THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Members,

I hope everyone had a great summer. After a rainy start, July and August did not disappoint. Now that everyone is back and programs have started, the Club is busy as usual. Thanks to the great work of our Recreation Services depart ment, we had another successful registration season. We do have wait lists in the popular areas, but the staff do an excel lent job managing them to enroll as many members as pos sible. Management and the Board are working to address our peak-time demand and have engaged a consulting firm to review each facility, program, and overall club usage. We will receive a final report in early January with recommen dations on how to better schedule programs to utilize our facilities to their fullest potential.

As you may be aware, the Board placed a hold on all new membership applications to take a step back and review our occupancy challenges, entrance fees, long-term capital funding requirements, and membership dues. An Ad Hoc Membership Committee is reviewing our membership cat egories and fees and will present its recommendations to the Board at our November meeting. We are still providing tours to potential members and interested parties can place their names on a priority waitlist.

The Long Range Planning Committee also met several times over the summer. This is just the beginning of discus sions on the Club's future, so there is no need to worry that we are embarking on another major renovation. However, we must always look forward to the future as we have an aging infrastructure that will need to be addressed within the next 5 to 10 years.

This month's Bark contains much information, including highlights from the Annual Member Survey beginning on page 15; I encourage you to take a read. I want to thank ev eryone that participated in the survey. We had an even bet ter response rate than last year, with 51% of the member ship represented in the results. The survey is an excellent tool to understand your overall experiences and opinions, which allows Management and the Board to make impactful improvements and evaluate future changes.

There are several upcoming events that you won't want to miss, including Monsters vs. Aliens Halloween Nosh and Slosh (adults-only), Nightmare on Nanton St (6-12 yrs), and the Out of this World Halloween Party (family-friendly). Plus, Grapes and Hops is back in mid-November, which is always an incredible time. Check out the Events Calendar on page 4. Although we have made tremendous improvements in how we communicate with our members (thank you to our communications department), I still hear from some mem bers that they didn't know about specific projects, initiatives, or events. The Bark, e-news, social media, and Club News on arbutusclub.com are all excellent ways to stay informed if you're not visiting the Club regularly.

Fall also means that it is budget time. Mike Hamar, Club Con troller, and Selina Yeung, Manager of Finance, will meet with each department manager to start the process. Mike com pleted the budget last year; however, Dale Cadeau, former CFO, is on a consultant agreement and is available should they require assistance. As you have likely heard through the media, this year's challenge is rising inflation, which will significantly impact the Club's operational costs. We have surveyed several clubs across Canada – many of whom have already had their year-end and are dealing with the same challenges. Inflation plays a significant factor in the opera tions of our Club. That said, we will make every effort to con trol our costs and keep our dues at a minimum.

I wish everyone a great fall and look forward to seeing you around the Club.

Sincerely,

2 The Bark fall 2022

Meet the Team FEATURED STAFF

A familiar face in Accounting, Mike Hamar has been promoted to Controller. He replaces our former CFO, Dale Cadeau, as the newest member of our Senior Management team.

In grade 10, Mike filled out a career questionnaire that placed accountant as his top result with a career ladder that aspired to Controller. Since then, becoming a Controller has been Mike’s career goal and this year he achieved it!

Mike has been a dedicated employee of The Arbutus Club for the last 20 years and has always been the go-to guy for generating reports. He is super-efficient and always does everything with a smile.

When Mike isn’t helping us crunch numbers, he is a loving father of two. Alongside his family, Mike enjoys going camping and hiking, with his favourite hike being Frosty Mountain in Manning Park. Mike is also an avid reader and enjoys going to concerts.

14 The Bark fall 2022

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2nd Annual Membership Survey. We appreciate your time and value your feedback. The survey is designed to identify the opinions of the gener al membership so that, wherever possible and practical, management can use the information to make impactful improvements and evaluate future changes.

With this being the second year of administering the survey, we can begin to benchmark and compare your feedback regarding the Club's services, programs, and facilities. Here we high light some important takeaways, areas for improvement, and where we really hit the mark!

THE SURVEY WAS SENT TO 6,550 MEMBERS. 2,509 surveys were completed producing a 38% response rate of the total pop ulation. Out of 3,875 total memberships, 1,987 are represented in the results, with at least one response per household, giving the survey a 51% response rate from the total membership.

OUR MOST MEMBERSHIPREPRESENTEDCATEGORIES • FAMILY 49% • COUPLE 19% • SENIOR 19% AVERAGE RESPONDENT WAS 54 YEARS OLD (Female 55% Male 44%) just below the industry average of 56. 15arbutusclub . com

The Arbutus Club has maintained a similar satisfaction level as last year, even with staffing challenges, the pandemic impact, etc., while usage across all amenities has increased. Our mean satisfaction score of 5.97 out of 7 is above the private member club industry average of 5.81.

OVERALL, 86% OF THE MEMBERS ARE SATISFIED WITH THEIR FOOD AND BEVERAGE EXPERIENCE.

The Club’s overall mean satisfaction score of 5.51 remains above the industry average of 5.33. The biggest area of op portunity for member dining is in The Bistro, specifically with food quality, menu variety, and healthier options.

Menu Rotation and variety were the top concerns among the food and beverage comments. Unfor tunately, the pandemic and the resulting staffing challenges meant every menu had to be stream lined and reduced to meet the number of staff that could prepare and cook the food. Most days, get ting basic food on the table was a challenge for our team. The real test is still ahead of us, as nothing has changed in the food and beverage industry. Staffing and product costs are our biggest chal lenges, but we know we must evolve and adapt to new ways of doing things. Unfortunately, we do not control the pricing of the products we buy. There will be increases; however, with our cost structure the way it is, our pricing reflects a zero percent prof it from members in all 3 restaurants.

THE BISTRO

• Added a separate gluten-friendly menu for ease of ordering

• Added more vegan options. You can also look for new vegan items on the weekly fresh sheet. This food category is not going away anytime soon

• Reintroduced the “Fresh Sheet” and soup & sandwich specials

• Brought back many popular items

• Introduced a new coffee brand and a healthier smoothie line

• Increased the seating capacity by 48 seats with the addition of an all-weather convertible patio

THE FIRESIDE

• Hired a new manager in charge of food and service excellence for The Fireside and The Lounge

• Offering lunch service on Fridays

• Reintroduced daily specials, fresh sheets, new and unique wines, and cutting-edge ready-to-drink cocktails

• Partnered with Knowbie, an appbased learning tool that pro vides basic to upscale restaurant knowledge and training

THE LOUNGE

• Brought back many popular items that were specifically asked for, including nachos, Neapolitan pizza, and steak pie

• Installed acoustic panels to re duce the noise during peak din ing hours

• Introduced a late-night menu on Fridays

MEMBERS MOST SATISFIED WITH: FOR IMPROVEMENT

Rated high overall, with a 95% satisfaction rating or 6.2 out of 7. However, members expressed a desire for increased cleanliness in the Hot Tub, Steam and Sauna area, exterior Tennis Courts, Adult Change Rooms and Family Change Room. Schedules have been adjusted to ensure regular deep cleaning of these areas.

Members also identified additional areas for improvement, such as The Bistro sink and recycling area, Tennis Building bathroom, lights on Tennis Courts 1-4, the lights in Arbutus Studio 3, the temperature in the Squash Mezzanine, and condensation in the parkade. Our facilities team is hard at work addressing each area, and we will be sure to share their progress.

THE CLUB APP AND OUR PROGRAM REGISTRATION SOFTWARE

Both continue to be the two greatest areas for improvement. The team at Jonas Club Manage ment (a provider of club- specific software) confirmed with us that they are beta-testing a new app to improve performance and useability. Since we already use their software it would integrate

easily with our existing systems. Although satisfaction rates in creased for our program soft ware, GameTime, the need to find a platform compatible with the app that also adapts to members’ needs remains a top priority. ♦

squash across the pond

Avid junior squash player Daniel Tiwana takes his game across the pond with a stint at the Rob Owen Academy in Birmingham, England

Peerinto the Squash Lounge and there’s a good chance that you’ll see 12 year old member, Daniel Tiwana, practicing away trying to perfect his craft. Squash is a huge part of Dan's life, enabling him to travel and play all over North America. The scope of his sport grew even larger this summer when Dan took his game intercontinental with a trip to Europe for a month.

Initially, Dan was training and playing squash in Holland and Belgium. However, the real reason he went so far was to spend two weeks staying with and being coached by a man regarded as one of the world’s best squash coaches, Rob Owen.

A former world top 20 player, Owen is a professional gambler and a massive personality in the squash world. He now coaches a handful of world class professionals and elite juniors at the Rob Owen Academy in Birmingham, England. “Rob has four major passions in life: gambling, squash, great food, and wine. But he didn’t tell me in which order!” Dan cheekily confesses.

Dan's stay at the Academy took place two weeks prior to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Coincidentally, New Zealand squash superstar and current British Open champion (the “Wimbledon” of squash), Paul Coll, was also training and staying with Rob. Paul is Rob’s star pupil and has been World No 1 for most of 2022. To live, train, and be around Paul as he was preparing for a tournament was awe-inspiring for Dan.

“It was quite surreal really,” says Dan. “I’d come down for breakfast and Paul Coll would be sitting there; I had to keep pinching myself. After breakfast, we’d head to Rob’s club and train," he continues.

Dan's tenacity, skill, and sheer athleticism was tested during his stay at the Academy. Mornings typically included a two hour session, doing drills with juniors or pros. During his lunch break, Dan would carefully observe Paul’s “pressure” sessions with Rob: basically two hours of pure brutality (one drink break allowed) where Rob is “feeding” Paul and sending him to all four corners of the court. The goal is to put Paul under such mental and physical stress that any match by comparison would almost be easier. Rob’s a big believer in a famous Navy Seals quote: “Under pressure, you don't rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training.” "It was simply unbelievable to watch," says Dan. After lunch, there was time for rest, but they’d be back at the courts for a private session in the evening.

Meet the Athlete

The trip was a true testament to Dan's formidable talent and perseverance as a junior squash player. From his tips for other players to humorous anecdotes, Dan provided a list of some of his main takeaways:

1. “The intensity of the training surprised me. Every shot, every movement had to be precise. Rob is an absolute perfectionist.”

2. “Quality beats quantity particularly in a physically gruel ing sport such as squash. Rob told me to limit my hard core, physical daily training to protect my body as I contin ue to grow. At a young age, focus on technique instead.”

3. “Squash IQ is crucial. Rob talked about the history of the game a lot and the various styles of past legends. He told me that the best athletes are like Encyclopedias of their chosen sports (and often other sports as well!).”

4. “Mental game is a huge part of sport and squash is no different. We talked about this so much. Rob said Paul was feeling enormous pressure for the Commonwealth Games as he was the No 1 seed. He was expected to win and he desperately wanted to win the gold medal for New Zealand. Anything short of gold for Paul would be a disappointment. It’s a brutal burden to carry, Rob said. Rob’s main goal with Paul was to keep him on ice really. Keeping him relaxed and stress free.”

5. “When you’re off court, switch off completely. No squash talk for a few hours at least. Let your mind rest. Do something else that gives you joy and helps you relax. Paul liked to chill in the evenings by watching cricket or watching classic boxing fights from the 80’s with guys like Hagler, Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard and Hearns.”

6. “English sarcasm often flew right over my head… apparently! The English lads have a wicked sense of humor, most of their jokes were lost on me but they made me feel so welcome. I became a part of their family really.”

7. “The lads are all extremely good football (soccer) players and are also brilliant at pool! So even when they’re relaxing, they’re still trying to beat each other!”

8. “I now say ‘cheers mate’ a lot!”

Dan shared his two favourite memories from this magical trip. “The first one was playing 14 holes of golf with Paul. I’ll never forget it. I’m riding in the same golf cart as Paul. His energy drink is next to mine in the cup holders and he’s telling me about his favourite venues in the world, the fairest players on tour and the one person he dreads playing the most (confidential, of course!). My second unforgettable experience was going with Rob to Nottingham while he coached a couple of his top juniors in the semi finals of U19 British Open. The atmosphere was electric: a pressure cooker of adrenaline and nerves. I basically shadowed Rob while he coached his players (my friends too by that stage!). It was fascinating. Rob’s people skills are unreal.”

Dan’s final thoughts on his time in England says it all. “I was in squash heaven,” he said. “I can’t wait to go back.” ♦

Was Dan a bit of a lucky charm for Paul? On the day Dan left Rob’s house, Paul left also for the Commonwealth Games village. Ten days lat er, Paul became a double gold medal winner! He won the Individual Mens gold winning 3-2 in the final! And he also won Gold in the Mixed Doubles with fellow Kiwi, Joelle King! Congrats to all!

Oh Canada! On the first day of July, we celebrated the return of our Canada Day Pancake Breakfast and our members sure had a blast! Our amazing Board of Directors and Senior Management team poured, flipped, and cooked up a storm to help serve breakfast to over 500 members.

With a bevvy of CanCon anthems to choose from the Blues Berries Band rocked out all morning, with a special number by our members and staff singing ‘Oh Canada’ together. Judging from the talent on show during the performance, our music program must be doing some spectacular work.

Children of all ages had a blast on our turf field, where they got to try out the new Ninja Obstacle Course (energy fueled by maple syrup!), bouncy castles and other inflatable games. Our families even had a visit by some very tall hockey players!

In the Youth Room, we had some beaver and moose sight ings. The children got to make animal headbands based on their favourite Canadian creature. We also had cari caturists who created laughter with funny family portraits.

An Arbutus Club tradition, the Canada Day Pancake Breakfast Bash was back for some Canuck-hoser fun, serving up a delicious spread – complete with maple syrup, of course
The Pancake Breakfast is always such a fun way to kick off the summer months and I like that there is always something for members of all ages to enjoy.

It was great to have our members come together for one of The Club’s most special occasions. We want to thank all the hardworking staff on the Recreation Services, Food & Beverage, and Operations teams for putting this event together. We also want to thank the members for making it a fantastic morning. ♦

hat a joy it is to be able to get together again isn’t it? There is virtually nothing we humans enjoy more than travel, adventure and the ability to try new things. Born out of that spirit, the Club threw its first ever Passport Party this fall; an upgrade over the time-honored Parking Lot Party and a way for all members to get reacquainted with each other and the Club after two years of the pandemic, renovations, staff changes, and heady times.

One of the wonderful things about the Arbutus Club is that it is a constant and reliable partner for members and staff alike in difficult times, be it the pandemic of 2020 and beyond or the financial crises of 2008 or 1993. During these turbulent times, many take the opportunity to reassess their status quo and the way things have been done in the past. We decided to do that with many of our traditional events and try to freshen things up as we head into a post-pandemic world. Hence, a Passport Party voyage around the Club was born for the fall of 2022.

“With so many new faces around the Club in Rec Services and beyond, including my own for that matter, we thought it would be a great idea for all the members to get to know our new

pros, staff members and managers,” said our new Director of Athletics and Recreation, Craig Mercer. “We lost Sue Snow and Dale Cadeau first, and then so many others including our skating, squash, tennis pros as well as our youth leader. We have been so lucky to find great people to replace them that are so excited to work here. We thought it would be a great way to introduce them to the membership and vice versa.”

From the airline style check-in at Club Reception, fronted by our own indomitable Tess Mendoza, to the last ditch stop on the passport stamping tour at the tennis bubble, members were able to participate in activities, see demos, try products and fill up their passports with stamps for an opportunity to win one of the great prize bundles for the young and not-asyoung alike.

With so many new faces around the Club in Recreation Services and beyond, including my own for that matter, we thought it would be a great idea for all the members to get to know new pros, staff members and managers

- craig mercer , director of recreation services

“It’s always so great to see all the members come back in the fall and have everyone get geared up for their favou rite programs, kids activities or fitness regimes” said Megan Gallant, our newly minted Assis tant Director of Athletics and Recreation.

“You can just feel the energy come sweep ing back into the Club after the summer. Everything starts to hum again”.

The main stop on tour was the South Gym where the venerable classic band March Hare supplied the rhythms of the night with Chef Michael and his team providing carnival style food to match the party atmosphere. Kids tattooed and ballyhooed in the adjoining youth room and parents in need of respite or libation adjourned to the newly renovated third floor catering rooms for one last long look into the sunset for the season on the patio of the Quilchena Terrace.

Staycations became one of the so-called new normals during the summers of our discontent the last couple of years as we all

ADAPTIVE AQUATICS

Personal Adaptive Aquatic Training is a new class that enables members to reach their health, movement, and wellness goals

Oftenwhen you think of swim programming you think of the swimming lessons your kids are taking, or maybe the swimming lessons you took as a child, competitive swimming, and aquafit. What we don’t always think of is that aquatic exercise can be both ageless and therapeutic.

Exercising in water has the unparalleled benefit of being active and achieving a great aerobic workout with minimal impact on your joints. This can be extremely beneficial as you age or if you have any type of physical limitation. Often one of the first activities you are cleared to do (if you have sustained any sport injury or are post op) is exercise in the water.

But what if you don’t know what exer cises you need to do, or would like a bit of guidance on your healing jour ney? We would like to introduce you to a new member of our Aquatics team, Rachel Hansen.

Rachel has her Bachelors in Kinesiology from the University of British Columbia,

with a special focus on leisure access and barrier removal for persons with disabilities. She is currently complet ing her Graduate Diploma in Applied Health Science at the University of Western Ontario, as well as her Bach elors in Recreation Therapy. Rachel is also a BCRPA certified trainer, boxing coach, and first-degree black belt. She has over 11 years of experience in coaching aquafit, swimming, water walking, kickboxing, and fitness. With this experience, she has worked with clientele of all levels and ages regard less of perceived barriers or ability. Her clientele have included persons with Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke survivors, fibromyalgia, en dometriosis, hearing impairments, and mobility concerns.

Rachel will be offering Personal Adaptive Aquatic Training sessions that will aim to support participants in reaching their health, movement, and wellness goals through personalized sessions. Sessions will work towards increasing strength, mobility, and

stamina. This program will be open to members of all abilities, including those who are living with arthritis, MS, Parkinson's disease, use mobility aids, and those who experience any barriers to exercise or would like to become more active. ♦

LITTLE LYRICISTS

Our Children's Centre had the unique opportunity to write, record, and perform their own song with Juno Award nominee, Will Stroet

This

year our graduating class took some time to work with a Juno Award Nominee, Will Stroet, from CBC Kids Will’s Jams.

For 3 weeks, Will worked with the stu dents to come up with song lyrics that were personal to them. They wrote 2 verses and a chorus together. The song title is “We’re Going to The Ar butus Club”. They practiced the song together and recorded it in our Music Studios – so cool!

The children had so much fun working with Will and every session they sang, laughed, and built friendships. When it was time to perform the song at grad, the children stood on stage, all proud, and sang their hearts out. ♦

LIFE SKILL LEARNING

With a practical life area, the Children's Centre Preschool teaches pupils meaningful and purposeful everyday life skills

Our preschool classroom is filled with several unique and important learning ac tivities. One of the areas that is particularly valuable, but often over looked, is the practical life area. This section of the Children's Centre teaches the children critical skills that will be come important later in life.

3 321PRESCHOOLERS LEARN IMPORTANT SKILLS:

Control of Movement

Control of IndependenceWill

All while practicing important and use ful life skills. Each skill is refined with well thought-out lessons that allow children to practice the three import ant skills repeatedly. We will go over each skill and how the practical life area encourages this learning.

1 Control of Movement

Each life skill is separated and made into activities that are placed on small child-sized trays. These activities in clude skills like pouring, spooning, water transferring, tonging, slicing, dish washing, table washing and more. The teacher invites the student to watch the teacher do the first les son. The teacher moves exceptionally slow, emphasizing each movement in slow motion. When the child tries the activity themselves, they will remem ber the slow motions and yet move at their regular speed. Children mim ic adults 2x the speed so by moving in slow motion, the student indirectly learns control of movement.

40 The Bark fall 2022 Children's Centre

2 Control of Will

All the practical life activities are made to be very attractive and familiar. The activities resemble things parents do at home in the kitchen i.e., cleaning, chopping, cooking, and preparing snack. Often, children are not doing these tasks with their parents, but be cause parents are doing them day in and day out, children understand they are important and want to do them. This makes these activities very popu lar in Therepreschool.isalways

only one of each ac tivity on the shelve which means they must wait their turn. This helps them develop patience. Students are also encouraged to use the material for its intended purpose only. Once they are shown how to do the activity it is expected that the student follows the steps to complete the process. This is not to control the child, but to help build their control of will so that they begin understanding the importance of sequencing procedures to achieve a desired product.

3 Independence

Membership Survey ResultsChildren's Centre

Since these activities are all child-sized and designed to help the child prac tice life skills, the students who do these activities build their confidence to become independent quickly. It is as if they are building the little adult in them. As they practice spooning, they become more proficient at feed ing themselves. As they practice pour ing with two small jugs, they become more proficient at serving themselves. As they practice tofu and banana cut ting or setting the table, they become more confident to contribute to the family. Over a short period of time, the students build such confidence that we often hear parents telling us “Wow, we noticed they are really starting to do things for themselves at home!”

While most focus on the importance of learning phonics, reading skill, math and science, practical life skills is an extremely important part of the child’s development as well. If you have a preschooler here or at another pre school, be sure your child’s classroom has activities that enhance their practi cal life skills. It is essential in building a strong foundation for your child’s whole self-development.

OUR HAPPY CAMPERS

From the depths of sea life at the Vancouver Aquarium to the tippy top of Grouse Mountain, our campers were on this move this summer

Wehad such a fantastic time this summer in our Youth Camps. With different themes each week, we were thrilled to go on lots of exciting out-trips again. Jumping around at Extreme Air Park, seeing all our favourite animals at the Vancouver Aquarium, sailing False Creek in a Pirate Ship, and strolling around the PNE Fair were some of the best parts of summer.

We were also lucky to partner with different areas in some amazing combo camps with Aquatics, Gymnastics, and Hockey. Some classic favourites like Dive n’ Dine, Surfin’ Science, and Artisans and Acrobats were featured once again. Campers had the opportunity to cook delicious meals, such as sushi and tacos, experiment with growing crystals and elephant toothpaste, and create beautiful sculptures and mixed media portraits. A brand-new combo camp, Hockey and Hijinks was so much fun. We participated in lots of challenges, did science experiments, and played different sports every day.

Summer camps have been so amazing this year that we’re already looking forward to our Winter Break camps! We’ll be visiting the Vancouver Aquarium, Science World, and Fly Over Canada, along with lots of other fun-filled winter activities. Register for one day or register for them all, just make sure you don’t miss out!

Please contact Chloe Ekkebus at cekkebus@arbutusclub. com for more information about youth camps. ♦

KUDOS FOR THE ARBUTUS CLUB'S KARATE KIDS

The Karate program capped off yet another successful year with their first in-person Year-End Display in over 2 years

Afternearly two years, the Karate program at The Arbutus Club was able to hold its year-end demonstration and party. The pan demic in its initial stages had crippled the program at the Club, like so many other activities and classes. When the Provincial Health Orders were re moved, our students went all out at this year’s year-end demonstration.

Nearly 60 students from the karate pro gram took part in the demonstration from as young as 4 years old. All the students demonstrated their strength, dexterity, and fitness with vigour and enthusiasm. They also displayed the karate basics with pre-arranged forms and sport sparring, plus several obsta cle courses to demonstrate their coor dination and special skills.

The demonstration ended with some food, photographs and mingling with all the parents, relatives, and friends. A perfect close to the event.

STEVE STEVENS SENIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Returning to the West Coast and The Arbutus Club after a five year absence, the national senior tennis event was a swinging success

The

Arbutus Club played host to some of Canada’s top senior tennis players from August 21-27. There were 7 age categories in singles and doubles for men and women, ranging from the over 30's to over 85's, with the Club represented by 25 members, 4 of our coaches and none other than our beloved, former Director of Tennis, Pat Macken.

The Arbutus Club was one of 5 clubs in the Vancouver area to host this prestigious event and it was a huge success. Our Club had many notable performances with Tennis Coach and Trainer Wes Bertsch winning the Men’s Over 30 categories in both singles and doubles. Member, Grant Findlay-Shirras and his doubles partner Kyrill Sinitsyn won the Men’s Over 35 doubles title, while Arbutus Club coach Jeremy Salvo and his doubles partner, Fiachra Lennon, won the Men’s Over 40 doubles title! Finally, congratulations to member Jen Tse who was the Women’s Over 30 doubles finalist with her partner Jenny Hong and the women’s over 35 doubles finalist with her partner Ariadna Noriega!

One of the highlights of the event was the reception that we hosted in our beautiful Strathcona Room and Quilchena Terrace. Top marks to our Food & Beverage team for creating a memorable experience for all. The food and venue had glowing review!

Another major reason for the success of the Senior Nationals was due to the involvement of the Club member volunteers.

A special thank you to all the volunteers, especially to Terry Buckley who organized and led the volunteers at the tournament hospitality desks helping to make sure that no stone was left unturned, providing a great experience for the

members participated in the event as both play ers and volunteers, they also enjoyed taking in the action while cheering on their friends and family throughout the week. A great week was had by all and it was a pleasure to partner with Tennis Canada for the 2022 Steve Stevens Senior Tennis Nationals.

My time at your club during the Senior Masters ranks among the best. You have a beautiful facility, so well designed and maintained. And the staff were incredibly gracious and helpful throughout our stay.

Meet the Coach PARKER ORMISTON

Recently deciding to pursue coaching as his career, Parker is entering his 4th season of coaching developmental and competitive volleyball, after having played youth vol leyball for Focus Volleyball Club, Riverside Secondary, and competing in the 2012 BC Summer Games for Indoor Volleyball. While most of his time is spent between SMASH Volleyball and Air Attack Volleyball Club, he can often be found spectating or partic ipating in other tournaments and programs throughout the year.

Having a background in Applied Behaviour Analysis and as an Education Assistant, Parker brings a passionate and enthusias tic presence to his coaching. While com peting and winning play a factor in sports, he values the engagement and apprecia tion for the game more than anything. His love for coaching comes from celebrating both the small and big achievements his athletes accomplish.

While volleyball occupies most of Park er’s time, he enjoys spending his free time watching soccer, travelling, and gaming with friends. He hopes to continue provid ing an inclusive and enjoyable environment for all athletes and ultimately achieve his short-term goal of being able to work with the Provincial Team Programs. ♦
