Welcome to Theatre Calgary’s 49th season. In a few months, Canada begins its sesquicentennial celebration. With that in mind, we begin our season with a landmark Canadian creation: Trey Anthony starring in her play ’da Kink in my Hair. Trey dared to write this honest reflection of her particular world view and put it on the stage in all its glory. It is a thrill for us to present this play in Western Canada for the very first time, and following the run here, we are pleased that this production of ’da Kink in my Hair will be performed at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. ’da Kink marks my final production here at Theatre Calgary as Artistic Director. After eleven wonderful years of leading this fine institution, I will be moving on to become Artistic Director of the Grand Theatre in my hometown of London, Ontario. Over this time together we have experienced many things. We have discovered that we have an appetite for new plays (I think of Liberation Days). We have crafted bold international collaborations (working with American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco on Major Barbara). We have been charged up by hot, contemporary topics (Bad Jews). We’ve hummed along with classic musicals (Mary Poppins) and been dazzled by new ones (the world premiere of The Little Prince). And we’ve seen the evolution of Shakespeare by the Bow as an acknowledgement of our commitment to the emerging artists of Alberta. Through all the years and over 70 productions, I’ve been fuelled by passionate, engaged, and incredibly supportive audiences. Because of you, our brilliant team at Theatre Calgary has been able to create such original and varied theatre. My humble thanks for your generosity over these years. It’s been an honour to serve as Artistic Director and I will miss this place considerably. At the same time, I am incredibly excited by all the plans the theatre has for the future and I look forward to cheering you all on as Theatre Calgary heads towards its 50th season. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTES A famous philosopher once said, “the only thing that is constant is change.” This time last year, I sat down to write a message to Theatre Calgary audiences for the very first time. After almost two decades of the venerable Tom McCabe leading this company, I was stepping into big shoes and was looking out at a year of getting to know our patrons and our supporters, in addition to familiarizing myself with this city and this company. I am happy to say that it was a very good year. Now, twelve months later, we thank my Theatre Calgary partner and Artistic Director, Dennis Garnhum, for his exemplary years of artistic leadership and direction. Dennis will be moving on, and we will soon welcome someone new to the Theatre Calgary family to carry on his inspiring work of bringing world class productions – expecting the unexpected – to Calgarians and beyond. I suppose that one could argue that it’s our audiences who are not changing; that they are the ones who remain loyal, dedicated and passionate about seeing stories brought to life on our stage. While I know that many of you ARE a part of this constant and sustained force, I do hope that you too will grow and diversify and change. Art and theatre are a reflection of our society; we must be cognizant of our need to reach more individuals, to share our work with those who may never have experienced it before and who might not have felt welcomed in our spaces. This is our future. So to all of you who have stood by us in these years of change and growth – thank you. You will be rewarded with the promise of more spectacle, more stories and more moments that touch your heart. And to those who will join us this year for the very first time, welcome. Thank you for being a part of our evolution as a theatre company and being a part of our new future. You are, like change, so very necessary. Here’s to a fabulous 2016-2017 season where we celebrate – all together. COLLEEN A. SMITH Executive Director

A SPECIAL RESERVED SEAT Playwright and actor Trey Anthony’s grandmother has a special place in the heart and history of ‘da Kink in my Hair. As the play grew from a small stage at the Toronto Fringe Festival, to the Mirvish production at the Princess of Wales Theatre, her grandmother would sit beaming in the front row as the play’s biggest fan. Her enthusiasm and love for the play would often result in her calling out the proper lines whenever an actor would veer from the script! Trey’s grandmother, Maude Enid Fraser, passed away two years ago. In honour of her unwavering love and support, Theatre Calgary’s Artistic Champions Craig and Cara Senyk have graciously purchased the seat she would have sat in, in the front row. In her memory, it will remain empty for the entire four-week run.

When I heard about the generous donation of this seat by Craig and Cara Senyk, it brought me to tears. I had a very close, loving and yet very complicated relationship with my grandmother. She was my biggest supporter, yet also my harshest critic... Her love of the arts and her belief in me, greatly shaped me. Since her passing, whenever I do the show I look for her, and seek her energy in the crowd. I desperately seek her approval. I miss her laughter. Miss her face beaming in the front row. She may not physically be here, but I have no doubt that her spirit is here...I feel her. Gran, I hope I make you proud! – Trey Anthony

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR In 2004, while in Toronto directing the Dora Mavor Award-winning musical Cookin’ at the Cookery, I first saw Trey Anthony’s ’da Kink in my Hair. I fell so in love with the show, I phoned the artistic director at San Diego Repertory Theater at intermission and said, “Sam, you have to bring this show to America.” Sam said, “See Act II first my friend.” I did, and it did not disappoint. So, it opened in San Diego as a “play, with music.” It would later become a television series, and has had a wonderful life. A few months ago, I was excited to get a call from Ms. Anthony to direct this Theatre Calgary / National Arts Centre co-production, but was over the moon to discover it was now evolving into a new musical. Music and musicals are my artistic love, and my life. YES was the only answer there could be! Having directed in five other Canadian cities, Theatre Calgary has been a target for a decade or two. Working here now, I must say it is all that I dreamed it could be. What a beautiful experience. I want to thank Trey for the call, and Dennis and Lesley for allowing me to work on this creation at such a wonderful theatre with such fantastic people. It will also be my second production at the amazing National Arts Centre. I have so enjoyed the kindness and support of the staff and designers in Calgary, and in Canada over the years, and I can’t wait to return. Although someone will still have to prove to me that it doesn’t rain every day in Calgary. My goal as an artist is to always enlighten as well as to entertain. Trey, and the various composers have given soil to plant this “…Kink.” I hope and pray that you will take the journey with us. For you to see, feel, hear, or experience yourself or someone you know in this production will be my goal. From the particular, to the universal – that’s theatre! Loving my work and my life! It’s a good week to be me… Growing and grateful, MARION J. CAFFEY Director Theatre Calgary is a professional non-profit theatre company that performs in the Max Bell Theatre at Arts Commons. Scared and loving it. We didn’t invite your best friend over for a movie night. Or beg her to watch something scary. But we did power the movie that helped you realize you can get through the scary parts with a friend by your side. When the energy you invest in life meets the wind power we fuel it with, screams and giggles happen.

TRANSFORMATION & TRUTH-TELLING An interview with playwright and performer Trey Anthony By Zachary Moull Trey Anthony is a truly multitalented artist, not only writing ’da Kink in my Hair but also taking the stage as Novelette, the hairdresser at the heart of a play that has brought laughter, tears, and healing to its passionate audiences ever since its 2001 premiere at the Toronto Fringe Festival. We spoke with her during rehearsals at Theatre Calgary. What was your first spark of inspiration that led to writing ’da Kink in my Hair? I was an actor in Toronto, and I was really tired of going out for auditions that I felt didn’t represent me. There were a lot of stereotypical roles: Baby Momma #1, Welfare Mom #2. I got really frustrated with those roles, and I remember going home and talking to my grandmother about it. She said, “Well if that’s the crap that they’re writing, then why can’t you write better crap?” Then the heartbeat of the play came when I was coming out to my family as queer. I turned to writing because it was very therapeutic for me, and the play is really rooted in that.

Trey Anthony

I grew up in a hair salon. My aunt was a hairdresser. So I know what happens in a hair salon very intimately. I think most women can relate to this: you have a very intimate relationship with your hairdresser. So the hair salon becomes a place where women gather and talk about what’s going on in their lives. Especially for Black women, since we spend a lot of time there. I know that when I tell my friends who are not Black that I’m in my hair salon between three to four hours – that’s a quick day! – they’re shocked by that. They’re like, “What are you

“The hair salon becomes a place where women gather and talk about what’s going on in their lives.”

’da Kink in my Hair takes place within a community of women at a hair salon. How does that strong sense of friendship and solidarity form in a salon?

doing there?” But you go for the whole experience. It’s not just about getting your hair done. It really is a place where we gather as a community. You play Novelette, the hairdresser who presides over the salon. How does she build that community? Novelette has this amazing gift where she touches a woman’s hair and causes what I call the “unmasking.” All of us have a public persona and a private persona. Novelette is able to unmask these women and reveal what is going on in their private lives. It’s a truth-telling.

“For a lot of women, regardless of race, we walk around with this private pain.” What makes it so powerful, so necessary, to speak those truths? For me, I think it was necessary with ’da Kink to see Black women’s stories portrayed authentically onstage because, for a lot of women, regardless of race, we walk around with this private pain. There’s that inner voice saying “we are never good enough.” And I think this play gives women a sense of healing. After the show, I’ve had women say things like “It made me proud to be a woman,” or “It made me feel less alone,” or “It made me see that other women are going through these struggles.”

TREY ANTHONY’S ’DA KINK HIGHLIGHTS Toronto Fringe Festival, 2001: “It was a huge triumph for me when we broke box office records there, because I know that people were questioning whether audiences would come out to see a play that featured eight Black women. The play really spoke to people, and it crossed race, it crossed genders, it crossed class.” Mirvish Productions, 2005: “We were the first Canadian play ever to be produced at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. It was only supposed to run for three weeks, and we ended up running for five and a half months with sold-out audiences.” San Diego Repertory Theatre, 2005: “This was our first time going out to the U.S., and the play won four NAACP Awards there. That was a huge milestone.”

Speaking of public and private personas, what role does hairstyle play in the way we create or present our identities? When we’re going through any kind of transition, be it a break-up or a new job, a lot of us go to our hair salon to change our look and feel better about ourselves. I know for me, when I’m feeling down, the first thing I do is go to the hair salon and say “give me some colour,” because that’s a representation of how I want to feel brighter in my life. Or sometimes I’ll want to cut my hair to represent that I’m letting go of something in my life. I think our hair is a very symbolic representation of ourselves. So it’s really important that when Novelette finishes her work on someone’s hair, she’s created an inner and outer transformation.

“I think our hair is a very symbolic representation of ourselves.” The play delves into some very important issues: racism, homophobia, violence, sexual abuse. What drew you to those stories? When I was writing the play, I felt that every single one of the characters had pieces of me and my life in there. Homophobia is something that, as a queer woman, I’ve experienced within my family. With sexual violence against young girls, that’s something that we don’t talk about publicly, and that had occurred within my own childhood. With the character whose son has died, I have

a Black father and a Black brother, and I know it’s a reality that every single time they walk out the door, there’s something that goes through my mind: “Are they coming back?” These were things that I really needed to talk about. And I knew that there was a community of people who were longing to hear it. I’m sure you’ve done countless interviews over the years about ’da Kink. Is there a question you wish you got asked, that you haven’t been asked yet? That’s a good question! I think it would be, “how have I myself changed from when I wrote the play to now?” When I wrote the play fifteen years ago, I was going through my twenty-something angst and questioning a lot of things. At that point, I related most strongly to the women who visit the salon. Now I’m older and more mature, and I see myself in Novelette. I’ve become the woman that I wanted to be – that’s who Novelette always was. The way she just says, “I do whatever makes me happy.” So I feel like Novelette is where I’m at in my life now, and I’m grateful. It was a journey to get here, and I recognize that it’s not a final destination. You’re always trying to work through something. But at the same time, you need to be at peace with where you are. This interview has been edited and condensed. To read more about Trey Anthony’s journey with ’da Kink in my Hair, visit our online Play Guide!

HERE’S YOUR CUE Randy Ferguson of Strategic Group How our world has changed in this past year. We are navigating our way through a gut-wrenching economic condition that not only has affected the energy sector in Alberta and Canada, but also many other business sectors. And of course, we Calgarians are at the epicentre. Like many others in the current economic condition, our firm is utilizing our creative and unconventional thinking to reframe, rethink, and reshape our company value proposition, and our place in the value chain.

“Art pushes the boundaries. It starts conversation and creates dialogue. Let’s start a conversation today.” Many in the arts community have experienced a drop in financial support. Yet, no one knows how to reframe, rethink and reshape better than our Calgary arts organizations. The stereotype phrase of the ‘starving artist’ brings to mind someone who is passionate and determined to succeed no matter how difficult the journey. One great example of a creative and unconventional approach is Theatre Calgary’s emerging artist program

Randy Ferguson, Chief Operating Officer, Strategic Group

Shakespeare by the Bow held in Prince’s Island Park. The park is the stage - and the grass, trees and landscape provide the set and the seating. But what it really does is start conversations and interest that convert into sales and a stronger arts and culture scene. Yet another measure of international reach is Nicholas Lloyd Webber, son of the great Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, who partnered with Theatre Calgary for the World Premiere of The Little Prince – The Musical here in Calgary. These examples are important to hear because they are great reminders to corporate Calgary that to be creative and unconventional in tougher economic times can mean success and that economically successful businesses are a part, but not all, of what makes a great city. I think we can all agree that our Calgary artists and arts community have earned their stripes. Notwithstanding economic

ups and downs, our arts community learned how to achieve international stature on a shoestring. No one knows how to reframe and reshape to be current and thus find success, better than the creative people that have put Calgary on the international stage. So let’s refresh as corporate Calgary and re-commit to our partnership with the Calgary arts community. Let’s build on the work already achieved by the dynamic partnerships of business and art. Last year, I stood here and asked our artists to not be discouraged, now I’m asking my business colleagues to withstand the conventional thinking of cutting costs by cutting arts funding. Instead, let’s be creative and unconventional, find new ways to make our very necessary contribution to what makes a great city, and help create the pride, legacy and impact that results from such forward thinking. And to those industries enjoying an economic updraft due to a low dollar, attractive manufacturing environment, great tourism take-up, I ask that you step up and help further develop what is already an internationally recognized arts community. Art pushes the boundaries. It starts conversation and creates dialogue. Let’s start a conversation today. Together, let’s continue to build on the foundation that makes Calgary great - entrepreneurial thinking that knows no boundaries. Theatre Calgary greatly appreciates the ongoing support from the Strategic Group. The words above are an excerpt from Randy’s speech made at the Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions earlier this year.

Who has seen the room? The W.O. Mitchell Room has a new look thanks to our friends at Strategic Group. The renovation features enhanced seating, lighting, and décor, as well as premium wines and wine dispensary. In the spirit of creativity and ingenuity, photos in the lounge highlight past Theatre Calgary world premieres and pay tribute to some of the great artists who have performed here. The W.O. Mitchell Room honours the esteemed Canadian author, who always claimed that his first love was the theatre. Theatre Calgary was fortunate to have a connection to Mr. Mitchell in our early days, premiering five of his plays, and having him as host for several benefits. The lounge is available for the exclusive use of Theatre Calgary members who have generously invested in the work on our stage: Artistic Champions, Dress Circle Members, and special guests. Philanthropic support from these individuals and companies provides a valuable and greatly-needed financial resource for Theatre Calgary. Take a peek inside to see how the room has changed to be more patron friendly. New members are always welcome! Please visit theatrecalgary. com for more information or pick up a brochure in the lobby. Our sincere thanks to Strategic Group for making this renovation possible and to all our members who support us throughout the year.

Creating value where we live and work. Together. Applauding Theatre Calgary.
