President's Letter

Welcome Spring!

As I enter my final month as Club President, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey of the past eight years on the Board—years filled with growth, collaboration, and a deep appreciation for the vibrant community that makes our Club so special.

This past year was particularly meaningful as we celebrated the Club’s 60th anniversary, marking six decades of excellence, tradition, and connection. The milestone was brought to life through a series of extraordinary events that united our members in celebration of our rich history and bright future. From unforgettable gatherings to special programming, it was a year that truly showcased the spirit of our Club.

Financially, it has been another strong year, driven by the dedication and diligence of our management team, the hard work of our staff, and the steadfast oversight of our Finance Committee and Board. Their collective commitment ensured we were wellprepared for another successful audit. KPMG recently presented their findings to the Finance Committee, reporting no material concerns—a testament to the

Club’s sound financial management. The 2024 Audit and Treasurer’s Report will be available in the weeks ahead on our website and mobile app under the member area.

We appreciate your understanding as we continue to address critical upgrades required for our two original buildings: the pool and main rink. Unfortunately, there is never a perfect time to close the pool, and we sincerely appreciate your patience during this necessary work.

The House and Activity Committees have also been busy fulfilling their mandates. The recently installed EV charging stations have been a welcome addition, and the ammonia plant upgrade has enhanced safety, efficiency, and compliance with the latest ice-making technology and regulations. In addition, BC Hydro has approved a fully rebated energy audit— an exciting first step in developing a long-term sustainability strategy and climate action plan for the Club.

The Long-Range Planning and Development Committee continues to explore solutions for our aging tennis building. Recently, the Board approved a follow-up structural analysis to assess whether the existing facility can be utilized in any capacity in the long term. This analysis ensures that all options for the future of the tennis building site are thoroughly explored for the membership’s consideration. The study is expected to be completed soon, at which point the long-range planning survey will be finalized and distributed to members.

I am always amazed by the incredible things our members are accomplishing beyond the walls of our Club. In this issue of The Bark, we are proud to feature three inspiring members who continue to make an impact in their respective fields.

Connor Church, a freshman tennis player at the University of Southern California

(USC), is making waves both on the court and in the classroom at USC’s prestigious Marshall School of Business.

Many of you may remember Ed Wong from a previous feature highlighting his remarkable pursuits outside the Club. He hasn’t slowed down—his latest adventure took him to Peru, where he biked Machu Picchu, proving once again that limits are meant to be pushed.

Chris Fleck is another inspiring member making a difference in our community. As the founder of Unbeatable Warriors, he brings people together for challenging experiences that build resilience, leadership, and a spirit of giving back.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of these outstanding members and look forward to sharing more inspiring stories in the future.

There is so much to look forward to this spring at the Club! Families can celebrate the season at our always popular Easter Brunch, where Peter Cottontail and Petunia the Easter Fairy will make a special appearance, or enjoy the excitement of the Wild West Spring Carnival on April 12th.

In addition, management is launching a new Speaker Series, held three times a year, with each session aligning with one of the Club’s three pillars: Recreation/Sport, Wellness, and Connection/Community. Given the growing demand for information on women’s health, our first session in early June will feature Dr. Bal Pawa, a longtime member and esteemed specialist in integrative medicine and hormone health. We look forward to bringing engaging and meaningful discussions to our community.

I invite you to join us for the Annual General Meeting on Thursday, April 17th, at 6:00 PM, where we will introduce the 2025 Board of Directors and recognize the contributions of two dedicated

board members, Kristen Baur and Past President Jeff Thorsteinson, as they complete their terms. On behalf of the members, we extend our heartfelt thanks to both Kristen and Jeff for their years of service—not only on the Board but throughout the Club’s committee system.

In closing, serving as Club President has been a true honour, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this incredible community.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement. I look forward to seeing you around the Club this spring!

How to Adjust Your Sleep Routine for Better Rest

Sleep is one of the most fundamental pillars of health and well-being, yet it's often overlooked in our busy lives. A good night's sleep isn't just about feeling rested; it plays a crucial role in physical health, mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall quality of life. During sleep, our bodies repair and rejuvenate, our minds process and consolidate memories, and our immune systems strengthen. But despite its importance, many of us struggle to maintain healthy sleep patterns.

The way we sleep can be influenced by a variety of factors, from stress and lifestyle choices to environmental factors and changes in routine. One of the most significant elements affecting sleep is our internal body clock, known as the circadian rhythm, which regulates when we feel awake and when we feel sleepy. Aligning our sleep habits with our body's natural rhythms can improve sleep quality and help us wake up feeling truly rested.

Whether you're trying to fall asleep faster, wake up feeling more refreshed, or simply establish a better bedtime routine, let's explore some science-backed strategies can help you unlock the full restorative benefits of sleep.

Sync Your Sleep Schedule with Natural Light

Improving your sleep quality involves making adjustments to your habits, environment, and mindset. One of the first steps is to sync your sleep with natural light. Morning sunlight is essential for resetting your internal clock. Try to get 20-30 minutes of natural light shortly after waking up, which will help boost your energy during the day and improve your ability to fall asleep at night. In the evening, however, it's important to limit exposure to bright lights, especially from screens, as this can interfere with melatonin production. Using dim lighting in the hours leading up to bedtime will signal your body to wind down and prepare for sleep.

Optimize Your Sleep Environment

Your sleep environment also plays a major role in the quality of your rest. Keep your bedroom cool—ideally between 15-20°C—to promote deeper sleep. If you're too hot or cold during the night, it can disturb your rest. Additionally, make sure your bedroom is dark and quiet. Consider using blackout curtains or white noise machines to block out distractions, ensuring a peaceful environment that’s conducive to sleep.

Exercise Regularly, but Mind Your Timing

Regular exercise is another powerful tool for improving sleep. Engaging in physical activity during the day reduces stress, boosts mood, and helps regulate your sleep cycle. However, timing matters. Aim to finish your exercise at least a few hours before bedtime, as working out too late can increase adrenaline levels and raise your body temperature, making it harder to fall asleep. If you prefer exercising in the evening, opt for relaxing activities like yoga or stretching to help calm your body.

Be Mindful of Napping

Lastly, be mindful of napping. While naps can be a great way to recharge during the day, taking long naps or napping too late in the afternoon can interfere with nighttime rest. Limit naps to 20-30 minutes and avoid napping too close to bedtime to ensure you’re ready for a full night’s sleep.

Establish a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Establishing a consistent sleep schedule is another key to improving sleep. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends, to regulate your sleep-wake cycle. This consistency helps make falling asleep and waking up feel more natural. Along with a set schedule, creating a calming pre-sleep routine can make a big difference. Consider incorporating relaxing activities such as reading, meditating, or taking a warm bath, all of which can help signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.

Mind Your Diet and Hydration

What you eat and drink can significantly impact your sleep quality, so it’s important to mind your diet and hydration. Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed, as both can interfere with your ability to fall asleep. Caffeine is a stimulant that stays in your system for hours, while alcohol may make you feel drowsy initially but disrupts your sleep later. To support relaxation, incorporate sleep-promoting foods into your diet, such as magnesium-rich options like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds. Also, try to avoid large meals right before bed, as digestion can make it harder for your body to relax.

Manage Stress and Anxiety

Managing stress and anxiety is essential for quality sleep. Practices like deep breathing, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation can help ease your mind and prepare it for sleep. If you find yourself unable to sleep due to racing thoughts, journaling can also be a helpful way to clear your mind and release any worries or anxieties before bedtime.

Meet the Team

Kari joined us as a Gymnastics Coach last October, bringing energy, enthusiasm, and encouragement to every class since. A natural motivator, she believes in celebrating every win—big or small. When a student masters a new skill, Kari is the first to cheer, do a little dance, and offer a well-earned high five. Her positivity and passion inspire those around her to push past their limits and believe in their abilities.

Kari encourages her students to embrace challenges, reminding them that if one approach doesn’t work, there’s always another way to achieve their goals. Her creative problem-solving and unwavering support help build confidence in every athlete she coaches.

Outside the gym, Kari loves rollerblading with her husky and unwinding through dance, leaving it all on the floor. She also has a fearless spirit—her favourite gift was the chance to go skydiving, an experience she describes as “so awesome!”

Kari’s energy, optimism, and love for movement make her an incredible addition to our team.

A former professional hockey player from Port Coquitlam, BC, Zach understands the dedication and teamwork required to succeed in the sport. Known for his positive energy and sense of humour, Zach creates a fun and lighthearted atmosphere on the rink while emphasizing the importance of hard work. His leadership is deeply influenced by his family's values, particularly the belief that “hard work is the core value you put into everything you do.” He celebrates progress by reinforcing the significance of teamwork, inspiring players to support one another both on and off the ice.

Outside of work, Zach enjoys spending time with family and friends, especially his four nephews and niece. When he's not on the ice or working with kids, he loves playing golf and relaxing by the water. Zach’s experience, enthusiasm, and dedication make him a vital part of The Arbutus Club, contributing not only to the hockey program but also to the vibrant team culture.

Known for his warm and approachable nature, Todd fosters a positive and supportive environment where students feel encouraged to thrive. His coaching philosophy is simple yet impactful: “Be yourself on and off the court. Show your students that you care, keep it lighthearted, and remember that, in the end, you both want the same things."

Todd believes that progress is achieved through small, consistent steps, celebrating every accomplishment with positive reinforcement. His guiding principle in both coaching and leadership is to “focus only on what’s in your control.” By promoting this mindset, he helps his students build confidence—not just in tennis but in life. Todd’s diligence and responsiveness make him stand out; he is often the first to show support to others and express appreciation for hard work.

Beyond tennis, Todd is an adventurer at heart. He loves exploring new destinations, hiking, and kayaking. AMID VANCOUVER'S RAINY SEASON

, cherry blossoms bring vibrant colour and joy to the city, transforming the landscape into a breathtaking celebration of nature as thousands of trees bloom in delicate shades of pink and white. From parks to tree-lined streets, the blossoms draw visitors and locals alike, inviting everyone to pause, admire, and celebrate this brief yet magical season.

Cherry blossom trees in Vancouver have a rich history dating back to the 1930s. In honour of the Japanese Canadians who served in WWI, the mayors of Kobe and Yokohama gifted 500 Japanese cherry trees to Vancouvers Park Board, which were then planted at the Japanese cenotaph in Stanley Park.

Today, with over 43,000 cherry blossoms across Vancouver, the annual bloom has become a cherished tradition, celebrated through the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival. The annual festival, running from March to mid-April, celebrates the community, culture, and beauty of cherry blossoms. This much-loved event brings people together through a variety of activities, including:

1. Haiku Exhibition & Invitational: March 1 - June 1

The Haiku Invitational is a global online contest showcasing winning haiku in publications, celebrity readings, and visual art, with this year’s program expanding to include Japanese artist collaborations.

2. Blossoms After Dark: March 28 - 30

For three nights only, stroll through David Lam Park beneath illuminated cherry blossoms, enjoy live ambient music, and marvel at mesmerizing performances.

3. The Big Picnic: Saturday, March 29

Enjoy live music, art, haiku exhibits, yoga, food trucks, sponsor booths, and hands-on workshops for all ages.

4. Sakura Days Japan Fair: April 12 & 13

Sakura Days Japan Fair celebrates Japanese culture with food, music, art, performances, tea ceremonies, cultural activities, and local vendors, with events held both indoors and outdoors.

For more details on the festival, visit vcbf.ca.

FOR OUR MEMBERS at The Arbutus Club, you don’t have to venture far to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms. Our neighborhood is home to a variety of scenic spots where you can admire the blossoms, from quiet residential corners to nearby green spaces. These serene locations provide the perfect opportunity for a leisurely walk or a moment of reflection beneath the delicate blooms.

1. The Arbutus Club property

2. Nanton Avenue & Marguerite Street

3. Angus Park

4. 20th & Arbutus Street

5. SE Corner of King Edward at Valley Drive

As the cherry blossoms bloom, we hope you find time to enjoy the beauty of the season. It’s a perfect reminder to appreciate the simple joys that nature offers, and to take a step back and reflect on the little things that make this time of year so special.

Made In The Shade A Garden’s Hidden Gems

It's a fairly common misconception that there are not many plants that grow or thrive in the shade. Of course, the plant kingdom is incredibly diverse, with some plants thriving in full sun, others needing a mix of sun and shade, and some preferring more shade. Many of our shade plants are also understory plants where they occur in nature, adapted to growing below the sun lovers.

Here at the Club we have mostly sunny areas, where our evergreens thrive while also providing a solid backdrop for other plants. A few prime, shadier spots have been identified as ideal locations for adding perennials over the next few seasons. These selections will be chosen to ensure flowering at different times of the year, creating extended visual interest.

When preparing for planting in shaded areas, ensuring proper soil drainage is even more important than in sunny locations, as most plants do not tolerate constantly wet roots. Start by assessing the existing soil type. If drainage needs improvement, mix in sand; if moisture retention is required, add organic matter like mushroom compost. There is no exact formula—success depends on understanding the specific needs of each plant and planting area.

Lungwort
Solomon's Seal
Lenten Rose
Ligularia
Ajuja
Astilbe
Bleeding Heart
Bishop's Hat
Siberian Bugloss

As with most perennials, once planted firmly and established with adequate watering, the maintenance required is simply removing spent flowers during the growing season and cutting back in fall or spring. In the first season, attention to moisture will also be required. Choosing from these perennials will brighten the area a bit, even if just the distraction of colour from the other green foliage around.

We have the benefit of year-round greenery in most areas of the grounds around the Club, so when the perennials are cut back for winter it will not leave any barren areas. If you have an open bed or other highly visible spot, you may also consider some shade-loving shrubs for a year round foundation, such as: Sweet Boxwood, Skimmia, Acuba, Euonymous, Heavenly Bamboo, and Boxwood.

With thoughtful plant selection, shaded spaces can become just as vibrant and dynamic as sunnier spots. While these areas may not receive direct sunlight, they offer an opportunity to showcase the beauty of foliage, texture, and subtle color variations that thrive in lower light. Shade-loving plants often bring a lush, layered look to the landscape, creating a sense of depth and tranquility that can be just as captivating as a sun-drenched garden bed.

By embracing the unique beauty of these hidden gems, we can transform shaded corners into inviting, thriving spaces filled with life. From delicate blooms that brighten the understory to rich, deep-green foliage that adds contrast and dimension, shade gardens have an understated charm all their own. With a thoughtful mix of perennials, shrubs, and evergreens, these areas can offer year-round interest, ensuring that no part of the landscape feels overlooked.

A well-planned shade garden not only enhances the overall beauty of a space but also provides a haven for pollinators and wildlife, contributing to a more diverse and resilient ecosystem. Whether adding a few new plants to an existing bed or designing an entirely new shaded retreat, every thoughtful choice helps create a landscape that thrives in every light condition, offering color, texture, and life through every season.

Tequila and Taco Tuesday!

Tuesday, April 8 | The Fireside

Join us in The Fireside for a tequila tasting followed by a tacos and beer fiesta after class! The resident matador of mixology, Brendan Jones, is back with another master class in tipple, this time the tipping is of tequila. Sample the best that our south of the border NAFTA neighbors have to offer then wash it down with tacos and cervezas. Better than a trip to the Mayan Riviera and you don’t have to wait for the transfer bus to the resort.

Easter Sunday Brunch

Sunday, April 20 | Third Floor | All Ages

Somebody tell Mr. Carroll that the March Hare is truly delirious this year—Easter doesn’t even arrive until late April! Hopefully, the April showers will have passed, giving way to brilliant sunshine to match the beautiful food our crackerjack kitchen team prepares for the first big brunch of the year.

Separate seatings are available to accommodate both early and late risers.

Mother's Day Brunch

Sunday, May 11 | Third Floor | All Ages

Forrest’s mama may have said that life is like a box of chocolates—you never know what you’re going to get—but that’s not the case here at the Club for Mama’s big day.

It’s time to celebrate your mom, and you know exactly what you’re getting: a big, bountiful brunch—and plenty of it! So don’t miss out—book early, as these spots are more coveted than the Apple stock Lieutenant Dan bought in the movie.

Navigate to arbutusclub.com under Member Area > Events Listing to register for events. For more information, contact Don Robinson, Director of Food and Beverage, at drobinson@arbutusclub.com.

World Famous Lobster Month

May 30 - June 29 | The Fireside

June is the best month of the year here at the Club for many reasons—but mainly this one! Yes, school lets out, and summer officially arrives on June 21 (hopefully!), but the real royalty of the sea—the lobsters—know that this is their time to shine.

At The Fireside, we’re celebrating the greatest denizens of the ocean floor since Aquaman and the lost city of Atlantis. Our lobsters are Atlantic, flown in specially by Chef Michael, because only the best crustaceans will do for our annual celebration of the Maritimes’ finest export—this side of Rita MacNeil.

The Yacht Rock Fest and Lobster Boil

Saturday, June 21 | Third Floor | 19+

Brother, you don’t need to pass the doobie because I hear Michael McDonald might be coming solo to this one! It’s gonna feel like San Diego circa 1982 and minute by minute it will get more fun than a fool could believe as we eat, dance, and ride like the wind into the night. We will start off with a lobster boil dinner blowout with beer and wine included, then proceed into a legendary yacht rock dance party with our live band Sweet Velour. Ah, summer breeze, makes me feel fine.

Father's Day Brunch

Sunday, June 15 | The Quilchena Terrace | All Ages

Quinn Hughes calls his dad before every game, so you might want to do the same—because this is going to be a big one!

Of course, we have the big brunch to break bread with the big man, but don’t forget about the legendary Arbutus Club Father’s Day Trivia, where the family can impress Dad with their Mensa-like knowledge of pop culture and all things trivial. It’s definitely better than watching Tiger’s new indoor golf league on a Tuesday night! Join us on the third floor for eggs Benny, bagels, and brainiacs.

Rooftop Opening Party

Friday, June 27 | The Rooftop | 16+

Look at the stars, look how they shine for you—as the Rooftop opens to welcome another golden era.

We’re ushering in the new season with a party awash in amber tones and yellow surprises. For one day only, we’ll all be blonde and find out if they really do have more fun—especially in the sun. So, my flaxen-adorned comrades, let’s dance to the summer vibes of DJ Mello Yellow until the night ignites the sky. With a food truck-style BBQ menu, a complimentary welcome drink, and full table service, this is a party worthy of platinum status.

farmers markets let'sexplore local

seasonal delights + fresh picks

As the weather warms and the vibrant colours of spring emerge, many of Vancouver’s farmers markets start up again in May and June, offering a unique opportunity to connect with local farmers, artisans, and producers. These bustling markets are the perfect place to explore the region’s fresh, seasonal produce, locally made goods, and delicious prepared foods.

Spring marks the beginning of the local growing season, and Vancouver’s farmers markets are filled with an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Local favourites like leafy greens, radishes, asparagus, strawberries, and rhubarb are in full swing, providing a delicious and colourful selection of foods. Many markets also feature early spring herbs like mint and cilantro, which can be found alongside unique locally grown varieties of mushrooms, microgreens, and sprouts.

supporting local farmers + artisans

Visiting a spring farmers market is not just about fresh food — it’s also an opportunity to support local farmers and small-scale producers. Vancouver’s markets showcase a range of locally crafted goods, including artisanal bread, cheeses, jams, honey, and handcrafted soaps. Shopping at these markets helps keep the local economy thriving while reducing your carbon footprint, as much of the produce and goods come from farms and vendors within a short radius.

a community gathering

Spring farmers markets in Vancouver offer more than just a shopping experience; they are vibrant community hubs. Many markets feature live music, cooking demos, and workshops, making them a fun, family-friendly outing. They also provide a great chance to meet local producers and learn about the food you eat — from sustainable farming practices to how to prepare the perfect spring salad.

MEET THE ATHLETE

Connor Church, a member of The Arbutus Club and a freshman tennis player at the University of Southern California (USC), is not only making waves in collegiate tennis but also at USC’s Marshall School of Business. Connor has had a remarkable journey to date, both on and off the court.

Connor’s athletic journey began at The Arbutus Club, where he participated in a wide range of activities, from tennis and basketball to hip-hop dance and swimming. He also shone on the ice, playing rep hockey for The Arbutus Club and spring hockey with the BC Selects, Warriors and Burnaby Winter Club’s Steelers’ Gold teams. As a competitive skier, Connor was selected for elite programs such as Whistler’s Ultimate 8’s and Whistler Mountain Ski Club’s U12 racing programs. However, at the age of 11, he made a pivotal decision to focus on tennis in pursuit of representing British Columbia at national tournaments.

Connor’s decision paid off as he quickly rose through the ranks. As a junior, he achieved a career-high International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking of No. 84 in the world and became the No. 2 U18 player in Canada. He represented Canada at the Junior Davis Cup in Puerto Vallarta in 2022 and brought home a silver medal as a member of the British Columbia team at the Canada Summer Games later that year. His list of accomplishments in tennis includes:

Multiple ITF Singles and Doubles Titles including back-to-back wins at the ITF J100 Vancouver in 2023 and 2024.

Reaching the Round of 16 at the prestigious ITF J300 Indian Wells in 2023.

Singles Champion at the Stanley Park Open and Surrey Open in 2024.

Competing at an international level meant relentless travel. Connor’s journey took him to tournaments across Canada, the United States and Mexico, as well as throughout Central and South America and the Far East. Maintaining a top junior ranking required constant participation, as the ITF’s points system creates pressure to compete frequently.

To balance his education with a rigorous tournament schedule, Connor transitioned to online school during grade eleven. Reflecting on the demands of

pursuing his dreams, Connor shared, “Although I travelled all over the world, there were sacrifices. I had to leave the school that I loved, where I’d been since grade one, as well as my friends and family.” Connor’s dedication and perseverance earned him recognition as a NCAA Blue Chip recruit with a career-high ranking of No. 10 in the class of 2024 according to the Tennis Recruiting Network. With multiple NCAA Division One universities to choose from, Connor ultimately selected USC.

Speaking about his experience as a student-athlete at USC, Connor shared,

“I am excited to be part of a team with such an exceptional record for developing talent and winning championships while, at the same time, experiencing USC's academic excellence.”

From his early days on the ice rinks and ski slopes to his current success on the tennis courts, Connor’s story is sure to inspire other young athletes to chase their dreams while balancing education and sports.

MEET THE ATHLETE

As many of you may remember, not that long ago we featured one of our amazing members, Ed Wong, and all the accomplishments he has achieved pursuing activities outside of the Club. He has not slowed down and we had to share about his latest achievement—biking Machu Picchu in Peru!

This is Ed’s third long biking tour—or what he likes to call a "therapeutic break"—in the past two years. The first was a 10-day ride from the Dolomites to Lago di Garda, then on to Verona and Venice in May 2023. The second, in April-May 2024, was a 10day journey through the Atlas and AntiAtlas Mountains in Morocco.

Most recently, in October 2024, he completed a 12-day cycling tour in Peru, traveling from the Andes to the Amazon.

Peru, in Ed’s view, is a fascinating country—highly biodiverse, rich in flora and fauna, and steeped in Inca history. And, of course, Machu Picchu needs no introduction. This bike tour provided an upclose experience of it all—and more. For those who enjoy plenty of quinoa and coca leaves, there’s no healthier way to

go. Pisco and Pisco Sour weren’t the best thirst quenchers, but they certainly delivered a buzz. "When in Rome," Ed figured, so he tried the local alpaca meat—not something he’d recommend replicating at home. (Just as he did in Morocco with camel meat—again, not a home-cooking suggestion). The weather threw everything at him—cold and hot, sunny and rainy. The ride itself was a thrilling mix of high-altitude descents from 4,500+ meters, rolling mountains and valleys, and frequent encounters with alpacas, llamas, pigs, cows, and, of course, the inevitable sheep traffic jams. Three standout moments made this trip especially memorable. While hiking parts of the Inca Trail, he and his group were quite literally guided by five alpacas. A remote lodge, accessible only by boat, became the base for a daylong trek deep into the Amazon rainforest. And on three or four occasions, instead of the usual box lunch, a traveling chef prepared hot three-course meals—complete with a dining tent and tablecloth service.

But Ed isn’t done yet. More long-distance biking adventures are already lined up. Next is a ride through Thailand, from Bangkok to Chiang Mai via Ayutthaya and Sukhothai (in February, just a week away). Springtime will bring a cycling tour of the Balkans—covering Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Montenegro. And in the fall, Bhutan is on the agenda, possibly with Nepal added to the itinerary.

Ed’s passion for adventure and exploration shows no signs of slowing down. With each journey, he pushes new boundaries, embraces different cultures, and takes on thrilling challenges—all while proving that a love for cycling can take you to some of the most incredible places on Earth. We can’t wait to hear about his upcoming rides and the stories he’ll bring back from Thailand, the Balkans, and beyond. Safe travels, Ed—your next adventure awaits!

VOLLEY BALL

MORE THAN JUST A GAME

Volleyball offers far more than just a sport to play—it provides lifelong benefits that shape character, resilience, and personal growth. Through play, struggle, teamwork, and support, the game instills valuable lessons that extend beyond the court.

Put up a net and roll out a ball, and most kids will naturally start playing. Unstructured activities, like spontaneous volleyball games, create opportunities for kids to learn and enjoy the sport without the pressure of coaching. The best way to foster this is by installing a net in your backyard or bringing a portable net to the park. While parents often focus on their child's technique or skill level, the most crucial ability in volleyball is “volleyball reading”—the instinct to anticipate and react—which is best developed through simply playing the game.

Sports provide a rare opportunity for children to face and overcome challenges, and volleyball, as a unique rebound sport, amplifies these struggles. For parents who dislike seeing their child struggle, the reality is simple: either keep them out of the sport or avoid watching practices and games. However, struggle is an essential part of learning. Allowing children to work through difficulties helps them develop problem-solving skills and resilience.

Instead of dwelling on mistakes, encourage them to focus on the next play. Reward effort and attitude—two aspects of the game they can always control. Volleyball is played in 219 nations—more than the number of United Nations member countries. Wherever you travel, you can join a game on a hard court or a beach, connecting with locals through the universal language of volleyball. Like tennis, volleyball is a sport that can be played for a lifetime. Just visit Kits Beach or Spanish Banks on a warm day, and you’ll see people of all ages enjoying a game of beach volleyball.

One of the reasons volleyball is so popular is that it embodies the essence of teamwork.

AFTER EVERY POINT— WIN OR LOSE—PLAYERS COME TOGETHER TO OFFER POSITIVE SUPPORT.

This connection translates to success; teams that support each other perform better. Volleyball takes time to master, with most players reaching peak performance in their mid-twenties. Mistakes are inevitable, especially at the beginner and intermediate levels. Unconditional support, regardless of success or failure, helps build confidence and personal strength. Parents and coaches can work together to help young players grow stronger, both on and off the court.

By embracing these gifts—play, struggle, lifelong participation, and support—volleyball offers an experience that extends far beyond the game itself, shaping players in ways that last a lifetime.

How Technology Can Enhance Your Training and Recovery.

HAVE A QUESTION or want more information on utilizing the technology available in the Fitness Centre? Please contact Robert Gibb, Fitness Centre, Wellness, and Personal Training Manager, at rgibb@arbutusclub.com.

In the ever-evolving world of fitness, technology plays a pivotal role in enhancing performance and ensuring optimal recovery. At the Club, members have access to state-of-the-art tools and programs designed to assess, program, and recover, making your fitness journey more effective and enjoyable.

Incorporating advanced testing, programming, and recovery tools into your fitness routine can make a significant difference in your overall performance and well-being. The Arbutus Club's comprehensive approach, featuring VO2 max testing, body composition analysis, an exercise prescription app, and state-of-the-art recovery tools, provides members with the best technology to support their fitness journey. By prioritizing self-care and utilizing these innovative tools, athletes can ensure they are always at their best, ready to tackle their next workout with renewed energy and strength.

Direct VO2 Max Testing

VO2 max testing measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during exercise, providing a clear indicator of cardiovascular fitness and cardiovascular zones. A higher VO2 max correlates with better endurance, overall health and longevity, making it a valuable tool for athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike. By understanding your VO2 max, your Personal Trainer can tailor your training programs to improve aerobic capacity.

Body Composition Testing with the InBody Machine

The InBody machine offers a comprehensive analysis of body composition, including muscle mass, fat mass, and total body water. This detailed breakdown helps members set realistic fitness goals and track their progress over time. By knowing their body composition, members can make informed decisions about their workouts and nutrition plans, leading to more effective and sustainable results.

Exercise Prescription App

The Arbutus Club's exercise prescription app is another innovative tool that enhances the fitness experience. This app allows members to receive personalized workout plans from our Trainers and Physiotherapists based on their fitness assessments and goals. By using the app, members can stay on track with their fitness routines, monitor their progress, and make adjustments as needed to ensure continuous improvement.

The Arbutus Club’s New Recovery Zones

Recovery is a crucial component of any fitness regimen. It allows the body to repair and strengthen itself, reducing the risk of injury and improving overall performance. The Arbutus Club emphasizes the importance of recovery and self-care, providing members with the best tools and facilities to support their recovery journey.

The new Recovery Zones at The Arbutus Club feature Normatec compression sleeves, which use dynamic air compression to enhance blood flow and lymphatic drainage. This technology accelerates muscle recovery and reduces soreness, helping athletes recover faster and perform better.

The Arbutus Club Fitness Centre also offers foam rollers and massage guns as part of their recovery toolkit. Foam rollers are excellent for myofascial release, helping to alleviate muscle tension and improve overall mobility. Massage guns provide targeted, percussive therapy that can reach deep muscle tissues, offering localized pain relief and promoting faster recovery. Both tools are valuable additions to any recovery routine, catering to different needs and preferences.

"Using the compression sleeves has been great. After a tough leg day, I feel rejuvenated and a lightness."

Meet the Maestros

The Arbutus Club’s Music Department provides a vibrant and welcoming space for members of all ages to explore their musical passions. Whether you’re a budding pianist, an aspiring guitarist, or eager to refine your voice, our programs provide and environment to learn, grow, and express yourself through music.

Our talented instructors provide personalized lessons in piano, guitar, clarinet, saxophone, and voice, fostering creativity and confidence in every student. We sat down with a few of our music instructors to learn more about their teaching styles, philosophies, and their own musical journeys.

Martina Govednik

Piano and Music Theory

Martina holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Belgrade and a Master’s Degree in Solo Voice Performance from McGill University in Montreal. Along with actively teaching music, Martina performs on a regular basis with major local music organizations such as the Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Chamber Choir, and Vancouver City Opera.

Tell us a bit about your teaching philosophy or style

I teach piano, music theory, and singing—primarily to children, but also to adults. I started playing piano at the age of six, and it became the foundation of my musical journey. That journey led me from earning a degree in classical piano performance in Serbia to completing my master’s in opera singing at McGill, all while teaching, singing in choirs, and directing community ensembles. Over the years, I’ve performed as a soloist on classical stages, in jazz bars, and even in rock venues.

I believe that learning piano and understanding music through harmony provides students with a strong foundation that allows them to adapt to any musical style or instrument in the future. This is why I strongly encourage all my students to develop their piano and theory skills—these abilities make tackling new musical challenges much easier and more enjoyable.

How has music impacted your life?

There are no better words to describe how music has impacted my life than to say—I never feel like I’m ‘going to work.’ Every day, I look forward to spending time with some of the coolest humans out there—especially kids—who share a passion for the magical world of music.

I also love performing. Whether stepping onto the operatic stage to bring timeless human stories to life, donning a costume and pouring my heart into a performance at Queen Elizabeth Theatre, or improvising jazz tunes in an intimate setting with friends, I can hardly call this a ‘job.’

I am forever grateful to my parents, both musicians, who introduced me to this incredible journey and supported me along the way. Now, I strive to do the same—one student at a time.

If you could play with any musician, alive or from history, who would it be?

I am fortunate to perform with many incredible musicians through my work, and my favourite moments happen when I make music with close friends—it becomes a higher form of communication. However, if I could share a room with Herbie Hancock or Robert Glasper, I would be in absolute heaven!

Olga Ioutskevitch

Piano,

Olga Ioutskevitch graduated from Moscow Gnessins’ Musical Pedagogical Institute with a Master’s Degree in Musicology and Pedagogy and received her Bachelor of Music (Piano and Theory) from Donetsk’ College of Music in Ukraine. She taught in the music college in Ukraine and has been teaching the Kodaly program at the Vancouver Academy of Music.

Tell us a bit about your teaching philosophy or style

I started music lessons at the age of 5, went to music school, music college, University, then started teaching. Music is part of my whole life. It’s my passion which became my profession. I’m a lucky person.

How has music impacted your life?

My belief is that every child is musical, and every child should experience music through singing, or learning to play an instrument. Music educates the heart and soul, allows a child’s artistic mind to express itself, and sparks imagination. As Albert Einstein said: “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” My priority is to make it possible for students to be successful—then children will be inspired and motivated to learn more.

If you could play with any musician, alive or from history, who would it be?

Any violin player. I love violin and wish to learn how to play one day. Maybe when I retire!

Christopher Fraser Guitar

Born and raised in Vancouver, Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from Capilano University and is a BC Arts Council grant recipient having studied in New York under contemporary jazz guitar masters Peter Bernstein and Gliad Hekselman. When he’s not teaching, Chris can often be seen performing at Vancouver’s landmark jazz venues.

Tell us a bit about your teaching philosophy or style

My teaching style is focused on building self-confidence by creating a comfortable and encouraging environment in lessons. While my specialty is in guitar and I can teach it at a high level, my goal is primarily for students to become lifelong music lovers and learners.

How has music impacted your life?

Music has impacted my life similarly to how a family member impacts one’s life. It’s simply been there as long as I can remember and I have a hard time imagining my life without it. Music is the reason for my oldest and newest friendships. It really is an endless chasm of history and potential and culture and experimentation and work and entertainment. Incredible!

If you could play with any musician, alive or from history, who would it be?

Johann Sebastian Bach or John Coltrane.

To learn more about Music and Arts programs available at The Arbutus Club, please contact Megan Gallant, Recreation and Arts Director, at mgallant@arbutusclub.com.

Chris Fleck has been a proud member of The Arbutus Club for over 40 years, where the Club has played a pivotal role in shaping and supporting his lifelong wellness journey. From novice hockey to competitive tennis and SEALFIT preparation – a demanding program inspired by Navy SEAL traininghe has benefited from the Club’s strong sense of community, receiving invaluable support and mentorship along the way.

Beyond sports, Chris is passionate about personal growth and is the founder of Unbeatable Warriors in Vancouver—a free program that combines SEALFIT and training in leadership, resilience, mental toughness, and functional fitness. Unbeatable

Warriors also supports Little Warriors, a national charitable organization committed to preventing child abuse, raising awareness, and supporting survivors. Through fundraising efforts and public education, Chris helps raise awareness for the essential work Little Warriors does in communities far and wide. The funds generated from these initiatives directly support children from Vancouver attending the program, providing them with crucial resources for healing and personal growth.

We asked Chris to share more about his wellness journey, giving back, and how members can get involved.

What motivated you to try SEALFIT in California, and how did it inspire you to bring a similar program to Vancouver?

My wife Suzanne gave me a book about the SEALFIT program—8 Weeks to SEALFIT. It focused on operating with intention, paying attention to detail, and understanding your ‘why.’ Inspired by it, I convinced my brother to check it out with me. Since then, I’ve now participated in seven events with the SEALFIT team, it’s been truly life changing. This process has taught me many lessons and it is my mission to share them with as many people as possible!

What was the hardest part of the training, and how did it challenge you mentally?

The training is designed to push you out of your comfort zone. It challenges you physically, mentally, and emotionally; however, it's only through the process that you can truly grow as a person.

Could you expand on why you brought a similar SEALFIT program (Unbeatable Warriors) to Vancouver? What is involved in the weekend experience?

I brought this event to Vancouver because I wanted my friends, colleagues, and community to experience something truly extraordinary. When I completed my first SEALFIT event, it had such a profound impact on me that it’s difficult to put into words. There aren’t many opportunities in life to truly test your soul. SEALFIT challenges you physically, mentally, and emotionally, pushing you to your limits while teaching you the importance of teamwork and leadership. It instills a deep sense of selflessness.

I describe our weekend as a “leadership transformation” experience. On Day 1, participants get an authentic taste of Navy SEAL training through physical challenges that anyone can take on. Day 2 offers a more relaxed atmosphere, where we learn proven Navy SEAL tools and techniques to elevate our daily lives. Ultimately, it’s about becoming the best version of yourself.

We then take this newfound intention and purpose and focus on giving back to our community— particularly to children. That’s where Little Warriors comes in. We raise money during the dinner and throughout the weekend because we believe there is nothing more important than protecting and supporting our children.

What is the most important lesson you've learned from both programs (SEALFIT and Unbeatable Warriors)?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned from SEALFIT is that we are far more capable than we often realize. From Unbeatable Mind, I’ve learned that I can be a better father, husband, brother, son, and member of the community. The key is to never stop working on becoming a better version of yourself. Do the work!

Chris Fleck at an Unbeatable Warriors Weekend

What are you most proud of as the founder of Unbeatable Warriors?

I'm most proud to be part of a very special community of incredible people who are truly trying to make a difference on so many levels.

Can you share more about the Little Warriors charity and what inspired your partnership with them through Unbeatable Warriors?

I first came across Little Warriors while looking for a cause close to my heart to support. At the time, my kids were young (and the guys I trained with had children around the same age), and I was reading up on the statistics of child abuse. I learned that this charity not only had a world-class facility but was also making a significant impact on children’s lives. I reached out to them, and we arranged a meet-and-greet at a small fundraiser we organized. The rest, as they say, is history. I highly recommend everyone check out Little Warriors at littlewarriors. ca, as I can’t begin to express the incredible work they’re doing, and the amazing people involved.

Why would you recommend Unbeatable Warriors to others, and how can they get involved in the program?

I would highly recommend the Unbeatable Warriors program/event to anyone looking to improve themselves. Period. There is no cost to participate other than your time and willingness to invest in yourself. It’s an experience that can truly open your eyes to what’s going on inside you. It pushes you to ask tough questions—questions that only you can answer. If you're searching for something new, something that will reignite your passion, help you establish new principles, and give you a fresh sense of purpose, this is for you. Let's Go!

CYCLING THROUGH THE FOREST

Explore Pacific Spirit Regional Park

Pack your gear, hop on your bike, and discover the urban oasis just minutes from The Arbutus Club.

When most people think of cycling in Vancouver, Stanley Park’s scenic seawall is often the first place that comes to mind. However, beyond the bustling waterfront, a hidden gem awaits—Pacific Spirit Regional Park, a sprawling forested retreat in Point Grey.

Here, you’ll find towering trees, winding trails, and the peaceful sounds of nature. Whether you're cycling, hiking, or simply enjoying the fresh air, this 90-hectare park is a nature lover’s paradise— and it's right in our backyard.

A SANCTUARY IN THE CITY

Pacific Spirit Park isn’t just a collection of trails—it’s an ecological treasure that was designated as a regional park in 1989 to protect its rich biodiversity. Today, it serves as a wildlife corridor, providing a habitat for everything from owls and woodpeckers to deer and salamanders. The park’s diverse landscape includes forests, creeks, beaches, cliffs, and bogs, making it a fascinating place to explore.

Even if you're not a cyclist, Pacific Spirit Park is a wonderful place to go for a peaceful hike along shaded forest trails, reconnect with nature, and spend time with friends and family.

TRAILS FOR EVERY RIDER

With 55.5 kilometres of trails, including nearly 38 kilometres of multi-use paths, cyclists of all skill levels can find a route that suits them. The network offers a mix of gravel and dirt trails, ranging from smooth, wide, and flat paths to more challenging, hilly terrain, ensuring an enjoyable ride for everyone.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

• Choose the right trail: we recommend checking AllTrails in advance to find the best route for your skill level.

• Bring the right bike: most trails are gravel or dirt, so a hybrid or mountain bike is ideal for a comfortable ride.

• Respect the wildlife: keep your distance, avoid feeding animals, and stay on marked trails to protect sensitive habitats.

• Leash your pets: dogs are welcome, but they must be on a leash in most areas to protect local wildlife.
