general info WINTER SESSION
MONDAY, JANUARY 6, 2025 — to —
SUNDAY, MARCH 16, 2025 Spring Break: Monday, March 17, 2025 to Sunday, March 30, 2025
STATUTORY HOLIDAYS
UNDERAGE REGISTRATION POLICY
Group programs are not scheduled to take place on statutory holidays or weekends when a statutory holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, and program fees have been calculated accordingly. Exceptions include group fitness classes. Holiday weekend schedules and hours will be posted online at arbutusclub.com.
Children underage for a specific program must receive approval from the Coordinator/Director of that program before registering. If permission is given, underage participants must register with the Recreation Services Desk directly so that we may bypass the established age restriction. Please note that receiving advanced approval does not guarantee a spot in the program.
CLUB COACHING POLICY The use of professional instructors or coaches from outside the Club is not permitted. Only those who have been contracted by the Club may teach on Club premises.
PROGRAM FEES All program and related fees will be billed to your member account. Regular weekly programs will be billed monthly for the program’s duration. Workshops and short-term activities will be billed in the month they occur.
ACTIVITY & SPORT ASSOCIATION FEES Some program areas are required to have members register with their provincial sport governing association for the purpose of insurance coverage to participate in tournaments and events. These fees may be billed seasonally or yearly and are listed on the program pages for which they apply. Some areas also have activity fees, billed seasonally or yearly, and are used to pay for special equipment, gifts, awards, seasonal parties, events, and other program enhancements.
8
PROGRAM APPROVALS Some programs require approval from the Coordinator/Director of the activity area, prior to registering, to ensure participants are at a required level for the class. If a member is incorrectly registered for a class, the Coordinator/Director reserves the right to remove them and recommend another class more suitable for their age or skill level. If an alternative class is not available, the member will be removed from the class.
REGISTRATION WAITLISTS During the initial days of each registration period, it is recommended to make use of the wait list feature if you do not secure your preferred program dates and times. As space becomes available for the program, waitlisted participants will automatically be registered and notified by email. If you no longer want a spot in the class, please remove yourself or your child from the waitlist, or from the class upon receipt of the notification. You may also contact the Registration Desk at registration@arbutusclub.com to cancel any classes or waitlists.
general info MISSED/MAKE-UP CLASSES
ACTIVITY COMMITTEES
If you miss a class for any reason, it is the decision of the Coordinator/Director of each activity area, as to whether they can accommodate a make-up lesson. Most activity areas do not offer this option as it is disruptive to participants registered and is challenging for staff to accommodate.
The success of our activity areas is in large part due to the contributions made by volunteer Committee members. If you would like to participate in one of our Activity Committees, please fill out an application form available at Club Reception or email Megan Gallant at mgallant@arbutusclub.com.
CHILDREN UNDER 8 YEARS A parent/caregiver (16yrs+) must always accompany children under 8 years old while in the Club. You must drop off and pick up your child for all programs as children under 8 years of age will not be released from the program on their own.
ALLERGY AWARE Recreation Services Staff are allergy aware and request that parents do not pack snacks for their children that contain common allergens, such as peanuts. If your child has an allergy that you would like us to be aware of, please contact the Recreation Services Desk and we will notify the instructor.
GUEST POLICY Recreation programs and events are restricted to members only, unless otherwise noted. A limited number of guests may be permitted to attend 25 Year Club events, special youth events and various one-time workshops, if space permits before the event date.
PROGRAM FEEDBACK We welcome your feedback about our programs, camps, services, and events at any time in person, by phone or by email. We also have an evaluation form available online at arbutusclub.com/services/recreation if you would like to complete it anonymously.

GROUP LESSONS For group lesson information, please contact the Registration desk starting at 7:00am on registration day. Having your child signed up for the correct level is important both for the safety of your child and the safety of other children in the program. If your child is registered for the incorrect level, and we do not have room to move them, you will risk forfeiting your space completely. To ensure you are registering in the correct level, please check in with your instructor prior to registration or contact aquatics admin directly to check what level we have for your child on file.
Registration Tip: As all classes are split levels, registering for the correct level is easy! Register for the level they are currently in split with the level above! That way, whether or not completed their current level, they will be in the right class for the upcoming session!
PROGRAM REGISTRATION POLICIES Due to high demand, members are limited to 2 classes registration and 2 waitlisted classes for any Aquatics program with the same name. Contact Sydney Benmore, Aquatics Manager, if interested in participating in more than 2 classes per session.

basketball SPLIT SECOND BASKETBALL Experienced Split-Second Basketball coaches create a fun, challenging and supportive environment to help young athletes find their path through basketball. The goal of the program is for players to have fun, create great habits, and master fundamental basketball skills. Our players do more than just ‘play’ basketball. We break the game down into six Split Second habits and teach the little technical details that matter the most. Then we practice, teach, practice, teach, practice... until great habits are developed.
ERIC BUTLER
Head Basketball Coach eric@splitsecondbasketball.com Eric Butler played basketball at Prince of Wales High School, the University of British Columbia and then professionally in Europe. He has helped thousands of local players develop their skills and build personal confidence from their experience at Split Second.
To successfully participate in class, players must be able to listen to and follow instructions from the coaches. Any players not yet ready to do this will be asked to return to the program once they are able to do so.

Dance ARBUTUS ACADEMY OF DANCE The Arbutus Club Academy of Dance cultivates young dancers, ages 2.5-19 years from their first step into a dance studio through their pre-professional training. Students discover their individual artistic voices in a creative environment with the guidance of an internationally recognized faculty. The personal attention encourages students to mature as dancers, grow as individuals and enrich their passion for the art form.
MARLENE HERSHFIELD Dance Director mhershfield@arbutusclub.com
Marlene Hershfield, A.I.S.T.D, is one of Vancouver’s most respected dance educators. Some of her students have gone on to notable dance careers. She has an extensive background in teaching ballet, jazz and national as well as choreography and has adjudicated at numerous festivals. She brings decades of wisdom, and leadership to the dance program. Marlene is proud of her dynamic team of experienced teachers who are sure to inspire your children to explore and enjoy dance in many exciting forms.
PROGRAM INFORMATION Students enrolling in dance, except preschool classes, adult and combo classes, must make a full-year commitment as classes are progressive and depend on weekly development. Class placement is determined at the teacher’s discretion.
PROGRAM ATTENDANCE While we want our students to have fun, dancing is a commitment. Students registered in dance are expected to remain in the program for the full term. Recital dances are a part of the program, and it is expected that all students will participate in the performance and consider it a team activity with commitment to the overall success of their group. Please give prior notice to your teacher by January 25th if for some reason you will be unable to participate. We ask that parents ensure students arrive on time, attend every class, and inform us in advance by email at mhershfield@arbutusclub.com if they have to miss a class for medical, illness or other reasons.
SMALL CLASSES All classes require at least four participants to run at the listed price. If a class has fewer students, the teacher may offer the class with an additional charge.
BALLET EXAMS Exams motivate both serious and recreational dancers to develop discipline, confidence, and a sense of achievement. Students are examined by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, London, England, in either the Imperial Ballet or Cecchetti Canada. Usually held in June and administered by international examiners, exams involve additional expenses such as additional rehearsals, entry fees and special outfits. Instructors determine which dancers are ready to be examined. Examination candidates must register for at least two ballet classes per week from the grade one level, three to five days a week as levels progress. Students on pointe require a minimum of three ballet lessons per week.

PRE-LEARN TO SKATE (3-5 YRS)
The Learn to Skate program serves as the feeder program for all ice sports and will prepare students for recreational skating, figure skating or hockey. It is not necessary to complete this program before registering in Figure Skating or Minor Hockey. However, parents should consult with the Directors of the area that they wish to enter to see if minimum technical requirements or skill levels have been attained. The program encompasses skill levels from beginner to advanced. Participants will learn forward and backward skating skills, crosscuts, edges, turns and basic spin and jump technique. Attention will be focused on leaning on the edge, weighting on the blade and overall balance and strength. Skaters will move progressively through the system as technique is acquired.

JUNIOR ACHIEVERS (4+ YRS) The Junior Achievers program encompasses 7 levels ranging from intermediate to advanced. Skaters progress from learning the basics of glide, stroke and balance, both forward and backward, to techniques for edges and turns and then to spin, jump and creative movement. This program builds on basics taught previously in Learn To Skate. Skaters will be divided into groups according to ability and may choose to supplement these classes with private lessons. **This program requires all skaters to be in figure skating attire including figure skates, gloves, and tight-fitting athletic clothing; hockey gear (including hockey gloves, knee, elbow, and shin pads) is not recommended as it restricts movement. Helmets are encouraged but not necessarily dependent on skating skill level.
skating JUNIOR & SENIOR SKATING PROGRAM (DIRECTOR APPROVAL) This is an advanced program for skaters advancing from Junior Star Skate that are in the Skate Canada test and competitive system. The syllabus touches on the free skate, interpretive, dance, and skills components of Skate Canada programs. The philosophy will adopt the long-term athlete development “Learn to Train” module. This program incorporates a mix of group enrichment classes and private/ semi-private lessons. It is recommended that Junior/Senior Skaters attend at least 2 sessions per week. Group and private lesson schedules will be determined by the Director. Please contact Kathryn Kang at kkang@arbutusclub.com for more information.

BRIAN HIEBERT
Volleyball Head Coach brian@smashvball.com Brian is passionate about creating positive experiences for children and coaches so that they learn teamwork, humility, and self-confidence through volleyball. Brian fell in love with the game in grade 8 while playing in Port Moody on his school’s beach volleyball court and never slowed down. At 20 years of age, he moved to Toronto to train with the national team and compete on the world stage in beach volleyball. A student of the game, he is now an international referee with a goal to represent Canada at the 2024 and 2028 Olympics. After 20 years of beach volleyball, Brian found his way back to indoor volleyball as a coach at West Point Grey Academy and in 2018 he co-founded Smash Volleyball.

There are no alcoholic beverages allowed in the Shaughnessy (Youth) Room. If young members are habitually leaving behind food and beverage containers and plates, the Youth Coordinator may request that they do not bring food or beverage into the Shaughnessy Room for at least 2 weeks.
MISBEHAVIOUR Misuse, vandalism or damaging equipment or furniture, violent behaviour, offensive/inappropriate language, verbal abuse/discrimination will result in youth being asked to leave. Continued breach of this policy may lead to a temporary ban from the Shaughnessy (Youth) Room by the Youth Coordinator.
PHYSICAL LITERACY PROGRAMS (6-10 YRS) I CAN PLAY! (6-10 YRS) The Arbutus Club I CAN PLAY physical literacy program improves kids’ ability to move on land, in/on water, in air and across ice. Kids learn to move to music, improve their agility, balance, coordination, and speed along with the ability to catch, jump, run, swim, and throw. Most of all the goal of the program is to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity, improve executive function skills, and provide participants with the tools they need to be confident and competent to play a wide range of sports so that they can say… “I CAN PLAY”! The I CAN PLAY program is designed for all levels of ability. If you have no athletic experience this program helps you develop the tools you need to set you on course, or if you play competitive sports this program will help you become a better athlete to improve your sport performance. Please note: This is a coed program and groups will be participating in the program together. We have separate registrations to ensure that participation is balanced between boys and girls.
