The Arc Gateway gets in on the rock trade

Colorful stones have been popping up everywhere throughout Pensacola recently, from parks and grocery stores to swimming pools and Wal-Marts. And now, The Arc Gateway is getting in on the action.

spread inspiration and motivation for unsuspecting recipients through random inspirational rocks dropped along the way.”

The Adult Enrichment Program went on a field trip on July 20 to downtown Pensacola to hide a batch of rocks they painted, and it has even set up a rock swap location at its front office.

If you see a colorfully painted rock, pick it up. Then leave it somewhere creative (a park bench, a shopping cart basket, etc.). The phenomenon can even be tracked online by taking a picture of the rock and posting it using the hashtag #PensacolaRocks. If you find any of The Arc Gateway’s rocks (you’ll see The Arc Gateway logo), use the hashtag #ArcGatewayRocks.

Painting rocks has become the latest craze, spawned from an international trend called the Kindness Rocks Project which, according to an article in the Pensacola News Journal, was “created to

If you’re reading this and are still confused, don’t worry. Here’s the scoop:

Janet McIndewar retires after 26 years The Arc Gateway is sad to announce that longtime Senior Adult Program Manager Janet McIndewar has retired. Janet leaves behind a thriving program that is enjoyed by our aging clients. She will be greatly missed, but we wish Janet the best for her retirement.

We would like to welcome Marilyn Ward, who will be replacing Janet. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and looks to fill big shoes.

The trend has been blossoming around Pensacola all summer, and the Facebook group Pensacola Rocks now hosts over 20,000 people. But you don’t have to head downtown and battle the crowds and traffic to find rocks, you can find them right here. There are some hidden throughout the Plant Nursery. To keep the craze alive at the nursery, if you take a rock, be sure to come back and leave one next time. To participate, head over to the Pollak Training Center front office or the Plant Nursery, or paint your own. Hide a rock, and spread some joy.

Senate health care bill defeated Never underestimate the power of the disabled community, which took on this civil rights fight for themselves and future generations. Thank you for all of your advocacy efforts to defeat the Senate health care bill. For months, you have been calling your Members of Congress and sharing your stories – and it made all the difference. The Arc (U.S.) is deeply grateful to all of you for your hard work to protect Medicaid. As we celebrate this victory, we remain vigilant, and continue our advocacy efforts. We are proud to be with you in this fight.

A message from Missy... Recently, I returned home from a weeklong family vacation. This year, rather than flying to our destination, we chose to drive. And, at the end of it all, we had traveled about 2,500 miles… in the same vehicle… together. On a journey of this nature, you learn a lot about the people you travel with. Some of these insights are helpful to grow relationships and make memories while others you wish you had never recognized. Many of you have had similar experiences this summer or in years past. Road trips are always an adventure. Sometimes you hit Rogers, potholes, get caught in bad weather, or get pulled over by suspicious Missy Chief Executive Officer blue lights. But other times, you smile for the camera, sing silly songs down the highway, have deep life discussions, and take in the beauty of the world around you. No matter what, the memories created are priceless. This summer, The Arc Gateway has had some adventures of its own. We are continuing to grow and learn about ourselves and those we serve. And we continue to learn about what this community has to offer. We have hit our own bumps in the road, but we always arrive at our destination safely. We even have the souvenirs to prove it. So, as we begin to plan for the upcoming month, I hope you take a moment to relax from the busy summer and get reenergized for the fall. There are many roads left to travel and we’d love for you to jump in the car with us.

Remembering a beloved supporter A longtime member of The Arc Gateway family, Frank Gilbert Cherry, died on July 19, 2017. He was 73. A well-known face in The Arc Gateway circles for 52 years, Cherry participated in many functions held by The Arc. For 30 years, he was the caller and instructor for the Pensacola Special Steppers, a group of square dancers with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Cherry spent a career helping people with I/DD. The Pensacola native began an employment program at NADEP in Pensacola; Frank Cherry attended the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in Washington, D.C.; and was the Executive Director for Independent Living of Northwest Florida (now the CIL Disability Resource Center) for 23 years. A remembrance was held on July 24 at St. Anne Catholic Church.

Take me out to the ball game Sunday, July 2, Zelica Grotto helped send approximately 50 individuals from The Arc Gateway family to a Sunday afternoon Blue Wahoos game against the Mongomery Biscuits. The Montgomery Biscuits didn’t get their first hit until the fourth inning. And the Blue Wahoos offense contributed just enough runs for a 3-2 victory. Thank you Zelica Grotto for taking us out to the ballgame.
