September 2017

A message from Missy... As some of you may know, I am originally from Charlottesville, Va. I moved there with my parents on my first birthday and continued to call it home until after I graduated from college and moved to the Florida panhandle. I am proud to be from such a wonderful place. With its history, culture and beauty, the city is an attractive and inviting place to be. Whether you are touring the grounds of the University of Virginia, exploring Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, sipping wine from a local vineyard, hiking through the Blue Ridge Mountains, or watching the fall leaves turn dozens of shades of red, orange and yellow, Charlottesville has so much to offer its residents and visitors. Like most of the nation, I watched in horror as a “Unite the Right” rally on Aug. 12 turned violent and, ultimately, deadly. I was, and continue to be, disgusted at the hatred that was shown through words and actions. I am outraged at the exhibition of intolerance, ignorance, and racial and social injustice. And while the city remains in a sensitive state of healing, I know that Charlottesville is strong enough to come through this time of adversity.

Missy Rogers,

Chief Executive Officer

We must not forget that just a few generations ago, people with disabilities were lumped into a group that was not welcomed into society. It is our duty to continue the fight for the rights of people with disabilities in our nation. Our sister agency, The Arc of the Piedmont, is located two blocks from the center of the turmoil in Charlottesville. We continue to pray for them as they remain resilient in their efforts. There is no place for this type of injustice in our world. We must not forget the past, and we must learn from our history. It is my hope that we do not sink back into a world that discriminates based on race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation or disability. We should value and embrace diversity as a cornerstone of our community. Please keep Charlottesville and its residents, many of whom are my friends, in your thoughts and prayers.

In memoriam

The Arc Gateway family was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of our dear friend and loyal supporter Carroll Dixon “Dix” Darby. Darby began his involvement with The Arc Gateway in 1969. He was not only the first director of Pollak Industries, he was also instrumental in establishing the “Dix” Darby first enclave in industry for the 1927-2017 agency. The Arc Gateway will be forever grateful for his decades of loyal service to our mission, and he will be greatly missed by us all. A celebration of life visitation is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 17 from 3-6 p.m., at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, 619 N. New Warrington Road. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Lawn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Arc Gateway Foundation, the Hadji Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund, or to the individual’s favorite charity.
