President’s Letter

Dear Members,

Welcome Spring! It is so great to experience longer days and brighter skies. As we conclude another productive Board term, I am grateful for our Board of Directors and the House and Activity Committees. Their contributions alongside management have been central to our Club's seamless operation and numerous successes this year. From executing the 2024 Member application process, auditing the long-term needs of the Natatorium (pool), and conducting our annual audit to creating memorable experiences at events like the inaugural Arbutus Club Squash Open, the team has hit their mandates for the term.

This year, we bid farewell to two directors: Darren Turecki and Harv Phandal Dhanda. On behalf of the Board, I want to express our gratitude for their dedication and passion for The Club.

I must also express my appreciation for Alan Bailey, our outgoing Past President. Over the past decade, Alan has devoted countless hours as a Committee member, Director, President, and Past-president, significantly contributing to our Club's success. Thank you, Alan. You will be missed.

A special acknowledgment goes to the Long Range Planning and Development Committee for their diligent work in the Request for Proposals (RFP) process for master planning services, setting the stage for our Club's next growth phase. This process, aimed at shaping our Club's future, will require significant participation from our members. I’m thrilled to announce that Acton Ostry Architects will guide us through this journey. Their innovative work, depth of experience, and leadership team align perfectly with our quest for 'Putting Families First.' We look forward to initiating research and analysis on the tennis building and its surroundings this year, with more updates to follow.

Volunteering at our Club enriches our community and offers personal growth and connection opportunities. If you've yet to contribute your time and talents, I welcome exploring involvement in an Activity or House Committee.

We celebrate The Club's 60th Anniversary this year, and preparations are underway to mark this significant occasion in our history.

Stay tuned for more information on upcoming events and how to obtain limited edition Club merchandise.

We're also excited about our mobile app's upcoming refresh. For details on the new features launching this month, see page 14.

I invite you to the Annual General Meeting in the Strathcona Room on Thursday, April 18, at 6:00 pm. Our Treasurer, Hollis Bromley, will discuss our strong financial performance in 2023, and I will deliver my closing Presidential Report. This meeting will also be an opportunity to meet the incoming 2024/25 Executive and Board members. Your participation would be greatly valued.

It's with great pleasure that I extend my best wishes to the incoming President, Brooke Moss. Working closely with Brooke, I've witnessed her exceptional leadership qualities, strategic decision-making skills, and comprehensive approach to Club matters.

As the saying goes, ‘Time flies when you're having fun.’ Thank you for the privilege of serving as your Club President for the past two years.

With our new CEO in place, the next phase of our Long Range Plan underway, and an outstanding Board of Directors, we've accomplished a lot in keeping our Club well-managed. I have enjoyed engaging with many of you and collaborating with our Board, management, and staff.

I'm moving on with a profound sense of pride in our Club, our values, and the incredible group of people who come to work every day to make our experience excellent.

Last but certainly not least, I'd like to thank my wife, Tracy, and my daughters, Sophia and Lauren, for their support and for allowing me 'time away' to fulfill my commitment to The Club.

Warm regards,

Memories Made Wearing Purple for International Women’s Day

Tennis has been intricately woven into The Club’s identity since its inception, fostering athleticism and camaraderie over the years. The sport offers a dynamic blend of competition and recreation, making it a beloved activity among our vibrant player community. Whether through spirited matches, coaching programs, or social events, tennis continues to inspire passion and connection, embodying sportsmanship and excellence.

We have unearthed some memories from our photo archive collection, featuring a variety of tennis tournaments that took place at The Arbutus Club in the early 1980s. Our tennis community has always represented a wide age range, from young beginners to lifelong enthusiasts, exemplifying our motto of "Putting Families First."

Meet the Team

Nitshti Zerezghi first c OO k

A decade ago, Nitshti made the life-changing decision to immigrate to Canada from Eritrea, East Africa, marking a significant turning point in her life. Joining The Arbutus Club team in December 2017 initially as a dishwasher, Nitshti swiftly showcased her culinary prowess, ascending to the role of Second Cook within a few months. Her journey culminated in April 2024, when she attained the esteemed position of First Cook.

Nitshti accredits much of her success to the steadfast support of Executive Chef Michael Couzelis, whose recognition of her potential and unwavering encouragement propelled her growth within The Club. Expressing gratitude for his mentorship, Nitshti reflects, “I am profoundly thankful to Chef; his belief in me fostered my professional development and advancement within the team.”

In addition to her culinary talents, Nitshti draws strength from her religious beliefs, actively participating in a Bible group for solace and connection. Before settling in Canada, she endured four years and six months as a refugee in Sudan, where her passion for cooking provided comfort. Her signature dish, lamb stew with flatbread (injera), became a culinary refuge during tumultuous times.

Nitshti’s story embodies triumph over adversity, fueled by diligence, perseverance, and the support of a nurturing community. The Arbutus Club is privileged to have Nitshti as a valued team member.

Celebrating Spring’s Arrival in Our Gardens

As the vibrant colors of spring begin to emerge, it’s a testament to the careful planning and nurturing hands of Gardener Tina, who diligently planted bulbs back in the Fall. Now, we eagerly await the spectacle as these blooms burst forth in a symphony of hues.

Exciting Developments in the Club Gardens

This growing season heralds a transformation in The Club’s garden landscape under the creative vision of Gardener Tina. Departing from traditional annual displays, Tina’s design incorporates a harmonious blend of perennials and annuals, promising not only a visual feast but also sustainable longevity for members to savour across the seasons. The philosophy of “crawl, walk, run” aptly captures the journey of perennials, starting modestly in their first year before flourishing in subsequent seasons, enriching the garden with layers of interest and delightful pops of colour.

Collaborating with Chef Michael Couzelis, the rooftop garden has undergone a verdant expansion, with an abundance of herbs and flowers meticulously cultivated to elevate the culinary delights of The Club’s kitchen. From seedling to table, these additions promise a fusion of freshness and flavour, embodying the essence of farm-to-table cuisine.

Creating a Pollinator Paradise

Amidst the buzz of excitement, there’s a concerted effort to cultivate an environment that welcomes and sustains pollinators. Recognizing the invaluable role they play in ecosystem health, Gardener Tina shares insights on nurturing these vital creatures.

switch up y O ur g A rdening h A bits

Beyond bees, an array of pollinators—from bats and beetles to birds and butterflies— contribute to the intricate dance of pollination. Embracing a paradigm shift, traditional gardening practices are re-imagined to accommodate these vital allies. By allowing untamed spaces and minimizing chemical interventions, the garden becomes a sanctuary where pollinators thrive.

v A riety is key

Intentional planting becomes a cornerstone in attracting and supporting pollinators. Gardener Tina emphasizes the importance of diversity in flower shapes, colours, and sizes to cater to the unique preferences of different species. Thoughtful considerations, such as minimizing nighttime lighting and incorporating insect-friendly blooms, ensure a hospitable habitat for these winged visitors.

Central to the pollinator-friendly ethos is the inclusion of native plants tailored to the Pacific Maritime ecozone. With a nod to ecological stewardship, Gardener Tina recommends sourcing seeds from reputable suppliers like Westcoast Seeds, ensuring a bountiful harvest of both beauty and biodiversity.

A Night of Great Music and Great Company

The idea of hosting an open mic night was born out of desire to create a warm and inviting space for members to share their musical talents with one another. While we were not certain what to expect running this event for the first time, the talent of all the open mic participants absolutely blew our minds.

Six members participated in the open mic portion of the event, performing everything from Coldplay to Sinatra to some good ole’ country music. The audience was treated with magical performances that had the crowd humming, clapping, and smiling all night long.

“I was so pleased with the level of talent, and the warmth and enthusiasm of the audience. I couldn’t have imagined a better outcome. All the audience seemed to walk away with smiles and the musicians and performers had a blast.”

This inaugural event proved to be a resounding success, infusing the space with a sense of joy, connection and creativity. It was an opportunity for members of all ages to discover hidden talents, forge new friendships, and strengthen the bonds of The Arbutus Club community.

We want to provide an enormous thanks the 25 Year Club Committee, who sponsored this event and to the amazing organizers John Ludgate, Morris Biddle, and Chris Fraser. As well to the widely talented ‘house-band’ who picked and grinned, strummed and sang, and included Barry Ellwood, Bert Clarke, Tom Wilson, as well as John and Morris. Lastly, a special thank you to the performers of the night who helped make this a wonderful event.

This is no hip-hop war just a humdinger of a party featuring huge food, cheap drinks and big-time dancing with DJ Squidward. A Swim Clinic with Olympian Brent Hayden

A Champion In The Pool

Brent Hayden is a name that resonates with every swimming enthusiast. Born on October 21, 1983, in Mission, British Columbia, Hayden has made a significant impact on Canadian swimming. Representing Canada for a decade, he is regarded as the fastest swimmer in Canadian history. Hayden’s achievements include a bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and a world championship in the same event in 2007. His dedication and skill have earned him the title of Canadian Swimmer of the Year multiple times.

Even after retiring from competitive swimming, Hayden continues to contribute to the sport. He has developed swim camps that offer an exciting opportunity for young swimmers to work with Canada’s premier sprint superstar. His philosophy is built around what he calls “Stroke Dynamic Efficiency,” minimizing resistance and maximizing propulsion.

Learning From the Best

In March, Hayden delivered a swim clinic for both junior and adult swimmers at The Club. The clinic was a unique opportunity for participants to learn and focus on stroke, start, and turn techniques, with in-water demonstrations by Hayden himself. Participants gained insight into mental preparation, sport psychology, and high-performance nutrition.

The swim clinic was more than just a learning opportunity; it was a chance for swimmers to interact with a swimming icon and be inspired by his journey.

“Hayden’s experiences, shared during the clinic, touched on overcoming failure, setting meaningful goals, and mentally preparing for race day.”
- eduardo finkelstein

Brent Hayden’s contribution to Canadian swimming extends beyond his achievements. His dedication to nurturing the next generation of swimmers is commendable. His visit to The Arbutus Club is a testament to his commitment and passion for the sport.

Making Waves: Our Swim Team’s Journey to Success

The Arbutus Rays have been making quite a splash recently, and it is time we dive into the details of their progress.

A Growing Team

One of the most exciting developments is the growth of our Swim team. More families are getting involved, and our roster of swimmers is expanding. This growth is not just in numbers but also in the camaraderie and team spirit that is palpable during every practice and swim meet.

Improving Performance

Our swimmers have been showing remarkable improvement. Their dedication to training is evident in their performance. We have participated in two swim meets this season, and we are eagerly looking forward to two more. The thrill of competition has been a great motivator for our swimmers, and they have risen to the challenge splendidly.

Achieving New Heights

We are proud to announce that six of our swimmers have qualified for the LMR (Lower Mainland Regional) standard times. This is a testament to their hard work and the excellent coaching they have received. Additionally, another seven swimmers are on the brink of achieving this standard. We are confident that they will reach this milestone soon.

A Fun Atmosphere

While we are serious about improving performance, we never forget that swimming is supposed to be fun. Our swimmers are enjoying their time in the pool, and the smiles on their faces during practice are proof of that. The involvement of families has also added to the joyous atmosphere. Parents cheering from the sidelines have become a common sight, providing our swimmers with a much-needed morale boost.

Coaches

We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to our swim coaches for their exceptional work and achievements with our swim team. Their dedication, expertise, and passion have been instrumental in our team’s success. The progress we have seen in our swimmers is a testament to their excellent coaching. Without them, none of this would have been possible. We are incredibly grateful for their contributions and look forward to seeing where their leadership takes us next. Thank you, coaches, for making a difference every day!

30 THE BARK SPRING 2024

Club Record Board

Our club record board captures the hard work, dedication, and progress of our swimmers. It is a source of pride for our team, as each name added represents a milestone achieved, or a challenge overcome. Seeing their names etched on the board, our swimmers feel a sense of belonging and accomplishment. These records are not just about the times they have clocked, but also about the journey they have undertaken to get there. It is a memorable achievement that will stay with them, a reminder of their dedication and the fun times they had as part of the team. As they grow and move on to their adult lives, these records will serve as cherished memories of their time with the swim team.

Looking Ahead

As we continue this exciting journey, we are confident that our team will keep improving and achieving new heights. We are grateful for the support of all our swim team families and look forward to celebrating more successes together.

A Message from Eduardo Finkelstein

The Swim Team Head Coach of the Arbutus Rays, Eduardo Finkelstein, is filled with immense gratitude and pride. Seeing the swimmers grow, improve, and achieve their goals is immensely rewarding. Their success reflects the collective effort, and for that, Finkelstein expresses his gratitude. But the journey does not end here; he is driven by a desire to reach even greater heights with our team. As Swim Team Head Coach and mentor, he envisions a future where our swimmers not only excel in their sport but also develop life skills that will serve them well beyond the pool. Together, we can make this vision a reality and make waves in the world of swimming!

34 THE BARK SPRING 2024

2023-2024 was a very memorable season for our Minor Hockey program. With 180 players registered (ages 6-18 years old) and 12 teams, the season was action-packed, full of on-ice development, great action, and lots of fun with friends.

We want to thank all of the volunteers who make the Minor Hockey season a success, starting with our amazing coaches, managers, and HCSP (Hockey Canada Safety Person). Not to be forgotten are the parents who help timekeep, scorekeep, and, of course, run the music!

On-ice success was very prevalent within the association this season. U13 A1 hosted the PCAHA (Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association) Tier 3 Final 4 right here at The Club, where we took on Aldergrove, Mission, and Semiahmoo. With a 2-1 record in the mini-tournament, the team punched their ticket to the BC Hockey Provincial Championships in Aldergrove BC, March 17-21, 2024. This is the second year in a row that U13 A1 is representing The Arbutus Club at the Provincial Championships!

Our U11 A1 team had a spectacular season as well, competing in Flight 1 within, which plays all the big association A1 teams. Our team held our own throughout the year and made it all the way to the Flight 1 Championship Banner game. They lost a hardfought battle in the finals, but no doubt walked away earning the respect of many associations throughout the season.

U13 C1 had one of the more dominant seasons a U13 C team can have this year. They won their regular season Banner in the top group of C hockey and also made it through the playoffs to the Championship game. In the Championship game, it was an absolute nail-biter of a hockey game with amazing saves at both ends, great hard teamwork, and determination. After the buzzer sounded in regulation, the game proceeded to overtime, resulting in a three-player shootout. Arbutus scored on our first two shots, and Max Stein held strong in net, denying both Richmond shooters for an epic win by the Avs!

U18 C1 also had a spectacular season, winning their Regular Season banner in the top group of C hockey and making it through playoffs to the Championship game. In the finals, they were focused and simply dominated, taking an 8-1 win after a game full of great teamwork, determination, and a few unbelievable saves by our goaltender Kai Healey.

A special shout out to U15C1 and U18C2 for making their PCAHA Championship Banner games. U15C1 came up short, losing in a shootout in a hard-fought game. U18C2 lost in regulation but had an incredible playoff run.

We would also like to recognize all of our graduating players in U18. It was great to see them all make it to the Final Championship game as they concluded their Minor Hockey journey.

Congratulations on an amazing season to all teams from our awesome U7 – U9 age group, into our C teams from U11, U13, U15, and U18, followed by our U11 A1 and U13 A1 teams. We are incredibly proud of the way you represented The Arbutus Club this season and are already looking forward to next year’s action!

The goal is to foster confidence so kids can say I can play

The Arbutus Club’s ‘I Can Play’ physical literacy program launched this past January and was a resounding success! The 10-week program had sixteen children between the ages of 6 to 8 years old participate in elements of play, exploration, and skill development. These young members enjoyed making friends, being active, developing athleticism, and most of all having fun!

Why the Program Started

In a world dominated by screens, instilling a lifelong love of physical activity in children has never been more crucial. Recognizing this need, the I Can Play physical literacy program emerged as a

pioneering initiative. Tailored for the specific developmental needs of children aged 6 to 8 years, this program transcends traditional sports coaching or multi-sport programs and focuses instead on holistic physical development and the cultivation of a passion for movement.

This innovative physical literacy program was conceptualized and spearheaded by Craig Mercer, Director of Athletics and Recreation, who put together a team of consultants consisting of Sydney Benmore (Aquatics Manager), Goran Zovko (Director of Tennis), Nicole McNaught (Gymnastics Director), Kathryn Kang (Skating Director), Eric Butler (Head Basketball Coach), Pauline Yu (Athletics and Recreation Coordinator), and Megan Gallant (Assistant Director of Athletics and Recreation).

36 THE BARK SPRING 2024

Foundations of the Program

At its core, physical literacy encompasses fundamental movement skills that allow individuals to engage confidently and competently in a variety of physical activities. The I Can Play program recognizes the importance of mastering these foundational skills during the formative years of childhood. Most importantly, creating an environment for children to play, explore, and challenge themselves, while also prioritizing fun and enjoyment helps to ensure that children associate physical activity with positive experiences.

During the 10 weeks, participants of all levels and experiences, improved their ability to move through different spaces, their ABCS (agility, balance, coordination, and speed), and developed fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, catching, swimming, and throwing. The program took the children to different areas such as the gymnasium, pool, mini rink, and Quilchena Park to improve their ability to move on land, in/on water, in the air and across ice.

"My girls loved this class; the hustle, hard work and dedication inspired by the teachers was excellent. Along with the camaraderie and team work amongst the group each week was top of class!"
- devonna gaglardi

Key Priorities and Principles

The following are the key priorities and principles established:

• Drills, progressions, and games must be developmentally appropriate.

• A maximum child/coach ratio of 8-1.

• The prioritized psychological components are confidence, motivation, and social connectedness.

• Aim to have 50% boys and 50% girls registered with a 50-50 male/female coach split.

• A sport etiquette focus (fair play & respect of others).

• Competition informal with no record of results.

• Progressions used to ensure an appropriate challenge for each participant.

• The lesson plans influenced by the Play, Practice, Play approach using games to encourage social inclusivity and teamwork.

In a world where the importance of physical literacy at a young age can often be overlooked, programs like ‘I Can Play’ serve to empower children to lead healthy, active lives. Stay tuned for additional age group offerings for this exciting new program at The Club!

Squash Invigoration

Have you felt the electric buzz pulsating through The Club lately? If you haven’t, you’ve been missing out on the resurgence of squash, the sport that’s capturing athletes at The Club and igniting a passion for this amazing sport! Everyone’s jumping on the squash bandwagon, and trust me, you don’t want to miss out.

This past Fall, we ran our first annual Women’s Racquets Workout and Wine event, in conjunction with Women’s Squash Week 2023. Picture this: courts filled with enthusiastic ladies, some picking up a squash racquet for the first time, while others rediscovered the joy of the game. Squash + laughs + wine = A good time... And that’s what we had!

Wait, the fun didn’t stop there this Fall. Enter the Racquets Party, an event that seamlessly blended social with sport. Members gathered for a fun evening of

friendly play, while trying their hand at squash and other sports. Music echoed through the Squash Lounge all evening as players showcased their racquet skills with their new friends. The evening concluded with a thrilling squash exhibition that left everyone in awe. Who knew squash could be this much fun?

Of course, we can’t forget about the staple squash events that keep the excitement alive week after week. Wednesday nights are reserved for the casual and fun Wednesday night house league. Let’s not overlook the annual Holiday Calcutta Tournament, a festive showdown that adds an extra dose of excitement to the holiday season. And for those looking to rub shoulders with the local pros, Thursday nights are for the Pro Squash Mixer, where our members and league players can learn from the best in the city!

A new event we are really excited about this season is The Arbutus Club Open Tournament, with the inaugural event taking place February 22 to 25, 2024. This event isn’t just about competition; it’s about elevating the profile of squash at our Club. With thrilling matches, fierce rivalries, and passionate spectators, it’s the perfect opportunity to showcase the camaraderie and talent that defines our squash community at The Club.

Whether you’re a seasoned player, curious beginner, or someone who used to play, there’s never been a better time to dive into the world of squash. Join us as we serve up excitement and endless fun on the squash court. Trust us, once you experience the thrill of squash, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start playing sooner. See you on the court!

Exercise is the Fountain of Youth

There is no greater intervention than exercise to make a positive impact on our health and longevity. Exercise has the power to reduce “all-cause mortality” more than any dietary choice or medical intervention. While those other factors are still important and do have a positive effect when incorporated into a healthy lifestyle, nothing else holds the ability to positively affect our lives as much as physical activity.

Unveil a host of transformative benefits through regular exercise. Physical activity has the power to enhance cardiovascular health, maintain muscle mass, and improve flexibility contributing to a more mobile and healthy body.

Unlocking Creativity: Art as a Lifelong Journey

The pursuit of creativity is an invaluable companion throughout life’s journey, and practicing art is a vibrant and enriching avenue for individuals of all ages to explore their creativity, foster self-expression, and continue their learning. Creative expression has a transformative power to enhance our overall well-being throughout our entire life.

At The Arbutus Club, we believe it’s never too late to pick up a paint brush, sculpt clay, or explore other mediums of self-expression. While art is beneficial for all ages, exploring art as an adult allows us to tap into hidden reservoirs of our imagination and creativity that may have been dormant for years.

The Wednesday Art Group

If any one has stopped by the Youth Room on a Wednesday morning, you will have surely seen the talented group of ladies who transform the space into their art studio for a few hours.

What started years ago as means of getting together and escaping the busyness of parenthood for a few hours, has evolved into a decades-long friendship centered around a shared passion for art. This weekly group has cultivated a haven for self-expression, camaraderie, and the joy of creating together. The Wednesday Art Group has moved from area to area throughout The Club as we expanded and renovated over the years – even meeting in the Squash courts for a brief period! The ladies all have different stories of how they started out in their art group journey and their styles and projects have evolved over the years. From soapstone carvings to watercolour and acrylics, knitting and painting ornaments, this group can do it all!

The group has changed over the years, but consistent regulars are Myra McCloy, Sylvia Heed, Lois Buntain, Vicky Rizzardo and Nancy Duncan. When asked about their favourite part of the weekly art group, the common answer was the friendship that this group provides them.

“This group is a space where I get to play and be creative with different colours and style! And have coffee with the girls.”
- Lois Buntain
“This group is great in that we can give each other friendly criticism and feedback to help each other get better.”
- Myra McCloy

The Club’s Debut 3x3 FIBA Style Tournament

On Sunday, February 25, basketball fever hit The Club as Hoopfest took center stage, marking the debut of our first-ever 3x3 FIBA style-tournament. For those that aren’t familiar, FIBA 3x3 tournaments are renowned for their fastpaced and exhilarating gameplay. Originating from humble beginnings with its inaugural event at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore back in 2010, this format swiftly ascended to Olympic status, making a memorable debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Hoopfest saw a spirited turnout of forty basketball enthusiasts, each bringing their unique flair and fervor to the court, contributing to an electric atmosphere.

The range of ages, experience and skill levels competing together fostered teamwork and strategic ingenuity on the court.

The competition featured eight teams, facing off in a series of heated match-ups throughout the evening. Congrats to Ben and Sebastian Dee, Kosta Fotiou and Aaron Ungapassart for a hard-fought win in the Championship finals over Chris Lacusta, Richard Alejandro, Nico Miranda, Koby Leung and Michael Bentley.

But the excitement didn’t end on the court. As the final buzzer sounded, players gathered in The Lounge to unwind and celebrate their shared love for the game, indulging in refreshing beverages and reliving the highlights of the day.

A heartfelt thank you to all the participants who made Hoopfest a resounding success, as well as the dedicated organizers whose efforts brought this exhilarating event to fruition. Until next time!
