EDITOR’S WELCOME Good evening and welcome to Deeside Stadium for another home game in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League - get settled in as we'll be here a lot in the coming weeks! It was another great win over Aber last weekend which gave us a small buffer above Bangor to keep hold of second place, and I would like to think we can secure that position even further today. This week's programme takes a look at the Irn Bru Challenge Cup, our 2001-02 season as well as the usual look at our opposition. We now have photos in place for all of our first team, so the pen pics page looks the best it ever has done and it's something I'm really proud of. I'm looking forward to the next few games and feel that we can really cement our place in the Top Six for the second phase of the season, and if we keep playing the way we have been, I am sure we will be there come January. Come on The Nomads! Nik

MATCH PREVIEW

Europa qualifiers clash at Deeside Welcome to Deeside Stadium for tonight's Dafabet Welsh Premier League clash between two of the three sides who qualified for the UEFA Europa League Qualfiying Rounds. Despite this being the first time the sides have met competitively this season, The Nomads' pre-season campaign started with a 2-1 victory over Llandudno in June ahead of our four Europa League games. While The Nomads progressed through to the second round, Llandudno were beaten comprehensivly by Swedish giants, and former UEFA Cup winners, IFK Goteborg. Since those results, fortunes have taken a similar path for both sides with The Nomads currently sitting in second position in the league having not lost a game thus far in the campaign. Llandudno meanwhile have stuttered somewhat in their start to the season, picking up just two victories from their seven leagues games so far, and losing out to bottomplaced Cardiff Met this past Saturday. The Nomads go into the game with an extensive injury list including Ian Kearney, Callum Morris, George Horan and Mike Pearson among others, but will also come into the game full of confidence having won their past two games, scoring six in the process. Ahead of the game, Andy Morrison said "A very warm welome to Alan Morgan and his staff and all associated with Llandudno. In last year's encounters, every game was close and I'm sure that this evening will be no different. Having experienced European football like us, they will want a taste again and with the wonderful football they play I have no doubt that come the end of the season, they will be right up there challenging for a European place. It's always nice to go into a game in good form and although we still have injury problems, the lads have done great recently - fingers crossed that by the start of October we should have a few of them back. I'm only too aware that you can't keep playing players out of position and missing a recognised centre back is only something you can get away with for so long. Sadly we have lost Ian Kearney for the season after his terrible injury at Cardiff - he's been fantastic for us both in Europe and domestically, but if any player can deal with such a serious injury twice in such a short time it's Ian - he will get the full support of the Club and we all look forward to him being back for pre-season next year" The Nomads vs Llandudno

Dafabet Welsh Premier League | Sunday 18th September 2016 Deeside Stadium, Connah's Quay | Attendance: 145

Nomads hit Aber for four at Deeside The Nomads overcame Aberystwyth Town by four goals to nil on Sunday afternoon in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League. Matty Williams opened the scoring for The Nomads, with a second half brace from Les Davies and goal from Shelton Payne securing the home win. The fixture was significant for The Nomads, with a number of rival teams having already dropped points that weekend. The Nomads went into the game challenged by a big injury list which saw the likes of Ian Kearney, George Horan and Lewis Short all missing from the lineup.

6

The Nomads vs Llandudno

Andy Morrison was therefore forced to start a makeshift back four, with John Disney and Jay Owen acting as centre half’s with Wes Baynes and Sean Smith the right and left wing backs. Aberystwyth meanwhile were able to announce a strong line up including Geoff Kellaway and Kostya Georgievsky. When play got underway, The Nomads immediately looked to take control and had most of the possession in the opening stages. Nathan Woolfe was, as ever, dangerous on the wing, crossing the ball in to the likes of Davies and Rushton who attacked early on without causing major concern to goalkeeper Dominic Richards. This deadlock was broken in the 20th minute, when Matty Williams sent The Nomads 1-0 up. From a Tom Field cross, Williams’ shot took a deflection to

loop over Richards and just about cross the line to give The Nomads a deserved lead. With their goal, The Nomads increased their control of the game, making for a largely comfortable half. Les Davies put Richards under pressure when he blocked the goalkeeper's kick, sending the ball back towards the Aber goal in the air only for Richards to push the ball out for a corner in a near second goal for The Nomads. One of The Nomads’ best chances of the first half saw Nathan Woolfe have a diving header go wide despite a good connection with a Tom Field cross. It was then Woolfe’s turn to try and assist with his cross being sent against the bar by a good headed effort from John Disney. In the second half The Nomads set out to protect their lead, achieving their much sought after two-goal lead on 47 minutes. An excellent cross from Tom Field, who had a superb game as The Nomads’ captain, went straight to the head of Les Davies who scored from six yards out in the 47th minute. Les Davies continued his good form with a great run into the Aberystwyth area, his pass to Nick Rushton being intercepted at the last minute to deny The Nomads' striker an effort yards from the goal. Although The Nomads were dominating the game, Aberystwyth nearly caught them out when Luke Borrelli got in a great position inside The Nomads' area only to shoot wide for the Seasiders. Minutes later Chris Jones also sent an effort towards The Nomads' goal, but his effort went wide to keep The Nomads' clean sheet intact. Nathan Woolfe’s game ended with just over an hour played, the winger substituted for Shelton Payne. Payne then opened his Nomads account in style on 67 minutes, when he cut in from the right wing to curl an effort into the top left corner of Aberystwyth’s goal via the post to give The Nomads a 3-0 lead. This goal all but confirmed The Nomads’ win, who then replaced goalscorer Matty Williams with Matty Owen. With 15 minutes to go, Tom Field was denied a goal to top off his performance, when his shot from 20 yards was accidentally blocked by Nick Rushton. Field would again be in action in the 89th minute when he assisted Les Davies for the second time, sending an aerial ball to Davies who got his brace with an impressive header from eight yards out. After around three minutes of injury time, Kevin Parry confirmed full time and a comprehensive Nomads win in what was their first of six consecutive home games in the league.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND

BY WILL CATTERALL Just two days after our last game, here we are again for another Welsh Premier fixture at Deeside. Although the turnaround will be tight, Deeside under the floodlights always puts an extra edge on the atmosphere, which we hope you’ll enjoy tonight. Sunday’s win was exactly what we needed to kick off our run of home fixtures through September and October. Even with a makeshift defence, we were solid and for one of the first times this season more clinical upfront scoring four goals in our biggest win of the season so far. We’re under no illusions that tonight will be more difficult. Whilst Llandudno haven’t the start they will have hoped for, they sit a steady seventh in the table and remain the tough to break down and dangerous side they were last year. We’re united with Llandudno in the fact that our seasons started in June, both playing in the Europa League over the summer. The impact of this has been felt in different ways, with our squad already hit with a number of injuries, whilst Llandudno have only picked up two wins from seven games so far. Both us will see a victory as a big deal tonight. Although we’re still in September, make no mistake that every win will be vital in clinching a top six finish, as we certainly don’t want to wait until the final day like last season. Llandudno come into tonight’s game on the back of a loss against Cardiff Met, who we know are dangerous after our trip down to the capital two weeks ago. They were always going to get off the mark eventually, and unluckily for our visitors it was at their expense. Their recent loss isn’t good news for us, as they’ll be fighting to turn things around by becoming the first team to beat us this season. Last season saw the birth of a rivalry with Llandudno, who beat us 1-0 at home and 3-2 at Deeside, with ourselves taking wins in the other two fixtures. In the end, they won the battle for third but thankfully we joined them in Europe winning the play-offs. Both of us have the same European aim for this season, and this should be reflected in tonight’s match up. Mid week games can often prove tricky for everyone involved, so thanks for your attendance tonight. If you like what you see, come down for our match against Rhyl on Sunday in what should be fierce game. Nomads Ultras Prediction: The Nomads 2-1 Llandudno Nomads Ultras' Player of the Week: Les Davies After initially struggling to get the goals in, Les is now well and truly off the mark with three goals from our last two games and plenty of involvement in our gameplay to top that off. A household name in Welsh football, he has been a regular for us since his marquee transfer to us in summer 2015. We hope to see some more quality from Les tonight! 8

GREEN'S PIECE

BY TREVOR GREEN Welcome to Llandudno FC. What a great first season the club had in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League - to get third place and hold off our late season charge to get automatic qualification for Europa League football was outstanding. Unfortunately, they were unlucky in the draw and a pairing with IFK Gothenborg was unlikely to be successful for any unseeded team. Gothenborg are, of course, double UEFA Cup Winners beating SV Hamburg and the Dundee United in 20th Century finals. We welcome their officials, supporters and Alan Morgan and his playing staff. They have had a difficult start to the new season - they gave themselves a lot to live up to, and have made themselves a team others want to beat. So far (as with ourselves) scoring goals has been the issue. Winning away at Carmarthen and at home to Airbus have given them three goals netted so far. None were scored in the draws with Rhyl and Newtown or in the defeats to TNS and Aberystwyth. Llandudno have good management and good players they will be alongside Bala and Newtown as our main rivals come springtime. I have no doubt that they will fight us all the way in the battle for second place this season and although it's only September, make no doubt, this is a six pointer. I am writing before Saturday’s game, so I hope we kept the unbeaten start going and I really hope we came through without further injury. Last year our previous manager believed a squad of sixteen was sufficient for a WPL campaign and that having more senior players led to discontent. If we had adopted that approach this year then with seven out already we would have been hard put to turn out a competitive side at all. Hopefully one or two might rejoin the fray soon, but it’s been an unprecedented start injury wise and is probably connected to the superhuman effort that went into our Europa League campaign. The Dafabet Welsh Premier League is a very good league now. It's results in Europe are massively improved - no more 10-0 defeats and the occasional win too. Pre–season games see us usually beat teams from Conference North and below - players who don’t make it

10

The Nomads vs Llandudno

in the WPL do well in the English Pyramid below conference level, and players from that level coming to the WPL often take time to get up to match standard here. There is current interest in all this from UEFA , English, Northern Irish and Scottish FA’s due to the need to assess the level the WPL achieves as set against their own competitions. This is to ascertain levels of future UEFA infrastructure grant awards. A lot of eyes across Europe will be watching Crusaders, Linfield, TNS and Bala’s performances in the new Irn Bru Challenge Cup to help decide these questions. TNS were lucky in the draw. Forfar may top Scottish Division Two but are a conventional team playing on a 3G surface, and are just the sort of team the Oswestry club like to meet in European competition. They stand a better than even chance of progress. Bala were not so fortunate. Alloa are top of Scottish League One and are a brash, confident, young full-pro team who play like the clubs nickname - Wasps. This will be one of the most interesting games played on Welsh soil this year and as it’s the break weekend we have no fixture. I intend to be there at 1pm on Saturday October 8th to watch it. You could do worse than join me. Make no doubt Bala are big underdogs in this tie. We are back here for another of the season's big games next Sunday, Rhyl have banked on youth to see them through what is expected to be a difficult campaign. It looked as though it would all go horribly wrong when they were slaughtered 10-0 at TNS, but in one of the most impressive rehabilitations in WPL history they recovered to win the next three in a row. It's impressive, and Niall McGuiness must take a load of credit - to go 1-0 down early in the next game but be able to pick up that group of players and win was outstanding. They will be worth watching in what should be a very good game. Today’s refereeing team are Mark Petch, Alex Livesey, Aaron Wyn Jones and Ellis Hughes. We are grateful for their support; it’s a cliché, but true nonetheless. Without them we would have no football. Enjoy the game, Trevor

NOMADS' ARCHIVE

LEAGUE OF WALES 2001/02 BY DAVID RAPSON Returning to the League of Wales as champions of the Cymru Alliance, Caernarfon Town provided Nomads with their opening game of the new season on a balmy Friday evening. The Canaries had scored over 100 goals in their championship season and were eager to banish the memories of a disastrous campaign at this higher level two years earlier. With former Nomads Darren Wynne and Danny McGoona in their squad they proved to be stern opposition winning 2-1. That was not the start we had envisaged but a 2-0 success away to Port Talbot Town a week later, with goals from Paul Mazzarella and Jon Kenworthy, brought back the smiles. In the League Cup competition Connah’s Quay had been paired with Flexsys Cefn Druids and Oswestry Town in a mini-league format but the league fixtures also pitted Nomads against the same teams around the same time. This had the effect of us opposing one or the other for six of the next seven games! The cup performances were moderate but in the league Connah’s Quay were unstoppable winning five games on the bounce. Following the win at Port Talbot, Nomads defeated Cefn Druids (2-1), Oswestry Town (5-1), Caersws (2-1) and Cwmbran Town (4-2) so that by the end of October the team stood second in the league just a point behind unbeaten Bangor City and seven ahead of the reigning champions Barry Town. Drawn games followed at Carmarthen Town and at home against Haverfordwest County, but after winning 2-0 at Afan Lido we went into the ‘top of the table’ battle with Bangor City on 10th November 2001 full of confidence. By now Nomads led the league three points clear of Rhyl in second place, Bangor having slipped to fourth after losing at Aberystwyth. Nine previous LoW games against Bangor City on Deeside had produced a solitary home win, in March 1994, but Nomads were up for this one. It was a hugely entertaining match in front of a crowd of 429. With the home side leading 2-1, Bangor were awarded a penalty but Jason Turner saved Marc Lloyd-Williams’ spot-kick and Nomads went up the other end to increase their lead before going on to win 4-2 and then boosting title hopes with a 4-0 victory over Rhayader Town that sent us five points clear at the top of the league. Needless to say, TNS (Total Network Solutions to give them their full title and today’s New Saints) were hard on our heels but that five point cushion was comforting. Just as well for, had we known, a crazy few weeks were about to develop. Our next game was away to TNS and as confident as the players were it mattered little. The Mid-Walians thumped five goals past Turner with a solitary reply from Stuart Rain to follow his third ‘hat-trick’ of the campaign against Rhayader three nights earlier. 12

The Nomads vs Llandudno

A disappointing 2-2 home draw with Newtown followed ahead of a trip to Barry Town. George Horan, sent off at TNS, would miss the Barry game and with both Paul Whitfield and Jason Turner unavailable, Neville Powell had to scout around for a new goalkeeper. Barry Town had quietly slipped into fourth place in the league by the beginning of December, six points behind the Nomads who were now a point behind TNS. After the Barry Town game we faced lowly Llanelli at home then a trip to Rhyl. In previous cup games we had proved to be a thorn in Barry Town’s side but league results had rarely gone our way. Not this time though for Lloyd Roberts’ 25th-minute strike from an acute angle was enough to give us all three points, helped by the home team’s goalkeeper being sent off at half-time for fighting with one of his own teammates! That victory took us top of the league once again and with a visit from Llanelli to follow on the Saturday before Christmas. The Reds were next to bottom having scored just eight goals in 13 games, only three of them away from home. The match programme notes stated “No doubt Neville Powell has instilled in his players’ minds the fact that Llanelli are now a better side than their lowly league position would indicate.” Nomads dominated much of the first-half but conceded a breakaway goal to Mark Dickeson. With 30 minutes remaining we continued to attack but could not find a way through. Then, in a ‘mad half-hour’ Llanelli scored five more goals! It was as if the match ball was inextricably drawn towards (and past) Andy Mulliner making his home debut between the posts. Afterwards, nobody could explain how it came about, least of all the Llanelli players. Boxing Day was spent at Rhyl and the horrors of the previous game were quickly put to bed with Nomads hammering the Lilywhites 4-0. It was only Rhyl’s second home defeat of the season and was orchestrated by Rain and Kenworthy as the Quay scored three times in a spell of just 12 minutes. Previous seasons had seen the club’s fortunes improve as the campaign drew towards its close. In the Welsh Cup we had beaten Penrhyncoch and Newtown to earn a fourth round tie away to Carmarthen Town in February 2002 but the winter weather had set in causing postponements. Between Christmas and early February Nomads played only two league games, losing at Caernarfon and sharing the points in a goalless draw with Port Talbot in which we squandered many opportunities to score. Defeat in the Welsh Cup at Carmarthen was followed by a similar loss (2-1) at the hands of Aberystwyth Town so that Nomads’ season had turned in a way nobody had thought possible three months earlier. When Carmarthen played out a draw (0-0) on Deeside in mid-February we found ourselves down to 7th in the league ten points behind a resurgent Barry Town and five behind Rhyl – the team we had comprehensively beaten at Christmas. A mini-revival followed with successive wins away to Haverfordwest County (3-0) and at home to Afan Lido (2-0) but they only ‘papered over the cracks’ despite those six points pushing the team back into contention with games in hand – five of them on Rhyl who remained in second place but only five points ahead of Connah’s Quay. It was a strange situation. The team had done very well for five months before confidence seemed to drain as things went against them. Following those two victories the rot set in and the remaining dozen league games produced only two successes, both by 2-1 and both at home against Flexsys Cefn Druids and Rhyl. Away form disappeared altogether with seven matches producing two points from draws against two of the bottom four sides, the season ending with a 1-1 scoreline at relegated Rhayader Town. Nomads finished a respectable 8th in the table and that despite taking only 18 points from 17 games in the second half of the campaign. A ‘top four’ finish seemed as far away as it had ever been.

ABERYSTWYTH TOWN The Nomads vs Llandudno

LLANDUDNO'S HISTORY

Football in Llandudno dates back to 1878 when a club, probably known as Gloddaeth Rovers was in existence probably for around a decade. The club was formed for the purpose of providing activity for cricketers during their close season. SA full international Wales v Ireland was played on the "council field" in 1898. Llandudno were founder members of the Welsh National League (North) in 1921 and were champions in 1923 and League Cup winners in 1930. The club won the N.W.C.F.A.in 1926 and the North Wales Amateur cup in 1929.Controversy struck the club in 1931 when the F.A.W. instructed them to play in East Wales, which Llandudno refused and were suspended. Llandudno were founder members of the Welsh League (North) in 1935 and remained in the league until war broke out in 1939 and the rejoined in 1945 and stayed till 1974. Llandudno were League champions in 1936 and repeated the feat the following season, in addition the club regained the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1948 and 1962, the Alves Cup in 1951 and the Cookson Cup in 1965. The club moved to its current home at Maesdu Park in 1991 after the "council field" was used for the construction of the ASDA store in the late 1970's, now the new Parc Llandudno. The current ground was officially opened in 1991 and floodlights were added in 1994.The following season saw the erection of a clubhouse and two small stands which provide seating (covered) for 130 spectators. The club has in the past few seasons gone under major transitions, with the addition of a new press box, built by a local lad who died while construction 18

The Nomads vs Llandudno

was ongoing and it is surely a testament to Cyril "Ciz" Williams that such a great number of friend’s were determined to finish his work and the building stands as a fitting memorial to this wonderful man. In season 2004/05 new dressing rooms were completed and they have proved to be the envy of all who have used them. New grandstands, with disabled access, are in place and the stadium now meeting the criteria set down for Welsh Premier football. The new project of putting seating from one end of the back goal to the other is now under way and when complete our ground will boast a seating capacity of 1013.
