MOZAMBIQUE

Managing expectations • Overview There is a now a clear opportunity to use Mozambique’s massive gas and coal wealth to fund a yawning infrastructure gap. The government has created a new development bank and is taking a tougher line with multinational companies in order to reach its goals. But the future will be increasingly determined by the practical and political management of Mozambique’s gas and coal bonanza. The IMF believes coal and natural gas production could potentially boost growth by 2% annually during 2013‐2023, with FDI eventually rising to $90bn. • PEOPLE TO WATCH: The movers and shakers of Mozambique’s promising future • OIL & GAS: The discovery of an estimated 100trn cubic feet of natural gas in the northern province of Cabo Delgado is a game changer and will catapult Mozambique into the ranks of global energy producers. Building of a massive LNG plant could start in 2014, with a view to kick off LNG exports before 2020. Italian oil company ENI – which sold a 20% stake in its Area 4 field to China National Petroleum Corporation – has announced another 5‐7 trn cubic feet of gas there. • MINING: Coal is in the lead right now. Three new mines, held by Brazil’s Vale, Anglo‐Australian multinational Rio Tinto and the UK’s Beacon Hill Resources, are currently ramping up production, followed by six others whose projects are in development, including South Africa’s Anglo‐American. • INFRASTRUCTURE: The resource boom is attracting money into infrastructure, with countries from the BRICS grouping doing the heavy lifting. • OTHER SECTORS: AGRIBUSINESS – FINANCE ‐ TOURISM
