EDITOR’S WELCOME Good evening and welcome to the semi final of the Nathaniel MG Cup between The Nomads and TNS. Recent matches between The Nomads and The Saints at Deeside Stadium have been enthralling encounters with The Nomads coming out on top twice last season, and I'de love to make it three in a row tonight and secure our place in the final agains Barry Town United. This week's programme only just got here due to laptop issues on my part - up until almost midnight on Sunday after the Llandudno match to ensure that the programme arrived on time for tonight! Dave Rapson has done an especially good look at our past fixtures with TNS in the League Cup in today's programme while Trevor Green looks at the current league setup and potential for change. Barry Town United await the winners Tonight's game sees first meet second from the Dafabet Welsh Premier League as they both search for a place in the Nathaniel MG Cup Final. The New Saints are the only side to defeat The Nomads domestically this season, so no doubt Andy Morrison's men will be looking for a measure of revenge this evening for last month's 3-0 defeat at Park Hall. The game at The Venue saw The Nomads hold out until the 68th minute, but when the goal came, it signalled two further goals for the champions and ended The Nomads' unbeaten record in the league. The Nomads have bounced back well since that defeat recording a 3-1 victory at Aberystwyth and a 2-0 win at Llandudno, while TNS have defeated Bangor City in the league and Livingston in the IRN Bru cup. The last time that The Saints visited Deeside in March saw them leave empty handed as goals from Callum Morris and Les Davies saw The Nomads come from behind to defeat the Oswestry based side. Earlier in 2016, both Morris and Davies were on the scoresheet again as The Nomads defeated The New Saints 2-0 to secure their place in the Top Six of the 2015/16 season. The winners of tonight's game will face Barry Town United in the final following their 1-0 victory over Carmarthen Town last week in the other semi final. Their game was played ahead of schedule due to Carmarthen surrendering home advantage in order to bring the game forwards.

Nomads secure away victory at Llandudno The Nomads recorded their second consecutive away victory with a win at Llandudno on Sunday afternoon. First half goals from Nick Rushton and Nathan Woolfe were enough to give The Nomads all three points at Llandudno’s Giant Hospitality stadium. The game began and was largely even for the opening ten minutes, with The Nomads getting up the pitch to try and establish themselves in the game. This was achieved in no less than ten minutes, when Nick Rushton sent The Nomads ahead with a shot just yards from the Llandudno goal. 6

In a busy area, the ball fell to Rushton who got to the ball before Llandudno 'keeper Robers, sending the ball into the net under the onrushing goalkeeper. With their 1-0 lead The Nomads continued to attack, with Jay Owen and Nick Rushton going close in what was a great opening 20 minutes for Andy Morrison’s side. Despite The Nomads’ strong start, Llandudno remained in the game, with John Owen enjoying a good individual performance for his team. In the 20th minute he sent a shot towards the bottom left corner of Nomads’ net from seven yards, but Wes Baynes was on hand to block the effort. The Nomads made it 2-0 in the 26th minute, when they were awarded a free kick just outside the Llandudno area after a handball. Nathan Woolfe stepped up to score a perfect free kick, his strike going over the wall and into the top corner. In the 32nd minute, The Nomads had a chance to further

their lead, when Les Davies challenged goalkeeper Roberts in the air with the ball to falling to Matty Williams, whose strike bounced off an unaware Roberts to deny Nomads a third goal. As half time neared, Llandudno had more possession in The Nomads’ half, leading to a chance for Buckley who missed an opportunity to shoot in a good position inside The Nomads' area, with the offside flag also going up to rule out the chance. Leo Riley had two free kicks saved by Danby in the 42nd and 45th minute, with the latter save injuring Danby and ruling out any actual action for the one minute of additional time given at the end of the half. Thankfully Danby recovered to complete the full 90 minutes. In the second half, Llandudno played more of their game in The Nomads’ half, but were prevented from having any major goalscoring opportunities. John Owen made a good run into The Nomads' area in the 50th minute, forcing The Nomads to concede a throw in which came to nothing. Nathan Woolfe looked to get on the scoresheet for the second time, having a 15 yard effort saved by Dave Roberts in the 55th minute. Leo Riley then found himself with the ball inside The Nomads' area, but was not able to get a shot away owing to the surrounding Nomads defenders blocking his path. With over an hour played, Callum Morris replaced Matty Williams to make his return from a spell on the sidelines with an injury. He helped The Nomads dig deep as Llandudno felt time running out to get something from the fixture. Numerous passes and crosses into The Nomads' area were attempted, but an organised Nomads side coped well with the pressure from Llandudno. John Owen was again in on the action in the 75th minute, sending a strike just over John Danby’s crossbar. Nathan Woolfe then came off for Sean Smith, with a communicative mix-up meaning Woolfe re-entered the field for a 30-second phase of play before being booked and leaving the field. Although The Nomads had ten minutes to defend their lead away from home, they did so relatively comfortably, with a final blow to Llandudno being a delayed red card for Danny Hughes in the 91st minute after two previous yellow cards. The red card meant the game ended on a sour note for Llandudno, but one of celebration for The Nomads who had achieved an excellent away win against an ever-strong Seasiders outfit.

Nomads bounce back at Park Avenue The Nomads recorded a 3-1 win over Aberystwyth Town in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League on Saturday afternoon. Chris Jones sent Aberystwyth ahead in the third minute, with The Nomads securing victory in the second half through goals from Shelton Payne, Nick Rushton and Matty Williams. The game began and The Nomads were immediately rocked by a goal from Aberystwyth in 6

less than three minutes. In the first real action of the game, Chris Jones found himself with goal sight from 25 yards and struck into the bottom right corner of The Nomads' net. The Nomads looked to retaliate to this early setback, and did so by dominating much of the possession in the first half. They also put pressure on Aberystwyth, forcing two dangerous free kicks in the ninth minute which were both blocked by the home side's defensive wall. The Nomads were then given a golden opportunity to make things level in the 15th minute, when they were awarded a penalty after Sam Rodon was judged to have handled the ball in his own area. Matty Williams stepped up to take it, but sent the ball wide of the left post, meaning The Nomads were still in search of

their equaliser. The Nomads continued to get at the Aberystwyth goal mouth after this miss, but without seriously threatening goalkeeper Chris Mullock, seen when Ashley Ruane battled on the byline only to see the ball go out for a goal kick. Michael Wilde did well to connect with the ball in the Aberystwyth area to have a bicycle effort go wide past Mullock's right goal post. This was typical of the first half in which The Nomads created chances but without finding a clinical finish. The Nomads indeed went in trailing to Aberystwyth at half time, but came out to eventually win the game with an impressive performance after the interval. Shelton Payne was introduced at the start of the second half, and scored with his first touch in the 46th minute. Latching onto the end of a cross into the Aberystywth area from eight yards out, Payne sent the ball past Mullock and into the bottom left corner to equalise. The Nomads built on their leveller quickly, with Wes Baynes having a goal denied by Chris Mullock who made an excellent low save to stop his powerful effort from 20 yards. Lewis Short's long throw-in's were also putting Aberystwyth under pressure in the early stages of the second half. Shelton Payne's game then came to a cruel end when he went down in pain with a knee injury, leaving the field on a stretcher to a warm reception from all spectators. His replacement was Nick Rushton, who would become the second Nomads substitute to score with one of his first touches in the 67th minute, when Chris Mullock dropped a cross only to see it fall to Rushton who volleyed to send The Nomads ahead with a low and controlled effort from seven yards out. The Nomads were now dominating the game, extending their lead around ten minutes later when Matty Williams scored in the 80th minute. From a Nathan Woolfe cross into a crowded Aberystwyth area, Jay Owen headed towards goal from the edge of the box and Williams flicked on in the six yard box to beat Mullock and give The Nomads a third. Aberystwyth remained determined, putting The Nomads under pressure during the last ten minutes of normal time with Cledan Davies having a free kick from the right wing of the Nomads half well saved by John Danby. The Nomads goalkeeper was in further action towards the end of the game, rising to catch the ball a number of times as Aberystwyth sent aerial efforts towards his goal. Chris Rimmer was brought on in place of Matty Williams to further ensure no changes to the scoreline.

A VIEW FROM THE STAND

BY WILL CATTERALL Hello and welcome to a view from the stand, where we’re preparing for what is one of the biggest possible games in our domestic football system. With 2nd facing 1st, a fierce rivalry is developing between our two clubs and we are to witness a new chapter in that tonight. First of all, it’s brilliant to be in another semi final, our third in just over a year of Andy Morrison’s tenure at the club. Unfortunately both semi finals ended in heartbreak last year, but it was still prove of our development into a club that now has a serious chance of silverware. At the start of the season, we were projected as strong enough to challenge the domination of TNS on the league – but things haven’t worked out that way. The Saints have strengthened and played some fantastic football, which brings them unbeaten in the league so far this season, scoring an incredible 52 goals on the way. Although we’re 2nd, our season hasn’t gone so smoothly. An unprecedented injury crisis has seen Ian Kearney, George Horan, Mike Pearson, Callum Morris and Shelton Payne all injured for lengthy spells, with plenty more carrying game-affecting knocks. These injuries have forced us to field a makeshift defence for much of the season, seeing us show great character to scrape through games to get results. It will forever be a ‘what if’, but our chances would undoubtedly have been better at TNS earlier this season, where we lost out 3-0 despite holding our own for most of the game. If we lost 3-0 a month ago, what will be different tonight? Well, we’re at home, where TNS lost twice to us last season. League form is one thing, but the semi final of a cup is decided on the night, and upsets have already happened in this competition with Barry defeating Carmarthen to reach the final last week. Major cup finals are a frequent event for TNS, and we’re chasing our first appearance in a cup final since 1998. If The Saints want to go for their third treble in three consecutive seasons, they will have to work for it. We’re the underdogs tonight, but we’ve carried that title into many games before and come out on top. Enjoy the game on this bitter night and cheer on the Nomads as we look to make history once again. It is testament to his professionalism that despite being a natural midfielder, he has been putting in great shifts as a stand-in centre back. Andy Morrison recently said if it wasn’t for youthful injuries Disney would be a football league player, and we will see that claim backed up again tonight.

BY TREVOR GREEN Good Evening and welcome to the second Semi Final of the League Cup. Last year, we lost in this round at Denbigh Town on a night when we had fifteen efforts on goal and missed a penalty and yet failed to score. Denbigh had two shots in the 90 minutes but won by netting one of them, so giant killings are possible - in fact tonight’s winners will meet Welsh League side Barry Town United in the final. They beat WPL side, Carmarthen town 1-0 last Tuesday. Tonight, we are to meet the juggernaut that is The New Saints. We won both league encounters here last season, but they beat us 5-0 in the Welsh Cup Semi Final. We welcome Mike Harris, Ian Williams and their committee and staff. Craig, Carl and their players and the supporters are welcome too. We both played on Sunday so their full time status gives an even greater advantage to them, but this is a game we won’t concede lightly. Sunday saw great performances from both sides. TNS did Welsh Football very proud by winning 3-0 away at Scottish League One leaders Livingstone. They now go into a semi final against St Mirren, Dundee United or Queen of the South - it would be nice to see them get a home tie this time around. We put in a great display of grown up football at Llandudno. After the disappointing midweek news that two more players are suffering serious and potentially long term injuries we need some good news. From the start, we forced the hosts back. We took the lead when a Llandudno defender's hand knocked the ball down. Some waited for the penalty decision that never came, but Nick Rushton got in and netted. Nathan Woolfe put in a brilliant free kick to make it 2-0 and then we game managed like a top professional side would. With all the players we have out injured it’s a massive achievement, we are winning games others might draw and drawing ones others might lose. Credit to a very good group of players and great management. Last week, we attended a meeting of the northern clubs at Airbus. We discussed the current system the league uses. We had joined others in supporting a return to a larger league playing each other twice. We believe that a sixteen team league would be best with lots of 10

room to expand cup ties to create extra fixtures too. We were delighted that almost everyone present wanted to see some change. There were several ideas put forward. However, there was no consensus to support the 16 team competition. No mandate to take to the league meeting later this month. Of the 12 clubs, four say they are not committed either way for or against. Two are opposed to a change and one will abstain. So only five will vote for change. Thus, with a unanimous vote needed, we will continue with the six club January split. We will keep trying to gain that mandate, but it looks like the dull and unpopular 12 club, four games system will continue indefinitely. We are disappointed and fear for the long term future of the competition. Our job remains to ensure top six status by January in each year, then European Qualification in May. If we can finish second and have an outing in the Irn Bru Cup, then there will be one exciting fixture to look forward to amongst the five or six games against the others trapped in this footballing equivalent of Groundhog Day. Last week the FA of Wales held its annual awards night in Cardiff. No expense was spared as celebrities and media outlets glitzed it up at a very glamorous event. As members of the Nation’s top league you might have expected us to be invited guests. We weren’t. As a club who had represented Wales in the Europa League and had won away in Norway, you might have expected us to possibly to win an award. We didn’t. Even tonight’s guests only had a foothold, one of their players received an award for his service to his club. The other eleven Welsh Premier League clubs were ignored by their own governing body and there was no mention of the WPL at all. If anything showed the regard the FA of Wales hierarchy hold their premier competition in then here it was. The scorn shown to our league and our club might have been considered to have brought the game into disrepute, if committed by anyone other than the Association itself. The disrespect is hurtful, I wish it was surprising. We wish to thank Nathaniel MG Cars for their support of this competition. We appreciate their involvement. We hope to go one further than last year, at the least. We wish we could field the side that did so well in the Europa League and we could do with all of the six long term injuries in the lineup, but the players have shown a great degree of passion and real commitment in their performances so far. I believe we go into this game with a realistic chance of victory and a cup final appearance would be due reward for the efforts made. So let’s get behind the lads and try to be a twelfth man for them. We thank Huw Jones for officiating, Martin Roberts and Gareth Jones for assisting and Iwan Griffiths for being 4th official. LEAGUE CUP CLASHES WITH TNS BY DAVID RAPSON This evening’s semi-final tie marks The Nomads’ 84th game in the League Cup and the 13th clash with The New Saints, equalling the number of matches we have played against Rhyl in the competition. Eight of the games against TNS have been on a home and away basis with each club winning the tie twice and losing twice. More recently in both the 2006/07 and 2008/09 campaigns we met in the group stages with The New Saints progressing from our group on both occasions and going on to win the cup in 2009. Our unexpected semi-final defeat last season at the hands of Denbigh Town stopped us meeting TNS in the final. The winners of tonight’s game will oppose Barry Town United, last week’s semi-final victors over Carmarthen Town, in the League Cup final on 21st January 2017. Konica League Cup Round One 1993/94 1st Leg – The Nomads 0-1 Llansantffraid 2nd Leg – Llansantffraid 2-3 The Nomads The first game at the Halfway Ground was a scrappy affair which neither side dominated. Belatedly, The Nomads began to string together a few scoring opportunities but the Saints grabbed the only goal of the game in the last minute. The return match has been oftmentioned in these pages before. In brief, The Nomads trailed 2-0 with 20 minutes remaining (that’s 3-0 on aggregate). Then, Tommy Lloyd headed a consolation, Scott Taylor gave us hope with a ‘curler’ and after Phil Collister had saved a penalty, Shae Jones’ 25-yard pot shot into the bottom corner left us the winners on away goals. Gilbert League Cup Round Two 1998/99 1st Leg – Total Network Solutions 1-1 The Nomads 2nd Leg – The Nomads 1-3 Total Network Solutions 3 In a spirited end-to-end game, The Nomads came away from Treflan with a 1-1 draw. Nathan Pope made his debut in goal for us but had little to do, while Andy Mulliner pulled off a great save from a Mickey Carroll's ‘scorcher’. Ken McKenna gave TNS a 25th minute lead but that was quickly cancelled out by Chris Edge. By the time of the return leg The Nomads had gone nine games without a win in all competitions and this was stretched into double figures by the visitors. Darren Ryan scored against the run of play, Ricky Evans netted another after the break from 30 yards out and Damian Currier added a third before the deficit was reduced by Stuart Rain late in the game. TNS took the tie on a 4-2 aggregate. 14

Loosemores League Cup Round One 2003/04 1st Leg – The Nomads 0-2 Total Network Solutions 2nd Leg – Total Network Solutions 3-3 The Nomads That 0-2 defeat in the home game, courtesy of goals from Justin Perry and Mike Wilde (who else?!) left us with much to do in the return fixture, but an early goal by Rob Chester gave us hope – for a while. Three quick goals from TNS either side of the interval put the game to bed before Gareth Owen and Stuart Rain ensured parity on the night and proved that The Nomads were willing to battle to the end. Loosemores League Cup Round One 2004/05 1st Leg – The Nomads 1-0 Total Network Solutions 2nd Leg – Total Network Solutions 0-0 The Nomads As luck would have it we were drawn against TNS in the first round yet again but this time with a different outcome. Darren Williams’ 85th minute effort in the first leg gave The Nomads something tangible to build on for the return game and it was to prove sufficient to win the tie. A defiant performance at Treflan earned us a goalless draw and a 1-0 aggregate victory. Loosemores League Cup 2006/07 Group B – The Nomads 2-1 The New Saints Group B – The New Saints 5-3 The Nomads In a group that also featured NEWI Cefn Druids and Airbus UK, The Nomads’ 2-1 success against The New Saints put us top of the mini-table following our previous 6-1 win away at Airbus. The goal-fest at Park Hall was our only loss in the group games and it is interesting to note that Mike Wilde scored for TNS and Christian Seargeant for Nomads – each likely to feature for the other team this evening! Both The Nomads and TNS qualified for the knockout quarter-finals when we lost 2-0 at Rhyl and The New Saints surprisingly succumbed at home to Porthmadog thanks to a 90th minute winner from Les Davies! After all that, the cup was won by Caersws in a penalty shoot-out against Rhyl. Loosemores League Cup 2008/09 Group 6 – The Nomads 0-2 The New Saints Group 6 – The New Saints 3-0 The Nomads Another change of format saw six groups of three teams feature in the 2008/09 season and The Nomads managed to come out of the hat with The New Saints and Prestatyn Town in the final group. Our home game was played in mid-August when two strikes by John Toner, one in each half, set The New Saints on their way. The Nomads then won 1-0 at Prestatyn to earn three points and brief parity before Saints shared six goals with Prestatyn largely thanks to Neil Gibson’s added time equaliser. The six group winners would qualify for the quarter-final stage along with the two best runners-up. Thus, with only 20 minutes remaining in our clash with TNS at Park Hall the game was goalless and a vital point was within reach. That’s when the tide turned against us as first John McKenna scored, then Alex Darlington and finally, three minutes from time, Jamie Wood. Not only had we lost the point we hoped to gain but our goal difference was badly dented too. We managed another victory over Prestatyn (2-1) but so did the Saints, winning away by the odd goal in seven. After beating NEWI Cefn Druids in the last eight, TNS came back from a two-goal deficit in the semi-final against Neath to win 3-0 at home and reach the final against Bangor City. A John Leah penalty and a 75th minute goal from Conall Murtagh ensured Saints won the League Cup for the third time (of what is now seven successes) while Bangor City lost it for the sixth time in six finals!

TNS' HISTORY

The New Saints of Oswestry Town play in the Welsh Premier League, the national football league of Wales. The club is the product of a merger between Llansantffraid and Oswestry Town football clubs and immortalised on Sky TV, when presenter Jeff Stelling commented: “They’ll be dancing in the streets of Total Network Solutions tonight!” About Oswestry Town Founded in 1860, making them one of the world’s oldest football clubs, Oswestry Town FC were also founder members of the Football Association of Wales in 1876 – a rare achievement for an English club. In their long history, they’ve competed in the Northern Premier League, Cheshire League and Cymru Alliance. Despite several successes including reaching the FA Cup first round and winning the Cheshire League, the club went into financial decline. In the late 1980s, Oswestry Town were forced to sell their Victoria Road ground to pay mounting debts and the club folded completely. The re-formed club opted for Welsh football and played in the Cymru Alliance/Welsh Premier from 1995/6 to 2003. After being initially refused entry to the League of Wales on ground criteria, Oswestry moved to the Park Hall athletics stadium and considerable improvements were carried out to reach Welsh Premier standards, although the ground was still a long way from meeting the modern standards of the Welsh Premier. About Llansantffraid From the small Welsh village of Llansantffraid, 18

and nicknamed the ‘Saints’, the unassuming team began life playing in the Montgomeryshire Amateur League in 1959. Here it achieved considerable success, winning numerous honours. The Montgomeryshire League Championship (1969, 1970, 1971, 1983, 1987) and the Montgomeryshire Cup competition six times between 1963 and 1976. In addition, Llansantffraid were Village Cup winners seven times, up to the nineties. In 1989/90 the club was saved from the brink of closure, with action which saw them climb through the Welsh pyramid system into the Mid-Wales League. In 1990/91 Llansantffraid were promoted to the Cymru Alliance, where they finished second and missed out on entry into the newly-formed League of Wales. Determined to progress, the club raced to the Championship just 12 months later and 1992/93 season saw Llansantffraid finish top and take their place in the League of Wales for the 1993/94 season. They were the first club to climb three rungs of the pyramid to reach the top division. Total Network Solutions In the 1997/98 season Llansanffraid changed their name to Total Network Solutions (TNS), following a lucrative sponsorship deal with an Oswestrybased computer networking specialist owned by entrepreneur Mike Harris. The partnership was working – in 1999/00 the club finally reached the pinnacle of Welsh Football when, in an exciting finale, TNS beat Barry Town to the league title and qualified for the European Cup. More success followed, with qualification in European competition becoming an annual event, including glamour ties with Manchester City (2002/03) and Liverpool (2004/05).

In 2003 the club’s phenomenal success meant the ground at Llansantffraid was no longer fit for purpose and there were no other suitable sites in the village that would sustain a full-time football club. The Chairman was forced to look for an alternative site to develop the club facilities. Merger On 7 June 2003, it was announced that Oswestry Town was to merge with Total Network Solutions, with the aim of playing at a new stadium in Oswestry from 2005/06. The troubled Oswestry Town was saved from Bankruptcy by Mike Harris, who cleared the debts of Oswestry Town, financed the merger and made both teams part of his plan for Welsh football domination. Both sides brought something unique to the newly formed club. Llansantffraid’s success in Wales and its reputation for playing in European competition and Oswestry Town’s rich history both in England and Wales. Oswestry’s Park Hall ground could be redeveloped into a facility was a recipe for further success for Chairman Mike Harris and his vision for the future of the united team. The newly-formed team continued to play in both the green of Llansantffraid and the blue of Oswestry Town and retain both club names on the shirt. A New Name Following the sale of Total Network Solutions to BT in 2006, the club changed its name to The New Saints FC. The new name captured the spirit of both clubs – including Saint Oswald and Saint Ffraid. The club’s new crest featured the Welsh dragon and English lion present in the clubs’ previous badges.

A New Ground The dream was realised in 2007 when TNS played their first game at Park Hall Stadium, totally unrecognisable from the ground that Oswestry had used in their later years. Redeveloped at a cost of more than £3 million, Park Hall has a state-ofthe-art 3G pitch and planning permission for 3,000 seats. It also features a major leisure development known as The Venue, with changing rooms, match officials’ rooms, function rooms, a 10 pin bowling alley, bar and catering facilities, an indoor children’s soft play area and a gym. The facilities benefit the whole of the community in its wider context creating a family entertainment facility in the heart of Oswestry which caters for all ages and abilities.
