ON THE B-SIDE From The Publisher

It’s About Community While sitting in a boat on the Banana River, I was trying to think about what to write in my Publisher’s Note. Then, I decided. It had to be about community. We live in a special place. People want to visit here, they want to move here. We have great restaurants and bars, we have some of the most beautiful views. Our wildlife is amazing. The more I think about it, the more I realize... I am bananas about where we live. This realization hit me even harder after an occurrence that happened in our community this past month. Recently, a child went missing in my neighborhood. Kids go missing all the time, but that morning before the news broke this community didn’t realize what the day had in store for them. Everyone set aside their daily routines. They got on their bikes, in their cars, they took their boats or they got on the horn to find this missing child. Members from all walks of life came together. Policemen, surfers, paramedics, business persons, rocket scientists, and families all set their differences aside and came together. It was amazing to behold. This is our core of the community, it is our nucleus and I am extremely grateful for being apart of the Beachside. Our local businesses are built around this nucleus. We tell their stories and help bring people together. This is what a community does. #bsidebananas

Ghosts of Summer Past September was a wild ride of torrential rain. I embraced the theory of only adding water and did very little to my yard this summer. But now it’s time to take inventory. I lost some parsley when the light in my yard changed and I didn’t notice. Some things struggled from the daily rains. My tomatoes died, but September isn’t traditionally their favorite month. My orchids were swamped and had to be relocated to drier land. It was bad last month with all the rain and gray days. Whiteflies and powdery mildew thrived on the undersides of my broad leaf plants and needed to be tamed by Neem oil. If your backyard looks like you’ve been having Jumanji game nights, don’t give up hope. October’s cooler weather will give us the perfect temperatures for yard work. Time change isn’t until November 1st so make the most of your sunfilled afternoons.

Pull weeds and cut back overgrown plants If your yard looks more “swamp thing” than “beachy tropical”, time to pull some weeds. Trim larger plants and bushes carefully. Some plants are safe to cut back now, but others are budding for next year. Research plants individually before giving them the “Edward Scissorhands” treatment. Also consider

re-mulching areas washed out by the heavy downpours.

Time to fertilize again The Rainy Season Ban ended September 30th. Check out bre vard.ifa s.ufl.e du/ordinances.shtml to find out what ordinances apply to you. Please follow the guidelines and protect our waterways.

Replant vegetable garden October is a great time to dig up plants and reseed a vegetable garden. The Farmer’s Almanac suggests starting seedbeds and flower gardens from October 3rd-5th according to the Moon Calendar. Kale and lettuce are

the best easiest plants to grow from seed. If you juice your vegetables, you’ll want at least ten plants so you have enough Kale to harvest. I’ve grown Malabar spinach with some success during the winter even though it truly thrives in the heat. Chinese cabbage is fun and I had a lot of luck last year with it. It is also a good time to plant strawberries. If your yard is more horror show than garden showcase, don’t fret. My yard currently resembles a mullet hair cut. Business neat in the front and tangled party in the back. The magic of gardening is taming the wild. Chaos can be bent back into lush beauty with a pair of shears and a little time. Few things in life are as magically transformational in just a handful of afternoons as a garden.

Reducing Food Waste By Nataleigh Palmer

The CNBC reported last April that Americans spend $165 billion dollars a year on wasted food. The average American household wasted roughly $2,000 a year. After a long weekend with the family, I’m convinced many of those wasted dollars were spent on kids’ meals. I have a nephew who will only eat meat if it’s rolled into a meatball. Another who mostly survives on milk, juice or soda. A niece who cries for a half hour if her food touches and another niece who won’t eat anything contaminated with onions, black pepper or tomatoes. These tiny tyrants can turn a well organized family party into a foodborne tragedy. Please consider the following tips to weather the approaching holiday culinary storm and save your family from heartbreak.

Teach them how to cook Kids are afraid you’ve secretly mashed up lima beans in that mystery casserole. Maybe a phantom vegetable soup still haunts their nightmares. The best way to cure your tots of fear of the unknown is to teach

them how to cook. Something magical happens when you’re entrusted to help feed your family. Small tasks such as adding cheese or sauce at the right time can empower them. With love and guidance, the most timid eaters can blossom into proud chefs.

Taste testers If you’re making an new dish for Thanksgiving why not try it out on the family a month early? Enlist your tiniest critic to taste test your newest creation. Ask them honestly if it needs more salt or pepper. Remind them they’re really helping you by providing an opinion.

Make nothing else Unless you want to spend your golden years having chicken nuggets for Thanksgiving, maybe it’s time for Timmy to try turkey. This last opinion

is for the bravest of the pickyeater parents. You venturing to a holiday party without Goldfish Crackers for Dictator Danny is a bold move. Sadly, there are also places that don’t allow you to bring your own food. This strikes terror in the hearts of picky eaters everywhere. I’ve seen a toddler meltdown at “The Happiest Place on Earth” because Mickey didn’t serve Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. You know, the one in the blue box. Now that’s brand loyalty. I’m happy to report she is alive and well and has expanded her palette. Legitimate food allergies, health and ethical food choices aside, picky eaters suffer from a limited food palette. Their world isn’t fated to be black and white forever. Hot dogs and chicken nuggets can be crowded out with better healthier alternatives over time. But the $2,000 budgetary hole created from wasted food prod us to be more mindful of what we put in our cart and on our plate.

Salsa Soiree By Samantha Deebel

Salsas are a great way to flavor food when cooking or just as a refreshing complement to any meal. I especially enjoy baking whitefish like cod for fish tacos and then topping them with mango peach salsa!

Strange Florida Folklore

Stikini According to ancient Seminole legends, there once were horrible creatures known as Stikini, or witch owls. Blending in with the tribes, the Stikini looked like humans by day. At night they would transform into owls. They would vomit up their internal organs, which they hung up on tree branches. The which owls would prowl through the lands, capturing victims and eating their hearts and lungs. In some variations, it was believed that saying their name out loud could cause you to turn into one of the dreaded Stikini.

were attempting to drive the Seminoles from their lands. Soon it became clear that Uncle Monday and the tribesmen would be defeated. Adamant that he would never be held captive again, Uncle Monday performed a ceremony using a combination of voodoo and tribal magic that allowed him to transform into an alligator. He turned into an alligator of such monstrous size that he became King of all the alligators in the Blue Sink. It is said that Uncle Monday can still transform into a man and will leave the waters to cast spells on any who dares to think they have more power than him.

Acrefoot Johnson

Uncle Monday

Zora Neale Hurston, acclaimed author and one of Eau Gallie’s most famous former residents, helped to share with the world the legend of Uncle Monday. Originally a holy man in Africa, Uncle Monday was part of a cult that claimed to share a close bond with reptiles. Uncle Monday was kidnapped by slave traders and then brought to America but he escaped for Florida where he joined the ranks of the Seminoles living in the area of Blue Sink. Together they fought against the Whites who

Another popular tale is that of Acrefoot Johnson. Rooted in fact, Acrefoot Johnson was actually a real man- James Mitchell Johnson. He was called “Acrefoot” due to his size 12 boots. Johnson was a Postman in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, and was very good at his job. So good in fact that legends began to circulate about him. There are tales of him winning races against carriages pulled by four horses, battling alligators, and carrying passengers strapped to armchairs on top of his shoulders along his routes. Johnson died in 1922, and his tombstone even states his creed: “The Mail Must Go Through.”

This drink comes from the heart of Mexico. Served in a large frosty mason jar, it’s cool and refreshing, ideal for hot days. Like a meal, this satisfying drink combines salty, sour, and sweet with a hint of spice. It’s like the best Bloody Mary you’ve ever had but much lighter because it’s made with beer. The straw is rolled in a fabulous sweet and salty tamarind paste that only gets better as you stir. Along with the salt and lime spiced rim, it just doesn’t get any better. This beverage is so popular in other parts of the world that beer companies are trying to replicate them. But homemade is always better. Mexico’s Grill is a small authentic restaurant located in the Publix plaza across from the Cocoa Beach Pier. Everything is homemade in traditional styles, including corn tortillas, gordita bread, verda and red sauce, making it the only one of its kind in the area. Simple street style tacos with choice of six different meats are only $1.50 on Tuesdays (excluding the fish). Newly added dinner platters include traditional sides. The carne asada steals the show! Homemade sangria and fresh fruit waters add to this uniquely authentic Mexican family run restaurant.

Michelada Ingedients 46 fl oz. Pitcher (Serves approx. 5-6 people) V8 bottle 2 quart (original flavor) 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1/4 teaspoon of pepper Juice of four limes 1 teaspoon Maggi sauce, can be found a Publix, or use soy sauce 1 teaspoon Tajin (chili/ lime seasoning, can be found at Publix) Lime wedges & tamarind chili straws for garnish

Preparation Mix the tomato juice (V8), lime juice, salt, pepper, Maggi, and chili Tajin together in a pitcher. For both presentation and taste rim a large mason jar or glass with lime juice and chili Tajin. Add ice and prepared cocktail mixture. Finally mix in your choice of beer, a Mexican beer like Corona or Modelo makes it taste more authentic. For the final touch, add a lime wedge to the glass and the tamarind chile straw.

Open Business for

Salty Sweet

Seeking Balance on the Board and In Life By Nataleigh Palmer • Photography by Nathan Adams ESM

Crystal Cooper is a team player who knows that success isn’t a solo journey. She’s been inspired by her friends and competitors, both in and out of the waves. Friendships fostered as a teen have built retail partnerships that have strengthened her clothing brand. The Cocoa Beach Pier has served as both her main retailer and hosts her surfing etvents. Many of the same people still work there and have always supported her dreams. Salty Sweet’s brand name celebrates the balance between the power of women (the salt) and feminine sweetness. The yang and yin balance is something Cooper strives for within herself, her family, and her business. The Salty Sweet clothing line features shirts, tanks, hats and stickers for the girl who loves the waves. One of her signature shirts is a super-soft Tahiti blue V-neck with the symbols for peace and love followed by the word “saltwater” spelled out. Cooper surfed local contests since age 15 and was sponsored by a variety of companies. She studied the way surf expos promoted their brands and worked to develop her own. It hasn’t been easy. “I went through a whirlwind of personal upheaval. I lost my parents and became a single mother within a three-year period. It was hard but I don’t feel like I lost out. I appreciate and savor every moment I had with my parents.” Cooper realized how unpredictable life could be and put a priority on living her dreams. “We all experience loss in our lives. Either

through losing a loved one or circumstance, it’s important to continue and grow. I was lucky that my parents let me take control of my life at a young age. I was homeschooled and traveled to Costa Rica by myself at 17. I want to cultivate that freedom in my daughter, Emmy. She needs to know how to find her dream and achieve it. I want her to do whatever she wants in life and have faith in herself. Consistency is key. You can’t falter. I couldn’t have done it without solid relationships within the community. I’m lucky that sponsors who supported me as a surfer now sponsor my brand.” It wasn’t easy for a single mom with a full-time job to start her brand. She designed and fabricated in moments after work and after her daughter’s bedtime. Her logo design (a wave with a heart) was inspired by a tattoo a friend drew for her. She never followed through with it but used the drawing as

a base to design the logo. Over the years, it morphed into a logo that’s nothing like the original. But the spirit behind it remained the same. “People recognize the stickers now. They know if they see someone with our sticker on their board that they can smile. It’s become a symbol for positive energy. I like the idea that compassion and competition can coexist.” Compassionate competition is the foundation of the Salty Sweet Surf Team and her brand as well. “There’s a quote by Sensei Ogui, ‘A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms.’ We have a wide variety of competitors from age five to 60 and they all have something different to bring to the waves.” Cooper believes that everyone should strive to be the best version of themselves. Instead of trying to find a brand to represent, she founded a brand to represent her philosophy of balance. “I just want to be me. I try to build a healthy circle and raise my daughter to respect others. I’ve carefully built my business around my life. I’ve thought about what kind of opportunities I’d like to provide her.” Last year she founded the Salty Sweet Women’s Pro/ AM Surf Contest. Cooper said, “I had to go door to door and say give me $2,500 and trust me, I’ll host an amazing surf competition.” Her hard work and the talent of her dedicated volunteers helped earn their event the title “Best New Surf Contest of 2014” by Eastern Surf Magazine. Cooper remarked, “This year we’re more well known and we have a lot of support from the community.”

The 2nd Annual Salty Sweet Women’s Pro/ AM Surf Contest, will be held on October 17th. It starts at 8am and is located at the Cocoa Beach Pier. The competition has every seat full and boasts 176 competitors; 56 Professional and 120 Amateur. The professional purse is $5,000. The Pro Longboard purse is $2,500 and the Pro Shortboard is $2,500. The Fat Donkey is awarding the Best Wipeout Award, named the “Redonkulous Award”. The Award Ceremony is scheduled for 7pm at Keith’s Oyster Bar, at the Cocoa Beach Pier. Lance-O, owner of Reggae production company Kulcha Shok Muzik, will commentate for the second year in a row. “We love having him bringing the positive vibes over the mic throughout the event,” Cooper says. Cooper is very pleased with the direction of the competition and her company. “ I’m stoked to be a peer to such great surfers. We’re very grassroots. Home grown, for surfers by surfers. I’m not blindly trying to make money. It’s a business; but I’m looking at the long term. I want to cultivate the legacy of the brand.” When asked about her plans for the future she smiled, “I’m a mommy first. But you have to strive for balance. You have to live your dreams, now. You can’t put it off till tomorrow.”

Electric Oranges By Nataleigh Palmer

Electric Oranges is a pop-up, upcycled vintage boutique that represents everything cool, chic and environmentally friendly. Best friends and owners Carly Sinigoi and Sarah Starling say they’ve been stylishly thrifty since childhood. Electric Oranges opens or “pops-up” for festivals and events. The girls have spent the last year or so building a loyal following, especially among the outgoing and fashion forward. They use Facebook and Insta g ram to alert their customers to their pop-up locations. The Electric Oranges carry a variety of styles from goth to preppy to hippy and ever ything in between. They spotlight styles not currently ma instream and difficult to find elsewhere. Vintage thrifting provides fashion for all walks of life and for those with an appreciation for the classics. Both Sinigoi and Starling also love the idea of giving clothes a second life. Upcycling through repair and repurposing saves beautiful clothes from the discard heap. One of the

most intriguing treasures was donated by a fan. Sinigoi explained, “This awesome hippie dude gifted us this amazing leather fringe vest that he wore at Woodstock. If only that thing could talk.” Starling added, “Just like a lot of our clothes, it’s the story behind them that sells them.” They started their business in 2014 according to Sinigoi. “Over a year ago, there was an event called Urban Trade in Melbourne and we decided to share a booth with some friends. We dug stuff out of our own weird closets. We created a workshop in my living room and started Electric Oranges. We tore clothes apart to create new pieces. We dyed, tiedyed, added trims, patches, buttons, you name it. If we have a beautiful vintage piece in great

condition we like to keep it as is. But if it needs a little love then we ‘electrify’ it.” It was this electrification that inspired the name. Starling explained, “We drew inspiration

from this old punk/new wave club called Electric Banana. Being Florida girls, “oranges” fits so well. Electric Oranges was born from there.” An eclectic mix of yesterday and today inspires their personal fashion tastes as well. Starling loves combining pieces from different eras. “I have a passion for vintage. I wear whatever speaks to me. Beachy one day, maybe Boho the next. I have no overarching philosophy. I just believe in self-expression. I had a cool mom who let me pair up creative combinations. I wore whatever I wanted to wear at an early age.” Sinigoi shares her view but has her own spin. “If society is going to make us wear clothes, they might as well be fun.” The lure of the hunt pulls at the heart of every good thrifter according to Sinigoi. “We love a good hunt. We love dirty, messy disorganized old

thrift stores the best. What we’re looking for with our weird radar is textiles. I can pick out the vintage textile from across the room.” Sinigoi and Starling have enjoyed meeting other local artisans. Starling noted the strong sense of community in Eau Gallie in particular. “Eau Gallie Arts District is keen on working together. The artist community is very supportive of each other. On October 10th we will be part of an event in EGAD called Vintage Revival. It’s a street market. Highland Ave is lined with some very unique vendors that day. They sell everything from vintage and upcycled home décor to shabby chic furnishings and vintage clothing, of course.” Electric Oranges eagerly supports other locals as well. Electric Oranges sponsors surfer Shay Mahoney who is competing in the upcoming 2nd Annual Salty Sweet Women’s Pro/AM on October 17th. Starling explained, “We’re a fan of her art. She’s been very supportive of us. We’re proud to sponsor her.” Sinigoi added, “We like to support our local girls. We think of the local girl when we look at pieces and price them affordability.” Without brick and mortar, Sinigoi and Starling continue to thrive in the pop-up world of festivals and events. They’d like to expand their shop to something more portable. Sinigoi recently located a vintage trailer. ”We have been remodeling a 1960s trailer into a mobile boutique. It will be fun way to bring our treasures around to all the events. So keep an eye out for that in the weeks to come.” Electric Oranges offers a modern spin on styles that spans the decades and the imaginations of two local artists. Their clothes racks include something for everyone. The next pop-up event is October 10th at the Rehab Vintage Market. Clear your calendar and pay them a visit. Uncover your inner goth goddess, posh princess or hippie bohemian and have fun with fashion.

Electric Oranges will pop-up in EGAD for the Vintage Revival on Highland Ave, Melbourne on October 10th. Follow Electric Oranges on their Facebook page for their next event in your area. O CTO B E R 2015

They have provided us the love and medical care that we need and deserve. In June, we even went to the dentist! We endured some costly dental surgery because our teeth were terribly neglected by our original owner. Poor Coco had 15 teeth pulled, and Casper had four taken out! It was pretty rough at the time, but now we feel so much better.

What could be better than one adorable Chihuahua? How about these two precious 11 and 10 year old male Chihuahuas that are the best of friends? Howdy, we are Coco and Casper! We are one dynamic duo that is looking to add lots of love and snuggles to your days. If you are looking for an easygoing pair of cuties, then we are the perfect furry guys for you. It is important to note that we are a bonded pair that needs be adopted together to our new forever home. We have beautiful doggy dreams of an owner who has a relaxed lifestyle. Someone who is happy to give us lots of love, and likes to relax on the couch. Cats are not our favorite furry creatures, so we would prefer not to have them as housemates. Back in May, our owner moved away and ditched us at the animal shelter. We were not our best selves there. Anytime someone walked past, we barked at them. As you can imagine, that really hurt our chances of getting adopted. At the end of May, our doggy luck changed for the better when our favorite humans at Friends for Animals Sanctuary busted us out of the shelter! Since then, we have been having an extended slumber party with an awesome FFAS foster family.

The next step of our journey is to be adopted by a fantastic forever-family. A new home would make us so very happy, and allow other deserving animals to be rescued by FFAS. For more information about our sweet selves, please email our human friends at adopt@friendsforanimalsfl.org or check us out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/friendsforanimalssanctuary. Executive Cigar

likes and dislikes to allow them to really enjoy what they’re purchasing. What suggestions do you have for pairing a cigar with a drink? When pairing a cigar with a beer here at our shop, it’s just like pairing steak and fish with wines and beers. You want similarities in both. For instance, a full-bodied cigar that contains notes of cocoa or nuts will most likely pair very well with something on the darker side, such as a stout or porter. If you want something smack dab in the middle of the scale, try a medium bodied cigar with an ale or a spicy cigar with an IPA. Milder cigars will be great with just about any beer as they don’t really influence the taste so much. Tell us about the atmosphere at Executive Cigar. What sets it apart?

Please give us a little background on yourself -hobbies, interests, family/ professional history, etc. Originally from Southern Indiana, I moved to Melbourne in 2003 after needing “a change.” In 2011 while on the soccer field with my daughter during a game, my friend Tony Nardone approached me. He’d just bought his father’s business and offered a me a position. I agreed to help for three months. After three months, I was screwed because I really enjoyed breathing new life into the cigar shop. What’s your favorite thing about tending bar? My favorite thing about tending bar is my customers. I’ve kind of turned into Rhea Perlman’s character, Carla, on Cheers. I say, within some boundaries, what’s on my mind and won’t let anyone give me a hard time. If they do, I easily brush it off if I don’t laugh about it first. After four years, I love having someone walk in and say, “She’s still here!” Hearing someone say they are glad to see I’m still here is not only a comfort to them, but a testament to the shop as a whole.

What would you order for your last meal? My last meal would be all of the dishes from my late great-grandmother’s Thanksgiving Day dinner table: Turkey, green bean casserole, stuffing, pea salad, cranberry sauce from the can sliced up (not the real stuff,) corn pudding, sweet potato casserole, corn bread, Hawaiian rolls, real butter, cranberry frosty dessert, pumpkin pie with Cool Whip, pecan pie, and sweet tea with no lemon. Please explain a bit about flavor notes and what people look for when choosing a cigar. When I’m trying to help a customer find a new cigar they want to try, the first thing I ask is “what do you normally like?” If the cigar they normally smoke has notes of pepper or spice, that tells me it could be more on the full-bodied scale of the spectrum. So I’ll help them find a cigar that best matches that profile. If they like something that tastes like chocolate or coffee or more earthy flavors like vanilla or nuts, I’ll steer them in that direction. Everyone’s palate is different, so it’s important to hone in on their

When people ask me about Executive Cigar, I say the same thing over and over. “I love this place.” I was lucky enough to be a customer of the shop for four years prior to working here. So I’ve always felt comfortable being in these walls. Knowing Tony, the owner, and Larry, the manager, as well as most of the customers, really helped in my ability to provide the best service possible. Over the years, we’ve come to use the term “family” when describing the staff ’s relationship. Seeing our closeness has given our customers more of an ability to be comfortable here themselves. Our wonderful customers, new and long-term, have really become a part of the shop in a way unlike other places. It truly is like the TV show “Cheers.” Our atmosphere is very laidback, relaxing, and enjoyable. I can’t tell you how many people tell us “I come here specifically for the atmosphere.” It really is like being at home…but better! Any parting words of wisdom? My parting words of wisdom for anyone is always the same: “Stay out of jail.”

General Eyes by Kelsie Sandage

General Eyes is categorized as a ska-reggae band, but there is much more than what appears to the eye. Each member of General Eyes brings a different strength to the band that has helped them surpass being ‘ordinary.’ Mike Burns (lead vocals, guitarist, and trumpeter) lends a jazz-pop vibe. Evan Bernard (bassist) brings a touch of classic along with funk. Dustin Foster (drummer) contributes the ska and reggae beat while Jake Salter (lead guitarist, vocals, and keyboardist) supplies an almost hip-hop blues feel to their mix. Their name comes from a discussion on wordplay between Burns and Foster. Burns told us the name General Eyes “shines light on the fact that we are the complete opposite of general expectations. We never want to ‘Generalize’ our music because our music is what means most to us in life.” “Making money from playing music has always been an afterthought. It is a benefit and perk, and a beautiful feeling, and we do not take that for granted. As far as our writing process on that point, we maintain the same ideal. We could go after the style of music that sells much easier, but instead, we choose to do what suits our souls- keeping it real. In the reggae scene, it is common for bands to mimic the average sounds,” said Burns. “We have always kept our track straight with the concepts of love, equality, and sounds that truly come from our hearts. In the beginning, being generic and doing what everyone else has done – or is doing – may have helped us gain popularity, but in the end, we have come 100% further by staying true to ourselves and what truly

means something to us.” Their first full-length album, entitled “Frequent Sea” (a pun aimed at the word ‘frequency’ and perfectly fitting for a band that calls Cocoa Beach home), showcases their versatile style through original songs; what they feel to be their “strongest booking and selling points.” Burns says the band credits WRRJ 89.7 FM of Cocoa Beach for “giving us a seriously incredible push towards getting our music in the correct outlet, and gaining fans.” WRRJ has been playing General Eyes song “The Climb” regularly since they opened to Brevard listeners a few months ago. Their second single, “Lovin’ Feeling” is now being rotated regularly on WRRJ. Another local radio station, WFIT 89.5, has also taken notice and is playing their music. General Eyes have had a great couple years as they’ve grown as a band. Next on their journey of success, they plan on releasing their second fulllength album by March of 2016. They are currently in the middle of the writing process, and have about eight of their desired 13 songs ready. “The new album will keep the same blended-genre feel of ‘Frequent Sea,’” says Burns. “Over time, we have become stronger individually, tighter as a band, and even tighter as friends. It will also have a greater influence in writing from our newest member, Jake Salter. He has brought an understanding to the utilization of a clean hip-hop sound, more blues influence, and different lyrical ideas.” “And,” Burns adds. “I want to add a Latin influence to a song or two on the upcoming album.” After releasing their next album, they hope to tour the nation during the summer of 2016 in support of their new album. Foster has been working on a complete US venue list to align their goals and make it happen.

General Eyes will be playing Rusty’s Reggaewee Bash on the 24th, as well as the 15th, and 29th. They’re also at Milliken’s Reef on October 4th and 23rd. Album Reviews by M.A. Rivera

The Radio EP American Pinup

Altercation Records, 2015 American Pinup self-identify as a punk-pop band and all that does is sell them short. With this four song EP, they manage to navigate through four distinctly different numbers. From roaring, oversized choruses to dramatic whispers, American Pinup pulls off a clever balancing act on this musical tightrope.

“The Radio” is a funky shuffle pushed along by a some inventive drumming and the use of space. Most punks would choose to paint with a different color palate. It’s easy to get attached to songs like “Committed” which swells with big, hooky “Whoa-ohs”. Full of sweet melodies and crackling guitars, this is crunchpop at its finest. It would be easy to focus on Lauren West’s darkly evocative voice, but this band loves to throw in subtle touches which help make the songs stand apart.

Freedom Live At The Atlanta Pop Festival

The Jimi Hendrix Experience Sony Legacy, 2015

Hendrix and the Experience live could be hit or miss. Most of the show rested on Jimi’s considerable shoulders. This 1970 performance was captured at the Atlanta Pop Festival, before a crowd purported to be the largest festival to date in the US, (roughly 400,000).It was dubbed as a Southern Woodstock.

This latest two disc release is available on vinyl for those so inclined. Hendrix’s sizable archives starts with a positively incendiary (excuse the pun) reading of “Fire.” Disc One roils back and forth with an emphasis on more restrained, bluesier numbers, “Lover Man,” Red House,” and a slow burning “Hear My Train A Comin’.” “Spanish Castle Magic,” one of Hendrix’s more quirky numbers, is fleshed out early on. A solid set of songs to be sure. But then there’s Disc Two. With the trio tearing into their rendition of Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” they set in motion a really memorable second half of the show. “Foxey Lady,” Purple Haze,” and “Hey Joe,” are attacked with incisive skill and genuine enthusiasm. These are all FM standards now, but at the time they were still dangerous and intimidating new musical stylings . The “Star Spangled Banner” is played against a backdrop of exploding fireworks, elevating it above any other versions of the song. When people talk about Hendrix’s deft, groundbreaking guitar histrionics, it stumbles into the realm of blind hero worship. This performance gives those manic declarations their credence. As a kid first getting excited about music, I worked with a guy who’d seen a great many shows in the 60’s by now legendary, nay mythical, performers. I asked if he’d ever seen Hendrix, and his response was memorable. “Yeah, in Atlanta. While he was onstage I got my ass kicked by two guys who thought I was looking at one of their girlfriends.” I’m hoping he’ll get a chance to hear this release and finally enjoy the show he missed the first time around.

The Snails The Snails

Action Records, 2011 The Snails are everything you want and need in a great garage band. Burly and rawboned, rough on the edges with some occasionally sweet sentiments buried deep within. There’s a familiar and seedy vibe the band exudes as they muscle their way through the songs in this eponymous collection. The guitar tone Lampros K generates is filthy and smells of burnt oil. “Sidewalks” sneers and snarls through a jolting 3 minutes, 30 seconds. “Haifa Nights” is controlled chaos and stunning for the way the harmonica and guitar harmonize, tearing the familiar melody into something dangerous and seductive. With “I’m Five Years Ahead of my Time,” they channel the ghost of Arthur Lee and Love at it’s finest. Psychedelic, swirling and hypnotic, the song stammers and howls in irresistible fits. Like that beater car you bought where something’s always going wrong, but refuses to quit, this is a persistent and dogged performance. “Tide” honks and spits like an Animals’ B-side. Disenfranchised, austerity-measured Greeks channeling angry, post-war-everything-rationed Brits, channeling depression-era Mississippi Delta bluesmen, ya’ll dig? The songs continue to get better as you venture deeper into the disc. “Gypsy Woman” and “Satisfaction Guaranteed” burn as fast and brightly as a shooting star. At the end, and just because they can, they throw in a surf rock ditty which shreds effortlessly. The Snails are edgy and gaunt. They have a simply propulsive rhythm section, but their secret weapon is the harmonica seamlessly exchanging leads with the guitar. Fourteen songs on here and not a dud in the lot. In this day and age of the interweb, you have no reason for not having this brighten your playlist.

I love traveling to music shows. My favorite is TomorrowWorld. The lights and sound is incredible. I’ve been to Mardi Gras in New Orleans over 25 times. I DJed on the Playboy balcony during a Super Bowl. They had dancers who stripped on the hour. Not a bad gig.

My mom saw an ad for a DJ and I bluffed my way into the job. I hosted a weekly teen night at American Lifestyles Health Club in Melbourne where the dance floor was the Racquetball court. My first steady gig was in Cocoa Beach at a 50s Diner called Herbie K’s and I hosted hula hoop lessons. Herbie K’s is closed now. Its former location is now a flower bed at the entrance of the Double Tree Resort. I worked this gig at night while commuting daily to Amity Harbor at Universal Studios to be the Jaws boat driver. DJing brought me to the attention of a smart group of guys who published a monthly underground music paper called INK 19. I became their delivery boy, ad executive, and occasional writer. Best of all it afforded me the chance to host a weekly radio show on WA1A for almost four years during the mid 90s. It was called the Sunday Night R.A.G.E. (Retro, Alternative, Grunge Experience).

The Art Side

David Cruey

Built from, surrounds himself with, and exudes art. By Kelsie Sandage paintings and poetry have a symbiotic connection. “My poetry develops as my painting materializes,” says Cruey. “Basking in poetry leads the completion of the conquered canvas.” His affection for art was cultivated at a young age. Both his mother and his brother are artists and there are many musicians in his family. His brother’s detailed acrylic paintings are inspired

His dedication to exploring all art has to offer is evident in his colorful paintings. No matter the subject, his art and self proclaimed “artistically debonair” poetry reveals his self-expression with every word and brushstroke. For Cruey, his painting and poetry is a cathartic process that helps him explore and understand his thoughts and life. He thinks of his paintings as “bold exuberant imagery, spattered pigment.” His

the

by surrealists such as Salvador Dali or René Magritte. His mother mainly used oils to paint seascapes. Cruey initially thought his style didn’t reflect his family’s creative inclinations. He now realizes his current style of painting is a combination of the two influences. Music also has a powerful impact on his artistic work. His eclectic taste ensures that he’ll never knows which genre will come up next on his playlist. He says that each song takes his paintings on “their own separate journeys.” Painting wasn’t Cruey’s first artistic passion. He began drawing from the time he could hold a pencil. He found his inspiration for his realistic graphite renderings through classic pinup artists such as Alberto Vargas, Olivia De Berardinis and Mel Ramos. “Although I could draw beautiful photorealistic images, it was more technical than creative. Graphite allowed me to explore my talent in a safe medium,” says Cruey. “I do believe my paintings today wouldn’t be as impressive were it not for my past passion.” It is obvious that passion is what drives Cruey. It is what makes him thrive. He wanted to find a career that followed his passions, allowing him to wake up every morning and create. He became a screen printer. “The inception of this path began after I saw one of my commissioned caricatures on a shirt,” says Cruey. “I embraced the industry. Over the past twenty years, I have designed for classic car shows, biker events, AMA racing, and motorcycle related industries. In Fremont, California, a business partner and I created DNA design and printing. Business boomed since we held large accounts in the Silicon Valley at the beginning of the dot com era. We mainly printed

for some major motorcycle clubs as well as event related tees.” After bouncing around the states, in 2002 Cruey visited his brother, Danny, who was living in Brevard County. “Coming from the busy Bay Area, it was a treat arriving in this laidback and friendly environment. You could say Brevard spoke to me,” says

Cruey. “Looking for roots, I found a great job as the art director of Tropical Design, a local screen printing company. Because of this position and the very down-to-earth community, I made my home here in Brevard. Since moving to Florida in 2003, I’ve mostly worked on shirts for space shuttle launches, fishing enthusiasts, and several major surfing companies.” For the past ten years, Cruey has continued to make his mark on the Space Coast and has no plans for slowing down. His new exhibit, Journeys, will make its public debut on October 17th at Aquarian Dreams in Indialantic. The exhibit will present Cruey’s poetry along with his paintings. The Skinny On “Skate To School” By Scooter Newell • sk8scooter@gmail.com www.cocoabeachskatepark.com

Athletes can be awarded college scholarships or even a “full-ride” based on how well they perform in their respective sport while maintaining academic criteria. This is one of the best ways for some hard-working athletes to get a college education. We have decided that it is now time for skateboarders to also have scholarship opportunities based on their performances in competitions. We will be embarking on a new project this fall: Skate To School. Skate To School is a skateboard competition series for students in 9th-12th grade. We have set up a scholarship fund and have already started raising money through raffles and donations. While we are far from

giving any skater a “full-ride” scholarship, our goal is to create scholarship denominations of at least $500.00 for the top three skaters in each contest. We are hoping to raise enough money to have at least two competitions per year. Our first contest will be Saturday, November 21st. Check out SkateToSchool.com for more information. The Skate To School Scholarship Fund was envisioned to reward top skaters of skateboard competitions with college education scholarships. The contests are held for students in grades 9 through 12 only and will be an “Open Division” format, no age groups or other divisions. Skaters can earn scholarships based on how well they place in the contests. Skaters can participate in Skate To School as long as they are in high school and are only allowed to compete for four years. Skate To School Scholarships are managed by The Community Foundation for Brevard. They are an

independent 501(c)(3) organization that specializes in managing many different types of scholarships, including ours. Our staff will handle all competition operations. The Community Foundation for Brevard will be managing all scholarship awards and will be overseeing all scholarship fund donations. All donations go directly into the fund and can only be used for scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to one or more students based on the skateboard contest guidelines and on satisfying the legal requirements of a competitive scholarship award process as established by the Community Foundation. The amount of each scholarship will be dependent upon the funds available. In other words, we will not promise a scholarship purse for an event without already having the scholarship dollars in the Skate To School fund. Eligible applicants will come from a broad pool of candidates (skaters) and donors may not control the selection process. Each skateboard contest will be judged by at least three independent and qualified judges. Skaters placing high enough in contests may earn a scholarship opportunity. This can be claimed and awarded

upon graduation of high school or home school equivalent with a 2.5 GPA or higher. Students may accumulate multiple scholarship award opportunities from placing in multiple contests. The Foundation will also review and validate student claims for scholarship award distribution prior to final award. The scholarship will be paid directly to the educational institution. We can’t have these kids buying boards instead of books! Students who graduate and don’t enroll in postsecondary education or vocational training within one year after high school graduation will forfeit the scholarship awards earned in the skateboard competition(s). Unclaimed scholarship awards will be retained by the Foundation and used for subsequent contest awards. Scholarship awards may only be used for tuition, books, tools, uniforms and other training related expenses and on-campus room and board. If at any time the scholarship skateboard competitions are discontinued and uncommitted dollars remain in the fund, the balance shall be distributed in the form of grants to support art and music programs of Cocoa

Of course we are not hoping to discontinue what we have just barely started and this is kind of an odd contingency perhaps, but an important one that had to be put in place. It was in these types of Cocoa Beach art and music programs where many seeds of many dreams like Skate To School were first planted. Dream on, kids! Dream big! The Grind For Life series continues October 24th in Bradenton, FL. Check out GrindForLife.org for more info. Join us Friday, October 30th for the Ghost Jam Best Trick Contest and Skate To School Fundraiser Raffle. Also, big congrats to Elijah Allred for winning the NKF Surf N Turf for 2015! Five years ago we started a combination surf and skate contest with the surfing part held at the NKF Rich Salick Surf Festival. We had a blast this year and are already looking forward to next year.

We will be looking for volunteers and donations of food drinks and perhaps prizes. Vendors and Sponsors email ScooterNewell@gmail.com for more info.

Boardrider ofthe Month by Jenny Bilchak

Kia and Kaya McCutchan Both girls have the same background when it came to learning to surf and skate. For as long as they could remember they both surfed with their dad on his long board. “When I became a teenager, I finally had the confidence to go out by myself and I fell in love,” Kia mentioned. Kia and Kaya were introduced to skateboarding by a Beachside Resident favorite, “Amazing Grace” Marhoefer. Now it’s not just

There is something to see when you get a chance to be around siblings who enjoy one another. Listening to the experiences they’ve shared, the stories that finally come up to their parents years later and the everlasting bonds they create together can be truly astounding. This month I had the pleasure of sitting down with sisters Kialani (Kia) and Makaya (Kaya) McCutchan. The girls are two and half years apart and they have a tendency to finish each

others sentences. You can tell they’re not just sisters, but best friends as well. Kia (17) and Kaya (15) are both native Cocoa Beach kids and wouldn’t trade the beach lifestyle for anything. Kia is focusing a lot on school and surfing right now. She’s thinking about college but isn’t quite ready to make any decisions yet. “I know I want a career that has to do with and keeps me near to the ocean,” she said. Kaya, in a similar vein, tells us, “I can only think of my dream job of being a pro-surfer, or being able to travel the world doing surf photography.”

that inspire them, but all the people that they share the waves with at 4th Street. They could not be more grateful or welcomed by the same faces they see almost everyday in the water. “It’s nice to call everyone a friend, no matter what the age,” said Kia. Kaya adds, “Fun with my friends is still my biggest inspiration out in the water. The ocean also helps me stay calm and start my day off right, there’s nothing like surfing before school and seeing the sun rise on your board.” Salty Sweet is not the only hot brand these sisters are repping now a days. With the help of

a toy, but a means of transportation as well as a training device for surfing. Both sisters are members of a famous local group called the “4th Street Shredders” and they’re reppin’ the Salty Sweet Team. The Shredders formed last October at the First Annual Salty Sweet Pro/ Am. The contest brought a few local girls together and the motivation between them all humbled our surf community. The sisters mentioned that it’s not just the group of girls

SS the team has been picked up by ECC Longboards which the girls use to practice on when waves are flat. Kia is sponsored by Neilson surfboards, Kaya is rocking Peili Surf Boards, and their sun kissed skin is being protected by Rubber Ducky Sunscreen. I asked the girls what they’re riding in the water. Kia said her main board is her 5’7” Neilson epoxy short board and Kaya is choosing between a 7’2” Walden, 5’9” Peli, and her brand new 5’6” tweener she received for her

birthday last month. Kaya did mention that her favorite board to ride is her Dad’s 9’ Jeff Thomas long board. With these under their feet the girls contest results were very impressive over the last year, and earned them some welldeserved attention. Kia and Kaya were a pleasure to sit down with and get to know. I’m very happy to now call them friends as well. As always, I asked what advice if any they would like to give out to the groms; Kia said, “Stay humble no matter your age, be nice in the water and share waves.” Kaya said, “Do good

in school and stay away from drugs. Surfers get a bad rap for doing them, just prove it wrong.” They also were happy to give a few shout outs; first to Mom and Dad for always taking them to the beach no matter what the hour, The Salty Sweet Team, 4th Street Shredders, Rubber Ducky, ECC Longboards, Cocoa Beach Skatepark and Tom Neilson. Again, it was my pleasure to sit down with the McCutchan sisters. Readers, when you see these girls lets their enthusiasm engulf you, it’s well worth it. Thanks everyone and see you in the water. We don’t often give water a second thought. But we really need to give it some serious consideration.

WE’RE BACK! November 27–29 NEW FRIDAY NIGHT

O CTO B E R 2015

We are all water creatures. 60% of our body, 70% of our brain, and 80% of our blood is made up of water. All living creatures require water to survive. 70% of the Earth is covered by water! So what’s the big deal? 98% of water on earth is not drinkable because it is salty. Only about 2% is fresh water. Most of the freshwater (87%) is in glaciers and ice caps. All the fresh surface water accounts for only 1% of fresh water in the world, less than 0.007% of all the water on Earth. Groundwater is the source of most drinking water around the world, but is only about 0.08% of the Earth’s total water. Around the world and in the US many fresh water aquifers are being used faster than they can be replenished. Central Florida could deplete its groundwater supply in the next decade. We only have a limited supply of fresh water that is constantly being recycled through the water cycle. For eons the same small amount of fresh water has been used and reused by various organisms to dissolve the minerals and nutrients they require for life. A cup of water you drink today contains molecules from millions of earlier life forms like dinosaurs and neanderthals. What are we using this vital resource for today? Agriculture uses 37% of the fresh water. It takes over 600 gallons of water to produce one hamburger,

more that 10 gallons to produce a single slice of bread, and about 1,000 gallons to produce one gallon of milk. Manufacturing processes need fresh water, too. It takes over 39,000 gallons to produce a new car, and over 700 gallons to produce a cotton tee shirt. The largest water users are China, India and the United States. But when you adjust use based on population, Americans use three times more water per person than Chinese or Indian citizens. Central Africans use about 1/50th the volume of water as the average American. In the US homes use over 50% of public water supply. The largest use of fresh water is flushing the toilet (26.8%), followed by laundry (21.7%), and bathing (16.8%). 30% is used for watering lawns and gardens. Only about 5% of this life sustaining resource is actually used for cooking and drinking. In areas where water is scarce you see signs like, “In this land of fun in the sun, we don’t flush for number one”. We can capture water in rain barrels for watering gardens, cultivate yards suitable for the local environment, take shorter showers, and repair leaky faucets. Even shutting off water while brushing teeth helps. Ultimately we need to learn to consume less. The US has about 5% of the Earth’s humans, but we consume 25% of the Earth’s

resources, many of which require large amounts of water to acquire and convert into products. There is no way that developing countries aspiring to the North American lifestyle can be supported by our planet. Water may well be the limiting factor that is already starting to affect geopolitics around the world and even here in the USA. In California their historical drought has led to regulations aimed at reducing water use. Many California farmers have switched to drip irrigation, reducing water loss due to evaporation. Through government mandated and voluntary conservation efforts one Southern California water district is saving one billion gallons per day. That is how much water New York City uses in a day. Californians now regard water as a scarce resource. It is that attitude that can save that state, and the rest of us as well, from a thirsty demise. It’s time to give water a second thought. Please join us.

Fishing Reports

The Time of the Redfish Spawn By Capt. Jamie Glasner www.finandflycharters.com

The redfish are here ranging from all different lengths and weighing up to 39 pounds. The best time to target these fish is when the wind is calm.

The Calm Before the Cool By Capt. Scott Bussen of the Relentless II www.fishrelentless.com

Well, at least the weather in September was good. Not that the fishing was bad or anything, but the weather was good far more days than not. As far as the fishing goes, it was fairly steady for the month. There were a few days that the kingfishing was on fire, but the bite turned off about as fast as it started. There were also a surprising number of mahi caught last month. Seemed like a few more than I can remember in past Septembers. Now that it’s October, we can probably forget about that continuously calm weather we had last month. October is just one of those months when there’s generally far fewer fishable days than blow outs. But, don’t fret, I’ve seen it flip the script a time or two. Just be prepared with reschedule

dates if you are going to plan a trip offshore. Some of the best fishing this month could be the option closest to the Port. The fall mullet run has been steadily ramping up all month and seems to be poised to peak in October. The fishing around the migrating baitfish can be astonishing. Tarpon, jacks, snook, blues, Spanish mackerel, sharks and big redfish will all be a possibility around the bait pods. It could be a free for all with everybody bringing their appetite to the table. When fishing around the bait pods, the best bait will be whatever matches the pod you’re fishing. If you’re fishing finger mullet pods, use finger mullet. If you’re

on pogies, use pogies. The sliding sinker rig will probably be the best all around rig, but free lining the bait may also work at times. If you like artificials, bucktails, grubs and plugs could all get fool their share of fish. Just make sure and try to match the lure to the bait you are fishing around. The livebaiting this month will likely be spotty and sporadic. The kings will probably remain a bit scattered out. But, as long as the water conditions remain favorable, there could be steady action. Along with the kings, there should be an occasional mahi, tuna, cobia or sailfish. The bottom fishing should be OK as long as the water conditions remain good. It may take a bit of looking, but there should be enough amberjack to keep things interesting. The grouper will be a little harder to find, but there’s still a chance to catch one or two. I know it’s not the most intriguing fishing report, but there are still plenty of options to make you get out there and try something. Better do it now before it starts getting cold! See ya on the pond!

This makes it easier to read the water and get on them. If you love to catch redfish, this is the time I highly recommend you to book a trip with me. You will not regret it. Tarpon is also another species were targeting in the river. Fifty to 100 pound tarpon on the channel drop offs doesn’t get any better. Live pogies have been the bait of choice but you can still get them to bite a live mullet or a top water. If you by chance come across these tarpon keep a sharp eye out for those spawning redfish I mentioned earlier. I’ve seen them

together the past couple trips I’ve done. The trout bite on the other hand has been hit or miss. It

definitely isn’t like it was last year for them. There’s tons of little dink trout on the drop offs but that’s only fun for the first five minutes. Most

of the big gator trout that I have seen have been up tight to the shoreline in some super skinny water. The offshore fishing has been ok when the water is clean. A few kingfish have been caught on the reef with a cobia popping up every now and then. On the shoals the lady fish, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel have been plentiful. Some snook have also been being caught in the port around the jetties and also along the beach. A few flounder are being caught here and there. Well that’s all I have for ya. If you make it out, good luck!

Patrick AFB Wing supports 4th Mobile User Objective System satellite launch by 45th Space Wing Public Affairs

The U.S. Air Force’s 45th Space Wing helped successfully launch the fourth Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Launch Complex 40, at 6:18 a.m. EDT, Sept. 2, 2015. “Here at the 45th we measure success one launch at a time,” said Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, 45th SW commander. “With this being my first launch as the 45th SW Commander, I can tell you the road to achieving that success is no small task. It takes a blended team of military, civilian and contracted professionals driving toward the same objective of getting that rocket into space. I am proud of the hard work our team put into today’s launch and it goes

without saying that there’s nothing more exciting than being a part of a team that provides assured access to space... that’s our charge. We did it today, we’ll do it tomorrow and there’s nothing quite like it. Great work team.” The U.S. Navy-delivered MUOS is a next-generation narrowband tactical satellite communications system, built by Lockheed Martin, designed to significantly improve ground communications for U.S. forces on the move. system will undergo Multiservice Operational Test and Evaluation beginning this December and will achieve Full Operational Capability in 2017. According to the U.S. Navy’s Communications Satellite Program Office, MUOS works like a smartphone network in space, vastly improving secure satellite communications for mobile U.S. forces. MUOS provides users a global, on-demand, beyond-line-of-sight capability to transmit and receive high-quality voice and mission data on a high-speed Internet Protocol-based system. “Delivery of this fourth satellite for the U.S. Navy completes the initial MUOS constellation and provides near-global coverage for the network,” said Iris Bombelyn, vice president of Narrowband Communications at Lockheed Martin. “For our mobile forces, that means for the first time they will be able to have secure, high-fidelity voice conversations, networked team calls and data exchange, including video, with anyone around the world connected with a MUOS terminal.” MUOS is supported by the Army’s Project Manager for Tactical Radios. According to the U.S. Army, MUOS will use

Earth-orbiting satellites as the equivalent of cell phone towers in space and will connect U.S. forces on ships, in submarines, aircraft, and vehicles. It provides the vital link between troops in advanced positions or remote areas and the rest of the Department of Defense military global network. Prior to the successful launch of MUOS-4, the 45th SW supported the MUOS1, MUOS-2 and MUOS-3 launch respectively in 2012,

2013 and 2015 from Cape Canaveral Air Station, Fla. Eastern Range instrumentation provides radar tracking, telemetry, communications, command/control sites, camera and optical sites, and other support capabilities such as meteorology. Instrumentation is necessary to safely and successfully conduct civil, commercial, and national security spacelift operations and ballistic missile tests and evaluation. Eastern Range assets are based

on dependable designs and technology and are arrayed in a highly efficient architecture designed to ensure safety of the launch environment and the public at large.

AQUARIUS This month brings a beautiful energy. You feel a bit lighter because Pluto is now direct. The energy this month is going to be great for money and those still in school. Also Venus moves into Virgo, putting an emphasis on your love relationships. This can create a deeper connection and understanding with your partner.

Black Mass Director: Scott Cooper

Stars: Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch

The Movies by Matthew Phillips • facebook.com/mattbillups

Everest

Director: Baltasar Kormakur

Stars: Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes Standing at 29,000 ft., Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. Based on Jon Krakauer’s book “Into Thin Air”, “Everest” recounts the story of the 34 climbers who dared to climb Everest in 1996. With supporting actors such as Sam Worthington and Jake Gyllenhaal the cast is all-star but because there are so many characters, there isn’t any real narrative. There are glimpses into some of the characters’ lives but nothing worth making an investment. With the exception of Clarke, it’s hard to sympathize for anyone. Even with their color-coordinated attire, it’s hard to distinguish who is who. You only see them as the actors instead of characters. The movie plays out much like a documentary explaining the history, location, and climbing precautions of Everest. Luckily, a snow storm arrives halfway into the movie bringing with it

some much-needed drama and suspense. With bad weather, gear malfunctions and injuries, the climbers are struggling for survival. And quicker than an avalanche, the movie goes from character observation to an incredibly emotional experience (like the end of “Titanic” emotional). “Everest” doesn’t have the action or suspense one might expect but it does provide a fair account of real life events. Grade: B

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Director: Wes Ball

Stars: O’Shea Jackson Jr, Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins Thomas (O’Brien) and the rest of the Maze survivors have reached safety. When it’s revealed that the people protecting them work for W.C.K.D (World Catastrophe Kill Department), the group flees into the surrounding desert known as “The Scorch.” Stuck between a rock and a hard place, the teens seek out a group of rebels.

“Scorch Trials” uses the same entertaining formula as before with unexpected surprises and cleverly conceived plot devices. While still emphasizing brotherhood and loyalty, the established characters have little development as it’s saved for the film’s new faces. The characters will have audiences rooting for some while hating others. Unlike other young adult franchises, “Maze Runner” is able to center the story on teenagers dealing with adult themes and situations without forcing it. The first film established that the people inside the maze were unique and important and the sequel explains why. Whether they are running from zombie-like creatures or experiencing inebriation, some of the scenes are quite impressive. “Maze Runner” is entertaining until the story becomes the rebels fighting back against the system. With “Divergent” and “Hunger Games” still fresh, it feels all too familiar. Grade: A-

James “Whitey” Bulger (Depp) was the most notorious gangster in south Boston and for a time, the most wanted criminal in US history. If that doesn’t make for an interesting story already, he also worked as an FBI informant through a childhood friend (Edgerton). Depp steps out of his “whimsical character” comfort zone to get serious for another dramatic biopic. Like Cooper’s previous film, “Out of the Furnace,” the film displays fine acting but crawls along at a slow pace. With Bulger becoming an informant early in the film, the rest of the plot undergoes a repetitive cycle. Bulger casually committing acts of violence and Edgerton struggling to cover his tracks. The biggest problem with “Black Mass” is the absence of a protagonist. Except for an FBI agent late in the film, everyone is a bad guy. Depp is the central character and Edgerton is a cop, but there’s nobody to sympathize with. “Black Mass” is well acted but is essentially a less exciting version of another movie based on the same events“The Departed.” Grade: B-

Inquire of Juliet By Juliet Pomodoro

Dear Juliet,

I was not blessed to wield a generous sword. Instead, I conceal a teeny dagger behind my fly. I dread the moment of the evening when I unsheathe it, and the disappointed look I worry I’ll get. I already drive a flashy sports car very aggressively. How else can I make up for my shortcomings?

“Jeffrey” Merritt Island

Juliet, My lover’s member has a distinctive kink. It bends the wrong way! What am I to do? “Leslie” Indialantic Dolce Leslie, who ever said there was anything wrong with kink? Depending on how you move, it could be bent the oh-so-right way! You simply must adjust to the extreme angle of his dangle.

submissive sexcapades. Someone who is good with commands, as well as with her hands. Perhaps someone who knows her way around a riding crop. Perhaps someone who is good at giving advice... Call me. Per fervore.

Juliet,

I love to watch my husband do sexy things. The only problem is, I’m not very motivated when I’m actually in the bedroom. How do I get in the game?

Juliet,

“Tina” Cape Canaveral

My wife and I enjoy an adventurous love life. There’s just one problem: We both like to be dominated. How can we both stay satisfied when we want to play the same role?

Oh, you sneaky little spectator! You’ve simply got to sack your quarterback once in awhile! If you are unwilling, then you must find an exhibitionist to complement your voyeuristic habits. Then you can cheer her on while she receives your husband’s pass! You know, players always say that the crowd makes the game. Ciao!

“Mike” Palm Bay Mi formaggino, if everyone is queuing up for spankings, save me a spot in line! Perhaps you and your betrothed should invite a third party into your

Mio Dio, you have the wit and wisdom of a box of rocks. Why must some men insist on referring to their love rod as a weapon? If you focused less on your shiny sports car and your tiny switchblade, you would find that there are myriad ways to please the woman you love without plunging your dagger quite so deep! Most women prefer not a long shiny saber, but a Swiss army knife. It’s compact, versatile, and can get any job done. So Jeffy, darling, take your foot off the accelerator, slow down, and explore your many moving parts.

Juliet,

From my father’s side, I inherited a skill for baking. From my mother’s side, I got two generous loaves of high rising bread. 38 triple J, to be exact! There’s a cute customer who’s been coming in to my bakery more and more frequently and I can’t tell if she loves my baked goods or my chest! I’d be happy to share both with her, but how can I know for sure?

“Jeni” Cocoa Beach Does this customer work in a field that requires your services frequently, such as wedding planning? Or does she seem to be finding excuses to come in to see you, one cupcake at a time? My feeling is, she wants to sample your cakes, cioccolatino. Invite her to your workspace for some after hours kneading and see if she bites.
