I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing this month’s Resident of the Month, Mark Longenecker of Endless Summer Tattoo; highlighting his latest piece for the grand opening of our Publix Cornerstone Plaza. Though he was approached by Publix management for the project, he was more than willing to put brush to paint and donate a piece to the new store. Also featured this month in our Local Amp is the multi-talented and ever-so-cool-to-hang-with Shenell Baker. She’s got her finger on the pulse of the music industry, working with big music acts across the board. Shenell is a musicmogul in her own right; recording, collaborating and supporting the layered textures of musicians coming to Florida’s Space Coast. Originally born in the Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean, she relocated with her parents when she was young to Brevard County. Sharon grew up in our community, often leaving on adventures, however always returning as she loves her family and she values the deep roots of her many friendships. To mention a few, Sharon is an ARMY veteran, a Bikram yoga teacher, a massage therapist, and a college graduate. Be sure to throw her a high-five when you see her, she likes that sort of thing.

ne doesn’t have to travel far to catch an eyeful of beautiful murals and creative craftsmanship throughout Cocoa Beach’s businesses and building-sides. From colorful impressions of underwater scenes to uniquely painted pottery, it’s clear the community supports art out and around the downtown landscape. With so many talented hands to choose from, we were pleased to hear one of our local artisans was chosen to create a piece for the re-opening

I wanted to dedicate it to downtown Cocoa Beach, because that’s what I’m all about; where my business has been and where I live… My heart is definitely in downtown Cocoa Beach because everything is accessible by walking. The Kelly Slater statue is the first thing is you see when driving in, and the main draw is Coconuts and Beach Shack on Minuteman Causeway. My love for Publix and my love for Cocoa Beach all went in that board.
of our beloved Publix Cornerstone Plaza marketplace. Newly erected and brimming with a buzz only a much-anticipated business can generate, the new (and improved) Publix brings a promise of fresh, bountiful produce, marketplace supplies, convenience, trusted quality and a deep dedication to customer service and community involvement. Publix further endeared itself to our township when they sought out a local artist for a centerpiece in their store’s decor. When approached by the Publix representative, Mark Longenecker, owner of Endless Summer Tattoo, was asked to create something with a Cocoa Beach theme, which he considered an honor to create and donate. About the new Publix, Longenecker stated, “Cocoa Beach has been without for such a long time / It’s very exciting for all of us and has made our lives so much better and easier / I was honored to put my art in there / I share the excitement with all of Cocoa Beach for its arrival.”
Much like his artwork, Longnecker personifies a classic beach vibe; colorful clothing and an easy nature epitomizes the casual, “I live the way people vacation,” seaside-life persona. Such nostalgia can easily be found in his artwork as well. When asked how one could describe his artwork, he suggested his coined phrase “Tropi-Style,” which is “basically tropical style, where the focus is on the beach, tropical imagery, lots of color and anything that reminds you of vacation: blue water and palm trees.” All of which, he mentioned, are very appealing to divers, ocean lovers and beach lovers. Many moons past, Mark left the town of his youth, Fort Lauderdale, in search of a community to lay down roots and build a thriving tattoo business. He knew he wanted a location near the beach, with a tropical landscape. Once he landed in Cocoa Beach, he knew he’d found just the spot; with a dynamic beach break and an easy lifestyle, Florida’s premier beach was the perfect location to hone his craft. From there, the small boy who began his love for art painting his family dog grew to become a celebrated tattoo artist, recognized both locally and throughout the world of tattooing for his iconic, tropical style. His successes reached international levels when he competed as a semifinalist in the TV show series “Ink Master – Rivals.” We can only assume every surface he touches is left with a splash of color and an easy tropical vibe infusion ideal for our beach town setting.
A man of many pursuits, Longenecker is known not only for his lively art, but also for being a huge proponent for reggae music and charity work. Though the list of the charity organizations he supports is long and distinguished, it is his work with Surfers for Autism that inspires him the most. Of the organization he says, “Surfers for Autism is the biggest charity I support, have the most love for, and put the most heart into, because I’ve seen it work. I’ve worked with a lot of charities that I believe in, most of which only require a check. However, I enjoy contributing to Surfers for Autism mostly because I’ve seen the improvement in the kids, with my own eyes. A kid will show up at the beach making no eye contact, but leave the beach making eye contact, hugging and smiling… I see it making an impact in a child’s life. The ocean is a healing place, and I know that Surfers for Autism is a formula that works.” He further adds he’s been working with them since he first arrived in Cocoa Beach, fifteen years ago. Another great form of charity work Longnecker is involved in is supported through his deep love of reggae music. Dub Massive is an annual charity event benefitting Surfers for Autism that celebrates reggae music through DJs. “When you go to a traditional festival, it’s all about the bands and DJs are considered background music, playing in between sets. With Dub Massive, the DJs are the superstars and the focus is on them and their performances. It’s all about dancing and listening to new and old music,” Longenecker
says. Traditionally, the venue has been Cocoa Beach’s Sandbar Sports Grill; however, Mark says he’s open to new ideas of going bigger and locating a larger venue in the hopes of supporting the growing interest and success of the event and the charity it supports. When we asked Longenecker what was next on his list of goals to accomplish this year, the man decorated head to toe with imaginative tattoos and a rich personality looked back with a genuine smile and said, “I’m going to yoga teacher training!” Well then, Longenecker, we will see you on the mat. But in the meantime, don’t stop what you’re doing! Cocoa Beach thanks you.

It’s a call your crew, grab your bikes and head out the door for some good vibes kind of day, which is just about how it went down for Shenell Baker on this day in particular. She and her “Lowlife Bikes” crew (a unique-as-hell, custom-made, low-rider bike shop) made a plan to rally and ride, and we got the invite. Immediately upon arrival, we were greeted with hearty handshakes, hugs and an overwhelming sense of family and camaraderie. Legit, so much fun! After some low-rider cruising, bike-swapping shenanigans, we parked under a shade tree and had a chance to get to know the multi-faceted Shenell Baker a bit it better. Born on the north side of the Big Island, Kohala, Hawaii (“where everyone knows everybody”), a young Shenell grafted her love for music over the ravages of addiction and wayward youth, and set herself on a trajectory of healing and marked success through music. She says of her earlier start:

“Music saved my life. I was a complete drug addict. If it wasn’t for my son and my music I’d probably be doing the same thing, or I’d be dead. Music is what’ll save you... and it brings everyone together. Black, white, purple, yellow, green... we all vibe.”
Shenell’s first introduction to the music industry started with a “little band” called the Rolling Stones. Not a bad way to cut your teeth, in my opinion! While working at the Hilton as a runner, she was approached and asked of her interest in working behind the music scenes. Without a pause, she jumped on the offer. From there, her career in music production flourished. When asked to namedrop a couple of her favorite artists she’s worked for, she started counting them off with bands like Collie Buddz (who she considers “family”), Ian Young and Black Uhuru; her most favorite being Wyclef. She says of Wyclef, “That was my pinnacle!” After 18 years in the business, Shenell’s creative wheelhouse is a multi-faceted
affair: musician, lyricist, DJ, producer and an elemental backbone component of Dueterman Productions. There’s nothing she’s not into, music-wise, and there’s not an instrument she can’t play, “... except for a saxophone, or wind instruments in general,” she says with a big Shenell Baker laugh. That’s not her gig, and that’s cool too. She says of her many projects,

“I’m an artist! I do everything, so I can never label myself as one thing. I like getting my hands on everything!” These days you can find her in the recording studio laying new sound and writing music for many of the artists you hear on radio today. An overtone to the interview, which could hardly go unnoticed, was her sense of “crew” and her responsibility to pass on the blessings that helped improve her life. Now, with many years in the business and a crew that works by her side, she feels an immense responsibility to empower the people around her to strive for greatness. “I don’t care if they climb higher than me. I’m proud. I want them to do better than me. If the opportunities come for you, don’t let them pass you by. Go for it! ...As far as my boss goes, Robert Dueterman, he works side by side with us. And that’s what it’s all about. He’ll pick up trash with us. We respect him. He works hard and we’re good.” *throws up a shaka* She says the production crews and the people who work behind the scenes are the hardest working people in the industry: “The people who promote the shows aren’t the one who make them happen, it’s the people behind the scenes: hospitality, door crew, runners, stagehands, audio crew, light crew, barricade builders, garbage pickers, porta-potty cleaners, bar-
tenders, etc... These are the people who work their [butts] off. Nobody ever thanks them, but they’re the ones who make the concerts and festivals happen.” There’s no question she believes in the words she speaks. There’s a heartfelt sincerity to her message.
express deep conviction for her lifestyle. She’s casual and cool; even her voice has a melody to it. As I reviewed the audio recorded from our meeting, I found myself chuckling along with her. As an artist, she’s core. Her roots are music and family. As a person, she’s just plain rad.

When we asked what it was about the Lowlife Bike crew she enjoyed most, she spoke of the hard work on the road. She echoed what many of us have lamented. She doesn’t want to hang out in smoky bars and spend her hard-earned money on booze and bad decisions. Shenell says on the matter, “I want to be outside with good vibes and good people. So we ride our bikes ...” Her laughter is hearty, comes deep from her belly and it’s peppered between each of her thoughts. There wasn’t a moment in her interview she didn’t

Eat BeachSide
T
here’s no shortage of great restaurants this side of Brevard County’s coastline, and with so many to choose from, we had to dine at every great spot to dial in this month’s Restaurant of the Month. Not only are we in need of a new diet plan, but also more nights in the week to eat all this great food! What makes this month’s choice so delectable is the amount of choices hungry diners have to choose from. When we were given the chance to chat with Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier’s General Manager, Mr. Rick Lohr, we were delighted to hear of the fantastic menu choices visitors have to choose from. However, a little history may illuminate why this hot spot is so special. For those of us who’ve been around for a spell, the Pier has always been an iconic landmark for Cocoa Beach’s coastline. Whether your visit was for some sun and fun or a cool beverage on the boardwalk, I’m almost positive most, if not all, of us have had a

great day at the beach there. Built in 1962, the 800 feet of boardwalk, shops, bars and restaurants have nourished and sheltered many visitors for decades. Over the years, time and wicked storms have ravaged the expansive structure, leaving it somewhat dilapidated. In 2014, Westgate Resorts purchased the pier and launched a multimillion-dollar renovation to restore its historic glory. This writer, in particular, can recall the rumble and grumble of fellow neighbors none-to-happy about a large corporation taking over their beloved landmark. It was alarming to conceive an “outsider” might come in and wreck what beach-goers have long come to expect from the location. But Byron Evetts of Cocoa Beach says of the upgrades made, “I’m excited for the changes. We’re a quaint little drinking village with a surfing problem, trying to dig [our]selves out of the stone age.” When questioned about the crowds and excitement the Co-
coa Beach Pier draws, Byron says, “Don’t be upset if you live by the Pier and people are out having fun.” That’s what it’s designed to do, right? Contrary to what locals may have surmised to be a venture of epic disappointment, the people of Westgate rolled in, wrecked shop (in a most constructive way) and rebuilt the Pier to withstand the burden of heavy storms and crowds. They’ve presented us with a beautiful landmark, complete with all the attractions and services a beach-goer could ask for.
For instance, did you know the Pier services food and drink directly on the beach? Beachgoers can make the most of their visit by spending all their time where they want to be the most—on the beach. The Pier’s unique equipment rental program and direct-tobeach food service afford guests little reason to leave the sand. Starting at 11a.m. daily, waitstaff roam the beach, taking orders and serving directly to guests. Food and drink are available from any of the Pier’s restaurants and bars, including items such as the locally-sourced jumbo shrimp, popular
lobster roll and signature Pieradise cocktail. Such a bonus! You don’t have to leave the comfort of your beach squat unless you wish to utilize the facilities; of which I’d like to highlight as well. They updated the bathrooms … thank you, Westgate, for the clean bathrooms! The Pier’s various eateries offer menus full of enticing options for the selective diner. The Boardwalk Bar and Restaurant, an outdoor venue located along the Pier’s boardwalk, features new menu items such as fresh lobster rolls and fish tacos, refreshing beverages and oversized misting fans that complement the ocean’s natural breeze against a backdrop of breathtaking beachside views. Guests can enjoy Florida sunshine, live entertainment and fresh oysters at the Pier’s open-air seafood bar, Keith’s Oyster Bar, named for Pier owner David Siegel’s late nephew, Keith Siegel. Adjacent to the oyster bar, a 10-foot, 6,000-pound anchor discovered by Keith Siegel at the wreckage of an 18th century whaling ship also stands as a memorial of the renowned local lobsterman. Additional food and beverage options include Sea Dogs, a quick-service option located at the Pier’s entrance offering softserve ice cream, turkey legs and Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, and Pelican’s Bar & Grill, where this writer had a most delicious meal of Clams Rockefeller and Sidewinder French Fries dusted in a salt and vinegar rub with a side of tangy remoulade sauce … OUTSTANDING! Seriously, folks, the dishes are beautiful, bountiful and nicely priced. I had zero complaints. There’s also a sports bar with floor-to-ceiling views of the ocean and a wide selection of hand-crafted beers. The Rikki Tiki Bar, an ideal place for happy hour, located at
the end of the Pier overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, was where I finished off my visit with a festive mojito and rubbed elbows with other visitors. The Rikki Tiki Tavern menu features items including jumbo coconut shrimp served with a spicy mango habanero sauce, a fresh seasonal fish sandwich and the Tiki Dog, a Nathan’s Famous hot dog wrapped and fried in an egg roll and served with spicy Asian mustard sauce and sweet and sour sauce. The view is incredible and a nice bragging point if you have visitors in town and you want to show off the beauty of our gorgeous ocean-scape. Friends, it has to be mentioned, a bonus to all these great spots is not having to worry about falling through the flooring of this great structure. Westgate’s Cocoa Beach Pier restaurants feature top quality food and beverage service and locally sourced products from seafood suppliers whose crews can be seen in action near the Pier in season. The culinary team is led by award-winning Chef John Flaherty, whose menus include burgers, a variety of seafood and even fried gator. Dessert offerings include the Florida classic key lime pie from the local favorite, The Florida Key Lime Pie Company.

ears have gone by, times have changed, and so have I, but here are some favorite side dishes. They don’t take a lot of time to prepare, so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time at the table with family and friends.
COCONUT AND ALMOND SWEET POTATOES 3 lbs. sweet potatoes , sliced 1 inch thick 6 tbsp. coconut manna, melted 6 tbsp. toasted hemp seeds 1/4 cup shredded coconut 1/3 cup sliced, toasted almonds Salt and pepper Fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish
Steam the potatoes until soft, about 25 minutes. Drain with a slotted spoon and place on serving platter. Drizzle with the coconut manna, sprinkle the hemp seeds, shredded coconut, toasted almonds, and a good pinch of salt and pepper and top with rosemary sprigs for garnish.
HEMP SEED TABBOULEH SALAD
2 cups diced cucumber 1 cup diced tomatoes
1 cup chopped red pepper
1 large bunch parsley, chopped 1/2 cup red onion, chopped 1/2 cup hemp seeds 1/4 cup lemon juice
3 cloves garlic, minced 6 tbsp. olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
CUCUMBERS IN VINEGAR
7 cups sliced cucumbers 2 cups coconut sugar
1 cup apple cider vinegar Dill and celery seed Salt and pepper Mix together sugar and vinegar until the sugar dissolves. Add the celery seed, dill, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well with cucumbers and set aside for a few hours or overnight before serving. Keeps well for 3-4 days.
Blend the lemon, garlic oil, and salt and pepper in the bottom of a large bowl with a whisk, then add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. (Add more salt and pepper if needed.)
