THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Goodbye 2019. Throughout the previous year, Arbutus 2020 played a large part in our daily Club life, impacting most of our facilities and programs in some form or another. It has been a long and challenging project, but the good news is that we are finally nearing completion. Thank you to everyone for your patience throughout this period. The new South Gymnasium opens this month. We are excited about having this space for our youth programs and a variety of other activities. There will also be ample opportunity for members to drop in and enjoy open gym time. The Fitness Centre, elevator, physiotherapy & wellness, and spa are scheduled to open at the end of February, as well as the Billie Mitchell Room, Boardroom and Administration area. The Squash Lounge is slated for early March, and Club Reception for the first week of April. The end is near!!! I want to thank the members of the Construction Committee: Soren Rasmussen, Sandi Munro, Mike Bingham, David Bullus, Alan Whitchelo, Bernie Wittig, Jeff Thorsteinson and Ben Lutes. Their dedication to the success of the project has been remarkable. It is quite impressive to think that the project remains on budget and close to the original schedule, considering its scope and the additional seismic work completed. As our project comes to an end, so does my term as Club President. I look forward to celebrating a completed renovation in my final message in the Annual Report come April. This year's Nominating Committee has begun the important job of determining the slate for the 2020/21 Board of Directors. The Committee considers each candidate's contribution as House Committee members, professional experience, skills, family category and Club usage. This process ensures an effective and balanced Board to meet the Club's current and future needs. The Committee's recommendation will be presented to the membership by March 15th.

Last month the Board held a special meeting to approve management's 2020 strategic goals and evaluate the 2019 operating results. I can confirm that interest in new membership remains strong. 2020 will be another busy year for management, with many exciting initiatives planned. In my very first correspondence as President, I introduced the membership civility campaign on behalf of the Board of Directors and Membership Committee. The campaign, beginning with 'The Good Member Guide', highlighted the concept of civility and practical ways to improve civil behaviour. Many members shared their support for this campaign, communicating a mutual desire for a more respectful and community-centred environment. This initiative will continue throughout 2020 and I hope our collective efforts will elevate the civility at our Club. We have also had a growing interest by members in the Club’s green initiatives and eco-conservation practices. This is a matter that is continuously considered by management, with exciting new initiatives to come in 2020, including the installation of additional water bottle refill stations and the discontinuation of single-serve plastic sandwich containers and razors. Don't miss the Club's 55th Emerald Anniversary Celebration event on February 29th. The new South Gymnasium and Shaughnessy Room will be transformed to bring you a night of enchantment, luxury and celebration. It is going to be a spectacular event and I look forward to seeing you there. In closing, I am continually impressed by the commitment and good works of our Board, committees and staff. We truly have an exceptional Club, which my family and I are proud to be part of. Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns, and all the best in 2020.

Fitness Centre It is hard to believe we have had no access to our Fitness Centre for over a year. With equipment moves throughout the year, combined with construction noise, vibration and dust, it is certainly challenging. Many of our Members continued to use our temporary facilities during the infrastructure upgrades and we thank you for your kindess, patience, and understanding. We have noticed a tremendous outpouring of support and the positive attitudes of our Members does not go unnoticed. The Fitness Centre will be opening soon with a new look, new equipment, and an elevator. It will now be accessible for all Members and having our Physiotherapy and Wellness department located in the Fitness Centre will further improve our services.

FitPass Update It is never too late to start your New Years resolutions. If you would like to change up your workouts, we encourage you to give our FitPass a try. We offer 36 classes a week at $55.00 per month. The class options are outstanding and include, Cyclefit, Core, Yoga, Mat Pilates, Roll and Recover and more. The feedback on FitPass since it’s kick off in September 2019 has been outstanding. All you need to do is sign in with your member number as you enter the studio. Personal Training

the way you move There is a lot to consider when retraining movement for optimal health, but first you need a starting point. Here are three things to consider and get you started.

H

ave you ever seen someone who moves with ease and poise? When they walk, they glide; when they run, they're swift. Their movements are effortless and captivating. Think major league athletes, such as Wayne Gretzky. Hockey fan, or not, it was hard to pry your eyes off of him as he smoothly skated like magic on the ice. It turns out there’s more to that unnamable something you’re seeing – movement is the currency of health. Compelling research highlights the importance of gait (walking pattern) as an indicator for declining health, across all age groups. Any movement, such as walking, requires the interplay of many of your organs, and bodily systems (bones, heart, lungs, nervous system, muscles, vision, vestibular, etc.…). When these important systems begin to faulter, so does your agility, coordination, and overall physical movement.

8

The Bark s p r i n g

2020

Alignment: What is your posture saying about you? Posture is useful because it tells the story of your body’s movement habits and efficiency, creating a narrative about how your joints spend their time. Joints have positions of optimal function in relation to how corresponding muscles, tendons, and ligaments are positioned around them. Poor alignment means decreased range of motion and less power from muscles, ease of movement, circulation of fluids, and oxygen absorption. Several studies have investigated body posture and emotional states. Most notably, posture can affect mood, and memory recall. A mere shift from a slouched to upright posture, can change your mood, so significantly, this activity is being considered as part of treatment for depression.

Personal Training

Neuromuscular activation/inhibition: Who’s overworked? Who’s asleep? For various reasons, muscles can become inhibited, while other muscles can become overworked. At this stage, life gets complicated for your health care practitioner. Did the inhibition happen because you sat at your desk for too many hours? Or is this the sign of something internal? Maybe it’s both. Just because a muscle is overactivated, doesn’t mean it’s strong. It could be weak and tight, so do you strengthen, or stretch? How to proceed isn’t always straight forward, but furthering your movement story, with the ‘who’, and ‘what’ is essential to maintaining efficient movement.

Input/output and your brain Movement is a habit built by the brain. Your brain receives up to twenty million signals per second from your body’s sensory equipment. The signals are then integrated into a map your brain uses to operate you. Good input means detailed maps and solid output. However, if your brain receives poor input, it gives poor output, which for the body means poor movement and sometimes pain. Once you have assessed and identified your points of stress, you are ready to begin. Improving movement requires a multifaceted approach. Some muscles will have to be released and some strengthened, to restore tensegrity, and functional mobility. The nervous system, and your brain can be reeducated with simple exercises to restore good quality movement and decrease pain. Build a program for better movement tailored just for you!

Personal Training

trap bar deadlift Fitness Centre Attendant, Patrick Garces, offers tips on how to target muscles in the legs, hips, lower back, and glutes. Great for building total body strength and athleticism, this variation of the deadlift is great for beginners because of the neutral grip that allows one to lift the bar in a more natural position. Another benefit of the trap bar deadlift is that it puts less stress on the lower back because the weight is positioned at either side of the body, i.e. the centre of gravity of the weight is within your body weight, rather than in the front during a conventional deadlift.

Step by Step Guide: 1. Set up the trap bar with the appropriate weight. Bumper plates are usually preferred. 2. Stand shoulder width apart in the middle of the trap bar, with your ankles aligned to the middle of the bar. 3. Bend at the hips and knees to grasp the middle part of the handles. 4. Hinge your hips back to feel tension in your hamstrings. Your back should be flat and shoulders should be pulled back with the chest out. 5. To lift the bar, brace your core whilst standing up to straighten the knees and hips. Tighten the glutes at the top of the rep.

Training Tips: 1. Remember to hinge at the hips. A common mistake is to only bend at the knees, which is essentially just a squat. 2. At the top of the rep stand straight up and try not to lean back because this can cause unnecessary stress on the spine and lower back. 3. Breathe in to create tension in your core and out as you stand up. 4. If the trap bar is too heavy to begin with, practice the movement by lifting two kettlebells on an elevated surface, on either side of the body.

6. To lower the bar, bend at the hips and knees in a controlled manner.

Aquatics

diving in at any age Ready to snorkel in the Galapagos Islands, Margaret Duncan details her intrepid journey of learning how to swim as an adult. The Aquatics Department sat down with long time member Margaret Duncan to find out what motivated her to take swim lessons. Margaret had taken lessons previously and decided to pick it up again, due to her upcoming holiday in warmer climes. Margaret shows us that you can learn to swim at any age, for any reason. Aquatics: At what age did you decide to learn swimming? Margaret: In my early 70s Did you ever have fear of water? I have never had a bad experience, that I recall, but I was just never comfortable in the water in general. As a child I loved to paddle around in the water, but swimming wasn’t something I learned, so it passed me by. I have always wanted to be able to swim.

Have you ever tried to learn to swim prior to this Fall? Yes, I have made a couple of attempts and then was able to flounder around a bit more.

Have you snorkeled before? I have snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, but needed to swim closer to another snorkeler. Now I feel a bit more in control and ready for this.

What are some barriers that you needed to overcome with swimming? I do not like my face in the water, so I only ever wanted to learn breaststroke.

How prepared do you feel for snorkeling in open water now? My mental approach to open water is much better. I feel much more in control now.

What was it that motivated you to take lessons this time around? I have an upcoming trip to the Galapagos Islands where I will be on a catamaran, so I was determined that this time I was going to beat the water and see the fish. I had to learn how to use a snorkel and flippers. I did try a full face mask and while I liked it, I feel the traditional half mask with snorkel is better for me.

How was your experience with your instructor? Tia was fantastic! If Margaret’s swimming success story has inspired you to get back into aquatics, we can help. You can book your private lessons at days and times that work within your schedule. Please contact Julia Brobbel, Aquatics Manager at jbrobbel@arbutusclub.com or call her at 604-269-8805.

Pickleball

viva las vegas Our pickleballers took their game south of the border, competing in the 2019 Majestic Journeys Vegas Open in Nevada. In recent years, pickleball has increased participation. With over 300 Members, it is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing sports at The Arbutus Club. It is no surprise that the group is now participating in tournaments beyond the walls of our own gymnasium. Going by the moniker "Craig's Angels", (as male team member Craig Lamb is outnumbered by his female counterparts by 13:1) the team made the journey to Las Vegas for the pickleball tournament. The group served up some fierce competition on the courts. After their win, the team celebrated in true Sin City style by experiencing the entertainment capital of the world.

Pickleball Facts 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

You can play indoors or outdoors. Here at the Club we have 2 dedicated outdoor courts and shared use of the gymnasium with other activities (4 courts). The pickleball court uses doubles court badminton measurements and we have portable first rate pickleball nets. Although it began as a sport for all ages and skill levels, a professional level of competition developed. Pickleball pros compete in annual tournaments nationally and on a worldwide basis. It’s an adaptive sport. For example, there are rules available for wheelchair adaption. Due to its worldwide popularity, the International Federation of Pickleball (IFP) was founded. Its member countries include the US, Canada, France, Great Britain, India, and Spain. As the popularity of the game grew, so did its spectators. You can watch matches and learn new technical skills on The Pickleball Channel. The first world tournament occurred in 1976 at the South Centre Athletic Club in Tukwila, Washington. The first permanent court for the sport was constructed in 1967. Truly a sport for all ages, 68 percent of its players are aged 60 years or older. The sports popularity extends to both genders almost equally: 53 percent of players are male and 47 percent are female. This allows for many mixed doubles teams.

Arbutus Club activities include drop in play, round robins, team arranged games, learn to play clinics, special events and lessons for all levels of player. If you are interested in participating in this sport please contact Sue Snow ssnow@arbutusclub.com.

Figure Skating

the anatomy of a figure skater What does it take to be a talented figure skater? A professional coach gives insight into why there's more than meets the eye. Core Strength and Stability Core strength originates from abdominal and back muscles. These muscles work together to act as a “control centre for body balance and stability. Skaters need exceptionally strong core muscles to maintain balance, check rotation and maintain a tight air position for jumping. Checking out of a jump involves the contraction of the muscles in the abdominals and the lower back, to resist the rotational force of the jump. Without core stability a skater will have trouble maintaining the body over the skate and continue turning past the landing point. Balance Think about how much skating is done on one foot, almost everything. Several factors affect one's sense of balance. Our vestibular system (our inner ear) helps us sense the body’s position while moving. Others are the eyes which help detect surroundings and also more importantly other skaters. The balance receptors in our feet and lower extremities tell us where our body is in relation to the ground. Strength and Power Strength creates power and can improve endurance. With exercise muscle fibre becomes tighter and stronger, withstanding repetition for longer durations. Increases in strength correlate with higher jumps, more stable landings, increased energy output and the ability to maintain difficult spin variations. Flexibility Muscle flexibility controls the angle of the knee, hip and ankle joint on a jump take-off and landing. Each joint in your body needs a balance of flexibility on all sides to move in the proper range of motion. Spins, spirals and field movements all require the skater be flexible. Imbalances of muscle length leads to injury. By staying fit and maintaining an exercise regime for strength and stability you can help prevent skating related injuries. Minor Hockey

behind the lens Jeff Vinnick photographs hockey legends and international sporting events, but still manages to lend a hand to our Minor Hockey team.

J

eff Vinnick has been photographing our Minor Hockey team for over 6 seasons at The Arbutus Club. However, many of you might recognize him as the Vancouver Canucks' official photographer, between the benches at a game or capturing NHL legends on the ice. Jeff started his photography career part time while living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and didn't begin freelancing full time until his move to Vancouver in 1989. His first full season with the Vancouver Canucks was in 1997, a particularly eventful year for the team. The Canucks acquired Mark Messier, travelled to Japan to play and famously traded Trevor Linden. Jeff has been the team photographer for the Canucks ever since and between the Canucks, Hockey Canada, and the Hockey Hall of Fame, he has had the pleasure of photographing every major hockey event in the world, including Stanley Cups, Outdoor Games, AllStar Games, the IIHF World Championships, Olympic Games, World Hockey Championships, the World Juniors and thousands of regular games at every different level of hockey from 5 year olds up to professional.

Jeff covers all Canucks home games, often shooting from between the team benches, allowing him to be positioned in the middle of the action. People often ask him what it’s like being so close to NHL greats, which he meets with enthusiasm and proclaims that the experience never ever gets old. In addition to his work with the Canucks, Jeff also runs his own commercial photography business and has travelled the world meeting thousands of different people. Jeff has his wonderful wife Colleen and two boys Ben and Josh, who grew up playing Minor Hockey for the T-Birds. We are incredibly lucky to have Jeff as part of The Arbutus Club family and appreciate him taking time out of his busy schedule to capture the next generation of hockey players.

Gymnastics

gymnastics facts Dating back to ancient Greece, Gymnastics has a remarkable history that is full of little known facts.

1 2 3 4 5

Gymnastics is one of the oldest sports. Some historians believe ancient Greeks and Romans prepared their young men for war through a form of gymnastics activities to improve skills to mount and dismount their horses. Total Sportek ranked Gymnastics as the fourth most difficult sport, just behind, boxing, mixed martial arts (MMA) and rugby. The oldest elite gymnast is Oksana Chusovitina, born in 1975 and has competed in 7 Olympics Games between 1992 – 2016. The first perfect score of 10 was awarded to Nadia Comaneci at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. Decades later, however, the judging system has evolved to a more complex system making it hard for any gymnast to achieve a perfect score. Gymnastics is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a foundation sport for all other sports. It is one of the few sports that encourage both gross and fine motor skills in which it teaches power, strength, flexibility, agility and balance.

The Arbutus Club’s Gymnastics Program follows the Canadian Long Term Athlete Development Plan. Gym Start is our early years program and has four levels, which is directed to our members who are 9 months or crawling to 6 years of age and is a multi movement approach to help build a foundation of fundamental skills that will complement all sports. Then our very popular Winit Program continues to build upon that strong Gym Start foundation, continuing to explore more complex movement patterns as each child progresses through each level in a traditional gymnastics class. However, not keen on a traditional gymnastics class, we offer a GymFit Xtreme. GymFit Extreme is a high energy class that incorporates challenging obstacle courses keeping the kids moving and smiling. It is the perfect cross training program, specifically designed to enhance strength, agility, power and endurance for school aged kids.

Be sure to enrol your child in a class for the Winter session and feel free to contact Nicole McNaught at nmcnaught@arbutusclub.com if you have any questions regarding the Arbutus Club Gymnastics programs.

Youth

megan gallant Returns as Youth, Family & Events Coordinator

We are pleased to have Megan Gallant return as our Youth, Family & Events Coordinator. Megan started as a Youth Leader in 2015 and has held many roles during her time here with the Children and Youth Departments. In 2017 Megan graduated from UBC with her Bachelor of Kinesiology, with a special interest in early childhood development and the impact that physical activity has on healthy development. Megan loves using her background to find creative ways to make exercise fun for all ages. When she isn’t working, Megan loves staying active by playing soccer and running. In fact, Megan has been playing soccer for 20 years. Megan also loves to travel and just this past year has hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, camped in the Amazon Rainforest, and visited the koalas and kangaroos in Australia. She is looking forward to ensuring the new Shaughnessy Room and new South Gymnasium is a fun and welcoming space for members of all ages when it re-opens in 2020, and keeping the excitement going in birthdays, camps and special family events. If you have ideas, comments or feedback for any of these activities, contact Megan at mgallant@arbutusclub.com.

a little kindness goes a long way On the last Wednesday of every February, our children and youth wear pink to celebrate diversity and spread a message that those who are victims of bullying are not alone. Pink Shirt Day is an amazing and simple way to show that we will not tolerate bullying in our homes, our classrooms, or in our communities. Each year the Youth Room celebrates by spreading messages of kindness and compassion and having those important conversations about what bullying looks and feels like so that our children can learn to recognize the signs. This kindness campaign is amazing, but how can we challenge our youth to spread kindness every day of the year? Here are some simple acts of kindness that our children and youth can practice every day: 1. Smile! Happy people make people happy. This is an incredibly easy thing to do every day and can completely change someone’s mood entirely. 2. Share a positive experience. At the end of the day, go around the dinner table and share a positive thing that happened during your day! 3. Volunteer with an animal shelter. Our furry friends need kindness too!

20

The Bark s p r i n g

2020

4. Play with a new friend during lunch time. Getting to know new people is a great way of understanding how we are all different in unique ways and to celebrate our differences 5. Donate your old books, toys or clothes to someone in need. There are lots of organizations that are always looking for donations for children in need.

Studies also show kids who engage in random acts of kindness are more likely to be accepted by their peers. Their good deeds improve their wellbeing and help them develop positive perceptions of their world.

Children's Centre Youth Spring Break Camps Springtime means fun activities for our youth during Spring Break. The Youth Department offers fun and exciting camps offered daily for 6-12 year olds over Spring Break, so they can attend daily or every day. The youth have had some awesome out-trips in past years including adventures at Apex Trampoline Park, private tours of an Italian gelato store, and pizza making class at Rocky Mountain Flatbread and a ton of fun here at the Club with swimming, crafts, games and sports. Registration for Spring Break Camps opens in GameTime at 7:00am on Tuesday, February 25th so be sure to sign up early. For more details about the camp itinerary contact Megan Gallant at mgallant@arbutusclub.com.

Family Fun Centre Update Next to the winter holidays, it is the most wonderful time of the year when we re-open the Family Fun Centre. What exactly is the Family Fun Centre? The Family Fun Centre is a fun, safe space for children and their families to enjoy from April to August each year. The Mini Rink will transform from an ice surface to a turfed fun zone for children and youth to enjoy bouncy castles, play soccer games and even enjoy summer movies on our big inflatable screen. This year, the new South Gymnasium will also be available for families to come to shoot hoops, kick a soccer ball and more. Our annual Spring Carnival on Saturday, April 4th will kick off the re-opening of the Family Fun Centre in 2020. Stay tuned for more details.

Etiquette and Rules Foot faults are not good. We receive many comments from people about partners and opponents who foot fault when they play. In most cases, players are not aware they are foot faulting, but perhaps ask your coach to see if you are. A coach can help you to stop foot faulting. Please remember to wear tennis attire on the court. We do expect players to have shorts and shirts that are made for tennis, and at this point, we still expect a skirt to be worn over tights.

Senior Men's Doubles Early every weekday morning, the tennis courts swarm with senior men doubles players. On each of these days, between 7:30 and 9:00am, there are as many as 20 senior players on the courts, enjoying friendly rivalry before gathering upstairs for coffee. This group consists of about 50 active players, and for many, the animated discussion over a cup or two of coffee is the highlight of their day. On December 5th this senior men’s tennis group celebrated its annual Christmas Luncheon. The Club put on an excellent banquet and our members supplied camaraderie, hilarity and good cheer. Pat Macken entertained us with his usual tennis trivia quiz and provided tennis balls to each member. Bruce Hirtle supplied several bottles of wine from his Spearhead Winery cellars. This year’s special award to the player who best exhibits positive attitude and good sportsmanship on the courts was awarded to Gordon Hunter. The Senior Men’s Tennis Group welcomes new players, at all levels. For more information, please contact Gerry Hildebrand at dgerryh@gmail.com

The Arbutus Club Welcomes New Head Squash Pro

drew henderson After spending a year in England watching his father play on the Oxford University squash team, young Drew was hooked on squash. When he moved to Victoria BC, he was coached by Phil Green and started playing competitive junior squash alongside his three brothers and one sister. Soon most junior tournaments had a few Henderson’s in them. Competing at the Provincial and National Level, Drew quickly became one of the top players on Vancouver Island and started playing in professional events. Some career highlights include winning the 2017 Pacific Coast Open, 2016 Provincial A Championships and competing against Gregory Gaultier (World #1) in an exhibition match. Coaching Squash began in Victoria with Ben Uliana, and after graduating from an Acting School, Drew moved to Vancouver to pursue a career in squash coaching whilst working as an actor for film and TV. He’s been in films, TV movies, and a TV show. He became the Assistant Pro at the Bentall Athletic Centre, the Vancouver Lawn and Tennis Club, and has assisted coaching the BC’s top juniors at Evergreen Squash Club.

Prioritizing his career in coaching, he recently spent time in Toronto coaching at the Badminton & Racquet Club and the Toronto Cricket Club, where he has learned from some of the industry’s best pros. These experiences enabled Drew to work towards attaining his Club Pro coaching certification. Drew is extremely excited to begin his Head Pro career at The Arbutus Club and to share his knowledge and passion for squash in the years to come. He loves working with juniors and adults and creating fun and exciting programs and events that members will look forward to. He’s confident that in the coming years the Arbutus squash community will truly thrive.

For more information about how you can get involved with Squash at the Club such as joining a program, league or trying some private lessons, contact Drew at dhenderson@arbutusclub.com or 604-269-8892.

The Arbutus Academy of Dance

Promoting the Arts at The Arbutus Club Interview with Marlene Hershfield Director of Dance

W E S AT D O W N W I T H M A R L E N E H E R S H F I E L D TO TA L K A B O U T T H E A R B U T U S A C A D E M Y OF DANCE, AN ARBUTUS CLUB PROGRAM W I T H A LO N G H I S TO RY, O N E O F C H A N G E , G R O W T H , A N D PA S S I O N F O R T H E A R T S .

Can you tell us a little about your background?

MH

In 1978, I was a single girl, living in Kits, fresh from The Royal Ballet of London, England with great ideas. I was teaching ballet and jazz for studios around Vancouver mainland. Yet, I was looking for an opportunity to develop a dance program that really reflected my passion for the arts and my budding creativity. I knew about The Arbutus Club because as a girl, I grew up skating at our reciprocal club, The Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton Alberta. (My skating teacher there advised my mother to get me into dance, and obviously she did!) I knew The Arbutus Club had a thriving figure skating program, but I wondered about a dance program. I thought it could be the perfect place for a young dancer to develop a new program.

Dance

Eager and ambitious, I approached The Arbutus Club’s Recreational Services Manager at that time and proposed a dance program. I remember the day vividly, it was 1978 and pouring rain. Expressing my opinion that the Club needed the arts and the arts needed the Club, I told him that I was the girl who could make it possible and committed to getting it started. 40 years later, it is one of the Club’s most popular programs.

Dance

What was the dance program like then? How has it changed?

MH

It has changed, tremendously! It began as a class of 8 girls practicing plie’s and jetes in a small studio in the basement of The Arbutus Club. Now, we are housed in a beautiful facility that really reflects the development and refinement of our program today. Over the past 40 years, we have taught hundreds of students in a variety of dance disciplines – Theatre, Hip Hop, Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Breakdance, and Modern Dance.

Can you tell us about how you found Tammy van Zyl costume designer, and the beautiful costumes she provides?

MH

For many years, I had to piece costumes together. I had someone making them in Victoria BC, I approached other dance studios and borrowed. I scrambled to pull it all together and then I had to make the costumes actually fit! I needed to get pretty creative sometimes. Then, about 10 years ago, I met Tammy through the dance community in Vancouver and asked her to work with me. Tammy is a real artist, and we are so lucky to showcase her work.

The Arbutus Club motto is “Putting Families First”. How does this influence you and the culture of The Arbutus Academy of Dance?

MH

There are many families who have been a part of our dance program throughout the generations. Many Arbutus Club dancers are now mothers themselves and have young performers in The Arbutus Academy of Dance. I feel fortunate to know a lot of the families within the dance community here at the Club. At The Arbutus Academy of Dance you become part of a family that encourages and supports one another.

Can you tell us a little about your experience juggling home life and your role at the Club?

MH

I have had the privilege of growing my own personal life along-side the growth of the program and the Club. 41 years later and I’m still here! I am a wife of 40 years, a mother to 3, and a grandmother to 6. What a remarkable journey.

Can you tell us about your teachers?

MH

None of this would be possible without the passion, grit, dedication and stamina of my teaching staff. I’m very grateful for their contributions, commitment and support. Their love of dance is contagious. I would like to make special mention of one of our very capable, talented and dedicated ballet teachers, Toresa Ewaniuk. Toresa was recently awarded one of the highest honours by the Cecchetti Society of Canada - the Margaret Saul Scholarship Award. It was a unanimous decision by the society because Toresa is so valuable to ballet in Canada. This award benefits Toresa, and all of her students here, at The Arbutus Club. I feel so privileged to work with her all these years.

Are there any graduates or affiliates of The Arbutus Academy of Dance you would like to mention?

MH

15 years ago, The Arbutus Club dance department lost our Committee Chair, and very dear friend, Stephanie Mackie. To honor her memory an award was established, The Spirit of Stephanie Award. This award was established to recognize the achievements of a dancer who embodies the qualities of discipline, commitment, passion and dedication so beautifully exemplified by Stephanie Mackie. I would also like to mention three graduates and friends of mine. Stephanie Mackie’s daughter Mercedes Mackie, Beth Rizardo and Lucy Adirim - all former students of The Arbutus Academy of Dance. Now adults in their 20’s and 30’s, these wonderful ladies continue to give back to the program. They show up for every dress rehearsal and every show to do hair and make-up. Honestly, they can do 20 buns for a class of 30 in 20 minutes!

Dance

Beth and Lucy both completed their advanced Ballet Exams while they were students, and along with Mercedes, they are extremely dedicated to helping me and supporting the program. I consider each of them my good friend and we often visit at my house during the summertime over tea.

What advice can you share with aspiring dancers?

MH

One of the most important things to do is to actively participate in your appreciation for the arts. The arts are for everyone! So, go to the ballet, go to the theatre, go to hear the symphony. Learn who the performers are, who the dancers are, and follow their careers. I’m afraid we are going to lose a whole generation of individuals if we don’t help them connect with the arts. It is so important for young people to attend arts events, and to support the arts by attending the shows. I know going to hockey games is popular, but if you love dance, support the performing arts! Plan to attend some of these events with your friends, have fun and enjoy the experience.

What advice can you share with the families of young dancers, and how can they best support their aspiring dancers?

MH

There are many reasons parents choose to enroll their children in dance classes — for the health benefits, to expand their creativity, or simply because they love the art of dance. Dance classes can teach a child self-confidence, self-discipline, poise, and grace. Most importantly, dance classes are fun! It's with passion that we equip students to excel, and to find the joy! We offer a wide range of Dance, including Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Breakdance to all ages, both for serious students and for those who just want to experience the beauty and energy of dance. I am very happy to work with parents to figure out a schedule that works so that aspiring dancers can discover their individual artistic voice in the Club’s creative environment.

JoieFarm, Naramata Bench In 2020, the theme for Bacchus to Basics will be ‘Best of BC’! What better way to celebrate an exceptional year than by exploring our own incredible backyard? Did you know that there are over 350 licensed wineries in British Columbia and over 900 vineyards? Did you know that BC wineries play host to over one million visitors each year and contribute nearly three billion dollars annually to the economy? It will be my pleasure to explore some of the best wines BC has to offer and introduce you to the fantastic people behind them.

JoieFarm Winery

featured winery : joiefarm Joie vineyard and winery, or JoieFarm as they call it, has now existed for 16 years and has captured the spirit of the Naramata Bench with overwhelming success. Joie (pronounced ‘zh-wah’) means ‘joy’ in French; how perfect as to represent their credo ‘the art of good living through the joy of wine and food’! The very first wine that Joie ever created was named ‘A Noble Blend.’ This name resonates for two reasons: one, the owner/winemaker is named Heidi Noble, and two, A Noble Blend represents their philosophy of ‘European-inspired wines for west coast living.’ JoieFarm makes A Noble Blend in the spirit of the traditional Germanic varietal blend of the Alsace region of France. This traditional blend is known as Edelzwicker in German, which directly translates to ‘a noble blend.’ This wine was created out of respect for old-world traditions while learning how to make wine in the relatively young, new-world winemaking region of the Okanagan Valley. Blending allows the winemaker to utilize different characteristics of each variety (or of the same variety from different growing sites) in order to help achieve natural balance as well as add greater complexity to the wine. This aromatic white wine is a blend of 47% Gewürztraminer, 31% Riesling, 9% Pinot Auxerrois, 8% Pinot Blanc, and 4% Muscat. Heidi has a particular interest in making wines that are expressive of cool-climate, lake-moderated desert terroir and has a fairly non-interventionist approach to winemaking. JoieFarm works exclusively with the grape varieties of Alsace, Burgundy, and Champagne, which thrive in the cool-climate, desert landscape of the Okanagan Valley. Heidi’s wines are known for their freshness, consistency, natural balance, and complexity. Starting with the vineyard, Heidi has an interest in making wine as naturally as possible, while using the wisdom of her past vintages to ensure JoieFarm’s wines are consistently pleasing.

pairings

This aromatic wine displays notes of white flowers and spices on the nose. It is medium bodied and well balanced with a moderate alcohol content. The wine shows pronounced aromas of guava, nutmeg, and cloves. This fresh fruit and spiciness continues on the palate and opens up with flavours of tangerine, passionfruit, and coriander carrying through to a grapefruitfresh, mouthwatering finish. A Noble Blend’s most traditional pairings include tarte flambée or choucroute (an Alsatian recipe for preparing cabbage with sausages and other salted meats and charcuterie, and often potatoes), but it is also an excellent accompaniment to the modern cuisine of the Pacific Northwest. The subtle sweetness of the wine allows it to pair well with spicy dishes and Asianinfluenced flavours such as ginger.

what makes joiefarm unique ? Heidi Noble is a self-taught winemaker, so how’s that for unique? She completed her Sommelier designation and went on to work with a wine agency focusing on a European portfolio. She completed culinary school and has worked with some of Vancouver’s top restaurants. Amongst many other projects she is now in the process of writing her second book! Did I mention that she even makes the sales calls? The first time that I ever met Heidi, we had coordinated to meet at the Club and review Joie’s new vintages. At the time, I had no idea that Heidi was the actual owner and winemaker herself. I thought she was a sales agent representing JoieFarm. It wasn’t long into our conversation that something wasn’t quite right; I’d quite possibly never met anyone so widely knowledgeable, passionate and engaged. The penny quickly dropped as to her true identity! What else makes Joie unique? Well, last but not least, meet the winery dogs! Lily, Jigger, and Barney.

Green Initiatives

Earth Day in The Bistro

It has been nearly 50 years since the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 and we have come a long way since the first calls for environmental protection. Now we have many organizations and programs dedicated to protecting the earth; our home. However, we still have a long way to go. While environmentalism is a global effort, we all can play a role. From energy conservation and efficiency to the use of sustainable products. Even though these efforts may seem small, the collective impact on our environment is significant. The Arbutus Club is committed to becoming a greener, more environment conscious club with several green intitiatives in development. The Bistro is leading the way evaluating the waste they produce and their impact on the environment.

April 22

As the most frequented food and beverage outlet in the Club, The Bistro has options for dining in or taking out. Our members have busy family lives and with this comes the need for take out items or grab and go. However, this results in The Bistro producing a considerable amount of waste. Did you know that The Bistro uses 18,000 disposable forks, 88,000 plastic cups (without lids), 13,530 sandwich boxes, and 6,750 hard plastic containers every year? While some of our takeout containers are recycleable, a significant proportion ultimately ends up in a garbage bin. This Earth Day, The Bistro will begin taking steps to green it forward with the introduction of several new environmentally friendly practices that include:

what we are doing Elimination of Single-Use Plastic Sandwich Containers The Bistro will be introducing paper wrapped sandwiches, allowing for the wrapping to be reycled.

Single-Use Condiment Packets Will Phased Out for Eco-Friendly Alternatives The Bistro will begin this change by introducing a new ketchup and mustard dispenser in the coming months.

Bring Your Own Container Campaign All bar hot drinks will be served in a ceramic mug. Better yet, bring your own mug toget a ten cent discount on espresso or espresso alternatives. Requests for takeout will be placed in a recycleable cup.

More around the club The Adult Changerooms no longer carry single use, disposable razors. We encourage Members to bring a reuseable razor to help us decrease our waste.

The Children’s Centre preschool group will upcycle crayons to make new Earth Day ones and also pot little plants for children to take home and grow their own vegetable.

Physio & Wellness

new pbfr training Physiotherapy and Wellness offers members a new piece of technology known as Personalized Blood Flow Restriction Training. What Is PBFR? PBFR exercise is one of the newer developments in performance and sport rehabilitation. It is finally entering Physiotherapy in Canada after gaining popularity in the United States, particularly in the North American Sports world. Many NHL, NBA, NFL, and MLB sports teams have incorporated this device into their rehabilitation rotation, including the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, and Seattle Seahawks, amongst many others. With the PBFR technique, anyone who has sustained an injury will still be able to build and maintain muscle strength by using low loads without stressing the injured tissue. Basically, light resistance exercise under PBFR tricks the body into thinking it is exercising at high intensity. The PBFR unit keeps the blood in the exercising limb, creating an environment metabolically similar to that seen during high

50

The Bark s p r i n g

2020

intensity exercise. A few biomechanical pathways appear to occur with PBFR including increased growth hormone and protein activation, as well as mechanisms that involve muscle stem cell activation, cellular swelling, and activation of fast twitch muscle fibres. These mechanisms likely all work together to produce the benefits seen with PBFR. A great deal of research finds that PBFR is more effective at building muscular strength than low-load resistance exercise alone and is similar to the effects of high-intensity training. It also concludes that PBFR is more tolerable for patients who find exercise painful because the injured joints and structures are not put under non-tolerable loads. Incorporating the BFR technique along with sport injury exercise prescription and traditional physiotherapy methods have also shown to improve rehabilitation recovery rates.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Erin Frost for her time here as a Massage Therapist at the Arbutus Club Wellness Clinic. Erin’s last day was in January of this year. Erin has been part of The Arbutus Club for over 12 years! She has been a tremendous asset to the clinic and a phenomenal colleague and friend. Erin will be moving back to North Vancouver, looking to spend more time with Issac, her soon to be 2 year old son, and Mark as well.
