For twenty-six seasons Theatre Calgary has presented Charles Dickens’ classic holiday story A Christmas Carol. Over 600,000 people have attended the production throughout the years and an impressive 450 people have been involved as actors, technicians, designers, directors and other artists. Every year, as patrons pour out of our theatre at the end of a performance, we are reminded of the power of Dickens’ words to inspire and delight. There are audience members that return year after year, and bring their ever-expanding families. Our tradition has become their tradition. For many people, attending A Christmas Carol at Theatre Calgary signals the beginning of their holiday celebrations.

Metamorphosis is a production coming to us direct from Iceland. We’re excited to be hosting these European guests as they share with us one of their most exciting productions seen world-wide, and now coming to Calgary for a quick stop en route to New York City. A thrilling experience not to be missed!

There have been various theatrical versions of the story presented over the years. I’ve set this production in a winter wonderland. It’s a reflection of Scrooge’s cold heart and, I thought, a fitting nod to a chilly Calgary winter. Rather than finishing our story with the snow melting and the ice receding, we celebrate winter with a delightful skating party on a frozen river. Our story centres on one man’s confrontation with his own selfish and destructive existence. By looking back on the life he has led, and more frightening, to the life he is destined to lead, this man finds his way to a triumphant redemption. And because of this there is light and hope. For this reason we have filled our production with music and laughter. New this season, we’ve published the entire production script, complete with photographs celebrating the artists and talents who have made this production so elegant. Copies are available in the lobby—we hope you will take one home with you as we continue our grand tradition of A Christmas Carol at Theatre Calgary. Happy Holidays.

in the wings

Written by Zach Moull, Assistant Dramaturg

The Gift of a “Little Christmas Book” Charles Dickens was one of the first literary stars to stake out a role as a public intellectual, seeking to shape Britain’s national conversation on social issues through his writings and speeches. “I have a great faith in the poor,” he once wrote. “I always endeavour to present them in a favourable light to the rich.” Born in 1812, Dickens grew up in poverty himself. As a child, he worked long hours in a London boot-blacking factory starting at the age of twelve, when his father was sent to debtor’s prison. He rose to prominence as an author in the late 1830s, with his early novels often exploring Britain’s treatment of its struggling underclass. Oliver Twist (1838), for example, condemns the brutality of the Poor Law and its workhouses, where the destitute were forced into prison-like conditions, and paints a sympathetic picture of the poor and their children. The autumn of 1843 was not a time of great cheer for Dickens. Already demoralized by a visit to one of London’s poorest schools, he travelled to Manchester in October to speak at a fundraiser for the Athenaeum, an institution that provided education and recreation for the city’s enormous working class. The Athenaeum was in financial trouble after the economic recession of 1840–42, which had hit Manchester, a sprawling young city driven by the new factories of the Industrial Revolution, particularly hard. In the early 1840s, more than half of the children born in Manchester died before the age of five and thousands of unemployed workers relied on the charity of soup kitchens every day. There was little room for Christmas in the industrial city, where factories ran round-the-clock on Christmas Day. But while walking the streets after his rousing speech, buoyed perhaps by the “bright eyes and beaming faces” of the working poor who had applauded his words, Dickens hit upon the idea for A Christmas Carol.

and gold cover, and set the price at a relatively affordable five shillings (a novel would sell for around 30 shillings at the time). Dickens’ hard work meant that A Christmas Carol was ready just in time for Christmas. Six thousand copies were published on December 19, 1843—and every single one had been sold by Christmas Day. Newspaper reviews praised the book’s Yuletide message of generosity and goodwill, as well as the power and economy of the tale. “Who can listen to objections regarding such a book as this?” wrote William Makepeace Thackeray, a fellow novelist and one of Dickens’ foremost rivals. “It seems to me a national benefit, and to every man and woman who reads it, a personal kindness.” Indeed, the nation’s response to the book was almost universally warm, with Dickens receiving scores of letters from readers who wanted to thank him for brightening their holiday season. One letter, from a prominent Scottish judge, told Dickens that he had “fostered more kindly feelings and prompted more positive acts of beneficence” with his one small book than had all the sermons and publications of the previous year’s Christmas combined. As for Dickens himself, he was so cheered that at a Christmas party soon after Carol’s publication, he spent a full hour performing magic tricks for children—he reportedly made plum pudding appear from a top hat—and then danced late into the night. Sources Michael Patrick Hearn, ed, The Annotated Christmas Carol, W. W. Norton, 1976. Les Standiford, The Man Who Invented Christmas, Crown, 2008. Claire Tomalin, Charles Dickens: A Life, Viking, 2011.

On his return to London, Dickens threw himself headlong into the new project. He was so eager to finish the book in time for Christmas that he postponed meetings for several weeks, sending his regrets to his lawyer, for example, by explaining that he was “in the middle of a roaring Christmas scene.” Working from morning to evening, Dickens kept up his habit of walking the streets at night for inspiration. In a letter to a friend in Boston, he wrote that while he “walked about the black streets of London, fifteen and twenty miles many a night when all the sober folks had gone to bed,” he had “wept and laughed and wept again, and excited himself in a most extraordinary manner in the composition” of what he affectionately called “my little Christmas book.” When his publisher expressed doubts about the story, Dickens put his own finances on the line by proceeding with A Christmas Carol on a commission basis. Fortunately, this allowed him to control the design of the book itself. He commissioned an artist to make to make illustrations and woodcuts, chose a festive red The cast of A Christmas Carol (2011). Carol All the Year “I have always thought of Christmas time as a good time, a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely.” – Scrooge’s nephew Fred in A Christmas Carol After his visits from the Spirits of Christmas, Ebenezer Scrooge pledges to “honour Christmas in his heart and try to keep it all the year.” This is no small task! We asked the artists of A Christmas Carol and Theatre Calgary staff members to share how they try to keep Christmas year-round: I try to remember the remarkable joy of performing before our audiences, and the happiness felt by so many in the theatre. – Stephen Hair (Scrooge) I sing everywhere. Walking down the street, in public washrooms, in the grocery store. Music makes people smile in spite of themselves. – Allison Lynch (Spirit of Christmas Past) I sincerely believe that by offering a helping hand, a gesture of courtesy, or even just a smile on a daily basis, that I can make a difference in someone’s day. And hopefully, they will make a difference to someone else’s in turn. – Shari Wattling (Artistic Associate and Production Dramaturg for A Christmas Carol)

I make a donation to feed the homeless every time I buy groceries. – Doug McKeag (Mr. Fezziwig) I try to be kind and thoughtful towards others. – Roberta Mauer Phillips (Mrs. Fezziwig) I smile. When I’m having a bad day, I smile and eventually I can forget about it. And when you smile at someone, they smile too. It's a drop that makes ripples out into the world. – Ron Siegmund (Wardrobe Master and Resident Hair & Wig Stylist) I make sandwiches for the people at Mustard Seed. –Keelan McAuley (Peter Cratchit) I say yes to charity donations when I’m buying something in a store: the food bank campaign at Sobeys, the book fund for kids at Indigo, the school supply drive at Staples. None of these things costs me more than a fancy coffee, but as we learn from Mr. Fezziwig, even a little bit can make a big difference to someone. – Susan McNair Reid (Company Manager) I love to host a potluck! It warms my heart to gather friends together, share a good meal, and discuss ways of becoming better human beings. – Rebecca Northan (Mrs. Dilber) I believe that we have the power to make a difference in the world around us through simple acts of positive thoughtfulness—it’s a gift that gives back every day. – Nancy Cameron (Director of Marketing) When I see someone in need of assistance, I don’t look the other way or walk on by. – Shirley Yurchi-Weber (Manager of Individual and Planned Giving) Family, love, and joy are the three things that warm my heart at Christmas. I try to be kind to my neighbours during the rest of the year when I’m not with my family, and I try to love, to be loved, and to spread joy to the world around me. – Lauren Steyn (Sales and Customer Service Associate) My dog Fozzie is a Samoyed, and they say that Samoyeds look like they have Christmas on their faces all year round. So I look at him and think of Christmas! He reminds me to find joy every day. – Erin Breen (Belle) I try to be thoughtful and kind to people all the time. – Aurora Hunt (Fan) I try to avoid being haunted by spirits. – Dennis Garnhum (Artistic Director and Director of A Christmas Carol)

Here’s Your Cue

Barb and Yukio Kitagawa, Individual Donors. Photo by Jeff Yee, Raindrop Images.

Q

Q: How long have you been a part of Theatre Calgary and in what capacity did you start? A: In 1969, we were given Theatre

Calgary tickets from a friend. We would then buy tickets here and there and eventually became subscribers. In 1993, when Theatre Calgary did Evita, we got really involved; Yukio wanted to see the show multiple times, and we thought that the best way was to become volunteer ushers.

A: We know that coming to Theatre Calgary is a real social event for the seniors and we want to make sure that they have a good time before the show. We’re really focused on the complete experience and feel it’s important to make the seniors feel welcome. Q: Why do you think volunteering your

time and giving your financial support is so important to the theatre?

A: We know it helps Theatre Calgary produce the exciting theatre we’ve come to expect and enjoy. Q: You ran a donation matching program

last year at the Seniors’ Saturday Matinee. You told the seniors that you would match their donations - what was your motivation for the program and were you pleased with the response?

A: We want to make sure that the Seniors’

Program continues to be successful at Theatre Calgary. We thought we could set an example and challenge the seniors to support a program they enjoy. We found the program to be successful and would like to thank all those who participated!

Q: Who would you encourage to become a Theatre Calgary donor?

In the summer of 1996, when Theatre Calgary was in a negative financial situation, we strengthened our volunteering efforts. Our goal was to raise awareness for the theatre.

A: Those who treasure quality, affordable live theatre!

Q: What does Theatre Calgary mean to you?

A: Theatre Calgary means much to us,

because it brings balance to our lifestyle. Live theatre is magical and galvanizing!

Q: How did you get started with the Seniors’ Saturday Matinee?

All donations are greatly appreciated. *Charitable tax receipt less value of benefits (tax receipt issued on donations over $25)

Q: Is there anything else you want to share about donating?

A: In our early life experiences, a few good people reached out a hand to us. From that experience, we developed a philosophy of life - “Being Useful to Others.” The notion of wanting to be of use, inspired us to donate our time and make financial contributions to various organizations, one being Theatre Calgary. Finally, this year, we will not only purchase the food and supplies for the Seniors’ Saturday Matinee, but we’d like to take part in the Adopt-a-Play program, by adopting two shows - A Christmas Carol and Anne of Green Gables.

A: In the 1999/2000 season, the Artistic Director at the time, Ian Prinsloo, asked us to be part of the Seniors’ Saturday Matinee. When we came for the first time, there was tea and Oreo cookies for the seniors and Ian Prinsloo spoke, giving details about the show. It was at that time that the RBC Foundation was coming on board. We knew it was something we wanted to be a part of; we really liked the concept of making theatre

Q: Why do you think live theatre is important? A: Live theatre offers a total entertainment
