. We are a formidable opponent on our own pitch and we know it will take a very good team to beat us. Enjoy the game."

Nomads bounce back in Rhyl win
The Nomads’ lineup was again affected by injuries, with Wes Baynes on the bench after picking up an injury prior to Tuesday’s bout with TNS. Tom Field and Les Davies started along with Danny Harrison who made his 50th start in the Welsh Premier League for the club.
The Nomads beat Rhyl 2-1 in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League on Friday evening. A goal from Zyaac Edwards sent the hosts ahead, before Les Davies and Tom Field ensured the vital away victory for The Nomads.
The game began and The Nomads sought to dominate, with Woolfe winning a corner in the fourth minute which was headed wide by Davies. Rhyl also sought to attack, with Danny Harrison making a good clearance to deter the likes of Alex Jones whose pace was effective for the Lilywhites throughout.
The Nomads came into the game off the back of relatively poor form, having sustained their second loss of their season the previous Saturday at Newtown before being knocked out of the Nathaniel MG Cup against The New Saints on Tuesday evening despite matching the champions for the majority of the game.

The Nomads vs Goytre United
The first goal came against the run of play, when Rhyl countered The Nomads to send Zyaac Edwards into The Nomads' area, who shot low past Danby to send his side 1-0 up in the fourteenth minute.
Boosted by their lead, Rhyl had to deal with the countless attacking attempts from The Nomads and hit them on the break, which nearly worked for the second time when Rio Ahmadi was one on one with John Danby only to try and pass the ball, wasting his chance to shoot on goal. Just as Rhyl had failed to double their lead, The Nomads levelled in opportunistic circumstances, when in the 37th minute a powerful 25 yard effort from Lewis Short deflected off Les Davies, beating 'keeper Owen Evans who thought the shot was going the opposite way. Although The Nomads had trailed for a large part of the first half, this stroke of luck meant the sides were level at the break. In the second half it was clear neither side wanted to settle for a draw, with both teams vying for top six qualification. The Nomads continued to dominate possession but were unable to get a clear chance in front of the Rhyl goal. Changes were made, with Callum Morris and Wes Baynes replacing Matty Owen and Nathan Woolfe and The Nomads took the lead just over an hour into the game on the 64 minute mark, when from a Lewis Short throw in the ball fell to Tom Field to the right of the Rhyl area where The Nomads' midfielder did not hesitate in driving the ball into the back of the net to score his first goal for the club. The Nomads then made their final substitution of the game when Ashley Ruane replaced Matty Williams. Sensing another goal in an end-to-end game, Rhyl surrounded The Nomads' area for the remainder of the game. Former Nomad Mike Sharples had a looping header saved by John Danby, before Alex Jones made a great run into the area only for Danby to make a sweeping save. Although The Nomads were forced to soak up pressure, they eventually established themselves as the game neared its conclusion. Jay Owen was unfortunate not to send The Nomads 3-1 up when Owen Evans tipped his effort against the post. After four minutes of additional time in which the likes of Davies, Short and Ruane held the ball in the Rhyl half, full time confirmed a great win and phase one double over the Lilywhites.

Deflected strike sees Nomads bow out The Nomads were knocked out of the Nathaniel MG Cup at the semi final stage by The New Saints at Deeside on Tuesday evening. A deflected goal from Scott Quigley was enough to end The Nomads’ run in the competition. The game was a replay of its original date, with heavy fog forcing an abandonment of the semi final with The Nomads and TNS locked in a 2-2 draw with 73 minutes gone a week earlier.

The Nomads vs Goytre United
After such a close encounter, both teams had a second chance at reaching the Nathaniel MG Cup Final, which Barry Town United reached earlier on in the month after a 1-0 defeat of Carmarthen. The New Saints fielded a strengthened lineup from the original tie, with captain Paul Harrison starting along with Ryan Brobbel and Scott Quigley. The Nomads meanwhile gave a start to new signing Declan Poole who joined the likes of Jay Owen and John Disney. Late changes to the team happened on both sides, when Callum Morris and Greg Draper replaced Wes Baynes and Robbie Parry respectively after the latter players were forced out with injuries.
The game began and both sides looked to create chances, with The Nomads having the first opportunity to score when a Nathan Woolfe pass to Nick Rushton was intercepted inside the Saints six yard box. The opening goal was somewhat against the run of play, when Scott Quigley ran to the edge of The Nomads' area to see his low shot go in with the help of a deflection off Callum Morris. The New Saints built on their lead to start controlling the game, meaning the first half was a largely subdued one for the crowd of 188 who took advantage of The Nomads’ free admission offer for the evening. Nathan Woolfe put a number of dangerous crosses into the TNS area, with Rushton having a header cleared in front of goal in the 27th minute before Les Davies ran tirelessly around the TNS half in search of a break for The Nomads. The second half was a livelier affair, with Les Davies missing a golden opportunity from a Nathan Woolfe corner when he hit the post from four yards out on 50 minutes. Davies sent another shot wide minutes later from 15 yards after Nathan Woolfe again made a good run into the TNS area. Despite The Nomads’ constant pressure, The New Saints stayed solid in defending their lead, prompting The Nomads to replace Callum Morris with Chris Rimmer as time began to run out on 70 minutes. The Nomads would hit the post for the second time in the game on 76 minutes, when Lewis Short saw a shot almost parallel with the goal line go off the post. In the final ten minutes, The Nomads would push even harder for the much sought after equaliser, at times having up to 10 men inside the Saints’ half. Jay Owen sent a shot towards the bottom left corner of the TNS goal which looked to be going in, but it was practically cleared off the goal line to the agony of The Nomads. Greg Draper had the chance to seal victory for TNS when he sent a 15 yard effort off the crossbar of The Nomads’ goal, but he would not come to rue this missed chance as after four minutes of additional time, his side’s victory was confirmed.

Nomads defeated by resurgent Robins The Nomads succumbed to their second loss of the season in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League against Newtown on Saturday afternoon. Two first half goals from Neil Mitchell were enough to defeat The Nomads despite a second half penalty from John Disney. The game began and both teams competed well, with Newtown having an early chance when Neil Mitchell headed just over from a deep throw in. In the seventh minute, Wes Baynes whipped a great cross into the area for Matty Williams to send a diving header just wide. 10
The Nomads vs Goytre United
It was in the 14th minute that Newtown took the lead, when a from a deft Craig Williams corner Mitchell managed to bundle the ball in as The Nomads fumbled in their attempts to clear the ball. Boosted by their lead, Newtown put The Nomads under pressure for a 10 minute period after their goal, forcing Danby to make saves and the likes of Les Davies to come back and help clear the ball. The Nomads did enjoy good spells in the first half, but without the goal they needed. Nathan Woolfe sent numerous crosses into the Newtown area, with Davies unable to send one goalwards in the 26th minute. Towards the end of the first half The Nomads were looking dangerous upfront, forcing a number of corners, but it was Newtown who scored against the run of play. In the 43rd minute, Ryan Kershaw sent a 25 yard effort towards goal which Danby
pushed out, only for Mitchell to step up and send his side 2-0 up at the interval. The Nomads were left disappointed having had good chances to equalise in the first half, and unfortunately for them missed opportunities were a main feature of their game after the break. After Chris Rimmer replaced Matty Williams at the start of the second half, Nathan Woolfe crossed into the Newtown area where Jay Owen flicked the ball towards goal only to see it travel across the goal and go wide. Nick Rushton was then apparently pushed in the Newtown area, but referee Lee Evans waved penalty appeals away. The second half was a tight affair, with The Nomads’ search for a goal becoming more frantic with Woolfe and Matty Owen having shots go wide. Newtown were ever-present in the game and dangerous on the break, seen in the 62nd minute when John Disney made a vital interception to stop a Newtown attack. The Nomads eventually got one foot back in the game, after a handball from Shane Sutton prompted Lee Evans to award The Nomads a penalty. John Disney stepped up to score in the 74th minute, meaning The Nomads had limited time to get something from the game. Almost immediately after the goal, Les Davies connected with a Wes Baynes cross, only to see his header loop agonisingly over the goal. The Nomads then made a substitution of Jay Owen for Tom Field as they entered the last ten minutes of the game still trailing 2-1. In the 85th minute, The Nomads won a corner, and despite Woolfe’s cross bouncing in the Newtown area it could not be converted with the home side clearing as they looked to hold on for a win. Four minutes of additional time were given, but Newtown did well to hold onto possession during this time to seal the victory. The result is a frustrating one for The Nomads who will rue missed chances which could have seen them come away from the fixture with a result.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND
BY WILL CATTERALL Hello and welcome to a view from the stand, where, for the first time this season, we are able to indulge ourselves in a 2:30pm kick off at Deeside. It’s only just December, but our season has already been a tough and tiring one in which the sheer spirit of Andy Morrison’s side has kept us together. Off the back of our historic Europa League campaign, the season came thick and fast, with our side going on an unbeaten run of 11 games. By our twelfth game, we were (and still are) dealing with an unprecedented injury crisis that sidelined some of our most influential players in Ian Kearney, Michael Wilde and George Horan to name just a few. With so many key players missing, we’ve scraped through games having to win ugly at times. And yet, we still stand second in the league table with just two losses on our league record. Today brings us the opportunity to refresh, and reset for what will be a tough test against our visitors today who we welcome to Deeside after the long journey here. In today’s game, we’ll be billed as the Goliath to Goytre United’s David, but make no mistake that we face a hard afternoon against a side who sit in eighth Welsh League Division One, just below Haverfordwest who were at our Welsh Premier level last season. They have lost just four league games so far this season, with days like today having the potential to mean so much for the club and its supporters just as it does for the home side. Cup success has always evaded us in some way, with Denbigh Town knocking us out the League Cup semi finals last year, and The New Saints knocking us out of both cup competitions at the semi final stage in recent months. Just under three years ago we were knocked out of the Welsh Cup at the third round, so we know how dangerous these games can be. As you may have read in this same programme, our previous cup fixture against Goytre Utd goes back to the November of 1997, where after a forced replay we eventually progressed to the Welsh Cup fourth round in a 4-1 win. I was three months old at this time, and some of the players in our side today weren’t even born. This fixture clearly doesn’t come around often, so we hope to have a good Welsh Cup day this afternoon. Nomads Ultras Prediction: The Nomads 4-0 Goytre United Nomads Ultras' Player of the Week: Sean Smith In his second spell at Deeside, Sean is ever-effective in defence for The Nomads. He has put in some excellent shifts with us this season despite the absence of his familiar teammates owing to injuries. His strength, skill and coolness on the ball is brilliant to watch and we hope to see more of that today.

GREEN'S PIECE
BY TREVOR GREEN Good Afternoon and welcome to the 2016/17 Welsh Cup. For us, it’s the first involvement, but our visitors Goytre United have already been on a bit more of an adventure than they would have liked. In round one they met third tier side Croesyceiliog and were held to a 1-1 draw after extra time. They won the penalty shoot out by four goals to two. Next came fourth tier neighbours Trefelin BGC and once again it was decided from the spot, but this time in extra time. So they have battled to get here and obviously they don’t go down quietly. They bring several players to the Stadium who know us well. Recent signing Martin Rose is a player who has hurt us on several occasions playing for Llanelli and Port Talbot. He has scored 141 goals at the top level so won’t be daunted today. Former Welsh U19 International Dylan Blain made 294 WPL appearances, so has probably spent more time here than most of us. Skipper Dale Griffiths has 75 with Haverfordwest, Llanelli and Carmarthen. Tim Hicks has played 281 and netted 97 times in our league. Seven others also have WPL notches on their belt. The combination is a side with lots of threat and bags of experience. In short highly dangerous opposition and a real cup tie proposition. They are certainly better placed than when we last met in the Welsh Cup nineteen years ago, they drew 1-1 at the old Halfway ground before we won 4-1 down there in a replay. On Sunday, John Gray and I attended the annual chairman’s meeting at Newtown FC. The bad news is that ours and Rhyl’s proposal for the return to a 16 team league was not supported. However, the idea for change was. In a positive development the WPL is to set up a working group to look at ideas to bring more sparkle into the competition. We discussed many subjects and amongst the good news was the possibility of major grants to develop stadiums even further. We looked at ways of ensuring full national participation and that means tackling the lethargy that had infected South Wales. With fourteen clubs ready to step up from the North we need to see more with ambition in the South. 14
The Nomads vs Goytre United
To spur things on the FAW have announced a one-off £50,000 infrastructure grant for each promoted club in its first year. There will also be a £10,000 grant to develop the administrations, assist with travel and start an Academy .All to bring up clubs to WPL standard. Licensing is to be relaxed so that clubs don’t have to finish work on March 31st to get a license, but they do need to show plans and contracts that commit them to the work. So come on Goytre United, make today the second of many visits and let’s not wait two decades to see you again. Funny game this football! We played well at Newtown and lost. We played very well against TNS in the League Cup semi- and lost. We were disjointed, off the ace and put in possibly our only bad display so far at Rhyl last Friday night – and won. Brian Clough once said that sides who play badly and win become champions. Well let’s hope he was right. However, our winning goal was very, very good. A great flick over from Callum and what anticipation from Tom to get in and finish so well. A win is a win is a win! The three points took us to 33 from 17 games. No one has ever failed to get top six at the split with 31 or more from 22. It’s not certain until it’s certain but it looks very good. Considering we still have seven first teamers out injured and have had since September its one hell of an achievement. Well done players, support staff and management. Our next game will probably be on Saturday 17th December when we entertain TNS in the weekends live game with a 5-15 Kick off. The Druids game due for next Saturday is off because of Futsal International call ups in the Druids squad. That one will probably be deferred to January although there is a chance it might be on Tuesday 13th December. Please see the social media and website for News. We thank Tom Williams for officiating, Phil Roszkowski and Ellis Hughes for assisting, and John Spender for being 4th official. We look forward to seeing you soon. Trevor

NOMADS' ARCHIVE PREVIOUS CLASHES WITH GOYTRE UNITED BY DAVID RAPSON Welsh Cup Third Round – Saturday 22nd November 1997 Connah’s Quay Nomads 1, Goytre United 1 Memories of previous cup clashes with Goytre United are rekindled this afternoon almost two decades since our two clubs last met. Nomads went into that match on the back of six games without a win. Indeed, the team’s previous success had been a 4-1 victory over Porthmadog in the second round of the Welsh Cup in midOctober. Goytre United stood midway in the top division of the Welsh League at the time but had already taken the Welsh Cup by storm defeating Caerleon (away) 7-2 before trouncing Chepstow Town 6-1 in the second round. It was clear our visitors were not to be taken lightly! The match report in a subsequent programme read as follows: “Nomads were left facing a difficult midweek replay in Port Talbot after the Welsh League side held on for a 1-1 draw in the Welsh Cup 3rd Round tie. On a heavy pitch, Nomads were guilty of trying to play too much stylish football and paid the penalty. Steve Futcher scored Nomads’ goal three minutes before half-time, turning on a pass from Andy Thomas before cracking an unstoppable shot past Matthew Norris. Within eleven minutes of the restart, however, Goytre were level, Hugh Davies cutting inside Smyth and burying is shot in the net. The visitors carved out other openings although Nomads had their chances too. The game’s most controversial incident occurred in the second period when referee Parry turned down penalty appeals after Goytre’s Robert Williams clearly handled the ball in the ‘box. Neville Powell threw on Stuart Rain and Neil Davies in a bid to grab a winning goal and avoid that replay but to no avail.” Nomads: Phil Collister, Andy Thomas, Mike Carroll, Paul Jones (Neil Davies), Steve Futcher, Carl Smyth (Vernon Keep), Craig Hutchinson (Stuart Rain), Darren Wynne, Jamie Hughes, Jon Kenworthy, Chris Davies. Goytre United: Matthew Norris, Darren Beynon, Andrew Webber, Jeremy Chandler, Andrew Roach, Paul Bromage, Mike Parfitt, Robert Williams, Hugh Davies, Paul Wiseman, Andy Pitman. Substitutes: Paul Underwood, Stuart Morgan, Martin Gleave.

The Nomads vs Goytre United
Welsh Cup Third Round Replay – Wednesday 26th November 1997 Goytre United 1, Connah’s Quay Nomads 4 The Nomads team along with a bunch of enthusiastic supporters climbed aboard the coach early on a grey November morning for the midweek replay at Glenhafod Park, Port Talbot. On a level, though wet, playing surface Nomads did the job they felt they ought to have done on the previous Saturday but it took a while to overcome the hard-working Goytre United outfit. Everyone in the Connah’s Quay side played his part although midfielders Craig Hutchinson, Darren Wynne and especially Jon Kenworthy were the key to the success. If anything the margin of victory might have been greater such was Nomads’ second-half superiority. Nevertheless, a first-half of spurned opportunities for the visitors ended with Goytre United 1-nil to the good despite ending the half with only ten men, Robert Williams slotting a 34th minute penalty kick past Phil Collister. That goal apart the home team had given Nomads little trouble whilst the Quay carved out and then scorned several goalscoring chances. That was soon forgotten once Jamie Hughes had clinically converted a 55th minute penalty awarded for a clear handball. With Kenworthy running the show Nomads gained in strength and it was all that Goytre could do to keep the score to reasonable proportions. With 20 minutes remaining Kenworthy and Hughes set up Steve Futcher for a superb strike from the edge of the penalty area and nine minutes later Jon Kenworthy netted his first goal for the club from close range. The scoring was completed in the 83rd minute when Matthew Norris palmed a Neil Davies effort in the path of Jamie Hughes who comfortably bagged his 14th goal of the season. Nomads: Phil Collister, Andy Thomas, Paul Jones, Craig Hutchinson, Jamie Jardine, Carl Smyth, Steve Futcher, Neil Davies, Jamie Hughes, Jon Kenworthy, Darren Wynne. Substitutes (not used): Garry Wynne, Mike Cody, Vernon Keep. Nomads’ reward for the replay success was a ‘home’ game with another Welsh League side Llanwern. By the time that match was played we had left the old Halfway Ground for good and ground-shared with Rhyl at Belle Vue whilst the building of the Deeside Stadium was completed. Llanwern were defeated 4-0 and then Cwmbran Town 3-2 taking us to a semi-final tie with Barry Town at Newtown’s Latham Park. Stuart Rain and Steve Futcher scored to send us into the Welsh Cup final with a 2-1 win over the Dragons and a meeting with Bangor City at The Racecourse, Wrexham. There is a touch of irony in a sentence printed in the programme for the Goytre United game at the Halfway Ground. I wrote with anticipated foresight “Working on the pretext that Barry Town could win the domestic ‘double’ as they did last year, then the side defeated by Barry in the Welsh Cup Final would enter the European Cup Winners’ Cup – as did Cwmbran Town this past summer.” Barry Town did NOT win the Welsh Cup because we beat them in the semi-final. Nomads still ended as losers in the final (beaten 4-2 on penalties after Bangor’s last minute goal in normal time had earned them an additional 30 minutes) so gained nothing from the ruling of the time that beaten finalists enter Europe if the winners had already qualified through another competition. Now that we have tasted European football this past summer with a certain amount of success so the disappointment of that Welsh Cup final on 10th May 1998 is well and truly behind us. We took nothing for granted when opposing Goytre United in November 1997 and we shall do exactly the same this afternoon. One needs only to look at the calibre of the strike force available in our opponents’ ranks to see they will be more than a handful and Nomads’ followers would do well to note the name of Tim Hicks who once scored five goals against us in one game for Carmarthen Town! The Nomads vs Goytre United

GOYTRE UNITED'S HISTORY
In the spring of 1963 a new era began for the footballing village of Goytre. A tin box holding what funds the club had was handed to new football secretary Boris Suhanski. Boris was a 37 year old football lover and was keen to re-establish Goytre as a football village. Together with fellow founder members John H Tobin and David G Evans the journey began. Utilising these funds, Goytre United Football Club was reborn. Times were hard for the village football club during the sixties and early seventies but patience and commitment from a hard working committee started to pay dividends. The club were members of the Port Talbot and District Football League but were promoted to the South Wales Amateur League in the late sixties. After a successful opening spell, things became more difficult and the club was eventually relegated back into the Port Talbot League in the late seventies. This was a set back to all concerned at the club, but the club had to take stock and a re-building process took place. Part of that re-building process took place in 1982 when the Goytre United AFC Social Club opened its doors. The Social Club went from strength to strength with hard working committee acting as staff on a voluntary basis to serve the community and is still being run in this way today.

The Nomads vs Goytre United
Countless hours are being spent behind the bar serving, with all funds being made to help the cause of our village football team. Also, without the continuous support of club members and locals the efforts would have been wasted. Various fund raising schemes were setup such as raffles and totes which have all contributed to the cause. A period of ten years passed when Goytre United competed in the Port Talbot and District League. During this time, the club grew in stature on and off the field and in 1988 was re-elected back into the South Wales Amateur League. In the 1989/90 season the Club secured promotion into the First Division of the South Wales Amateur League. Also in this year, a 350 all-seating grandstand was built which is a proud result of all the hard work and commitment over the years. Now called the Boris Suhanski Stand it is a great tribute to the man himself. History was made in the 1990/91 season when Goytre were promoted into the Welsh Football League and on the 24th August 1991 they played their first match against Milford United. Since their elevation into the Welsh League, steady improvements have been made both on and off the pitch and 2000 they erected floodlighting. The ground at Glenhafod Park
Stadium is now the envy of most locally and is a symbol of what may be achieved when people pull together. In the 2003/2004 season, the club ended the season in the runners up spot in division one and just missed out on promotion to the Welsh Premier League behind eventual champions Llanelli. In the 2004/2005 season they won the prestigious League Challenge Cup sponsored by Shamrock Travel for the first time at Ton Pentre.
Championship for a third time. Once the 2011 season drew to an end, further investment was made and their floodlighting was upgraded to 500 lux which brings them up to Welsh Premier League standard.
