together the young professionals in a county where the median age is 46.9. The Office of Alumni Affairs at FIT maintains a social connection with their students and alumni, and culminates each year with Homecoming Week in October. Of course, one of the best ways to be social is by throwing or going to a party. FIT throws one of the biggest and best in Brevard with their Homecoming Fest, this year featuring none other than Wyclef Jean! With Halloween coming up, we also wanted to keep people in the know about how to have a good time while in costume. So definitely check out our feature on various pub crawls in the area! Having charisma and social skills may not be everything, but they definitely give people and groups a leg up. Maybe this issue will inspire you to be a little more social yourself. Join that club, play an intramural sport, enjoy a night on the town! After all, you’ll never know who you’ll meet, and what impact they may have on you in the long run.

I’m a people person. For as long as I can remember, my family has told me that I’m a social butterfly and that I have “the gift of gab.” I pride myself on being able to connect with all sorts of people. Ultimately, I think my social skills more than anything have helped me find my place in the world. I’ve worked at courthouses and carnivals, as a waitress and as a wedding planner. Every single environment has been so different, and has introduced me to so many different types of people. From each interaction, I have gleaned insights and experiences that comprise the person I am today. At The Beachside Resident, everything we do is social. Be it on a personal, business, or community level, we are constantly interacting with others. Our goal is to tell people’s stories, especially those which we think will have a positive impact on our readership. For October’s issue, we wanted to highlight some local organizations where being social is integral to their overall success. The Cocoa Beach Kiwanis Club is just one of many groups who depend on relaying messages and bringing people together to help our youth. 321 Millennials is an up-and-coming organization that helps bring OCT 2016

Recipe ofthe Month

From the Boardroom to the Green Room,

By Samantha Deebel

October Oysters Oysters are in season! I’ve already shared recipes for my Aunt Cathy’s delicious oyster stuffing as well as my recipe for oyster stew. So, this time, I’m going to share some easy recipes from my grandmother. She lived in Riva, Maryland, right on the Chesapeake Bay. Her house is still there among the dogwood trees, and I can still smell the oysters cooking… enjoy!

Maryland Pan-Fried Oysters 1½ pints shucked oysters 2 eggs, beaten 2 tablespoons of milk Pinch of salt 2 pinches of black pepper 1½ cups dried bread crumbs 1½ cups all-purpose flour Oil for frying (I like coconut.) Drain oysters. Mix eggs, milk, salt, and pepper. You can substitute Old Bay seasoning for salt and pepper if you prefer. In a separate bowl, mix the breadcrumbs and flour. Roll oysters in crumb mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, then back again in the crumb mixture. Fry in hot oil over medium heat until brown on one side, then turn gently to brown the other side. This takes about five minutes. Drain on paper towels before serving. These are great for Po’ Boy sandwiches!

O CTO B E R 2016

Being from Indiana, I had little knowledge of the ocean. To get better educated about Marine Biology, I went to Florida Institute of Technology to pick the brains of some of their faculty. I was very lucky to meet Captain Rich Gurlek who ran the FIT research vessel, Delphinus. Captain Gurlek invited me to bring small groups of students to go out with him to do samplings in the Indian River Lagoon. Over the next several years, we pulled trawl nets to sample swimming organisms, and a plankton net to examine small and microscopic organisms. We conducted bottom sampling with a grab sampler. We also tested the water chemistry for salinity, nitrogen, oxygen, and phosphorus. Way back in 1971, Captain Gurlek told us the Indian River Lagoon was dying. Even though it is the most biodiverse ecosystem in the Northern Hemisphere, it was losing much of its biomass due to preventable human activity. Laws have been passed, and ordinances have been enacted, but they

don’t seem to be solving the problem. So what the heck is going on? One of the biggest problems is population growth. With more people, we have more lawns, roads, parking lots, roofs and other surfaces that don’t let storm water soak into the ground. A lot of that water runs into storm drains that go directly into the lagoon along with all of the road pollution it picks up along the way. Another major source of pollution is nutrients from fertilizers that people put on their lawns. Most commercial lawn care services follow local ordinances, but private homeowners who apply fertilizers may not be aware of them. Grass clippings which contain some of the fertilizers and pesticides used on lawns should not be left in gutters where they can end up in the lagoon. My neighbor’s lawn service blew the clippings into the street, and they ended up in my gutter. Of course, I swept them up and put them in my backyard compost pile.

What is killing the Indian River Lagoon? We are! The excess nutrients cause algae blooms that end up depleting the IRL water of oxygen leading to massive die-offs of mullet, stingrays, horseshoe crabs, sheepshead, and flounder. According to Tonya Morgan and Michelle Spahn of Wildside Tours, “Everything is being impacted by what’s going on here in the lagoon.” The solutions are not easy. Major construction like that on Minutemen Causeway in downtown Cocoa Beach will help with the road runoff. That can be a very expensive process for the entire Indian River Lagoon system. We need to become much more aware of how our actions around our homes affect the lagoon. Use as little fertilizer as possible. Maybe even none! Grow plants that are meant to grow in our climate. Reduce watering lawns. Maybe even stop watering! Research for yourself and grow a lagoon-friendly yard. Do we want green grass and a dead lagoon? It’s time to prioritize.

When it All Lines Up

With October comes the promise we’ve suffered through the long, devilish summer for- the promise of that two-hour session. That magical, impossible window when swell, tide, wind, hour, and sandbar all meet in perfect synchrony. When the Atlantic cuts its best impression of a Pacific reef break, and when we are struck, inevitably, once again, with the revelation that Cocoa Beach is the best place in the world to live. Until then, what else is there to do but wait, work, watch sand, and entertain ourselves accordingly?

Women of the Waves The biggest event of our best surf month is the Women of the Waves weekend, which opens on Friday, October 7, with a free surf movie, “Sisterhood of Surfing” by Diana Wehrell-Grabowski. Doors open at 6:30pm at the Cocoa Beach Library. The movie starts at 7:30. Arrive early, or grab a seat on the floor. Sunseed Co-Op will provide refreshments. On Saturday, October 8, the women and the girls will convene at Lori Wilson Park (the south parking entrance). The schedule:

8:30am - Welcome the Sun with “Gentle Yoga-Sun Salutations” with Yumi Ishizuka from Infinity Yoga and Wellness 9-10:45am - Florida Women of the Waves Surfing Social 11am - Women of the Waves picture and paddle out

The Potluck Barbecue is on Saturday night at Manatee Sanctuary Park Pavilion in Cape Canaveral. Admission is $5. Bring a covered dish. BYOB. This event is open to everyone. For more info on WOW, contact Melody at (321) 537-2045.

Hobgood: The Exhibit

The opening of the Hobgood gallery was a tremendous success. The Cocoa Beach High School surf team showed up early, Kenny Cohen played the songs, CJ and Damien signed autographs and took pictures, and everyone from Jim Leasure to Debbie Harvey to Buddy Favor to Bruce Ragan came to check it all out. Tony Sasso, a longtime museum board member, was blown away by the installations and videos and wants to return to the museum at some quiet time while the exhibit is still on display. “It was a wonderful crowd,” Sasso said. “A younger crowd than what we normally see. Matt Bellina did a great job of bringing this thing together. The videos were really cool, some of the ESM shots, and the Hobgoods, I tell you what... star quality or just neighbors, these are just two really nice young men.” continued on pg. 40 O CTO B E R 2016

RESIDENTS of the

MONTH

By Nataleigh Palmer

COCOA BEACH

Kiwanis Club

Cocoa Beach resident and incoming President of Kiwanis Bill Geiger likes to joke, “Our work is selling beer and parking cars, but of course not at the same time.” Geiger has been a Kiwanis Club member since the 80s when he joined to make business contacts. Not strictly a business club, Kiwanis is a civic organization focused on supporting underprivileged children and their families. They also pay for necessary equipment or tools children need to thrive. The club has no restrictions on membership and is open to anyone interested in getting more involved in the community. “Our criteria for a member is if the check clears. That’s a joke. But we make that joke every time. We’re looking for people who want to join and help kids.”

A Rich History The Cocoa Beach Kiwanis Club is one of the oldest civic organizations in town. Their history can trace back over sixty years. “We’ve had a lot of movers and shakers in our club.” Many prominent business people are active members, including two city commissioners, a candidate for mayor and the publisher of The Beachside Resident. “We end up attracting a lot of political people, but we don’t discuss politics other than what’s going on with the causeway. No bickering or political talk. Really, we’re always looking for members who are interested in doing the work, and for us the work is fun.” The club meets every

18

Thursday at noon at Roberto’s Little Havana Cuban Restaurant.

Educational Endowments The Kiwanis are always on the lookout for worthy investments in children’s education. “We recently bought $20,000 worth of iPad equipment for Roosevelt Elementary. It’s a portable cart that transports the equipment into classrooms for the whole school to share.” The Kiwanis Club also supports the school’s Odyssey of the Mind competition expenses. Odyssey of the Mind is an international program that presents students with real-world problems and provides them the opportunity to use their creativity to find solutions. Students can compete at local, state and international levels. “The kids are presented a problem. They have to create a device or structure, and parents aren’t allowed to participate. They have to explain their solution. Once they built a bridge out of popsicle sticks and whichever one held the most weight won. It’s a great program that encourages kids to think on their own.”

Sports Endowments The Kiwanis Club is a big supporter of

school athletics and extracurricular activities. Through their beer sales and event parking fundraisers, the club has funded much of the sports and recreational equipment in Cocoa Beach. “We always support football, Little League, and band. For the high school football team, we help pay for the uniforms. I think a lot of people would be surprised how many things the school board no longer pays for, such as playgrounds and equipment. That means that the community has to step in and raise money. About 10 or 12 years ago, we rebuilt the playground with funds we raised, but now it’s time now to rebuild again.” Geiger looked forward to the dedication of the Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School’s new scoreboard. The Kiwanis, Grills, both local Rotary Clubs, and Ace Hardware donated the majority of the funds. “Ours was the largest single club donation in the city. Tonight they’re turning it on for the first time. Not bad for parking cars and selling beers.”

Golf N Gator Fundraiser The club hosts two major fundraisers a year. They are in the midst of planning a costumed event to be held at Golf N Gator in Cape

Canaveral around Halloween. Tickets for the fundraiser will be available to the public soon. Golf N Gator will be closed to the public during the event. “We get local restaurants to donate food, and the bars donate alcohol. We had 75 or 80 people last year at $20 a pop. You get your money’s worth.” This fundraiser along with event parking and Friday Fest beer sales fund support to underprivileged children and families. Every year the Kiwanis Club provides Thanksgiving dinner and gift cards at Christmas for 10 local families in need. They fund $1,000 college scholarships every year for up to seven recipients. They’ve made donations to the Brevard Sharing Center’s Children’s Bag Pack Feeding program. No matter what the need, the Kiwanis Club is always eager to be of service. “One of our biggest challenges is identifying a need... We’re always looking for someone who needs our help.”

The Cocoa Beach Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday at noon at Roberto’s Little Havana Restaurant at 25 North Orlando Avenue, Cocoa Beach. For more information call incoming President Bill Geiger at (321) 698-7412.

321 Millennials (321 M) is a group of young business-minded professionals with strong community ties, a voice, and a place to build friendships-- while not taking themselves too seriously.

By Nataleigh Palmer

321 M’s Membership Outreach Coordinator and social media enthusiast, Eric Parent, has gained more than just business contacts through his involvement. “I’ve met my best friends through the group. You do business with your friends. It’s just a natural thing to gather with like-minded folks.”

“The purpose of 321M was more than just passing business cards. We were looking to build relationships with other young professionals in the community” -Gary Neal 321 M’S BEGINNINGS

After a career in the Navy, 321 M’s founder Shane Burgman was unable to find a community organization that jived with his personality and interests. Burgman had been a community service liaison during his time in the Navy. “I created connections. I organized our quarterly beach cleanups. We worked with the Hacienda Girl’s Ranch whose umbrella is the Children’s Home Society; we did a lot with them. I was the contact for all these organizations.” After transitioning out of his job and passing his duties to another sailor, he felt conflicted. “I thought, that’s it? I don’t help them anymore? It didn’t feel right to me.” Over drinks with a friend, 321 Millennials was born. Burgman and former board member Russell Wood brainstormed about potential members and asked Akaila Amara and Gary Neal to join. Burgman first sought to crystalize the group’s goals through a motto. “Growth, Influence, Prosperity were the first guidelines,” Bergman explained. “We were trying to encapsulate everything we wanted to do in just three words. As a big Star Trek fan, I thought ‘live long and prosper.’“

EVENT STRUCTURE The group holds three types of events. Business or “Biz” meetings are conducted once a month. The Biz meetings are structured to provide time to socialize as well as to discuss important issues. Most recently they voted on 321’s position regarding mural ordinances. They also do one charitable or community event each month called Socially Thriving. September’s event was the “What the Hell is Bridges?” fundraiser. Parent explained the unorthodox naming of the event. “We put a fun spin on it,” he said. “At first, it seemed a little edgy. But we looked into it, and none of us knew. What the hell is Bridges? I think that’s what makes us more real and down-to-earth. We speak our mind, and that’s how we talk in real life.” Bridges is a Brevard-based nonprofit providing resources to people with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. 321M raised over $400 for Bridges during their Socially Thriving event. Socially Thriving events unite members while educating and engaging them in political and local issues or charities. Strictly social events dot the schedule as well, such as a Halloween pub crawl on October 28. It will be an opportunity for the hard-working millennials to don a costume and have some fun.

MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS PRIVILEGES Currently, 321 M takes applications via their website for all prospective business members. Annual membership fees fund the group’s costs. However, potential members needn’t be afraid of the commitment. Prior to becoming a full-fledged member, you can attend two business (Biz) meetings. There is an interview process for prospective business members. All of their events are open

to the public, including community events, quarterly beach clean-ups, Socially Thriving and other types of socials. Although 321 M represents a younger voice, they also have other generations present within their group. A quick scan of their social media shows people of all ages attending their events. Industry caps for membership at two millennials and one non-millennial per industry. Amara explained, “Active members benefit by providing a voice to the charity they represent. We’ll help either through our time or publicity on Facebook and share it within our network.” Neal noted, “Our network is a way to recruit members. That’s one of the perks. You’ll have a group of 30 or 40 people who will back your organization up.”

A VOICE 321 M felt there wasn’t an organized voice representing young business people, and they wanted to lend their collective voice to a cause. The recent mural debate in downtown Melbourne has become a focus for the group. Chez Quan Takeout is a Thai-Latin restaurant that removed their graffiti mural due to Melbourne’s mural ordinance. Chez Quan’s co-owner Adam Woodworth wants to broaden the rules and encourage art in Brevard. Parent created a Biz Spotlight video on the Chez Quan’s Takeout mural. “I made a video. I do the social media thing. Graffiti really fits the [Chez Quan] brand and I think that’s important to note. He has that kind of hip-hop brand to his restaurant.” 321 M conducted a survey during one of its last Biz meetings. The results discovered 321 M members favor murals to be citywide, cover 100% of walls, and unlimited in text size. A majority of survey participants also believe that a review of the murals design prior to painting is necessary. Local organizations have taken notice of 321 M as a resource as well. 321 M will collaborate with the Brevard Economic Development Commission (EDC) to share young professionals’ perspectives and attract new talent. The EDC is still in the planning phase of this partnership, but will participate in a yet-to-be-scheduled Socially Thrive event. They envision conducting a live Facebook survey utilizing technology to identify attributes of the Space Coast that young, highly-skilled workers are seeking, and how to keep them here. Burgman’s ultimate goal is to build a network of dedicated people. He’s already looking toward the future and growing the club to have multiple locations throughout Brevard. Parent added, “We’re looking for people who want to have selfless relationships with the community and put Brevard County and their town first. That’s our jam. If there’s a problem that we’re passionate about, let’s go be heard. And like our charity events, instead of just talking about it, we just do it.”

321 Millennials is a group of young professionals concerned about the future of our community. For more information, visit 321millennials.com and follow them on Facebook. Join them at their next social on October 28 at 8pm in Downtown Melbourne for a pub crawl starting at the Iron Oak Post. O CTO B E R 2016

FIT Homecoming By Rachel Bilchak

2016

“Ad Astra Per Scientiam: To the Stars Through Science.” It is often said that the years spent in college are some of the best times in a person’s life. Career paths start to take shape, challenges are faced, and bonds are forged that can have an impact for a lifetime. Alumni organizations exist to help foster the relationship a person has with their university long beyond graduation. At the Florida Institute of Technology, the Alumni Association works tirelessly to “promote a lifelong relationship of mutual benefits and assistance to both the university and its alumni.” Theirs is a year-round mission, and the FIT Homecoming events that take place each fall are the pinnacle of their efforts. Between October 12-15, a variety of events celebrating FIT and its alumni will take place both on and off campus. While certain functions pertain specifically to alumni, large-scale events such as the FIT Homecoming 5K and the Homecoming Fest featuring multiple award-winning artist Wyclef Jean are open to the community. Here, The Beachside Resident talks with Bino Campanini, Vice President of FIT’s Office of Alumni Affairs and Executive Director of the Alumni Association. He gives us insight on the Association’s goals for Homecoming Week, and why the 2016 event will be one of the most meaningful to date.

achieve success, we work with various departments on campus, individuals and companies from the business sector, and local government as well. A special mention needs to be made about our FIT Homecoming Fest partners, Melbourne Main Street and Deuterman Productions. Together they have helped us present four hugely successful Fests in Downtown Melbourne that have attracted upwards of 40,000 people.

Let’s start off by discussing your team at the Office of Alumni Affairs. Can you give us an idea of what it takes for them to make Homecoming Week a success?

The 2016 Fest will be particularly poignant because it will honor the memory of Fidgi Haig, FIT’s women’s soccer coach who passed away unexpectedly in April 2015. For those who don’t know, please give a brief overview of his history and role at FIT and in the community.

We have a small staff of three, so putting together an event with as many moving parts as Homecoming Week requires us to partner with organizations and individuals on a year-round basis. [This is] to plan and coordinate our four distinct events: FIT’s Homecoming Fest, the Homecoming 5K, the Homecoming Gala, and the Homecoming Awards Reception. Each event involves fundraising, marketing, promotion, communications, community outreach, and significant logistics. To

What are some of the reasons you make Homecoming events so community-oriented rather than solely for students and alumni? Obviously, our number one focus is our alumni and students (who are our future alumni). They represent Florida Tech’s past, present, and future. Our goal is to connect our alumni back to their alma mater while connecting the students with the alumni. There is no better way to do this than during Homecoming Week. But beyond that, we are also an integral part of the community. Florida Tech is Melbourne’s university, and we feel it is important for us the reach out into the community and to include them in our Homecoming. We also want to say thank you for all the support that we receive from our great community here in Brevard, and there is no better way than hosting a free concert in Downtown Melbourne.

Fidgi joined the men’s soccer team from Haiti as a freshman in 1987. He helped the Panthers win their first-ever NCAA National Championship in 1998. After graduating from Florida Tech, he was instrumental in growing and developing girls soccer throughout Brevard County. From coaching at various clubs, including Space Coast United, he helped young girls develop a passion for the game. At Satellite High School he led the

Scorpions to multiple State Championships. Finally, he returned to Florida Tech where he started the women’s soccer program and led them to an NCAA Final Four appearance. At the time of his passing, he was one of the top women’s soccer coaches in the nation and was involved with elite coaching on both the state and national level. Several of his players went on to play professionally and for the U.S. Women’s National Team. He was inducted into the Florida Tech Athletic Hall of Fame as well as the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame.

his own to sing a tribute at Fidgi’s funeral service. He did so because he wanted to pay his respects to a great humanitarian and a brother. It was from this visit that discussions began about him appearing at FIT Homecoming Fest and making it part of a tribute to our friend.

Here is where we can segue to this year’s headlining event- Wyclef Jean, who was a friend of Fidgi’s via their home country of Haiti. Please share with our readers why Wyclef ’s performance here will have a personal component.

Many music aficionados call him the man behind the music. Wyclef has many musicians featured in his music, like Mary J. Blige, Akon, Lil Wayne, Paul Simon and Santana. Destiny’s Child, Gloria Estefan, Shakira, T.I., The Black Eyed Peas and Snoop Dogg all featured Wyclef. The beautiful thing is he plans to start in the time of The Fugees, 1996, and finish in 2016. He is going to be taking the fans on what he calls “the whirlwind of the carnival.”

Fidgi knew Wyclef through work they were both doing in Haiti. Fidgi had a long history of helping young children get soccer supplies and other goods so they could enjoy the beautiful game. After the loss of his father in the Haitian earthquake disaster, Fidgi stepped up his involvement. When Fidgi passed away so unexpectedly, Wyclef dropped what he was doing and flew down to Melbourne on

Wyclef is a Grammy-winning artist with a career that has spanned decades. Furthermore, this fall he’ll be dropping “Carnival III: Road To Clefication,” his first album in seven years. What type of show can fans expect to see on October 14?

Piertoberfest at the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier

While Florida may not have vibrant red, yellow, and orange foliage to signify the turning of the seasons, there’s still a change in the air. The weather is getting a little more crisp, and the melting sensation you get as soon as you step outside is diminishing (somewhat, at least). Other telltale signs of autumn’s onset include pumpkins on porches, longer sleeves, and a host of outdoor activities for the public. With fall comes festivals, and the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier has decided to join the party. Throughout the entire month of October, they’ll be hosting Piertober Fest on weekends. This means that you’ll have five opportunities to get in touch with your inner Bavarian. So, what is entailed in the Pier’s version of Oktoberfest? In addition to all the stellar views and activities regularly offered, Keith’s Oyster Bar will be transformed into the Pier Garden. There will be live German music, plenty of Beck’s and other German beers on tap, and a special menu for the month. Guests can also purchase custom beer steins for $15 with discounted refills.

• Soft Bavarian Pretzels

• German Potato Salad • Braised Red Cabbage with Apples and Bacon • Crispy Chicken • Hot Pastrami on Pretzel Roll with Cheese • Bier & Bratwurst on Pretzel Roll With the weather cooling down, it’s the perfect time to spend even more time outside and drink quality beer. Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier encourages outdoor entertainment year-round, but this October, it’ll be with some Germain flair- prost to that!

Hell ‘n Blazes Brewing Company is a historical red brick treasure nestled in beautiful Downtown Melbourne. The brewing company’s rich history began in 1898 when the building was a bank, monetary, and hardware store- all wrapped in one. “It was the Wal-Mart Super Center of their time,” joked Andy Pinkerton, tour guide and general manager. Andy is a gifted storyteller, historian, and carpenter. He and his family did much of the restoration and demo, and served as general contractors. Andy’s uncle, owner Don DiFrisco, wanted the brewery to be a family business. Hell ‘n Blaze’s brewmaster is Todd Furbeck, and their brewer is Don’s son, Jimmy DiFrisco. The brewery’s business operations are overseen by another of Don’s three sons, Jonathan DiFrisco. A working brewery is housed onsite toward the center of the building. They utilize an oversized 10 barrel system. “We have 14 beers on tap. It fluctuates to the lowest at 10 or 11 and as high as 15 or 16,” Andy explained. His favorite is the German Chocolate Cake Porter, a bold dessert treat. They’re currently aging his soon-to-be favorite, Chocolate Cherry Stout. “That’ll be our first addition in our series of

aged specialty recycled bourbon barrels, so we’re excited. It should take between two and five months. We keep tasting it all the way to find out how much bourbon is actually part of the flavor. It’s very hard to put an exact time frame or how long it’ll take. We should be able to release 600 bottles to the public when we’re done.”

The Vault

The Vault is a private 500-plus square foot farm-style nook located directly behind the taproom. Available for parties and business meetings, it’s the perfect place to get away from the crowd. Pine floors, leather couches, and artwork provide a time warp feel. Cowhide covered chairs encircle a rustic slat dining table perfect for party snacks. The 70-inch television is always ready to catch the game. The Vault room’s back corner contains a real circa 1910 bank vault that inspired the room’s nickname. C.H. Stewart Banking owned the vault that once protected much of Melbourne’s hard-earned cash so many years ago. “It’s still fully functional. It’s been here since the early days of Melbourne and probably one of the only safe places to stack cash. C.H. Stewart Banking was located in the Fee and Stewart Hardware building, owned by Charles H. Stewart and Frank Fee. Stewart and Fee Avenues were named after both these early Melbourne pioneers,” Andy shared.

The Mortuary

The Depression signaled the end of the banking era, but they continued the hardware business. The partners sold the mortuary services

“If you’re ever gonna pick out a building in Melbourne to be haunted, this is probably a prime target.” -Andy Pinkerton

to what is now Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home. It operated out of the back of their building from 1915 to 1934 before moving to their current location. “We think that this section was the mortuary, it would make the most sense because it faces the back alley. It’s very close to the ice plant, and they would bring the ice here through the back door.” Some of their findings during reconstruction helped fill in some of the information gaps. “We did some demo and found a pegboard. Hand drawn lines where they would put their tools back encircled the pegboard. They were the outlines of traditional mortician tools. We found tools in the crawlspace, and embalming fluid as well.”

Paranormal Sightings

Andy and Don encountered a few strange sightings while working on the rebuild. Andy explained a few of their hair-raising experiences. “Little things, we had actual physical extension cords move around, motion detection lights coming on when there’s no one there.” They also have had some official confirmation. The Brevard Paranormal Society investigated and verified their building as haunted. Recently, they had another independent confirmation from a medium as well. “The lady was here just having a beer. She said she was a medium and had just had a brief chat in the ladies’ room with a spirit who still harbors in the building. She said she was a very sad older woman named Mabel.” The family thinks the spirit may be Charles Stewart’s wife, Mabel. Mabel was a legendary town character who used to play the piano out of the front windows to the delight of her neighbors. “She was a big star in the area, and we’re told that Charles and Mabel are still spirits that inhabit this building,” Andy said. Hell ‘n Blazes is a timeless place to enjoy a craft beer while relishing a Melbourne

landmark. It also offers a game room, a wine list with 25 options and is dog-friendly. Don’t forget to check out the cartoon timeline wall that traces the building’s evolution throughout the years. While you’re there, take note of their beautifully decorated bathrooms. And ladies, make sure to say hello to Mabel when you visit.

Hell ‘n Blazes Brewing Company is at 1002 E. New Haven Avenue in Melbourne. If you’d like to plan a party in the Vault call 321-821-4052. The ART Side By Kelsie Sandage

Heather Clark A SLEEPING SIREN

Heather Clark was born and raised in Brevard county. Her love for art started at an early age. “I was the first kid to start our ‘art club’ in my elementary school, and it just kept up from there.” She has always had a taste for the unusual, and it’s reflected in her art. Her latest project is Sleeping Sirens, an oddities and taxidermy business she runs with her partner Sarah Buckman. Heather and Sarah were neighbors who became close friends over a shared love of the weird and strange. “[Sarah] has crazy, awesome Halloween parties,” stated Heather over drinks when we met to discuss the Sleeping Sirens, and how their curiosities turned into a brand.

My interest in taxidermy started with bones, and then wet specimens. Eventually, I was working with the whole animal. Death is a part of life. I take what’s left in this world to make it beautiful, and forever preserve the memory and dignity of the wildlife we have here.

“Sleeping Sirens, makers of oddities, taxidermy, and other spooky finery.” Please describe the inspiration for the aesthetic of Sleeping Sirens.

Having done this for a while now, a ton of our followers just kind of know what we do. Friends and relatives bring us finds such as bones or roadkill. We hunt for a lot of it ourselves. If an animal comes our way for taxidermy, nothing gets left unused. The organs are preserved as wet specimens, the bones are cleaned for art or re-articulation, and the hide or skin is now skillfully turned into a taxidermy mount.

About three years ago, I began my dive into the oddity sales world with bones. Shortly after that, Sarah made me a set of “petrified fairies” for Christmas. After some serious convincing on my part, Sarah started working with me to shape what Sleeping Sirens has become today. How did the brand begin? After working for several months, the brand began to develop into this cool subculture of oddity collectors and horror appreciators. We do such a range of strange things, and we made a brand that a lot of people really stand behind. We both distribute work equally, pushing our business to continue to be a success. How did your interest in taxidermy begin?

Where did you learn your skills? I’ve collected skills and techniques along the way from trial and error, and from more experienced taxidermists. I continue to learn under an amazing and talented instructor, Brenda Lindsey. Sleeping Sirens uses authentic materials for quality pieces. How do you decide on materials for your creations?

Of all the products available, which Siren creates what? Sarah and I work on pieces individually. She works on a lot of the gaff taxidermy, petrified fairies, and many of the pop culture items. Her most famous piece is the Fiji mermaid. I work with real specimens from start to finish. The wet specimens, tooth jewelry, bone jewelry, antler wreaths, apothecary items, and taxidermy items are what I do.

You also have the Belladonna Bath & Beauty product line. How did this line of scents, candles, and soaps begin? Belladonna spawned from the need for a counterculture brand of fragrances. We blend all of our own scents; this is something Sarah and I work on together. “Nevermore” is the most popular. “Brick and Mortar” is like your favorite bookstore. It’s rich... more of a fall scent. “Wicked Garden” has an earthy tone. “Calypso” is light and sweet. “Jack the Ripper,” our male scent, is like a sexy lumberjack. Besides the online store, how can people purchase your work? This is our busiest time of year! We set up shops as vendors at events almost every weekend. Our big shows coming up include Spooky Empire in Orlando from October 7-9, the Rockledge Gardens Fall Festival on October 22, and a few more over the Halloween weekend. Find where we will be via social media and our website! Fingers crossed as we work overtime to get ourselves a brick and mortar storefront. That is the ultimate goal for us.

What about the Space Coast makes this a great place to be an artist? Everyone here is really supportive despite our business’s weird and creepy nature. It’s like a family here, and you’d be surprised how many people want a preserved brain floating in their living room. It’s neat stuff. How do you feel being a small business owner and artist in Brevard county? Being a small business owner here does have its challenges. Aside from a very supportive community, it is still difficult because our oddity subculture is much smaller [here] than other places. That’s why our online sales really carry us through non-holiday months.

Album Reviews

by M.A. Rivera

Brothers in Farms Steve ‘N’ Seagulls

Spinefarm Records, 2016

Sometimes a joke can get out of hand and take on a life of its own. Revolutions, 3am Vegas weddings, and the current U.S. political campaigns are proof of this. Once an idea is self-realized, it can be very hard to stop. Just watch any Terminator film if you have any doubts. Such is the case with Finland’s hillbilly sensation, Steve ‘N’ Seagulls. Their video rendition of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” went viral, and what was once a bit of whimsy is now on the stereo. This second full-length release is a great collection for those among you not wed to the sanctity of the original renditions. Some songs translate better than others. The strongest songs here have their own singular identity built in to deflect whatever might be thrown at them. GNR’s “November Rain” is improved by being stripped bare and shortened considerably. Megadeth’s “Symphony of Destruction” is remarkably solid. “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘N’ Roll)” is laconic and reflective. The main riff for Deep Purple’s “Burn” is a surprisingly good fit for an accordion to carry. “Out in the Fields” is an interesting choice and execution. Faster than the original; it’s frenetic and irresistible. Closing out the collection is the first cover of “Born To Be Wild” I’ve enjoyed in years. Light and flighty, the middle section is probably closer to what songwriter and unrepentant folkie Mars Bonfire originally had in mind when he penned the song so many years ago. This is a fascinating disc. Avoiding a lot of obvious missteps, SNS focused on great songs, impressive interpretations, and even pacing. Musically, this is hard to define. It’s not exactly folk, outlaw country, or bluegrass. It blurs the lines, with distinctive European touches in the vein of Gogol Bordello; all of it overlapping and intriguing. www.stevenseagulls.com

A Decade of Dio 1983-1993 Dio

Rhino, 2016 For such a diminutive man, Ronnie James Dio had an outsized voice and formidable presence. When he passed away in 2010, he left an impressive musical legacy which lasted four decades in front of Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven and Hell. Dio (the band) was lighter on its feet than Black Sabbath and more concise than Rainbow, and none of their contemporaries sounded like them. The first three albums, “Holy Diver,” “The Last in Line,” and “Sacred Heart” are an impressive audio trifecta. The songs are solid, memorable, and chock-full of imposing musicianship. Vivian Campbell’s guitar histrionics were everywhere. The fierce and energetic rhythm section of Vinny Appice (drums) and Jimmy Bain (bass) kept things moving along at a proper clip. The songs are topped off with powerful vocals singing about rainbows, Egypt, wizards, and epic quests. These three albums easily flow from one track to another, natural counterpoints. The following three albums saw lineup changes, and the overall cohesiveness of the band began to crack. All had strong moments, but with every album having a different guitarist, each had a starkly different feel. “Dream Evil” is the first full-length release with Craig Goldy on lead guitar. “Night People,” “Dream Evil,” and “Sunset Superman” are strong songs up front. “Evil on Queen Street” from “Lock up the Wolves” is a grandiose bit of theater, while “Walk on Water” is a burly, uptempo rocker. New guitarist Rowan Robertson brings impressive and imaginative leads. “Strange Highways” “Evilution” struts with considerable nerve. “Here’s to You” taps into a very real anger, the likes of which we haven’t really seen from RJD before. This collection is beautifully remastered and a fascinating window into this chapter of Dio’s career. The box set is available on CD and vinyl because Dio on vinyl is the natural order of things. www.ronniejamesdio.com

CRAFT BEER

What's on Tap by Ronnie Chabot

On Premise Craft Brand Manager

Shipyard Brewing Company is a family owned brewery – rooted in tradition and brimming with innovation. Our award-winning beer is handcrafted by our team of brewers who learned their art from world-renowned master brewer, Alan Pugsley. We are committed to cultivating a new generation of creative, passionate brewers. Our team is constantly exploring innovative and diverse styles of beer through our pilot system at our Portland brewery and our 7-barrel system at Federal Jack’s Brew Pub in Kennebunkport Harbor. Each year, we serve up more than 20 varieties of our award-winning, handcrafted beer and a full line of Capt’n Eli’s Soda. Our mission is simple: We’re committed to brewing the freshest, most flavorful, fullbodied ales available using only the finest, all natural ingredients. Excellence in Brewing The first Shipyard beer was brewed in 1992 at Federal Jack’s before we built our Portland brewery in 1994.

When entrepreneur Fred Forsley and master brewer Alan Pugsley started Federal Jack’s, the craft brew industry was just starting in Maine and Alan had recently moved here from England where he’d learned to brew under the legendary Peter Austin at the world-famous Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire. The launch of Federal Jack’s coincided with the birth of America's craft beer industry and by 1996 Shipyard was the fastest growing craft brewery in the country. Today, Shipyard is a vibrant centerpiece of the Portland waterfront and we continue to brew at Federal Jack’s in the heart of Kennebunk. The Shipyard logo is based on a schooner built on that very spot during the 1800s. Shipyard’s trademark is to produce balanced, drinkable beer with distinct character through the use of high quality raw materials and under the watchful eye of our talented brew team.

Boardrider ofthe Month By Jenny Bilchak

I don’t know any other event that has had waves that good in Cocoa Beach. Everyone who was there will remember that first year.” To keep a company and annual community event running year in and year out is not for the fainthearted. There’s no throwing in the towel, and going to sleep at night is never easy with a mind that works like that. I asked Crystal what gives her the strength and motivation to keep going. “My (late) parents are my strength, and my daughter, Emmy, is my motivation,” she explained. “My father stressed the importance of choosing a career that I love. I had to work a lot of jobs before I was able to focus solely on what I loved, but eventually, I did it. Now, I just couldn’t be more thankful for that guidance from him. My daughter Emmy (10) is what keeps me going day after day. I want to give her the best life possible. That is my priority, so it’s easy for me to work hard and focus when I have her counting on me.” Nothing this good can be done by one person alone. I wanted to know who Crystal’s go-to helpers are, and who deserved a shout-out to make this even possible. Crystal didn’t hold back. “The first hero that comes to mind is Ashley Howell, our contest director since day one. Ashley is someone I look up to on so many levels. She thinks of everything and works harder than anyPhoto by Jason Hook one I know. I’ve learned a lot from working with her. The event wouldn’t be what it is without her community with her enthusiasm for years, and endlessly pushing her brand to evolve into something bigger and bet- keeping it on point. Lance-O is someone who adds so much ter. I asked Crystal for some history about starting the Surf to the event, too. His positive vibes and genuine goodness are just perfect. We appreciate him being our commentator Fest in 2014. “I started surfing when I was 13 and entering contests every year. As for shout-outs, this year Lots of Honor Transaround 15,” she said. “It was frustrating to be constantly portation is hosting our contest. We couldn’t be more gratepushed to the background behind the men’s events. There ful to be working with such awesome people! Also, Long wasn’t nearly as many girls surfing events as there is now, Doggers has really stepped up this year to sponsor the Pro so it was very different then. In 2014, I knew it was time. I events. We have all been working together to make this event basically took the ‘if you build it, they will come’ approach. the best one yet. The community really all came together, Our clothing brand had the foundation of what we needed and the support has been incredible! There’s a big difference to create the event. I had been paying attention to when the from last year to this year in community involvement. All of waves were the most constant in Cocoa Beach, and I came our sponsors are important to us and we couldn’t do it withup with February and October. In October you can wear a out them!” bikini, so that was an easy choice for me! The first year we The Salty Sweet Women’s Pro/Am Surf Fest will be taking place had Hurricane Gonzalo, and it was overhead and glassy for October 15-16 at the beach by 1 Minutemen Causeway in Downtown the entire event. It was a magical day. It’s a day I feel like my Cocoa Beach. To learn more, go to SaltySweetSurfFest.com parents had something to do with. It was just too perfect.

Crystal Cooper OF SALTY SWEET

While the rest of the country is getting their pumpkins and apple cider, us residents are still sweating and living the summer dream. Yes, most of us have noticed a switch in the weather and we say that fall is here, but we’re far away from the cool brisk nights and smell of the crisp leaves falling from the trees. Since moving to Cocoa Beach, I always thought of October as a subdued month for the area, but I see that starting to change. Vacationers are still adoring our beaches and walking around the Port, and storm shutters on the condos are starting to open. Our little beach town is still alive and vibrant. This month’s Boardrider article highlights a special event in the community that will be keeping many of us in the sand or in the water: Salty Sweet Women’s Pro/Am Surf Fest. This festival is a girl’s only event, and will be taking place this year in Downtown Cocoa Beach. I got the pleasure to catch up with Crystal Cooper, the founder of Salty Sweet Clothing and the Surf Fest. Crystal has been lighting up our

PURPS and (A)Politics One of Cocoa Beach’s most notable artists, Bruce Reynolds, just lit a fire under the rump of the California art scene with his installation “Apolitical Process.” Bruce has been working on this project for the last eight or nine months. In fact, he may have had it completed three months earlier if I didn’t pop in every other day to check out his work-in-progress, ultimately and most likely bugging and distracting him. He told me he was working with a few people (PM Tenore and Kelly Slater) on getting it shown in a art gallery in Los Angeles, California. The pieces are all highly politically inspired and illustrate the complete madness that has become the 2016 presidential election. I never once planned on seeing the art outside of Bruce’s laboratory of mastery in the back of The Surfinista. I was honored to see him make progress on the pieces over time. I was even educated by Bruce as to some of the “whys” and “hows” of his vision.

PURPS Life

I joined the PURPS family about two months ago, and I have been stoked ever since. They make premium hydration and energy beverages from organic, non-GMO ingredients including six organic super-fruits grown in different parts of the world. We have been carrying it at the skate park for two years, and it is a perfect product for those of us on the go. Aren’t we all always on the go? Anyway, I was recently asked to go to Pismo Beach, California to promote PURPS at a surf contest sponsored by Billabong called Still Frothy. How could I refuse? My boss suggested we get there a day early so that we could all attend Bruce’s art show in Venice together (since PURPS was

the main sponsor). I was more than excited. I flew to the headquarters in Newport Beach, where I met with one of the three founders of PURPS, Dr. Chris Schaumburg. We caught up for a couple of hours, and I was quickly outfitted with a PURPS van and an arsenal of product for both events. I drove up to Venice Beach where Apolitical Process was having its opening night. Bruce and his wife Diane, the owners of Surfinista, were outside of the gallery when I pulled up. I almost instinctively asked for a Cardiff Bowl. They told me Brock Reynolds and Todd Super were there the night before. I was bummed to have missed them. Bruce and Dianne granted

me a sneak peak before the show. I was blown away when I saw the sculptures and paintings professionally displayed and curated by PURPS and RVCA founder PM Tenore.

Apolitical Process Debut

The pieces screamed multiple messages outlining the insanity that has taken over this current election. Bill and Hillary Clinton were presented in true “BREY” style, fashioned after Macbeth with a little Monica represented high above, trapped in a cage. Donald Trump was represented as a frightening king giving orders to build a wall. The U.S. flag colors were on one side, and the Mexican flag represented

NEXT CONTEST PRIVATE NKF SK8 JAM & LESSONS SURF N TURF

on the other. Found objects and mixed media adorned the sculptures with a haunting message of semi-dictatorship. I am not an art critic, and I will not pretend to interpret Bruce’s exact vision. His art is calculated, and the sculptures are so well thought out, one could stare at them for months uncovering different meanings. The Bernie Sanders “Free Ride” vehicle was a hit as well. Art enthusiasts raved all night about how he constructed a vehicle out of seemingly random objects which mirrored many aspects of Bernie’s campaign. The objects used are not at all put together without strategy. In fact, they are precisely positioned to help tell the story of Bruce’s vision as continued on pg 40

FISHING REPORT THE TIME IS NOW FOR THE REDFISH SPAWN By Capt. Jamie Glasner

This has to be by far one of the best redfish spawns I have ever seen. No bait, all on artificial lures. Some days are better than others but on the good days, don’t be surprised to haul in 30 to 40 redfish on top waters, gold spoons, swimbaits, and on the fly rod. The schools of redfish can be anywhere from 200 to a 1000 fish. Just seeing the school in a feeding frenzy is amazing. These redfish have been ranging from 40 to 50 inches and weighing up to 39 pounds. The best time to target them is when the wind is calm, which makes it easier to read the water and get on them. If you love to catch redfish, I highly recommend this as the time to book a trip with me. You will not regret it. Tarpon is also another species we’re targeting in the river. 50 to 100-pound tarpon on the channel drop-offs doesn’t get any better. Live pogies have been the bait of choice, but you can still get them to go for a live mullet or a topwater when the

bite is really good. If you by chance come across these tarpon, keep a sharp eye out for those spawning redfish. I’ve seen them together the past couple trips I’ve done. The trout bite, on the other hand, has been hit or miss. It definitely isn’t like it was last year. There are tons of little dink trout on the drop-offs, but that’s only fun for the first five minutes. Most of the big gator trout that I’ve seen have been up tight to the shoreline in some super skinny water. The offshore fishing has been ok when the water is clean. A few kingfish have been caught on the reef with a cobia popping up every now and then. On the shoals, the ladyfish, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel have been plentiful. Some snook have also been caught in the Port around the jetties, and along the beach. There have also been a few flounders caught here and there. Well, that’s all I have for ya so if you make it out, good luck!

HOROSCOPES By Marie Moore

LIBRA Watch your emotional self. With this energy, you are very hypersensitive. Unfortunately, you may experience sleepless nights and restless energy until the seventh of October. Then the energy gets better for you. At this time, your internal traffic is on yellow, so you have a lot of ideas up in the air right now.

SCORPIO I see second chances with the ex, but you can’t decide whether you’re over it or just confused about the relationship. Don’t be your own worst enemy! Stop looking at things through your emotional eyes and start looking at the bigger picture.

SAGITTARIUS People who you fought with last month are going to apologize this month. I feel that big changes are still happening, so try to bend. This is not a time for manipulation.

CAPRICORN Major decisions are coming up in regards to career changes, but this may more than likely be up in the air. Because Pluto is now direct, the energy is better, and you’ll be getting along very well with people in the workplace.

AQUARIUS I feel this is a time of emotional transformation, and it’s not an easy energy to go through. Your way of thinking and looking at certain issues are going to change, so try not to throw any tantrums this month.

PISCES Things are going to start turning around for you. Pay attention to the signs that you are moving in the right direction and keep chipping away at your goals. I see good news happening in regards to career this month.

ARIES With this energy, you’re going to have some luck with love. Also, this is a great

energy time for those of you dealing with the media. Your money situation is going to get much better because career changes and opportunities to make extra cash are coming up.

TAURUS Keep it positive this month! You are great at problem-solving and finding solutions. Be careful when dealing with others or gossiping because people may turn on you. Try to compromise and learn to let things go. Don’t stay in a situation because you need to be right.

GEMINI I feel that you’re going to like the month of October. I see second chances with love relationships are coming, and recognition for your work and popularity are increasing.

CANCER This is a better energy time for you. I feel that love is in the air for some, and for others, the focus is on career. Fate is taking you by the hand and giving you a direction that you should go. Be more in a place of optimism when it comes to new opportunities presenting themselves to you.

LEO Watch your emotions with this energy. You are trying to work on yourself at this time, especially your self-control. Thankfully, with Mercury going direct, your financial situation will get better.

VIRGO Your money situation is getting better, but you are still going through some major changes. Although more people are finally able to see things your way, you are still dealing with ups and downs.

There was a piece for just about everyone who ran for president this year, and all were amazing. One of the biggest hits of the night also were the “assault weapon” sculptures. Items like bolt cutters, old movie cameras, croquet mallets, protractors and a multitude of other items were fashioned together and mounted in the form of automatic rifles. All of the pieces by Bruce were incredible and so well received by the California art community.

Kevin Ancell. Kevin had joined forces with PURPS founder, Kelly Slater, on an art concept to raise awareness about the torturous conditions SeaWorld employs to house Orca whales for the benefit of entertaining humans. Kelly knows more people on Earth than most of us, and he decided to pay tribute to some of his friends who passed away. He included their names written hundreds or thousands of times by Ancell to create “orca-like” shading on a quiver of Kelly’s surfboards. So, from a distance, the boards look like orcas, and when you look close, the darkened sections were filled with a name of a friend who passed away. This piece hit close to home, as they made ones to honor Amy Gellert and Rich Salick. Both were Cocoa Beach locals who passed away, and close friends of Kelly’s. And mine. And yours. This was deep, and reminded me that we are all family, and there is no guarantee of a tomorrow. I was in tears as I read “Amy Gellert” over and over again. Amy was Mark and Ryan Gellert’s sister and both (all three) were/are my best friends. Amy’s parents, Bunny and Bob, still live in town. They were practically aunt and uncle to me and so many other kids growing up in the 80s. And what can I say about Rich Salick? He was the epitome of positivity, surviving multiple kidney transplants and dedicating his life to helping others before passing away in 2012. Rich’s son, Phillip, lives in Los Angeles now and was present at the show. It felt good to see him and look at the “Salick” name together written by Kevin Ancell.

Todd Glaser’s photography, printed on aluminum, depicted Kelly with the orca boards as well as other classic, never-before-seen Kelly images. Emotions went from up to down to all around. We had tears and smiles all night but mostly smiles. My daughter, Chelsea, flew down that same evening from Oregon to join me at the art show, which

quickly became an impromptu Cocoa Beach reunion. Shelby Norwich, Phillip Salick, David Dreyer (Legend of the Seagullmen), Lauren Ceil, Mike Duffield, and Kelly, all friends of mine for over 35 years, were in attendance. We reminisced and enjoyed the night together with Bruce and Diane and their friends Dan and Brittany. CB in the house! What an honor! My daughter got to meet some of my oldest friends, and we all had fun watching Kelly sing tunes with his buddy’s band. (Kellyoke?) “One Love,” “Stir It Up,” and “867-5309” were just a few of Slater’s songs (remakes?). Kelly can sing! But he surfs slightly better. Chelsea and I said our goodbyes, hopped in the PURPS van and made our way north three hours to Pismo Beach for the surf contest.

Family Ties

Coincidentally, my daughter had family ties to Pismo Beach as her uncle and aunt lived there at one time. Her uncle, who passed away on 9/11 (not in NYC), is memorialized with a plaque on a bench at the Pismo Pier. At the end of the long event weekend, I gave Walter, the contest organizer, a high-five. Then Chelsea and I sat on her Uncle Matt’s bench. We watched the sunset together before heading to dinner. What an amazing way to end a fast-paced weekend in California before heading our separate ways. Thanks to the staff of the Still Frothy event for being such awesome hosts! Bruce’s art will be on display through October in Venice Beach. If you get the chance to see it, I promise you won’t be let down. Just like the Cardiff Bowl back at Surfinista never lets me down. Oh, and Brock, if you got to surf the wave pool before any of us, as I predicted, I am mad at you (jealous, I mean). And I want to interview you next month on this page. I hope you got pictures, you lucky dog. #ApoliticalProcess
