THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Members, Happy New Year! I hope this message finds you in high spirits and good health. I want to begin by thanking our incredible staff for their outstanding efforts in delivering a memorable holiday season. From Breakfast with Santa, the Christmas Lunch Buffet, the Snowball Bash, the NYE Party, and more, members fully embraced the holiday magic at The Club. I am pleased to report that the CEO transition went exceptionally well. Over the past four months, Larry has played a pivotal role in our Club’s operations, actively engaging with members, working closely with the management team, and participating in member events. The Arbutus team and the Executive Committee have banded together to ensure a smooth transition. Also, Larry has been working with the team to enhance member services. We look forward to the continued positive impact of his leadership in the coming months. With only four more months remaining in the Board term, the House and Activity Committees have diligently fulfilled their mandates. After the Board decided to limit new membership applications to a maximum of 36 for 2024, the Ad-Hoc Membership Committee recently convened to establish a framework for managing this process. The Committee engaged in a thorough assessment of various approaches before making a formal recommendation to the Board. The devised strategy outlines a transparent and equitable method for interested parties to apply for the available memberships. All those who have shown an expression of interest have been notified about the process. The Long Range Planning & Development Committee is progressing significantly in our master planning initiative. They have recently issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to identify an architectural design firm to assist in developing The Club’s long-term vision, considering the existing condition and expected lifespan of our buildings and their strategic location to meet our membership’s current and future needs. An Evaluation Committee will assist the Committee in selecting the most suitable firm for this significant task. As we embark on this planning journey, we are committed to a thorough and collaborative process. The selected firm, alongside the Committee, will engage extensively with members and management to ensure that the evolving plan resonates with The Club’s aspirations and meets the diverse needs of our community.

The Bark WINTER 2024
The planning process, by its nature, is comprehensive and will span approximately two years. During this time, we will be working meticulously to develop a master plan that reflects our collective vision. We anticipate involving members throughout the process to gather insights and feedback, reinforcing our commitment to a Club that genuinely reflects the desires of its members. As we progress through this exciting fact-finding phase, look for updates in the coming months. The Board has approved the selection of this year’s Nominating Committee members in line with The Club’s Constitution and Bylaws. The Committee will begin assessing and selecting nominees for the 2024/2025 Board of Directors. This process begins early to allow the Committee adequate time to identify and consider strong candidates for the Board. They will also seek individuals interested in serving on our Club’s House or Activity Committees. Members will soon receive the Nominating Committee List and an invitation to submit written suggestions for potential Board or committee candidates. A lot is happening at The Club in February, brought to you by our incredible Food and Beverage team. Be sure to check out pages 28 and 29 for all the event details. Two new standouts include the Groundhog Day Friday Night Dance Party on February 2, with complimentary drinks until 10:00 pm. DJ Hairdo will be spinning your favourite tunes under the pergola in the Quilchena Terrace. Next, it’s a family affair with the Simply Red Valentine’s Family Ball on February 16. Bring the whole family for a sumptuous buffet dinner, a decadent chocolate buffet, a build-your-own hot chocolate station, and a boogaloo dance party with DJ Bro Mance. I wish you all the best in 2024! Warm regards,

The Bark WINTER 2024
Our employee feedback survey in September 2023 revealed that it's the people at The Club that make work great. Our staff emphasized the importance of engagement events and team outings in boosting team morale.
CLUB LIFE
Our incredible staff are family focused and hardworking people, who embody the motto, “putting families first”. Those who are engaged with their jobs and colleagues work harder and smarter. Here are some incredible employees from our team.
Gay Dioneda REGISTRATION COORDINATOR Meet Gay Dioneda, our vibrant Registration Coordinator with 17 years of dedicated service at The Club. Starting as a Bistro Server, she’s evolved into an indispensable team member. Happiness, for Gay, lies in the simple joys: hugs from her kids, appreciation at work and home, and sharing meals with loved ones. Gay expresses gratitude for the energy she gains from working with her amazing team. “The Club is my second home, and I aim to make the best of it!” She enjoys keeping things light, indulging in singing and dancing when no one is around. A superstar in her own right, Gay adeptly handles all tasks and eagerly assists members and staff alike. She credits her mom as her role model, imparting strength, hard work, and efficiency in all she does. “My mom inspired me in many ways. I love and miss her.” Outside of work, Gay treasures family time, with a standout memory of a post-pandemic family trip to Universal Studios in California. Visit Gay at the Recreation Services Office, where her cheerful spirit awaits by the North Gym.
Ari Garcia HR GENERALIST Ari Garcia, our passionate HR Generalist, joined the team in August 2022 after working at the Bistro. Originally from Guanajuato, Mexico, she relocated to Canada with her fiancé just before the pandemic. With two HR degrees and over six years of experience, Ari’s favourite aspect of HR is ensuring staff feel happy and appreciated. One of her standout initiatives was her idea to send out Valentine cards to staff, featuring positive feedback from performance reviews. She designed a beautiful card, including employee compliments, and distributed it to each employee. It was a thoughtful gesture that allowed employees to feel appreciated by their co-workers and managers. Ari inherited her strong work ethic from her parents. They instilled in her the importance of discipline in achieving goals. She holds a close bond with both her sisters and her parents. Having moved away from her family, Ari truly cherishes spending time with her loved ones. An early riser, Ari enjoys working out before starting her day: “I love running and tuning out for a bit.” Exercising before work helps her enhance focus and engagement. Ari excels as an attentive listener and a capable leader. Since transitioning to our HR department, she employs her skills to connect with all staff, resolve challenges and disputes, and promote engagement events and activities. ♦

The Friday I’m in love with is the third Friday in November. That’s because, while we are paraphrasing the old hit by The Cure, that’s the day when Grapes and Hops occurs every year.
I
t has become the most anticipated event of the year on the Arbutus Club’s calendar, and this year’s edition, Luvafair, did not disappoint. As an ode to the era of post-punk and new wave, to a nightclub where all ages, affinities, and dance moves were welcome, the Luvafair theme provided a scintillating backdrop to a rollicking night of food, grog, grape, and music. The theme of alternative music flowed throughout the venues as members were welcomed into the space through a nightclub tunnel of musical act posters of days of yore, ranging from Blondie to Bowie with the Specials thrown in for good three-quarter beat ska measure. Once inside the South Gymnasium, the transformed space pulsed with multimedia screens aglow with stills of bands that mattered, twenty-seven stations of bevvies of all concoctions, eleven unparalleled food stations as the indomitable human energy drink provided the backbone heartbeat, the one and only crimson-haired DJ Barron. “It’s just amazing to be here with all my friends and my kids, all at the same time,” marveled Karen Macdonald. “Generations partying together as one, what a wonderful Club experience. The kids grew up here, now they are enjoying it with us and their friends. It’s just fantastic.”

Chef Michael threw down like a latter-day Stewart Copeland banging the skins for Sting and the Police with stations featuring local smoked meat from Estrella’s, Iberian paella to die for, a duck breast pancake people are still beaking about, oysters Rockefeller, an insane pork belly bao bun, and a chocolate pate you wanted to faceplant into. The event may be called Grapes and Hops, but it’s really, truly, madly, deeply about the food for so many members.
"

As the food portion began its denouement, DJ Barron played like the Pied Piper and led partygoers who wanted to keep on keeping on to the other rooms offering experiences, the Chill Lounge in The Fireside, and the Wine Rave in the brand new Quilchena Terrace and Pergola. Cool vibes, martinis, and wines by the bottle helped the talkative set unwind in the Fireside with DJ Chucky and their friends. Meanwhile, a full-on nightclub broke out in the Quilchena Terrace at the Wine Rave as DJ Barron unleashed her Taylor Swift-laced tirade on the dancefloor, much to the delight of the assembled throng of dancers. The new bar flowed freely and was packed all night, interrupted only briefly by when a pizza bomb arrived courtesy of The Club and Minerva’s Pizza, everyone’s local favourite for Greek pies, to complete the party night in the traditional style. All great love affairs must end, and so did this one, but this party left us with a kit of memories we can cherish for generations, throughout the generations of members who made it feel so cool to be there, at the Luvafair, as a part of it all, just one more time. ♦

It was a graveyard smash! Goblins and ghouls alike flocked to The Club on Halloween weekend for the spine-tingling Monster Mash party. Not for the faint of heart, this gathering was a hauntingly good time for all who attended. On Sunday, October 29, The Arbutus Club transformed into a haunted house! The Youth Room was taken over by Wednesday Addams, crafting her own dark and gloomy dorm room (though it seemed her roommate Enid had a say, with half the room being pink). From the back half of the Youth Room, the echoing cackles of witches brewing potions over a bubbling green cauldron could be heard. The gymnasium lights dimmed as members entered the haunted carnival maze or ventured to the graveyard to pay a visit to the unfortunate souls resting there. Dracula set up shop, displaying his artifacts to those brave enough to step into his study. Upstairs in our eerie banquet rooms, Jack Skellington performed “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” treating members to popcorn and candy. Members who participated in the mystery scavenger hunt had the chance to explore every room at the event, seeking clues and unraveling riddles, and were rewarded with a ‘boo box’ filled with delicious treats! The event culminated in an amazing performance by Pacific Fairytales. The show commenced with a dance party, led by Wednesday Addams

The grand finale brought all performers together to belt out ‘The Monster Mash’ (Dracula even taught us his ‘Transylvania Twist’), and all our little princesses, superheroes, monsters, and more showcased their best dance moves! O
n Thursday, November 9, we hosted our very first Arbutus Racquets Party. Far from your average gathering, it was a celebration of camaraderie, delectable food, refreshing drinks, and, of course, the exhilarating world of racquet sports! A total of 60 members of all levels and sporting backgrounds enjoyed playing squash, pickleball, badminton, table tennis, and even lawn games. Our racquets club professionals, including the incredible Dave Glass, our resident Squash and Pickleball Club Pro, the skilled Badminton Coach Hossein Farghadani, and the talented Table Tennis Professional Hollie Lau from The Granite Club in Toronto, ensured that everyone had a smashing time with expert guidance, tips, and demonstrations. Breaking the ice, members were sorted into five teams of 12 individuals, and everyone had the chance to dip their toes into each sport for 20 minutes. The highlight of the evening? An exhibition squash match featuring former Arbutus Club Champions Aly Thobani and Connor Lukas, with a surprise appearance by none other than Dave Glass himself. The crowd was left in awe of the high level of play, inspiring many to hit the courts themselves.
“This was one of the best events I’ve experienced since becoming a member in 1982. The organisers created a positive experience regardless of skill level, and I loved that it was all about fun, not competition. The mix of young and old members was fantastic, and the food at The Club was as excellent as expected!”
Prizes flowed like confetti, with lucky members snagging items such as a Gearbox Pickleball Paddle and free private racquet lessons. Team 1 emerged victorious, not just for their athletic prowess but for embodying the most fun and team spirit.
The Lounge between the North Gymnasium and the Squash Courts is now open every day to all Club members, providing the perfect space to mingle. With squash, table tennis, pickleball, and badminton readily available, we’re eager to see more cross-pollination between these racquet groups.
The heart of the event was all about fostering connections, trying out new sports, and, above all, having a blast! One anonymous survey respondent summed it up perfectly:
A massive shout-out to the dedicated squash and pickleball committees whose voluntary time and efforts made this event a smashing success! Here’s to more unforgettable gatherings in the future. ♦

Gardening
It’s a new year for a new garden! Our resident gardener, Tina Phillips, provides you with some useful tips to make your garden dreams blossom.
january
Plant locations. Why not start by picking out the perfect sunny spots for your plants? Knowing their sunlight needs is key before diving into your full garden plan.
Seed care. When you’re storing seeds for future planting, it’s a great
idea to label them with the date and keep them in a cool spot. Remember to check the seed packages and toss out any that are a couple of years old, as older seeds tend to have lower germination rates. And hey, consider getting your seeds from a local garden center! They’re awesome for offering loads of helpful gardening tips and advice.
Pruning. Winter is the perfect season for pruning, as many trees lay dormant during this time. For specific instructions tailored to your tree species, take a moment to look them up. This period offers a great opportunity to observe your tree’s shape without its leaves. Just a few months from now, as spring arrives, you’ll witness your trees coming back to life.

Planting. By this time, we’ve got our seeds ordered, grow lights set up, and all the supplies ready for planting. Check the back of your seed packets for details on the best planting time. As a general rule, aim for 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
Hydrangea Check-Up. After mastering indoor tasks
and pruning trees, let’s focus on our beloved hydrangeas. Early spring is the time to prune two hydrangea species: the Smooth Hydrangea (Hydrangea Arborescens) and the Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea Paniculata).
Lawn Care Tips. Now, caring for our lawns
takes center stage. Although this topic could fill an entire article with various approaches, let’s keep it straightforward. If you have specific questions, don’t hesitate to ask Tina, our resident gardener, who is always happy to assist.
Easy steps for lawn care: Rake to remove thatch, the layer of dead turfgrass from the previous year.
Aerate your lawn, if need be, to allow water and air to reach the grassroots. You can rent a lawn aerator, seek professional help, or use a hand aerator for smaller lawns. While Spring isn’t the optimal time for aeration, compacted soil might necessitate spring aeration. Repair damaged spots by loosening soil in those areas.
Overseed bare patches. Fertilize by adding compost, topdressing,
or using synthetic fertilizer for quicker results. ♦

Our usual dinner service operates from Wednesday to Sunday starting at 4:00 pm, while lunch is available on Fridays from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm. WHATS NEW IN 2024 Tot Playground We have added a brand-new indoor playground in the Tot Area of our South Gymnasium. This structure is a custom design from Cedarworks that is specially designed for children aged 0-6 years and incorporates developmentally appropriate features to help build your child’s motor skills, socialise with new friends, and, most importantly, have fun!
I Can Play! We have launched a new, exciting, and innovative physical literacy program for 6–8-year-olds! The Arbutus Club I CAN PLAY program improves kids’ ability to move on land, in water, in air, and across ice. Kids learn to move to music, improve their agility, balance, coordination, and speed along with the ability to catch, jump, run, swim, and throw. Most of all, the goal of the program is to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity, improve executive function skills, and provide participants with the tools they need to be confident and competent when playing a wide range of sports.
Youth Volunteer Program
Tennis Lighting
The Arbutus Club Youth Volunteer program has been established to provide 13–18-year-old Club members the opportunity to acquire high school volunteer hour recognition, gain experience for future university applications and job opportunities, to develop leadership skills, and to help maximise Recreation Services programs, camps, and events experience for fellow members.
The lights in the tennis building are being replaced! Installation on courts 3 and 4 occurred in late December, and members can provide feedback. We will use that feedback and adjust before installing the new lights on courts 1 and 2 in the summer of 2024. This upgrade will drastically improve the tennis playing experience for members. No more glare and no more losing the ball in the lights.
Registration forms can be picked up and handed in at Reception with the opportunity to choose to volunteer within twelve different athletics and recreation departments at The Club.

O
ne can immediately sense the interconnection of resiliency, mental fortitude and uplifting energy when meeting long-time Arbutus Club member Ed Wong.
Ed has been an avid tennis fan for most of his life. He has attended all four Grand Slam tournaments, some of them 2-3 times—though Ed quickly adds, ‘but not all in the same year!’ He has also attended many Masters tournaments, including the Rogers Cup, Indian Wells, and the Italian Open. Ed is looking forward to attending the Barcelona Open and Madrid Open next year. He was most recently photographed with one of his two all-time tennis heroes Rod Laver at none other than the namesake Laver Cup. He shares with a smile that his second hero’s name is Roger something. Ed himself is an accomplished tennis player who has held the title of Shaughnessy Club Champion in Senior Men’s Doubles and Senior Mixed Doubles for the past six years. Over the last two years, Ed has been struck by a continuous series of devastating personal tragedies, all caused by cancer, which led to his return to The Arbutus Club after a hiatus. Craig Mercer, our Director of Athletics and Recreation, was then the Director of Tennis when Ed was reacquainting himself with our Tennis programs and pathways. Ed credits Craig for his support and encouragement in motivating him to participate in clinics, camps, and The Club’s City League. Since then, Ed has felt a great connection with our team of tennis professionals and The Arbutus Club tennis community.

Meet the Athlete Ed is also passionate about cycling which has led him on exciting adventures around the globe. Earlier this May, he completed a seven-day bike trip riding from the Dolomites via Lake Garda to Venice. His future cycling destinations include Kanchanaburi (of Bridge Over River Kwai fame), Morocco, and possibly Peru—the Andes to Amazon. In a remarkable display of athleticism and compassion, Ed Wong, in his 70s, is preparing to participate in his third grueling Gran Fondo-Medio bike ride—this time to specifically raise awareness for the eradication of cancer. With a passion for tennis, and a heart full of determination, Ed is ready to pedal for a cause close to his heart. The event is known for its challenging routes, competitive spirit, and demanding physical endurance. It will test his limits while raising awareness to support cancer research and treatment—a very personal cause for Ed. Ed has committed all his spare time to creating, developing, and launching his Eradicate Cancer Project. We salute Ed Wong for his unwavering dedication to eradicating cancer and being a spark that ignites inspiration! ♦
Under relentless demands in managing five estates all at once—going on for nearly two years nonstop and with no apparent end in sight—every so often, I have had to surface for fresh air and brightness. For my own health and well-being, these infrequent, periodic breaks are quite therapeutic and have become personal highlights. The most recent highlight is the RBC Gran Fondo 2023, which I’d like to share. The Club’s pool is a bustling hub of activity, and by working together, we can ensure we are creating a welcoming and safe environment for all members to enjoy.
M
aintaining a positive and inclusive environment is crucial, and it starts with being well-versed in the rules of the pool. Let’s explore these guidelines and common courtesies to ensure everyone enjoys their aquatic experience at The Club.
mindful pool use
When enjoying the pool, exercise care and consideration. With various members sharing the space, be mindful of both people and equipment. If specific areas are designated for programs, check in with staff before utilizing the space or equipment to avoid any disruptions.
shared spaces
The pool and family changerooms are communal areas. To keep these spaces accessible for all members, stow your belongings in lockers during your visit. This simple act ensures that everyone can utilize the facilities without inconvenience.
supervision for young swimmers
For the safety of all, children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. In the main pool, kids under 8 need supervision by an adult (16+) in swimwear. The tot pool and hot tub have specific guidelines for children under 5 and those between 5 and 8. Actively supervise, put away devices, and create a secure environment for our young swimmers.

RECREATION SERVICES
keep it clean
Maintain a clean environment by removing your shoes, leaving strollers in designated areas, and taking showers before entering the pool. Properly dispose of used towels, and always clean up your equipment to protect members and staff from the spread of bacteria.
pamper your kids
Ensure a hassle-free pool experience for everyone by dressing non-potty-trained children in both a disposable swim diaper and a reusable diaper cover or snug swimsuit. Layering provides an extra safeguard against accidents.
cell phone usage
Follow Club rules regarding cell phone usage. Move conversations to the Main Hall, and refrain from using devices in changerooms. While supervising children, put away your devices to focus on safety and enjoyment.
lane etiquette
Be courteous in shared spaces. Single lanes are designed for sharing, so accommodate fellow swimmers respectfully. Follow lane etiquette, stay to the right, pass safely, and let others pass when necessary. Refrain from spitting in the pool, on the deck, and in the gutters to maintain a hygienic environment.
safety first
Instill safe practices in your children by teaching them to “Stop, Look, Ask!” Ensure they understand safe depths, identify potential hazards, and seek permission before diving in. Empower your kids to make informed decisions for a secure and enjoyable swimming experience. ♦

ur youngest members can start playing as young as five years old in the Pups Hockey program and continue throughout their youth in the Minor Hockey program. But what about after these young players graduate and become young adults? Playing in the NHL may not be for everyone, so thankfully, The Arbutus Club offers two adult hockey leagues so that our members can continue to play the sport they love throughout their adulthood.
