President’s Letter

Dear Members,

Welcome to summer! The Club takes on a new energy this time of year, with the Rooftop Patio open, fun-filled summer camps, and relaxing on the pool patio. In July, we're adding Olympic-themed activities for all ages in honour of the Paris Olympics, highlighted on page 28.

Don't miss our limited edition 60th Anniversary Memorabilia! I’m loving my navy sweatshirt and Yeti water bottle, and the canvas tote is ideal for summer adventures. Visit The Shoppe to view the complete collection.

Our committees are in full swing, diligently working on their mandates. We have established a new Ad-Hoc Charitable Foundation Committee, tasked with supporting management in creating a structured program for charitable giving and community outreach initiatives. The committee’s mandates will align with The Club's guiding principles, focusing on enriching the lives of families, creating meaningful memories, and building community. More information will be available this fall.

The Long-Range Planning and Development Committee is making excellent progress with the preliminary master planning process. Acton Ostry Architecture and the Resource Planning Group have met with management to understand The Club’s operations and member use. Our traffic consulting firm was onsite in early June to collect data on traffic counts, parking occupancy, and conduct an intercept survey. We have also installed an improved traffic counter in the parkade to better understand our peak time parking demand. GGA Partners, experts in private club master planning across North America, have been engaged as The Club’s membership engagement consultants. They will conduct focus groups and distribute a club-wide member survey in the coming months to understand members' desires and vision for The Club’s future. Look for more information soon about how you can participate in this important process.

As we address the aging tennis building, we must plan wisely to optimize the use of this part of the property for the next thirty years and beyond. Reflecting on our 60th anniversary, I’m reminded of our Founding Members' vision to create a special place where children and adults alike could be active, connect, and have fun. We aim to honour that legacy by not only meeting our current needs but also dreaming big for future generations.

The Ad-Hoc Membership Committee has reconvened to re-visit The Club’s target number of members by analyzing current and projected demographics, occupancy rates, program and event data, and strategies for managing peak time traffic. They will also recommend the maximum number of new memberships that should be available in 2025 and determine the most equitable and efficient method for accepting applications. Additionally, the committee will review The

Club's existing Guest Policy to understand its impact on occupancy and the overall member experience.

Knowing that many of you will be away over the summer, I take this time now to encourage you to attend two exciting events this fall, both a little extra special to commemorate our 60th Anniversary. The StreetFest Welcome Back Party on Wednesday, September 4, is a post-Labour Day bash featuring live music, a Venice Beach-style vendor boardwalk, kids' activities, and BBQ. It's a free, all-ages, members-only event that requires no registration.

Oktoberfest! The 60th Anniversary Festival on Friday, September 27, is the ultimate Oktoberfest celebration. This 19+ event will feature DJ Hasselhoff, The Grand Polka Band, traditional Munich lager Paulaner, and delicious food stations. Tickets are just $40.

I hope to see you all there. Wishing everyone a wonderful summer break!

Warm regards,

Vice President Board Member

2020 RAMON SOLINAS

Treasurer

Markus Franiek

Club Member Since: 1999

Secretary

Board Member Since: 2022

Board Member Since: 2020 KATIE HENDERSON

Profession: Owner of Perspective, a property and finance investment and advisory business

Current Committee: Long Range Planning and Development

In what areas of The Club do you spend the most time?

Besides all our food venues, wellness area, Fitness Centre, and in the summer, our tennis courts, I like to talk mountain biking and plan our next ride in the office of our Fitness and Personal Training Manager, Rob Gibb. I also enjoy popping by the office of our Director of Food and Beverage, Don Robinson, to hear the latest on wine tastings and offerings.

What have you learned during your time in the Committee System?

As a 10+ year Finance Committee member and new Long Range Planning Committee member, I am always appreciative of the dedication, collaboration, and spectrum of talent and experience our committee members and management provide. This has been invaluable in leading our Club to consistently make thoughtful and informed decisions.

What is one of your fondest Club memories?

When my wife Janet and I would invite my late, non-member parents to The Fireside for dinners, we would arrive together at reception. Throughout The Club, staff would always greet my parents with “Nice of you to have your son and daughter-in-law join you,” as though we were their guests. I am always fondly reminded of those moments when I enter The Fireside reception.

A Blend of Experience, Dedication, and Community Spirit.

Clara Ferguson

Club Member Since: 2004

Profession: Lawyer

Current Committee: Planning and Facilities Committee

What is one of your fondest Club memories?

There are a lot of them. In our family, we’ve had everything from birthday parties for 5-year-olds to 75-year-olds, weddings, and celebrations of life. But probably my favourite was watching my daughter ‘graduate’ from The Arbutus Club Preschool!

What do you appreciate most about The Club?

It’s the little things—from grabbing dinner after picking up my daughter from an activity, to running into friends in the hallway, and all the staff working hard to always make it feel like home. It truly is a special place.

In what ways has The Club enriched your life?

First and foremost is the safe space it provides for our children. My daughter has basically grown up here and now hangs out with her friends and attends activities on her own. Then there are the friendships you have among members and the commitment and care the staff provide. We are lucky to have it!

Club Member Since: 1997

Profession: Retired Associate Judge of B.C. Supreme Court

Current Committee: Membership Committee

What have you learned during your time in the Committee System?

While I have only served two years as a committee member, I have learned that all members of the committee are fair in making decisions and diligent in doing their homework, especially when preparing to tackle some challenging mandates.

What is one of your fondest Club memories?

Some of my fondest memories at The Club include watching my daughter become a fearless diver, participating in the karate demonstration with Sensei Alice, and achieving a high level of proficiency in her respective activities.

What do you appreciate most about The Club?

I definitely appreciate The Club as a place of refuge from the many other matters that require attention. The positive interactions with new friends, including staff, that I have made through my membership have been especially meaningful since retirement.

Meet the Team

Chimmey Ng’uni

children ' s centre MA n A ger

We are thrilled to announce Chimmey Ng'uni as our new Children's Centre Manager. Chimmey finds joy in nature, spending time with loved ones, and exploring new places, which enriches her approach to life and work.

Chimmey values organisation and the satisfaction of accomplishing tasks at work. Her favourite trip was to Zambia, where she experienced the breathtaking Victoria Falls and felt a deep connection with nature. This passion for exploration and learning is an asset as she steps into her new role at The Club.

Inspired by a family legacy of educators, Chimmey discovered her passion for teaching early on and is driven to make a positive impact on young minds. She is excited to join our dedicated team, meet families, and contribute her expertise to the Children's Centre.

We are confident that Chimmey will be a valuable addition to our team, bringing enthusiasm, and a fresh perspective to The Arbutus Club!

Jennifer Lee

children ' s pr O gr AM le A der

We are delighted to announce that Jennifer Lee has joined The Arbutus Club as our new Children’s Program Leader. Jennifer finds happiness in her work and loves the simple joys of life, making her a perfect fit for our team.

Motivated and energized by positive interactions with children, parents, and coworkers, Jennifer brings her bright energy to our programs. Her recent trip to Los Angeles stands out as her favourite adventure, as she cherishes travelling and spending quality time with loved ones.

Jennifer’s love for upbeat music reflects her energetic and cheerful attitude, which she brings into every aspect of her work. As the new Children’s Program Leader, Jennifer is dedicated to creating meaningful and memorable experiences for the children in our programs.

Our incredible staff are hardworking people who embody the motto “Putting Families

Harsimran “Honey” Brar receiver

Meet the latest addition to our Receiving team, Harsimran “Honey” Brar. Honey brings a blend of enthusiasm, efficiency, and a love for teamwork and technology to his new role.

Honey enjoys playing sports and seeing happy faces at work, which fuels his positive attitude and dedication. His favourite trip was to Banff, Alberta, where he enjoyed beautiful landscapes and cherished memories with his wife. Whether on the soccer field or tinkering with technology, Honey's passions drive him towards excellence.

To unwind, Honey enjoys fixing things, watching movies, or playing games. His proactive approach and diverse interests promise to make a lasting impact in his role as a receiver.

We are excited to welcome Honey to our team and look forward to the great contributions he will bring to The Arbutus Club!

We are excited to introduce Colin Bassett, our new Maintenance Engineer. Colin's dedication, skill, and passion for craftsmanship and continuous learning make him a valuable addition to our team. In his free time, Colin enjoys learning about history, playing soccer, and spending time with his dog, Peanut. To stay active, he practices yoga, plays soccer weekly, and takes Peanut on long walks to pet stores, the beach, or Pacific Spirit Regional Park.

Colin’s favourite trip was backpacking in South America, where he met incredible people and visited the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. His love for adventure and exploration complements his professional skills, making him a well-rounded and dynamic team member.

We are thrilled to have Colin join our team and look forward to the expertise and enthusiasm he will bring to The Arbutus Club!

As many of you already know, Connie Smith has decided to step down as the Children’s Centre Manager after fifteen incredible years in the position.

Now, don’t fret! Connie, or ‘Ms. Connie’ as she is affectionately called by the children in her classes, is staying at The Club but has decided to transition into a teaching role. This hard decision came after Connie was offered a role at her church, an opportunity she has always dreamed about but knew that managing both roles was not feasible.

Connie started with The Arbutus Club in 2009 and brought with her a fresh and positive energy. Her dedication to the Children’s Centre, its families, and her staff is unparalleled. Anyone who knows Connie knows that she will always put our families first and that her compassion, empathy, and kindness have made her a crucial part of the success of the Children’s Centre. Her caring

leadership qualities have made her a beloved figure among children and their parents. Members knew they could always bring their concerns to Ms. Connie, and they would be addressed with the utmost care and compassion.

Under Connie’s leadership, the Children’s Centre has grown and gained a reputation as a true ‘home away from home’ for our smallest members and their families. She has guided our Centre through challenging times, like renovations and licensing amendments, and has been there for all the happy memories too. Her innovation has provided many special opportunities for the Children’s Centre, such as recording sessions with children’s music artist Will Stroet, visits from local firefighters and police officers to teach children about safety, and holiday celebrations galore.

While we are so excited about Connie’s new opportunity, her departure from her manager role leaves us with a mix of sadness and gratitude as we reflect upon the profound effect she has had on everyone in the Children’s Centre.

Now drafted to The Arbutus Club family, we are pleased to introduce Zach Hamill, our new Director of Hockey.

Zach is a former professional hockey player with extensive experience playing and coaching hockey players of all ages. Zach’s passion for hockey emerged at the age of three when he played association hockey in Port Coquitlam until the age of 16. In 2003, he was drafted third overall by the Everett Silvertips. During his five years in the WHL, he earned, and still holds, numerous offensive franchise records. In 2007, Zach was drafted 8th overall by the Boston Bruins and played 14 years of professional hockey in the NHL, AHL, KHL and European leagues.

In recent years, Zach has been coaching the HPL Flyers AAA and has served as

Head Coach for various Flyers teams from U6 to U13, winning provincial championships along the way. He has also been coaching the Vancouver Vipers since 2021. In addition to coaching teams, Zach has been an Elite Level Hockey Skills and Development coach for the past three years. Zach’s goal as the Director of Hockey is to ensure that all players feel they belong, believe they have a purpose, and know they are capable of success. By cultivating a safe space to learn and grow, he believes all youth can reach their full potential and deepen their love for the game. We are confident that Zach will help our hockey program continue to flourish and foster a positive environment for all participants. Please join us in welcoming Zach, who will officially start on Tuesday, July 9.

In May, our members joined gardener Tina for a walk through of the herb garden.

During the guided tour, members discovered what had been planted this spring from seeds and explored our existing perennial herbs and plants. The event included discussions about the Herb Program with Chef Couzelis. Tina and Chef have collaborated to create a wish list of herbs requested by Chef, which Tina began growing indoors from seeds earlier this spring. Fresh herbs will be delivered to the kitchen weekly during the growing season for our in-house menus.

During the tour, Tina covered various topics, including seed starting at the beginning of the season, location and sunlight requirements for plants, and a bit about succession planting for a prolonged and successful season at home. She also touched on companion planting and its benefits for your garden. The walk through concluded with a wonderful Q&A session for members. It was a fantastic event where members enjoyed the sunshine and picked up a few gardening tips.

Members each took home a complimentary basil plant to enjoy in their own gardens or kitchens. Tina had started these plants indoors from seeds.

Make sure to look out for Tina's next event on the Rooftop, where we will see how far the garden has come, discuss mid-season maintenance, drying herbs, and upcoming seasonal tasks.

Members

were greeted with a complimentary mocktail made from fresh fruit blended with mint from our garden.

This spring, The Arbutus Club transformed into a vibrant stage for the annual showcase of The Arbutus Dance Academy, Stars of Tomorrow.

The Arbutus Dance Academy's performance captivated all who attended as we celebrated the 60th anniversary of The Club as well as the culmination of months of rigorous training and artistic exploration by the students and instructors. This year offered a breathtaking journey through a vibrant array of dance styles and eras, each piece more impressive than the last.

The audience's reactions were a testament to the success of the event. Marlene Hershfield, Director of Dance, noted that the event celebrated the artistry, spirit, and camaraderie that define The Arbutus Club.

We would like to congratulate the following graduating students of The Arbutus Club Dance Program: Marlowe Forst, Zara Hill, Gillian Rose and Chloe Ross.

Dance Program Options

The dance program offers both competitive and non-competitive streams for students, allowing them to choose between two different paths within the program. A dance year can be incredibly busy, filled with classes, rehearsals, performances, and competitions. We are dedicated to meeting each student's unique needs and helping them achieve their full potential.

Should you have any questions or need assistance with class placement, please do not hesitate to reach out to Marlene Hershfield at mhershfield@arbutusclub.com.

AT THE CLUB

The Olympics, with its rich history and universal appeal, has always been a symbol of global unity, sportsmanship, and cultural diversity.

JUL 29 - AUG 2

As the world turns its eyes to Paris this summer, The Arbutus Club looks to capture the spirit of the Olympics by bringing members together to celebrate this international festival of sports and foster our Olympic spirit! Let’s look at how some areas of our Club are celebrating the Olympics this summer and how you can take part!

Our summer camps are excited to celebrate the Olympics during the week of July 29 to August 2. This exciting week promises to be filled with joy, learning, and athletic endeavours.

Our youngest campers in our Gymnastics Funtastic Summer Camp will leap into the world of the Olympics, discovering various sports through athletic activities, engaging crafts, and fun-themed games. They will learn about the history and significance of the Olympics while developing new skills and fostering a love for all sports. The week will end with a Mini Olympics along with a special medal ceremony.

For our older junior athletes in the Olympic Spirit Week combo class, the excitement intensifies as they take on the challenge of creating their own gymnastic routines.

They will also have the opportunity to explore two new Olympic sports this year: rock climbing and breakdancing. These activities are designed to push their boundaries, enhance their athletic abilities, and inspire a passion for sports. The fun continues with aquatic sports in the pool and team sports in the gymnasium. We can't wait to see our campers thrive and embrace the true essence of the Olympic spirit.

For more information about these two camps, contact Chloe Ekkebus at cekkebus@arbutusclub.com or Nicole McNaught at nmcnaught@arbutusclub.com.

The Fitness Centre will be celebrating the thrill of the Olympic Games with “The FC Games.” During the games, our fitness attendant team will introduce a series of engaging physical challenges designed to ignite enthusiasm for fitness through the excitement of the Olympics. We want to inspire and motivate all members to elevate their fitness levels!

Our challenges will mirror the diversity of events in the Olympics, covering various aspects of physical fitness. Whether it's sprinting, weightlifting, or rowing, there will be something for everyone.

Members can choose to participate in any or all challenges, explore their talents, and discover new areas of fitness. These challenges will be offered throughout the summer Olympic weeks. Here are some challenge samples:

Dead-Hang

Walkathon (Step Counter)

Cyclemania (Total kilometers)

Sprint Row 500 meters

FOSTERING FUTURE LEADERS + BUILDING COMMUNITY

Volunteering is more than just an act of kindness; it supports and enriches communities while fostering personal growth for young individuals. As the next generation of leaders, young volunteers bring energy, fresh perspectives, and innovation. The Youth Volunteer Program at The Arbutus Club aims to help young members gain experience and give back to their Arbutus community.

Since being reintroduced in Winter 2023, the Youth Volunteer Program has grown from two participants to nearly twenty. These teens have helped in departments such as skating, the Children’s Centre, dance, the youth department, swim team, and more!

One teen who has been with the Youth Volunteer Team since the

beginning is Kate Louie. Kate started volunteering at The Arbutus Club in 2022 and has helped with many amazing events, such as the Youth Room Halloween Party, Snowball Bash, Dance Classes, Spring Carnival, Year-End Party, and continues to find more roles to help! Since starting to volunteer, Kate has earned close to sixty hours to put towards her Grade 12 requirements to graduate.

Kate’s favourite part of volunteering is building relationships with the young children: “Kids recognize me at events and in the hallways, and I’m thrilled to have made a lasting impression on them.” Through volunteering, she has discovered a passion for working with young children. This experience has inspired her to pursue a career in teaching after she graduates from high school.

Interested in Volunteering?

As this program grows, the Shaughnessy Youth Room continues to look for new ways to expand volunteer opportunities and offer more options and areas to volunteer in The Club. The Youth Volunteer Program aims to give teens work experience and help them gain volunteer hours for high school.

If your child is interested in volunteering with the Youth Volunteer Program, please email Chloe Ekkebus at cekkebus@arbutusclub.com for more information or pick up a volunteer information form at Reception today.

NIGHT SQUASH LEAGUE

Celebrating 25 Years of Squash and Community

The Love of the Game

For a quarter of a century, our Club's Wednesday Night Squash League has been the highlight of the week for many Squash enthusiasts. Running for twenty five years, the league has become more than just a competition—it's a community event where players of all levels come together to enjoy the sport they love.

The league is split into two sessions: the fall session from September to December and the spring session from January to April. Each session brings its own excitement and challenges, culminating in the crowning of a division champion. This past spring, the coveted Division 1 title was claimed by none other than Nelson Lai, whose consistent performance and sportsmanship set a high standard for all participants. The Division 2 through 4 winners were Lawrence Chee, Stephanie Jameson, and Lindsay McCaffrey. Great job everyone!

The Wednesday Night League offers a fantastic way for players to keep their squash skills sharp throughout the year. It balances competitive play with social interaction, ensuring players stay motivated and engaged. The league's enduring success reflects the dedication of both its organisers and participants. The matches are scheduled, starting at 6:30 pm and run until the last game begins at 8:00 pm. This dynamic scheduling keeps the league vibrant and engaging, with players eagerly anticipating their next match.

One of the most beloved traditions of our Wednesday Night League is the beer cart, which rolls in post-matches, turning the competitive atmosphere into a social gathering. This mobile refreshment station is stocked with a variety of beverages, providing

the perfect setting for players to unwind and share stories from their games. It’s not just about the beverages; it’s about the camaraderie that develops when players gather around, clinking glasses, and discussing their thrilling rallies and near-misses.

Thank You Michael

Behind the scenes, member Michael Bingham has been the driving force keeping this amazing league running smoothly. His dedication to organizing and managing the league is unmatched. Michael's commitment ensures that every detail, from scheduling matches to coordinating the windups is meticulously handled. His passion for squash and community spirit makes our league the success that it is.

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our Wednesday Night Squash League, we look forward to many more years of exhilarating matches, endless laughs, and the unbreakable bonds of our squash community. Whether you are a seasoned player or new to the sport, there’s always a place for you here—on the court and around the beer cart. Cheers to squash, community, and the love of the game!

CELEBRATING A SUCCESSFUL SEASON

We are thrilled to present a recap of our tennis season, which has been nothing short of extraordinary. From exhilarating tournaments to the introduction of talented coaches, our tennis program has flourished in every aspect. Here are the highlights of our successful season:

Events and Tournaments:

Our Singles Club Championships ran successfully in April 2024 , with Lucy MacPherson and Sebastian Dee continuing their winning ways as Club Champions. The Doubles and Mixed Doubles Championships took place in November 2023 and were a huge success. We thank all our participants and congratulate the champions.

Our Junior Club Championships was held in June for the first time since 2019, and we hosted over fifty participants! Thank you to those who came down to cheer on our young competitors.

We loved hosting many other events, such as our Valentine’s Day Couples Tournament and Christmas Exhibition, which brought out so many of our amazing members.

New Coaching Team:

We are delighted to welcome several new coaches to our team, each bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to our program:

Coach Kyrylo Kryvchun: With a background in NCAA Division 1 collegiate tennis and a passion for player development, Kyrylo has already made a significant impact on our Junior Program as Head of Junior Development. His hard work has led to being recognized by Tennis Canada as the 2024 recipient of the Gary Caron Scholarship Award. This award acknowledges the best young coach in the country. Congratulations to Kyrylo, welcome to the team, and keep up the great work!

Coach Angus Whitefield: Angus comes to us from London, England, as an LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) Level 1 coach and brings a wealth of experience in developing players of all levels.

Coach Bari Bridgewater: Bari comes to us with years of experience in the private club sector, and we’re excited to have him join the team.

Enhanced Training Programs:

In addition to our talented coaching staff, we have expanded our training programs to cater to players of all ages and skill levels. From intensive clinics to personalized coaching sessions, we are dedicated to providing the resources necessary for every player to reach their full potential.

Community Engagement:

Beyond the court, our tennis community has thrived through social events. Whether it's our US Open Social in the summer or a new social added by Coach Kyrylo named Live Ball, our members have been treated to some incredible opportunities.

Looking Ahead:

As we reflect on the achievements of this season, we are filled with excitement for the future of our tennis program. With continued dedication, innovation, and unwavering support from our members, we are confident that the upcoming season will be even more remarkable.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our coaches, staff, volunteers, and, most importantly, our members for their contributions to our tennis community. Together, we have created a season to remember, and eagerly anticipate the journey ahead.

Exciting Changes Ahead for Pilates

With the influx of member participation in Pilates, we tried a few different things to get more members into as many classes as possible. One way we did this was by taking our three-month seasons and splitting them into shorter blocks of time. While this has many benefits, this past year has shown our members prefer longer commitments to their Pilates practice so starting this fall, we will be shifting back to seasonal sessions: September to December, January to March, April to June, and then two separate sessions for each summer month (July, August). This also means one registration and cancellation date unless you are registering your teen in the Pilates for Teens sessions.

We also implemented a full year of Focus Classes, allowing members to ‘drop-in’ to class and train a few extra times in addition to sessional classes. We will be putting these classes on pause and utilizing those times for classes and privates starting in the fall.

What else is new?

With the success for the pilot Pilates for Teens class, we are adding an additional one in the fall: Wednesdays at 4:00 pm and Thursdays at 4:00 pm. We will also be bringing back the Pilates for Tennis class on Saturdays at 8:00 am –the perfect complement to your current tennis training regimen. Our Beginner-Only classes were successful, and you can expect an additional one on Thursdays at 7:00 pm.

Should Kinstretch Be Part Of Your Training This Fall?

“You can’t move where you can’t move.”
Dr. Andreo Spina, co-creator of Functional Range Systems

Before we delve into Kinstretch, let's reflect on Dr. Spina's insightful quote. What does it mean to be unable to move, and how does this restriction develop over time? Consider this: everything we aspire to accomplish hinges on our ability to move. Interaction with the world, whether through vibrating our vocal cords to speak or squatting to lift an object, fundamentally relies on movement. Given its crucial role in our daily functions, why does our body lose mobility over time? Wouldn’t our brain, recognizing the importance of movement, strive to preserve our ability to move efficiently?

Interestingly, while movement is vital, our brain prioritizes survival above all. Ensuring survival enhances our chances of passing on DNA to future generations, thus preserving our species. This survival mechanism emphasizes energy conservation, guaranteeing that energy is available to meet survival demands during challenging times.

Muscle and connective tissues are energy-intensive. When we cease using these tissues, our brain reallocates that energy to more critical functions, ceasing maintenance of the unused tissues. This phenomenon underlies the “use it or lose it” principle. Conversely, regular use of tissues signals their importance to our nervous system, which then allocates resources for their maintenance. This dynamic underscores the principle of "use it to gain it."

This interplay is captured by the “Law of Accommodation.” Our regular actions take precedence over potential actions we do not engage in. Whether we spend eight hours a day sitting or hours powerlifting with bench presses, deadlifts, and squats, this accommodation shapes both scenarios. The individual who sits extensively becomes proficient at sitting but less efficient at activities outside this posture. Similarly, the powerlifter becomes efficient at the three movements but less adept at tasks beyond these exercises.

Enter the Kinstretch system and its training philosophy. Kinstretch is a group fitness movement enhancement system designed to develop maximum body control, flexibility, and usable ranges of motion. This system adopts a tissue-specific training approach, beginning with the internal system and working outward. Instead of focusing on “performing a better squat,” Kinstretch aims to “build a better hip, knee, or ankle,” thereby facilitating improved squats by enhancing the strength and capacity of the joints.

Our muscles and connective tissues facilitate joint movement. However, the joint itself, along with its “workspace” determined by the “joint capsule” (the deepest tissue closest to the joint), is central to our movement potential. No matter the muscle mass, if the joint capsule is compromised, our movement will be limited. Connective tissue, located nearest to the joint capsule, has poor circulation and only receives adequate blood flow or strength stimulus when stretched to its full length, a condition often unmet during typical activities.

By adopting an internal perspective, Kinstretch prioritizes training the deepest tissue first and then working outward. This method respects muscle tissue's role within the continuum of trainable body tissues.

• We can train our joint capsule

• We can train our workspace

• We can train our connective tissue

• We can train our muscles

• We can train our nervous system

Kinstretch addresses a critical gap in conventional training by stimulating virtually untrained tissues. This is beneficial for both high-level athletes preparing for competition and older adults seeking to enhance their quality of life.

Traditional training has emphasized muscles and the nervous system, often neglecting joint workspace and connective tissues. This oversight is evident in athletic injuries, where connective tissue failures are more common than muscle failures. Improving workspace and connective tissue is low-hanging fruit that can provide a competitive edge and enhance life quality. Improved range of motion grants access to new, untrained muscle tissue, which can then be developed to boost strength, movement quality, and injury resistance.

Kinstretch exercises are scalable to individual levels, making it an inclusive group fitness system. Individuals with varying health and athleticism levels can all train their shoulder’s internal rotation, adjusting to their unique range of motion for optimal training responses.

Kinstretch is essentially a practice dedicated to understanding and improving your body’s unique movement capabilities. It allows you to share this journey with others on a similar path, enhancing body awareness and control to enrich all future experiences.

Join us this fall for Kinstretch on Mondays and Wednesdays, and uncover your hidden movement potential.

The Big Island welcomed five Arbutus Club master swimmers as they embarked on a seven day journey along the Kona Coast.

Hawaii beckons adventurers and water enthusiasts to its shores with an invitation to explore its volcanic coastlines and vibrant marine life. The island, known for its diverse landscapes, offers a unique opportunity for swimmers to immerse themselves in the clear, tropical waters of the North Pacific Ocean.

Swimming along the Kona Coast, one is greeted by the sight of black lava rock formations, remnants of the island’s fiery origins. The waters there are not just a swimmer’s playground but a sanctuary teeming with life. From the majestic sea turtles to the playful spinner dolphins, every stroke offers a chance to encounter these marine inhabitants up close.

The underwater topography is a mosaic of coral reefs, providing a home to a kaleidoscope of fish and other sea creatures. As you glide over these natural wonders, the world beneath the waves reveals itself, offering a silent yet vibrant spectacle that captivates the senses.

For those who seek to test their endurance, the Big Island’s waters also trace the path of the iconic Kona Ironman® swimming course. It’s a challenge that calls to the bold, to experience the same currents and tides that have tested the world’s best triathletes.

Navigating the open waters requires skill and confidence, and swimmers are accompanied by expert guides who ensure safety and offer insights into the aquatic realm. With their guidance, swimmers of varying abilities can find the right balance between challenge and enjoyment.

Beyond the physical journey, there’s a spiritual aspect to swimming in Hawaii. It’s about connecting with the 'aina (land) and kai (sea), embracing the aloha spirit, and leaving with a sense of fulfillment that extends beyond the physical distances covered.

A swimming holiday on the Big Island is more than just a series of swims; it’s an adventure that stays with you. It’s about the stories you’ll tell, the friendships you’ll forge, and the memories you’ll create, all set against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Five of our master Arbutus Rays swimmers took on a very special kind of trip at the end of April. Anita Ghatak, Deanne Schweitzer, Genieve Burley, Jennifer Wick, and Summer Wilson embarked on a Swim Trek to the Big Island of Hawaii.

The trip had them meeting with other international swimmers to swim 5km per day in different areas of the waters off Kona. Some highlights were the pelagic swim (5 miles offshore - 2 miles deep) where they had the incredible opportunity to swim with pilot whales and white-tipped sharks, snorkelling and swimming in the Captain Cook Bay, and swimming the 3.9km Kona Ironman official race course.

After honing their skills with The Arbutus Club Swim Team, they got the incredible chance to put them to the test in the open ocean. It was not only a rewarding experience for them in this new environment, but they also got to bond with fellow swimmers from around the world who shared the same passion.

In celebration of our club's 60th anniversary, we crafted retro-inspired, limited edition apparel for the entire family.

As you turn into The Club’s parking lot from Nanton Ave, you are greeted by the wooden Arbutus Club sign, proudly displaying The Club’s past logo. This iconic blue and teal emblem inspired a limited edition collection celebrating 60 years since The Club first opened its doors. The merchandise, available at The Shoppe since June, captures the essence of our storied past while looking forward to a vibrant future.

Each piece was crafted with genuine care and collaboration from our dedicated team members, ensuring high quality and thoughtful design. Reflecting our motto, "Putting Families First," the collection offers something for every member of the family. From stylish apparel to timeless accessories, these pieces are a testament to the values and traditions that have defined The Club for six decades. We are excited to see our members, young and old, proudly wear and enjoy these anniversary pieces for years to come, symbolizing the strong community and family spirit at the heart of The Club.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Grant Taylor, Ashlee Golding, Jenna Wengle, Isla Crockett, Isobel Crockett, and Takumi Tsukada-Leung, who graciously agreed to model the collection and participate in a photoshoot with our Communications team. Their enthusiasm and support helped bring the spirit of the collection to life.

As the crisp fall air ushers in a new school year, The Shoppe is your ultimate destination for cozy athleisure and stylish back-to-school essentials.
