THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Happy New Year! As I look back at the year that was, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for our amazing staff; their dedication, expertise, and passion breathe life into the Club and represents the foundation on which everything else is built. Our staff and management deserve our heartfelt thanks and our sincere respect for the difference they make each day. The Arbutus Club is regarded as one of the leading Clubs in Canada and has received recognition as a Platinum level award winner globally. Those achievements are not attributed to any iconic architectural design or any innovative infrastructure. They are the results of the environment created by the hundreds of staff that operate and maintain our facilities and lead our programs. I encourage you all to join me in finding the time to personally, thank our incredible staff. Now, looking forward I am reminded what a difference a day makes. At the stroke of midnight on December 31st, the year 2018 gave way to 2019 and provided all of us a fresh page on which to write our next chapter. The beginning of a new year magically provides many
of us with a renewed focus, energy and willpower to attempt various improvements in our lives. Be it a healthier diet, a renewed vigor for exercise, a commitment to personal growth or all the above, the new year always starts with hope. You will have noticed that the much planned and talked about Arbutus 2020 project has begun in earnest. The Club has implemented the construction plan, and we are all feeling the impacts. We have embarked on this new project with great support and goodwill by all, but the year will march forward, and along the way, we will be challenged to maintain our positive attitudes. Despite the frustrations that we may experience we must remember to conduct ourselves by the rules set forth as conditions of our membership. The result of Arbutus 2020 will be transformative, and it is critical to our long-term success. In closing, I hope that your New Year will be full of good health, good humor, good fortune, love, and laughter each and every day.

The Bark winter 2019
Family Day Weekend Family Day in BC is moving from the second to the third Monday in February starting in 2019. So that you can spend quality time with your loved ones, group programs are not scheduled to run on Saturday, February 16th through to Monday, February 18th in observance of the Family Day Statutory Holiday. Holiday weekend facility schedules will be made available online on the Club’s website under ‘Facility Schedules’. Spending time with your loved ones doesn’t have to cost anything at all. Check out these free and easy ideas to do at the Club over the long weekend:
•
Bring your children ages 5 and under to the Parent & Tot Drop-in session on Saturday, February 16th from 10am to 12pm in the Gymnasium to enjoy use of lots of great toys and bouncers.
•
Lace up your skates and bring the family out for a fun skate on the Main Rink.
•
Throw on your bathing suits and come out for a dip in the pool or try the climbing wall.
•
Drop by the Youth Room and challenge your family to a board game – they have plenty to choose from.
•
Sign out a ball at Club Reception to toss around or play floor hockey during open gym time. Club Reception also has squash or badminton racquets you can sign out.
Aquatics & First Aid
Dr. Bag Last year Iridia Medical assisted in the implementation of the Dr. Bag in our First Aid department, and it has come in handy on a few occasions. Complete with select diagnostic tools, and emergency medications any Doctor on the scene of an emergency can request the bag to be brought to the patient they are treating. Our Arbutus Club Lifeguards are obligated to stay with the patient and to rule out any life-threatening injuries prior to radioing for the Dr. Bag but can assist with finding the proper tools once the patient’s level of consciousness and ABC’s have been checked and are present.
is going quarterly in
2019
Medications such as epinephrine, insta-glucose, benedryl, naloxone, salbutamol (asthma inhaler) and other anti-histamines can be requested and administered by a member suffering from any life-threatening issues. Doctors at the Club may find that the manual blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, glucose reader or the stethoscope very useful in assessing any member in need.

Dance
FOUNDATIONS
We want to help families provide their children with strong emotional, social and physical foundations through a range of classes. Our trained Dance Instructors believe that your children’s classes should focus on developing life skills and a sense of pride and achievement through an experience that is fun. Dance Director, Marlene Hershfield, is more than happy to help you navigate to find the correct dance classes for each child. Contact Marlene at mhershfield@arbutusclub.com for more information.
Socialization Benefits In addition to being a physical activity, dancing is also a highly social activity. According to FamilyTalk Magazine, dance lessons can help children improve their social and communication skills, learn how to work as part of a team, develop a greater sense of trust and cooperation and make new friends. If your child is shy, enrolling them in dance can encourage them to reach out to other children their age and help to reduce their anxiety about new people or places.
Educational Benefits
OF DANCE CLASSES
Improved Physical Health
Improved Self-Esteem
Dancing is a highly physical activity, and children who take dance lessons regularly should expect to see a significant improvement in their overall physical health. Regular dance practice can increase your child's flexibility, range of motion, physical strength and stamina.
As children adjust to the movements and postures required in dance, they begin to get a better sense of their bodies. As they become more comfortable in their own skin, their confidence and self-esteem will also improve. Dance lessons can encourage children to foster a more positive attitude and explore their own self-expression.
Dancers at the 2012 Stars of Tomorrow
THE BENEFITS
Becoming a skilled dancer requires practice, discipline and focus, skills that can be useful in other areas of your child's life. "Dance lessons can help to spark creativity in young children and help them to develop an appreciation for the arts." FamilyTalk Magazine estimates that students who have a background in dance tend to achieve significantly higher SAT scores and do better in math and science competitions.

Youth
Meet the Youth Leaders Alanna is one of our newest Youth Leaders and we are so excited to have her as part of our team. Here are some cool facts about Alanna: What are you studying in school? Kinesiology (the study of human movement) at UBC What do you want to be when you grow up? I hope to one day work as a Physiotherapist and help athletes get better. Favorite book series? Harry Potter – hands down. Fun Fact? I have been swimming with sting rays.
Memorable Moments! We had such a blast this past Fall at our two spooktacular Halloween events. We had a Mad Scientist come in and perform some fantastic science experiments for our older youth at the Haunted Lagoon event, and the super-talented Jessie Farrell sang with Scout & Daisy at the Teeny Tiny Halloweenie Party.

Children's Centre
Why We LOVE Routine If you ever end up in the Children’s Centre hallway around noon on any week day, you will experience a wonderful buzz of parents and children mingling after class. The Children’s Centre programs are all running smoothly and the children love being in their classes. The learning that is taking place in each of these classes is immense. Every class is designed with a purpose in mind but all of them have a similar schedule so that your child can learn a daily routine. These set schedules help children orient themselves in the day. Children also build confidence knowing what comes next and often settle into the routine very nicely.
Let’s run through a day together...
1
We often begin with a classroom full of beautiful materials set up to attract the children in.
2 3
16
The Bark winter 2019
5
After individual and small group time, the children clean up together and have a snack.
We then do a circle for 3-5yr olds where children learn, share and discuss important topics.
2-3 year olds often join teachers at play.
4
6
Children aged 3-5yrs old enjoy outdoor play time.
After the learning circle, 3-4yr olds, are encouraged and guided to choose their own activity.
Children's Centre
Parent & Tot Drop-in Gym In the Fall session we work hard to help these children learn the routine. Once they become comfortable with the schedule the child’s confidence and readiness to learn increases. The teachers take pride in setting and teaching their routines as they know there is direct correlation between routine and learning.
In the dreary winter months, drop by the gymnasium on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:00am-12:00pm for these free sessions where you can introduce your little ones to active and unstructured play. There are toys, games, bikes and bouncers suitable for children age 0-5 years to run, jump, climb and enjoy time meeting other families. The winter session will run January 9 to March 16.
New Classes for Winter Wondering what’s new for 2019? Here are a few new programs we’ve added for the season:

January 10 – March 14 Thursdays, 1:30-2:30pm $100/10 sessions #12000
7
Dancing Alphabets After snack, the 3-5yrs olds get ready to go outside to play..
There are many studies available now that prove that children learn better when they have a chance to move and be active. This new innovative class will enable your child to reinforce language arts lessons through the wonderful movement of dance. Children age 2.5-4 years will learn the alphabet and improve their reading skills in a whole new way. Participants should dress comfortably, bring a healthy snack and bottle of water. January 10 – June 20 Thursdays, 1:00-3:00pm $740.30/22 sessions #14202
Arts, Aqua & Acrobats

The 2-3yr old have their circle and get ready for dismissal..

gord bennett Gymnastics For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Gord Bennett and I have been involved in the gymnastics program at The Club since 2001. I am also a member of Gymnastics Canada NT (National Team) in the role of a team official, better known as a Judge. It is a position that can be pressure-filled at times, but as the great Billie-Jean King says, “Pressure is a privilege.” Alongside the pressure, however, comes some great experiences. I get to stay involved at an elite level, in a sport that has gifted me with so many life-skills. I’m also afforded the opportunity to travel around the world to many competitions. This past Fall, I went to Peru for the Senior Pan American Team Championships in Lima. The event was lots of fun and the Canadian team composed of many first-year team members, held their own finishing just shy of the bronze medal (by 0,166) behind USA, Brazil and Mexico. After a flight back home and a brief time at The Club, I emptied the bags and re-filled them for a trip to Doha, Qatar for the World Championships. The competition was amazing – the Canadian team finished with its best ever finish in the team event, finishing fourth behind USA, Russia and China – the BIG THREE, while gaining some “revenge” on Brazil and Mexico. The program also brought home two silver medals! It was an amazing opportunity and an honour to say I was involved with the “best ever” finish by Team Canada.

Bacchus to Basics By Andrew Cornell Director of Food & Beverage
the story of port
Happy New Year! Hopefully you had the chance to enjoy a holiday lunch buffet in The Fireside or spend time with family at one of The Club’s Breakfast with Santa events. Such an incredibly busy holiday season is always worth the craziness when we as staff get to see smiles on the faces of our Members and their guests. With the new year comes reflection, for me it is genuinely difficult to believe that Bacchus to Basics will be starting its third year in 2019. If you had the chance to read any past articles, we talked about France in year one and Italy in year two. This year the theme is ‘how it’s made’ and we’ll specifically be looking into Port, Sherry, Madeira and Sake. Thanks for reading.
the story of port
How is Port Made? Port is what is known as a fortified wine, what exactly does that mean? It means that a port begins its life just as any regular table wine would. Grapes are grown on the vine and harvested at the end of the season. The grape bunches are put into a large cement vat and the grapes are traditionally trodden by foot to break the grape skins. During this process the grape juice makes contact with the skins, extracting both colour and flavour. Natural yeast mixes with sugar in the juice and the fermentation process begins converting sugar into alcohol and actually creating a normal wine. At a very specific time during fermentation a neutral grape spirit (brandy) is added, killing

STYLES OF PORT tawny port Sees long wood aging before release, good quality and very versatile as an aperitif or after dinner wine.
lbv (late bottled vintage port ) Allowed to age between four and six years in wood before bottling. A great quality and value though not as full bodied and unique as vintage port can be. This is made from a single vintage year however usually not what is considered the absolute best vintage year.
vintage port
the yeast organisms and therefore stopping the fermentation. Why stop the fermentation? Well, once the 40% alcohol spirit is added into the wine you can be certain no more alcohol is required. Stopping the fermentation really means that the winemaker is preserving sugar in the wine by not allowing the yeast to convert all of the sugar into alcohol. Once the spirit is added the alcohol by volume of the port wine has increased to about 20% and the grape spirit has diluted to 20% as it is now mixed in with the grape juice. So, in its most simple of explanations we’re left with a sweet, high in sugar, and high in alcohol fortified red wine that is known as port.
Why is Port Fortified? In a time with no electricity or temperature control port wine was made in a fortified style in order to keep it from spoiling just as meat would have been salted in order to keep it from rotting. By increasing the alcohol content in a
wine up to 20% or more drastically increases the shelf life of a wine and it's resilience. The alcohol itself is a preservative combating oxidization, high temperatures and airborne pathogens.
The pinnacle of Port! Bottled at only two years of age, not mature and ready to drink until as many as twenty years after the bottled vintage date. Only made in spectacular years from a houses best vineyards of course from the same vintage year.
Where Does Port Come From? Port is named after the city of Oporto, the town from which the wine was exported beginning its journey to England, the biggest market for most of port’s history. This is not however where grapes are grown or port wine is made. Venture deeper inland down the Douro River and eventually come upon the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. This is a truly ancient and beautiful area where native Portuguese grapes have grown for at least 2000 years. Some of the oldest vineyards are now classified as World Heritage sites. You’ll find the plantings of narrow terraces are retained by what seems likes thousands of hand built stone walls.

Often nobody else knows this but yourself, so it is important you call yourself on it. We must perform with integrity. This is far more important than winning matches and at The Arbutus Club, we are always proud to say we have a high standard of sportsmanship and honesty.
Playing a Let If your opponent has missed their first serve and has not started their second serve motion and a ball goes on your court from another, you are not obligated to let them have their first serve again. If the delay is longer than usual or disruptive in nature, you should let them have their first serve again.

H
ave you ever had the experience where you go to the gym feeling exhausted, throw around some dumbbells, run around a bit, and leave feeling just as tired? This was becoming a constant for me. We all have reasons why we keep working out, whether it is letting off steam, the results we see, or the endorphins that are released after a good workout. I was starting to lose sight about why I was even going. I had hit a rut. I needed something that would force me to focus and ultimately would force me to actually workout, instead of just standing around lifting weights. Once upon a time, I used to have a personal trainer who was quite involved in Olympic lifting outside of her personal training. At the time, Olympic lifting seemed like something out of my reach. I had a feeling that I would try it and immediately break my arm or something equivalent; however, I began to do more research on the sport. I decided that I wanted to give it a try but had no idea how to start. I went on The Arbutus Club Personal Training website to see if there would be anyone who could help get me started. Surprisingly, there were three trainers who were qualified Olympic Lifting Coaches. I contacted Robert Gibb our Personal Training Director and asked if he could teach me the basics. We had our first session together and Robert taught me how to do a clean, jerk and snatch with a light bar. Despite the exercises being low weight, I was struggling to do the movements properly. I realized that my core strength and mobility were much worse than I thought. The fact that I struggled inspired me to

keep practicing. Just after my first session, I began to sense that feeling of inspiration and satisfaction that comes back after a good workout. I had not had this feeling in what seemed like forever. It has been about a year since my first session with Robert and I have been making very slow but steady progress. Robert has been a huge support throughout this process, as well. When we don’t have a training session, he will watch videos I take and give feedback. Olympic lifting has created a series of positive changes in my physical competence outside of the gym. To improve at the sport, I must improve my core strength, posture, flexibility, and mobility. Improving in these aspects helps me keep the pain away from sitting at my desk at work all day by staying consistent with my lifting stretches. For me, Olympic lifting has ticked all the boxes of a successful and fulfilling sport. It motivates me, I see improvement, and I actually want to be doing it.

Tennis Tournament Update Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The 25 Year Club Committee wishes to let you know that the annual 25 Year Club Senior Social Tennis Tournament will not be held in 2019 and instead will be postponed until March 2020. The Committee has decided to postpone this year to enable organizers and players to revitalize, renew and regenerate. A strong contingent in the 55-65 age group can bring new excitement to this fun annual event. The Committee welcomes your comments on suggestions.
The 25 Year Club Committee is currently working on several new events for 2019 including a tour of a recycling facility (as we all strive to recycle well), and ‘Speakers Events’ on topics including housing choices for older adults; key things for ‘snowbirds’ to know for frequent travel to the United States; and active travel including cycling, hiking and multi-sport trips for travelers over 50. Stay tuned for more information on these activities. Squash
Juniors Every month, Squash Pro Ian Woodhead, awards the title of “Junior Player of the Month” to a participant in the junior programs who demonstrates commitment and improvement in the game of squash. Sara Lehman and Owen Kazimirski earned this title in September and October 2018. Sara only started playing squash when the Fall session began, and already has mastered the serve and movement to the T. Owen has been playing the game for over a year and has made the step up from Beginner to Intermediate, with big improvements in his skills. These two players and along with many other juniors in the programs are doing well in the game of squash, and it shows. Keep up the good work!
Hollyburn Silver Tournament Seven juniors, representing The Arbutus Club, participated in the Hollyburn Junior Fall Classic in November 2018. Christina Do, Matthew Do, Daniel Tiwana, Rhys Girard along with Jordan Desbrisay, Geoffrey Yee and Jaden Lee all did the Club proud. The standout performers of the weekend were Daniel Tiwana and Jaden Lee, winning the tier one and tier two consolation draws.
Adults Ladies Squash Week - Donna Barker Congratulations to winner Donna Barker on being selected by Squash BC as the draw prize winner for Women’s Squash Week. Donna won a top of the line Black Knight Racquet. After being asked by Squash BC what encouraged her to start up squash, she had these kind words to say:
A couple of years ago I started squash lessons, but like most busy people who have hectic schedules with their families, work and other hobbies, squash was one of the things that fell off the list. I credit the women’s squash week event and Ian Woodhead for motivating me to return to squash. This event for every skill level definitely inspired myself and other women to reconnect and we all had a wonderful time. Since that evening, Ian has reserved courts for the ladies on Thursday evenings and many of us plan on playing together on a regular basis.

Adult Winter Clinics We are excited to announce that we have added three adult clinics to our Winter squash program. These clinics will be themed and will focus on a specific area of your game. Each clinic will be held from 9:30-11:00am, and are $33.00/session. Limited space is available.
Sunday January 20 - Movement Learn how to move into the back corners effectively…one of the hardest arts in the sport!
Sunday February 10 – Attack vs. Defense
squash tip of the month Hitting out of the Back Corners One of the hardest shots in squash is hitting the ball out of the back corners. One common problem that people have, is that they crowd themselves and get on top of the ball. Try and give yourself space…. allow the ball to come off the back wall… don’t panic and let the racquet work into the corner.
This clinic will teach you how to use different heights at the right time during the game.
If you are too close to the ball, you will have no space to swing therefore chances of getting the shot back aren’t high.
Sunday March 3 – Volleying
If the shot is tight, and you can’t get any pace on it, try and open the racquet face and get underneath the ball, so you can use the height on the front wall to return it to the back.
The only way you will beat better players is by volleying and playing at a faster tempo. Come and learn how! Register online through iReg, or contact Ian for more information at 604-269-8892 or iwoodhead@arbutusclub.com
To master this skill, private lessons with Squash Pro, Ian Woodhead would be a great solution for more one-to-one coaching. Contact Ian at 604-269-8892 or iwoodhead@ arbutusclub.com.
