Social Media Vs Traditional Journalism Journalism is a long-established profession prevalent in society within the overwhelming majority of the world. The increase of social media over the last ten years has seen a big influence on the way during which news is reported and digested by all parties within journalism with traditional journalists taking over a nascent role of utilising social media for fundamental reasons of delivering quick content and to market their work. The rise of social media has many of us believing that journalism is slowly dwindling. As our social media networks still expand and become more accessible to people from everywhere around the planet , many question whether traditional journalism is slowly dying. According to the event of ‘online newsroom policy’, despite the many influences of technology in revolutionising the way news passes through the newsroom, the traditional routines, standards, and other cultural components of a specific newsroom dictate the company’s policies in almost precisely the same way as they used to do decades ago. Social Media within the recent years has completely changed the course of journalism. There are various news-specific applications which one can browse & read while on the go. Not only the applications, but also social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook & Instagram, on which news spreads like fire, are a fast on-the-go reads that the user finds lucrative. Reading the news is growing in popularity among the younger generation, thanks to the information-sharing capabilities and accessibility on all electronic devices. Rumours are quick to spread on such platforms resulting in misinformation. The competition is hard online and news portals want to be after one another due to cut throat competition. This might cause spread of wrong information and adversely affect the society. Even a little incident is often blown out of proportion. It doesn’t even take a second for a

news to travel viral and reach thousands of individuals. There are benefits that the naysayers don’t recognise. Social media may be a platform that reaches a huge audience, an audience that engages in interactions fueled by the news itself. The truth is that news is passed around faster than ever before, and that we participate in immediate information sharing. Consumers are satisfied by the moment gratification and straightforward access of digital news. The knowledge is delivered k in a format where the reader is offered recommendations of related articles. A journalist has several obligations engraved in their professional identity. This includes the rules to be followed that are integral to their success within the sector and writing the target truth. It is supported by a necessity to use predominantly qualitative subjects in their writing, while showing reference to the audience. The method by which we acquire news will still evolve, but our interest within the stories will never change. As journalists and consumers, we must simply embrace the inevitable truth that our modes of data distribution change in accordance to our needs. The online newspapers follow the alternatives of interactivity, rapidity and selectivity, with users having the ability to pick their favorite topics through the help of hyperlinks or newsletters. This way, newspapers open an ongoing channel between them and readers, which allows a live flow in conversations and in opportunities to offer feedback to stories. This creates the basis of personalised journalism. While online journalism is developing into an internet practice adopted by all newspapers, the concept of interactivity is arising naturally from the news industry. This quality of latest media platforms promotes the endorsement of a two-way communication model,

challenging the normal practices of journalism that support one-way communication. This contemporary journalism allows its readers to participate actively within the production of stories and allows the sending of their personalised feedback to key writers from the industry. The struggle is within the business model. Good journalists reasonably expect pays that's commensurate with the responsibilities of the work. They’re going to become computer programmers or doctors otherwise. The struggle is to pay them, and generally, to form journalism profitable enough at every level, taking from reporter to CEO and stockholder. The art of journalism and therefore the discourse that it sparks among people will never leave of favor. Our platforms may change and therefore how we convey stories may change, but journalism itself will always carry an equivalent level of importance. Strong journalists learn to adapt to societal changes while continuing to supply the daily news in people’s lives. The power for the industry to fund its own endeavors, however, grows evermore desperate. It can't be killed entirely without the death of democracy itself.

social

Women empowerment is something we talk a lot but implementation on ground seems far away from the reality. In ancient times, women were enjoying equal rights like men in society whether its related to acquiring education or learning fighting skills. There was a time when they were treated as slave even. Post British rule, in new India, national leaders and thinkers made and implemented policies for reforming the women’s current situation to give them equality in all aspects, and that helped them to grow spiritually, economically, professionally, literacy and they got awareness about their rights. Despite all this, still women face harassment and gender discrimination issues in our educated societies.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND OUR SOCIETY

Government of India is running 7 schemes for women empowerment like Mahila-e-haat, Beti Bachao and beti padhao, one step center scheme, working women hostels, swadhar greh, Step and Nari Shakti Puruskars. You must be thinking this moment, wow, government is doing a lot for women’s empowerment, but do not you think so that we must ask this question to ourselves that why they need all these schemes in 20th century. Answer is, they are surrounded by those mindsets who have strong believe that their gender is supeP-06

rior to women. In today’s date, most educated and influential families women, who are educated and working, cannot take decision independently for investing their money in bank’s fixed deposit without consulting their male family members even now, so question of discussing about decision authority in women from rural area or middle-class family does not arise. This is just an example to understand the condition of women in our society. Women empowerment cannot be measured by providing education and equal rights in getting job be it government or private sector. Women empowerment is more than this. Empowering women means to make them selfdependent to take their life decision by themselves. They can discuss or consult before taking decision, but they should not be forced to impose our ideas and suggestion to implement or execute. They should have right to take their own decisions. People learn from their own mistakes but if we will provide them always shield, they will not be confident enough to face obstacles. We must give them opportunity to learn from their even mistakes like we men learn too. This freedom of taking decision will empower their skills to take decision and strength to face their consequences even. Women deserves freedom to enjoy their chosen lifestyle without assessing them. They should be treated equally like boy. Women should not be told to stay at home in late

evening or night because they are unsafe outside, but men should be taught to respect and behave properly. Our society always tells women what to do or what not to do so that they could be protected but we do not teach lesson of morality to our boys to behave properly in front of women of any age. If we restrict women to think twice before taking steps outside in late evening or going to night shift in office, we are not empowering them by thought but giving them stressful life to manage. Why do not we ask our boys to behave properly and build psychological pressure on them by educating them values of moral acts. Why only women are there to suffer with all these daily learning doze like going outside for party, what to wear or not to wear, making friend zone and many more things. We must empower their thought process too else women cannot work freely in their professional or personal life so whole exercise of women empowering will not reach to their expected destination. Empowering does not mean that we make schemes and rule for guarding women’s right, but we must try to develop a culture in society to fix those bad practices of our society so that we will not be requiring any policy anymore. We must focus to fix issues behind illness instead of paying all attention to control the disease. Such approach will automatically fix many challenges of women.

WOMEN EMPLOYMENT AT WORKPLACE

As per one study published by statista.com; In 2019, about 20.7 percent of women were in the labor force across India, down from approximately 30 percent in 1990. This data is itself indicator of challenges in life of women at workplace. There can be multiple factors which is affecting and reason behind such a big fall in employment of women but majorly is, organization avoids hiring female employees at workplace to refrain themselves to implement schemes like maternity act, women safety rules, cab facility for pick and drop of female employee in case of late working hours and to avoid sexual harassment cases at workplace. This approach is restricting women to perform better at workplace, and this is big loss to nation as well such practices is wasting our talent. That is the reason, we are facing talent issues in our nations too. Government must ensure that women is getting equal opportunity at workplace in terms of wages, promotions, and safety. Organization must be bind by law to recruit female employees at workplace in equal proportion, and that is the June 15, 2021

only way we can create better environment for female to grow at workplace. There are few organizations which are working hard to make life easy for their female employees at workplace by providing them parents care leave, menstrual leaves, maternity leaves, providing work from home during illness of family members and other benefits like establishing POSH committee and its execution to protect them. As per Forbes India, Women hold 17% of board positions in corporate India, but only 11% leadership roles, and that happen when companies act, 2013 says it is mandatory to have at least one woman on company boards, but representation of women at workplace should not be limited to paper. We must provide women a platform to perform and translate their skills into action without being gender biased. We have many names if we want to recall in mind when women achieved those accomplishment which was earlier seen as not cup of tea of women.

WOMEN LITERACY RATE IN INDIA

Women education is important for our society and family. In last decades, women are doing great in studies, and they are securing first position in board exams too and challenging male domination which is good for nation. However, we need more improvement to empower girls to acquire education. We need to encounter ground-based challenges like lack of proper infrastructure at schools that discourage parents to send their girls to school to study like lack of proper drinking water, toilet facilities and inadequate teachers etc. are major challenges to fix. Government campaign and CSR activities by corporates at rural area can motivate parents to send their girls to school for studies after understanding the value of education in our life else generally parents taken out their girls from schools for the sake of family responsibilities. Early marriages and dowry system are also major threat to women education. Parents at rural area are not much financially sounds so they always try to focus on early marriages of girls to get rid from financial liability of girl. Such mindset needs to be educated to think beyond to analyze worth of education in life of their girl for whole life. We must generate awareness about worth of education in our life. Education gives women to power to think and make them capable to take decision for their good. Women empowerment without proper education to girl is only dream. Government is making all required step to reform the situation but initiative from us, being a part of civilized society, is demanded and expected to come in front to motivate and support this reformation. We can see the change, but it will start from us only.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT STARTS WITH SANITIZATION

We must encourage women or girl to speak about mensuration issues and problem they face alone. This is not taboo to hide but this is concerning matter in terms of health and hygiene. According to a new report by the National Family Health Survey, 62 per cent of young women in the country use cloth for menstrual protection. Women aged 15 to 24 use cloth during their periods. In Bihar, 82 per cent of the women on cloth during their period. Aforesaid figures speaks loud and clear that CSR activities and government's campaign may bring awareness in women and in mindset of society. Illiteracy level in Indian women especially in rural area is something which is becoming barrier to fill this gap. There are some NGO which are trying to reach out more and more girls schools to educate them about menstruation, especially when they are going to have their first period. Since long time, menstruation is seen as taboo to discuss. It is believed the women having June 15, 2021

periods cannot enter in kitchen or temple, surprisingly, still most of us believe and follow being a part of urban- society leave about rural area. This is natural process of female body but treatment to biological process brings feeling of guilt in women or girl at early stage of life, which invites many menstrual disorders issues. Being unaware of whole reason behind this monthly process, they find themselves different from other gender. They shy to discuss their health issues which led them to serious disease at later stage or sometime early stage. So here, we need to educate them so that they can become our change agent to communicate and educate other females by promoting awareness campaign.

CONCLUSION

We need to understand and accept that when we talk about women liberalization or empowerment to them, we are not doing any favor for women, this is their right which is being suppressed by our society since long time. We are rectifying our blunders not doing anything special for them. They do not need any special treatment, but our society needs psychological treatment for sure so that they could understand the value of women in our life. Every time we cannot treat the disease, sometimes we must identify those reasons which are spreading the disease. Equality in gender will bring balance in our eco-social system. Women should not be treated specially but genuinely for sure. If women empowerment schemes and activities is existing in our society that indicates existence of negative mindset in our society. So, if women need empowerment, then such mindset people also need treatment. Balance should exist in society. By Bristi Adhikary Society is so much advanced and growing each and every day. New technologies, new ways to earn money, new positions in jobs then why in today’s date there is no respect when it comes to respecting or allowing the female members to live independently? Let’s jump to the main part of the article RAPING A GIRL CHILD, A WOMAN OR EVEN A GIRL! The famous Nirbhaya case, Aruna Shanbaug case, Mumbai gang-rape, Asifa Bano rape, who did this to them? Why did they punish them? What did the little child of 8 Asifa did which costed her to give her life in such terrifying manner? Let’s talk about the most recent rape that happened in Ramamurthy Nagar. It was a viral video. In the viral video a gang of six people and also a woman who were brutally torturing a young girl and inserting a bottle in her private parts. She was gang raped by the accused later. Sagar, Mohemmed Baba Sheikh, Ridoy Babu, and Hakeel are the rapist and the women escaped. The accused are from Bangladesh and Ridoy Babu is the main culprit behind the who story.

Let’s get into the detail of the case:

mIt’s believed that Ridoy Babu is known and the most wanted face in Bangladesh. The girl was trapped by him in love and brought to India. The girl is not so literate and she was married in 2014. Looking at the condition Ridoy Babu brought her to India and here he runs a prostitution racket. Bangladesh police was in search of him since before. mThe video is one week old and the survivor is missing. She is hiding from the rapist. Police is still searching for her. After knowing the case, the girl was carried away by emotions. It has been a story so common in newspapers and news channels to talk. Until a new victim comes the voice remains cold. We have seen in Nirbhaya case the who nation raised voiced for justice. But did the naP-08

Rape- The most tion tried to bring any change as in making the boys of the society to respect women and girls. I have written a small note which would describe the whole scenario in simple words: ‘Hello there!!! Welcome to the society Make sure you are comfortable enough And love your body Oh!! No no don't fall for yourself because We will allow the males to rape you Make sure you are confident But not to because the oldies would make sure you are embarrassed Smile a lot, we say 'KHUSH RAHO'

But would prove your efforts are nothing and nobody give a shit then think why did you frown. If you are in problem shhhh!!! Don't make a sound Cry with others and mix with the earthly impurities in the ground Yes, you can fall in love But we will make efforts and do much of hard work to tear your heart But still your opinion does matter when it comes to marriage Welcome to the society We promise we won't cheat you Now because you are finally here June 15, 2021

cases, with over 1,200 victims in India till now. The victims face a lot a mental trauma after they face something serious. PTSD, anxiety, and depression are most common among the victims. A feeling of helplessness, shame, defectiveness, and self-blame kill the sense of trusting people around them. This intimate crime took the women and girls to stop being financially independent and achieving their dreams. Does the matter of 7 years of imprisonment really matter to the rapist? In Section 375 of Indian Penal Code, “any male, who does an intercourse with any female who is below the age of 18, with or without her consent will be constituting a Statutory Rape”. “Whoever, except in the cases provided for by sub-section, commits rape shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which shall not be less than seven years but which may be for life or for a term which may extend to ten years and shall also be liable to fine unless the women raped is his own wife and is not under twelve years of age, in which cases, he shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years or with fine or with both: Provided that the court may, for adequate and special reasons to be mentioned in the judgment, impose a sentence of imprisonment for a term of less than seven years.”. This is what the Indian Constitution clearly states. Dear BOYS AND MEN: Before you look at any girl child of 5 to an old woman in her 60’s think before you touch her that you have your mother and sister who is of the same age group as they are. If some fine day they get raped, would you regret or be happy? Rape cases are increasing not only India but in foreign countries to. Punishing the rapist is what law does to promote the peace and order but this would completely stop if male mind their own business.

This is Indian society and mindset would never change. We say men protect women, they take care of their family, they take love their sisters but no one said they could easily rape if someone else sister or mother hurt emotions, right? According to the statistics of rape cases in India, of over 338 thousand cases of crime reported against women in India, over 33 thousand were for rape in 2018 and generally rape is done by the person who is close to them. Delhi had the highest number of reported rape June 15, 2021

Knock… Knock Trick or Treat?

What makes the new India outshine everyone else even in these testing times? The answer is, the same archaic modus operandi i.e. polish where to repair and repair where to replace. Hence, the yojana(s) or the so called programs or schemes are more like a trick or treat maneuver for audience(s). Headlines and captions are concocted at the drop of a hat. Hence, it’s astonishing for those sitting in the front row. So it appears that the new India is a spectacle of wonders, a show-runner. Freshly brewed, home-baked claims of entrepreneurship, self-employment etc. has been served hot off the oven in the global village. On the contrary, the new India is trying hard to acquire the taste of educated unemployment coupled with under-employment with a mouthful of joblessness. Is this just a spin-off of the prevailing and widespread stagnation in India or a new variant which has become a pressing concern P-10

among the job-seekers and keepers alike? It appears as if the youth is at the center of a tug of war between factual(s) and forgery. When the data states unemployment rate from June 2020 has gone from 10.18% to 11.09% in May 2021 along with the loss of 3.4 million jobs in the salaried sector (CMIE); what does the top brass of bureaucracy has to offer as counter factual, when asked about unemployment breaking 45 year-old record, “If there is no job creation, as alleged, there should have logically been a great social unrest in the country, past five years have passed off without a single major protest movement.” A response from late Mr. ArunJaitley. This big fat whooper was backed up by the data which states, “High tax collections in the financial year 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 have indicated high growth”. (Scroll) Coming back to the bedrock of the ongoing issue of educated unemployment and under-employment. A situation in an economy where its existing labor force does not work full time or takes a job that does not reflect their actual

training and financial needs i.e. their job doesn’t use all their skills and education, or provides less than full time work is referred as Under-Employment. Further, educated unemployment is a plight in which the educated or skilled or highly skilled labor force is not able to find a suitable and efficient job for himself/herself. This also occurs when there is a large number of graduates or postgraduates, but limited job opportunities and limited companies. This leads to the weakening of the capacity utilization in an economy. At current the Indian economy is operating at 66.6% capacity utilization (RBI). These factors spike up the rampant joblessness across the country. We may say that after 37 years India is on the verge of reaping its demographic dividend however, the rift between the creation of jobs and existing jobs is acting like a gaping pit. The disparity between educated employment and utter unemployment is becoming a contributing factor to Inflation and Recession as well. It might come to that juncture when the June 15, 2021

youth is less of a dividend but more of a remainder of sorts. As the government(s) in order to support and sustain such huge numbers will have to plan social welfare schemes for not only unemployed workforce but also the under and educated workforce. As a result budgets will be cut from infra-development projects, education, hospitals and other welfare activities. As creation is not at par with the existing number of jobs, the highly educated and highly skilled labor force demands high wages or at some stages withhold positions or vacancies unequalled there skillset.Whereas the less educated and less skilled are paid less hence, productivity rate remains stagnant, but inequality rises along with inflation. Innovation too, suffers as industries settle on mediocre products and services as they fall short of specific skilled and trained labor force which can augment their brand value. Quality will bleed too, due to the overutilization of the less educated at minimal rates. The educated unemployed youth amounts to 2 million graduates and half a million post-graduates, and these number are on an increasing trend from primary level to post-graduation. Aspiring to become an engineer millions are joining the rat race out of which only 25%

engineering graduates are employable. The reasons vary from shortage of jobs to unsuitable jobs to nepotism even to social and cultural reasons including partaking family responsibilities at a young age. Crunching the numbers further we find thatmout of the 134 million educated employed workforce, 38% are unsatisfied; this dissatisfaction stems from unsecured nature of the job; low salary; stressful environment; qualification mismatch and similar factors. Upon review one may say that the current predicament is majorly due to the skill gap among the youth. Education in conjunction with vocational skill training is the only way to traverse this gap between employability and employment. At present employability rate may have increased from 37% to 47.38% but so has unemployment. As Ellen Wilkinson said, “Unemployment is bigger than a political party. It is a national danger and a national scandal.” In conclusion we may say that rather taking this with a pinch of salt and overate our attempt at reaping dividends we should redirect out efforts at potent sustenance, so that the existing crop yields maximum benefits.

LAKSHADWEEP A campaign named #savelakshwadeep has been launched by the residents and political parties of Lakshadweep that demands the recall of the administrator Praful Khoda Patel. It is alleged that the reforms were introduced after he took over in December 2020.

The reforms that are introduced were detrimental to the traditional, social , cultural and economic conditions of the society. It is alleged by the opposition parties that these unilatereal decisions will pose as a threat and destroy the heritage of Lakshadweep and affect many people’s livelihood. After the death of administrator Dineshwar Sharma in December 2020,Praful Khoda Patel who is the administrator of Daman and Diu was given the additional charge of Lakshadweep. A few of the reforms that have been passed are:

Prohibition of slaughter without certificate from competent authority

It has been proposed by Praful Patel, that the Lakshadweep Animal Preservation Regulation, 2021, which bans slaughter of the cow, calf, bull and bullocks. Animals should be slaughtered only at places specified for the purpose. Proposed law bans the sale and purchase of beef and its products. Persons who slaughter animals without a certificate are liable to be punished with imprisonment extending to one year and a fine of up to Rs

10,000. Besides, in February, mutton and chicken were removed from schools’ midday meal menus. Children had been provided nonvegetarian meals at Anganwadis till then.

Land regulations

The Lakshadweep Development Authority Regulation proposes changes in the existing land ownership and usage by giving sweeping, arbitrary and unchecked powers to the government to directly interfere with the islanders’ right to possess and retain their property. The government is empowered to pick any land for development activities including building, engineering, mining, quarrying and other operations have been listed under development activities.

Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2021

The proposed law gives powers to detain a person without any public disclosure for a period of up to one year. Locals fear that bill will pave the way for detention without a trial and believe that there is no requirement of such harsh laws as the island has a negligible crime rate, all the more reason why the law is suspect. NEW DELHI: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Saturday(May 29) blamed the government's alleged incompetence and lack of planning for the medical oxygen crisis during the second wave of coronavirus in the country, and said it must answer the public for the lives lost to Covid-19. Taking forward her "Zimmedaar Kaun (who is responsible)" campaign, under which she has been asking questions of the government over its handling of the pandemic, she said it's time for the ruling dispensation to answer for its actions. She alleged that India increased its oxygen exports by "700 per cent during 2020 and did not make any efforts to import oxygen" when the demand in the June 15, 2021

country skyrocketed during the second Covid wave. "It is clear that the Modi government's lack of planning and incompetence are responsible for the shortage of oxygen that devastated lives in the second wave. Now, it's time for them to answer to the public," she said in a Facebook post. Vadra said as the second wave of Covid raged across the country, almost every state began reporting a shortage of oxygen and many people died gasping for air. "Who is responsible for the lack of oxygen in hospitals across India?" "Why were the recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee on Health ignored, she asked. "And no control exercised on the price of oxygen cylinders and their refilling."

During the first wave of the pandemic,Lakshadweep had remained a Covid-19 green zone with the first case being reported only on January 18, 2021. It has been alleged by the protesters that the changes in rules of quarantine andtravel effected by the new administrator led to rapid spread of the coronavirus disease. The islands have so far reported 7,111 cases, of which 2,320 are active. As many as 26 people havedied due to the disease. An all-party meeting on May 27 has been called by the Lakshadweep administration to discuss the issues raised by residents. Representatives of the Congress, NCP and BJP will attend the meeting, which will be held online. The Congress has written to President Ram Nath Kovind seeking his intervention in recalling Patel. People of Lakshadweep have approached United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, as well as the United Nation’s Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues, against the actions of the new administrator #SaveLakshadweep campaign has been trending on social media since May 23. Many prominent personalities and celebrities have come forward in extending their support to the campaign.

Is BJP's Tejasvi Surya profiteering with Covid vaccines?

The Congress has accused Tejasvi Surya and his uncle of profiteering with Covid-19 vaccination by "taking commission" from a private hospital in Bengaluru in exchange for asking people to vaccinate there. Referring to a "leaked audio", the Congress has alleged that Ravi Subramanya is getting a handsome share of the amount charged for vaccination by this hospital. Addressing a press conference, Congress leader Pawan Khera and Srinivas V alleged that in the "leaked audio" a person from the said hospital "can be heard telling a patient that the price of the Covid-19 vaccine cannot be less than Rs 900 since Rs 700 has to go to Ravi Subramanya". "At a time when people are desperate to get vaccinated, BJP leaders are looking for opportunities and are trying to earn money. We want to know how vaccines are available at this private hospital when they aren't available in government hospitals for common people," the Congress asked. The party has also demanded that an FIR should be registered against Tejasvi Surya and his uncle Ravi Subramanya. "This is a cash for vaccine case and membership of Tejasvi Surya and his uncle should be cancelled from the Lok Sabha and the Karnataka assembly, respectively. We demand immediate arrest of both the BJP leaders," the Congress said. P-13

RAINBOWS By Hannah Singh

They say everything is fair in love and war and yet they create war because of love! As we enter the month of acceptance, equality and love, let’s not only feel the pride but spread it too! The day is marked in the beginning of June each year in the honour of the 1969 Stonewall uprising is Manhattan when protestors insisted on the establishment of places where LGBT+ people could be open about their sexual orientation without the P-14

fear of arrest, leading to the most complicated battle for the simplest thing there exists; to love and to be loved. Think of a little boy who feels the rainbow not in the clouds but in his heart when he holds hands with his boyfriend for the first time. Scared to tell the world not because he didn’t feel pride in what he was but because he knew that people saw the world in only pink and blue. He never wanted to be anyone else but himself, yet the colours that were meant to bring him joy suddenly became his greatest burden. This little boy could be your son, your

It is an effortless statement with no depth whatsoever but the meaning is evident and profound. You are who you are and that isn’t something that should ever change. Today, homosexuality and queer identities may be acceptable to more people than ever before, but within the everyday boundaries acceptance and freedom to openly express their gender choices still remain a constant scuffle. They are no more, they are no less, they are just rainbows in the world of a whole lot of black and white, so unapologetically themselves that people who say they hate them, deep down wish they had the courage to do the same; to be themselves. It is better to be hated for who you are than loved for who you are not. Free your rainbows, the world is your sky. Don’t change who you are just because the world doesn’t approve, no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it. You are singular, you are special, you’re one of a kind. I may not be able to walk in your shoes, but I’ll walk right beside you my friend. I can’t sit back and let things ‘just be.’ I’m here for you, and I’m fighting with you.” Because you’ve been through the storm and rain, now it’s time for your inner rainbow to feel all the love that this world has to offer. “I believe we can all come together, because if you take away the labels, you realize we’re far more alike than we are different.” It’s our turn, It’s our turn to take this globe in a direction where we don’t hate someone for simply being in love, It is our turn to lead! Because "The beauty of standing up for rights is others see you standing and stand up as well! Together let’s make it a world where people can experience love like the rest of us, with butterflies in their stomach, flowers and chocolate’s; falling in love with the person and not their gender. Being in love and being with the one you love is truly an entitlement, not a privilege. Together lets create a world of No more hidden rainbows! June 15, 2021

Liberation is Self-Realization Dr. Elsa Lycias Joel As Buddha purnima draws near I'm reminded of a great quote — ‘Women are the sun of the family. With the sun shining bright and beautiful in TamilNadu and DMK's long engagement with women’s welfare programmes, be it micro credit or several assistance schemes for women, women are hopeful. Beyond the good and bad of the poll promises, women-centric government schemes have undoubtedly changed lives. On 14 October 1956, at Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur, over 20 years after he declared his intent to convert to Buddhism, Dr. Ambedkar along with 365,000 of his followers decided to embrace Buddhism. He is perhaps one of the biggest champions of women empowerment to have existed in India. His roar, “I measure the progress of a community by the degree of progress which women have achieved” is still heard all over. The Hindu Code Bill challenged the basic patriarchal foundation. Women’s empowerment in the Buddhist period, even before 25 centuries, carried a contemporary significance because empowerment would bring enlightenment irrespective of gender and thus enable humanity June 15, 2021

as a whole to tread the path of righteousness, truth, peace, progress, prosperity and justice. Going by history, Buddhism is known to have flourished in Tamil Nadu in two phases, firstly in the early years of the Pallava rule 400-650 AD, and secondly in the Chola period mid 9th to the early 14th century AD with centres of Buddhism in Kanchipuram, Kaveripattinam, Uraiyur and Nagapattinam. At some point of time, Buddhism declined in Tamil Nadu after contributing a great deal to the enrichment of Tamil culture and spiritual consciousness. Teachings and practices of Buddhism assert that in the woman lies the womb of progress. Progressive societies owe a lot to this ideology that enabled women to have control over their own life. To give women full freedom to participate in a religious life in spite of being criticized by the prevailing establishment is a task and Buddhist teachings are halfway there. People still live to tell the history untold in textbooks. That is, people who resisted the imposition of Hinduism’s varna system were marginalised. Existential issues facing marginalized women are subjugation and arbitrariness masquerading as cultural practices. Lakhs of people are embracing Buddhism in various parts of India going on to prove the relevance of the faith in today's society. Almost 87% of the 8.4 million Buddhists in India are converts.

According to an IndiaSpend analysis of 2011 Census data, female literacy among Buddhists in India is higher (74.04%) than the total population average (64.63%). India being the birthplace of Buddhism, this religion is part of India’s spiritual heritage. Indian women must be proud to know that the core Buddhist doctrine and its salvific path are essentially inclusive and do not discriminate between genders as much as the major religion of India. That's why women were admitted into the monastic order. Today, centuries after Buddha advocated the right of women to be ordained, I'm not surprised to know that the status of nuns has declined. Sadly, deep sexism exists in religious institutions although the founder of the religion made sure the influence of Buddhism should be such that women must always have fair play. In a country where women are reminded in no uncertain terms that this is no ideal country for women — within or outside the home, it's not unusual to know that nuns are placed at an inferior position as compared to monks like in every other religion. That nuns should speak after the monks have spoken, sit behind the monks in rituals and ceremonies, cannot hold the highest positions in any ceremony and bow down to a monk who has just been initiated shows how inferior the women have been placed in BudP-15

dhism too. Above all, the religious assertion that a female nun can never reach Buddhahood though she can become an arhat is farcical. Modern scholars are unsure if these rules even go back to the times of Buddha at all. Many a time I wonder if a religion that went beyond times to lay the essential foundations for eradicating discrimination towards women has patterns of misogyny in the form of Eight Garudhammas or it is the cultivation of the mind (bhāvanā) that ultimately uproot the innate conditioning of all genders. There were times when nuns of Ladakh had no food to eat and a few even served their own families as domestic help. Despite the region being home to 28 nunneries, nuns never had a designated place to pray or live until 2012. Chattnyanling nunnery built by the Ladakh Nuns Association with the help of local villagers came as a much needed relief. Before the champions of women's emancipation who advocated educational facilities and opportunities for women to make them efficient and active units in the process of religious, socio-economic and political development ushered in, women were considered inferior in India. And men seemed to have influenced the compiling, editing and interpreting of the religious doctrines. That's why we see shades of misogyny in Christianity, Islam, Sikhism Jainism and Judaism and a whole lot in Hinduism. This inferiority issue is sure to have a greater impact in the Indian society for a long duration of time. Whatever be the Buddhist ethos, it's effect will be negated in varying degrees by masculine superiority, by misinterpreting at least. I wish I P-16

could ask Buddha the reasons behind his initial refusal to grant the request of his aunt and foster mother, Prajāpati Gautami and her women to become monastics three times. Blame it on societal pressure and emotional barriers. After all, interacting positively with society and it’s prevailing norms helps a religion to thrive, doesn't it! About the 85 extra rules for the nuns and eight special rules influencing the position of women in Asian societies that are slow to evolve, one must know that the teachings of the Buddha were only committed to writing long after his demise and whether the accounts had any veracity is still debatable. Leaders of Buddha’s Light International, Taiwan have publicly rejected part of the Eight Garudhammas and other rules and teachings that imply that women are inferior to men. Before and after the pandemic hit, the world has come to know Taiwan fares better with a woman at the helm of affairs. Fortunately, Buddhism has found it's way everywhere. In Sweden organized Buddhism has its roots in the 1970s and traditions flourish. Sweden has almost closed 82% of its gender gap. In highly modernized societies, deeply rooted Buddhist traditions have persisted, have been adapted to changing conditions, including only those which are necessary for an inclusive society and ignoring few writings of disciples prejudiced towards women. As the most trusted religion in New Zealand, Buddhism has in a way, directly or indirectly, contributed towards a rapid social and economic change wherein women are well treated and respected and dis-

crimination on the basis of gender is illegal. So, Buddhism is also like a seed. If it falls on good soil, then it produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Ideals of unconditional loving kindness and respect espoused by Buddhism will be relevant today if the gap between the ideal and practice is bridged with wisdom and nobility. Discriminatory practices and attitudes still exist in Buddhist spheres as doubts about the accuracy of the scriptures exist and misrepresentations are not clarified but viewed through the opaque prism of each culture as it spread across different regions. In India, monastic women are taking on key roles and with feminism gradually evolving, outdated religious prejudice and barriers are beginning to crumble. Virulent passages that present an ambiguous view of women must be ignored if not removed for Buddhism to flourish, so that more women walk the path of liberation to become arhats and to educate all about the consequences of discrimination. Around the world, an unacceptably large number of women are the victims of domestic violence, rape and even murder each year. Buddhism at its pristine and transformative core is genderless. It's high time we promote any ethico-psychological system that facilitates the innate moulding of minds that makes social reforms a reality. On this Buddha Purnima, may we all reiterate the belief in Ahimsa (non-violence) and Karuna (compassion). To this day, religious scholars and feminists are trying to figure out what it was about that time or moment when Prince Siddhartha Gautama decided to leave behind his wife, Yasodhara, and son, Rahula to pursue enlightenment. Practicing an ideology/ religion can sometimes be like maintaining, operating and flying a helicopter irrespective of it's design and manufacture. If someone decides to fly one, it's design and manufacture doesn't absolve the right minded aviator the responsibility of ensuring that safety and quality controls are given the highest priority. Just as insurance agencies must play a constructive role in support of better safety norms, religious leaders can choose what they profess or advocate for the betterment of humanity. Ultimately, it is the person who maintains/ flies the machine, irrespective of the make, must ensure that the highest professional standards are adhered to at all times. Or don't choose to fly it. May good seeds fall on fertile soil. May the dark, darker and darkest holes of religions shrink and disappear. Happy Buddha Purnima to all who practise, profess and appreciate the goodness of Buddhism. June 15, 2021

The Truth Behind PM Care Fund

June 15, 2021

In an attempt to answer questions raised on the allocation of the PM Cares Fund, the central government revealed that medical supplies were purchased from the PM Care Fund. It has been shipped to several states. The quality of the ventilators is in the limelight since their delivery. Dr Raj Bahadur, Vice-Chancellor of the Baba Farid University of Health Science revealed while talking to ANI that out of 82 ventilators supplied through PM Cares Fund, only 42 ventilators were in working condition. Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted expressing his doubt about the efficacy of more than 50,000 ventilators supplied through PM Care Funds, “There’s a lot common between PM Cares ventilator and the PM himself: - too much false PR, - don’t do their respective jobs, - nowhere in sight when needed”. Apart from political attacks, the tweet points straightaway towards the poor quality of the ventilators. It has been revealed many ventilators are lying unused.

Ventilators turned out defective

In Karnataka, due to a shortage of skilled staff including, doctors, technicians, nurses 1800 ventilators were lying unused. Out of P-18

theasianchronicle.com

3200 ventilators received through PM Cares' Fund, only 1400 ventilators have been used. As per the reports in The Times of India, 1200 ventilators were received during the second wave while 2000 ventilators were received in 2020. Apart from the shortage of trained staff, the technical defects have also been cited as one of the reasons for ventilators lying unused. After Karnataka, Maharashtra is also asked to deal with defective ventilators. The region of Marathwada took the matter seriously and the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court asked for an explanation to address the issue. Out of 150 ventilators received through PM Cares' Funds, 113 were found to be defective, which means more than 50% of the ventilators were not good. The court even asked for remedial measures to address the grievances.

Why ventilators are not used?

When pandemic welcomed itself to the nation, we had 16000 ventilators. The worsening condition produced 50,000 ventilators, that were distributed among the states. Several states including Punjab, Bihar, UP, Rajasthan had the privilege of receiving

ventilators supplied through PM Cares’ Funds. It has been noted that ventilators were lying unused and unboxed. Different reasons like lack of technicians and lack of staff have been cited. Some state governments confronted that most of the ventilators were of poor quality and thus cannot be used. The truth was exposed while scraping the information about the quality of the ventilator and the service provided by its manufacturers.

Story of Punjab

47 out of 119 ventilators were not working as per the complaint received from Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar, but it was misleading. One of the engineers from AgVu company, the manufacturer of ventilators supplied by PM Cares’ Fund, revealed in a video that tubings were missing from some ventilators and some ventilators that were in good condition were lying unused. Ventilators require trained personnel for maintenance and many hospitals used the absence of trained personnel as an excuse. In Faridkot, 62 ventilators were lying unused and hospital administration claimed that those ventilators were not working. The ventilators of different companies were delivered to the different hospitals and they too were claimed June 15, 2021

defective. 809 ventilators were delivered in Punjab through PM Cares’ Fund, out of which 532 were put to use and 277 were laying unboxed and unused.

Bombay High Court asks for Remedial Measures

The defective ventilators received in the Marathwada region were manufactured by Jyoti CNC. Among the total ventilators received in the region, out of 17 ventilators 6 were found extremely poor, installed in the Government Medical College and Hospital Aurangabad. The GMCH informed due to the defective functioning of 17 ventilators, the remaining 37 were not unboxed. Out of 150, 113 unboxed ventilators were flawed and 37 are not unboxed. The court added, they appreciate the government’s effort of supplying ventilators but providing flawed ventilators is only going to increase the health risk to the patients. The central government should realize they supplied defective ventilators and should take the charge of replacing them with good quality ventilators.

“Big scam” in Ventilators Alleged Maha Vikas Aghadi

According to the reports, Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders labelled the defectiveness of ventilators as a "big scam". The central government confronted the denial right after hearing the statement. The committee of Medical experts appointed by Government Medical College Aurangabad revealed that the ventilators supplied to the Aurangabad Government Hospital were flawed, and hence cannot be used. The NCP leader Satish Chavan stated the same problem. As per the reports, even the engineers of the manufacturing company could not fix the problems. Sachin Sawant said, “This is a big scam and all ventilators supplied by the Center should be investigated at the state level”. He added the money collected under PM care is wasted on defective ventilators. “This is unforgivable. Narendra Modi Government forced all the corporates in the country to donate to this opaque relief fund. No information was provided about the fund and how much was collected and donated? Now the public must need to know how and why such highly inept companies got these contracts of supplying ventilators. It is also inhumane to think of profiteering let alone scam at a time of such a crisis of huge magnitude,” stated Sachin Sawant. June 15, 2021

As per the reports, even the engineers of the manufacturing company could not fix the problems. Sachin Sawant said, “This is a big scam and all ventilators supplied by the Center should be investigated at the state level”. The central government issued a note expressing their denial. The note stated, "There have been some reports suggesting that 'Make in India' ventilators in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra were not functioning optimally. These reports are baseless and incorrect, not supported by full information on

the matter." The government officials stated that they are supporting the states and Union Territories in dealing with the crisis. The ventilators manufactured by Jyoti CNC was provided in the Aurangabad region. "Jyoti CNC was supplied one of the manufacturers of "Make in India" ventilators. They have supplied centrally for COVID-9 management, as per the directions of Empowered Group. The 45 ventilators were reallocated to MGM Hospital Aurangabad by the State Authorities. No formal information was provided about this to Jyoti CNC. Therefore, Jyoti CNC engineers had no part in the reinstallation of these ventilators. Therefore, the installation of these ventilators at the new location was got done by the State Authorities at their responsibility," stated in the note released by the central government. Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal said that the money collected under PM cares Funds is used in the elections by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Everyone somehow asked the same question using different words. Releasing sweet words through notes is not enough. This is high time for the central government to take charge and replace the flawed ventilators with the ones in working condition. P-19

The inoculation exercise for the 18-44 age group was called off by the AAP government on May 22 after it ran out of vaccines for this category. As against a requirement of 1.84 crore doses to vaccinate 92 lakh people in the 1844 age group in Delhi, the Centre provided 4.5 lakh doses in April and 3.67 lakh doses in May, said Sisodia. Baluni further stated that party chief Nadda has asked the party-ruled states to prepare a programme for the welfare of children who have lost their parents due to Covid, to help secure their future. June, but not before June 10," he added. Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the Centre not to indulge in petty politics and blame game, and instead buy more vaccines to supply the states with. "This is not the time for finger-pointing. The country is suffering from a pandemic. The experience of the entire world shows that vaccination is the sole solution for this. The people need vaccines... The central government has to procure the vaccines, after doing so they should give them to us and we will administer them to everyone," Kejriwal said at a press briefing.

TMC leaders get bail in Narada case The Calcutta High Court issued a stay order on the bail of the four All India Trinamool Congress leaders who were arrested in the Narada sting case. All four arrested had been moved to special cells in Presidency Jail in Kolkata. The CBI has reportedly moved a special requisition to keep the four TMC leaders in a safe place. Earlier on Monday, a special CBI court in Kolkata had granted bail to the four leaders - ruling TMC ministers Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee, TMC MLA Madan Mitra and ex-Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee. However, they were not immediately released. Shabba Hakim, daughter of West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim, took to Twitter to allege that the four accused were being held illegally and the verdict of the court was being disregarded by CBI. The four had remained in custody because the CBI had moved the high court pleading that the matter be transferred out of the special CBI court in Kolkata and shifted outside West Bengal. The leaders were arrested for allegedly "demanding and accepting illegal gratification to show favour to a private person who was posing as a representative of a fictitious company". The alleged act was captured on camera. The sting operation was conducted by Narada News in the state. Their tapes showed 12 TMC ministers, leaders and an IPS officer accepting bribes. The tapes were released before the 2016 Bengal Assembly polls. In March 2017, based on a PIL seeking an impartial investigation into the Narada tapes, the Calcutta High Court ordered a preliminary probe to be conducted by the CBI in the case. The arrests on Monday sparked massive protests outside CBI's office. As TMC supporters shouted slogans and pelted stones outside, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee went inside the CBI office and demanded to be arrested along with her leaders.

agitating farmers. Tikait said farmers are ready for another round of talks with the government but are firm on their demands for a law on minimum support price (MSP). “They don’t want to agree on that because that will affect the businesses who are aspiring to buy our produce at really low costs,” he alleged. “BJP leaders in states have no answer to our questions. Today in Gujarat a lot of mango farming is done by businessmen sitting in Mumbai. Do we want that in the whole country?” He said bills passed by some states ruled by opposition parties to counter the central laws are not of much benefit to the farmers.

Media reports have emerged showing violation of Covid-19 social distancing norms at protest sites on Delhi borders, but Tikait said the farmers have been taking care to see to follow norms. “Cases of Covid-19 are rising because the government has not built the necessary hospitals, or arranged the requisite medicines,” he said. “We are doing this for our future generations. There will be a time when roti will become like jewellery if the laws are implemented. We are dying two deaths here – one by Covid and another by these laws. If the government is really concerned about our condition, they should take back these laws and we will go back home.” Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella organisation of protesting farmers’ unions, had appealed citizens to put up black flags on their houses and vehicles to mark the occasion. Several opposition parties including Congress, Shiv Sena, NCP and Left have extended support to the protest nationwide on May 26, marking 6 months since the commencement of the farm stir.

Farmers have been protesting against the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. As a generation of people, we have had it better than any other generation ever in the history of humanity in terms of comforts, conveniences and technological advances. But we are also whining like no other generation ever. Today, wide changes have occurred in life of all people. Malnutrition, unhealthy diet, smoking, alcohol consuming, drug abuse, stress and so on, are the presentations of unhealthy lifestyle that they are used as dominant form of lifestyle. Besides, the lives of citizens face with new challenges. For instance, emerging new technologies within IT such as the internet and virtual communication networks, lead our world to a major challenge that threatens the physical and mental health of individuals. The challenge is the overuse and misuse of the technology. Therefore, according to the existing studies, it can be said that: lifestyle has a significant influence on physical and mental health of human being. There are different forms of such influences. Consanguinity in some ethnicity is a dominant form of life style that it leads to the genetic disorders. Reformation of this unhealthy life style is a preventing factor for decreasing the rate of genetic diseases. In some countries, the overuse of drugs is a major unhealthy life style. ication to other intervention. Pain relievers, eye drops and antibiotics have the most usage. While self-medications such as antibiotics have a negative effect on the immune system, if the individual would be affected by infection, antibiotics will not be effective in treatment. Sometimes drug allergy is so severe that it can cause death.

Finally, variables of lifestyle that influence on health can be categorized in some items:

Diet and Body Mass Index (BMI): Diet is the greatest factor in lifestyle and has a direct and positive relation with health. Poor diet and its consequences like obesity is the common healthy problem in urban societies. Unhealthy lifestyle can be measured by BMI. Urban lifestyle leads to the nutrition problems like using fast foods and poor foods, increasing problems like cardiovascular.

Exercise: For treating general health problems, the exercise is included in life style. The continuous exercise along with a healthy diet increases the health. Some studies stress on the relation of active life style with happiness.

Sleep: One of the bases of healthy life is the sleep. Sleep disorders have several social, psychological, economical and healthy conse-

Modern technologies: Advanced technology facilitates the life of human beings. Misuse of technology may result in unpleasant consequences. For example, using of computer and other devices up to midnight, may effect on the pattern of sleep and it may disturb sleep. Schedule time when you turn off the TV and computer. Once a week, turn off all screens and do something a little more physical with your family. Play games, take a walk, do almost anything that will be more active than sitting on the couch.

Recreation: Leisure pass time is a sub factor of life style. Neglecting leisure can bring negative consequences. With disorganized planning and unhealthy leisure, people endanger their health.Look for small ways to walk more. Get housework done and increase daily movement at the same time. Go away to a garden for a walk with your dog or simply dance like no one is watching and free your soul. This is a great way to stay moving while doing something you enjoy. The great thing about moving is that just a few minutes a day can have other lasting benefits, many of which you may not even be aware of. Just some of the benefits include: m Enhances self-esteem m Helps maintain flexibility as you age m Improves joint stability m Improves memory in elderly people m Improves mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression m Increases and improves range of motion m Reduces stress m Reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes Creating a healthy lifestyle doesn't have to mean drastic changes. You may adapt to change better when it doesn't require you to overhaul your entire life. Just pick one thing and work on that one thing every day, letting the rest of your life and habits stay the same. Life is too short to remain same forever without experiencing any changes within yourself. You may be surprised that those small changes really can make a difference. P-23

book review A Chequered Sea Of Emotions thoughts that you can connect to

"In my morning walk, I look for the footprint of people who had walked before I did"- one of the lines from A Chequered sea of Emotions hints toward the unaltered emotions that dwell with us but we don't allow words to express them. Taciturnity holds us. Author Kavita Ravindranath tries to convey the experiences and struggles that life proffers in front of every individual. Kavita Ravindranath was born in the beautiful steel city, Jamshedpur in 1981. She is a teacher by profession and a writer by heart. It is exciting to glimpse into the poet’s perspicacity and observe the world through her eyes. The book talks about four ingredients of human existence influence, self-love, desire, and sarcasm. When you are reading slowly and embracing the words and their meaning carefully, each verse seems to talk about your life as if the author knows your sufferings and secrets. Each section of phrases holds your hand, consoles you obscurely and enlightens your path. Where the book oscillates between philosophical and emotional aspect, it manages to impress readers in no time. The book includes a lot of 'letter to self' poems. It does have a couple of one-liners and a diary but all the poems in this collection are connected. What makes this book stand out from other poetry books is that in this book, the poet uses her life journey to motivate others, which is quite usual with poetry books however, she still talks general and succeeds in connecting with readers. "As long as we live, uncertainties keep us company. When it’s time to leave, only death is certain" - lines like these are at their best with a wide range of emotions and imagery. If you enjoy poetry with a variance of emotions and philosophy, A chequered sea of emotions is all of that and so much more, you might enjoy it as much as I did. A must-read book, indeed! P-24

Poetry is justice to the world of cruelty and togetherness in diversity. I had read this somewhere that a thriving poetry anthology needs two essential components: Love and Nature. The author has succeeded splendidly in putting together both of the emotions. Of the heart and soul is an indifferent set of striking verses that you can easily get lost in. Loved the way 'Piyali Mitra' being a researcher in philosophy and bioethics, weaves poetry into a musical arrangement and makes readers go deep into words and sing along. How true does it sound that the influence of poetry lies either in its music or deep sense? When the book talks about love, it includes grief, loss, passion, and separation whereas, nature hints toward features, forces, vision, and processes. This book is a contribution to the imagination, a guide to emotions, a supplement to readers, and

a gift to standard creativity. When you are falling in love with words, you are also getting to know the writer. Poetries have always revolved around love and nature but "of the heart and soul" indicates how these two are correlated moreover fixed together without any proper evidence in the literature. The book contains countless metaphors, a certain rhythm, and repetitions that resonate pace of sentiments and illustrations in the book gives more visual and abstract value to words. With each segment, emotion, and stanza, the book is engaging and winning. You get forced to fall into a warm abyss, meet desire at every point evading perplexity. So, overall it gives quality verses with a string of emotions. This is an all-embracing anthology for readers of any age and a fun compilation to read. If you are interested in reading poetry books then it's always worth checking out anthologies like 'OF THE HEART AND SOUL - a mellifluous whisper'. June 15, 2021

Librarians can help you sort the real news from the fake

While a plethora of useful, accurate, and engaging content is available online, the web is filled with inaccurate and misleading information. “Click bait” headlines get you to click on the content even if the underlying information is superficial or inaccurate. Misinformation is the spread of deliberate falsehoods or inflammatory content online, such as the Russian-backed ads placed on social media during the 2016 US presidential election. Librarianship has always been about providing objective, accurate, and engaging information that meets the needs of a particular person. This has not changed, and it is why librarians are experts in information literacy.

THE LIBRARY OF THE FUTURE

Nikita Bararia

Libraries have always been at the heart of the communities they serve. They are accessible and safe spaces, providing access to huge resources of information and knowledge. There are an estimated 315,000 public libraries in the world, 73 per cent of them in developing and transitioning countries. But today, at a time when information is at the disposal of the users around the clock through digital modes - are libraries still relevant and should resource be spending on libraries. But today, public libraries are at a turning point. The way we access and consume information has changed dramatically in the 21st century, and this presents major challenges and opportunities for public library systems across the world. The advent of new technologies has changed some of our reading habits. But our need for shared, community-centred spaces to find information and connect with others is unlikely to change any time soon. To survive in the digital age and stay relevant, public libraries need to be brave and innovative. They must embrace both the physical and virtual. June 15, 2021

Last year, the Arts Council England published a wide-ranging and detailed piece of research, Envisioning the library of the future, aiming to answer these very questions. As well as emphasising the need for the physical and the digital to sit side by side, it finds that the 21st century public library service will be one in which “local people are more active and involved in its design and delivery.” A sense of community, always a defining feature of libraries, has renewed necessary.

Libraries are safer spaces

The internet brings people together, often in enjoyable and productive ways, such as over shared interests (pop culture blogs, fanfic sites) or common challenges (online support groups). But cyberbullying and trolling can leave people reluctant to engage with folks they disagree with or to share their ideas in the first place. Libraries are places where people can gather constructively and all are welcome.

Libraries respect history

Web pages are ephemeral, and link rot is a real problem. The content of library collections is much more stable. Printed materials are generally published on acid-free paper,

Librarians guide you to exactly what you need

Google is an impressive search engine, but its results can be overwhelming, and many people do not know to filter them by content type (such as .pdf) or website source (such as .gov). Google offers many search tips, which are useful but generic. A conversation with a librarian can clarify exactly what you are looking for and figure out the best way to use Google—or many other resources—to find it.

Librarians do not track your reading or search history to sell you things

Amazon’s book purchase recommendation feature is useful for learning about new books. But this usefulness comes at the expense of your privacy because your reading data is valuable business intelligence for Amazon. The same is true for your web searching history, which is why you often see ads for a product for weeks after searching for it just once. Librarians value and protect your privacy.

CONCLUSION: Libraries continue to provide benefits that are both tangible—such as community spaces and human interaction— and harder to quantify—access, privacy, intellectual freedom. The internet is an indispensable and irreplaceable tool for modern living. But it is not a library and will not replace the work of librarians. Libraries always provided a safer and smoothing place to their readers.

The Library is an arena of possibility, opening both a window into the soul and a door onto the world. P-27
