SPOTLIGHT on Ernest Williams Earnest has been a program participant in The Arc Gateway’s supported living program since 1998. He lives in a cozy three bedroom, one bath home that he purchased with FEMA funds he received after hurricane Ivan. During a recent health and safety inspection conducted by his supported living coach, a leak was discovered in his roof. He also needed a new appliance, air conditioner and water heater. Earnest’s supported living coach assisted Earnest in applying to the State Housing Partnership Program (SHIP), a program that provides funds to preserve affordable homeownership. Derrick Williams, at the Escambia County Neighborhood Enterprise Division (NED), guided Earnest through the application process. Earnest was approved for $15,500 in SHIP funds for repairs and renovations
to his home. With the help of George Bell, Housing Rehabilitation Specialist at NED, SHIP took care of all of the details. A contractor was assigned to evaluate the repairs, set priorities, schedule construction and inspections. Earnest now enjoys a leak free roof, a new air conditioning and heating system, and new water heater. He is also excited about cooking on his brand new electric range. General repairs were also done throughout the home. Earnest is very appreciative for the help he received from his supported living coach and Escambia County Neighborhood Enterprise Division. Because of the help he received he can remain living independently in the community in his own home.
