THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER
This past year has been an exciting and challenging one for all of us here at The Arbutus Club; we embarked on some extensive physical changes and have had to make some significant decisions. There have been many heartwarming highlights and probably a few disappointments, but overall as I reflect on the year, I am struck by three immensely positive features of our Club: 1) Our Arbutus Club community has enormous depth and breadth 2) We have an incredibly passionate and engaged membership 3) The governing structure of our Club functions very well A great strength of our Club and Community is found in the depth and breadth of our membership. In striving to meet the needs and diverse interests of members aged Newborn to a Century, across courts, ice, water, tumble mats, studios, dining tables and dance floors, we offer an impressive variety of programs, services and facilities. We have created an environment where grandparents, parents and children can each enjoy their favorite activity simultaneously, arriving together and departing together, as families. We also provide a social environment for friends of all ages to visit and celebrate together. You won’t grow out of the Arbutus Club; no matter your skill level or age, you’ll find a place to belong. We are a very passionate population! While we celebrate the wide variety of interest groups within our Club, we must also recognize this generates an equally wide range of deeply felt loyalties and opinions. During times of significant change, these allegiances are especially emphasized. I’ve observed impassioned advocation by members for various Club elements, and while some of these sessions have indeed been conflict-ridden the underlying engagement and commitment to our Club by its membership is so positive. So much was accomplished through these discussions and I have to express particular gratitude to those members who conscientiously showed graceful patience in considering angles and perspectives beyond their own. It’s important to celebrate, protect and respect the diversity that
creates the stability and strength of our Club. It can be a complex balancing act to achieve harmony, and the reality is we please some of the members all of the time and all of the members some of the time, but we don’t please all of the members all of the time. With that in mind, the structure that governs our Club and ensures that these diverse voices are thoroughly heard should instill great confidence in all of us. As I’ve stated before, our Club is driven by our members and their involvement in and leadership of our business committees. Each of these committees meets monthly with its departmental management team to review performance, ensure compliance with Club policies and procedures, address member input and to collaborate on future initiatives. While I am very pleased by the progress made this year in these committees and by our Board, I know we are part of a long-standing chain of past Boards and future ones, who are committed to improving processes indefinitely. I believe the Arbutus Club continues to reflect the values, ideals and potential established by our Founding Members. The recent passing of our beloved visionary, Ms. Billie Mitchell, was a great loss to our community. I was fortunate to share a lunch with her this past year and will fondly remember her grace, charm and quick wit. Ms. Mitchell’s strength of character and commitment to our Club provided a wonderful example for us all. She will be missed and always remembered. And now, I would like to thank you all for the opportunity to serve as Club President. It has been a privilege to volunteer at the Arbutus Club and the time I’ve spent in this role and others has been incredibly fulfilling. I am particularly grateful for the friendships forged here I may not have had the opportunity to develop otherwise. My term as Arbutus Club President will come to an end on April 25th at our Annual AGM, and I will be transitioning my responsibilities to Ms. Martha Martindale. We are so fortunate to have her leadership and experience to guide the Club through the completion of the LRP and beyond. I assure you we are in very capable hands!

SUMMER REGISTRATION
NEW Registration System Coming Soon
Save the date for Summer program registration which starts online through Gametime, starting at 7:00am on Tuesday, May 28th.
Stay tuned for more information as we transition from iReg to Gametime, a new registration and booking system. Gametime is currently used by many clubs and while it has all the great features we currently have, it also offers a number of new features that will help improve our services. In addition to having a clear and simple interface for easy navigation (class registration and court booking), it will provide improved class communication via email including start date and cancellation reminders. Gametime is designed for processing a high volume of registrations and will also provide improved mobile capabilities. It is the most user-friendly system on the market, and we will be going live in early May 2019, in time for Summer Registration. More information will be communicated well before this date, and Recreation Services Staff will be available to help you transition to the new site.
Check out the new look for our summer brochures! You can view it online on the Club’s website the week of May 6th. For questions or inquiries, contact the Recreation Services Desk at 604-269-8800 or registration@arbutusclub.com.

Don’t Forget to Pamper Your Children We mean diapers of course. But what kind of diapers are appropriate for the pool? The Shoppe sells non-disposable swim diapers that you can quickly purchase in a pinch. Additionally, there are other disposable brands that can be purchased at most grocery stores in Vancouver. Not only do regular diapers leak and could cause an unsightly incident, but once waterlogged they are quite heavy. One slip and your baby would not be able to stand back up again due to the weight of the water. Regular diapers often take on water, which can lead to explosions and compromise pool mechanics. We want you and your children to be safe so pamper them with swim diapers and relax. For more information please email the Aquatics Manager, Julia Brobbel, at jbrobbel@arbutusclub.com. Join a group class by registering online or calling the Recreation Services Desk at 604-269-8800.

HIP HOP
BENEFIT OF HIP HOP FOR KIDS Dancing has been shown to have a positive impact on children. It gets them moving, helps their development in all areas, gives them confidence, increases their social skills, and more. Hip-hop dancing may be one of the youngest forms of dance out there, but the benefits it has for your child are numerous. At The Arbutus Club, we are passionate about arts education and your child. We strive to create a community with a positive atmosphere for your child to learn and grow.
WELL-ROUNDED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Dancing is a great way to introduce your child to physical activity. Dancing itself is a very active sport and art form, and can help your child be more physically fit. Through movement, it also teaches your child how to be graceful. It increases their balance and coordination. Hip-hop is a cardiovascular workout for your child, getting their blood flowing and strengthening their heart. However, it also helps strengthen their muscles through pushing them to learn more complex routines, training their muscles beyond what they are normally used to. The type of movement hip-hop dancing requires helps tone your child’s muscles and increases their flexibility and joint elasticity.
CREATIVITY AND MEMORY Hip-hop dancing is a one of the most creatively-driven styles of dance. Hip-hop classes give your child a space to create their own dance combinations and moves to the beat of the music. They learn that they can use dance as a form of expression. Creativity is important to children’s mental health, and increases the strength of their brain. Especially once they begin school, giving them a creative outlet to decompress is vital.
SOCIAL SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE Hip-hop class gives children the ability to socialize with other children who share similar interests and are outside of their regular circle. Hip-hop dancing is one of the most social forms of dance as it originates within a culture of different groups of people socializing through movement. Your child will learn different ways to communicate, as well as how body language is used to communicate. In the class setting, children get to exercise their social skills in learning how to communicate effectively with the teacher and other students. These skills are important to learn at a young age because they will be carried with them throughout the rest of their life. Additionally, hip-hop classes are great for developing children’s confidence. Especially when they have been working hard for a period of several months, they will have increased confidence and immense pride when it comes time to perform and show off their new skills. Performances for children are positive reinforcements for working hard, another skill that is important for young children to learn.

Children's Centre
Valentine’s Day in the Children’s Centre One of the many events we love to celebrate in the Children’s Centre is Valentine’s Day. The children brought Valentine’s treats and cards for all their classmates and handed one out to each child. They learned about friendship, what it means to be a kind friend and how to make our loved ones feel special. In Terrific Twos, the two year olds loved their Valentine’s Day Party. The teachers brought some heart-shaped cookies and they loved handing out their treats to their friends. Some children were very festive and even dressed up in red and pink! It was a great day of love and kindness in the Children’s Centre.

Bacchus to Basics By Andrew Cornell Director of Food & Beverage
the spanish charm of sherry Hello and thanks for reading! In the past article of Bacchus to Basics, we discussed the fundamentals of Port. This time, we’ll touch on a different fortified wine that comes from Spain instead of Portugal. The wine that I am speaking of is known as Sherry. In the past, you may have only found a bottle at your Grandmother’s house, but it is now making an appearance back in the mainstream for many delicious reasons.

the spanish charm of sherry
how is sherry made ? Sherry is a fortified wine; most simplistically, this means that a regular table wine is made and then a liquor is added into wine, increasing its alcohol content and making it ‘fortified.’ Sherry begins as a wine only made from white grapes grown in the vineyards surrounding Jerez, located in the southwest of Spain. It’s said that the name ‘Sherry’ is actually just the anglicization of the Spanish word Xeres (Jerez). There are about twelve different styles of Sherry, and all are treated to achieve different levels of sweetness, alcohol content, and flavour profiles. The diversity and variety of styles make it a particularly exciting wine. The lightest and driest styles of Sherry are most similar to a regular dry, white table wine while the most complex styles are aged in oak barrels, resulting in a wine that is very dark in colour and intentionally oxidized. While oxidation or the lack of oxidation play crucial roles in creating the style of a Sherry, flor is equally important. Flor is the name for a film of yeast that forms on the top of an aging wine under exact winemaking conditions.
This layer of yeast forms naturally and protects the wine underneath from contact with oxygen, which allows it to retain its freshness, acidity and clear colour. In the production process, it is very important to keep wine in airtight conditions in order to prevent oxidation and thwart off bacteria and wild yeast strains.
Sherry starts as wine only made from white grapes from Jerez in the southwest of Spain
Once regarded as Europe's finest wine 20

In the process of making Sherry, barrels are filled five-sixths full, leaving space empty, allowing the flor cap to form. The addition of too much alcohol (anything over 17%) and the flor will die, which means that the wine will have full contact with oxygen. Over time this will cause the wine to turn brown, less acidic, and rounder in profile. Just like when an apple is cut in half and left out on a counter, oxidation will occur leaving the fruit brown in appearance. The same process happens to wine if it comes into direct contact with oxygen. Though in this case, it is done deliberately and has positive qualities in the style of wine that is sought to be achieved.

the solera system The solera system aims to produce a consistent style of wine year after year. This unique process allows for wines of many different vintages to be blended together with the intent of having the finished product a mixture of ages. Imagine a pyramid of barrels stacked atop one another, every level containing sherry from a different vintage year. Each year, the winemakers drain wine from the very bottom level (the oldest) of the pyramid and bottle it for sale. They use freshly made Sherry wine to fill up the barrels on the uppermost level, and then all of the other levels filter down towards the bottom. Approximately one-third of each barrel is drained in this downward fashion, mixing wines from numerous vintage years. No barrel is ever completely drained, and therefore some of the earlier wine always remains in each barrel. The remaining wine diminishes to a small portion over

time, but there can still be significant traces of wines much older than the average year. In theory, traces of the very first wine placed in the 'solera system' may be still be present even after 50 or 100 years! So not only is the wine aging and gaining complexity, it is also being blended with other vintages and gaining the characteristics of those wines too. Don't be fooled! If you ever see a Sherry labelled with the word 'solera' and a year, this simply refers to the year that the solera was started, not that the entire bottle is actually 50 years. This bottle could contain a fraction of wine dating back to that original solera 50 years ago, but odds are the average age of the wines in the blend are much younger.
FUN FACTS ABOUT SHERRY By the end of the 16th century, Sherry had a reputation in Europe as the world's finest wine. When Ferdinand Magellan prepared to sail around the world in 1519, he spent more money on sherry than on weapons. It’s not just wine that is aged using the Solera System, other products that undergo this process include Balsamic vinegars, Spanish brandy and Spanish rums.
Non-oxidized, under a flor cap, this Sherry is dry, has saline notes and a fresh, zesty liveliness. Displays more coastal aromas than a Fino, such as seaspray. The English translation of Manzanilla is chamomile, which is another aroma typically found in this type of sherry.
In Sherry, fortification takes place after fermentation, meaning most Sherries are initially dry, with any sweetness being added later. While they are both fortified wines, this is starkly different than port wine which is fortified halfway through its fermentation, stopping the process to ensure not all sugar is turned into alcohol.
Oxidizes in a slow, controlled manner, and is exposed to oxygen through the slightly porous oak barrels. This sherry gains a darker colour and richer flavour than Fino, and is said to have nutty aromas, tobacco, aromatic herbs and oak. Made fully dry but often sweetened for export, Amontillado is also bottled with slightly higher alcohol levels (between 16% and 22%).
oloroso Aged in the absence of flor, in an oxidative way. To create an Oloroso, the base wine will be fortified with 17-18% alcohol, which makes it impossible for flor yeasts to survive. Due to evaporation of 3-5% in volume each year, the resulting Oloroso will grow more concentrated with an end result of 20-24% alcohol. Oloroso means fragrant, and the best examples will display dried fruits, leather, nutty aromas, balsamic notes, toasted wood, and tobacco. Though naturally dry, the relatively high strength and full body of an Oloroso will give it an impression of roundness and even sweetness.
While Scilian Marsala style wine is made in the solera system, they call the system 'in perpetuum,’ which comes from the Latin meaning ‘forever.’ www.arbutusclub.com

n Wednesday, February 13th The Arbutus Club lost our gracious and visionary ‘first lady,’ Mrs. E.V. ‘Billie’ Mitchell at the age of 103. Her vision to create a private club with recreation and social facilities for families in Vancouver planted the seed for the place we all call home today. She was a legend amongst the figure skating community and her legacy lives on through the families that hold memberships at The Club.
“The Arbutus Club became a reality because of Billie Mitchell,” acknowledges Brent Elkington, CEO of The Arbutus Club. “It’s a pretty remarkable story that started with one remarkable individual.” After moving to Vancouver from the North Shore in 1949, Mrs. Mitchell became passionately involved in the local figure skating community. She first served as a volunteer and later a board member for the Kerrisdale Figure Skating Club, while also commuting to West Vancouver’s Capilano Winter Club to serve as a member of the Organizing Committee and a member of the Board of Directors. Billie’s involvement in the skating community across the Lower Mainland enabled her to recognize that the city of Vancouver lacked a family-focused, multi-purpose recreation facility; the idea for The Arbutus Club was beginning to take shape. While driving home from a skating session at The Forum in the late 1950s, Billie had a sudden bolt of inspiration. It was time for the sporting community to take root in Vancouver with the creation of a private club. Excited at the prospect, Billie immediately organized friends and influential community figures to help her dream come to fruition. “[It] was the one

time I didn’t procrastinate … we had something worthwhile to pursue,” admitted Billie in a 1984 interview. Plans for The Arbutus Club evolved swiftly. Billie recruited friends to assist with her proposal, including architects Frank Anderson and Mark Sharp, forming a society of members who were equally interested in the prospect of a private club. The team held open houses, community meetings, and restlessly campaigned for others to contribute. The hard work proved enormously effective, with the enlistment of enough members to raise $200,000 in initiation fees, allowing the purchase of property and club construction to begin. Plans were developed for a state-of-the-art 57,700 square-foot facilities, complete with an enclosed swimming pool, social amenities, and the City of Vancouver’s largest ice surface at the time. On February 11, 1965 The Arbutus Club officially opened its doors. The ice rink that Mrs. Mitchell yearned for was open for Members, sparking the first milestone of The Arbutus Club’s Phase 1. Membership numbers increased as other recreation services were built for the club. The seed that Billie had planted steadily grew into a solid family tree. “She did not do anything halfway. Whether it was her family or her profession or her philanthropy, she poured her entire self 30

into it,” explains grandson, Owen Clark. “She did not focus on all the barriers associated with any particular endeavour. She focused on the possibilities. She forged her own path when there was no path to follow – and she enriched the lives of others along the way.” Billie Mitchell’s accomplishments go beyond her inspiring role as one of the founders of The Arbutus Club. A tenacious community leader, Mrs. Mitchell’s career illustrates the extraordinary passion she had for figure skating. In 1961, Billie was elected the Chair of the British Columbia Section of the Canadian Figure Skating Association (CFSA), becoming the first woman elected to the Board of Directors. She broke gender barriers and made history by becoming the first woman to be President of the CFSA and to serve on its executive level. These achievements culminated in Mrs. Mitchell receiving Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee medal from The Government of Canada in 1977 and later being inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame, recognized as a “Builder” in the realm of figure skating. Billie’s grandson, Mr. Clark explains, “her accomplishments were not the result of a deep ambition to wield power or receive praise; her accomplishments were the result of unshakeable confidence in herself, natural unselfishness, and a desire to make life just a little better for someone else.” This sentiment is echoed by Pam Greenslade, Figure Skating Director at The Arbutus Club, “she pioneered many initiatives in our sport, which are still in effect today. Billie was all about family – both the immediate and extended ones – her skating fraternity involved at every level of the sport to The Arbutus Club Members and staff.”
Life of achievements Billie Mitchell, also affectionately known at The Arbutus Club as Member No.1, will have a lasting legacy as the bold, resourceful, and determined woman that created a home away from home. “Billie is – and always will be – the pillar of what The Arbutus Club stands for,” says CEO, Brent Elkington. “One energized thought, followed by an immeasurable amount of action has built our Club to what it is today. I don’t know how almost 8,000 Members and over 400 employees can ever thank her for what she accomplished, but on behalf of all of us, thank you.”
1915 Billie born in the Marpole neighbourhood of Vancouver
1958 Billie dreams of a private club located in Vancouver. She rallies her friends, business contacts, and community leaders to support her vision.
1958 - 1960 Billie and her recruits enroll enough members to generate $200,000 for the land sale and construction project.
1961 Becomes the first female Section Chairman on the National Board of Directors for the Canadian Figure Skating Association (CFSA).
1962 The Arbutus Club purchases property at the corner of Nanton and Arbutus, bringing Billie's idea one step closer to fruition.
June 1964 Billie joins The Arbutus Club President, Bill Henson and Senior Management at the sod turning ceremony to mark the beginning of construction.
February 1965 The Arbutus Club Ice Rink opens to Members for the first time.
1976 Billie is the first woman elected as President of the CFSA.

Figure Skating
DID YOU KNOW? Many of our young skaters ask questions relating to the ice and its maintenance. How much water does it take to build a rink? If the floor is level, it will take approximately 10,600 gallons. What is the temperature of the ice? "There is a sensor on the concrete slab that sends a signal to our ice plant and to our computer building control program that tells us ice temperature. It is always between 6-8C. The arena is kept at 8C. The humidity is controlled by the white unit on the stage above the timekeeper bench. We keep it around 50%. It is computer monitored."
Farewell to our Figure Skating Matriarch Billie's focus on creating a training venue for national and international figure skaters was a first in the city and has laid the foundation for the sport to flourish PAM GREENSLADE The Arbutus Club Figure Skating Director
– Stephen MacVittie, Plant Operations Manager Helene Madison Pool at the WAC
Why do the figure skaters and hockey players like different ice temperatures? Hockey prefers harder ice to facilitate faster skating. It allows for smoother less snowy playing surface which allows the puck to slide easier. Figure skaters prefer softer ice to enable the toe pick to “plant” without shattering the ice and making large holes. How thick is the ice? “At The Arbutus Club we keep the ice at 1 ½”- 2” and thickness tests are done weekly with a laser unit that stores all the thickness and location data. The data is then uploaded to the computer.” – Stephen MacVittie, Plant Operations Manager
How do you make ice? Forming a good skating surface is not an easy task by any means and freezing a rink properly involves many stages. Making ice requires technology similar to the functioning of a refrigerator or an air conditioner. The main difference is a refrigerator doesn’t cool ice directly, it cools a calcium chloride solution known as brine water which is pumped through pipes beneath the ice. The system mainly consists of 3-piece chillers, steel pipes and brine water/refrigerant.

Minor Hockey
Hockey with the Canucks Back in February, 10 goalies from The Arbutus Club Pee Wee and lower levels, participated in an informative hockey clinic. Instructing and assisting the young players were 7 goalies from Bantam and Midget. It was a great evening and we had a good group of spectators observing the session.
Ian Clark, Goalie Coach of the Vancouver Canucks, was in attendance. Ian taught the kids some game tips and techniques, providing a very engaging hockey experience that was both challenging and awesome.
REMINDER: Registration for returning players is April 10 - April 24, 2019.
An amazing experience, and a ton of fun!

sealfit for success How Small Business Owner and Proud Father, Chris Fleck, Discovered a Navy SEAL Style Physical and Mental Training Program Hi, my name is Chris Fleck. I’m a small business owner, father of 2 awesome kids and a husband to a very understanding and tolerant wife who knows my need to seek out “uncommon” challenges. Several people have asked me about my fitness transformation over the past few years so I wanted to share my journey with others that may find themselves like I did 3 years ago in the gym with no goals, motivation, purpose or passion. I was approaching my 40’s and knew I was getting older and was starting to get weaker emotionally, mentally and physically. I wanted more. My wife introduced me to Sealfit. My goal was to complete Sealfit Kokoro (50+ hrs). Modelled after US Navy Seal hell week, it is the ultimate physical and mental challenge. It takes place at Camp Pendleton , California. Sealfit is a way of life. It is an integrated functional fitness and mental toughness program. It’s run by retired and reserve Navy Seals, members of special

operations community and a select few Sealfit certified coaches. It is very demanding, yet extremely fun and scaleable to meet the needs of both beginner and advanced athletes. Robert Gibb, The Arbutus Club Personal Training Director, helped with the Olympic Lifts, Kettlebell strength at beginning of the journey. Yves McDavid and I did a few sessions of High Intensity Training and Jerome Bertrand helped with injuries. Through retraining bad movements and increasing my range of motion, I was able to complete the training required. The journey I took has helped me shatter my limits in all areas of my life. It has me in the best shape of my life, training with passion and purpose again. It simply makes you a better father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, teammate and leader. The program and coaches have made me understand the importance of thinking of others first, giving back, helping those in need and always focusing on living a daily life with
gratitude, humility, accountability and extreme ownership. Myself, Patty (my brother), and a few other enthusiasts have been down to train with the Sealfit community and Coaches, completing some of their crucible events. We are hoping to bring these events up to Vancouver area: •
20x Sealfit challenge (12 hrs)
•
Sealfit Kokoro (50+ hrs)
What’s holding you back? Break free of mediocrity and find your new limits. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to christopherafleck@hotmail.com

Coming from a background in sports, Stephanie’s life completely changed five years ago when she discovered the incredible benefits of Pilates. Through its healing practice, Stephanie was able to fully recover from a ten-year-old injury that prevented her from playing and competing in tennis – a sport she had been passionate about as a junior growing up in Montreal.
When Linda discovered CALLANETICS™ classes at The Edinburgh CALLANETICS™ Studio she was instantly hooked. It was the only exercise regime that she ever enjoyed and kept up with, and the results were great motivation.
Stephanie returned to the sport as a Tennis Professional, owing much of her success to Pilates, and is eager to share her training and experience with her clients. It is her hope that it allows them to also achieve their goals. Stephanie’s passion for Pilates truly shines through in her way of teaching. She aims to inspire her clients and empower them with the knowledge and the strength to move their bodies mindfully, healthfully and with ease: a practice she hopes they will carry outside the studio, and throughout their everyday lives. Stephanie is a certified STOTT PILATES® instructor who completed her Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Barrels training at Full Circle Studio, under the mentorship of Darcy McMurray and Heather Laura Gray. She is also a certified Tennis Canada instructor who coaches provincial-level junior players at The Arbutus Club. Stephanie is a new Pilates instructor at the Arbutus Club but is also a current tennis coach.

Linda continued going to classes for four years to maintain the tightening and toning of her body before moving to Vancouver in early 2006. At the time, there were no CALLANETICS™ classes in Vancouver, nor anything like it. Missing the classes so much and the effect on her body shape, she went about becoming a CALLANETICS™ teacher herself. Certified in September 2007, Linda was the first Certified CALLANETICS™ Teacher in British Columbia and is still one of only a handful in Canada. Linda teaches CALLANETICS™ classes around Vancouver and has been teaching at The Arbutus Club since 2009. In early 2016, Linda was invited to LA to be a part of filming new CALLANETICS™ videos - the first release of official videos in 22 years. Linda is currently in year 2 of certifying as a Restorative Exercise Specialist™ through Nutritious Movement™ and has recently certified as a Pilates teacher through Boditree Pilates and Healing.

love your heart Using Exercise to Fight Heart Attacks and Improve Your Overall Cardiovascular Health
E
xercise has numerous health benefits that have been widely proven to affect the body in a positive manner. One of these manners is heart health. It has been shown that regular cardiovascular and resistance exercise has the ability to strengthen the heart. Did you know the heart beats an average 100,000 times per day, 35 million beats a year, and roughly 2.5 billion times in a lifetime? The left side of the heart pumps blood through 120,000 km of blood vessels which is the oxygenated blood. Your heart has a cardiac output of approximately 5 litres per minute at rest and in elite athletes it can be as high as 30 L/minute. The heart is made up of 2 ventricles and 2 atriums which serve to pump de-oxygenated blood to the lungs and then back out to the rest of the body. The deoxygenated blood comes from the inferior and superior vena cava into the right atrium and right ventricle. This blood is pumped to the lungs via the pulmonary artery to receive fresh oxygen and return to the left atrium via the pulmonary veins. The atrium supplies the left ventricle. The left ventricle contracts to push blood through the aorta to the rest of the body to supply oxygen throughout. Exercise can help increase the strength of the contractions of the heart, increase the overall blood volume, change the percentages of the blood composition, and reduce the resting heart rate. Having a reduction in heart rate is beneficial because it is typically from a stronger contraction of the ventricles which means the heart muscle itself is stronger. The heart muscle (which is called the myocardium) can actually increase in thickness from both exercise and disease. Blood volumes can increase anywhere from 0.5 Litres to 1.0 Litres depending on a person’s size, weight, and gender. Blood volume of an adult male is on average 5.0 litres for males and 4.5 liters for females. Additionally, blood is typically comprised of three major components: red blood cells, plasma (water), and white blood cells. These components can vary based on the type of exercise you do, as well it can change based on your health status. This may help to avoid common heart issues. If you include 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three times a week into your routine it may have positive benefits to your heart. You can bicycle, run, use an elliptical, or swim to achieve your 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise.

Balance Training for Everyone Balance is a trainable skill that can be developed at any age and is useful in many different aspects of life. It is needed in sports, going up stairs, walking on snow and ice, walking with groceries and much more. Working in conjunction with resistance exercise, balance can help avoid hip fractures and prevent harmful falls. Balance is a combination of feedback from muscles, joints, tendons, and signals sent from the brain to correct for imbalances. The brain will send commands to the
muscles and use feedback from a variety of structures to correct to maintain balance. The ear is used in the vestibular system for maintaining spatial orientation and balance. There is a myriad of health issues that can affect a person’s balance including vertigo. The vestibular system maintains static and dynamic equilibrium. Static equilibrium is the maintenance of the body position relative to force of gravity while dynamic equilibrium is the maintenance of body position in
reaction to sudden movements such as acceleration and deceleration of movements (twisting, jumping, walking, and sitting). The vestibular system is made up of the semicircular ducts, utricle, and saccule. The semicircular ducts maintain dynamics equilibrium. The utricle and saccule maintains static equilibrium. If you feel that your balance could use some work, contact Jesse Robertson, Fitness Manager, at jrobertson@arbutusclub.com to give you exercises in person to try. www.arbutusclub.com

CONGRATS Names in the News Congratulations go out to Nicki Horton and Tim Hopkins who won the 2019 Arbutus Couples Championships. In the final they edged out Shannon Taylor and Lorne Folick after facing match points against them. The Most Romantic Couple was Darlene Prosser and Chris Webber. There was a great atmosphere for the Queen of the Court team event. The ultimate Queen ended up being Stacy Lederman who went undefeated throughout the whole event. The Arbutus Junior Club Championships saw the following winners: Benjamin Dee, Veronica Dee, Natalie Thomas, Matthias Dee, Dexter Tournquist, Louis Rapoport and Matthew Yeung.
TENNIS ETIQUETTE: When it comes to attire please, remember to wear t-shirts that are tennis related or are plain and wear shorts made for tennis. The main communication with doubles partners during a match should be 1) to give positive support and encouragement or 2) to discuss tactics based on how the opponents are playing. Resist the urge to “coach” your partner. Though the intentions are good it is rarely taken well. Please remember to turn cell phones off when on the court in consideration of fellow players.
TENNIS TRIVIA: If your serve hits the returner’s partner in the air what is the ruling? As of March 1, how many Canadian men and women have a singles ranking in the top 100 in the world?

Squash
ARBUTUS JUNIORS SQUASHING THE COMPETITION Geoffrey Yee, Jaden Lee and Daniel Tiwana are Juniors on the Rise Arbutus juniors are going from strength to strength. Over the past year, Club Professional Ian Woodhead, has seen three of his juniors really step up their training. Geoffrey Yee, Jaden Lee and Daniel Tiwana are three of The Club prodigys making great strides up the Squash BC rankings. All three of the boys are training at least five times a week and playing in local tournaments. Geoffrey and Jaden have risen to the top 20 in the U13’s while Daniel Tiwana is ranked #13 in the U11 category. At only 8 years old, Daniel has a few years left in the U11’s.
DANIEL TIWANA How long have you been playing squash? 2.5 years. What is your favorite thing about squash? Making my opponent run and inflicting maximum pain on them. Favorite shot? Cross court backhand volley nick and Triple windmill fake (like James Willstrop). What is your future goal? I have two: Reaching the top 10 in the World Squash rankings, and becoming Arbutus Club Mens Squash champion before age 14. What is your favorite food to eat after a hard, physical match? Lamb popsicles in Bengali masala (from Market Meats) with roast potatoes and Colmans Garden Mint Sauce.
Club coach Ian Woodhead had this to say about the three boys: “When I first started at the Club in Fall 2017, the three boys were just starting out playing squash. Over the past 16 months, they have started playing in some minor beginner events, and are now competing with the best juniors in BC. This is a testament to their hard work and dedication. I think this goes to show what can be achieved if you take a sport seriously and put the training in. They’re a pleasure to coach and I’m really looking forward to what they can all achieve in years to come.”
GEOFFREY YEE How long have you been playing squash? I started playing squash 3 years ago but started training more seriously just over a year ago. I started taking lessons from Ian when he started last September. What is your favorite thing about squash? I like the fast pace in squash because it tests your reflexes. What is your future goal? I want to beat my dad before I’m 13 so that I can say my dad lost to a 12-yearold! In the future I want to beat a PSA player. I know there is a lot of work to do first. I like the hard work because it’s a sign of me pushing myself. Favorite shot? I like the back-hand drive because it looks nice when I do it! Of course, it also makes your opponent run a lot. What is your favorite food to eat after a hard, physical match? Sometimes I don’t like eating after squash but when I do, I usually eat pizza because it’s one of my favorite foods.

West End Walking Tour with John Atkin Settled in the late 1880s, the West End was popular because it was away from the smoke and smells of the harbour and its industry. Large mansions and houses populated the choice sections along the waterfront and next to Stanley Park. Zoning in the 1920s set the stage for the neighbourhood of towers we know today. John Atkin will take you on a walk to explore the fascinating history of this popular and ever changing neighbourhood.

This presentation will cover a variety of topics useful to Canadians who travel frequently to the United States including trip planning, border crossing issues, forms, medical insurance and more.
Settled in the late 1880s, the West End neighbourhood was popular because it was away from the smoke and smells of the harbour and its industry. Large mansions and houses populated the choice sections along the waterfront and next to Stanley Park. Zoning in the 1920s set the stage for the neighbourhood of towers we know today. John Atkin will take you on a walk to explore the fascinating history of this popular and ever changing neighbourhood.
