President's Letter

Dear members,

As we embrace the New Year, I hope everyone is feeling rejuvenated and excited for what’s to come. Reflecting on the past holiday season, I hope you enjoyed the many incredible events at the Club. I particularly loved the magical debut of Mrs. Claus’s Village at Breakfast with Santa and the extra sparkle of holiday decorations throughout the Club.

The holidays are our busiest time of year, yet our dedicated team delivered another exceptional season with ease, creating joyful experiences for members of all ages. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the entire team for their outstanding efforts and going above and beyond to bring the holiday spirit to life.

As we look forward, I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to participate in the member focus groups as part of our long-range planning membership engagement process. Your feedback was invaluable and helped shape the questions for the upcoming member survey.

This survey is a critical step in understanding what matters most to our membership as we evaluate strategic options for the tennis building, pool natatorium, and the long-term future of the Club. I encourage all members to participate when the survey becomes available. Your input is essential, and we look forward to hearing your perspectives. Watch for more information about the survey and its distribution date in an upcoming Thursday e-newsletter.

For 2025, the Board of Directors has approved a maximum of 36 membership applications as part of our ongoing efforts to monitor the Club’s overall occupancy. Applications will be processed based on the order of the Prospective Member List, structured as follows:

2024 Order of Interest List:

Priority will be given to individuals who secured their position based on the verified timestamp of their confirmed interest on January 15, 2024.

Subsequent Expressions of Interest:

Individuals who expressed interest after January 15, 2024, will be prioritized in chronological order.

This decision reflects our commitment to an equitable and efficient application process, informed by lessons learned last year, and considers the high demand and limited availability of memberships.

The Board has approved this year’s Nominating Committee in accordance with the Club’s Constitution and Bylaws. The Committee will begin its important work in the coming weeks, identifying nominees for the 2025/2026 Board of Directors.

This process begins early to allow the committee adequate time to identify and consider strong candidates for the

Board. Additionally, they will be seeking individuals interested in serving on our Club’s House or Activity Committees. Members will soon receive the Nominating Committee List, along with an invitation to submit written suggestions for potential Board or committee candidates.

Be sure to mark your calendars—some exciting new events are just around the corner! Get ready to groove at Music Bingo Shimmy Shake on February 7, and whether you're stepping into the spotlight or cheering from the crowd, don’t miss Arbutus’ Got Talent on March 7. Learn more on page 26—you won’t want to miss the fun.

As always, thank you for being part of The Arbutus Club community. Here’s to a fantastic start to the year filled with exciting opportunities to connect with and enjoy all that the Club has to offer.

Member-Only EV Chargers

We're excited to announce that the Club has recently installed four electric vehicle charging stations. Two chargers are located on the south side of the tennis parking lot, and two are located inside the P1 parkade on the north side upon entry.

To get started download the Flo app from the Google Play or the Apple App Store, sign up for an account, and follow the prompts to set up your profile and add funds. The Arbutus Club location does not appear on the Flo map, as our EV stations are not for public use. Instead, enter the 8-character FLO station ID located on the front panel of the charger in the map search bar.

Members may only use these stalls while charging their electric vehicle. EV stalls are monitored daily by Arbutus Club staff, and violators will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Hourly Rates: $2/hour for the first two hours, and $5/hour after two hours.

Winter's Natural Reflections

The Arbutus Club has been here for over 60 years now—a short time by nature's measure, yet a good portion of a lifetime for many members, staff, and passersby.

Throughout the year, the gardens and surrounding landscape continue to grow, with our help but also despite us. As we make changes, from planting annuals for instant rewards, to pruning or removing overgrowth, the shrubs and trees around us provide the foundation and backdrop for the seasons and years as we experience them. In a sometimes fast-paced life, the natural world can be taken for granted, but there is an easy remedy for this.

Winter is just the time to relax and take a break, rest a bit more, and take stock of what is, before planning what could be—in the gardens, and in life. Gardener Steve, invites you, at some point in your comings and goings at the Club, to pause for a moment. Perhaps stand in the middle of the parking lot, on the Rooftop garden, or during a short stroll along Nanton Ave and Arbutus Street, to take in the contrasting vastness and intimacy of the nature around. Look at the tall pines, cedar hedges, and hornbeam trees that embrace the Club, creating a quiet and peaceful space.

Breathe deeply, taking in the fresh air we are truly blessed with in our city by the sea, where winds constantly keep the air fresh— air oxygenated by our plant friends. This natural time of rest and reflection allows us to slow down, fostering a sense of gratitude

that arises as we simply experience being present, feeling the support of both nature and community. The plants around us are naturally resting, with less light to sustain them, and we can join them in this restful rhythm by staying connected to our daily rituals, keeping active while embracing a slower pace, and even sleeping a little longer. The light always returns, and with it, new leaves, new buds, and new flowers.

The brief winter season is a time to tuck the garden in for a while, with final weeding and mulching, protecting sensitive plants with burlap wraps, and brushing snow off vulnerable plants as needed. We can also turn our attention indoors—tending to indoor plants and keeping fresh flowers around.

With fewer demands outside, this is a good time to plan for spring by observing the gardens and contemplating changes without the need for immediate action.

We’re making plans for the gardens, with the most noticeable change being an expanded selection of perennials.

We’re embracing this process, knowing that every plant choice may not be final, but trusting in the vision to further enhance the beauty and enjoyment of our shared space—our second home.

CEDAR: A NATURAL REMEDY

Though thought of as a common hedging plant, Cedar, of which we have 2 varieties on site - Western Red and Eastern White - provides many simple healing benefits.

The bark, leaves, and twigs are made into teas and poultices to treat everything from coughs and colds to arthritis and skin problems. As well, burning dried cedar has been shown to calm and reduce anxiety and stress. The smell is lovely, as well.

Conversations with Inspiring Women in Our Community.

Celebrating International Women’s Day by spotlighting remarkable leaders at the Club.

Michéle von Beckmann

At 72, Michéle is an extraordinary triathlete and lifelong athlete. She began her fitness journey in her 50s at The Arbutus Club, inspired by her trainer, and eventually competed in an Ironman. Michéles vibrant energy uplifts everyone around her. She’s a dedicated athlete, loving mother, and proud grandmother. Michéles legacy of fitness and happiness continues to thrive through her family’s shared love for sports, a testament to her remarkable influence and zest for life.

What inspires you most?

Michéle finds inspiration in her family’s dedication to their sports. With seven out of nine family members swimming, she feels grateful for their support and motivation.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Continuing to stay active for so long is her biggest pride. Michéle values the sense of community that exercise brings and loves sharing workouts with friends.

Who will you be celebrating this International Women’s Day?

Michéle draws inspiration from many incredible women in her life, including cherished friends who are single working mothers, her friend Anne who also competes in triathlons, and her incredibly glamorous aunt who ran her household and looked good doing it! Michéle's grandmother from Sri Lanka is one of her role models, who worked as a hairdresser to put all her children through school, and at the age 50 learned how to run an Inn that her husband purchased.

Vanessa Shaw

Vanessa Shaw, is a dedicated Club member, a devoted mother, writer, and an accomplished teacher by trade with the Vancouver School Board. Vanessa recently achieved her black belt in Karate in Los Angeles earlier this month from the grand master in Japan. Vanessa’s passion for martial arts began as a teenager, inspired by characters in adventure books.

What do you love about being a teacher?

Vanessa loves helping students understand concepts. Seeing the excitement when a student grasps something new is her favourite part of teaching. When she is able to break it down and that light bulb goes off – you can actually see their excitement when a student gets it – that’s what she loves.

What advice would you give to young women or girls?

Do what you love. It sounds simple, but life is busy and so many things can get in the way. If it’s really something you love, find a way to make it happen – even if it takes a long time. Vanessa shares that karate has been so good for her physical and mental health – it brings balance to life. Set clear goals, share them with loved ones, and celebrate every step forward.

Vanessa’s own journey back to her true passion, writing has been filled with challenges and triumphs, but her family’s support has been invaluable. Her ten year old daughter gave her a post-it note that says ‘Don’t Give Up’, which she still has on her computer today.

Who will you be celebrating this International Women’s Day?

Vanessa celebrates her mom and sister, two of the strongest women she knows. Her mom raised her and her sister to be independent and capable, with an anything-is-possible attitude. Both ladies are genuine, generous and selfless – and they are amazing role models for her daughters and inspire them to be the best versions of themselves.

Hannah Kwei

Hannah Kwei is a dedicated leader within The Arbutus Club’s Junior Programs and the current Junior Doubles Club champion. She volunteers her time with the U8 Recreational Junior programs, and actively mentoring younger players. Hannah’s commitment shines as she assists at all Junior Tennis events, inspiring the next generation of athletes with her passion and sportsmanship.

Who is a strong woman in your life that you look up to, and why?

A strong woman who has greatly influenced Hannah's life is her grandmother. As an immigrant from Vietnam, she arrived in America with very little, yet she always found appreciation and value in the simplest things. Her hardworking and compassionate nature, along with her determination and resilience, allowed her to build a stable and fulfilling life—an example that inspires Hannah to persevere through her own challenges.

Through her grandmother's example, Hannah has learned to be appreciative, respectful, and kind. Her grandmother's high standards motivate Hannah to excel in academics, extracurriculars, and as a role model for her younger siblings. Hannah deeply admires her grandmother's selflessness, courage, and work ethic, and she aspires to embody those same qualities in her own life.

What’s something you’re really proud of that you’ve done this year?

This year, Hannah is especially proud of the growth and confidence she has developed as a leader, particularly in her role as captain of the school tennis team. She has played a key role in helping her team bond, strategize, and achieve victories, which has been incredibly rewarding.

Beyond sports, Hannah also stepped outside her comfort zone by performing in music showcases alongside her sisters. Both experiences challenged her and fostered personal growth, and she takes pride in the confidence she has built through them.

Any big dreams or goals for

the future?

For as long as she can remember, Hannah has dreamed of pursuing a career in business and becoming a businesswoman. Her grandmother, who started a clothing business over 50 years ago, has been a major source of inspiration. Her hard work, strength, and dedication to her craft have shaped Hannah's ambitions.

Hannah aims to build a career that combines creativity, innovation, and leadership, following in her grandmother's footsteps while carving her own path in the business world.

If you could share one message with other girls about being strong and confident, what would it be?

A valuable lesson Hannah's mom has taught her is that strength and confidence come from knowing your self-worth and staying true to yourself. Don’t settle for less than what you deserve, whether in relationships, friendships, or opportunities.

When you recognize your own value, you can advocate for yourself, walk away from situations or people that don’t align with your values, and approach life with greater confidence.

Laura Paluch

Laura Paluch, an experienced figure skating coach at The Arbutus Club, has over 25 years of coaching expertise. She grew up in a family of competitive skaters, competing with her brother both nationally and international in junior and seniors pairs and worked 7 years as a professional skater with Walt Disney’s World on Ice. Laura completed her schooling in 2000 and started working as a Child and Youth Care Counsellor with the Urban Youth Native Association. Laura is also a breast cancer survivor and this year learned that she is cancer-free after being in remission for 5 years.

Was there a defining moment or mentor in your journey?

Key moments in Laura’s life include winning World Juniors with her brother and traveling all over the world with Disney on Ice. Her battle with cancer taught her patience and the value of living in the present. Laura has had many amazing mentors in her life. As a young skater, Laura idolized Karen Magnussen, the former Canadian competitive figure skater and Olympic silver medalist. She credits her coaching mentor, George Yuhas, as the person who got her into skating in the first place. Lastly, Laura’s older sister Lynda, is her role model and someone who has been by her side no matter what, supporting her through her battle with cancer.

What advice do you have for women looking to make an impact?

Laura encourages young female athletes to focus on the present rather than putting pressure on themselves. As a coach, she believes in showing compassion and empathy, and being patient with her athletes to help guide them through the hard times in order to help them shine.

Who will you be celebrating this International Women’s Day?

Laura will be honouring her late mother, Ana, who was an inspiration and role model to the entire family.

Introducing The Arbutus Club Cart

We are very pleased to announce the newest addition to our Club Service program: The Arbutus Club Cart! Much like the roving beverage carts offered at golf courses and casinos for activity-based refreshment, we will now provide a roaming cart offering food and drinks for members who are too busy or engaged to visit The Bistro for lunch or a snack.

Our team of cart servers will circulate throughout the Club’s high-traffic areas, offering grab-and-go refreshments and the ability to take orders, process payments on the spot, and deliver food and drinks once they’re ready. Now you can keep working, studying, or playing from your favourite spot. Convenient and hassle-free, it’s like room service for the whole Club! The cart is available Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with additional hours and days to be added depending on the program’s success. Watch the mobile Club app and Club News for updates, or inquire with Don Robinson at drobinson@arbutusclub.com.

The Lounge Weekend Lunch Closure

We are unfortunately closing the lunch service in The Lounge on the weekends. After a year and a half of trial and operation, the service was not as in demand as we had thought or hoped. However, based on our experiences, we will reopen in January after the holiday season closure with expanded hours for drink service. The Lounge will open at 2:00 pm for beverage service only and at 4:00 pm for full evening food and beverage operations on Saturdays and Sundays, remaining open until 12:00 am as usual.

Club Car Care Update

Our Club Car Care car wash and detail program 2.0 will celebrate its first anniversary this January. The Club Car Care program, offered in partnership with Alex and Clean My Car Vancouver, has been an enormous success and a tremendous addition to the range of services here at the Club.

"Please tell Alex I am absolutely thrilled with how my car looks! I cannot believe how new it looks—neither can my daughter! I was not expecting him to clear out and wipe all the storage areas; it’s simply incredible!"

Start the New Year off right with a clean machine! The Arbutus Club Car Service is available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Book now and experience the convenience, first-class service, and sparkling results.

Check it out on the Club app or at arbutusclub.com under Club Services > Service Village > Club Car Care.

Chef’s Tuna Avocado Salad

with sesame dressing

Ingredients SERVES 4

1 avocado, ripe

16-20 ounce albacore tuna loins

1 large yam (peeled and sliced)

10 oz package fresh spinach leaves (cleaned, stems removed)

Packed with nutrient-rich ingredients like fresh albacore tuna, creamy avocado, and spinach, this recipe offers a perfect balance of indulgence and nourishment. Ideal as an appetizer or a light main course, this salad is packed with flavour and texture, making it a showstopper for any meal. Try out the recipe below, or order this long-time favourite next time you're dining in The Fireside.

Instructions

1. On a sterilized cutting board, cut the tuna into ¾ inch pieces, removing any sinew from meat. Cover in a bowl and refrigerate.

2. In a medium size pot, bring a small amount of water to boil, and add spinach. Just slightly wilt and remove from heat. Cool quickly in cold water or ice water. Strain water out and squeeze excess water from spinach. Set aside.

3. In a blender, blend vinegar, soy sauce, sugar, ginger, chili garlic paste sugar, oils and 2 tsp of the sesame seeds. (Can be refrigerated up to 3 weeks).

4. In a small mixing bowl, beat egg slightly and mix with ice water. Stir in dry ingredients. Stir only once. Mixture will be slightly lumpy. In a large saucepan, heat at least 4 inches of oil until a thermometer registers 350°F. Dip the yam slices in batter and fry until golden brown. Drain onto paper towels.

5. Halve the avocado, remove pit, and using a soup spoon, gently scoop flesh from skin; transfer to cutting board and cut in quarters and then cut into fans by leaving top attached and cutting strips into avocado.

6. Divide the cooked spinach into the bottom of four bowls. Mix a small amount of the dressing into the tuna, and mix until it is well coated. Place even amounts of tuna on top of spinach in bowls. Add a little more dressing in each bowl, top with sesame seeds, avocado fan, and then two pieces of warm tempura yam. Serve immediately.

This Spring Break, the Youth Department is excited to take an eco-friendlier approach to its camps by giving campers the chance to explore the incredible natural wonders our beautiful planet has to offer! From the depths of the ocean to the vast frontiers of outer space, campers will dive into exciting topics that range from their favourite sea creatures and the fascinating secrets of the Milky Way galaxy, to the intriguing insects that might be hiding right in their own backyards. Throughout each actionpacked day, campers can look forward to engaging in hands-on activities, creating fun crafts, and getting up close with creatures of every shape and size.

While Earth Day is celebrated in April, we want to inspire our campers to appreciate how the natural world shapes the land where we play, learn, and live every day. This March, they’ll have the opportunity to explore the beauty of British Columbia, developing a deeper connection to their surroundings. Additionally, the Youth Department is committed to reducing waste and minimizing paper use throughout these programs. We will also be aiming to take public transit to our field trip locations as much as possible to reduce our carbon footprint. A Fresh Start

Small, Impactful Changes for Sustainable Health and Wellness in the New Year

As the New Year begins, many of us feel the motivation to set resolutions aimed at improving our health and well-being. But the key to long-lasting change doesn’t lie in drastic overhauls or strict regimens. Instead, it’s about adopting small, consistent changes that are sustainable and can transform your life over time.

FOOD AS FUEL FOR MIND AND BODY

When it comes to your New Year’s health goals, consider focusing on food not just as fuel, but as a foundation for better physical and mental health. This year, try the 80/20 rule: aim to eat clean, whole foods like vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and healthy fats about 80% of the time, allowing yourself some flexibility for indulgences the other 20% of the time. This approach keeps eating both sustainable and enjoyable without the pressure of perfection.

At 33, after her second child, Ryoko quit smoking and transformed her health through gentle fitness classes. Now 53, she’s a certified trainer, yoga teacher, and wellness advocate, helping others embrace fitness, mindfulness, and holistic living. Make this New Year your healthiest yet with Ryoko’s advice!

Small, actionable changes can make a big difference. Start by cutting back on sugar, reducing processed foods, and incorporating more vegetables into your meals. Simple swaps—such as choosing whole grains over refined carbs or adding leafy greens to your lunch—can have a lasting impact on your overall well-being. Remember, it’s all about progress, not perfection. Over time, these adjustments can boost your energy, improve mental clarity, and reduce inflammation.

BALANCE REST AND MOVEMENT

In the rush of New Year’s fitness resolutions, don’t overlook the importance of rest and recovery. While it’s tempting to push yourself to work out more, adequate rest is essential for achieving long-term wellness. This year, make time for low-impact workouts, strength training, and regular rest days. These choices will help you manage stress, regulate energy, and avoid burnout. For women, especially those over 50, rest is crucial to prevent injury, maintain metabolism, and keep up a steady pace.

Consider adding practices like yoga and meditation to your selfcare routine. Start with just a few minutes each day and build from there—over time, you’ll feel more emotionally balanced and mentally grounded. These small habits may not yield immediate results, but the benefits will accumulate, giving you the resilience and energy to keep up with your resolutions all year long.

BUILDING A STRONGER, HEALTHIER YOU

Strength training is one of the best investments you can make for your health this year. Aim to incorporate weight training into your routine two to three times a week. Strength training not only preserves muscle mass as we age but also plays a key role in preventing chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis.

This year, focus on exercises that engage big muscle groups, and consider lifting as heavy as you can with good form. Track your progress to stay motivated, and if you’re new to strength training, consult a professional to help prevent injuries. Building strength takes consistency and resilience, but with each workout, you’re making an investment in a healthier, stronger you.

CHANGES FOR LASTING WELLNESS

New Year’s resolutions often fizzle out because they’re unrealistic or too rigid. This year, approach your goals with a mindset of creating sustainable, enjoyable habits. It’s not about striving for perfection—it’s about building a lifestyle that supports your well-being in a meaningful way.

By focusing on small, consistent changes in fitness, nutrition, and mental health, you’re setting yourself up for success all year long. These shifts, when practiced over time, can lead to profound improvements in both your health and mindset, helping you start each day feeling your best. 1 2 3 4 5

ACTIONABLE STEPS TO KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR:

LOCAL COURTS T0 GLOBAL SUCCESS

HOW LUCAS AND COOPER FOUND SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE COURT

WE’RE THRILLED to congratulate Lucas Butler on making the Queen’s University Men’s Basketball team as a 17-year-old freshman! His achievement of joining one of Canada’s premier university basketball programs reflects his hard work, dedication, and the solid foundation he built through his years with us at Split Second Basketball at The Arbutus Club. As Lucas begins his journey at Queen’s, his success shows what’s possible for young athletes who commit themselves early to mastering the fundamentals and embracing the game. Lucas is part of a proud tradition of Split Second alumni who’ve launched from The Arbutus Club to broader horizons.

Another notable example is Cooper Shugarman, who recently returned from a term studying abroad in Japan. While there, he discovered the incredible potential of basketball as a universal language, forming connections with local players that enriched his experience abroad.

Cooper’s story reveals that the bonds and skills formed on the court can extend far beyond borders and cultures. Both Lucas and Cooper began their basketball journeys early, in primary school at The Arbutus Club, where they built a strong technical and mental foundation for the game. It was there that they first learned the importance of teamwork, discipline, and resiliency. Through years of practice, camaraderie, and commitment, they developed skills that would eventually help Lucas compete at an elite university level and enable Cooper to bridge cultural gaps abroad.

At Split Second Basketball, we emphasize the value of building this foundation early. The training they received at The Arbutus Club wasn’t just about playing basketball; it was about instilling core values—hard work, togetherness, and commitment—that would serve them on and off the court. Lucas’s path to Queen’s and Cooper’s ability to make meaningful connections in Japan remind us how those lessons resonate in various aspects of life, whether in highlevel competition or international exploration.

THEIR STORIES INSPIRE US AND SERVE AS EXAMPLES FOR YOUNG PLAYERS OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE WHEN YOU START WITH A SOLID FOUNDATION.

We’re immensely proud of Lucas and Cooper for taking those early lessons from The Arbutus Club and Split Second Basketball and applying them as they step into new chapters of their lives.

Congratulations, Lucas and Cooper! Keep shining bright, and may the foundations you’ve built continue to support you in all your future endeavours.

Glow all season with expert care and products from the Spa

As temperatures drop, skin often becomes dry, irritated, and sensitive. Winter’s harsh conditions deplete moisture, making it important to maintain hydration and overall skin health. With the right approach, you can prevent common winter-related skin issues and keep your complexion radiant and nourished. Here are 10 tips to protect and care for your skin this winter:

one Winter Skincare 101:

HYDRATION

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

two

BODY CARE

Don’t forget to moisturize your body; focus on elbows and knees.

GENTLE CLEANSING

Choose a mild, hydrating cleanser to protect your skin's natural oils. We recommend the Esthederm Osmoclean Cleansing Milk for gentle, effective cleansing.

four

EXFOLIATE

Use a gentle exfoliator once a week to remove dead skin cells and support regeneration. We recommend the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant for smooth, refreshed skin.

five

HUMIDIFIER

Use a humidifier indoors to maintain moisture levels in the air.

SUNSCREEN

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, as UV rays can still damage skin in winter. We recommend the Esthederm UV Protect Cream - FPS 50+ for optimal protection.

seven LIP CARE

eight

LIMIT HOT SHOWERS

Keep showers short, and use warm water to prevent skin from drying out.

nine

FACE MOISTURIZER

Use a thicker, cream-based moisturizer to lock in moisture, especially after bathing. We recommend the Guinot Renewal Peeling Cream for intense hydration.
